Abstract:This study compared the cure and pulp-cell cytotoxicity of composites polymerized with light-emitting diode (LED) and halogen-based light curing units. A mini-filled resin composite (Tetric Ceram, Vivadent), two LED (E-light [EL], GC and Freelight [FL], 3M-ESPE), a conventional halogen (Max [MX], Dentsply) and a high-intensity halogen light (Astralis 10 [AS], Vivadent) were evaluated. Cure associated with the different lights was determined by measuring the top and bottom surface hardness (KHN; n = 5) of 2-mm thick specimens using a digital microhardness tester (load = 500 gf; dwell time = 15 seconds). Pulp-cell cytotoxicity was assessed using a direct contact method involving incisor tooth slices dissected from 28-day old Wistar rats maintained in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) and 1% agarose. The bottom surfaces of the cured composite specimens (7-mm diameter and 2-mm deep) were placed in contact with the openings of each tooth slice. After incubation in 5% CO2 atmosphere at 37 degrees C for 48 hours, the tooth slices were fixed, demineralized and processed for histological examination. Pulp fibroblasts and odontoblasts were counted histomorphometrically at 400x magnification within a 1500 microm2 area using a computerized micro-imaging system. Eighteen readings were obtained for each curing light. Data was subjected to ANOVA/Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation at significance level 0.05 and 0.01, respectively. At the top surfaces, the cure with AS was significantly greater than the other curing lights, with MX and FL being significantly greater than EL. At the bottom surfaces, MX, AS and FL had significantly better cure than EL. Specimens cured with MX were less cytotoxic than those polymerized with other curing lights. Specimens cured with AS and EL were significantly less cytotoxic than FL. Composite cure and cytotoxicity associated with LED lights is device dependent. Composite cure was not correlated to pulp-cell cytotoxicity. The response of pulpal fibroblasts to unreacted/leached components of composites differs somewhat from odontoblasts.
Assessment of Degree of Conversion and Volumetric Shrinkage of Novel Self-Adhesive Cement

Abstract:The degree of monomer conversion and polymerization shrinkage are two of the main reasons for potential adhesion failure between the tooth structure and the restoration substrate. To evaluate the degree of conversion and polymerization shrinkage of a newly developed self-adhesive resin cement, the degree of conversion (DC) was measured using FTIR under different activation modes, temperatures, and times. Volumetric shrinkage was tested using the AcuVol video imaging method. The experimental cement showed a higher DC than other cements under self-curing. The DC of the experimental cement was higher than that of other cements, except SpeedCem Plus under light curing. The experimental cement had a higher DC than other cements, except SpeedCem Plus in some conditions under dual curing. All self-adhesive cements had a higher DC at 37 °C than at 23 °C under self-curing, and there was no statistical difference between 23 °C and 37 °C under light curing. All self-adhesive cements showed a significantly higher DC at 10 min than at 5 min under self-curing. There was no statistical difference between 5 min and 10 min for most cements under dual curing. All self-adhesive cements statistically had the same volumetric shrinkage under light curing and self-curing. The newly developed self-adhesive resin cement exhibited a higher degree of conversion and similar volumetric shrinkage compared to these commercial self-adhesive resin cements.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To assess the degree of conversion (DC) of dual-curing composite cements when cured through ceramic-veneered zirconia disks.METHODS: Portions of mixed cement, either G-CEM LinkForce (GC), Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake) or ResiCEM (Shofu), were placed on the ATR crystal of a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope (FTIR; iS50, Thermo Scientific) and squeezed to a 100-µm film thickness using a microscopy cover glass. DC (%) of the composite cements applied in self-curing mode was measured in the dark at 37°C. Following the dual-curing mode, the cements were light-cured directly (positive control) or through a ceramic-veneered zirconia disk (0.5-mm thick zirconia with a 1.0-mm thick veneering ceramic) for 40 sec using two light-curing units (G-Light Prima 2, GC; PenCure, Morita). Per experimental group, 5 tests were conducted to measure DC in self-cure and dual-cure mode (n=5). FTIR spectra of the composite cement films were acquired to determine DC every min up to 30 min. DC of the composite cements was statistically compared using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA (α=0.05).RESULTS: For all cements investigated, the self-curing mode resulted in significantly lower DC at 10, 20 and 30 min than the light-curing mode. When the composite cements were light-cured through the zirconia disk, DC at 30 min dropped significantly for ResiCem (Shofu), while not for Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake) and G-CEM LinkForce (GC).CONCLUSIONS: Self-curing slows down polymerization but does not reach for all composite cements the highest (light-cured) DC. Ceramic-veneered zirconia-based restorations may affect DC of some composite cements.

