Abstract:By the year 2050, the population of the United States is expected to reach over 418 million, while the global population will reach 9.6 billion. To provide safe food and fiber, agriculture must balance pesticide usage against impacts on natural resources. Challenges arise when storms cause runoff to be transported to aquatic receiving systems. Vegetated systems such as drainage ditches and constructed wetlands have been proposed as management practices to alleviate pesticide runoff. Twelve experimental mesocosms (1.3×0.71×0.61m) were filled with sediment and planted with a monoculture of one of three wetland plant species (Typha latifolia, Leersia oryzoides, and Sparganium americanum). Three mesocosms remained unvegetated to serve as controls. All mesocosms were amended with 9.2±0.8μg/L, 12±0.4μg/L, and 3.1±0.2μg/L of atrazine, metolachlor, and diazinon, respectively, over a 4hr hydraulic retention time to simulate storm runoff. Following the 4hr amendment, non-amended water was flushed through mesocosms for an additional 4hr. Outflow water samples were taken hourly from pre-amendment through 8hr, and again at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 168hr post-amendment. L. oryzoides and T. latifolia had mean atrazine, metolachlor, and diazinon retentions from 51%-55% for the first 4hr of the experiment. Aside from S. americanum and atrazine (25% retention), unvegetated controls had the lowest pesticide retention (17%-28%) of all compared mesocosms. While native aquatic vegetation shows promise for mitigation of pesticide runoff, further studies increasing the hydraulic retention time for improved efficiency should be examined.
Negative Effects of Butachlor on the Growth and Physiology of Four Aquatic Plants

Abstract:The increasing use of herbicides in intelligent agricultural production is driven by the time-consuming nature of manual weeding, as well as its ephemeral effectiveness. However, herbicides like butachlor degrade slowly and can be washed away by rainwater, ultimately flowing into the farm ponds and posing risks to aquatic plants. To identify and recommend superior restoration strategies that effectively address the challenges posed by butachlor, we investigated the impacts of butachlor on the growth and physiology of four common aquatic plants (i.e., Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton maackianus, and Myriophyllum aquaticum) and their potential role in mitigating environmental damage by reducing residual herbicide levels. Our findings indicated that M. aquaticum was tolerant to butachlor, exhibiting higher growth rates than other species when exposed to various butachlor concentrations. However, the concentration of butachlor negatively impacted the growth of H. verticillata, C. demersum, and P. maackianus, with higher concentrations leading to more significant inhibitory effects. After a 15-day experimental period, aquatic plants reduced the butachlor residuals in culture mediums across concentrations of 0.5 mg/L, 1 mg/L, and 2 mg/L compared to non-plant controls. Our findings classified P. maackianus as butachlor-sensitive and M. aquaticum as butachlor-tolerant species. This investigation represents novel research aimed at elucidating the contrasting effects of different concentrations of butachlor on four common aquatic species in the agricultural multi-pond system.

Abstract:Plant-specific root-microbe-soil interactions play an indisputable role in microbial adaptation to environmental stresses. However, the assembly of plant rhizosphere microbiomes and their feedbacks in modification of pollution alleviation under organochlorine stress condition is far less clear. This study examined the response of root-associated bacterial microbiomes to lindane pollution and compared the dissipation of lindane in maize-cultivated dry soils and rice-cultivated flooded soils. Results showed that lindane pollution dramatically altered the microbial structure in the rhizosphere soil of maize but had less influence on the microbial composition in flooded treatments regardless of rice growth, when the reductive dechlorination of lindane was actively coupled with natural redox processes under anaerobic conditions. After 30 days of plant growth, lindane residues dissipated much faster in anaerobic than in aerobic environments, with only 1.08 mg kg(-1) lindane remaining in flooded control compared to 12.79 mg kg(-1) in dry control soils. Compared to the corresponding unplanted control, maize growth significantly increased, but rice growth slightly decreased the dissipation of lindane. Our study suggests that opposite impacts would lead to the self-purification of polluted soils during the growth of xerophytic maize and hygrocolous rice. This was attributed to the contrasting belowground micro-ecological processes regarding protection of root tissues and thereby assembly of rhizosphere microbiomes shaped by the xerophytic and hygrocolous crops under different water managements, in response to lindane pollution. Effects of select herbicides for management of American lotus, white waterlily, and watershield

