Abstract:The escalating global concern over water pollution, predominantly propelled by industrial activities, underscores the urgency for effective environmental remediation strategies. Of particular, concern is the discharge of synthetic colorants into water bodies, a prevailing issue notably pervasive in textile industries. Azo dyes, ubiquitous in various industrial sectors, including food and textile manufacturing, constitute a significant portion of dye-contaminated wastewater, thereby contributing to soil and water pollution, especially in emerging and economically challenged nations. The deleterious impact of azo dyes on human health and aquatic ecosystems heightens the urgency of addressing this environmental menace. In response to the imperative need for mitigating the adverse effects of azo dyes on the environment, human health, and natural water resources, a spectrum of physio-chemical technologies has been proposed for azo dye degradation. However, a noteworthy paradigm shift toward environmentally friendly approaches is increasingly imperative. This comprehensive review critically examines various strategies employed for the degradation of Acid Orange 7, a representative azo dye, encompassing physical, chemical, and biological interventions. In the realm of biological treatment, the focus is predominantly on microorganisms such as fungi, yeast, bacteria, and algae, which have emerged as promising agents due to their inherent eco-friendly nature. This article provides an in-depth exploration of microbial remediation strategies, highlighting recent advancements in degradation techniques and elucidating the intricate mechanisms underlying azo dye degradation by bacteria. This review aims not only to present a consolidated overview of existing technologies but also to underscore the importance of harnessing the potential of microorganisms in the treatment of azo-dye-containing wastewater. The comprehensive insights provided herein contribute to the evolving discourse on sustainable and environmentally benign approaches for mitigating the impact of azo dyes on global water resources.

Abstract:Textile effluents constitute a significant source of environmental contamination due to the substantial discharge of recalcitrant azo dyes. These synthetic xenobiotic compounds, extensively employed across various industries, represent a predominant class of colorants. The persistence of azo dyes in aquatic ecosystems poses a formidable threat to biota, encompassing flora, fauna, and anthropogenic populations. These recalcitrant pollutants can infiltrate agricultural systems through irrigation practices, facilitating their entry into trophic networks and eliciting deleterious effects on human health. Conventional physico-chemical treatment methodologies have been implemented for the remediation of dye-laden wastewater; however, the inherent stability and color-fastness of azo dyes render the decolorization process arduous. Stringent environmental regulations have been promulgated to mitigate the discharge of these hazardous compounds into aquatic systems. Bioremediation emerges as a promising solution for the effective treatment of toxic synthetic dyes. This review elucidates biological decolorization technologies for azo dyes exhibiting carcinogenic, mutagenic, and phytotoxic properties. It explores microbial biodecolorization mechanisms, emphasizing the roles of bacteria, fungi, and algae, and their enzymes in the adsorption and degradation of dye molecules, facilitating their complete mineralization into innocuous entities. Strategies to enhance biodecolorization efficiencies, such as sequential aerobic-anaerobic decolorization and immobilization techniques, are also discussed. Immobilization of biological decolorizers enables their long-term efficient utilization. Various technologically advanced interdisciplinary approaches to mitigate azo dye problems have also been covered. This comprehensive review aims to guide researchers and environmentalists in devising effective treatment modalities for toxic dye remediation and environmental conservation.

Abstract:Textile dyes are the burgeoning environmental contaminants across the world. They might be directly disposed of from textile industries into the aquatic bodies, which act as the direct source for the entire ecosystem, ultimately impacting the human beings. Hence, it is essential to dissect the potential adverse outcomes of textile dye exposure on aquatic plants, aquatic fauna, terrestrial entities, and humans. Analysis of appropriate literature has revealed that textile dye effluents could affect the aquatic biota by disrupting their growth and reproduction. Various aquatic organisms are targeted by textile dye effluents. In such organisms, these chemicals affect their development, behavior, and induce oxidative stress . General populations of humans are exposed to textile dyes via the food chain and drinking contaminated water. In humans, textile dyes are biotransformed into electrophilic intermediates and aromatic amines by the enzymes of the cytochrome family. Textile dyes and their biotransformed products form the DNA and protein adducts at sub-cellular moiety. Moreover, these compounds catalyze the production of free radicals and oxidative stress, and trigger the apoptotic cascades to produce lesions in multiple organs. In addition, textile dyes modulate epigenetic factors like DNA methyltransferase and histone deacetylase to promote carcinogenesis. Several bioremediation approaches involving algae, fungi, bacteria, biomembrane filtration techniques, etc., have been tested and some other hybrid systems are currently under investigation to treat textile dye effluents. However, many such approaches are at the trial stage and require further research to develop more efficient, cost-effective, and easy-to-handle techniques.

