Abstract:It is known that smoking is one of the current social and medical problems of today, a proven cause of many serious diseases — a risk factor for more than 20 diseases, which account for almost 75% of the causes of mortality (cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory, dental, etc.). Ukraine ranks 17th in the world in terms of cigarette consumption. It is worrying that this bad habit is very common among children and adolescents, because adolescence is crucial in terms of worldview, life values, attitudes to bad habits, including smoking. More than 500 000 young people join this bad habit every year. It has been established that the components of tobacco smoke affect the mucous membrane of the oral cavity both directly and indirectly — toxic substances enter the salivary glands with the bloodstream and are excreted with saliva in the oral cavity. Changes in oral fluid may be the first signs of disease caused by a bad habit. Oral fluid can act as a diagnostic indicator that reflects the condition of the organs of the oral cavity and the whole body, as well as to predict the course of the disease, to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Purpose — to study the properties of oral fluid in in teenagers and young adults who smoke. Materials and methods. The properties of oral fluid (rate of salivation, pH, buffer capacity and viscosity of oral fluid) in 114 adolescents and adolescents aged 15 to 24 years, which were divided into groups: Group I included 26 people who regularly smoke traditional cigarettes; in group II — 22 people who regularly smoke electronic cigarettes (Weipi); in group III — 23 people who regularly smoke tobacco heating devices (IQOS); in group IV — 43 people, without a bad habit of smoking. Results. When studying the properties of oral fluid in adolescents and young adults, the dependence of its indicators on the presence of a bad habit and type of smoking was revealed. Adolescents and adolescents who smoke both traditional and alternative types of cigarettes in the oral cavity have a decrease in the level of functional reactions that are responsible for the homeostasis of the oral cavity and depend on the type of cigarettes. Analysis of changes in the biophysical parameters of oral fluid indicate a decrease in the level of functional reserves of the oral cavity. Conclusions. Тeenagers and young adults who smoke have changes in the biophysical parameters of oral fluid. Oral fluids can be an early prognostic test to assess the condition of the oral cavity in adolescents and adolescents who smoke. The research was carried out in accordance with the principles of the Helsinki declaration. The study protocol was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of the participating institution. The informed consent of the patient was obtained for conducting the studies. No conflict of interest was declared by the authors. STRUCTURE AND PREVALENCE OF PERIODONTIC TISSUE DISEASES IN SMOKERS USING TOBACCO HEATING PRODUCTS

Abstract:Periodontal pathologies are one of the predominant groups of oral cavity diseases, so the problem of their treatment or prevention is quite relevant. Periodontal disease in patients who use tobacco heating systems is currently understudied. Materials and methods of research. The study involved 187 people using tobacco heating products (the main group) and 60 people without this habit (comparison group), without other concomitant diseases. Patients were examined according to generally accepted methods: subjective (life history and medical history) and objective (examination, percussion, palpation, probing) parts, as well as radiographic analysis. Structural dystrophic changes in the bone tissues were thoroughly assessed using orthopantomography. Research results. It was found that chronic catarrhal gingivitis and localized periodontitis in patients of the main group who smoked using tobacco heating devices occurred 3, 7, and 2.8 less often than in the comparison group (p <0.01, p <0.05). Generalized periodontitis of initial severity in patients of the main group was 3.6 times more common than in patients of the comparison group (29.95 ± 3.35% vs. 8.33 ± 3.56%, p<0.01). Grade I GP was detected in 78 patients who smoked using tobacco heating devices (41.71±3.61%), which was 2.8 times higher than in the comparison group (15.00 ± 4, 60%, p 0.05 and 20.59 ± 6.93%, respectively, in patients aged 26 36 years 22.39 ± 5.09% and 16.42 ± 4.53%, respectively, p> 0.05, and in patients aged 37 44 years, HCG and localized periodontitis were not diagnosed at all, p <0.01. In patients of the main group aged 18 25 years, GP of initial severity was diagnosed in 50.0 ± 8.57% of subjects p <0.01 and decreased with age to 40.30 ± 5.99% in patients aged 26 36, p 0.05. In the age range of 18 25 years in patients who smoked using tobacco heating devices, GP I severity was not found, but at the age of 26 36 years, this disease was detected in 20.89 ± 4.97% of examined patients, p 0.05. GP of the II severity degree was diagnosed only in the older age group (37 44 years) in 11.63 ± 3.46% of patients in the main group, p 0,05. GP of the II severity degree in the comparison group was not diagnosed. Analyzing the impact of smoking on age groups, it was found that the features of early dystrophic-inflammatory lesions of the periodontium and its rapid progression due to atrophic-osteoporotic processes in the macroorganism were caused by tobacco consumption. Conclusion. The analysis of the obtained studies showed that patients who smoke using tobacco heating devices tended to increase the frequency of periodontal diseases and their severity. The prospect of further research is to study the structure and prevalence of periodontal disease in people who smoke using devices for heating tobacco depending on the time of smoking, as well as the development and implementation of individual effective treatment and prevention measures.

