Abstract:Prevalence of markers of HBV infection was tested in two cohorts of drug addicts: in 140 addicts whose sera were drawn in the years 1985-1986 and in 100 addicts whose sera were drawn in the years 1988-1989. HBsAg was found in 10 (7%) patients in the earlier cohort and in 12 (12%) addicts in the latter, while at least one marker of HBV infection was present in 39% and 69%, respectively No correlation was found between the presence of markers of HBV infection and age, gender, or HIV status, however, duration of drug abuse increased the risk of HBV infection. There was no difference in mean titres of anti-CMV and anti-HSV-1 between subjects with and without HBV markers what suggests that the tested markers were specific.
Patterns of the parasite communities in a fish assemblage of a river in the Brazilian Amazon region

Abstract:This paper characterizes the pattern of ectoparasite and endoparasite communities in an assemblage of 35 sympatric fish from different trophic levels in a tributary from the Amazon River system, northern Brazil. In detritivorous, carnivorous, omnivorous and piscivorous hosts, the species richness consisted of 82 ectoparasites and endoparasites, but protozoan ectoparasites such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare and Tripartiella sp. were dominant species predominated, such that they were present in 80% of the hosts. The taxon richness was in the following order: Monogenea > Nematoda > Digenea > Crustacea > Protozoa > Acanthocephala = Cestoda > Hirudinea. Among the hosts, the highest number of parasitic associations occurred in Satanoperca jurupari, Aequidens tetramerus, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus, Hoplosternum littorale, Cichlasoma amazonarum, Chaetobranchus flavescens, Squaliforma emarginata, Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis and Hoplias malabaricus. A weak positive correlation between ectoparasite abundance and length of the hosts was observed. Ectoparasite communities of detritivorous, carnivorous and omnivorous hosts were similar, but these differed from the communities of piscivorous hosts. Larval endoparasite species with low host specificity were the main determinants of the parasite infracommunity structure of the fish assemblage. Fish assemblage had few species of helminth that were specialist endoparasites, while many were parasites at the larval stage, infecting intermediate and paratenic hosts. Finally, carnivorous and omnivorous hosts harbored endoparasite communities that were more heterogeneous than those of detritivorous and piscivorous hosts. This result lends supports to the notion that the feeding habits of the host species are a significant factor in determining the endoparasites fauna.
Parasitism of Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) in fish farms of the state of Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract:Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the parasites occurrences and to determine the rates of infestation/parasitic infection in juvenile Arapaima gigas from seven fish farms in the state of Amazonas, relating to the characteristics of these fish farms. Of the 70 A. gigas evaluated, 43 were infested/infected, with a total of 133 parasites collected. Three fish farms (2, 4, 6) showed the highest levels of prevalence of parasites (100%, 70%, 70%), mean intensity (4.1±2.6, 8.1±9.2, and 2.1±1.3), and mean abundance (4.1±2.6, 5.7±8.1, and 1.5±1.5), respectively. Prevalence ranged from 30% to 100%, mean intensity from 1.0 to 8.1 and mean abundance from 0.3 to 5.7. Monogenea, Digenea, Nematoda (Hysterothylacium sp. and Spirocamallanus sp.) and Acanthocephala (Neoechinorhynchus sp. and Polyacanthorhynchus sp.) were identified. The parasites Hysterothylacium sp. and Neoechinorhynchus sp. were the most prevalent parasites with 31.43% and 15.71%, respectively. The fish presented negative allometry in growth and constant condition factor. Measures to prevent and control the parasitic diseases diagnosed are discussed as well prophylactic practices that contribute to the biosecurity of the farms.

