Abstract:Biogenic nanoparticle production is in demand as it is secure, has great promise, and is environmental friendly. This study aimed at green synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of Terminalia arjuna selenium nanoparticles (TA-SeNPs) for their antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer activities, and their incorporation in gel for biomedical applications. The bio-reduction attributes of the T. arjuna (TA) bark extract were utilized to fabricate selenium nanoparticles. The TA bark extract is abundant in phenolics (193.63 ± 1.61 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), flavonoids (88.23 ± 0.39 mg quercetin equivalents/g), and tannins (109.46 ± 1.16 mg catechin equivalents/g), which perform as effective capping and stabilizing agents, thus enabling the fabrication of stable SeNPs. The fabrication of TA-SeNPs was corroborated by UV–visible spectra, which exhibited surface plasmon resonance at 291 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated nano-sized spherical TA-SeNPs with an average diameter ranging from 100 to 150 nm. Zeta potential analysis revealed that TA-SeNPs were negatively charged (−26.1 mV). X-ray diffraction presented amorphous TA-SeNPs with a quantification of 82.36 ± 10.2 μg/mL resulting from ICP-AES. The IC 50 45.18 ± 0.11 μg/mL for the DPPH assay and 66.51% reducing power capacity values indicated that the TA-SeNPs possessed excellent radical scavenging efficacy. Moreover, the TA-SeNPs exhibited a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against potential pathogens. Additionally, the TA-SeNPs exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line, with an IC 50 of 23.41 μg/mL. Furthermore, the TA-SeNP-incorporated gel showed excellent spreadability, extrudability, and consistency with retention of antimicrobial properties and hydrophilic contact angle. As an outcome, TA-SeNPs offer the possibility of the formulation and growth of sustainably designed green SeNPs that can be produced, conserved, and marketed securely across the globe.

Abstract:Abstract: ‘Green’ methodologies have become the main route for producing selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), as they do not involve toxic substances that can increase the reactivity of the synthesized nanoparticles and are practical and inexpensive. Extracts from plants, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, ascorbic acid, and polysaccharides are used to produce these nanoparticles. Plant extracts contain phytochemicals that act as reducing and stabilizing agents, while bacteria, fungi, and yeasts can synthesize SeNPs from metabolites secreted during their development or via intracellular mechanisms. Ascorbic acid is also an excellent agent for reducing precursor metal salts, and polysaccharides act as stabilizing agents for the synthesized nanoparticles. The SeNPs synthesized by these routes have desirable characteristics for clinical applications since they are safe, non-toxic, and stable, with high biocompatibility and bioavailability. In addition, they have antimicrobial, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-mosquito, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities, as revealed by both in vitro and in vivo studies.

Abstract:Here, we report for the first time, green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using pharmacologically potent herb of Polygonum bistorta Linn. for multiple biomedical applications. In the study, a facile and an eco-friendly approach is utilized for synthesis of SeNPs using an aqueous roots extract of P. bistorta Linn . followed by extensive characterization via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analysis. The XRD and FTIR data determine the phase composition and successful capping of plant extract onto the surface of NPs while SEM and TEM micrographic examination reveals the elliptical and spherical morphology of the particles with a mean size of 69 ± 23 nm. After comprehensive characterization, the NPs are investigated for antifungal, antibacterial, antileishmanial, antioxidant, and biocompatibility properties. The study reveals that Polygonum bistorta Linn. synthesized SeNPs exhibit significant antibacterial and antifungal activities with Staphylococcus aureus and Fusarium oxysporum inducing the highest zone of inhibition of 14 ± 1.0 mm and 20 ± 1.2 mm, respectively at the concentration of 40 mg/mL. The NPs are also found to have antiparasitic potential against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania tropica . Furthermore, the NPs are discovered to have excellent potential in neutralizing harmful free radicals thus exhibiting considerable antioxidant potential. Most importantly, Polygonum bistorta Linn . synthesized SeNPs showed substantial compatibility against blood cells in vitro studies, which signifies the nontoxic nature of the NPs. The study thus concludes that medicinally important Polygonum bistorta Linn . roots can be utilized as an eco-friendly, sustainable, and green source for the synthesis of pharmacologically potent selenium nanoparticles.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are extremely popular objects in nanotechnology. “Green” synthesis has special advantages due to the growing necessity for environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and low-cost methods. This review considers the biosynthesis mechanism of bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants, including the role of various biological substances in the processes of reducing selenium compounds to SeNPs and their further packaging. Modern information and approaches to the possible biomedical use of selenium nanoparticles are presented: antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other properties, as well as the mechanisms of these processes, that have important potential therapeutic value.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials are advantageous within numerous fields of medicine owing to their intriguing qualities, which include their size, reactive surface, bioactivity, potential for modification, and optical characteristics. Cassia javanica flower extract was used as a chelating agent in an environmentally friendly process to create SeNPs FTIR, XRD, and TEM, SAED were utilized to analyze and characterize the synthesized. The findings showed that the MIC of Se NPs against B. subtilis and S. aureus was 500 μg/ml. Conversely, the MIC for P. aeruginosa , E. coli , and C. albicans were 125, 250, and 62.5 μg/ml, respectively. Hence, SeNPs considerably reduced the activity; the inhibition peaked at 77.6% at 250 μg/ml to reach 49.04% at 7.8 μg/ml. Which showed the greatest suppression of MRSA biofilm formation without affecting bacterial growth. SeNPs showed an intriguing antioxidant capacity, achieving an IC 50 of 53.34 μg/ml. This study looked how soaking seeds before sowing them with Se NPs at 50, 100, and 200 ppm affected the plants' development in different parameters, as well as their yield of Vicia faba L. The growth conditions were effectively increased by soaking application of various quantities of Se NPs. The highest values of dry weight/pod (g), number of seeds/plant, weight of 100 seeds (g), and number of pods/plant were caused by high concentrations of Se NPs, by 28.43, 89.60, 18.20, and 94.11%, respectively.

