Abstract:Topological structures based on controllable ferroelectric or ferromagnetic domain configurations offer the opportunity to develop microelectronic devices such as high-density memories. Despite the increasing experimental and theoretical insights into various domain structures (such as polar spirals, polar wave, polar vortex) over the past decade, manipulating the topological transformations of polar structures and comprehensively understanding its underlying mechanism remains lacking. By conducting an in-situ non-contact bias technique, here we systematically investigate the real-time topological transformations of polar structures in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 multilayers at an atomic level. The procedure of vortex pair splitting and the transformation from polar vortex to polar wave and out-of-plane polarization are observed step by step. Furthermore, the redistribution of charge in various topological structures has been demonstrated under an external bias. This provides new insights for the symbiosis of polar and charge and offers an opportunity for a new generation of microelectronic devices.

Abstract:Rare-earth ion doped crystals are of great significance for microsensing and quantum information, while the ions in the crystals emit light with spontaneous partial polarization, which is, though believed to be originated from the crystal lattice structure, still lacking a deterministic explanation that can be tested with quantitative accuracy. We report experimental evidence showing the profound physical relation between the polarization degree of light emitted by the doped ion and the lattice symmetry by demonstrating, with high precision, that the lattice constant ratio c/a directly quantifies the macroscopic effective polar angle of the electric and magnetic dipoles, which essentially determines the linear polarization degree of the emission. Based on this result, we further propose a pure optical technology to identify the three-dimensional orientation of a rod-shaped single microcrystal using the polarization-resolved microspectroscopy. Our results, demonstrating the physical origin of light polarization in ion-doped crystals, allow work toward on-demand polarization control with crystallography and provide a versatile platform for polarization-based microscale sensing in dynamical systems.

Pressure-Regulated Dynamic Stereochemical Role of Lone-Pair Electrons in Layered Bi2O2S

Abstract:Lone-pair electrons (LPEs) ns2 in subvalent 14 and 15 groups lead to highly anharmonic lattice and strong distortion polarization, which are responsible for the groups' outstanding thermoelectric and optoelectronic properties. However, their dynamic stereochemical role in structural and physical properties is still unclear. Here, by introducing pressure to tune the behavior of LPEs, we systematically investigate the lone-pair stereochemical role in a Bi2O2S. The gradually suppressed LPEs during compression show a nonlinear repulsive electrostatic force, resulting in two anisotropic structural transitions. An orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition happens at 6.4 GPa, caused by the dynamic cation centering. This structural transformation effectively modulates the optoelectronic properties. Further compression beyond 13.2 GPa induces a 2D-to-3D structural transition due to the disappearance of the Bi-6s2 LPEs. Therefore, the pressure-induced LPE reconfiguration dominates these anomalous variations of lattice, electronic, and optical properties. Our findings provide new insights into the materials optimization by regulating the characters of LPEs.

Polarization-Dependent Anisotropy of LIPSSs' Morphology Evolution on a Single-Crystal Silicon Surface

Abstract:Utilizing the principle of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs), this research delves into the morphological evolution of single-crystal silicon surfaces irradiated by a near-infrared picosecond laser through a scanning mode. With the increase in laser energy density, the nanostructure morphology on single-crystal silicon surfaces induced by incident lasers with different polarization directions sequentially produces high spatial-frequency LIPSSs (HSFLs) with a period of 220 nm ± 10 nm parallel to the laser polarization, low spatial-frequency LIPSSs (LSFLs) with a period of 770 nm ± 85 nm perpendicular to the direction of the polarization, and groove structures. Furthermore, by varying the angle between the laser polarization and the scanning direction, the study examined the combined anisotropic effects of the laser polarization scanning direction angle and the laser polarization crystal orientation angle on the genesis of LIPSSs on single-crystal silicon (100) surfaces. The experiments revealed polarization-related anisotropic characteristics in the morphology of HSFLs. It was found that when the polarization angle approached 45°, the regularity of the LSFLs deteriorated, the modification width decreased, and the periodicity increased. This is critical for the precise control of the LSFLs' morphology.

