Abstract:Efficacy of the Metarhizium brunneum Petch (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) strain ART2825 for control of wireworms (Agriotes obscurus (L.), Coleoptera: Elateridae) was examined in a semi-field pot experiment. Pots were treated in late summer during sowing of spring oat as a cover crop. Survival of wireworms was assessed four weeks after their release in October 2013, and 30 weeks after release in April 2014. Viability and persistence of the fungus was determined by counting colony forming units from substrate samples and microsatellite analyses of recovered Metarhizium isolates. The number of colonies detected in the substrate in October 2013 increased with increasing concentrations of applied conidia, and no significant reduction was observed at the second evaluation date in April 2014. Increasing conidia application rates significantly increased mycosis and reduced wireworm survival, to a level comparable to that of treatment using insecticide-coated oat seeds. The preventive application of M. brunneum conidia to reduce wireworm populations in cover crops, preceding a damage-sensitive crop like potatoes, may be a promising biocontrol strategy.

A Case of Candida Peritonitis Followed by Mediastinitis after Esophageal Perforation in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient

Abstract:Editor: Peritonitis is one of the major complications of continuous peritoneal dialysis (PD) (1). Here we report an unusual case of peritonitis due to candida infection subsequent to a perforated esophageal ulcer. A 52-year-old Japanese male with dilated cardiomyopathy was admitted to hospital in December 1997 for congestive heart failure and renal failure. On this admission, he was unconscious due to shock with oliguria. Abnormal laboratory results included serum creatinine 620 μmol/L and blood urea nitrogen 43.2 mmol/L. He was started on continuous hemofiltration and extracorporeal ultrafiltration. Fifteen days later, he was started on PD with 4 daily exchanges of 2 L peritoneal dialysate. In May 1998, when he developed a low-grade fever accompanied by an elevated C-reactive protein level, throat culture positive for Candida albicans suggested esophageal candidiasis, and treatment was started using oral intraconazole, which, however, was ceased due to drug-induced ventricular arrhythmia on 14 July. The dialysate effluent culture revealed a peritoneal Candida albicans infection just before the patient died on 12 October. Autopsy showed perforated esophageal ulcer, mediastinitis, and peritonitis. Histological specimens from the esophageal ulcer showed colonies of candida, which had disseminated to the diffusely thickened parietal peritoneum showing nodular formation. It has been reported that, in cases of esophageal infection, some unrecognized predisposing medical, anatomical, or functional condition can be identified, and that viral and candida infections are most common (2). In this patient, severe congestive heart failure obliged the patient to remain in a supine position all day long, which may have caused esophagitis. In conclusion, this case suggests that the causes of peritonitis among PD patients may involve fungal esophagitisinduced peritonitis followed by mediastinitis.
Bioaugmentation of Entomopathogenic Fungi for Sustainable Agriotes Larvae (Wireworms) Management in Maize

Abstract:Soil microorganisms influence biotic and abiotic stress tolerance of crops. Most interactions between plant symbiotic and non-symbiotic soil microorganisms and plants occur in the rhizosphere and are sustained through plant exudation/rhizodeposition. Bioaugmentation, i.e., the introduction or amplification of certain plant beneficial microbes (e.g., entomopathogenic fungi) into the rhizosphere, could contribute to controlling insect crop pests and replacing chemical, environmentally unfriendly insecticides. Wireworms, the soil-burrowing larval stages of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae), are major pests of crops including maize, wheat and potatoes, worldwide. Alternative strategies for controlling wireworms are needed because several chemical pesticides used successfully in the past are being phased out because of their ecotoxicity. Therefore, virulence to Agriotes lineatus L. wireworms and plant beneficial traits of entomopathogenic fungi were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. Tested taxa included environmentally retrieved Metarhizium brunneum Petch. (two strains), M. robertsii Bisch., Rehner & Humber (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), and Beauveria brongniartii (Sacc.) Petch. and commercially formulated B. bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (Cordycipitaceae) and Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner 1915 var. kurstaki. In-house reared larvae were dipped in conidial suspension, and maize and wheat seeds were coated with fungal conidia. Metarhizium brunneum strains 1154 and 1868 significantly increased wireworm mortality. Fungi were significantly more often re-isolated from maize than wheat rhizoplanes in laboratory assays. The strains tested were rarely isolated as endophytes. Metarhizium brunneum strain 1154 stimulated wheat growth, while M. robertsii 1880 stimulated maize growth, whereas M. brunneum 1868 and others did not affect root or shoot length or plant biomass significantly in laboratory settings. Metarhizium brunneum strain 1868, re-isolated most often from maize rhizoplane, caused the highest wireworm mortality. It was further evaluated whether M. brunneum 1868 can protect maize varieties FeroXXY, LG 34.90 and Chapalu from wireworm damage and promote plant growth at field conditions. Plants of all three varieties stemming from seeds treated with conidia of M. brunneum 1868 showed significantly less wireworm damage 3 to 4 weeks after sowing (5- to 6-leaf stage) resulting in a significantly higher initial maize stand. However, only in the variety LG 34.90 a significant increase of the maize stand was observed at harvest time.