Abstract:There is an increase of pathogenic multidrug-resistant bacteria globally due to the misuse of antibiotics. Recently, more scientists used metal nanoparticles to counteract antibacterial resistance. In this study, orange peel waste (OPW) was used for selenium nanoparticles' (Se-NPs) biosynthesis through the green and ecofriendly method, and their applications as antibacterial and antibiofilm agents. Green biosynthesized Se-NPs were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDAX, and TEM. Characterization results revealed that biosynthesized Se-NPs were highly crystalline, spherical, and polydisperse, and had sizes in the range of 16–95 nm. The biosynthesized Se-NPs were evaluated as antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Results illustrated that Se-NPs exhibited potential antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus ATCC 29213 and biofilm-producing clinical isolates of S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, MDR, biofilm, and quorum-sensing and producing clinical isolates of MDR P. aeruginosa, MDR E. coli, and K. pneumonia). Moreover, results illustrated that S. aureus ATCC 29213 was the most sensitive bacteria to Se-NPs at 1000 μg/mL, where the inhibition zone was 35 mm and MIC was 25 μg/mL. Furthermore, Se-NPs at 0.25 and 0.5 MIC decreased the biofilm significantly. The largest inhibition of biofilm was noticed in MDR K. pneumonia, which was 62% and 92% at 0.25 and 0.5 MIC, respectively. In conclusion, Se-NPs were successfully biosynthesized using OPW through the green method and had promising antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria, which can be used later in fighting resistant bacteria.

Abstract:Anticancer and antimicrobial effect of green synthesized selenium nanoparticles. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have garnered significant interest as anticancer and antimicrobial agents. The aqueous extract of medicinal plant Drimia indica leaves (DI‐LAE) was used to synthesize SeNPs (DI‐SeNPs) that were extensively characterized by UV–visible absorbance, TEM, EDX, XRD, zeta potential measurements, and FTIR. DI‐SeNPs exhibited dose‐dependent toxicity against the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549; IC50 of 43.21 μg/mL). DI‐SeNPs increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in A549 cells. DI‐SeNPs caused cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and increased DNA damage in A549 cells, ultimately driving these cells toward apoptosis. DI‐SeNPs significantly increased p53 levels, decreasing Akt levels and elevating cleaved caspase 3 levels in A549 cells. Additionally, DI‐SeNPs exhibited antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. These findings suggest that DI‐SeNPs possess significant anticancer and antimicrobial properties, mediated through mechanisms involving ROS generation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis induction.

