Abstract:Hangzhou Bay is one of China's most eutrophic waterbodies, yet water quality observations within the bay are few, and the estuary's nutrient dynamics are poorly understood. Five cruises (summer, autumn, winter, spring) were conducted in Hangzhou Bay and adjacent waters between July 2006 and November 2007 and in August 2018. A steady-state box model was also constructed to estimate summer and winter nutrient fluxes. The results show that the spatial distributions and temporal variations of nutrients within the bay are significantly influenced by not only direct inputs from rivers around the bay but also the Changjiang River plume to the north. Bay concentrations of nitrate (NO3-), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved silicate (DSi) were quite high throughout the year, especially in the head of the bay. Relative to concentrations measured in 1981-1982, estuarine concentrations of NO3- and DIP had increased, whereas DSi had been stable. The model results indicate that riverine discharge is the major source of nutrients to Hangzhou Bay. In both summer and winter, nutrients were exported from the bay to the East China Sea. The fluxes of NO3-, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), DIP, and DSi were higher in summer than winter, but the flux of ammonium was higher in winter. Nutrient fluxes to Hangzhou Bay observed here during 2006-2007 are much higher than those observed in the 1980s. Additionally, nutrient abundances in Hangzhou Bay are significantly higher than those reported for other coastal embayments in China. The difference in algal blooms inside and outside the bay is possibly due to the difference in turbidity or the hydrological conditions.
Real-Time Monitoring of Nutrients in the Changjiang Estuary Reveals Short-Term Nutrient-Algal Bloom Dynamics

Abstract:The Changjiang Estuary is a large-river estuary ecosystem in the East China Sea, and its plume, the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), transports a large mass of nutrients (NO3 + NO2, PO43, SiO32) to the shelf sea, leading to substantial eutrophication; the CDW also supports high primary production. However, relationships between nutrient delivery and phytoplankton responses have been difficult to establish, as many nutrient delivery events and algal blooms are episodic, and the CDW may expand or become detached with changing winds. To study the relationship between nutrient delivery events, algal blooms and estuarine metabolism dynamics, a buoy system was deployed in the CDW from 9 September to 10 October 2013, with measurements of chlorophyll a and dissolved nutrients. Day-to-day nutrient increases covaried with salinity decreases, regulated by both the spring-neap tidal cycle and wind events. Several specific nutrient injection periods were detected, each followed by nutrient drawdown and chlorophyll a accumulation (algal blooms). Each algal bloom had its own unique pattern of nutrient uptake based on change in nutrient ratios (Delta N:Delta P; Delta N:Delta Si) and appeared to be dominated by different algal groups. These events occurred under weak wind and stable hydrodynamic conditions. Ecosystem metabolism based on net community production (NCP) showed that the upper estuarine ecosystem was autotrophic when chlorophyll a accumulated, but heterotrophic when wind-induced mixing strengthened, and upwelling brought organic-rich water to the near surface. In spite of several short-lived algal blooms, the average NCPdaily was negative during the observation period, indicating a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Abstract:The characteristics of nutrient distributions and eutrophication in the Hangzhou Bay and its adjacent waters were described and analyzed based on the data obtained on four cruises of spring,summer,autumn and winter,from July,2006 to November,2007.The results showed that distributions and variations of nutrient were not only related to input of DIN,phosphorus and silicon directly from rivers around Hangzhou Bay,but also influenced greatly by Changjiang River diluting waters.The distributions of nutrient were mainly controlled by physical mixing of diluting water with seawater and biological and chemical removal was relatively insignificant in this area.Behavior of phosphate was indicative of a buffering effect by sorption and desorption of PO3-4-P on suspended matter in spring and in winter and biological activities in some areas of Zhoushan Islands was considered to be an important factor of influence on nutrient distribution in spring and in summer.The concentrations of DIN,phosphate and silicate in the Hangzhou Bay were quite high and showed rich-nutrients condition around year.DIN overload and extra high N/P ratio in Hangzhou Bay and its adjacent waters may be one of factors of the stress of coastal eutrophication.
Long-term alterations of nutrient dynamics and phytoplankton communities in Daya Bay, South China Sea