Abstract:Abstract Annual grass weeds reduce profits of wheat farmers in the Pacific Northwest. The very-long-chain fatty acid elongase (VLCFA)-inhibiting herbicides S -metolachlor and dimethenamid-P could expand options for control of annual grasses but are not registered in wheat, because of crop injury. We evaluated a safener, fluxofenim, applied to wheat seed for protection of 19 soft white winter wheat varieties from S -metolachlor, dimethenamid-P, and pyroxasulfone herbicides; investigated the response of six varieties (UI Sparrow, LWW 15-72223, UI Magic CL+, Brundage 96, UI Castle CL+, and UI Palouse CL+) to incremental doses of fluxofenim; established the fluxofenim dose required to optimally protect the varieties from VLCFA-inhibiting herbicides; and assessed the impact of fluxofenim dose on glutathione S -transferase (GST) activity in three wheat varieties (UI Sparrow, Brundage 96, and UI Castle CL+). Fluxofenim increased the biomass of four varieties treated with S -metolachlor or dimethenamid-P herbicides and one variety treated with pyroxasulfone. Three varieties showed tolerance to the herbicides regardless of the fluxofenim treatment. Estimated fluxofenim doses resulting in 10% biomass reduction of wheat ranged from 0.55 to 1.23 g ai kg −1 seed. Fluxofenim doses resulting in 90% increased biomass after treatment with S -metolachlor, dimethenamid-P, and pyroxasulfone ranged from 0.07 to 0.55, 0.09 to 0.73, and 0.30 to 1.03 g ai kg −1 seed, respectively. Fluxofenim at 0.36 g ai kg −1 seed increased GST activity in UI Castle CL+, UI Sparrow, and Brundage 96 by 58%, 30%, and 38%, respectively. These results suggest fluxofenim would not damage wheat seedlings up to three times the rate labeled for sorghum, and fluxofenim protects soft white winter wheat varieties from S -metolachlor, dimethenamid-P, or pyroxasulfone injury at the herbicide rates evaluated.

Abstract:Wireworm, the larval stages of click beetles, are a serious pest of tubers, brassicas and other important commercial crops throughout the northern hemisphere. No effective control agent has been developed specifically for them, and many of the pesticides marketed as having secondary application against them have been withdrawn from EU and Asian markets. Metarhizium brunneum, an effective entomopathogenic fungus, and its derived volatile metabolites are known to be effective plant biostimulants and plant protectants, although field efficacy has yet to be validated. Field validation of a combined M. brunneum and derived VOC treatments was conducted in Wales, UK, to assess the effects of each as a wireworm control agent and biostimulant. Plots were treated with Tri-Soil (Trichoderma atroviridae), M. brunneum, 1-octen-3-ol or 3-octanone, or combinations thereof. Treatments were applied subsurface during potato seeding (n = 52), and potatoes were harvested at the end of the growing season. Each potato was weighed individually and scored for levels of wireworm damage. Applications of both the VOCs and the M. brunneum individually were found to significantly decrease wireworm burden (p < 0.001). Combinations of M. brunneum and 3-octanone were also found to significantly decrease wireworm damage (p < 0.001), while no effect on yield was reported, resulting in an increased saleable mass over controls (p < 0.001). Herein, we present a novel ‘stimulate and deter’ wireworm control strategy that can be used to significantly enhance saleable potato yields and control wireworm populations, even under high pest pressure densities.

