Abstract:Gamification is increasingly recognized as a promising intervention to promote individual environmental contributions. However, the understanding of the motivations for users' continuous engagement intentions with gamified environment protection remains insufficient. This study explores users' continuous engagement intentions with Chinese pro-environmental gamification Ant Forest, using a research model that integrates the norm activation model, warm glow theory, and technology acceptance model. By analyzing quantitative survey data collected from 525 players of Ant Forest, the model is empirically examined through structural equation modelling. The research results show that Ant Forest users are motivated by a combination of altruistic, egoistic, and pragmatic factors. The identified positive impact factors include personal norms, ascription of responsibility, awareness of consequences, perceived warm glow, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness in improving users' environmental contribution efficiency. Surprisingly, users find Ant Forest enjoyable as a game irrespective of its environmental benefits, but they are not primarily driven by the perceived pure fun from game playing. The findings of the study not only offer a comprehensive explanation for the antecedents of continuous engagement intentions with pro-environmental gamification but also provide theoretical and practical implications for gamification research and design in environment protection contexts.

Abstract:Information technology has created new ways for people to participate in environmental protection. Ant Forest, a pro-environmental game that actively encourages users to take part in offline environmental activities through online gaming content, has gained great popularity. However, research in this area is still limited, and the effect of playing such games on users' pro-environmental intentions in real life and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Therefore, this research draws from Persuasive Systems Design model and value theory and examines the relationships between design features of Ant Forest, users' values and their pro-environmental behavioural intentions. The research model is empirically tested by survey data from 428 Ant Forest users. Results indicate that users' self-enhancement values, including utilitarian, hedonic and social values, and self-transcendence values, including altruistic and biospheric values, all positively affect their continued gameplay intentions and therefore affect their pro-environmental behavioural intentions. Additionally, the primary task support, social support, dialogue support, and system credibility of Ant Forest have varying positive effects on users' perceived values.

Abstract:Purpose Companies are increasingly designing pro-environmental games to motivate users to implement pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs). However, how different types of virtual interactions affect PEBs in pro-environmental games is not clear. Thus, the authors propose that two types of virtual interaction, interactions with game objects and interactions with other users, can induce platform intimacy and love for nature and that platform intimacy has a direct effect on love for nature. Simultaneously, the authors examine the moderating effect of network externality on the relationship between the two types of virtual interaction and platform intimacy. Design/methodology/approach The authors, respectively, employed data from 92 students and 574 Chinese mobile users to empirically investigate the research framework. Findings The findings indicate that participants in interactions with game objects and interactions with other users reported stronger feelings regarding platform intimacy and love for nature, which, in turn, positively influences PEBs. Consumers with stronger perceptions of network externalities were more likely to be affected by the initiation effect of the interaction with game objects. Originality/value The authors introduce the notion of love for nature to the pro-environmental behaviors field and discuss the priming effect of two types of interactions on platform intimacy and love for nature. In addition, the authors focus on the important effect of network externality on users' emotions.

Abstract:Realizing the role of their consumers in mitigating environmental problems, companies have started leveraging gamification technology with persuasive interventions to induce consumers' behavioral changes. Ant Forest—a gamified initiative launched by a prominent Chinese fintech company—empowers users to manage their ecological footprint and promote ethical behavior. However, the research community has primarily focused on Ant Forest's adoption and continuation intention, paying limited attention to how gamification promotes users' environmentally responsible behavior (ERB) in the postadoption stage. This study contributes to this domain by developing a model based on persuasion and motivation theories and the "affordances–psychological outcomes–behavioral outcomes" framework. This model highlights the impact of gamification on consumers' ERB through psychological need satisfaction and belief or attitude persuasion. A total of 1869 survey responses regarding the use of Ant Forest were collected from nine cities in China. The results demonstrate that, from gamification experiences with Ant Forest, users perceive psychological need satisfaction (i.e., perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness), which significantly explains their green beliefs and attitudes (i.e., green task performance, green belief confirmation, and green self‐identity), leading to increased ERB. Additionally, users with a higher green absorptive capacity demonstrate a stronger link between green beliefs or attitudes and ERB. This research shifts the focus from adoption and continuation intention to postadoption behavioral modification and offers insights into creating effective gamification systems for fostering ethical behavior and addressing environmental concerns.