Abstract:Dynamics of phytoplankton in coastal waters is a function of nutrient influx and the present study investigated the trend in nutrient dynamics and phytoplankton abundance of Daya Bay (DB), South China Sea, from 1986 to 2020. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), Dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) and Silicates were measured. DIN concentration exhibited an increasing trend over the last decades, and it was above the threshold for the phytoplankton growth. DIP level showed a significant decreasing trend throughout the studied period, falling below the threshold for phytoplankton growth in the last decade, where harmful algal blooms were dominated by the dinoflagellates. Long-term anthropogenic influences severely change influx of DIN, DIP, and silicates which in turn shape the architecture of phytoplankton communities. Thus, the understanding of the complex interaction between nutrient influx, anthropogenic activities and dynamics of both water quality and biological elements are particularly important to decide criteria to manage coastal ecosystems.
Long-term changes in nutrient regimes and their ecological effects in the Bohai Sea, China

Abstract:The nutrient regime has changed significantly in the Bohai Sea (BS) during the past six decades because of anthropogenic perturbations. Specifically, the concentration of DIN increased by about 7-fold from the end of the 1950s to the mid-2010s, while DIP and DSi concentrations decreased from the end of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1990s, and have since increased again. Unsynchronized changes in nutrient levels have led to changes in the nutrients structure, which has caused a series of ecological effects. Phytoplankton biomass increased by 6-fold from the 1960s to the mid-2010s. Additionally, phytoplankton composition shifted from a diatom-dominated to a dinoflagellate-dominated system, and the dominant species of macrozoobenthos changed. Red tides rarely occurred before the 1980s, but have occurred periodically and frequently since the 1990s. Finally, the BS ecosystem has shifted from an N-limited oligotrophic state before the 1990s to a potentially P-limited eutrophic state.

Abstract:Long-term changes of nutrients, plankton and macrobenthos were studied to research the transformation of ecosystem in Jiaozhou Bay and Daya Bay in the past 30 years. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate increased with significant changes in nutrient compositions and ratios. Concentrations of Chl a slightly decreased in Jiaozhou Bay but increased in Daya Bay. Phytoplankton abundances increased and diatoms were dominant, however, dinoflagellate gradually had the competitive advantage under high N/P and N/Si in the two bays. Zooplankton biomass significantly increased in Jiaozhou Bay, but only increased slightly in Daya Bay over the past years. Polychaetes were dominant in macrobenthos in the bays, indicating their adaptation to the changing benthic environments. The long-time variations of biocenoses and nutrients reflected that the ecological environments have changed under the influence of anthropogenic activities in the two bays.

Abstract:Planktonic metabolism plays an important role in affecting the energy transportation and carbon cycle of the marine ecosystem. However, its regulation mechanism remains unclear under the continuously exogenous nutrient inputs in nearshore waters. In this study, a mesocosm experiment was conducted in a semi-enclosed bay, the Daya Bay, to explore the responses of plankton metabolic balance and community structure to a concentration gradient of daily nitrogen and phosphorus inputs. The results showed that nutrient enrichments promoted phytoplankton biomass, total primary production, and community respiration, and the promoting effect enhanced alongwith the increase of nutrient concentration. However, the net community production fluctuated more violently between autotrophic and heterotrophic with the increase of nutrient inputs and tended to be more heterotrophic from the 5th day to the 10th day of the experiment. In addition, the daily flux of nitrogen and phosphorus, 2 μmol/(L·d) and 0.066 μmol/(Lμd), respectively, could be regarded as a potential threshold for ecosystem stability and health, since most of the ecological characteristics related to plankton structure and function have undergone significant changes when the nutrient level is higher than that. In the nearshore enclosed or semi-enclosed waters, nutrient from continuous terrigenous input is likely to be concentrated and exceed this level, indicating the ecological risks due to the metabolic unbalance and the deterioration of plankton community structure.