Abstract:CGA-43089 [ α -(cyanomethoximino)-benzacetonitrile] applied as a seed treatment enables sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] to tolerate metolachlor [2-chloro- N -(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)- N -(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide]. Improved tolerance of alexandergrass [ Brachiaria plantaginea , (Link) A. Hitchc.] Eleusine spp., proso millet ( Panicum miliaceum L.) and rice ( Oryza sativa L.) to metolachlor also was demonstrated. Seven sorghum cultivars, representing widely divergent types of germplasm, responded similarly to the safening effect of CGA-43089 when the cultivars were exposed to metolachlor. Treated sorghum seed may be stored more than 1 yr without a loss of safening activity. In these growth chamber experiments, neither extremes of soil moisture nor temperature reduced the effectiveness of the safener. The predominant site of uptake of CGA-43089 is the coleoptile of sorghum seedlings.

Abstract:Spodoptera frugiperda is a major migratory agricultural pest, which seriously impedes agricultural production around the world. To discover potent compounds against S. frugiperda, a number of novel isoxazoline derivatives were designed and synthesized and created on account of the identified lead compound F32 (4-(5-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-3-yl)-2-methyl-N-(3-propionamidophenyl)benzamide). Based on the three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship of those compounds, the compound G22 (N-(4-acetamidophenyl)-4-(5-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-3-yl)-2-methylbenzamide) was developed. A bioassay showed that G22 is highly lethal to S. frugiperda (LC50 = 1.57 mg/L), a more effective control than insecticides fipronil (LC50 = 78.8 mg/L) and chlorantraniliprole (LC50 = 1.60 mg/L). Field trials were also implemented to identify candidate agents. Furthermore, from the insect γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, it is obvious that G22 could up-regulate the expression of GABA of insects, which showed a similar result to fipronil. The analysis of molecular docking exhibited that the hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonds play key roles in the combination between G22 with GABA receptors. This study provides a potent isoxazoline candidate compound for the S. frugiperda control.

A 4-year field study monitoring the evolution of Trp574Leu-resistant plants in an Echinochloa crus-galli population under different crop rotation and herbicide programs in maize

Abstract:Background: A 4-year experiment evaluated the effects of different integrated weed management (IWM) programs on the evolution of a Echinochloa crus-galli population resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors in a maize cropping system. The programs included the continued use of ALS inhibitors, mixing them with alternative herbicides, or without ALS-inhibitors, in all cases under maize monocrop or a biennial crop rotation. Results: IWM programs that relied solely on non-ALS-inhibitors usually achieved high control levels across years (> 90%). Additionally, Trp574Leu-resistant plants became prevalent (> 90%) in programs only using ALS inhibitors, while in the rest the frequency of susceptible plants did not substantially decrease below 40%. Regarding the other monitored grass weeds, Digitaria sanguinalis and Panicum dichotomiflorum were effectively controlled in programs using ALS-inhibitors without soybean rotation or in programs without ALS-inhibitors altogether, excepting the program relying on an 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibitor under maize monocrop for the latter species (0%). Conclusion: At the end of the experiment, the only IWM programs that reduced infestation levels were the one without ALS-inhibitors under soybean rotation, and the one with standard pre-emergence treatments. These findings highlight the effectiveness of crop rotation and alternative herbicides both pre- or post-emergence in controlling E. crus-galli. ALS-inhibitors, while challenged by resistance in E. crus-galli, remain valuable tools for managing other grass weed species in maize. It is crucial to adapt IWM strategies for herbicide-resistant E. crus-galli and other grass weed populations to mitigate the further evolution of resistance. © 2024 Corteva Agriscience. Translocation of chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole applied to corn as seed treatment and foliar spraying to control Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract:The translocation of chemical insecticides in corn plants could enhance the control of Spodoptera frugiperda, based on their application form. Chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole were applied via seed treatment and foliar spray in corn (VE and V3) to characterize the systemic action of both molecules in leaves that appeared after application. Bioassays with S. frugiperda and chemical quantification in LC-MS/MS confirmed the absorption and upward translocation of chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole by xylem to new leaves. Both insecticides caused the mortality of larvae up to stage V6 (57.5±9.5% for chlorantraniliprole and 40±8.1% for cyantraniliprole), indicating the translocation of insecticides into leaves of corn plants when applied via seed treatment. However, the translocation of chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole from sprayed leaves to new leaves was not observed, regardless of the stage of application plus the next first, second and third stages. An increased dosage of cyantraniliprole did not influence on its translocation in plant tissues, however, it influenced on the present amount of active ingredient. The application of chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole in seed treatment is an important alternative for integrated pest management. The absorption and redistribution capacity of chlorantraniliprole and cyantraniliprole throughout the plant confer a prolonged residual action with satisfactory control of S. frugiperda.