Abstract:The textile industry, with its extensive use of dyes and chemicals, stands out as a significant source of water pollution. Exposure to certain textile dyes, such as azo dyes and their breakdown products like aromatic amines, has been associated with health concerns like skin sensitization, allergic reactions, and even cancer in humans. Annually, the worldwide production of synthetic dyes approximates 7 × 10 7 tons, of which the textile industry accounts for over 10,000 tons. Inefficient dyeing procedures result in the discharge of 15–50% of azo dyes, which do not adequately bind to fibers, into wastewater. This review delves into the genotoxic impact of azo dyes, prevalent in the textile industry, on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Examining different families of textile dye which contain azo group in their structure such as Sudan I and Sudan III Sudan IV, Basic Red 51, Basic Violet 14, Disperse Yellow 7, Congo Red, Acid Red 26, and Acid Blue 113 reveals their carcinogenic potential, which may affect both industrial workers and aquatic life. Genotoxic and carcinogenic characteristics, chromosomal abnormalities, induced physiological and neurobehavioral changes, and disruptions to spermatogenesis are evident, underscoring the harmful effects of these dyes. The review calls for comprehensive investigations into the toxic profile of azo dyes, providing essential insights to safeguard the aquatic ecosystem and human well-being. The importance of effective effluent treatment systems is underscored to mitigate adverse impacts on agricultural lands, water resources, and the environment, particularly in regions heavily reliant on wastewater irrigation for food production.

Abstract:Azo dyes are widely used in textile, paper and packing industries, and have become one of the research hot spots in dye wastewater treatment because of their carcinogenicity, teratogenic mutagenicity, stable structure and degradation difficulty. In this study, the biodecolorization of acid orange 7 (AO7), an azo dye, by different white rot fungi was investigated, and the effect of different conditions on the decolorization rate of the dye was analyzed. At the same time, the degradation liquor was analyzed and the phytotoxicity experiment was performed to deduce the possible degradation pathway of AO7 and assess the toxicity of its degradation products. The results showed that the decolorization rate reached 93.46% in 24 h at pH 4.5, 28 ℃ by Pleurotus eryngii and Trametes versicolor when AO7 concentration was 100 mg/L. The biodegradation pathway of AO7 was initiated by the cleavage of the azo bond of AO7, generating p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and 1-amino-2-naphthol. Subsequently, the sulfonic acid group of p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid was removed to generate hydroquinone. Moreover, the 1-amino-2-naphthol was de-ringed to generate phthalic acid and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and then further degraded into benzoic acid. Finally, hydroquinone and benzoic acid may be further oxidized into other small molecules, carbon dioxide and water. Phytotoxicity experiment showed that the toxicity of AO7 could be reduced by P. eryngii and T. versicolor.

Abstract:The use of dyes dates to ancient times and has increased due to population and industrial growth, leading to the rise of synthetic dyes. These pollutants are of great environmental impact and azo dyes deserve special attention due their widespread use and challenging degradation. Among the biological solutions developed to mitigate this issue, bacteria are highlighted for being versatile organisms, which can be applied as single organism cultures, microbial consortia, in bioreactors, acting in the detoxification of azo dyes breakage by-products and have the potential to combine biodegradation with the production of products of economic interest. These characteristics go hand in hand with the ability of various strains to act under various chemical and physical parameters, such as a wide range of pH, salinity, and temperature, with good performance under industry, and environmental, relevant conditions. This review encompasses studies with promising results related to the use of bacteria in the bioremediation of environments contaminated with azo dyes in the most diverse techniques and parameters, both in environmental and laboratory samples, also addressing their mechanisms and the legislation involving these dyes around the world, showcasing the importance of bacterial bioremediation, specialty in a scenario in an ever-increasing pursuit for sustainable production.