Abstract:Statement of the problem: The success of a ceramic restoration depends primarily on the durability of the bond between ceramic and luting agent, and respectively between luting agent and enamel and dentin. When using composite resin as a luting material, the bond strength will be determined by achieving adequate resin polymerization which is affected by ceramic shade and thickness that interferes with light transmittance resulting in a decrease in the total energy reaching the luting cement.Objective: This research was designed to evaluate the degree of monomer conversion of light cured resin cement under two ceramic materials (Lithium Disilicate, ultra translucent zirconia) using Different thicknesses (0.4 mm, 0.7mm, 1.0 mm). The degree of conversion is measured by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy).Materials and methods: light cure resin cement (rely X veneer, 3M) was used as manufacturer’s instructions with film thickness of 0.1mm, and cured for 20 seconds using Bluephase (Ivoclar Vivadent) 1200 mW/cm2 curing done through 14×14 specimens of two types of materials (ulta-translucent zirconia katana UT, lithium disilicate e-max) with two shades (A1, A3) and different thicknesses (0.4 mm ,0.7mm, 1 mm). Then the degree of conversion of each sample evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, (Nicolet 6700)Results: One-Way ANOVA revealed no significant difference between different thicknesses of the ceramic material on the degree of conversion of resin cement (P>0.05). While there was a significant difference between different shades of the ceramics on its degree of conversion (P≤0.05). ceramics with the shade A3 showed lower degree of conversion than ceramics with the shade A1, and there was a significant differences between the two types of ceramic materials on the degree of conversion of resin cement with the lithium disilicate material showing a higher degree of conversion than the ultra-translucent zirconia (P≤0.05).Conclusion: Thicknesses up to 1.0 mm has no significant effect on the polymerization of resin cements, Lighter shades transmit more light to the underlying cement than darker ones, Lithium disilicate has higher translucency and allow more conversion of monomer to polymer in the underlying cement.

Abstract:Pseudosmylidia relicta gen. et sp. nov. (Neuroptera: Osmylidae) is described from the late Eocene of Florissant (U.S.A., Colorado). It is assigned to the subfamily Protosmylinae based on the presence of two venational features characteristic of the subfamily: most crossveins in the radial to intramedial spaces of the forewing are arranged in four gradate series, and CuP is short and simple or forked only once in the hind wing. This genus is remarkable by CuP in the forewing bearing few pectinate branches. This is the only genus of extant and Cenozoic fossil Osmylidae in which this plesiomorphic condition is retained.
Time-dependent Microhardness Gradients of Self-adhesive Resin Cements under Dual- and Self-curing Modes.