Abstract:Literature describing effective control measures for the floating-leaved plants American lotus (Nelumbo lutea Willd.), white waterlily (Nymphaea odorata Aiton), and watershield (Brasenia schreberi J.F. Gmel.) is minimal as these are usually considered as desirable species. However, floating-leaved plants can cause ecological, economic, and social problems when undergoing demographic expansions, usually following alterations of natural hydrologic cycles. Therefore, a mesocosm trial was conducted to determine the potential of foliar applications of seven aquatic herbicides to reduce abundance of the three target species at maximum and half-maximum label rates. Three of the herbicides (glyphosate, imazamox, and florpyrauxifen-benzyl) provided short- and long-term suppression (.75% reduction) of white waterlily and watershield leaf density or biomass. As a followup trial, field work was conducted using glyphosate, imazamox, and florpyrauxifen-benzyl to determine plant response to these herbicides in a natural setting. All herbicides resulted in long-term (52 wk after treatment) leaf density reduction of white waterlily (64 to 100% reduction) and watershield (46 to 75% reduction; except 2.83 kg ae ha 1 glyphosate) in field sites while the abundance of American lotus increased. Reduction of white waterlily and watershield may have reduced competition thereby favoring higher abundance of lotus. Regardless, long-term (52-wk) reduction of white waterlily and watershield suggest the potential for these herbicides as operational management tools for nuisance populations of these species. Future work should evaluate chemical techniques for control of American lotus, where both timing of leaf emergence and potential interactions with other plant species must be considered in the design of those studies.

Abstract:Abstract Worldwide, conventional agriculture makes extensive use of pesticides. Although the effects of herbicides are relatively well known in terms of environmental impacts on non-target organisms, there is very little scientific evidence regarding the impacts of herbicide residues on aquatic arthropods from tropical conservation areas. This study evaluates for the first time the toxicity of the herbicides ametryn, atrazine, and clomazone on the aquatic insect Limnocoris submontandoni (Hemiptera: Naucoridae). The lethal concentration (LC50) of herbicides was evaluated for these insects, as well as the effect of the herbicides on the insects’ tissues and testicles. The estimated LC50 was 1012.41, 192.42, and 46.09 mg/L for clomazone, atrazine, and ametryn, respectively. Spermatocyte and spermatid changes were observed under the effect of atrazine, and effects on spermatogenesis were observed for some concentrations of clomazone, with apparent recovery after a short time. Our results provide useful information on the effects of herbicide residues in aquatic systems. This information can help minimize the risk of long-term reproductive effects in non-target species that have been previously overlooked in ecotoxicology studies.

Water and sediment quality of an agro-industrial area through different approaches: Physicochemical parameters and ecotoxicity with amphibians

Abstract:Amphibians are subject to several stressors in the aquatic and terrestrial environments, and human activities have profoundly impacted this vertebrate group. The aim of the present study was to analyze physicochemical parameters, metals and pesticide residues, and the toxicity of water and sediment samples from an environment with high agricultural activity (S1: Salto stream; S2: drainage channel downstream from S1) by means of bioassays using Rhinella arenarum (Amphibia: Anura) larvae. Metals and pesticides were analyzed in water and sediment samples by fluorescence spectrometer of X-ray by total reflection and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS, respectively. For lethality bioassays, 10 larvae (in triplicate) were exposed for 504 h to water and sediment samples. Also, 50 larvae were exposed for 96 h (in triplicate) to water and sediment samples for the evaluation of biomarkers of neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, and genotoxicity. Twenty-six different pesticides (mainly herbicides) were detected in both sites, and Cu, Zn, and Pb exceeded the limit for protection of aquatic life. Lethality was observed in larvae exposed to water and sediment samples from both sites at chronic exposure. Oxidative stress was observed in larvae exposed to both sites. In larvae exposed to samples from S1, alterations in the neurotoxicity biomarkers were observed. These results alert about the degradation of the sites and highlight the need to monitor and control the use of pesticides. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Twenty-six pesticides were detected in water and sediment from Salto stream basin. Significant mortality was observed in larvae exposed to samples from all sites. Sublethal effects were observed mainly in larvae exposed to samples from Salto stream. The degraded quality can be associated with the agricultural activities of the area.