Abstract:Selenium nanomaterials (Nano-Se) are new selenium sources with excellent biocompatibility, degradability, and bioactivities. The objective of the present study is the green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using Diospyros montana Roxb (DM) bark extract, its characterization, and evaluation for in-vitro antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer activities. To synthesize Diospyros montana- selenium nanoparticles (DM-SeNPs), selenious acid (H2SeO3) was reduced using D. montana extract via precipitation technique. UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDAX, and ICP-AES were used to characterize DM-SeNPs. The DPPH free radical scavenging assay and reducing power capacity were used to test DM-SeNP for antioxidant activity. The antibacterial properties of the DM-SeNP were tested using the well diffusion method against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. DM-SeNPs were also subjected to antiproliferative activity using MTT assay via MCF-7 cell line. A peak in UV at 289 nm validated the synthesis of DM-SeNPs. According to DLS, SEM, and TEM images, the size of DM-SeNPs was between 100-150 nm. XRD analysis confirmed the crystallinity of DM-SeNPs. Selenium was verified in colloidal dispersion using EDAX analysis, and ICP-AES confirmed selenium content 63.45 ±18.3 μg/mL in DM-SeNP. The IC50 24.72 ± 0.63 μg/mL and EC50 46.30 ± 0.21 μg/mL values indicated that the DM-SeNPs had a good antioxidant capacity. DM-SeNPs showed comparative better antibacterial potential. The inhibition zones were found to be the highest for E. coli (48.00 mm), B. subtilis (44.14 mm), Klebsiella pneumonia (36.20 mm), and S. aureus (34.16mm), respectively. Antiproliferative activity was carried out, which showed DM-SeNPs were cytotoxic to breast cancer cells line (MCF-7). The IC50 values for DM-SeNPs were found to be 38.19 ± 0.27 μg/mL and Doxorubicin 6.41 ± 0.09 μg/mL, respectively. The study suggests that DM-SeNPs display moderate cytotoxicity that could dose-dependently inhibit cell proliferation. Thus, experimental evidence provides insight into selenium nanoparticle synthesis, its potential therapeutic value, and the prospect of developing a formulation containing DM-SeNPs.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a lot of focus on the environmentally friendly, specifically plant‐based, synthesis of nanoparticles. The extract of leaves from Andrographis alata (A. alata) was used in the current work as a reducing agent to create selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), which will be used in biological applications (antibacterial, antioxidant and antidiabetic, anti‐Alzheimer's and wound healing properties). As part of detailed characterization, the UV–Vis spectra showed an absorption peak at 274 nm with a size in the range of 55–75 nm were shown in morphological investigations using EDS, DLS and SEM analysis to have crystalline spherical‐shaped structures. Against several harmful bacterial strains, SeNPs demonstrated a remarkable antibacterial effectiveness. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of synthesized SeNPs completely prevented the development of various pathogens. Furthermore, bio‐reduced SeNPs showed high cholinesterase inhibition efficacy and good antipotential Alzheimer's. According to the current research, treatment with biosynthesized SeNPs stimulates faster wound healing in NIH3T3 murine fibroblast cell lines without cytotoxicity. Different in vitro biological experiments also showed that, when compared with the extract of A. alata, bio‐reduced SeNPs had considerable antibacterial, antioxidant effects, antidiabetic, anti‐Alzheimer's and wound healing. In general, the findings demonstrate the efficacy and prospective therapeutic uses of SeNPs.

Abstract:In the present study, phytofabricated selenium nanoparticles (PF-SeNPs) were prepared from aqueous fruit extract of <i>Emblica officinalis</i> in a facile, green, economic, tactic and eco-friendly way. The aqueous fruit extract of <i>E. officinalis</i> was found to be rich with various secondary metabolites including phenolics (59.18 ± 2.91 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), flavonoids (38.50 ± 2.84 mg catechin equivalents/g), and tannins (44.28 ± 3.09 mg tannic acid equivalents/g) and determined that highly appropriate for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles. The facile phytofabrication of PF-SeNPs was confirmed by UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopic analysis. The XRD pattern and Raman spectroscopy showed that synthesized PF-SeNPs were amorphous in nature. The Zeta potential analysis confirmed that PF-SeNPs were negatively charged (-24.4 mV). The DLS analysis revealed that PF-SeNPs were in nano size and less aggregated with poly-dispersity index of less than 0.2. The SEM images depicted that PF-SeNPs were spherical in shape. The EDX analysis revealed that PF-SeNPs were constituted with Se (61.60%), C (29.96%), and O (4.41%). The HR-TEM analysis determined that PF-SeNPs were in nano size with an average diameter of 15–40 nm. The PF-SeNPs have offered fascinating bio-potential applications, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and biocompatibility. They have also exhibited dose-dependent free radical scavenging activity, and EC50 was determined as 15.67 ± 1.41 and 18.84 ± 1.02 μg/mL for DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. The PF-SeNPs has also shown the wide range of antimicrobial activity on foodborne pathogens, and it was found to be highly efficient on fungi followed by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The biocompatibility of PF-SeNPs was assessed in N2a cells with much higher IC50 value (dose required to inhibit 50% of cell viability) compared to sodium selenite. Also, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and caspase-3 were much less altered on treatment of PF-SeNPs related to sodium selenite. The cytotoxic studies clearly determined that PF-SeNPs was much less toxic and safer related to sodium selenite. Thus, PF-SeNPs could find suitable application as antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in food, biomedical, and pharmaceutical industry.