Abstract:This study investigated the presence of ectoparasites in stranded cetaceans along the coast of Sergipe, Brazil. The parasitological material, dates and informations about the hosts was obtained from a biological collection. Were analysed four Megaptera novaeangliae , one of Sotalia guianensis , and one of Peponocephala electra . A total of 264 ectoparasites were collected from these carcasses – 263 amphipods of the species Cyamus boopis and Syncyamus ilheusensis , and a single cymothoid isopod, identified as Livoneca redmanii . C. boopis showed a average intensity of 77.0 parasites per host, and a prevalence of 100% in the analysed humpback whale carcasses, representing the first record of this louse species on humpback whales in the region. S. ilheusensis appears to have a rare occurrence and specificity to the host P. electra , being its third report in the scientific literature. Additionally, the discovery of the isopod L. redmanii on Sotalia guianensis is unprecedented, being the first report of an isopod parasitizing this cetacean and expanding our knowledge about the host flexibility of this ectoparasite. The attachment of the isopod to the dolphin's skin was likely favored by the absence of mucus, as found in fish. These findings provide new insights into the ecology of these ectoparasites.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> Fish parasites can be good indicators of the quality of water bodies, and their presence or absence can be interpreted as a sign of habitat changes, helping us to diagnose environmental problems. This study was conducted in two estuaries located in the Paraíba state, northeastern Brazil: Mamanguape, an environmental protection area, and Paraíba do Norte, a river with riverside communities along its length. The objective of the study was to determine whether host and abiotic characteristics predict the richness of fish gill parasites and/or the abundance of the most abundant and prevalent parasite species, the copepod Acusicola brasiliensis, testing the species as a possible bioindicator. The fish host species were Anchoa januaria, Atherinella brasiliensis, Mugil curema, and Rhinosardinia bahiensis. Generalized linear models were constructed to test the influence of predictor variables on parasite richness and A. brasiliensis abundance. The predictor variables used in the models were the host relative condition factor (Kn), host length, collection season (rainy or dry), estuary, host species, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a. Both parasite species richness and A. brasiliensis mean abundance showed a significant relation to water quality parameters, suggesting their possible use as environmental quality indicators.

Abstract:Rivers interlinking by transposition projects have multiplied in the world, altering the landscape and flow regime of continental water systems. Recently, an intermittent river in northeastern Brazil has been artificially connected to the São Francisco River basin in a water transfer project. Thus, this study aims to provide an inventory of the fish parasites from the Jaguaribe River basin in the scenarios of pre- and post-transposition, and to evaluate the short-term impacts on the parasite fauna. Of the analyzed fishes, belonging to 31 species, about 30% were parasitized. A total of 47 parasite taxa were recovered, including monogeneans (17), digeneans (9), nematodes (9), acanthocephalans (3) and crustaceans (6), and unidentified cysts of Acanthocephala, Cestoda and Digenea, representing the description of 30 new geographic records and 104 new parasite-host associations. By expanding the range of the geographic distribution of fish parasites and increasing the list of hosts, the study contributes to the knowledge of fish parasites biodiversity in the semi-arid region of Brazil and in the Caatinga domain. Considering all parasite species, significant differences were observed in total prevalence, total mean abundance, diversity index and host specificity index; the highest values of total prevalence and total mean abundance were observed in the post-transposition, while the diversity index and host specificity index was higher in the pre-transposition period. This is the first study evaluating fish parasites before and after a major water transfer event and the results will allow further evaluation of middle and long-term changes in the specific composition of fish and parasites from the receiver drainages.

From Africa to Brazil: detection of African Oreochromis niloticus parasites in Brazilian fish farms

Abstract:Abstract Aim To evaluate the introduction of Oreochromis niloticus gill parasites in the Paranapanema River basin, northern Paraná, southern Brazil, as well as to inventory its occurrences in Brazilian fish farms and discuss the risks of transmission to native fauna. Methods The gills of 632 fish specimens from four fish farms in the Paranapanema Basin were analyzed. The parasites were collected, processed and identified according to specific procedure. Literature review was carried out to compile records of occurrence of gill parasites species in other Brazilian river basins. Results A total of seven (7) species of parasites were recorded, five (5) of the genus Cichlidogyrus, one (1) of Scutogyrus (Ancyrocephalidae, Monogenoidea) and one (1) of Lamproglena, Lamproglena monodi (Copepoda, Lernaeidae). All native from Africa. Some of these species have been reported in fish farms located in five other Brazilian watersheds. However, in this study a greater number of African gill parasite species was recorded in fish farms in northern Paraná (seven species), in the Paranapanema Basin, with Cichlidogyrus rognoni reported only for this basin. Conclusions The results confirm the introduction of these African parasites along with their host, O. niloticus, and the establishment of these species in Brazilian waters, since many specimens belonging to the species identified herein presented breeding activity for at least one period of the year. Although, only L. monodi has been recorded parasitizing Brazilian native species, data reported for other countries demonstrates the imminent risk of transmission of these O. niloticus parasites to native cichlids.
Barnacles as Epibionts in Crustaceans from the Great Amazon Reef System (GARS) Northern of Brazil: New Records and New Host Associations