Abstract:To develop highly effective, nontarget organism-friendly insecticides based on the isoxazoline scaffold, we rationally designed and synthesized 25 isoxazoline derivatives containing sulfonamides and sulfinamides. Their insecticidal activities against the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua), and Spodoptera litura Fabricius (S. litura) were evaluated. The trifluoromethyl sulfinamide-containing compound 7w displayed excellent activities with LC50 values being 0.09, 0.84, 0.87, and 0.68 mg/L against P. xylostella, S. frugiperda, S. exigua, and S. litura, respectively, which were superior to fluxametamide (LC50 = 0.09, 1.24, 1.10, and 0.65 mg/L, respectively) and maintained at the same order of magnitude LC50 values as fluralaner (LC50 = 0.02, 0.17, 0.12, and 0.19 mg/L, respectively). Importantly, compound 7w showed a medium toxicity level of acute toxicity to honeybee (LD50 = 2.22 μg/adult), which is significantly lower than the fluralaner (high toxicity level, LD50 = 0.09 μg/adult). Acute toxicity experiments with zebrafish (Danio rerio) indicated that compound 7w was safe with the LC50 value being 42.4 mg/L (low toxicity level). Furthermore, electrophysiological experiments and molecular docking studies preliminarily verified that compound 7w acts on the insect GABA receptor, and the theoretical calculations explained that the sulfinamide structure may play an important role in exhibiting biological activities. The above results suggest that compound 7w could be employed as a potentially highly effective, environmentally friendly insecticide to control multiple agricultural pests.

Abstract:Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is an invasive pest, causing significant corn yield losses. Currently, its control is largely dependent on foliar spray with insecticides. Application of insecticides on the cuticular wax and linear long leaves of corn, however, is sometimes ineffective because sprayed droplets may bounce off the leaves and also S. frugiperda larvaes are deeply embedded in the corn whorl and usually emerge at night. Improving insecticide adhesion on corn leaves could increase control efficacy. In this study, three 20% chlorantraniliprole emulsifiable concentrates (CECs) were formulated using neem, sunflower, and grape seed oils. The wettability, emulsion stability, physicochemical properties, control efficiency, and absorption levels of CECs were evaluated by comparison with a 200 g L −1 chlorantraniliprole suspension concentrate (SC). Results indicated that CECs had appropriate emulsification and wetting properties. The work of adhesion of SC was over 1.4-fold higher than CECs, and the surface tension and contact angle of CECs were 1.87–1.94 and 1.69–2.05-fold lower than SC, respectively, which was effective in reducing chlorantraniliprole drift and improving the deposition. CECs and SC were used for controlling S. frugiperda larvae in corn plants in Guangzhou and Nanning, respectively. Results showed that CECs were 1.45–1.60-fold more effective than SC in reducing S. frugiperda larvae in 14 days. The enhanced control efficacy of CECs was related to its improved adhesion performance on corn leaves as chlorantraniliprole on corn leaves were significantly higher, and half-lives of CECs were longer than SC. Our study suggests that improving adhesion performance of a popular insecticide can significantly improve control efficacy of S. frugiperda larvae in corn plants.