Abstract:Relevance . Over the past few years, the popularity of nicotine-containing substances and tobacco heating systems has continued to grow, while the demand for conventional tobacco leaf cigarettes has been falling. Electronic cigarettes consist of a heating system and a liquid with various flavorings. During the operation of the heating stick, the liquid is converted into an aerosol, which the user needs to inhale. First of all, the hot steam comes into contact with the oral cavity. The aerosol components settle on the oral mucosa, the approximal surfaces of the teeth, penetrating the body with a saliva current, expose the oral cavity to prolonged exposure, causing various changes in the oral cavity and causing discomfort to the smoker. This problem is urgent and based on the above, it is necessary to study all possible effects of cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems on the human body. Purpose. To assess the impact of nicotine-containing products and smokeless tobacco on the oral mucosa. Materials and methods . A cohort of 98 patients, aged 20 to 60, was recruited for the study. Participants were divided into four groups: Group 1 consisted of conventional cigarette smokers; Group 2, users of vapes; Group 3, users of IQOS; and Group 4 included patients who used all three device types interchangeably. Results . The investigation identified a direct correlation between the participant's age, the device used, and their level of oral hygiene. The poorest oral hygiene was seen in Group 4, where individuals used a combination of conventional cigarettes, vapes, and IQOS. Although a majority acknowledged the harmful effects of tobacco products, only 33 participants were aware of the negative impacts associated with vapes and IQOS. Conclusion . The lack of regulation and awareness of the health risks associated with IQOS and vaping pose substantial challenges for healthcare, indicating a need for more research into these issues.
Do Readers Mentally Represent Characters' Emotional States?

Abstract:Subjects read stories that described concrete actions, such as a main character stealing money from a store where his best friend worked and later learning that his friend had been fired. Following each story, subjects read a target sentence that contained an emotion word that either matched the emotional state implied by the story (e.g. guilt) or mismatched that emotional state. In Experiment 1, target sentences were read more slowly when the mismatched emotion words were the perceived opposites of the emotional states implied by the stories (e.g. pride). In Experiment 2, target sentences were read more slowly when the mismatched emotion words shared the affective valence of the implied emotional state; therefore, readers must represent more than simply the affective valence of the emotional states. Instead of reading target sentences that contained matching versus mismatching emotion words, subjects in Experiment 3 simply pronounced matching versus mismatching emotion words. Mismatching emotion words were pronounced more slowly. These experiments suggest that readers form explicit, lifelike, mental representations of fictional characters' emotional states, and readers form these representations as a normal part of reading comprehension.
Tobacco products and oral conditions among US adults: NHANES 2017–2020