Abstract:CLINICAL RELEVANCEAcid-functional monomers in self-adhesive resin cements may decrease their self-curing polymerization ability. Light irradiation optimizes polymerization performance.SUMMARYPurpose: The aim of this study was to investigate Knoop microhardness of self-adhesive resin cements under dual- and self-curing modes in simulated canals for describing the polymerization behavior.Methods and Materials: Slots in lightproof silicone cylinders with one open end were filled with the following eight materials: a traditional resin cement (Duolink), a core build-up resin material (MultiCore Flow), and six self-adhesive resin cements (RelyX Unicem 2, G-Cem Automix, Maxcem, Biscem, Multilink Speed, and PermaCem 2.0). The resins were exposed to light through the open end and then stored in a lightproof box. The Knoop hardness gradient for each resin was measured after 1 hour and 120 hours. Surface readings were obtained at 1-mm intervals from 1 mm to 10 mm away from the open ends. The data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls test (α=0.05).Results: All the resin materials had stable Knoop hardness numbers (KHNs) at a certain depth; their KHNs in the self-curing mode did not change (p>0.05). The region above this certain depth was regarded as having undergone the dual-curing mode, and the KHN decreased gradually with depth (p<0.05). Between 1 and 120 hours postexposure, the ratio of the KHN at a 5-mm depth (self-cured) to that at a 1-mm depth (dual-cured) increased in Duolink and MultiCore Flow. However, the ratios of the six adhesive resin cements varied.Conclusion: Without light, most self-adhesive resin cements differed from traditional dual-cured resin materials in terms of Knoop micro-hardness, and they had a lesser capacity for chemical-induced curing.
Individual and Group Contingencies in Cooperative Learning at the Collegiate Level.

Abstract:Six sections of an undergraduate human development course (N = 317) taught across two semesters were exposed to one of three cooperative learning arrangements awarding bonus credit for individual and/or group improvement in exam performance: (1) individual improvement first required to earn group bonus credit, (2) group improvement first required to earn individual bonus credit, and (3) individual and group bonus credit earned separately. Based on exam scores in a previous unit of the course, students were categorized as high, average, and low performers. The high performers fared least well when individual improvement was primary in the cooperative contingency but had a much higher success rate under the other two contingencies. Low performers generally had the highest rate of success of all performance groups under all contingencies. Keywords: cooperative learning, group contingencies, individual contingencies, college students. ********** Cooperative learning has been widely used for enhancing academic performance and social outcomes (Slavin, 1989-90). Although much research has focused on cooperative learning at the elementary and high-school levels, cooperative learning may also be a viable strategy for promoting achievement among college students. Johnson, Johnson, and Smith's (1998) meta-analysis of cooperative, competitive, and individualistic learning approaches among college students and adults found that cooperative approaches promoted more individual achievement than competitive (effect size = 0.49) or individualistic approaches (effect size = 0.53). A primary factor to consider when using cooperative learning procedures is the role of credit or reward contingencies. Specifically, do cooperative learning procedures affect student performance differently when differential weights are given to individual and group performance? Group performance contingencies commonly used in classroom settings can generally be classified as independent, interdependent, and dependent (Litow & Pumroy, 1975). Independent group-oriented contingencies are perhaps most commonly used in working with relative large groups. Criteria and consequences are the same for all students, but each individual student receives access to the consequence based on his or her own behavior. Grades are typically used as consequences in independent group-oriented contingencies. An interdependent group-oriented contingency allows every member of a group to receive the same consequence based on some aspect of the group's performance. Providing students with a reward based on a collective increase in a test score is an example of an interdependent contingency. In a dependent group-oriented contingency, access to a group consequence is based on the behavior of an individual student or sub-group of students within a group. For example, a dependent group-oriented contingency would consist of offering a reward to the entire class if two specific students arrived on time to class. In order to be maximally effective, Slavin (1991) emphasized that cooperative learning procedures must incorporate both individual accountability and group rewards. Similarly, Johnson, Johnson, and Smith (2007) included positive interdependence and individual accountability in their basic elements of cooperation. Positive interdependence consists of group members working together to learn from one another and share in joint success. Individual accountability is crucial because it ensures that each student is held accountable for his or her individual performance. Therefore, cooperative learning procedures often incorporate both interdependent and independent group-oriented contingencies. Applying an independent group-oriented contingency to students in a cooperative learning experience ensures that each student has access to rewards based on his or her own performance (individual accountability). Applying an interdependent group-oriented contingency ensures that students have a stake in other students' performing well, which increases the likelihood of everyone's benefiting from group success. …