Abstract:Spatial variations in summertime phytoplankton community structure from 1991 to 2017 in Daya Bay, China were investigated in this research. The abundance of total phytoplankton and diatoms significantly increased during the study period in all regions of the bay while an increase in dinoflagellates abundance was only significant in the inner and middle bay areas. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were overwhelmingly dominant followed by Skeletonema costatum. Ceratium furca was the dominant dinoflagellate. Overall, species diversity and evenness indices showed downward trends during the study period. Moreover, the bloom frequency of Scrippsiella trochoidea (associated with red tides) has increased rapidly since the 2000s in the inner bay. These temporal dynamics are largely explained by enhanced dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations, which increased by 64.58% during 2005–2017 relative to 1991–2004, induced by human activities, along with temperature reductions and salinity increases resulting from open oceanic seawater intrusion.

Abstract:Daya Bay is a eutrophic coastal region with dynamic physico-chemical conditions influenced by terrestrial inputs and seawater intrusion. Zooplankton is a crucial trophic intermediary for energy transfer and fishery resources. In this study, we assessed the distribution and composition of zooplankton in Daya Bay during summer and winter of 2015. We found that zooplankton diversity was the lowest and dominated by small copepods (Acartia spp. and Paracalanus spp.) and gelatinous Oikopleura spp. under terrestrial inputs in the Dan'ao River estuary and Aotou barbour. The highest zooplankton diversity was observed at the bay mouth that influenced by salty intruded seawater, and the dominant oceanic species (such as Euchaeta concinna and Subeucalanus subcrassus invaded into the top of the bay in winter. The dominant species in the estuary shift from Penilia avirostris to Acartia spp. compared with historical researches, indicating the effect of human activities on the succession of dominant species.

Abstract:In recent decades, there has been growing concern regarding the effects of human activities on the coastal nutrient cycle. However, interannual variations in the coastal nutrient cycle in response to anthropogenic nutrient input have rarely been quantified. In this study, a hydrodynamic-ecological model capable of describing the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles was used to analyze interannual variations in the nutrient cycle in the central Bohai Sea, a typical semi-enclosed sea in the Northwest Pacific. The results showed an increasing trend of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and particulate nitrogen from 1998 to 2017, whereas different forms of phosphorus showed no obvious interannual variations. The annual nutrient budgets were also quantitatively estimated from 1998 to 2017. This indicates that atmospheric nitrogen deposition plays an important role in interannual variations in the nitrogen cycle. A large amount of nitrogen from anthropogenic inputs was mainly removed by sedimentation processes instead of increasing the standing stock of nitrogen in the sea. With the reduction of anthropogenic inputs, the model showed that a variety of forms of nitrogen concentration decreased linearly, whereas phosphorus concentration increased slightly. Therefore, although environmental governance can effectively alleviate water eutrophication, it is necessary to avoid the situation where the dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration in the sea becomes too low for phytoplankton to grow, which may determine the primary productivity and eventually affect fishery resources.