Abstract:Objectives Smoking is a major global health problem with serious systemic and oral consequences. This study aims at assessing the influence of smoking cigarettes and other types of smoked tobacco on oral conditions (OCs) using a representative sample of US adults. Methods Pre‐pandemic data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017–2020 were utilized, and 7840 adults aged ≥30 years were included in our analyses. Descriptive statistics, logistic, and negative binomial regression models were performed to assess the relationship between tobacco products and OCs including, tooth loss (TL), coronal (CC) and root caries (RC). Results Overall, 16.29% of our sample were current cigarette smokers (CCS). TL (17.25%) and untreated RC (28.26%) were more evident among CCS. In the adjusted regression models, smoking cigarettes was associated with RC (AOR: 3.20, 95% CI; 2.02, 5.09), untreated CC (IRR: 3.08, 95% CI: 1.50, 6.31), and TL (IRR: 2.18, 95% CI: 1.64, 2.88). Regarding the type of used tobacco product in the past 5 days, cigarettes were the most common type (15.03%). The adjusted model indicated that e‐cigarette smokers had the highest odds of untreated RC (AOR: 5.17, 95% CI: 2.19, 12.23) and the highest rate of TL (IRR: 2.21, 95% CI: 1.45, 3.35). Further, cigar smokers had the highest rate of teeth with untreated CC (IRR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.46, 7.25). Conclusions Using tobacco products is associated with poor OCs. Dentists, being the primary oral health care providers, can play a crucial role in counseling and supporting smokers to quit as part of their routine dental examination.

Molecular Cloning of a Human Monoclonal Antibody Reactive to Ganglioside GM 3 Antigen on Human Cancers 1

Abstract:In this study we report the characterization of a human monoclonal antibody (HuMab), L612, that reacts with ganglioside GM3 and has thera peutic application for the treatment of human neoplasms, particularly melanoma. A permanent IgM-secreting Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B-cell line L612 was established. L612 HuMab bound specifically to neoplastic cell lines in culture and in tissue biopsy specimens such as mela noma, colon, breast, and lung cancer. The antibody did not bind to normal cells or biopsy tissue. HuMab L612 showed the highest reactivity to mela noma cells, particularly to those with high concentrations of GM3. Immunostaining on high-performance thin-layer chromatography plates demonstrated that L612 HuMab bound to (.\,, purified from melanoma cells. Removal of the sialic acid from GM.<abolished antibody binding. HuMab L612 also reacted to (.,,, purified from egg yolk, indicating that it recognizes an NeuAca2-3 galactose antigen determinant. HuMab L612 heavy and light chains were sequenced and determined to belong to the /.i heavy chain variable subgroup III and K chain variable subgroup IV families, respectively. The studies indicate that the L612 HuMab has significant therapeutic potential for a wide variety of human cancers.
Cigarette smoking associated with advanced periodontal destruction in a Greek sample population of patients with periodontal disease

Abstract:Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible risk factor related to the severity of periodontal destruction in an adult Greek population and to determine possible risk factors of chronic periodontal disease. Methods: The 115 participants (mean age 47.5, range 28-74 years) were referred for periodontal treatment in two high-standard therapeutic centers. All individuals were clinically examined and answered a detailed questionnaire. The sociodemographic characteristics and periodontal findings were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results: The prevalence of periodontal destruction was significantly high, as 91.3% of the participants had at least one tooth with attachment loss > or = 7 mm and 73% presented with mean loss of attachment > 4 mm. In this subject cohort, 31.3% had never smoked, 15.7% had quit smoking, and 53% were currently smokers (heavy, moderate, or occasional). Heavy smokers exhibited worse periodontal tissue breakdown and less bleeding tendency compared to moderate, infrequent, or never smokers. Among the other investigated parameters, age and customary oral hygiene practices were correlated with periodontal pocket formation and clinical attachment loss. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that smoking appears to be a major environmental factor associated with accelerated periodontal destruction in an adult urban Greek population with regular oral hygiene habits.