Abstract:Although self-adhesive resin cements are convenient and less technique-sensitive materials for dental clinicians, they exhibit a lower degree of conversion due to acidic components in their composition. Supplementation of the initiator, accelerator, and activator in self-adhesive resin cements has been suggested to compensate for the lower degree of conversion. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different combinations of self-curing initiators, self-curing activators, and accelerators on the degree of conversion (DC) of self-adhesive resin cements. A dual-cured self-adhesive resin was prepared using six combinations of initiators, activators, and accelerators. The change in the DC over time was evaluated with and without light curing. The film thickness, flow properties, and cytotoxicity of each formulation were assessed. The results showed that all supplemental components had an effect on increasing the DC, but a greater increase in the DC was observed in the following order: activator, accelerator, and initiator. The cytotoxicity of the resin cements was related to the DC values, as resin cements with lower DC values exhibited higher cytotoxicity. The film thickness met the ISO standards for all groups. The results suggest that utilizing an activator is the most effective approach to enhance the DC in self-adhesive resin cement and that cytotoxicity tended to increase with lower DC values, whereas film thickness and flow properties demonstrated no correlation with DC values.

Degree of conversion and contraction stress development of a resin composite irradiated using halogen and LED at two C-factor levels

Abstract:This study verified the influence of curing methods and light sources on contraction stress, stress rate and degree of conversion (DC) of a restorative composite at two C-factor (CF) levels. For the stress test, composite (0.84 mm thick) was applied between two glass rods 5-mm in diameter mounted in a servohydraulic testing machine. Stress rates were calculated as the change in stress vs time at each second. DC was measured by micro-FTIR. Five curing methods were tested at two C-factor levels (1.5 and 3.0): High Intensity LED (LED HI), Continuous Light (QTH CL), Medium Intensity LED (LED MI), Low Intensity LED (LED LI) and Pulse Delay (QTH PD). The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). For the stress test at CF 1.5, QTH PD presented lower values than LED HI, QTH CL and LED LI. At CF 3.0, no difference was observed among the curing methods. For all curing methods, stress values at CF 3.0 were statistically higher than those at CF 1.5. LED HI presented the highest maximum stress rate, followed by QTH CL, LED MI, LED LI and QTH PD for both C-factors. In the DC test, no difference was observed among the methods and between the C-factor levels.

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of the transmittance of different composition, opacities and shades of ceramics on the degree of conversion of two dual-cured resin cements. Methodology Sixty discs were prepared from low translucency (LT) and medium opacity (MO) lithium disilicate ceramic, and zirconia ceramic (Z). Each group was subdivided into 5 subgroups (n=4) in shades A2, A3.5, B2, C2 and D3. The transmittance measurement was performed in a spectrophotometer. The Variolink II and Rely X U200 resin cements were photoactivated by LED (1400 mW/cm2) for 40 s through the ceramic discs and without the discs (control group). The DC was measured with infrared FTIR spectroscopy, immediately after light activation. Data were analyzed with Kruskall-Wallis and one-way ANOVA, following post-hoc comparisons by Tukey test and Pearson's correlation test (P<0.05). Results LT ceramic exhibited higher transmittance values compared to MO and Z ceramics. LTA2 and LTB2 showed statistically higher transmittance values compared to MOA2, MOA3.5 and ZA3.5. For Variolink II, the ceramic interposition did not influence the DC, since there were no statistical differences between groups with ceramic interposition and the control group. For Rely X U200 cement, the interposition of some ceramics types/shades (LTA3.5, MOA2, MOA3.5 and ZA3.5) significantly decreased the DC values compared to control group. A positive correlation was found between the ceramic transmittance and DC values of both tested cements. Conclusions. The transmittance and DC values of the cements were influenced by composition and shades of the ceramics. The higher the transmittance of ceramics, the higher the DC values for both cements.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of optical properties of lithium disilicate glass ceramics and the light-curing protocols (LCP) on the curing performance of light-cured resin cement. Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics with different optical properties were sectioned to produce ceramic specimens of 0.8 mm thickness. Irradiance through the ceramic specimens was measured by a radiometer. Light transmittance of ceramics was assessed using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. The light-cured resin cement was injected into a Teflon mold and ceramics with different optical properties were placed on it, cured under different LCPs, and the degree of conversion (DC) and Vickers microhardness of the resin cement were separately measured by Micro-ATR/FTIR spectrometry and the microhardness tester. The shade (p < 0.001) and transparency (p < 0.001) of ceramics affect the irradiance of the light-curing unit. The transparency (p < 0.001) of the ceramic and light-curing protocols (p < 0.001) affect the DC and microhardness of resin cements. When the thickness of the ceramic is 0.8 mm, the light transmittance of the ceramic and the curing performance of the resin cement increase with the increase of the transparency of the ceramic. An appropriate increase in irradiance and exposure time can optimize the curing performance of resin cement. These factors should be taken into account by the clinician when designing the bonding solution for porcelain veneers.