Improved chemical control for the Mexican rice borer (Lepidoptera Crambidae) in sugarcane: larval exposure, a novel scouting method, and efficacy of a single aerial insecticide application

Abstract:A three-treatment aerial application insecticide experiment was conducted in five commercial sugarcane, Saccharum spp., fields in south Texas to evaluate the use of pheromone traps for improving chemical control of the Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar), in 2009 and 2010. A threshold of 20 moths/trap/wk was used to initiate monitoring for larval infestations. The percentage of stalks with larvae on plant surfaces was directly related to the number of moths trapped. Reductions in borer injury and adult emergence were detected when a threshold of >5% of stalks with larvae present on plant surfaces was used to trigger insecticide applications. Novaluron provided superior control compared with beta-cyfluthrin; novaluron treated plots were associated with a 14% increase in sugar production. A greenhouse experiment investigating establishment and behavior of E. loftini larvae on two phenological stages of stalkborer resistant, HoCP 85-845, and susceptible, HoCP 00-950, sugarcane cultivars determined that more than half of larvae on HoCP 00-950 and > 25% on HoCP 85-845 tunneled inside leaf mid-ribs within 1 d of eclosion, protected therein from biological and chemical control tactics. Exposure time of larvae averaged < 1 wk for all treatments and was shortest on immature HoCP 00-950 and longest on mature HoCP 85-845. This study shows a short window of vulnerability of E. loftini larvae to insecticide applications, and demonstrates the potential utility of pheromone traps for improving insecticide intervention timing such that a single properly timed application may be all that is required.

Abstract:The writers tabulated the stage of development of approximately 10,000 ears of sweet com of two varieties at the time of treatment. The results when the ears reached market maturity suggest that extra light sodium fluosilicate (70-75%) and a Japanese pyrethrum extract were the most effective insecticides while ordinary black pepper proved to be a very satisfactory moth repellent. The results with arsenates and various nicotine combinations including the new nicotine caseinate were not impressive. Biological observations support the thesis that the larvae migrate from ear to ear and that the loose silk (which receives the coating of dust or spray) is not eaten by the entering larva. It is assumed that the fluosilicates kill by contact or by producing an irritation that impels a cleaning process on the part of the larva after its progress through the dust laden silk.

To introduce a novel insecticide with unique mode of action, broflanilide (BFL) and its binary mixtures with chlorantraniliprole (CAP), fluxametamide, β-cypermethrin or imidacloprid were screened out as seed treatment to control black cutworm in highland barley in the present study. Results: In the laboratory bioassays, BFL had outstanding insecticidal activity to black cutworm with a median lethal dose (LD50) of 0.07 mg kg-1. The mixture of BFL × CAP at the concentration ratio of 7:40 exhibited the highest synergistic effect with a co-toxicity coefficient of 280.48. In the greenhouse pot experiments, BFL and BFL × CAP seed treatments at 8 g a.i. kg-1 seed could effectively control black cutworm, with a low percentage of injured seedlings <20% and high control efficacies of 93.33-100% during a period of 3-12 days after seed emergence. Moreover, BFL and BFL × CAP seed treatments could promote the seed germination and seedling growth of highland barley at the tested temperatures of 15, 20 and 25 °C. Conclusion: Our results indicated that BFL and BFL × CAP were effective and promising insecticides as seed treatment to control black cutworm in highland barley. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
Evaluation of the Field Efficacy of Heterorhabditis Bacteriophora Poinar (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae) and Synthetic Insecticides for the Control of Western Corn Rootworm Larvae