Abstract:PtM overlayers (where M=Fe, Co or Ni) supported on Pt{111} are prepared via thermal annealing in either a nitrogen/water or hydrogen ambient of dilute aqueous droplets containing M(Z+) cations directly attached to the electrode. Two different PtM phases are detected depending on the nature of the post-annealing cooling environment. The first of these consists of small (<20 nm), closely packed microcrystals comprised of a central metallic core and a shell (several monolayers thick) of mixed metal oxides/hydroxides. The second type of PtM phase is prepared by cooling in a stream of hydrogen gas. Although this second phase also consists of numerous microcrystals covering the Pt{111} electrode surface, these are both flatter than before and moreover are entirely metallic in character. A positive shift in the onset of PtM oxide formation correlates with increased activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which we ascribe to the greater availability of platinum metallic sites under ORR conditions.
The use of electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products among university students and their potential relationship with oral health: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate oral alterations among university students and explore possible associations with tobacco consumption in its various forms. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 phases: the first phase involved administering an electronic questionnaire to participants determine the prevalence of tobacco use and the second phase involved a physical examination of the participants. The participants were grouped on the basis of their reported habits and compared using statistical analysis (P < .05). Results: Of the 620 participants, 57.1% reported using tobacco in some form, with 47.4% reporting electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use. In the clinical phase, comparing the presence of oral changes in tobacco users vs nonusers, e-cigarette users had a higher proportion of white-spot caries lesions (P = .041) and gingivitis (P = .012). When e-cigarette use was combined with other forms of tobacco use, additional oral changes were more prevalent, including coated tongue and nicotinic stomatitis (P < .05). Conclusions: The use of alternative forms of tobacco consumption is common among university students, with e-cigarette use being the most prevalent form, and may lead to detrimental effects on the oral cavity, such as caries and gingivitis, particularly when used in conjunction with other tobacco products. Practical implications: The use of tobacco in alternative forms, such as e-cigarettes, can affect oral health directly or indirectly. Dentists should be familiar with the characteristics of this population and the potential oral repercussions associated with tobacco use to address the impact on health and raise awareness of the associated risks.

Risk factors of smoking among students of higher medical educational establishments of ukraine

Abstract:Objective: Introduction: Studies of domestic scientists show the unsatisfactory state of health of the population of Ukraine. This is due to a number of socio-economic, political, environmental problems, a low level of material support for the majority of the population, as well as the prevalence of bad habits. Of particular interest is the spread of bad habits among young people, in particular smoking, its connection with various social factors and the impact on health. The aim: The main aim of the study is studying of the factors that cause the spread of smoking among students of higher medical educational establishments of Ukraine and their dependence on the social and economic situation of young people; to investigate the root causes of smoking among students; to analyze the level of the desire to lead a healthy lifestyle and quit smoking in the studied educational establishments. Patients and methods: Materials and methods: 435 questionnaires of students of two higher medical educational establishments were analyzed: the Bogomolets` National Medical University, Kiev - 180 and the HSEE of Ukraine «UMSA», Poltava - 255. Results: Results:The study showed that of all respondents, have they tried to smoke once, 268 (61,6%) gave a positive response, and 167 (38,4%) indicated that they had no experience of using tobacco. Among all respondents 162 smoke for the sake of curiosity and in percentage terms it is 37,2%. The personal drama went to the second place and this reason was named by 43 respondents and this is 9,9%. The third position was a combination of two factors of curiosity and drama and is 3,0%. Conclusion: Conclusions: As a result of the study, there is a significant difference between students on smoking daily- 36,7% versus 27.8% (p = 0,05). Some differences among the students of the study groups regarding the visit to entertaining establishments - 56,7% of students of the Bogomolets NMU were determined against 53,7% of the students from the UMSA, but these data are not reliable (р=0,33).
[Correlation Between Cigarette Smoking and Periodontal Status: A Survey on the Population of a Community above 35-Year-old in Beijing].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To survey the cigarette smoking status and periodontal status, and to study the correlation between cigarette smoking and periodontal status. METHODS:Questionnaires were distributed (including self-assessed periodontal status, such as bleeding while brushing teeth, oral odor, tooth loosening, gum swelling, etc.) and clinical periodontal examinations performed for parameters including probing depth (PD), bleeding index (BI), attachment loss (AL), plaque index (PLI) and amount of teeth loss, which was recorded in the population above 35 years of a community in Beijing. A total of 974 subjects were recruited in the study. The population was divided into current smokers and non-smokers, and the differences of self-assessed periodontal status and periodontal parameters between the groups analyzed. RESULTS:The smokers had significantly less bleeding during toothbrushing, and in the meantime, had significantly more self-reported tooth loosening compared with the non-smokers. The smokers brushed their teeth less than the non-smokers (P<0.05). The self-reported gum swelling and oral odor had no significant difference between the smokers and non-smokers. The smokers had 0.565 times and 1.572 times the risk of bleeding during toothbrushing, self-reported tooth loosening and from Logistic regression analyses, respectively (P<0.05). The mean PD, AL, PLI and the amount of tooth loss of the smokers were significant higher than the non-smokers (P<0.05). However, the mean BI of the smokers was slightly less than the non-smokers' (1.93±0.540 vs. 1.94±0.512, P=0.707). The smokers had 2.129 times, 1.698 times and 1.933 times the risk of the mean PD>3 mm, the mean AL>3 mm, and the amount of tooth loss above 8, respectively compared with the non-smokers (P<0.05) from Logistic regression analyses. CONCLUSION:The self-assessed periodontal status is different between smokers and non-smokers in the population of a community in Beijing. Smokers have less bleeding during toothbrushing but no significant difference with BI. Smokers also have more self-reported tooth loosening. Compared with non-smokers, smokers have more severe periodontal destruction.
Tobacco Use and Incidence of Adverse Oral Health Outcomes Among US Adults in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study