Abstract:Pre-operative blood requests are often greatly in excess of the number of units of blood actually transfused during elective surgical procedures. Such practices are costly in terms of laboratory manpower and leads to unnecessary wastage of blood due to outdating. Developing guidelines for the number of blood units to cross-match preoperatively for surgical procedures optimises the use of blood. This study reports on blood ordering patterns and offers guidelines on the maximum number of units of blood to order for some of the commoner surgical procedures. The use of a Type and Screen procedure is recommended for those operations where blood is regularly ordered but rarely used. Operative procedures listed under the Surgical Tables 1 and 2 and the Minor Surgical Procedure Table, Ministry of Health, Singapore, fall into this group.

Abstract:Dyes are synthetic organic compounds widely used in various industries such as, textile, leather, plastic, food, pharmaceutical, and paints manufacturing industries. Coloured effluents are highly toxic to the aquatic life and mutagenic to humans. Wastewater containing dyes has become an important issue demanding serious attention. Among the synthetic dyes, azo dyes are the largest and most widely used dyes and account for more than half of the annually produced dyes. The biodegradation of azo dyes is difficult due to their complex structure and synthetic nature. Several treatments have been proposed for efficient azo dye removal, most of them presenting some limitations such as generation of waste sludge, high operational costs, poor efficiency, and incomplete mineralization. Biological treatment is a cost-effective and eco-friendly process for dye degradation. Sequential anaerobic–aerobic biological treatment is considered as one of the most cost-effective methods for the complete mineralization of azo dyes. The anaerobic stage yields decolourization through reductive cleavage of the dye’s azo linkages, resulting in the formation of generally colourless but potentially hazardous aromatic amines. The aerobic stage involves degradation of the aromatic amines. It is the most logical step for removing the azo dyes from the wastewater. Several factors can influence the microbial activity and consequently the efficacy and effectiveness of the complete biodegradation processes. This paper summarizes the results of biological decolourization of azo dyes using various types of reactors, elaborates biochemical mechanisms involved, and discusses influence of various operational parameters on decolourization based on reports published in the last decade.

Abstract:Aquatic ecosystem conservation is imperative to reaching global biodiversity and sustainability targets. However, the ecological status of waters has been continuously eroded through mismanagement in the face of existing and emerging anthropogenic stressors, such as pollutants. There has been an emerging trend towards the use of dyes to manage algae and plants as well as to alter aesthetics within various aquatic environments. This artificial colouring has potential ecological implications through reductions in light levels and disruptions to thermoclines (i.e., temperature regime changes with depth). Abiotic regime shifts could in turn drive ecological cascades by depowering primary production, hampering top-down trophic interactions, and affecting evolved animal behaviours. Despite commercial dyes being marketed as acutely non-toxic, very little is known about the chronic effects of these dyes across ecological scales and contexts. We thus call for greater research efforts to understand the ecological consequences of dye usage in aquatic environments, as well as the socio-cultural drivers for its application. This emerging research area could harness approaches such as biological assays, community module experiments, remote sensing, culturomics, and social surveys to elucidate dye effects, trends, and perspectives under a pollution framework. A greater understanding of the potential effects of dye in aquatic ecosystems under relevant contexts would help to inform management decisions and regulation options, while helping to mediate ecocentric and anthropocentric perspectives.

Abstract:Textile dye is one of the main pollutants in industrial wastewater, and its impact on soil environment has always been an important part of soil health risk assessment. The objective is to reveal the succession law of microbial community in textile dye–contaminated soil, and to provide scientific basis for environmental assessment and remediation of textile dye–contaminated soil. High-throughput sequencing combined with bioinformatics analysis and LC–MS were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of soil-contaminated textile dyes. Soil microbial activity was characterized by enzyme activity, respiratory intensity, and culturable microorganism combing. The results showed that the bacterial community structure in soil was closely related to soil ecological environment. With the increase of textile dye concentration in soil, the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroides, and Gemobacteria increased, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Chlorobacteria, and Nitrospira decreased. At the genus level, there were significant differences in the relative abundance of bacterial communities in different contaminated soil samples. Textile dyes significantly reduced soil microbial activity, diversity, and richness of soil bacterial community, and changed the structure of soil bacterial community. The content of textile dyes in soil was highly correlated with the change of bacterial groups.