Abstract:Environmental serious games aim to heighten players' awareness and comprehension of environmental issues, thus fostering pro-environmental decision-making. Research to date has affirmed these games' effectiveness in enhancing environmental knowledge and abilities, elevating consciousness regarding environmental matters, and promoting pro-environmental behavioral intentions and actions. Nonetheless, a detailed exploration into the precise mechanisms facilitating these impacts remains scarce. Leveraging theories of motivation, cognition, affect, and behavior, this paper outlines four hypothesized mechanisms of influence and introduces an Embodied-Enactive Cognition Model as a novel perspective. It suggests that future research should expand its inquiry into the multifaceted factors that influence pro-environmental decision-making, deepen the comprehension of the intrinsic mechanisms at play, pioneer novel research methodologies, and diversify the array of categories and contextual applications of environmental serious games.
Research on the Impact of Pro-Environment Game and Guilt on Environmentally Sustainable Behaviour

Abstract:Game strategies are widely used by companies to attract users and increase their stickiness. At the same time, the protection of the ecological environment is also an important expression of corporate social responsibility. This paper explores the integration of social responsibility with gaming strategies from the psychological perspective of game withdrawal, and explores the incorporation of social responsibility as an element in gamification design to reduce user withdrawal behaviour, thereby increasing individual's environmentally sustainable behaviour. We evidenced our hypothesis through two studies. Study one proved our hypothesis by recruiting 106 university undergraduates (from Wuhan University, mean age 20, of whom 47 were female and 59 were male) to prove our hypothesis by recalling previous experiences with different types of games. Study two further tested our hypothesis by manipulating participants' guilt through randomly recruiting 196 participants (mean age 35, of whom 88 were female and 108 were male, 35 of them were students, 107 were office workers and 54 were from other sectors) from different industries through the questionnaire research website Credamo. The findings show that incorporating social responsibility elements into the design of games can make users engage in pro-social behaviour while playing the game, and the guilt that users feel because of the game will be compensated by pro-social behaviour, thus reducing the game frequency and duration and improving the intent of pro-social behaviour. At the same time, players' self-control moderates the effect of guilt on game play volume under a socially responsible gamification design.

Abstract:Increasing energy consumption and growing pollutant emissions speak volumes about the environmental challenges in various countries and regions. As one of the fastest-developing countries, China has been facing a serious environmental crisis, with many parts of the country constantly shrouded in a heavy haze. In order to improve the public’s pro-environmental awareness and encourage people to take action to contribute to energy conservation and emissions reduction, Ant Forest, a gamified participatory communication program, was launched on the top mobile payment service Alipay. This innovative approach links people’s low-carbon lifestyles with afforestation and haze control in the real world through virtual gaming experiences. This case study explains the working mechanism of Ant Forest in pro-environmental communication and investigates its effectiveness in motivating the public to engage in pro-environmental activities. Focus groups and interviews were adopted in this study to collect qualitative data. The results indicate that Ant Forest plays an encouraging role in Chinese users’ pro-environmental awareness and behaviors, but improvements in user experiences are still needed in some aspects. By introducing the haze problem in China and the practice of gamified participatory pro-environmental communication, this paper is expected to provide inspiration and reference for future efforts to promote public participation in environmental protection.

Abstract:The development of the Internet has led to new forms of integration of gamification and environmental protection and has become a new perspective for exploring the emergence of green consumer behavior. In particular, gamification participation motivation has a growing influence on consumers' green consumption behavior, and the magnitude of gamification participation motivation is transmitted to consumers' green consumption behavior through their continuity of use. We choose Ant Forest as the research scenario of the integration of green consumption and gamification in China and try to explore the mechanism of the interaction between gamification participation motivation, continuity of use, and green consumption behavior from the perspective of green consumption. This paper tests the hypotheses through empirical research methods and structural equation modeling. The findings show that enjoyment motivation, social motivation, and achievement motivation positively influence consumers' continuity of use; continuity of use positively influences consumers' green consumption behavior; and the sense of environmental indebtedness plays a moderating role in the relationship between continuity of use and green consumption behavior.