Abstract:Regime shifts of freshwater ecosystems driven by fast-changing multiple stressors are increasingly occurring. However, lake regime shifts across intensive agricultural landscapes are less explored, especially how different aquatic communities respond to multiple environmental forcings through time is poorly understood. Using a century scale paleolimnological record from Gaoyou Lake in the Huai River Basin, one of the most intensively cultivated areas in China, we analyzed high-resolution sedimentary subfossil pigments and cladoceran assemblages to investigate the dynamic trajectories of plankton communities and detect the potential occurrence of ecological shifts across different aquatic trophic levels. Furthermore, we explored how these shifts were driven by anthropogenic and climatic stressors, and examined the rates of ecological change through time. Our results revealed a significant ecological shift in the cladoceran community around the 1970s associated with the hydrological regulation through damming within the basin. Subsequently, a regime shift for the whole-lake ecosystem occurred in the 1990s, which was characterized by the onset of eutrophication with elevated primary production and decreased water clarity. Redundancy and variance partitioning analyses identified agricultural intensification with substantial anthropogenic nutrient loading as the main driver of lake ecological dynamics. Rising temperature played an additional role. Moreover, we detected two significant acceleration phases of lake primary productivity (in the 1990s and after the 2000s), which were asynchronous with the variability of external environmental drivers. This finding probably indicated Gaoyou Lake has switched from a slow-to a fast-response system with decreasing ecological stability. Our study offers new challenges and insights for incorporating rate-focused management strategies to minimize the risk of catastrophic ecological shifts in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Regime shifts in the diatom-dinoflagellate composition have occurred in the Baltic Sea (BS) and Bohai Sea (BHS) under eutrophication and have affected the entire coastal ecosystem, damaging the regulatory, provisioning, cultural, and supporting service functions of marine ecosystems. Therefore, finding a solution to restore the balance of phytoplankton community composition and mitigate eutrophication is of utmost importance. In this study, the Driver (per capita gross domestic product)-Pressure (terrestrial inputs)-State (seawater environmental parameters)-Impact (proportions of diatoms and dinoflagellates)-Response (eutrophication governance projects) framework served as a guide for our analysis of the causal relationship among various environmental components in the coastal system. The relevant data in BS and BHS spanning from the 1950s to the 2010s were collected and used to construct a diatom-dinoflagellate composition single index, which allowed us to identify the shifts in regimes (mutation points and phases) of the diatom-dinoflagellate composition and environmental factors using sequential t-test analysis. We also identified key environmental factors that moderated the diatom-dinoflagellate composition using redundancy analysis and analyzed the partial effects of the main environmental factors on the diatom-dinoflagellate composition using a generalized additive model. Finally, the regulation of the eutrophication governance investment on diatom-dinoflagellate composition was investigated. We found that (1) BS is a "time machine," with coastal eutrophication governance and regime shift of diatom-dinoflagellate composition and environmental factors two decades earlier than that in BHS; (2) in BS, the key moderation factor of diatom proportion is SiO3-Si and those of dinoflagellates are sea surface salinity and N:P ratio; in BHS, the key moderation factors of diatom proportion are PO4-P and Si:N ratio and those of dinoflagellate are dissolved inorganic nitrogen and N:P and Si:P ratios; (3) it is projected that BHS will enter its recovery phase from eutrophication after mid-2020s. In summary, the N/P/Si stoichiometric relationships should be given greater consideration, with the exception of the "dose-response" relationship in both sea areas. Our results indicate an urgent need for an improved mechanistic understanding of how phytoplankton biodiversity changes in response to changes in nutrient load and how we should ultimately deal with the challenges that arise.

Abstract:Coastal eutrophication is a major issue of marine pollution. The main factors controlling eutrophication must be identified to ensure effective marine environmental management according to the respective local conditions. Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB), located northwest of the South China Sea, is a semi-closed bay influenced by complex water flows and the development of surrounding cities. In this study, we investigated the development of nutrient concentrations and compositions in ZJB seawater over the past 20 years and the factors influencing eutrophication based on several field investigations from 2006 to 2022 and historical data. High concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were the main contributors to the severe long-term eutrophication in ZJB; however, light eutrophication was observed in the outer bay, primarily caused by chemical oxygen demand (COD) and DIP. The primary sources of COD and nutrients were riverine freshwater, sewage outfalls, mariculture and domestic effluents carried by rivers. Tidal effects diluted the nutrient concentrations in the bay with seawater from the outer bay, thereby playing a key role in nutrient redistribution. The DIN: DIP ratio of ZJB showed long-term nitrogen restriction and excess phosphorus, primarily owing to mariculture activities. Marine undertakings can exert various impacts on water quality. Eliminating illegal aquaculture and launching aquaculture tailwater treatment can improve water quality, whereas practices such as channel dredging may worsen it. This study demonstrates the intricate dynamics of the ZJB ecosystem and offers valuable insights for effective environmental management and conservation efforts.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the long-term variations in nutrients in Liaodong Bay and their potential influencing factors based on historical data from 1978 to 2019. Under the influence of both human activities and natural changes, the concentration of DIN increased approximately 4-fold from the end of the 1990s to the mid-2010s, while DIP and DSi concentrations decreased from the beginning to the end of the 1980s and have since increased again. Asynchronous changes in nutrient levels have led to changes in the nutrient composition, which has caused a series of ecological effects. The total phytoplankton abundance decreased from the 1980s to the end of the 1990s and then increased again. Additionally, the phytoplankton composition shifted from a diatom-dominated to a dinoflagellate-dominated system, and the dominant species of zooplankton changed. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) rarely occurred before the 1980s but have frequently occurred since the end of the 1990s.

