Abstract:The sophisticated, modular and adaptable body plan of arthropods underpins their dominance in marine invertebrate communities. The origin of this body plan from legged lobopodian worms can be inferred from Cambrian Konservat‐Lagerstätten, but our understanding retains some notable gaps: not least in the transition from swimming lobopodians such as Kerygmachela and Pambdelurion to robustly sclerotized radiodonts such as Anomalocaris. A large Pambdelurion‐like fossil from the Xiaoshiba biota, Omnidens qiongqii sp. nov., exhibits a novel combination of characters: an oral apparatus with a non‐radial configuration; and centimetric talon‐like grasping structures with heavily sclerotized blade‐like spines. The novel morphology broadens the interpretative framework for associated Cambrian taxa, demonstrating continuity in the morphology of euarthropod appendages prior to the origin of podomeres. A reappraisal of the euarthropod stem lineage suggests that radially arranged mouthparts may be a radiodont novelty, rather than an inheritance from the ancestral ecdysozoan. These results further resolve the evolutionary origins of the euarthropod body plan.

Abstract:The rise of arthropods is a decisive event in the history of life. Likely the first animals to have established themselves on land and in the air, arthropods have pervaded nearly all ecosystems and have become pillars of the planet's ecological networks. Forerunners of this saga, exceptionally well‐preserved Palaeozoic fossils recently discovered or re‐discovered using new approaches and techniques have elucidated the precocious appearance of extant lineages at the onset of the Cambrian explosion, and pointed to the critical role of the plankton and hard integuments in early arthropod diversification. The notion put forward at the beginning of the century that the acquisition of extant arthropod characters was stepwise and represented by the majority of Cambrian fossil taxa is being rewritten. Although some key traits leading to Euarthropoda are indeed well documented along a diversified phylogenetic stem, this stem led to several speciose and ecologically diverse radiations leaving descendants late into the Palaeozoic, and a large part, if not all of the Cambrian euarthropods can now be placed on either of the two extant lineages: Mandibulata and Chelicerata. These new observations and discoveries have altered our view on the nature and timing of the Cambrian explosion and clarified diagnostic characters at the origin of extant arthropods, but also raised new questions, especially with respect to cephalic plasticity. There is now strong evidence that early arthropods shared a homologous frontalmost appendage, coined here the cheira, which likely evolved into antennules and chelicerae, but other aspects, such as brain and labrum evolution, are still subject to active debate. The early evolution of panarthropods was generally driven by increased mastication and predation efficiency and sophistication, but a wealth of recent studies have also highlighted the prevalent role of suspension‐feeding, for which early panarthropods developed their own adaptive feedback through both specialized appendages and the diversification of small, morphologically differentiated larvae. In a context of general integumental differentiation and hardening across Cambrian metazoans, arthrodization of body and limbs notably prompted two diverging strategies of basipod differentiation, which arguably became founding criteria in the divergence of total‐groups Mandibulata and Chelicerata. The kinship of trilobites and their relatives remains a source of disagreement, but a recent topological solution, termed the 'deep split', could embed Artiopoda as sister taxa to chelicerates and constitute definitive support for Arachnomorpha. Although Cambrian fossils have been critical to all these findings, data of exceptional quality have also been accumulating from other Palaeozoic Konservat‐Lagerstätten, and a better integration of this information promises a much more complete and elaborate picture of early arthropod evolution in the near future. From the broader perspective of a total‐evidence approach to the understanding of life's history, and despite persisting systematic debates and new interpretative challenges, various advances based on palaeontological evidence open the prospect of finally using the full potential of the most diverse animal phylum to investigate macroevolutionary patterns and processes.

Abstract:Bushizheia yangi O'Flynn & Liu, a euarthropod from the lower Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 3) Chengjiang Konservat‐Lagerstätte, possesses both raptorial frontal appendages sharing traits with stem‐group euarthropods, and deuteropodan characters shared by all extant euarthropods (e.g. dorsal arthrodization and arthropodization of all limbs). Microtomography of new specimens of B. yangi shows previously unknown details of head morphology: a six‐segmented head composed of an ocular segment that carries diminutive paired stalked eyes, a post‐ocular segment with deutocerebral frontal appendages, and four subsequent cephalic segments each bearing a pair of appendages. The phylogenetic position of B. yangi in the euarthropod stem‐group adds support to a six‐segmented head being an ancestral state for Deuteropoda. This study also reports the first occurrence of possible eggs closely associated with B. yangi. The homology of raptorial frontal appendages between lower stem‐group euarthropod radiodonts and deuteropods (i.e. upper stem and crown‐group euarthropods) is strengthened by similarity and phylogenetic continuity between B. yangi, its likely sister taxon Kiisortoqia soperi Stein, from the Sirius Passet Konservat‐Lagerstätte, and other euarthropod taxa.