Abstract:Several research studies have pointed out that players' in-game behaviors might be affected by different individual differences, such as player type, personality, etc. However, limited information is found about whether players' environmental perceptions might impact their in-game behaviors towards the environment while playing. To address this research gap, this study analyzes the in-game behaviors data of 640 players within Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH), as well as their environmental perceptions based on the revised New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale, using open data sourced and adapted from Vuong et al. (2021) from the Science Data Bank repository. The obtained results revealed that players' environmental perceptions might impact their in-game behaviors, however this is not always true; the obtained results also revealed that players might behave within the game against their beliefs and perceptions just to level-up in the game. For instance, anti-anthropocentrism players, who are environment-caring, are found to harm the nature within the game. The findings of this study can help to understand how people with different environmental perceptions might behave, hence promoting ecological behaviors. Additionally, they can also help to reveal how to design games that can emphasize environment-friendly behaviors, hence helping to achieve the sustainable development goals of United Nations (UN).

Abstract:Purpose Based on cognitive evaluation theory and gamification affordances, this study aims to understand how gamification affordances influence users' intention to engage in sustainable behaviour and how new trends in Ant Forest influence its impact on green intrinsic motivation to support sustainable behaviours. Design/methodology/approach The authors developed a research model to explore the mechanisms underlying gamification affordances, psychological needs and green intrinsic motivation. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to assess the survey data (n = 393) and test the research model. Findings The results show that different gamification affordances can satisfy users' needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, which positively influences their green intrinsic motivation and engagement in sustainable behaviours. However, some affordances, such as competition, might negatively impact these psychological needs. Originality/value This research updates information system research on environmental sustainability and the Ant Forest context. The authors provide a new framework that links gamification affordances, psychological needs and sustainable behaviour. The study also examines changing trends in Ant Forest and their implications.

Abstract:Mobile applications can integrate games or gamification elements to build a game metaverse, thus increasing use duration. Research on game metaverses is relatively scarce, mainly focusing on the positive effects of game elements. Few studies have considered the push-away power of game or gamification elements. In this paper, we explore the role of pro-environmental cues in mitigating the push-away power of game or gamification elements from the perspective of the adverse effects of game elements. A total of 250 participants were recruited to engage in two two-factor between-subject studies. Study 1 demonstrated that pro-environmental cues increased self-consciousness during the game and mitigated adverse outcomes after the game. The results of Study 2 further supported the findings of Study 1. The results showed that the perception of pleasure during the game reduced the effects of pro-environmental cues. The pro-environmental cues mitigated adverse outcomes after the game experience when perceiving lower or moderate enjoyment. In comparison, the effects of pro-environmental cues on mitigating negative consequences after the game experience were insignificant when experiencing higher enjoyment.

Abstract:<p>We explore potential peer effects in pro-environmental behaviour using Chinese General Social Survey 2013, where individual participations in ten pro-environmental activities are recorded. Instrumental variable regressions suggest that individual pro-environmental behaviour is positively and significantly affected by that of neighbourhood peers. Such effects are robust against alternative estimation procedures and falsification tests. Results further show that, while identified peer effects do function through social networks, such mediation explains only a small portion of the peer effects, which may largely occur among strangers living in the neighbourhood through observation and mimicry. These findings imply that peer effects should be seriously considered in neighbourhood-level interventions to stimulate pro-environmental behaviour more cost-effectively.</p>

Abstract:Ant Forest is an emerging mobile application platform that engages people in environment-friendly behavior with fragmented time and helps them cultivate ecological awareness and habit. Users grow virtual trees on the platform with the energy saved from daily low-carbon activities, and Ant Forest plants real saplings in desertified areas when the “trees” become big enough. Facilitating the public’s participation in such green welfare, Ant Forest is a new-generation persuasive system with functions like social media and gamification. In addition to perceived persuasiveness in the existing literature, this study includes sense of achievement and perceived entertainment as extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, respectively, to explain people’s continuous use of such a system and consequent behavior change. The results of a survey suggest that primary task support, perceived credibility, and perceived social support associated with Ant Forest positively affect the user’s continuance intention through the mediation of perceived persuasiveness, sense of achievement, and perceiving entertaining. Furthermore, perceived persuasiveness and continuance intention lead to ultimate behavior change. The findings suggest the importance of both persuasive and motivational considerations in the implementation of new-generation persuasive systems to make them effective in the long run.