Abstract:Importance: Evolving tobacco use patterns, including increasing electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use, warrant re-examination of the associations between tobacco use and oral health. Objective: To examine associations between tobacco product use and incidence of adverse oral health outcomes. Design, setting, and participants: This cohort study used nationally representative data from wave (W) 1 to W5 (2013-2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Recruitment used a stratified address-based, area-probability household sample of the noninstitutionalized US civilian population. The W1 cohort included respondents aged 18 years and older without lifetime history of oral health outcomes at W1 or W3, depending on when the outcome was first assessed. Data analysis was performed from October 2021 to September 2022. Exposures: Current (every day or someday use) established (lifetime use of at least 100 cigarettes or "fairly regular" use of other products) use of cigarettes, ENDS, cigars, pipes, hookah, snus, and smokeless tobacco, excluding snus at W1 to W4. Main outcomes and measures: The primary outcomes were past 12-month self-reported diagnosis of gum disease and precancerous oral lesions (W2-W5) and bone loss around teeth, bleeding after brushing or flossing, loose teeth, and 1 or more teeth removed (W4-W5). Results: Sample sizes varied across the 6 oral health outcomes (13 149 respondents for the gum disease sample, 14 993 respondents for the precancerous oral lesions sample, 16 312 respondents for the bone loss around teeth sample, 10 286 respondents for the bleeding after brushing or flossing sample, 15 686 respondents for the loose teeth sample, and 12 061 respondents for the 1 or more teeth removed sample). Slightly more than half of adults (52%-54% across the 6 samples) were women, and the majority were of non-Hispanic White race and ethnicity. Cox proportional hazards models were developed with covariates that included time-dependent tobacco use variables mutually adjusted for each other. Cigarette smoking was positively associated with incidence of gum disease diagnosis (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 1.33; 95% CI, 1.11-1.60), loose teeth (AHR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.05-1.75), and 1 or more teeth removed (AHR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.18-1.74). Cigar smoking was positively associated with incidence of precancerous oral lesions (AHR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.38-3.43). In addition, hookah smoking was positively associated with incidence of gum disease diagnosis (AHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.20-2.63), and ENDS use was positively associated with incidence of bleeding after brushing or flossing (AHR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.04-1.54). No associations were observed between snus and smokeless tobacco excluding snus and incidence of oral health outcomes. Conclusions and relevance: The observed associations of combustible tobacco use with incidence of several adverse oral health outcomes and ENDS use with incidence of bleeding after brushing or flossing highlight the importance of longitudinal studies and emphasize the continued importance of tobacco cessation counseling and resources in clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare effects of smoking and smokeless forms of tobacco consumption (tobacco chewing) on periodontal disease parameters and response of these subjects to non-surgical periodontal therapy. Methods: One hundred sixty-eight patients with chronic periodontitis were screened for the study. Eighteen patients were excluded as they decided to quit the tobacco habit. One hundred fifty patients fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were grouped as: Group 1, 50 smokers; Group 2, 50 tobacco chewers; and Group 3, 50 non-smokers, non-tobacco chewers (controls). Scaling and root planing was performed at the initial visit as a part of initial therapy. The clinical parameters recorded at baseline, 1 month, 2 months and 3 months were plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) measurement. Results: With respect to the comparison between smokers and tobacco chewers, smokers had significantly more probing depth at baseline examination, while tobacco chewers had more gingival recession. Gingival inflammation, response to non-surgical treatment and oral hygiene maintenance were more suppressed in smokers as compared to tobacco chewers. Conclusion: Tobacco consumption in both forms affects the severity of periodontal disease. It affects the response of periodontal tissues to non-surgical treatment. In addition it leads to poorer oral hygiene and hampers maintenance of oral hygiene.