Abstract:Water fern(Azolla filiculoides lam.) has been assessed for nitrogen and phosphorus removal from surface water at different P levels during low temperature season.The results showed that the plants had a good capability to remove NH+4-N,NO-3-N,and P from water at different phosphorus levels.At the end of experiment(grown for 16 days),the removal rates of NH+4-N,NO3-N were above 94.04% and 95.46%,respectively.The removal rates of different P varied with initial P pollution levels,and reached by 87.00%,96.75%,and 99.00% for initial P levels of 0.1,0.4 and 1.6 mg P/L,respectively.Plant growth increased with increasing P pollution levels in the water body.Plant dry matter yield,total N,and total P concentrations in the plant increased with increasing of P levels in the waters.The results showed that Azolla filiculoides can be a good candidate for phytoremediation of eutrophicated surface water.
Evaluation of the Aquatic Toxicity of Several Triazole Fungicides

Abstract:Fungicides play an important role in crop protection, but they have also been shown to adversely affect non-target organisms, including those living in the aquatic environment. The aim of the present study is to combine experimental and computational approaches to evaluate the effects of flutriafol, metconazole, myclobutanil, tebuconazole, tetraconazole and triticonazole on aquatic model organisms and to obtain information on the effects of these fungicides on Lemna minor, a freshwater plant, at the molecular level. The EC50 (the half-maximum effective concentration) values for the growth inhibition of Lemna minor in the presence of the investigated fungicides show that metconazole (EC50 = 0.132 mg/L) and tetraconazole (EC50 = 0.539 mg/L) are highly toxic, tebuconazole (EC50 = 1.552 mg/L), flutriafol (EC50 = 3.428 mg/L) and myclobutanil (EC50 = 9.134 mg/L) are moderately toxic, and triticonazole (EC50 = 11.631 mg/L) is slightly toxic to this plant. The results obtained with the computational tools TEST, ADMETLab2.0 and admetSAR2.0 also show that metconazole and tetraconazole are toxic to other aquatic organisms: Pimephales promelas, Daphnia magna and Tetrahymena pyriformis. A molecular docking study shows that triazole fungicides can affect photosynthesis in Lemna minor because they strongly bind to C43 (binding energies between −7.44 kcal/mol and −7.99 kcal/mol) and C47 proteins (binding energies between −7.44 kcal/mol and −8.28 kcal/mol) in the reaction center of photosystem II, inhibiting the binding of chlorophyll a to these enzymes. In addition, they can also inhibit glutathione S-transferase, an enzyme involved in the cellular detoxification of Lemna minor.

Abstract:After application, pesticides remained in the field may contaminate water resources through surface runoff and leaching, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystem. In the current study, the accumulation, translocation, distribution and removal of four triazine pesticides (simazine, atrazine, terbuthylazine and metribuzin) by free floating aquatic plant Eichhornia crassipes (E. crassipes) in water-sediment microcosm were investigated and the removal mechanisms were explored. E. crassipes was exposed to an initial concentration of 50 μg·L−1 and the pesticide levels in water, sediment, roots and shoots of E. crassipes were monitored during 30 days. The results demonstrated that E. crassipes was capable of accumulating triazine pesticides with the bio-concentration factor (BCF) ranging from 0.8 to 18.4. Triazine pesticides were mainly stored in roots, and root accumulation and translocation amount depend on the hydrophobicity of the pesticides. The removal of the pesticides in water were significantly accelerated by the presence of E. crassipes, with the removal efficiency ranging from 66% to 79% after 30 days of treatment. Though phytoaccumulation only constituted 2–18% of the total spiked pesticides in the microcosm, E. crassipes played a vital role in removing simazine, atrazine and metribuzin. However, microbial degradation in sediment was the main pathway for the removal of terbuthylazine in the microcosm. This study demonstrated the potential application of E. crassipes to accelerate removal of contaminants from aquatic environment.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of herbicides impact non-target species at multiple sublethal endpoints