Abstract:With the explosive growth in gamified mobile apps, many enterprises are using virtual corporate-social-responsibility (CSR) cocreation activities to strengthen consumer-brand interactions. However, research on the mechanism by which gamification affordance is imputed into virtual CSR cocreation to improve users' pro-environmental behavior is still lacking. Based on the "affordance-psychological outcomes-behavior outcomes" framework, this study explores the influence mechanism of gamification affordance on users' pro-environmental behavior in virtual CSR cocreation from the perspective of users' passion. Collecting 232 samples through two waves, this study reveals that all gamification affordances (reward, achievement, competition and playfulness) can predict users' pro-environmental behavior. Second, harmonious passion mediates the effects of holistic gamification affordance and obsessive passion mediates the effects of achievement and playfulness affordance on users' pro-environmental behavior. This study can therefore promote user participation in CSR cocreation and foster the implementation of pro-environmental behavior through gamification affordance in practice.

Abstract:Motivating individuals to adopt energy-saving behaviors is critical for promoting environmental sustainability and addressing environmental issues. Gamification, which involves incorporating game features into non-game environments, has emerged as a potential strategy for promoting behavior change in various domains. This study aimed to examine the relationship between gamification elements, self-determination theory (SDT)-based motivational constructs, and motivation for energy-saving behaviors. Specifically, it investigated the impact of six game elements (personal profile, non-fixed structure, feedback, challenges, competition, and social network) on individuals’ motivation towards energy-saving behaviors. An experiment with a simulated game and questionnaire was conducted at Tsinghua University with 40 participants. The measurement data were analyzed using factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Using a novel combination of simulated games and questionnaires, the study assessed the impact of different game elements on energy consumption. The study revealed a substantial reduction of 49% in overall energy usage compared to the baseline, indicating the effectiveness of gamification in promoting energy-saving behaviors. Additionally, the findings also underscored the practical application of gamification elements for energy conservation, emphasizing the importance of incorporating challenges, feedback, and social network to satisfy psychological needs and enhance motivation in designing impactful interventions.
Exploring social media determinants in fostering pro-environmental behavior: insights from social impact theory and the theory of planned behavior

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigates the impact of social media on pro-environmental behavior (PEB) through the lenses of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Social Impact Theory. The research aims to elucidate how social media influences Environmental Attitude (EA) and Subjective Norms (SN), and how these factors contribute to Behavioral Intentions (BI) that ultimately affect PEB. Additionally, it examines the moderating effect of Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) on the relationship between BI and PEB. Methods: To explore these relationships, the study employs a dual methodological approach using Variance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (VBSEM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Data were collected from two distinct samples: 1200 participants from Taiwan for the SEM analysis and 602 respondents for the ANN study. SEM was utilized to explore causal relationships, while ANN was employed to enhance predictive accuracy. Results: The SEM analysis reveals that social media significantly affects both EA and SN, except for Social Networking Site Involvement (SNSI), which does not significantly impact EA. Additionally, the findings indicate that BI mediates the relationship between EA and PEB. However, BI does not mediate the SN-PEB relationship, and the link between SN and BI is found to be non-significant. Empirical evidence also suggests that PBC moderates the BI-PEB relationship, with a stronger influence observed under higher levels of PBC and a weaker influence under lower levels. Discussion: These results underscore the complex dynamics between social media factors and pro-environmental behavior. The study concludes that while social media plays a significant role in shaping EA and SN, its impact on EA is not mediated by SNSI. Furthermore, PBC significantly moderates the BI-PEB relationship, highlighting its critical role in PEB. The discussion addresses the implications of these findings, acknowledges the limitations encountered, and suggests potential avenues for future research.
When and How does in‐role pro‐environmental behavior spill over to extra‐role behavior: Two experimental studies in the retail and education industries