Abstract:The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), is an important insect pest of maize in North America and Central and Eastern Europe. In Central Europe, the larvae emerge in May and its three instars feed intensively on maize roots in June, causing plant lodging that leads to a loss of economic yield. A three-year field experiment (2016–2018) was conducted to compare the effectiveness i) of soil-applied granular insecticide based on the active ingredient tefluthrin, ii) of maize seeds dressed with thiacloprid, and iii) entomopathogenic nematodes Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae, product Dianem) against WCR larvae. An additional treatment with alcohol ethoxylate (i.e., soil conditioner) mixed with entomopathogenic nematodes was performed in 2017 and 2018 to check for any increase of entomopathogenic nematodes’ effectiveness. Field tests were carried out in two fields infested naturally with a WCR pest population, one in Bučečovci (Eastern Slovenia) and the other in Šmartno pri Cerkljah (northern Slovenia), exhibiting dissimilar pedo-climatic conditions and soil pest densities. The treatments were performed in five replicates per experiment in each year. The efficacy of the treatments was very similar at both locations, despite the approximately five-fold lower WCR soil pest densities in northern than in eastern Slovenia, as well as being constant over time. The largest number of WCR beetles was observed in the negative control, followed by that of beetles subjected to thiacloprid treatment (insignificant decrease taking into account the entire three-year dataset). Treatments with tefluthrin (44.1 ± 11.7%), H. bacteriophora (46.2 ± 7.4%), and H. bacteriophora + alcohol ethoxylate (49.2 ± 1.8%) significantly decreased the numbers of emerging beetles. Treatments of thiacloprid, H. bacteriophora, and H. bacteriophora + alcohol ethoxylate additionally led to significantly increased maize plant weights. Furthermore, entomopathogenic nematodes were able to persist in maize fields for almost five months at both experimental locations in silty and sandy loam soils. It was concluded that the control of WCR larvae in maize using the entomopathogenic nematode H. bacteriophora is as effective as a tefluthrin treatment, and could thus offer a sustainable Diabrotica v. virgifera biological control management option in Europe.

Isocycloseram: A new active ingredient for leaf-cutting ants control

Abstract:Leaf-cutting ants are the most important pests in several cropping systems in the Neotropics. Granulated baits containing active ingredients, considered hazardous by the Stockholm Convention, are the usual method to control these ants. Isocycloseram is a new insecticide molecule with high safety margin for mammals, but without registration for the ants in general. Thus, this study investigated the effectiveness of granulated baits with isocycloseram in leaf-cutting ants control under laboratory and field conditions. Initially, the mortality of Atta sexdens workers, fed with dehydrated citrus pulp paste containing different concentrations of isocycloseram was evaluated in the laboratory for 21 days, for toxicological classification. Subsequently, the loading, devolution, and incorporation of baits with different concentrations of isocycloseram and the mortality of A. sexdens colonies were evaluated in the laboratory. After that, the percentages of loading and devolution of baits, foraging activity, and colony mortality treated with 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% of isocycloseram were evaluated for the species A. sexdens, A. laevigata, and Acromyrmex lundii in field conditions. All concentrations of isocycloseram killed more than 15% of ants in 24 h and more than 90% in 21 days in the laboratory, being classified as a fast-acting and highly effective active ingredient. Baits with 0.001 to 0.03% of isocycloseram were highly loaded and exhibited low rate of devolution. The mortality of A. sexdens colony was higher at concentrations between 0.075 and 0.3%, in the laboratory. Baits containing isocycloseram at concentrations of 0.2 and 0.3% were highly loaded, presented low devolution rates, and were highly efficient in controlling A. sexdens, A. laevigata, and A. lundii in the field, at dosages of 6, 10, and 12 g/m² of nest. This is the first report of the use of isocycloseram against leaf-cutting ants, contributing to the development of efficient and toxicologically safer ant baits.
Evaluating foliar insecticides and economic thresholds for Tychius picirostris (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) management in Oregon white clover seed production