Abstract:There is concern over herbicide exposure effects on aquatic primary production and zooplankton as herbicides are found in aquatic ecosystems at concentrations potentially toxic to phytoplankton. We first aimed to determine the effect concentrations (growth inhibition) and mixture interactions of the herbicides diuron (0.5 to 50μg/L) and hexazinone (0.5 to 40μg/L) on the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. Secondly, we evaluated chronic effects on Daphnia magna that were periodically fed on P. subcapitata that had been exposed to low, medium, and high concentrations. We hypothesized that based on the mode of action of the herbicides we would observe additive growth inhibition in algae, and sublethal effects on D. magna. Growth inhibition in P. subcapitata following mixture exposure was most consistent with the concentration addition (CA) concept; while the independent action (IA) model underestimated the combined effect. The lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC) were 1.50μg/L hexazinone, 1.18μg/L diuron, and 0.125 TU (0.30μg/L diuron×0.12μg/L hexazinone) in the single and binary mixture exposures, respectively. High hexazinone exposure decreased D. magna survival (80% vs. 55.6%). Neonate number was reduced by 13.9% in high mixture and 23.5% in high hexazinone treatments. Gravid body length was reduced by 9.5% following exposure to the high mixture. Herbicide exposure decreased neonate size, especially in later broods. Herbicides decreased the phototaxic responses of neonates in most treatments. Herbicide exposure effects were detected at environmentally relevant concentrations, levels considered to be safe according to current USEPA aquatic life benchmarks, suggesting that these benchmarks need to be updated to improve ecological risk assessment. As herbicides are some of the most applied pesticides worldwide, sublethal endpoints can serve as sensitive early warning tools to indicate their presence and can support regulatory assessments and monitoring to protect aquatic life.
Assessing ecological responses of exposure to the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin in sub-tropical freshwater ecosystems

Abstract:Pyrethroid insecticides are widely detected in aquatic ecosystems due to their extensive use in agriculture and horticulture, which could pose a potential risk to aquatic non-target organisms. While previous ecotoxicological studies have been conducted mainly with standard tests and local species under temperate conditions, scarce information is available on the effects of pyrethroid insecticides on communities and ecosystems under (sub-)tropical conditions. A single application of lambda-cyhalothrin at concentrations of 0, 9, 30, and 100 ng/L was evaluated in outdoor mesocosms under sub-tropical conditions. Lambda-cyhalothrin was found to dissipate rapidly in the water column, with only 11 % and 7 % of the remaining dose measured at 1 and 3 days after application, respectively. Lambda-cyhalothrin concentrations disappeared considerably faster from the water compartment compared to temperate conditions. Consistent decreases in abundance were observed for Lecane lunaris at the medium and higher treatments (NOEC = 9 ng/L) and at the highest treatment (NOEC = 30 ng/L) for Keratella tropica. On the contrary, two taxa belonging to Cladocera (i.e., Ceriodaphnia sp. and Diaphanosoma sp.) showed the most prominent increase in abundance related to the lambda-cyhalothrin treatments. At the community level, a consistent no observed effect concentrations (NOECs) of 9 ng/L could be calculated for the zooplankton community. A marginal significant overall treatment related effect was observed for the macroinvertebrate community. The results of species sensitivity distribution (SSD) analysis based on results of acute toxicity experiments conducted alongside the mesocosm experiment and obtained from the literature indicated that macroinvertebrates from temperate regions may be generally more sensitive than their counterparts in (sub-)tropical regions. Overall, these findings suggest that environmentally relevant concentrations of the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin may lead to different ecological outcomes in freshwater ecosystems in the (sub-)tropics relative to temperate regions.