Abstract:Manipulating single electrons at the atomic scale is vital for mastering complex surface processes governed by the transfer of individual electrons. Polarons, composed of electrons stabilized by electron-phonon coupling, offer a pivotal medium for such manipulation. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we report the identification and manipulation of a new type of polaron, dubbed van der Waals (vdW) polaron, within mono- to trilayer ultrathin films composed of Sb2O3 molecules that are bonded via vdW attractions. The Sb2O3 films were grown on a graphene-covered SiC(0001) substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. Unlike prior molecular polarons, STM imaging observed polarons at the interstitial sites of the molecular film, presenting unique electronic states and localized band bending. DFT calculations revealed the lowest conduction band as an intermolecular bonding state, capable of ensnaring an extra electron through locally diminished intermolecular distances, thereby forming an intermolecular vdW polaron. We also demonstrated the ability to generate, move, and erase such vdW polarons using an STM tip. Our work uncovers a new type of polaron stabilized by coupling with intermolecular vibrations where vdW interactions dominate, paving the way for designing atomic-scale electron transfer processes and enabling precise tailoring of electron-related properties and functionalities.

Abstract:Polarization light microscopes are powerful tools for probing molecular order and orientation in birefringent materials. While a number of polarization microscopy techniques are available to access steady-state properties of birefringent samples, quantitative measurements of the molecular orientation dynamics on the millisecond time scale have remained a challenge. We propose polarized shearing interference microscopy (PSIM), a single-shot quantitative polarization imaging method, for extracting the retardance and orientation angle of the laser beam transmitting through optically anisotropic specimens with complex structures. The measurement accuracy and imaging performance of PSIM are validated by imaging a birefringent resolution target and a bovine tendon specimen. We demonstrate that PSIM can quantify the dynamics of a flowing lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal in a microfluidic channel at an imaging speed of 506 frames per second (only limited by the camera frame rate), with a field-of-view of up to 350 × 350 μm2 and a diffraction-limit spatial resolution of ~2 μm. We envision that PSIM will find a broad range of applications in quantitative material characterization under dynamical conditions.

Quantification of polarization distribution from polarizing light microscopy images of ferroelectric single crystals

Abstract:Qualification of polarization can be realized either on a macroscopic scale as an average property by P-E hysteresis measurements or on a nano/micro scale by piezoelectric force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and so on. However, visualization and qualification of polarization distribution in the micron to millimeter scale is still a challenge. Polarizing light microscopy (PLM) is often used in the study of ferroelectric domain structures mainly for domain patterns. A phenomenon called “chromatic polarization” has been observed in transparent ferroelectric crystals by using a crossed-PLM system viewed with white light, which contains rich information about local polarization distribution. In this study, an automatic full-angle light intensity detection (AFALID) algorithm combined with colorimetry is developed to analyze the distribution of nonuniform local spontaneous polarization distribution in transparent ferroelectric single crystals. Temperature-dependent spontaneous polarizations from the color analysis for PMN-0.36PT single crystals with single tetragonal domain state are in good coincidence with those extracted from temperature-dependent hysteresis loops and pyroelectric current measurements. We further apply this method to quantify the nonuniform domain distributions with nano-indentations. This non-contact and non-destructive characterization can provide fast and automatic detection of polarization distributions in ferroelectric materials.