Abstract:The clover seed weevil, Tychius picirostris Fabricius (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a major pest in Oregon white clover seed crops. Reliance on synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and limited availability of diverse modes of action (MoAs) has increased insecticide resistance selection in regional T. picirostris populations, emphasizing the need to evaluate novel chemistries and rotational strategies for effective insecticide resistance management (IRM). The efficacy of 8 foliar insecticide formulations for managing T. picirostris adult and larval life stages was determined in small and large-plot field trials across 2 crop years. In both years, bifenthrin (Brigade 2EC), the grower's standard, showed negligible adult and larval suppression. Insecticide formulations with isocycloseram and cyantraniliprole active ingredients reduced adult and larval populations when applied at BBCH 59-60 (prebloom) and BBCH 65-66 (full bloom) growth stages, respectively. While differences in T. picirostris abundance were observed among insecticide treatments, seed yield differences were not detected in large-plot trials. Larval abundance was correlated with reduced seed yield, and an economic threshold of ≥3 larvae per 30 inflorescences was determined as a conservative larval threshold to justify foliar applications of diamide insecticides. Additional commercial white clover seed fields were surveyed to compare larval scouting techniques, including a standard Berlese funnel and a grower's do-it-yourself funnel. Both larval extraction techniques were correlated and provided similar estimates of larval abundance. These findings demonstrate new MoAs, optimal insecticide application timing, and larval monitoring methods that can be incorporated into an effective T. picirostris IRM program in white clover seed crops.
Evaluation of key parameters for developing a Metarhizium rileyi-based biopesticide against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in maize: laboratory, greenhouse, and field trials

Abstract:Background: The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium rileyi is known to cause natural infections in some caterpillars. In this multiyear study, we carried out laboratory, greenhouse and three field trials with the aim of developing a sustainable option for control of the fall armyworm (FAW) in maize. Association of M. rileyi with Spodoptera frugiperda baculovirus (SfMNPV) and delivery strategies were also investigated. Results: The selected isolate (CG381) was effective in the laboratory at a low concentration (~ 4 × 103 conidia cm-2 ), killing >95% of FAW larvae within 8 days. In the greenhouse assay, applications of conidia suspended in water or as dry powder in maize whorls (~ 6.3 × 106 conidia per plant) produced similar larval mortalities (88%-96%). In the field trials, conventional spraying of unformulated conidia (0.6 and 1.2 × 1012 conidia ha-1 ) caused low larval mortalities (27-31%). Simultaneous application of either unformulated or oil-based formulations of M. rileyi conidia and S. frugiperda baculovirus (SfMNPV) to plant rows caused larval mortalities comparable with each of the pathogens applied alone. However, when a formulation containing both pathogens was sprayed directly into the whorls, the overall mortality of S. frugiperda larvae due to pathogens (mostly to M. rileyi infections) reached ~ 59%, twofold higher than the other treatments with conventional spraying, whereas in the control, the overall mortality was only 1%. Conclusion: Optimizing exposure of S. frugiperda larvae to an inoculum of virulent entomopathogens through directed applications to maize whorls is critical to produce satisfactory mortality levels and is promising for integrated pest management.

Abstract:Fall armyworm ( Spodoptera frugiperda ) is a serious pest of various agricultural crops, causing heavy economic losses. Mostly, chemical pesticides are used for its management, but it has developed resistance against pesticides and other commonly used control methods. Studies have shown that the exogenous application of silicon has the potential to make plants more resistant to insect herbivores without causing any negative effects on the efficiency of natural enemies. Therefore, a laboratory experiment was conducted to test the impact of silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) and potassium silicate (K 2 SiO 3 ) applied by foliar spray and soil drenching on its accumulation in maize and its impact on demographical traits of S. frugiperda to check its most susceptible age stage. Results of the current study revealed a significant effect of all silicon applications compared to control on survival rate, developmental duration, the reproduction rate of S. frugiperda , and silicon accumulation in maize. Furthermore, results indicated that S. frugiperda fed on the maize plants treated with foliar spray or SiO 2 showed a lower intrinsic rate of growth ( r ), finite rate of growth ( λ ), and net reproduction rate ( R 0 ) compared to all other treatments. All the treatments showed a significant effect on the adult pre-oviposition period (APOP), total oviposition period (TPOP), pre-adult survival rate, and oviposition days compared to the control. Age stage-specific life expectancy ( e xj ) and Age stage-specific reproductive values ( v xj ) of S. frugiperda were significantly affected in all silicon treatments. From current results, it is concluded that silicon can be used as an alternate method for the management of this destructive pest.