Abstract:Concentrations and ratios of nutrients in Jiaozhou Bay, China, have changed much in the past decades, with trends indicating an increase in nitrogen and a decrease in silicate. Statistical analysis has shown that the long-term variations of nutrients are associated with agricultural activities, precipitation, and anthropogenic factors. Stoichiometric calculations indicate that the nutrient structure has become more and more unbalanced. There has been almost no possibility for nitrogen limitation since the 1980s, the probability of P limitation has increased, and the probability of Si limitation has also increased markedly from the 1980s to the 1990s. As a consequence of changes in nutrient structure, a decrease in the abundance of net phytoplankton was evident, whereas total chlorophyll a levels have remained roughly unchanged at around 3.55 mu g/L. Thus, it is likely that smaller species have taken the niche vacated by the larger species. Changes in phytoplankton size and species composition may ultimately lead to various functional and structural changes at the system level.

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic nutrients are pivotal in maintaining the material and energy balance of marine ecosystems, impacting the survival and dynamic succession of marine organisms. To gain a deeper understanding of the source and sink characteristics of dissolved inorganic nutrients in bays affected by human activities and to elucidate the processes involving filter-feeding shellfish in relation to these nutrients, this study investigated the source and sink dynamics of dissolved inorganic nutrients in the Dapeng Cove sea area of Shenzhen. Over the past decade, a significant change in the N/P ratio within the survey area has been observed, suggesting a shift in nutrient limitation from nitrogen to phosphorus or phosphorus–silicon limitation. This induced change in the N/P ratio, along with Si/N and Si/P ratios, may facilitate the growth of cyanobacteria and, subsequently, alter the proportions of diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Seasonal fluctuations in human disturbance intensity and precipitation determine the seasonal and spatial distribution of nutrients in the bay, thereby influencing the bay ecosystem metabolism. The Land–Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) model analysis revealed that the bay represents a major source of inorganic nitrogen and a source of phosphate in spring, summer, and autumn, while acting as a sink for phosphate in winter. Furthermore, rivers and groundwater represent the primary sources of phosphate and inorganic nitrogen in the bay. The bay exhibits an annual net ecosystem metabolic rate of 7.06 mmol C/m2/d, with denitrification dominating the nitrogen cycle at 12.65 mmol C/m2/d. Overall, the Dapeng Cove ecosystem displays net production exceeding respiration, classifying it as an autotrophic system. Additionally, the nitrogen cycle in the sea area is predominantly driven by denitrification. The analysis also revealed that the impact of oyster proliferation on the physical and chemical factors in the surveyed area is relatively weaker than that of surface runoff and groundwater inputs.

Abstract:Anthropogenic and climatic stressors on freshwater ecosystems are of global concern. However, the interactions and effects of multiple stressors (e.g., nutrient enrichment, climate warming, altered wind and precipitation) acting over different spatial and temporal scales are often complex and remain controversial. Here, we reconstructed one-century dynamics of eutrophication and primary producer communities in algal-dominated and macrophyte-dominated zones of a large shallow lake (Taihu, China), by integrating sedimentary photosynthetic pigments and geochemical records with water monitoring and historical archives. We aimed to explore the long-term underlying mechanisms of the responses of water quality and lake biota to multiple environmental perturbations. We found that water quality degradation and algal community modification showed similar trends but distinct timings and trajectories in contrasting ecological zones. Onset and intensity of eutrophication in north Meiliang Bay (since the 1950s) exceeded far beyond that of macrophyte-dominated Eastern Taihu (~1990s). Anthropogenic nutrients overtook past climatic control on production and composition of phototrophic assemblages. More importantly, lake phytoplankton responded markedly to climate warming, decreasing wind speed, and extreme weathers after cultural eutrophication. Synergistic interactions of nutrients and climate on lake ecosystems became increasingly significant in promoting harmful algal blooms (HABs) dominated by Microcystis, close to the hyper-eutrophic north lake zones. The asynchronous limnological and ecological responses also indicated the modulating roles of lake ecological regime and catchment hydrogeomorphic characteristic. Collectively, our findings suggest that mitigation of eutrophication and HABs calls for a triple management strategy integrating anthropogenic nutrients, climate change, and lake-catchment setting.