Abstract:Euarthropoda is one of the best-preserved fossil animal groups and has been the most diverse animal phylum for over 500 million years. Fossil Konservat-Lagerstätten, such as Burgess Shale-type deposits (BSTs), show the evolution of the euarthropod stem lineage during the Cambrian from 518 million years ago (Ma). The stem lineage includes nonbiomineralized groups, such as Radiodonta (e.g., Anomalocaris ) that provide insight into the step-by-step construction of euarthropod morphology, including the exoskeleton, biramous limbs, segmentation, and cephalic structures. Trilobites are crown group euarthropods that appear in the fossil record at 521 Ma, before the stem lineage fossils, implying a ghost lineage that needs to be constrained. These constraints come from the trace fossil record, which show the first evidence for total group Euarthropoda (e.g., Cruziana , Rusophycus ) at around 537 Ma. A deep Precambrian root to the euarthropod evolutionary lineage is disproven by a comparison of Ediacaran and Cambrian lagerstätten. BSTs from the latest Ediacaran Period (e.g., Miaohe biota, 550 Ma) are abundantly fossiliferous with algae but completely lack animals, which are also missing from other Ediacaran windows, such as phosphate deposits (e.g., Doushantuo, 560 Ma). This constrains the appearance of the euarthropod stem lineage to no older than 550 Ma. While each of the major types of fossil evidence (BSTs, trace fossils, and biomineralized preservation) have their limitations and are incomplete in different ways, when taken together they allow a coherent picture to emerge of the origin and subsequent radiation of total group Euarthropoda during the Cambrian.

Abstract:The origin and evolution of trilobated body plan of the Artiopoda, a group of epibenthic euarthropods from Cambrian Lagerstätten, remain unclear. Here we examine old and new specimens of Urokodia aequalis, one of euarthropods from the Chengjiang biota, revealing new morphological details and revising its taxonomy. Urokodia possesses an elongate body with a five-segmented head, a thorax with 13-15 tergites, and a three-segmented pygidium with well-defined axial region. The ventral morphology includes paired stalked eyes, one fleshy antenna pair, the following homogeneous head and thoracic appendages, each with an annular proximal-element, an articulated stenopodous branch and a lamellar flap, and the pygidial appendages solely consisting of lamellar flaps. Cladistic analyses resolved Urokodia as the basal-most member of the Artiopoda, offering a hypothesis of the initial origin of trilobation in the pygidium. The new data, in conjunction with the presence of the elongated body plan across major lineages of euarthropods, suggest a convergent evolution of this trait.

Abstract:Extant ecdysozoans (moulting animals) are represented by a great variety of soft-bodied or articulated organisms that may or may not have appendages. However, controversies remain about the vermiform nature (i.e., elongated and tubular) of their ancestral body plan. We describe here gen et sp. nov. a tiny (maximal length 3 mm) ecdysozoan from the lowermost Cambrian, Yanjiahe Formation, South China, characterized by an unusual sack-like appearance, single opening, and spiny ornament. has no equivalent among animals, except , also from the basal Cambrian. Phylogenetic analyses resolve both fossil species as a sister group (Saccorhytida) to all known Ecdysozoa, thus suggesting that ancestral ecdysozoans may have been non-vermiform animals. Saccorhytids are likely to represent an early off-shot along the stem-line Ecdysozoa. Although it became extinct during the Cambrian, this animal lineage provides precious insight into the early evolution of Ecdysozoa and the nature of the earliest representatives of the group.