Abstract:Associations between crustaceans and its epibionts are widely reported around the world in several aspects as: commensalism, symbiosis, parasitism or mutualism. However, these relations in crustaceans for the northern region of Brazil remains unknown. The specimens were collected during commercial fishing operations along the continental shelf (01°23′53.952′′ N; 046°40′46.452′′ W) at the depth of 76 m. We report the occurrence of commensalism between the barnacles species Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758 ) and Balanus trigonus Darwin 1854 as epibionts of Scyllarides delfosi (Holthuis 1960 ), while Lepas ( Anatifa ) anatifera Linnaeus, 1758 was found attached to Spinolambrus pourtalesii (Stimpson, 1871 ), both groups collected from the Great Amazon Reef System (GARS), Pará State, Brazil. The observation of these associations in marine habitats, expand the knowledge of the host selection by the epibiont and raise the distributional range of all barnacle species reported herein from northern Brazil.

Abstract:Populations of freshwater species have been declining rapidly and species are becoming extinct. Thus, understanding freshwater species distribution, trends and patterns is required. The Munim River basin is situated in a region with a phytogeographic interface between the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. Although the Munim basin ichthyofauna is currently relatively well-known, data on its helminth fauna is scarce. The present study aimed to characterize the nematofauna of Bryconops cf. affinis (Günther) and Saxatilia brasiliensis (Bloch) from two different localities in the middle section of the Munim River, and thus to contribute to the knowledge of biodiversity in this region. Specimens of Bryconops cf. affinis were parasitized with the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) krameri (Petter, 1974) and "Porrocaecum-like" species (larvae) in both localities. Saxatilia brasiliensis presented the nematodes P. (S.) krameri, Pseudoproleptus sp. (larvae), Cucullanus sp. and Procamallanus sp. (larvae). Procamallanus (S.) krameri was found parasitizing S. brasiliensis only from the Feio stream. Morphometric data and parasitological parameters are given. The present study provides the first record of nematodes for B. cf. affinis and for S. brasiliensis contributing to the knowledge of the helminth fauna of freshwater fishes from locations that have not yet been studied, such as the Munim River basin.
Host diversity, phylogenetic relationships and local environmental factors drive infection patterns of a non-native parasite in tropical floodplain fish assemblages

Abstract:Biodiversity, biological traits of potential host species, and environmental conditions may mediate the emergence of new diseases. We assessed the relative influence of such factors on patterns of infection by Austrodiplostomum compactum (Digenea, Diplostomidae) in fish assemblages of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. Multiple infection parameters were modeled at the community and species levels using phylogenetic diversity (PD), abundance (total and for a main reservoir species Plagioscion squamosissimus), local environmental conditions and phylogenetic distance from P. squamosissimus (Dis_Plag). In total, 108 fish species were collected and 28 were infected. At the community level, mean parasite abundance and mean infection intensity were positively associated with PD and the interaction between PD and environmental conditions, whereas host richness was negatively associated with PD. The complementary results indicate a biodiversity sampling effect rather than dilution effect. Environmental conditions often had the strongest coefficients in community-level models and mediated associations between infection parameters and other factors. At the species level, consistent negative associations between infection parameters and Dis_Plag indicate phylogenetic niche conservatism of parasites. Integration of community and species-level analyses demonstrates that phylogenetic diversity can affect host–parasite interactions in multiple ways, but that the associations depend on phylogenetic relationships and environmental conditions.