Abstract:By integrating theories of goal proximity and crowding‐out, this research investigates how and when employees' performance of in‐role pro‐environmental behaviors will spill over to future engagement in extra‐role pro‐environmental behaviors. Using two experiments with employees from the retail (N = 338) and education (N = 448) industries, we found a conditional positive spillover effect, mediated by pro‐environmental goal commitment. More specifically, when employees with low intrinsic pro‐environmental motivation received feedback that they had progressed in their in‐role pro‐environmental performance, their extra‐role pro‐environmental behavior intentions increased due to an increased commitment to the pro‐environmental goal. However, when employees had high intrinsic pro‐environmental motivation, this spillover effect was negative (Study 1) or non‐significant (Study 2). To summarize, the positive spillover effect only occurs when employees are not highly intrinsically motivated. Our findings uncover a missing piece in organizational environmental management literature and carry important implications for employee‐oriented initiatives.

Abstract:Environmental education is vital for promoting pro-environmental behavior, and nature-contact environmental education has progressively emerged as an important form of environmental education. Therefore, exploring the effects and mechanisms of nature-contact environmental education is crucial to enhancing pro-environmental behavior. This manuscript focuses on the Qinling ecological environmental education course at a Chinese university, which exemplifies a form of nature-contact environmental education. The research employs the randomized controlled experimental design as the research methodology. A total of 112 students who participated in the course served as the study sample, with the aim of investigating whether nature-contact environmental education can effectively improve students' pro-environmental behavior. Additionally, the study also explores the underlying mechanisms driving this effect. The findings indicate that nature-contact environmental education significantly contributes to improving students' pro-environmental behavior. Furthermore, environmental attitudes and environmental responsibility are identified as key mediators in the relationship between nature-contact environmental education and pro-environmental behavior. These conclusions provide valuable insights for both theoretical research and practical applications of environmental education and pro-environmental behavior.

Abstract:As environmental problems continue to worsen, new ways need to be found to stimulate people to be proactive in protecting the environment and engage in low-carbon behaviors. The use of eco-friendly apps may become a powerful tool for promoting offline environmental activities and encouraging low-carbon consumption behavior. Using survey data from 298 Ant Forest app users and based on the theory of consumption value, this study applies the S-O-R model and uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the impact of Ant Forest usage on consumers' low-carbon behavior. Our research shows that Ant Forest usage enhances users' low carbon purchase behavior and habitual low carbon consumption behavior. Epistemic, emotional, and social values play mediating roles in the usage and low-carbon consumption behaviors of Ant Forest users. When users feel the epistemic, emotional, and social values of using Ant Forest, they are more willing to engage in low-carbon consumption behavior. Herd mentality serves as a moderating variable that amplifies Ant Forest users' sense of experience, enabling them to derive more epistemic and social value from using Ant Forest. Meta-analysis of pro-environmental behaviour spillover

Abstract:When people engage in a first pro-environmental behaviour (PEB1; for example, conserving energy at home), are they more or less likely (positive and negative spillover, respectively) to engage in other pro-environmental behaviours (‘PEB2’; for example, conserving water at home)? We examined evidence for spillover using a meta-analysis of interventions. We coded 22 studies and unpublished data that fulfilled the following criteria: used experimental or quasi-experimental design, showed change in a PEB1 and measured at least one PEB2. Analysis of the 77 effect sizes found in these studies showed that the overall spillover from a PEB1 was positive, though small, on the intention to perform a PEB2 (pooled mean effect size estimate d+ = 0.17). However, the spillover effect was negative and small for actual behaviour (d+ = −0.03) and policy support (d+ = −0.01) for PEB2. Positive spillover was most likely when interventions targeted intrinsic motivation and when PEB1 and PEB2 were similar. Future research in the area should target and measure spillover processes, collect larger samples and statistically test for spillover in more consistent ways.