Pomegranate Peel Extract Stabilized Selenium Nanoparticles Synthesis: Promising Antimicrobial Potential, Antioxidant Activity, Biocompatibility, and Hemocompatibility

Abstract:The green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) had been synthesized by pomegranate peel extract (PPE). The antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities of the synthesized Se NPs, as well as their hemocompatibility, were investigated. Se NPs were characterized by UV–Vis., SEM, XRD, HR-TEM, DLS, EDX, FTIR, and mapping techniques. HR-TEM image represented the spheroidal forms with moderately monodispersed NPs with a mean diameter 14.5 nm. The SEM image of Se NPs, incorporated with PPE, exhibits uniform NP surfaces, and the appearance was clear. The antimicrobial results confirmed the potential of Se NPs to hinder the growth of some tested pathogenic microbes. Results revealed that Se NPs exhibited promising antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans where inhibition zones were 29, 16, 41, 22, and 54 mm, respectively. Likewise, it exhibited antifungal activity where the values of inhibition zones were 41, 40, 38, and 36 mm against Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and A. niger, respectively. The antioxidant activities of Se NPs at concentrations 250–4000 µg/mL were greater than 90% in all cases. Se NP concentrations of 500 µg/mL or less are safe in usage according to hemocompatibility study. Se NPs had an IC50 of 113.73 µg/mL in a cytotoxicity experiment. Results revealed that Se NPs have promising anticancer activities against MCF7 and Mg63 cancerous cell line, where IC50 was 69.8 and 47.9 μg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, Se NPs were successfully biosynthesized using PPE for the first time; these Se NPs had promising antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities.

Abstract:Herein, four endophytic fungal strains living in healthy roots of garlic were used to produce selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) via green synthesis. Penicillium verhagenii was found to be the most efficient Se-NPs producer with a ruby red color that showed maximum surface plasmon resonance at 270 nm. The as-formed Se-NPs were crystalline, spherical, and well-arranged without aggregation, and ranged from 25 to 75 nm in size with a zeta potential value of −32 mV, indicating high stability. Concentration-dependent biomedical activities of the P. verhagenii -based Se-NPs were observed, including promising antimicrobial activity against different pathogens ( Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Bacillus subtilis , Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and C. parapsilosis ) with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12.5–100 μg mL –1 . The biosynthesized Se-NPs showed high antioxidant activity with DPPH-scavenging percentages of 86.8 ± 0.6% at a concentration of 1000 μg mL –1 and decreased to 19.3 ± 4.5% at 1.95 μg mL –1 . Interestingly, the Se-NPs also showed anticancer activity against PC3 and MCF7 cell lines with IC 50 of 225.7 ± 3.6 and 283.8 ± 7.5 μg mL –1 , respectively while it is remaining biocompatible with normal WI38 and Vero cell lines. Additionally, the green synthesized Se-NPs were effective against instar larvae of a medical insect, Aedes albopictus with maximum mortality of 85.1 ± 3.1, 67.2 ± 1.2, 62.10 ± 1.4, and 51.0 ± 1.0% at a concentration of 50 μg mL –1 for I, II, III, and IV-instar larva, respectively. These data highlight the efficacy of endophytic fungal strains for cost-effective and eco-friendly Se-NPs synthesis with different applications.

Outcome of Pregnancies Complicated by Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Sweden: Acute Pregnancy Complications, Neonatal Mortality and Morbidity

Abstract:This prospective nationwide study conducted during 1982-1985 examined the rates of hypertensive disorders, perinatal mortality and morbidity in 491 insulin-dependent diabetic pregnancies (White's classes: B, 164; C, 129; D, 172; F, 26) and in the total population of 279,000. The rates of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) or pre-eclampsia (20.6%), premature delivery (24.6%), and cesarean section (45.2%) in the diabetic group were more than four times higher than normal. PIH or preeclampsia occurred significantly (p < 0.01) more frequently in patients with diabetic microangiopathy. Mean birthweight was similar in the two populations but gestational age was significantly (p < 0.001) shorter (38 weeks) in the diabetic group. The rate of large for gestational age infants (20%) in the diabetic group was considerably above normal (3.5%). Although perinatal mortality rate in the diabetic group was only 3.1%, it was 4.4 times higher than normal; five of ten fetal deaths were associated with poor glycemic control and thus may not really be unexplained. Neonatal morbidity was significantly more frequent in the diabetic group; still, the incidence of idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome was only 1.6% compared with 0.6% in the general population. Discriminant analysis revealed that gestational age at birth and elevated maternal HbA1c values in early pregnancy independently of each other had a significant impact on the occurrence of neonatal morbidity.
Mediated by tea polypeptides: A green synthesis approach for selenium nanoparticles exhibiting potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties

Abstract:This study presents an ecologically conscious methodology for synthesizing tea polypeptides-selenium nanoparticles (TP-SeNPs) exhibiting antioxidant and antibacterial properties, utilizing tea polypeptides (TP). Proteins were extracted from tea leaves using an alkali extraction-acid precipitation method, and response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the preparation processes for both TP and TP-SeNPs. The TP extract was obtained with the highest TP content of 28.12% at a pH of 6, temperature of 50°C, duration of 3 h, and enzyme concentration of 4%. TP-SeNPs with a minimum particle size of 98 nm were biosynthesized by adding 3% TP at pH 4 and reaction temperature of 55°C for 6 h. The UV spectrum of TP-SeNPs showed an absorption peak at 285 nm. The EDS peak at 1.37 keV confirmed the presence of selenium in TP-SeNPs. Electron microscopy revealed a thin layer coating on the surface of TP-SeNPs. Infrared analysis showed changes in the C=O, NH, and C-N bonds. XRD analysis indicated the formation of a crystalline structure in TP-SeNPs. The absorbance ratio of the peptide selenium nanoparticle colloidal solution remained stable over 7 days at 25°C and 4°C. TP-SeNPs exhibited higher antioxidant activity than SeNPs at high concentrations. TP-SeNPs contain selenium, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, and TP plays a role in stabilizing and encapsulating TP-SeNPs. This may involve physical adsorption, covalent interactions, and other unknown interactions, preventing aggregation or degradation. The crystalline structure of TP-SeNPs improves their material properties and enhances their antioxidant and antibacterial abilities.

Abstract:Selenium is a trace and necessary micronutrient for human, animal, and microbial health. Many researchers have recently been interested in selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) due to their biocompatibility, bioavailability, and low toxicity. As a result of their greater bioactivity, selenium nanoparticles are widely employed in a variety of biological applications. Physical, chemical, and biological approaches can all be used to synthesize selenium nanoparticles. Since it uses non-toxic solvents and operates at a suitable temperature, the biological technique is a preferable option. This review article addresses the processes implemented in the synthesis of SeNPs and highlights their medicinal uses, such as the treatment of fungi, bacteria, cancer, and wounds. Furthermore, we discuss the most recent findings on the potential of several biological materials for selenium nanoparticle production. The precursor, extract, process, time, temperature, and other synthesis criteria will be elaborated in conjunction with the product's physical properties (size, shape, and stability). The synergies of SeNP synthesis via various methods aid future researchers in precisely synthesizing SeNPs and using them in desired applications.

Abstract:In this work, we develop the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (B@SeNPs) using a green method using the aqueous extract of Hibiscus esculentus L. Various techniques were used to characterize bio-synthesized B@SeNPs. The mixture color was clearly changed to reddish at 45-50 °C and the extract pH = 6. According to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), the B@SeNPs were produced, capped, and stabilized using biomolecules found in plant extracts. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis profile revealed an atomic Se signal (1.39 mV). The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern confirmed the hexagonal phase crystalline form of B@SeNPs. The zeta potential for SeNPs was determined to be -51.3 mV. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed spherical Se particles with sizes of roughly 62 nm. Furthermore, B@SeNPs can degrade methylene blue dye by 98.3% at 21 min with a rate constant of 0.1023 min-1 in the presence of NaBH4. In biological evaluation, the synthesized nanoparticles have been proven to be effective against two human cancers (AGS and MCF-7 cells) with IC50 values of 20.46 and 88.43 μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, B@SeNPs showed high safety in the Beas cell line (normal) at 123 μg/mL as the highest concentration. The biofabricated SeNPs had a moderate antibacterial effect against ATCC and multidrug-resistant clinical isolates. They had no antifungal activity against the tested fungus strains except C. albicans (IFRC 1873), with a MIC value of 138.75 μg/mL. Finally, the green-synthesized B@SeNPs could be a contender for further testing as a chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of some human cancers.