Influence of Curing Units and Indirect Restorative Materials on the Hardness of Two Dual-curing Resin Cements Evaluated by the Nanoindentation Test

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the hardness of a dual-curing self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200) and a conventional dual-curing resin cement (RelyX ARC) cured with different light curing units of different wavelengths (Elipar Freelight 2 LED [430 to 480 nm, conventional], Bluephase LED [380 to 515 nm, polywave], AccuCure 3000 Laser [488 nm]) by means of the nanoindentation test. Materials and methods: Bovine incisors were cleaned and then sectioned at the cementoenamel junction to remove the crown. After embedding in acrylic, dentin surfaces of the specimens were exposed and ground flat to standardize the surfaces. To simulate clinically placing indirect restorations, ceramic (IPS e.maxPress/Ivoclar Vivadent) or indirect composite resin (SR Adoro/Ivoclar Vivadent) slabs were cemented on dentin surfaces. The specimens were sectioned longitudinally at low speed under constant irrigation and then polished. In the positive control group, the cement was light cured without the interposition of indirect restorative material; in the negative control group, after the indirect restorative material was cemented, no light curing was performed, allowing only chemical polymerization of the cement. All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days. Nanoindentadion hardness of the cement layer was measured under a 100-mN load. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: Although the self-adhesive cement is technically simple, conventional cement showed the best polymerization performance. The polywave LED technology did not differ significantly from other light-curing units. The hardness of the resin cements evaluated was negatively influenced by the interposition of an indirect restorative material; only the LEDs were able to maintain the same degree of cement polymerization when an indirect restorative material was used. Conclusion: The photoactivation step is required during the cementation of indirect restorations to ensure adequate polymerization of dual-curing resin cements.
In Vitro Cytotoxicity of Self-Adhesive Dual-Cured Resin Cement Polymerized Beneath Three Different Cusp Inclinations of Zirconia

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of self-adhesive dual-cured resin cement (SADRC) polymerized beneath three different cusp inclinations of zirconia with different light curing time. A commercial SADRC (Multilink Speed) was polymerized beneath zirconia (ZrO 2 ) with three different cusp inclinations (0°, 20°, and 30°) for 20 s or 40 s. After being stored in light-proof box for 24 h, the ZrO 2 -SADRC specimens were immersed in DMEM for 72 h and then we got the extract solution, cultured the human gingival fibroblasts (HGF, 8 × 10 3 per well) with 100% or 50% concentrations of the extract solution for 24 h, 72 h, and 120 h, respectively, and evaluated cytotoxicity of the polymerized SADRC with CCK-8 assay in optical density (OD) values, relative growth rates (RGR), and cytotoxicity grades. Statistical analysis was conducted using a two-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Student–Newman–Keuls test. The OD values varied from 0.8930 to 3.2920, the RGR varied from 33.93% to 98.68%, and the cytotoxicity grades varied from 0 to 2. There was significant difference in the OD values among the different cusp inclinations of zirconia (P < 0.001), and there was significant difference in the OD values between the different light curing times in some situations (P < 0.05). The cusp inclination of zirconia affects the in vitro cytotoxicity of SADRC. Influence of the Bracket Material on the Post-Cure Degree of Conversion of Resin-Based Orthodontic Adhesive Systems