Abstract:The evolution of articulated sclerites via soft membranes, termed arthrodization, is arguably one of the most critical innovations in animals. Defining the megaphylum Arthropoda, the arthrodization of appendages, or arthropodization, likely predated that of the body, the combination of both being diagnostic of true arthropods (Euarthropoda) – all of these innovations occurring during the Cambrian explosion. Here, thanks to dozens of exceptionally preserved fossils from the Cambrian Wuliuan Stage Burgess Shale (Tulip Beds locality on Mount Stephen, British Columbia, Canada), we show that a distinct but comparable system of imbricated sclerotic elements evolved in the paraphyletic sister group of arthropods, the lobopodians. Entothyreos synnaustrus gen. et sp. nov. has characteristic body plan features of the Collinsovermidae (order Luolishaniida), including anterior limbs for suspension-feeding and stout anchoring posterior limbs. Uniquely, however, E. synnaustrus also displays segmental sclerotic sheets along the trunk, covered in a thin layer of integument, as well as overlapping sclerotized annuli on posterior-most limbs. While the latter elements likely served a protective function, the dorsolateral trunk sheets, which also carry spines, may have facilitated body erection and suspension-feeding. Other luolishaniids possess separate ring-like structures connecting the base of metameric spines which are covered by the apical layer of the lobopodian integument. E. synnaustrus and related taxa illustrate, therefore, an arguably parallel evolution of arthropod-like morphoanatomical features early during the rise of panarthropods. Abstract:Deuterostomes are characterized by some of the most widely divergent body plans in the animal kingdom. These striking morphological differences have hindered efforts to predict ancestral characters, with the origin and earliest evolution of the group remaining ambiguous. Several iconic Cambrian fossils have been suggested to be early deuterostomes and hence could help elucidate ancestral character states. However, their phylogenetic relationships are controversial. Here, we describe new, exceptionally preserved specimens of the discoidal metazoan Rotadiscus grandis from the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota of China. These reveal a previously unknown double spiral structure, which we interpret as a chordate-like covering to a coelomopore, located adjacent to a horseshoe-shaped tentacle complex. The tentacles differ in key aspects from those seen in lophophorates and are instead more similar to the tentacular systems of extant pterobranchs and echinoderms. Thus, Rotadiscus exhibits a chimeric combination of ambulacrarian and chordate characters. Phylogenetic analyses recover Rotadiscus and closely related fossil taxa as stem ambulacrarians, filling a significant morphological gap in the deuterostome tree of life. These results allow us to reconstruct the ancestral body plans of major clades of deuterostomes, revealing that key traits of extant forms, such as a post-anal region, gill bars, and a U-shaped gut, evolved through convergence.

Abstract:The notable disparity of animal body plans can be traced back to the morphological innovations during the Cambrian explosion and represented by a number of exceptionally preserved soft-bodied and skeletal fossils that provide a compelling narrative for animal evolution. Chancelloriids, one of the extinct groups of Cambrian animals, have a distinctive body that characterized by a sclerite-bearing, flexible integument and a single apical opening leading into a central cavity devoid of unequivocal internal organs. Their phylogenetic position within the Metazoa, however, is controversial. Here, we describe new soft-bodied fossils of chancelloriids from the 518-million-year-old Chengjiang biota of China, which corroborate the unique bauplan pattern and reveal exquisite integument microstructures. The tiny protuberances and wrinkling structures of the integument are interpreted to be related to primitive epithelial contraction, suggesting that chancelloriids were a group of basal epitheliozoans and constitute an evolutionary clade that branched below all extant eumetazoans while above or close to the placozoans. Thus, the chancelloriid body plan likely filled one of the anatomical gaps between the Placozoa and the Eumetazoa.

The Cambrian Odaraia alata and the colonization of nektonic suspension-feeding niches by early mandibulates

Abstract:The diversity of cephalic morphologies in mandibulates (myriapods and pancrustaceans) was key to their evolutionary success. A group of Cambrian bivalved arthropods called hymenocarines exhibit diagnostic mandibulate traits that illustrate this diversity, but many forms are still poorly known. These include the odaraiids, typified by Odaraia alata from the Burgess Shale (Wuliuan), characterized by its unique tubular carapace and rudder-like tail fan, and one of the largest Cambrian euarthropods at nearly 20 cm in length. Unfortunately, odaraiid cephalic anatomy has been largely unknown, limiting evolutionary scenarios and putting their mandibulate affinities into question. Here, we reinvestigate Odaraia based on new specimens from the Burgess Shale and describe exquisitely preserved mandibles with teeth and adjacent structures: a hypostome, maxillae and potential paragnaths. These structures can be homologized with those of Cambrian fuxianhuiids and extant mandibulates, and suggest that the ancestral mandibulate head could have had a limbless segment but retained its plasticity, allowing for limb re-expression within Pancrustacea. Furthermore, we show the presence of limbs with spinose endites which created a suspension-feeding structure. This discovery provides morphological evidence for suspension feeding among large Cambrian euarthropods and evinces the increasing exploitation of planktonic resources in Cambrian pelagic food webs.
Marine Origin of the Arachnid Brain Reveals Early Divergence of Chelicerata