Abstract:The electronic cigarette is a nicotine delivery device that appears as an alternative to the traditional cigarette. As for its epidemiology, the incidence is higher among young males aged 15 to 24 years, especially those who are still in the school environment. Thus, prolonged use of this electronic system can cause periodontitis, which is a multifactorial disease aggravated by smoking, since salivary nicotine levels alter the oral microbiota and gingival blood flow, decreasing the immune response. Therefore, this study aimed to make a bibliographic survey on the correlation between the use of electronic cigarettes and the development of periodontitis in young people. As for the methodology used, it consists of a narrative literature review, through searches in the Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE and LILACS databases via VHL in the period from 2013 to 2022. Through this, it was found that the causes that lead young people to use these devices are, above all, social and that the vapor of the electronic cigarette is an aggravating factor for the formation of periodontitis in young people due to the changes caused at the cellular level. However, the population still does not have total knowledge of the clinical findings that prove this relationship, making it difficult to raise awareness, and therefore, to minimize this habit. In view of this, the dental surgeon has the role of preventing the evolution of periodontitis by warning about the risks of continuing to use electronic cigarettes.

Abstract:Introduction: Tobacco use is one of the main causes of periodontitis. E-cigarette are gaining in popularity, and studies are needed to better understand the impact of e-cigarettes on oral health. Objective: To perform a longitudinal study to evaluate the adverse effects of e-cigarettes on periodontal health. Methods: Naïve E-cigarette users, cigarette smokers, and non-smokers were recruited using newspaper and social media. Age, gender, and ethnicity, were recorded. Participants were scheduled for two visits 6 months apart. At each visit, we collected data on the frequency and magnitude of e-cigarette and cigarette use, and alcohol consumption. Carbon monoxide (CO) levels, cotinine levels, salivary flow rate, periodontal probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were also determined at both baseline and follow-up visits and compared between groups with two-way repeated measures ANOVA. Periodontal diagnosis and other categorical variables were compared between groups with the chi-square statistic and logistic regression. Results: We screened 159 subjects and recruited 119 subjects. One-hundred-one subjects (31 cigarette smokers, 32 e-cigarette smokers, and 38 non-smokers) completed every assessment in both visits. The retention and compliance rate of subjects was 84.9%. The use of social media and craigslist was significant in recruiting e-cigarette subjects. Ethnicity and race differed between groups, as did average age in the male subjects. Carbon monoxide and salivary cotinine levels were highest among cigarette smokers. Bleeding on probing and average PDs similarly increased over time in all three groups, but CAL uniquely increased in e-cigarette smokers. Rates of severe periodontal disease were higher in cigarette smokers and e-cigarette users than non-smokers, but interpretation is confounded by the older age of the cigarette smokers. Conclusion: Among the recruited participants, CAL after 6 months was significantly worse only in the e-cigarette smokers. This study design and protocol will assist in future larger studies on e-cigarette and oral health.