Abstract:Atrazine and Diuron are widely used herbicides. The use of pesticides contaminates the aquatic environment, threatening biodiversity and non-target organisms such as fish. In this study, we investigated the effects of acute exposure for 96 h hours to atrazine and diuron commercial formulations in zebrafish (Danio rerio, wild-type AB) embryos and larvae and adult stages. We observed a significant concentration-dependent survival decrease and hatching delays in animals exposed to both herbicides and in the frequency of malformations compared to the control groups. Morphological defects included cardiac edema, tail reduction, and head malformation. At 7 days post-fertilization (dpf), atrazine exposure resulted in a reduction in the head length at 2, 2.5, and 5 mg/L and increased the ocular distance at 1, 2, 2.5, and 5 mg/L atrazine when compared to controls. At the same age, diuron increased the ocular distance in animals exposed to diuron (1.0 and 1.5 mg/L) and no effects were observed on the head length. We also evaluated a behavioral repertoire in larvae at 7 dpf, and there were no significant differences in distance traveled, mean speed, time in movement, and thigmotaxis for atrazine and diuron when animals were individually placed in a new environment. The cognitive ability of the larvae was tested at 7 dpf for avoidance and optomotor responses, and neither atrazine nor diuron had significant impacts when treated groups were compared to their corresponding controls. Adults' behavior was evaluated 7 and 8 days after the end of the acute herbicide exposure. Exploration of a new environment and associated anxiety-like parameters, social interaction, and aggressiveness were not altered. Our results highlight the need for further studies on the sublethal effects of both herbicides and the consideration of the effects of commercial formulas vs. isolated active ingredients. It also emphasizes the need to take sublethal effects into consideration when establishing the environmental limits of residues.
Screening potential toxicity of currently used herbicides in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum based on multi-level biomarker responses to field-realistic exposures

Abstract:Herbicides are widely used to control weeds and maximize crop growth. Because of agricultural runoff, these chemicals are potentially hazardous to aquatic wildlife. However, their ecotoxicity and resulting disturbance in individual performance remain scarcely documented in freshwater crustaceans. This study aimed to screen the potential toxicity of currently used herbicides in the ecosystem engineer Gammarus fossarum using multi-level biomarkers. In microcosms, gammarids were exposed for 72 h to 12 herbicides individually (quinmerac, mesotrione, bentazone, isoproturon, chlortoluron, metazachlor, chloridazone, diflufenican, flufenacet, aclonifen, prosulfocarb and metolachlor) at a field-realistic concentration (i.e. 10 μg/L). The sublethal effects were assessed by monitoring several biochemical, physiological and behavioural traits. In exposed gammarids, alterations in behavioural activities were observed, i.e. increased locomotion and respiration as a general trend. Moreover, biochemical biomarkers suggested herbicide-dependent disruptions in moulting, antioxidant responses and cell integrity. Integrating multi-metric variations through statistical analyses allowed us to identify herbicide clusters likely to trigger common sets of biological responses. Depressed antioxidant defence at the cell level and impaired respiration at the individual level were the predominant toxic effects of herbicides, related to their hydrophobic feature. Furthermore, establishing relationships between sublethal alterations in gammarids and acute lethality or chronic toxicity values defined for regulatory purposes supports the relevance of these alterations as early warnings of toxicity. Our findings demonstrate that currently used herbicides have unexpected toxicological effects in a non-target wild animal, with possible long-term alterations in population dynamics and associated ecological functions, which constitute promising diagnostic tools for risk assessment in agricultural areas.

Abstract:The phytotoxicity and removal of atrazine and S -metolachlor in sterile duckweed systems were estimated in this study. Herbicides were added at environmentally relevant ranges: 0–400 μg/L for atrazine or 0–200 μg/L for S -metolachlor in systems with Spirodela polyrhiza or Lemna minor . Toxicity biomarkers, i.e., changes in plant biomass, surface area, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, pigments, lipid peroxidation, protein concentration, and antioxidative enzyme activities in plants were estimated after 7 days. S. polyrhiza (RGR biomass -EC 50 = 164.8 μg/L) was more tolerant to atrazine than L. minor (RGR biomass -EC 50 = 101.0 μg/L). Atrazine caused damage to photosystem II ( Φ M ), a reduction in electron transport between PSII and PSI ( Φ ′ M ), as well as disruption in energy distribution pathways (decrease in qPrel and increase in UQFrel), most prominently in L. minor . However, L. minor (RGR biomass -EC 50 = 128.9 μg/L) was more tolerant to S -metolachlor than S. polyrhiza (RGR biomass -EC 50 = 15.5 μg/L). The highest sensitivity of S. polyrhiza to S -metolachlor was attributed to a decrease in absorbed energy used in photochemistry (qPrel) and an increase in lipid peroxidation, indicating that S. polyrhiza plants were experiencing oxidative stress. Residual pesticide analysis in the water after seven days allowed us to conclude that plants were responsible for reducing up to 16.5% of atrazine and 28.7% of S -metolachlor in the duckweed system. S. polyrhiza showed higher atrazine phytoremediation capacity than L. minor. S. polyrhiza was more efficient at an environmentally relevant concentration of S -metolachlor (25 μg/L) and L. minor at higher concentrations (200 μg/L).