Abstract:Cambrian preservation of fossilized tissues provides crucial information about divergent cerebral arrangements amongst stem arthropods. One such genus is Mollisonia, whose clustered appendages beneath a frontal carapace suggest an early chelicerate. Here we apply neuroanatomical, genetic, and developmental analysis to curated fossil data of Mollisonia to demonstrate that instead of a linear organization of seriate parts like in other Cambrian arthropods, the Mollisonia brain is folded back over segmental ganglia of the prosoma, an organization characterizing the brains of all modern arachnids. The unexpectedly early acquisition of this apomorphic character state demonstrates the divergence of marine Arachnida represented by Mollisonia from Merostomata (horseshoe crabs) and its sister group Pycnogonida (sea spiders), both of which have linearly organized cerebra. While fossil evidence supports a marine origin of total group Chelicerata, we show Mollisoniidae defining the base of the arachnid tree of life that excludes Merostomata and Pycnogonida.

Abstract:BackgroundExtended parental care is a complex reproductive strategy in which progenitors actively look after their offspring up to – or beyond – the first juvenile stage in order to maximize their fitness. Although the euarthropod fossil record has produced several examples of brood-care, the appearance of extended parental care within this phylum remains poorly constrained given the scarcity of developmental data for Palaeozoic stem-group representatives that would link juvenile and adult forms in an ontogenetic sequence.ResultsHere, we describe the post-embryonic growth of Fuxianhuia protensa from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte in South China. Our data demonstrate anamorphic post-embryonic development for F. protensa, in which new tergites were sequentially added from a posterior growth zone, the number of tergites varies from eight to 30. The growth of F. protensa is typified by the alternation between segment addition, followed by the depletion of the anteriormost abdominal segment into the thoracic region. The transformation of abdominal into thoracic tergite is demarcated by the development of laterally tergopleurae, and biramous walking legs. The new ontogeny data leads to the recognition of the rare Chengjiang euarthropod Pisinnocaris subconigera as a junior synonym of Fuxianhuia. Comparisons between different species of Fuxianhuia and with other genera within Fuxianhuiida suggest that heterochrony played a prominent role in the morphological diversification of fuxianhuiids. Functional analogy with the flexible trunk ontogeny of Cambrian and Silurian olenimorphic trilobites suggests an adaptation to sporadic low oxygen conditions in Chengjiang deposits for F. protensa. Finally, understanding the growth of F. protensa allows for the interpretation of an exceptional life assemblage consisting of a sexually mature adult alongside four ontogenetically coeval juveniles, which constitutes the oldest occurrence of extended parental care by prolonged cohabitation in the panarthropod fossil record.ConclusionsOur findings constitute the most detailed characterization of the post-embryonic development in a soft-bodied upper stem-group euarthropod available to date. The new ontogeny data illuminates the systematics, trunk segmentation and palaeoecology of F. protensa, offers insights on the macroevolutionary processes involved in the diversification of this clade, and contributes towards an improved understanding of complex post-embryonic reproductive ecology in Cambrian euarthropods.

Abstract:The early Cambrian Kylinxia zhangi occupies a pivotal position in arthropod evolution, branching from the euarthropod stem lineage between radiodonts (Anomalocaris and relatives) and "great-appendage" arthropods.1,2 Its combination of appendage and exoskeletal features is viewed as uniquely bridging the morphologies of so-called "lower" and "upper" stem-group euarthropods.3,4 Microtomographic study of new specimens of Kylinxia refines and corrects previous interpretation of head structures in this species. Phylogenetic analyses incorporating new data reinforce the placement of Kylinxia in the euarthropod stem group but support new hypotheses of head evolution. The head of Kylinxia is composed of six segments, as in extant mandibulates, e.g., insects.5 In Kylinxia, these are an anterior sclerite associated with an unpaired median eye and paired lateral eyes (thus three rather than five eyes as was previously described1), deutocerebral frontal-most appendages, and four pairs of biramous appendages (rather than two pairs of uniramous appendages). Phylogenetic trees suggest that a six-segmented head in the euarthropod crown group was already acquired by a common ancestor with Kylinxia. The segmental alignment and homology of spinose frontal-most appendages between radiodonts and upper stem-group euarthropods6,7,8,9,10 is bolstered by morphological similarities and inferred phylogenetic continuity between Kylinxia and other stem-group euarthropods.