Abstract:Textile industry is one of the anthropogenic activities that consume a large amount of water and pollute water bodies. It uses a massive amount of dyes, which is one of the main constituents of polluting textile effluent. In the present research, biodegradation of Acid Blue 113 dye, a commonly used textile di-azo dye, has been studied exploiting <i>Pseudomonas stutzeri</i>, strain AK6. The dye (300 ppm) was decolorized up to 86.2% within 96 h. The metabolites of Acid Blue 113 obtained after biodegradation were identified by various analytical techniques viz. HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and GC–MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry). Genome analysis of isolate AK6 using IMG/M (Integrated Microbial Genomes and Microbiomes) system supported the role of azoreductase and laccase for the decolorization and degradation of azo dye. The ability of <i>P. stutzeri</i> AK6 to tolerate high amount of dye makes it a potential candidate for bioremediation and pre-processing to remove dyes from textile effluents.

Abstract:Textile industries utilize a variety of dyes and chemicals, resulting in wastewater that contains numerous hazardous components. The release of these dyes into aquatic systems poses a serious environmental and harms human health due to their persistence, recalcitrance, and nonbiodegradability. To address this, microbial bioremediation and nano‐photocatalysts are commonly employed for the effective removal of dyes and toxic compounds from textile effluents. This review explores the ecofriendly and efficient use of microbes, such as fungi, yeast, bacteria, and algae, in dye treatment, emphasizing their role in decolorization and degradation. Additionally, microbial remediation is highlighted as a clean, effective, and safe technology for detoxifying azo dyes in wastewater. The review also compares microbial and nanoparticle methods for dye removal from textile wastewater, examining the environmental impact of each approach. Furthermore, we have highlighted challenges and prospects for the development direction and future of this field.

Abstract:Textile industry effluent creates a negative impact to plants, animals and environment. The utilization of reactive azo dyes plays a colossal role in creating hazard to environment and water due to its toxic, carcinogenic and promote mutagenicity. The effective treatment of the effluent is mandatory to conserve nature and humans from critical risk. Microbial remediation is an eco-friendly method to degrade the dyes; specifically, bacterial consortium treatment is unique with reference to their mutual interaction. In this study, we have successfully developed an effective dye-decolourizing bacterial consortium and experimented to achieve the enhanced reactive dye decolourization in pilot scale. The culture characteristic factors influencing in bacterial consortium dye decolourization were further investigated and statistically optimised in response surface methodology (RSM) technique using central composite design (CCD) tool to maximize the decolourization process. Based on the antagonistic assay, the bacterial consortium design CD-3, consisting of Exiguobacterium aurantiacum TSL7, Bacillus firmus TSL9, and Brevibacillus laterosporus TS5 strains, demonstrated the highest RGY dye decolourization (83.78%) within 24 h. Bacterial consortium CD-3 productively decolourizes diverse dyes like magenta, yellow FG, and red (95%) in 24 h, followed by orange 3R (94%). The optimal concentration of selected factors for CD-3 dye decolourization is sodium chloride, yeast extract, initial dye concentration, inoculum size, and pH, which are 1.25%, 1.52%, 219 mg/l, 2.5%, and 6.5, respectively. The statistical analysis of tested factors, specifically dye concentration (carbon source), yeast extract (nitrogen source) and pH, has significant effects in process, and its mid-values have great influence in decolourizing results. Furthermore, the clear picture of the degraded non-toxic dye components was depicted by GC–MS result. Thus, the proposed biological treatment using bacterial consortium is effective one and can be used in the real world to address the pollution crisis.