Abstract:To evaluate the aquatic hazards of the insect juvenile hormone analogue fenoxycarb, a single application (0, 48.8, 156.3, 500, 1600, and 5120 mu g/L) of it was done in indoor freshwater systems dominated by Daphnia carinata (daphnid) and Dolerocypris sinensis (ostracoda). The responses of zooplankton (counted by abundance and the activity and immuno-reactive content of free N-Acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase)), phytoplankton (counted by chlorophyll and phycocyanin), planktonic bacteria and fungi, and some water quality parameters were investigated in a period of 35 d. Results of the study showed that the ostracoda was more sensitive than daphnid, with time-weighted average (TWA)-based no observed effect concentrations (NOECs) to be 8.45 and 12.66 mu g/L in systems without humic acid addition (HA-) and to be 6.37 and 9.54 mu g/L in systems with humic acid addition (HA+). The duration of treatment-related effects in the ostracoda population was longer than the daphnid population (21 vs. 14 days). Besides, the data analysis indicated that the toxicity of fenoxycarb was significantly enhanced in the HA+ systems. Owing to the reduced grazing pressure, the concentrations of chlorophyll and phycocyanin increased in the two highest treatments. The increase in photosynthesis along with a reduced animal excretion led to an increase in pH and a decrease in nutrient contents. These changes seemed to have an effect on the microbial communities. For example, the abundances of some opportunistic pathogens of aquatic animals (e.g. Aeromonas and Cladosporium) and organic-pollutant-degrading microorganisms (e.g. Ancylobacter and Azospirillum) increased significantly in microbial communities, but the abundances of Pedobacter, Candidatus Planktoluna, and Rhodobacter (photosynthetic bacteria) markedly decreased. This study provides useful information to understand the ecotoxicological impacts of fenoxycarb at the population and community levels while integrating the effects of HA on toxicity.

Abstract:Freshwater eutrophication is an increasing ecological and public health concern. One of the major consequences of eutrophication is the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs), a rapid population increase and accumulation of microorganisms, namely algae and cyanobacteria. In this project, we aim to investigate a nature based solution to this environmental hazard. Our approach consisted in the evaluation of the potential of aquatic plants to control the growth and viability of Chrysosporum ovalisporum, a cyanobacteria species associated with HABs and that produces toxic metabolites such as cylindrospermopsin. First, we carried out a screening with different plant species – Iris pseudacoros , Typha latifolia , Sparganium erectum , Alisma plantago-aquatica , Alisma lanceolatum , Nasturtium officinale , Landoltia punctata , Lemna minor and Wolffia arrhiza – for the allelopathic effect of their extracts on this cyanobacteria. For this purpose, methanol/water (70:30, v:v) mixture extracts were prepared and tested, at various concentrations, in C. ovalisporum cultures. Exposure to L. punctata extracts at the highest concentration tested (2 mg L −1 ) showed significant cellular abundance inhibitory effects on C. ovalisporum . Secondly, a microcosm system was assembled to evaluate the effects of co-growth of C. ovalisporum and L. punctata . In this experiment, we tested the effect of the presence of this plant on C. ovalisporum cell abundance, under a nutritional surplus and equivalent cyanobacterial light exposure in between test and control groups. The results confirmed the allelopathic effect of L. punctata on C. ovalisporum . This work demonstrates that the allelopathic properties of aquatic plants could be exploited to control the growth of harmful algae, and could be used to develop novel, eco-friendly and practical solutions, for treatment of water contaminated with C. ovalisporum .