Abstract:Weakly coupled ferroelectric/dielectric superlattice thin film heterostructures exhibit complex nanoscale polarization configurations that arise from a balance of competing electrostatic, elastic, and domain-wall contributions to the free energy. A key feature of these configurations is that the polarization can locally have a significant component that is not along the thin-film surface normal direction, while maintaining zero net in-plane polarization. PbTiO3/SrTiO3 thin-film superlattice heterostructures on a conducting SrRuO3 bottom electrode on SrTiO3 have a room-temperature stripe nanodomain pattern with nanometer-scale lateral period. Ultrafast time-resolved x-ray free electron laser diffraction and scattering experiments reveal that above-bandgap optical pulses induce rapidly propagating acoustic pulses and a perturbation of the domain diffuse scattering intensity arising from the nanoscale stripe domain configuration. With 400 nm optical excitation, two separate acoustic pulses are observed: a high-amplitude pulse resulting from strong optical absorption in the bottom electrode and a weaker pulse arising from the depolarization field screening effect due to absorption directly within the superlattice. The picosecond scale variation of the nanodomain diffuse scattering intensity is consistent with a larger polarization change than would be expected due to the polarization-tetragonality coupling of uniformly polarized ferroelectrics. The polarization change is consistent instead with polarization rotation facilitated by the reorientation of the in-plane component of the polarization at the domain boundaries of the striped polarization structure. The complex steady-state configuration within these ferroelectric heterostructures leads to polarization rotation phenomena that have been previously available only through the selection of bulk crystal composition.

Abstract:Intrinsic linear polarized optics discovered in anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted intense interest for polarization-sensitive optical and optoelectronic applications, such as black phosphorous, ReSe2, etc. However, the lack of matured method to synthesize high-quality, large-scale and air-stable 2D materials with anisotropic properties, is still an obstacle for practical applications. Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which exhibits strong direct-band-gap light-harvesting properties, can be grown maturely. But unfortunately, MoS2 does not show linear dichroism owing to its in-plane isotropic crystalline symmetry. We, herein, for the first time, report on an artificial control of extrinsic linear polarized photoelectric effect in monolayer MoS2, by successfully controlling its anisotropic degree of in-plane crystal symmetry via artificially induced uniaxial tensile strain. Strong linear polarization-sensitive photodetection from visible to near-infrared range is realized for monolayer MoS2-based device, and the polarization anisotropic ratio can reach up over 2.0 under 4.5% strain. The observation is supported by combination of experiment-theory study on polarized Raman spectrum and optical absorption under gradually applied strains. Our results have demonstrated that the artificial-controlled symmetry reducing of MoS2 is a promising strategy to achieve high performance polarization photodetection. This method can also be extended to other 2D materials, which potentially opens up a new field to endow isotropic 2D materials with anisotropic functionalities by artificial structure engineering. Light-induced electronic polarization in antiferromagnetic Cr2O3

Abstract:In a solid, the electronic subsystem can exhibit incipient order with lower point group symmetry than the crystal lattice. External fields that couple to electronic order parameters have rarely been investigated, however, despite their potential importance to inducing exotic effects. Here, we show that when inversion symmetry is broken by the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in Cr2O3, transmitting a linearly polarized light pulse through the crystal gives rise to an in-plane rotational symmetry breaking (from C3 to C1) via optical rectification. Using interferometric time-resolved second harmonic generation, we show that the ultrafast timescale of the symmetry reduction is indicative of a purely electronic response; the underlying spin and crystal structures remain unaffected. The symmetry-broken state exhibits a dipole moment, and its polar axis can be controlled with the incident light. Our results establish a coherent nonlinear optical protocol by which to break electronic symmetries and produce unconventional electronic effects in solids.

Abstract:As one fundamental property of light, polarization has a huge impact in quantum optics and optoelectronics through light-matter interactions. However, the bright and near-unity polarized light emissions in the visible range by solid crystalline materials are scantly realized. Here, we report well-defined quasi two-dimensional (2D) hybrid crystals based on the linear alignment of Cu2I2-dimer/bidentate ligand hybrid clusters for achieving bright and near-unity linearly polarized light emissions. Using first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that the superaligned transition dipole moments are the key for the observed excellent polarized light emissions. To further enhance the photoluminescence (PL) polarization degree, we fabricate Cu2I2-dimer-based hybrid nanobelts, which display high PL quantum yield (up to 64%) and ultrahigh PL polarization degree (similar to 0.99). Our reported copper iodine cluster-based luminescent hybrid materials for bright and highly polarized light emissions will have great potential for future quantum optics applications.