Abstract:The riverine nutrient inputs to the ocean reflects land-use changes and can affect the health of coastal environments over time, especially for a highly-anthropogenically influenced river-estuary-shelf system. To investigate the impact of riverine inputs on the Changjiang Estuary ecosystem at a multi-decadal time scale where long-term observations are limited, we built a three-dimensional physics-biogeochemistry-coupled model system based on the Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) and the European Regional Shelf Ecosystem Model (ERSEM). Our model successfully simulated the temporal and spatial nutrient variabilities in the river-estuary-shelf con7tinuum from 1960 to 2018. The results showed increasing trends of nitrate and phosphate and fluctuating silicate variability, thereby leading to rising nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratios and decreasing silicon (Si) to N and P ratios. Such changes in the stoichiometric relationship of nutrient species also alter the community structure of the primary producers in estuaries. Our model showed a general increase of diatoms over the 59 years, corresponding to decreased proportions of micro-phytoplankton and pico- phytoplankton. With different backgrounds of light and nutrient limitations in the river and inner shelf, our model suggests that the trend of the diatom proportion in the light-limited river mouth is more associated with silicate variability, with decreased diatom proportions occurring in the 2000s. Our model relates the hydroclimate, nutrient load, and biogeochemical cycling, reproducing estuarine ecosystem variability and clarifying issues such as the causality of the ecosystem interactions.

Abstract:The nutrient status in Laizhou Bay has changed in composition and structure as a result of anthropogenic activities and climate change, which has led to several environmental problems (e.g., eutrophication, organic pollution and red tides). To better understand the spatiotemporal variations in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and eutrophication in the Laizhou Bay, we collected historical research data and conducted four cruises in 2021. The highest surface DIN was found to occur in autumn and predominantly concentrated in the southwestern bay. The highest surface DIP content was found in winter and distributed in the northwestern bay. Surface organic pollution showed estuaries as the most polluted areas. In the past 40–60 years, the DIN, DIP, and eutrophication have shown an inverted U-shaped trend, and the bay has changed from N limitation to P limitation. Economic development, phytoplankton absorption, and bottom mineral release are factors influencing the content and distribution of nutrient in the bay.

Abstract:Zooplankton play a pivotal role in connecting primary producers and high trophic levels, and changes in their temporal and spatial distribution may affect the entire marine ecosystem. The spatial and seasonal taxonomic composition patterns of mesozooplankton in Bohai Bay were investigated in relation to a number of water parameters. Bohai Bay is a eutrophic semi-enclosed bay with dynamic physico-chemical conditions influenced by terrestrial inputs and seawater intrusion. The results showed that under the condition of terrigenous input, the diversity of mesozooplankton species near the eutrophic Haihe River Estuary and Jiyun River Estuary was lower than that in the central Bohai Bay, with gelatinous Oikopleura dioica as the dominant species. The mesozooplankton diversity was highest in the bay mouth affected by seawater intrusion, and the dominant oceanic species, mainly copepods Corycaeus affinis, Calanus sinicus, and Oithona similis, entered the inner bay from the bay mouth. Meanwhile, the abundance of mesozooplankton in summer was significantly higher than that in autumn. Compared with historical data, the dominant species in Bohai Bay has evolved from arrow worm Sagitta crassa to copepod Paracalanus parvus, probably due to global warming, indicating the effects of human activities on the succession of mesozooplankton community.