Co-occurrence and niche overlap among gill parasites of the white mullet (Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836) (Osteichthyes: Mugilidae) from the western Atlantic, Brazil

Abstract:Different groups parasitize the gills of fishes, and the organisms can interact in positive, negative, or neutral ways, depending on parasitic abundance, environmental conditions, and the availability of resources. Here, we studied the distribution of ectoparasites on the gills of the mullet Mugil curema in the Cabedelo port region (Brazil), asking if (1) the gill parasites of M. curema fix on specific host gill arches and/or (2) co-occur in the same gill arches within a host individual; (3) if the abundance of one parasite taxon affects the abundance of another on the same gill arches; and (4) considering distinct major groups, if parasites present patterns of co-occurrence on hosts and gill arches different from the expected at random. We used generalized linear models, generalized linear mixed models, and models with zero inflation to define the microhabitats (arches) with the highest abundances of parasites and null models to analyze the co-occurrences of gill parasite groups. Three taxa of Monogenea (Ligophorus brasiliensis Abdallah, Azevedo & Luque, 2009, Ligophorus sp. 1 and Ligophorus sp. 2) and six species of Copepoda were recorded (Bomolochus nitidus Wilson, 1911; Caligus praetextus Bere, 1936; Ergasilus atafonensis Amado & Rocha, 1997; Ergasilus bahiensis Amado & Rocha, 1997; Ergasilus caraguatatubensis Amado & Rocha, 1997 and Ergasilus lizae Krøyer, 1863). We found that, in general, the gill parasites were more abundant/prevalent on specific arches (I and II) of the hosts, shared such preferences and co-occurred on the gill arches. The presence of one taxon influenced the occurrence of another only in the arches I and II; as a result, the infracommunities were characterized as interactive in the gills of this host species.

Abstract:The Neotropical freshwater stingrays of Potamotrygon genus present a unique and complex natural history and biogeographical pattern that can be traced to a marine origin and the colonization of the continental environment during the Miocene. During the evolution of potamotrygonids, several species of the parasitic fauna coevolved and co-opted concomitantly to their hosts during the colonization of the new environments. One striking example can be observed during the colonization of the upper Paraná River region. However, few studies explored the ecological and taxonomic aspects of potamotrygonid parasites. In this work, we investigate aspects of the ecology and taxonomy of the species of Monogenea and Cestoda that are parasites the species of freshwater stingrays of the genus Potamotrygon in the upper Paraná River. Our results indicate that at least six species of parasites are present in potamotrygonids in the region. Two of the observed parasites are putative new species and three of the parasitic species were identified for the first time in the region, hence expanding their geographic distributions. We quantified ecological aspects at different levels of communities for the collected parasite species. We compared the diversity in different locations and hosts and performed an exploratory analysis to investigate the differences in parasite abundance. Additionally, an identification key for the Monogenea and Cestoda species of the sampled region is provided.

Updated Checklist, Traits and Conservation Status of the Ichthyofauna of Aratu Bay, Eastern Brazil

Abstract:Coastal environments, such as bays, are essential to the development of fishery resources due to their economic and ecological importance. This paper presents an updated checklist of coastal marine fishes as part of a long-term monitoring program in Aratu Bay (2014–2024), Bahia state, eastern Brazil. A total of 109 species belonging to 58 families and 24 orders were cataloged. Five endemic species and ten species listed as at risk according to the IUCN criteria (from Vulnerable onwards) were identified. The Carangidae was the most representative family in terms of species number, followed by Gobiidae and Sciaenidae. The ichthyofauna was dominated by mobile invertebrate feeders and macrocarnivores. Two non-native species were observed in the region: the Muzzled blenny, Omobranchus sewalli and the mud sleeper Butis koilomatodon. Aratu Bay supports a diverse ichthyofauna with diverse trophic guilds and habitats, rendering it an important area for the feeding and development of economically valuable species, including those facing threats.

Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment

Abstract:In Brazilian semiarid, highland marshes are home to a great diversity of species; still, these ecosystems suffer constant impacts due to agriculture, logging, and livestock. Here we describe a community of birds and their ectoparasites in anthropized remnants of a highland marsh ecosystem, located in Northeast of Brazil. From August/2018 to July/2019, mist nets were used to capture birds, and their ectoparasites were then collected. A total of 78 bird species from 18 families were captured, of which 25 species and 12 families were parasitized by lice, while 13 species from 8 families were parasitized by ticks. Of the 546 birds captured, 11.9% were infested by 747 lice belonging to 12 taxa, and 4.2% by 27 ticks. Only seven individuals were infested by both lice and ticks. Both lice and ticks showed preference for topographic sites on their host bodies.