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of smokeless tobacco, areca nut, and e-cigarette use among university students has raised concerns regarding their potential impact on oral health. Assessing students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward these substances is necessary. Understanding these factors can inform targeted interventions and policies promoting oral health among this population. This study aims to investigate the awareness levels, attitudes, and behaviors of university students regarding smokeless tobacco, areca nut, and e-cigarette use and their potential effects on oral health. Identifying gaps in knowledge and misconceptions will help guide educational initiatives and public health interventions tailored to the needs of university students. Methodology: The study employed a designed questionnaire, comprising 20 closed-ended queries, administered via the Google Forms platform. This survey was disseminated among college students in Chennai to gather insights for the study. Results: Of the 500 college students included in the study, almost 85.5% (427) were aware of the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco on oral health. Additionally, 74.6% (373) recognized that chewing areca nut contributes to poor oral health, while 59.8% (299) acknowledged the negative impact of e-cigarette use. Conclusions: The present study concluded that 11.1% (6) used smokeless tobacco, 18.9% (94) chewed areca nut, and 1.9% (10) used areca nut along with tobacco. Regarding e-cigarettes, 3.9% (19) indulged in vaping as a substitute for smoking regular cigarettes and 12.1% (61) used it along with tobacco cigarettes. It was also noted that 27.8% (139) were trying to quit and 12.6% (63) have tried but could not succeed. Therefore, although there was awareness of the ill effects of these deleterious habits on oral health and the increased risk of oral cancer, there remains a need to educate individuals and provide support for quitting these habits. Our study will provide insights into the present scenario of the awareness of the association between oral health and tobacco/areca nut consumption among college students in Chennai city.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Tobacco is responsible for infaust oral conditions and many oral diseases. Dental caries is one of the most prevalent oral diseases. The association between tobacco smoking and dental caries has become an important recent topic of research. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between tobacco smoking and dental caries.METHODS: A literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed, EMBASE, Medline and Cochrane, up to December 2018. Original observational articles that estimated relevance between tobacco smoking and dental caries in adults were included. Caries were determined by measurements of decayed, missing or filled teeth (DMFT), or decayed, missing or filled surface (DMFS), or caries-related microflora levels. Trials did not include a non-smoking group, exposure to smokeless tobacco products, or participants under 16 years old. Also, literature reviews, comments, case reports and letters to the editor were not considered. Both methods of systematic review and meta-analysis were adopted. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the methodological quality of all the included studies.RESULTS: Ten out of eleven of the included studies indicated a positive association between tobacco smoking and dental caries. Two meta-analyses were performed: one included five studies using DMFT as an outcome; the other included two studies of DMFS. A random effects model was used. Both were highly heterogeneous (I2=93%, chi-squared p<0.00001; I2=70%, chi-squared p=0.07, respectively) and statistically significant (mean difference, MD=1.20, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.40-2.00, z-test p=0.003; MD=1.88, 95% CI: 0.99-2.77, z-test p<0.0001, respectively). The quality scores of all varied from 7 to 9.CONCLUSIONS: There is a correlation between tobacco smoking and an increased risk of dental caries. However, the overall representativeness of the studies is not good. More prospective and extensive research on this topic is needed to get validation. Even so, it is imperative that people quit tobacco smoking.