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the orthodontic bracket material on the short-term and long-term post-cure development of the degree of conversion (DC) of resin-based orthodontic adhesive systems. Five commercially available materials characterized by different compositions and curing modes (light-curable or dual-curable) were tested under three different light curing conditions: without brackets (control group, CO), and in the presence of metal brackets (MB group) or ceramic brackets (CB group). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to determine the post-cure DC development, both after "short-term" periods (2, 6, and 10 min) and "long-term" periods (1, 7, and 28 days). The short-term DC values ranged from 43.9% to 76.1%, and the long-term DC values were higher and ranged from 54.3% to 85.3%. The MB group demonstrated significantly lower short-term DC values compared to the CO and the CB groups, while the CB group had statistically similar or slightly lower DC values compared to the CO group. Long-term DC values in the MB and the CB groups were statistically lower or similar compared to the CO group, which depended on the post-cure time. The results indicated that the post-cure DC development was highly material-dependent and affected by the presence of different types of bracket material.

Abstract:The aim was to investigate the effects of different post-curing units on the chemical properties (degree of conversion) of 3D-printed resins for producing models in dentistry. The goal is to determine whether less-expensive post-curing units can be a viable alternative to the manufacturer's recommended units. Forty-five samples were fabricated with an LCD printer (Phrozen Sonic Mini, Phrozen 3D, Hsinchu City, Taiwan) using MSLA Dental Modeling Resin (Apply Lab Work, Torrance, CA, USA). These samples were divided randomly into four different groups for post-curing using four distinct curing units: Phrozen Cure V2 (Phrozen 3D, Hsinchu City, Taiwan), a commercial acrylic nail UV LED curing unit (SUNUV, Shenzhen, China), a homemade curing unit created from a readily available UV LED light produced (Shenzhen, China), and the Triad® 2000TM tungsten halogen light source (Dentsply Sirona, York, PA, USA). The degree of conversion was measured with FTIR spectroscopy using a Nicolet 6700 FTIR Spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Phrozen Cure V2 had the highest overall mean degree of conversion (69.6% with a 45 min curing time). The Triad® 2000 VLC Curing Unit had the lowest mean degree of conversion value at the 15 min interval (66.2%) and the lowest mean degree of conversion at the 45 min interval with the homemade curing unit (68.2%). The type of light-curing unit did not yield statistically significant differences in the degree of conversion values. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion values between the 15 min and 45 min curing intervals. When comparing individual light-curing units, there was a statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion for the post-curing units between the 15 min and 45 min curing time (p = 0.029).

Abstract:Dual-cure composites used for dental restorations offer photo- and self-activation, promising unlimited curing depth. This study examined depth of cure with respect to light- and self-cure capabilities.Four dual-cure composites (BulkEZ; Activa; HyperFIL; Injectafil) were tested, with bulk fill (Tetric) and universal (TPH) light-cure composites as comparison. Composites were irradiated from one direction in molds. Additionally, dual-cure composites were left to self-cure without irradiation. Vickers hardness was measured up to 6 mm deep. Results were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and pairwise comparisons (α = 0.05).Hardness dropped significantly with depth in light- and dual-cured composites, except BulkEZ. Self-cured dual-cure composites achieved constant hardness throughout their depth. Only BulkEZ was unaffected by curing mode. Irradiation significantly decreased hardness in middle sections of Hyperfil and Injectafil compared with self-cured samples.Dual-cure composites cured substantially through 6 mm depths but curing behaviors differed. Whereas irradiation did not affect one dual-cure composite, in two other dual-cure composites low-density light levels interfered with the self-polymerization aspect.