Abstract:Abstract Sixty-one specimens of the piranha Serrasalmus marginatus Valenciennes, 1837 were analyzed, aiming at assessing the community structure of their gill parasites. The samples were collected in lagoons of the Paraná, Ivinheima and Baia Subsystems within the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (Brazil). Host size and sex had little or no influence on the abundance and prevalence of parasites. The organization of the gill parasite infracommunities of S. marginatus was significantly non-random according to null models and ordination analyses. In general, parasite infrapopulations were not affected by interspecific associations or host characteristics (e.g. size, sex), what highlights the importance of local habitat characteristics to community organization of gill parasites of S. marginatus in the Upper Paraná River Floodplain.

Abstract:Ophiotaenia is the most diverse genus among proteocephalids, composed of species commonly found parasitizing snakes worldwide. However, the diversity of Ophiotaenia in this region Neotropical is still underestimated. This study describes Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. found parasitizing Erythrolamprus miliaris in Amapá, Brazil. Additionally, we redescribe Ophiotaenia arandasi based on a re-examination of type series and newly collected material from Erythrolamprus taeniogaster in Pará, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners in the following characteristics: scolex width, number of testes, relative length of the cirrus sac, absence of a vaginal sphincter, presence of a vestigial apical organ resembling a sucker, and relative size of the ovary in relation to the surface of the proglottid. Furthermore, we provide taxonomic information for Ophiotaenia arandasi not reported in the original description, including morphology of embryophore, uterine development, and the absence of the vaginal sphincter in the species. Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. represents the 22nd species described in snakes in the Neotropical region and the first formally described in the Brazilian Amazon. Additionally, we provide the first ultrastructural analysis, a new host, and locality records for O. arandasi .

Abstract:Background: Fleas are ectoparasitic insects with holometabolous development. It has a hematophagous habit with mouthparts adapted to sting and suck its hosts. There are about 3000 species in the world, ∼61 in Brazil, and 19 in Rio Grande do Sul state. The objective of the research is to catalog the diversity of fleas recorded in the state, their respective hosts, and endosymbionts. Materials and Methods: To this end, a search was carried out in the scientific literature, from articles, books, to abstracts submitted to congresses. Results: The 19 species of fleas occurring in Rio Grande do Sul are divided into 7 families and 10 genera. These ectoparasites, in addition to being found in the environment, were associated with 10 different families of hosts in Rio Grande do Sul, and on the endosymbiont, agents found associated with fleas, there were 7 different species. The main agents researched in the state are Rickettsia spp. and Bartonella spp. The relationships between parasites, hosts, environment, and etiological agents present different scenarios, whether anthropized or conserved, but unknown. Sometimes, this overlap, a factor that aggravates the possibility of spillovers, either from cosmopolitan fleas in these conserved areas, or from their endosymbionts. Conclusion: Thus, it is important to characterize the environment so that the complexities of each location are known for the adoption of environmental and public health policies in each case. The challenges are extensive, but necessary in view of the One Health perspective.

Abstract:In freshwater ecosystems, parasite infection patterns are influenced by factors including spatial–temporal variations, host diet, and habitat. Fish often change diets, affecting their parasite communities. This study focused on non-native host fish Geophagus sveni , aiming to characterize diet and endoparasitic helminth fauna patterns in the invaded area, investigating spatial and seasonal possible differences of endoparasite infections and correlating with host diet, in São José dos Dourados River and Tietê River areas. The host fish were collected in these areas during the dry and rainy season using gillnets. The endoparasites were collected and preserved in alcohol and identified using taxonomic methods, and stomach contents were examined for diet analysis. Parasitism descriptors were calculated and evaluated spatially and seasonally by ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis tests. PERMANOVA assessed G . sveni diet differences, and RDA correlated the endohelminth abundance with the host diet. Two endoparasites were recorded: metacercariae of Austrodiplostomum compactum (Trematoda) and larvae and adults of Raphidascaris ( Sprentascaris) lanfrediae (Nematoda). Spatial differences were observed for the mean abundance and prevalence of R . ( S .) lanfrediae and A . compactum prevalence. Seasonal variations of parasitic descriptors occurred for the nematode in the Tietê River area. The detritus and aquatic insects were the most consumed items by G . sveni . Detritus consumption positively correlates with nematode abundance. The findings indicate that factors such as artificial channels and rainfall, which can influence resource availability, may affect the fish's diet and potentially influence the structure of its endoparasite community. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding trophic chain-transmitted parasites and calls for further research in Neotropical environments.