Abstract:Agriculture is fundamental for human development, but it may also have a range of unwanted effects on ecosystems when pesticides inadvertently enter the environment. We determined the toxicity of difenoconazole and atrazine, as well as their photodegradation products, on the bioindicators Lemna minor and Daphnia magna. For L. minor, we assessed the number of leaves, biomass, and chlorophyll content exposed to different concentrations of difenoconazole (0-8 mg/L) and atrazine (0-3.84 mg/L). For D. magna, we assessed the mortality to difenoconazole (0-1.6 mg/L) and atrazine (0-80 mg/L). We found that the higher the concentrations of the pesticides, the higher the toxicity for both bioindicators. In L. minor, the highest toxicity for atrazine was 0.96 mg/L, whereas for difenoconazole, it was 8 mg/L. For D. magna, the 48 h LC50 for difenoconazole was 0.97 mg/L, while for atrazine, it was 86.19 mg/L. For L. minor, the toxicity of difenoconazole and atrazine was not different compared to that of their photodegradation products. In contrast, for D. magna, difenoconazole, but not atrazine, was more toxic compared to its respective photodegradation products. Pesticides are a serious threat to aquatic biota, and their photodegradation products remain toxic in the environment. Additionally, the use of bioindicators can help monitor these pollutants in aquatic ecosystems in countries where the application of pesticides is imperative for agricultural production.

Abstract:Excessively used pesticides in agricultural areas are spilled into aquatic environments, wherein they are suspended or sedimented. Owing to climate change, herbicides are the fastest growing sector of the pesticide industry and are detected in surface water, groundwater, and sediments near agricultural areas. In freshwater, organisms, including mussels, snails, frogs, and fish, are exposed to various types and concentrations of herbicides. Invertebrates are sensitive to herbicide exposure because their defense systems are incomplete. At the top of the food chain in freshwater ecosystems, fish show high bioaccumulation of herbicides. Herbicide exposure causes reproductive toxicity and population declines in freshwater organisms and further contamination of fish used for consumption poses a risk to human health. In addition, it is important to understand how environmental factors are physiologically processed and assess their impacts on reproductive parameters, such as gonadosomatic index and steroid hormone levels. Zebrafish is a good model for examining the effects of herbicides such as atrazine and glyphosate on embryonic development in freshwater fish. This review describes the occurrence and role of herbicides in freshwater environments and their potential implications for the reproduction and embryonic development of freshwater organisms.
Sediment remediation using submerged plants mitigated the bioaccumulation of organic contaminants in benthic organisms in simulated freshwater aquaculture ponds

Abstract:Few studies have investigated whether growing submerged plants can provide significant mitigation of both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and antibiotics (ATBs) in sediments and cultured aquaculture products. In this study, Corbicula fluminea was selected as the indicator organism in the laboratory simulation experiment, and four remediation systems using Vallisneria natans L. (VN), Hydrilla verticillate L. (HV), Elodea nuttallii P. (EL) and Control Check (CK) were constructed individually. The accumulated concentrations (Cb) and changes in both bioavailability (Cfree) and bulk burden (Cs) of 16 PAHs and four ATBs were analyzed before, during, and after the experiment. Compared with the CK group, the introduction of VN, HV, and EL reduced: Cb of ΣPAHs by 43%, 32%, and 27%, respectively; ΣATBs by 68%, 49%, and 39%, respectively, in Corbicula fluminea; the corresponding cancer risk of ΣPAHs by 19%, 8.9%, and 13%, respectively; and the target hazard quotients of ΣATBs by 73%, 48%, and 41%, respectively. The freely dissolved concentrations of ΣPAHs and ΣATBs (Cfree) in the experimental groups decreased by 38%− 58% and 37%− 70%, respectively. More ATBs than PAHs were reduced in biota, with VN showing the highest efficiency. Reduction in Cfree was more related to reduction in Cb than reduction in Cs. In terms of Cb reduction, Cfree was more indicative for ATBs than PAHs. Analyses of the bacterial community revealed that the introduction of submerged plants significantly increased the abundance of Sphingomonas and Mycobacterium, with specific degradation effects observed for high molecular weight PAHs in the sediment.