Abstract:The presence of dye in wastewater causes substantial threats to the environment, and has negative impacts not only on human health but also on the health of other organisms that are part of the ecosystem. Because of the increase in textile manufacturing, the inhabitants of the area, along with other species, are subjected to the potentially hazardous consequences of wastewater discharge from textile and industrial manufacturing. Different types of dyes emanating from textile wastewater have adverse effects on the aquatic environment. Various methods including physical, chemical, and biological strategies are applied in order to reduce the amount of dye pollution in the environment. The development of economical, ecologically acceptable, and efficient strategies for treating dye-containing wastewater is necessary. It has been shown that microbial communities have significant potential for the remediation of hazardous dyes in an environmentally friendly manner. In order to improve the efficacy of dye remediation, numerous cutting-edge strategies, including those based on nanotechnology, microbial biosorbents, bioreactor technology, microbial fuel cells, and genetic engineering, have been utilized. This article addresses the latest developments in physical, chemical, eco-friendly biological and advanced strategies for the efficient mitigation of dye pollution in the environment, along with the related challenges.

Abstract:Textile industry consumes a large proportion of available water and releases huge amounts of toxic azo dye effluents, leading to an inevitable situation of acute environmental pollution that has been a significant threat to mankind. Decolorization or detoxification of harmful azo dyes has become a global priority to overcome the disastrous consequences and salvage the ecosystem. Biodegradation of textile azo dyes by endophytes stands to be a lucrative and viable alternative over conventional physico-chemical methods, owing to their eco-friendliness, cost-competitive and non-toxic nature. Especially, plant endophytic microbes exhibit promising biodegradation potential which has wired up the effective removal of textile azo dyes, attributing to their ability to produce dye degrading enzymes, laccases, peroxidases and azoreductases. Although both bacterial and fungal endophytes have been tried for azo dye degradation, endophytic fungi find broader application over bacteria. Despite of the advancements made in microbe-mediated biodegradation, there is still a need to fill the gap in lab to in situ translation of biodegradation research. This review concisely accentuates the xenobiotics of textile azo dyes and microbial mechanisms of biodegradation of textile azo dyes, positing plant endophytic community, especially bacterial and fungal endophytes as the potential dye degraders, highlighting currently reported dye degrading endophytic species.

Abstract:Environmental contamination brought on by the discharge of wastewater from textile industries is a growing concern on a global scale. Textile industries produce a huge quantity of effluents containing a myriad of chemicals, mostly dyes. The discharge of such effluents into the aquatic environment results in pollution that adversely affects aquatic organisms. Synthetic dyes are complex aromatic chemical structures with carcinogenic and mutagenic properties in addition to high biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). This complex aromatic structure resists degradation by conventional techniques. The bioremediation approach is the biological clean-up of toxic contaminants from industrial effluents. Biological treatment methods produce less or no sludge and are cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly. Microorganisms, mostly microalgae and bacteria, and, in some instances, fungi, yeast, and enzymes decolorize textile dye compounds into simple, non-toxic chemical compounds. Following a thorough review of the literature, we are persuaded that microalgae and bacteria might be one of the potential decolorizing agents substituting for most other biological organisms in wastewater treatment. This article presents extensive literature information on textile dyes, their classification, the toxicity of dyes, and the bioremediation of toxic textile industry effluent utilizing microalgae and bacteria. Additionally, it combines data on factors influencing textile dye bioremediation, and a few suggestions for future research are proposed.

Abstract:A strong economic foundation can be achieved by the growth of a number of businesses, including food, paper, clothes, leather, and textiles. However, because of improper waste management, industrialization and modernization have resulted in the massive disposal of water effluent laden with harmful substances like dyes and heavy metals, which has negatively impacted the ecosystem. A new green technology called myco-remediation has emerged to battle harmful toxins while promoting sustainable development effectively and economically. This review employed enzymatic degradation, biosorption, and their influencing parameters for optimization in order to highlight the invaluable potential of fungal bioremediation for dye degradation. Current perspectives on enzyme immobilization techniques and kinetic studies of dye removal have been reviewed, which can aid in the selection of quick and effective removal processes. This research offers new insight into a criterion that is often overlooked in favor of dye decolorization efficiency: the toxicity assessment of pure dye and post-process metabolites produced following myco-remediation. Our attention has been directed towards toxicity analysis at many levels, including genotoxicity, phytotoxicity, and zoo-toxicity. This is important to keep in mind when considering the extensive implications of myco-remediation for the recycling and reuse of industrial effluent. Enzyme engineering and omics technologies have been highlighted as potential future developments.