Abstract:The influence of different monomer on degree of conversion ( DC) and color stability of dental resin/ceramic composite materials was studied, as well as the effect of different curing methods. The degrees of conversion of monomer group increase in the order of Bis-GMA, Bis-EMA, UDMA, as 51.87%, 69.29%, 79.98%, respectively. And the color changes of these specimens show the opposite trend, as 1.780, 1.244, 0.534, respectively. When cured in different curing conditions, the degrees of conversion show a slow-growth with the increase of temperature, and light-cured specimens' degrees of conversion on specimens' surface is similar to that of heat-cured ones. Dual cured specimens show higher DC than merely light-cured or heat-cured ones. Thereinto, in dual cured system of heat-light-cured, the DC reaches 87.52%, much higher than 77.24% of merely heat-cured ones, which is of clinical significance.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Polymerization of light-cured resin-based materials is well documented; however, the intensity of the activating light can be reduced by passage through air, dental structure, or restoration compromising the physical properties of the restoration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the depth of cure of different light cured composite resins polymerized directly or transdental, through enamel and enamel/dentin tissues.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five composite resins were selected for this experiment: SureFil SDR, Dentsply (SDR), Filtek Supreme Plus, 3M ESPE (FSP), Aelite LS, Bisco (ALS), Filtek LS, 3M ESPE (FLS), and TPH, Dentsply (TPH). Thirty specimens of each material were prepared with 2- or 4-mm thickness. The specimens were light-cured (Elipar 2500, 3M ESPE) for 40 sec using three different protocols: direct or transdental, through a disc of enamel with 1 mm of thickness, and a disc of enamel and dentin with 2 mm of thickness. Eight Vickers microhardness (VH) measurements were taken from each specimen, four on top and four on bottom surface (Micromet, Buehler, 100 g per 15 sec). Data was analyzed with ANOVA three-way, Tukey HSD post-hoc (α = .05).RESULTS: Bottom surfaces of specimens exhibited statistically significant lower Vickers microhardness than the top surfaces for all composite resin evaluated, regardless of the curing conditions, except for the SDR when direct light-cured. Transdental light curing through enamel/dentin layer, significantly decreased VH (P<0.05) on the bottom surface of all composite groups.CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that light-curing attenuation of dental structures negatively affect the micro-hardness of composite resins.

Abstract:Introduction: Bonding to crystalline zirconia is currently a challenge. Properly cured adhesives are crucial to optimize this bond, and that in turn is influenced by the initial mobility of the system, as well as by the reactivity of the initiators. Aim: This study aimed to characterize adhesives containing monomer mixtures of different viscosities and double and triple photoinitiator systems; and to evaluate the bonding to Y-TZP zirconia, when adhesives were light-activated with monowave or polywave light-curing units (LCU). Materials and methods: Adhesives were formulated at a 1:1 weight proportion of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA or Bis-GMA/Bis-EMA. To these mixtures 0.5 wt% of CQ, 0.5–1.0 wt% of DABE, 0.5–1.0 wt% of DPIHP, or 0.5–1.0 wt% of TAS-Sb were added and used as photoinitiator systems. A total of ten adhesives were prepared. Resin composite cylinders were cemented on zirconia slices and 6000 thermal cycles were performed. Degree of conversion (DC), sorption (SO) and solubility (SL) after 7 days of water storage, and microshear bond strength (µSBS) were evaluated. Data were analyzed with three-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD (α = 0.05). Results: Bis-GMA/Bis-EMA combined with either CQ/DABE or CQ/DABE/TAS-Sb presented the highest DC, and no significant differences were observed for LCUs (p = .298). CQ/DABE < CQ/DABE/TAS-Sb ≈ CQ/DABE/DPIHP and the polywave LCU showed smaller overall SO (p < .05). Bis-GMA/TEGDMA with CQ/DABE cured with the polywave LCU presented the lowest SO. SL varied as follows: CQ/DABE/TAS-Sb < CQ/DABE/DPIHP < CQ/DABE (p < .001). For µSBS, only the factor photoinitiator system was significant (p = .045). All mean values were above 30 MPa, with higher values being observed for BIS-GMA/TEGDMA and CQ/DABE. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the adhesive containing CQ/DABE/TAS-Sb as coinitiator of Bis-GMA/Bis-EMA mixtures produced a material with higher DC and lower SL, while bond strength values were similar to the ones obtained by CQ/DABE.