Abstract:Control of inhomogeneity in materials in order to avoid unexpected effects to the system remains a challenge. In this study, we seek to engineer inhomogeneity in materials and anticipate new properties. Through precise control of composition at the atomic scale, an electrical polarization is induced in the composition-graded LaAlO 3 –SrTiO 3 solid solution epitaxially deposited on NdGaO 3 substrates. By tailoring the direction of compositional gradient, the relationship between structure and electrical polarization is simulated via phase-field modeling and revealed by a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The analysis of the results indicates that the induced polarization is due to the flexoelectric effect in the compositional gradient system. The results of this study provide a new pathway for obtaining a new material genome. Moreover, by a suitable design of the new genome, that is, by using different combinations of compositional gradient geometries, local conduction can be obtained and manipulated, providing a new approach to obtain the desired properties.

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between the local structures and physical properties of low-dimensional ferroelectrics is of both fundamental and practical importance. Here, pressure-induced enhancement in the photocurrent of SbSI is observed by using pressure to regulate the lone-pair electrons (LPEs). The reconfiguration of LPEs under pressure leads to the inversion symmetry broken in the crystal structure and an optimum bandgap according to the Shockley–Queisser limit. The increased polarization caused by the stereochemical expression of LPEs results in a significantly enhanced photocurrent at 14 GPa. Our research enriches the foundational understanding of structure–property relationships by regulating the stereochemical role of LPEs and offers a distinctive approach to the design of ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:Structural symmetry of crystals plays important roles in physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly in the nonlinear optics regime. It has been a long-term exploration on the physical properties in 2D materials with various stacking structures, which correspond to different structural symmetries. Usually, the manipulation of rotational alignment between layers in 2D heterostructures has been realized at the synthetic stage through artificial stacking like assembling Lego bricks. However, the reconfigurable control of translational symmetry of crystalline structure is still challenging. High pressure, as a powerful external control knob, provides a very promising route to circumvent this constraint. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a pressure-controlled symmetry transition in layered InSe. The continuous and reversible evolution of structural symmetries can be in-situ monitored by using the polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy. As pressure changes, the reconfigurable symmetry transition of the SHG pattern from three-fold rotational symmetry to mirror symmetry was experimentally observed in a layered InSe samples and was successfully explained by the proposed interlayer-translation model. This opens new routes towards potential applications of manipulating crystal symmetry of 2D materials.

Abstract:On the basis of rigorous dynamical-theory calculations, a complete X-ray polarization-switch effect of silicon crystals at the exact multiple-beam diffraction condition is demonstrated. The underlying physical mechanism of this unique phenomenon can be revealed using a simple multiple-wave propagation and interference model. The constructive and destructive interference of the multiple detoured-diffraction beams along the direction of the primary diffracted beam directly leads to the complete polarization switch. This phenomenon can be realized using both synchrotron and laboratory X-ray sources at many discrete wavelengths, and used to design a novel crystal-based polarizer to achieve a 90° polarization rotation.

Abstract:Epitaxial interfaces and superlattices comprised of polar and non-polar perovskite oxides have generated considerable interest because they possess a range of desirable properties for functional devices. By controlling the interfaces between polar LCO and non-polar STO, polarization is induced throughout the STO layers of the superlattice. Using x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy displacements of the Ti cations off-center within TiO6 octahedra along the superlattice growth direction are measured. This distortion gives rise to built-in potential gradients within the STO and LCO layers, as measured by in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory models explain the mechanisms underlying this behavior, revealing the existence of both an intrinsic polar distortion and a built-in electric field, which are due to alternately positively and negatively charged interfaces in the superlattice. This study paves the way for controllable polarization for carrier separation in multilayer materials and highlights the crucial role that interface structure plays in governing such behavior.