Abstract:The early Cambrian arthropod clade Megacheira, also referred to as great appendage arthropods, comprised a group of diminutive and elongated predators during the early Palaeozoic era, around 518 million years ago. In addition to those identified in the mid-Cambrian Burgess Shale biota, numerous species are documented in the renowned 518-million-year-old Chengjiang biota of South China. Notably, one species, Tanglangia longicaudata , has remained inadequately understood due to limited available material and technological constraints. In this study, we, for the first time, examined eight fossil specimens (six individuals) utilizing state-of-the-art μ CT and computer-based 3D rendering techniques to unveil the hitherto hidden ventral and appendicular morphology of this species.

Aquatic stem group myriapods close a gap between molecular divergence dates and the terrestrial fossil record

Abstract:Identifying marine or freshwater fossils that belong to the stem groups of the major terrestrial arthropod radiations is a longstanding challenge. Molecular dating and fossils of their pancrustacean sister group predict that myriapods originated in the Cambrian, much earlier than their oldest known fossils, but uncertainty about stem group Myriapoda confounds efforts to resolve the timing of the group's terrestrialization. Among a small set of candidates for membership in the stem group of Myriapoda, the Cambrian to Triassic euthycarcinoids have repeatedly been singled out. The only known Devonian euthycarcinoid, Heterocrania rhyniensis from the Rhynie and Windyfield cherts hot spring complex in Scotland, reveals details of head structures that constrain the evolutionary position of euthycarcinoids. The head capsule houses an anterior cuticular tentorium, a feature uniquely shared by myriapods and hexapods. Confocal microscopy recovers myriapod-like characters of the preoral chamber, such as a prominent hypopharynx supported by tentorial bars and superlinguae between the mandibles and hypopharynx, reinforcing an alliance between euthycarcinoids and myriapods recovered in recent phylogenetic analysis. The Cambrian occurrence of the earliest euthycarcinoids supplies the oldest compelling evidence for an aquatic stem group for either Myriapoda or Hexapoda, previously a lacuna in the body fossil record of these otherwise terrestrial lineages until the Silurian and Devonian, respectively. Abstract:The morphology and trunk development of the trilobite Arthricocephalus chauveaui described herein are based on 216 articulated specimens collected from the Lazizhai section of the Balang Formation (Stage 4, Series 2 of the Cambrian) in Jianhe County, Guizhou Province, South China. The new specimens exhibit a relatively complete ontogenetic sequence ranging from the protaspid to holaspid periods and reveal more morphological changes of the species in detail. For example, from degrees 0 to 4, the facial sutures are proparian and then gradually move backward from degree 5, until in the holaspid period, the suture becomes gonatoparian. Based on both linear measurements, we investigate here the morphological variation of some cranial traits throughout ontogeny. Our results demonstrate that the allometric growth pattern shows continuous variations, some of which are related to trunk development. By exploring the trunk segmentation in A.chauveaui, the developmental mode shows that somitogenesis and tagmosis may have developed independently at each meraspid degree beyond degree 0. The holaspid period is consistent with the beginning of the epimorphic phase.
A single-cell RNA-seq analysis of early larval cell-types of the starfish, Patiria pectinifera: Insights into evolution of the chordate body plan