Polarization Field in Momentum Space of Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Slabs(Invited)

Abstract:Significance The two-dimensional photonic crystal slab (PhCS) is a structure characterized by the spatial periodicity of the dielectric constant within the plane. In contrast to traditional metamaterial surfaces, the two-dimensional PhCS enables light field manipulation in momentum space based on the Fourier principle, thus achieving complex and diverse functionalities. Since modes above the light cone can radiate to the far field and possess definite polarization states, polarization is matched with wave vectors, defining polarization fields in momentum space. Various polarization singularities exist within the polarization field, such as V points and C points. Previous studies generally focus on information such as frequency and momentum, while the polarization field can reflect the topological information of the bands and provide a new dimension for light field manipulation. For example, by controlling the evolution of polarization singularities, researchers have obtained bound states in the continuum (BICs) with robust characteristic and unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs). By utilizing these characteristics, researchers have designed high-performance lasers and realized complex light field manipulation and such functionalities as optical information processing. Compared to traditional structures, the two- dimensional PhCS exhibits non- local characteristics and has significant advantages in miniaturization and integration. Thus, it holds promising prospects for device applications. Studying the evolution of the polarization field helps guide the structural design of photonic crystal slabs, which expands the applications in communication, sensing, and other fields, and provides a deeper understanding of how topological photonics is manifested in optical systems. Progress We start by introducing the definition of the polarization field in the momentum space of the two-dimensional PhCS and introduce the concept of polarization singularities (Fig. 1). Subsequently, an analysis is conducted from the perspective of symmetry, with the relationship between the topological charge of polarization singularities and the in-plane point group symmetry examined (Fig. 2 and Table 2). Additionally, we outline the description of the polarization field using the temporal coupled mode theory ( TCMT). Furthermore, the conservation law followed by the topological charges during their evolution is discussed (Fig. 3) to detail the research on the evolution of polarization singularities based on whether the band is non-degenerate or degenerate. It is observed that non-degenerate V points correspond to BICs and are split into more fundamental C points during symmetry change ( Fig. 4). The evolution of these polarization singularities is controlled by structural parameters and symmetry (Fig. 5). Degenerate V points typically correspond to band degeneracy points and are also influenced by structural parameters and symmetry (Fig. 6). Based on the evolution patterns of polarization singularities, researchers have designed robust merging BICs and utilized the topological charge to generate vortex beams and beam shifts (Fig. 7), providing significant guidance for laser design. Furthermore, by altering the out- ofplane symmetry, UGR can be achieved (Fig. 8). Additionally, appropriately designed PhCS can achieve full coverage on the Poincare sphere and perform complex image processing tasks such as edge detection ( Fig. 9). Conclusions and Prospects Generally, the investigation of the polarization field characteristics of PhCS guides the design of appropriate structures and can help achieve complex and rich functionalities. Despite the presence of numerous unresolved physical issues currently, the application potential of the polarization field remains largely untapped. However, these unknowns are expected to stimulate enthusiasm for exploration and boost progress in related fields.
Polarization multistates in antiferroelectric van der Waals materials

Abstract:The bistability of charge polarization in ferroelectric materials has long been the basis of ferroelectric devices. However, the ferroelectricity tends to be vanishing as the thickness of materials is reduced to a few nanometers or thinner due to the depolarization field. Instead, they show a paraelectric or an antiferroelectric ordering in the ultra-thin limit, which is unfavorable for their applications in devices. Here we uncover polarization multistates in thin films of van der Waals materials, in which the individual monolayers have an antiferroelectric ordering with out-of-plane polarizations. This property results from a unique combination of the polarization and layer degrees of freedom. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that bilayers and trilayers of the CuInP$_2$S$_6$ family possess quintuple and septuple polarization states., respectively. Our climbing image nudged elastic band calculations for the bilayers and trilayers of CuInP$_2$S$_6$ and CuCrP$_2$S$_6$ further show that the states can be transformed into each other under appropriate external electric fields, for which a unique layer-selective half-layer-by-half-layer flipping mechanism governs the transformings. Our study opens up a door to design unusual polarization states using intrinsic degrees of freedom of layered antiferroelectrics for the next-generation ferroelectric devices that go beyond the bistability paradigm.