Abstract:Ambulacrarians (echinoderms and hemichordates) are a sister group to chordates; thus, their larval cell-types may provide clues about evolution of chordate body plans. Although most genic information accumulated to date pertains to sea urchin embryogenesis, starfish embryogenesis represents a more ancestral mode than that of sea urchins. We performed single-cell RNA-seq analysis of cell-types from gastrulae and bipinnarial larvae of the starfish, Patiria pectinifera, and categorized them into 22 clusters, each of which is composed of cells with specific, shared profiles of development-relevant gene expression. Oral and aboral ectoderm, apical plate, hindgut or archenteron, midgut or intestine, pharynx, endomesoderm, stomodeum, and mesenchyme of the gastrulae, and neurons, ciliary bands, enterocoel and muscle of larvae were characterized by expression profiles of at least two relevant transcription factor genes and signaling molecular genes. Expression of Hox2, Hox7, Hox9/10, and Hox11/13b was detected in cells of clusters that form the larval enterocoel. By comparing homologous gene expression profiles in chordate embryos, we discuss and propose how the chordate body plan evolved from a deuterostome ancestor, from which the echinoderm body plan also evolved.
A Cambrian soft-bodied conical animal illustrates the origins of lophophorate phyla

Abstract:The origin and early evolution of lophotrochozoans remain a difficult but crucial issue in reconstructing metazoan phylogeny. Exceptionally preserved fossils have provided hopeful information for resolving this lophotrochozoan problem. Here we identify that Conicula striata , a soft-bodied conical animal from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, has mosaic characteristics of different lophophorate phyla. C. striata possesses a phoronid-like vermiform trunk housing a U-shaped gut and a coiled lophophore comprising ≥12 arms with numerous tentacles, but it also bears brachiopod-like features including an undivided mantle enclosing lophophore and a pedicle-like protrusion on annulated trunk. Phylogenetic analysis retrieves C. striata as a total-group lophophorate and as an intermediate taxon between Phoronida and Brachiopoda. This suggests that the bivalved architecture of brachiopods originated from an undivided mantle in a phoronid-like ancestor, and that the ancestral vermiform trunk became reduced during the origin of Brachiopoda, illuminating the origins of body plans in the lophophorate phyla. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Abstract:The origin and early evolution of animal development remain among the many deep, unresolved problems in evolutionary biology. As a compelling case for the existence of pre-Cambrian animals, the Ediacaran embryo-like fossils (EELFs) from the Weng'an Biota (approx. 609 Myr old, Doushantuo Formation, South China) have great potential to cast light on the origin and early evolution of animal development. However, their biological implications can be fully realized only when their phylogenetic positions are correctly established, and unfortunately, this is the key problem under debate. As a significant feature of developmental biology, the cell division pattern (CDP) characterized by the dynamic spatial arrangement of cells and associated developmental mechanisms is critical to reassess these hypotheses and evaluate the diversity of the EELFs; however, their phylogenetic implications have not been fully realized. Additionally, the scarcity of fossil specimens representing late developmental stages with cell differentiation accounts for much of this debate too. Here, we reconstructed a large number of EELFs using submicron resolution X-ray tomographic microscopy and focused on the CDPs and associated developmental mechanisms as well as features of cell differentiation. Four types of CDPs and specimens with cell differentiation were identified. Contrary to the prevailing view, our results together with recent studies suggest that the diversity and complexity of developmental mechanisms documented by the EELFs are much higher than is often claimed. The diverse CDPs and associated development features including palintomic cleavage, maternal nutrition, asymmetric cell divisions, symmetry breaking, establishment of polarity or axis, spatial cell migration and differentiation constrain some, if not all, EELFs as total-group metazoans. Abstract:Tribrachidium heraldicum is an Ediacaran body fossil characterized by triradial symmetry. Previous work has suggested that the anatomy of Tribrachidium was conducive to passive suspension feeding; however, these analyses used an inaccurate model and a relatively simple set of simulations. Using computational fluid dynamics, we explore the functional morphology of Tribrachidium in unprecedented detail by gauging how the presence or absence of distinctive anatomical features (e.g., apical pits and arms) affects flow patterns. Additionally, we map particle pathways, quantify deposition rates at proposed feeding sites, and assess gregarious feeding habits to more fully reconstruct the lifestyle of this enigmatic taxon. Our results provide strong support for interpreting Tribrachidium as a macroscopic suspension feeder, with the apical pits representing loci of particle collection (and possibly ingestion) and the triradial arms representing morphological adaptations for interrupting flow and inducing settling. More speculatively, we suggest that the radial grooves may represent ciliated pathways through which food particles accumulating in the wake of the organism were transported toward the apical pits. Finally, our results allow us to generate new functional hypotheses for other Ediacaran taxa with a triradial body plan. This work refines our understanding of the appearance of suspension feeding in shallow-water paleoenvironments, with implications for the radiation of Metazoa across the Ediacaran/Cambrian boundary.
