Abstract:The performance of an adult dairy cow may be influenced by heat stress that occurs during her gestation. The present study investigated potential effects of temperature-humidity index (THI) experienced by a cow during pregnancy, on the gestated daughter's performance on her first lactation, for the French Holstein and Montbeliarde dairy cattle populations. Fourteen traits were analyzed, all measured on genotyped cows: 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields, 305-d somatic cell score, clinical mastitis (both occurrence and number of events), body conformation traits, and heifer and cow conception rate. To study the effect of heat stress, we considered the THI experienced by the gestating cow, averaged for each month of her pregnancy and then categorized in 7 classes (≤40; 40-45; 45-50; 50-55; 55-60; 60-65; and >65). These average THI classes were then fitted as categorical covariates in the regression models used for this study, which included other fixed effects, and the genomic estimated breeding value as a covariate, both specific to each trait, the latter previously obtained from the official French evaluations. The THI effect was therefore estimated as the deviation between the observed and the predicted performances. In general, the estimated heat stress effects were small, presenting limited practical impact on the studied traits, and particularly for fertility and udder health, the estimated heat stress effects were not statistically significant. For the production traits, i.e., milk, fat, and protein yields, the estimated effect associated to high THI experienced at the beginning of the gestation was negative, and lightly positive when associated to high THI experienced by the dam at the end of her pregnancy. Finally, our results suggest that under the current French climate conditions, heat stress experienced by cows during any stage of their pregnancy has limited impact on future performances of their gestated daughters, however we cannot exclude that significant in utero heat stress effect may be present in climate conditions warmer than the French.

Abstract:The current investigation aimed to comprehend the inflammatory and related immune responses in intrauterine calves subjected to heat stress (HS) during late gestation. For this purpose, 48 Sahiwal cows in late gestation were chosen and categorized into four equal groups: naturally heat stressed (NHS), cooling-treated (CLT), spring, and winter, and likewise their neonate calves born in summer (IUHS - intrauterine heat stressed and IUCL – intrauterine cooled), spring, and winter seasons. Environmental parameters were recorded, and the temperature-humidity index (THI) was calculated daily throughout the study period. The average THI values ranged between 84.18 (summer-NHS), 73.88 (summer-CLT), 78.92 (spring), and 64.91 (winter). NHS and spring groups exhibited thermal stress based on THI (> 76.00). Various treatments significantly ( P < 0.01) impacted parameters like rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), pulse rate (PR), and skin temperature (ST) in Sahiwal cows and their calves during the study, except for heart rate (HR). Blood samples collected during different seasons and from cows housed in a climatic chamber were used to extract plasma. Plasma cortisol, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were notably higher ( P < 0.05) in the NHS compared to the CLT group. Conversely, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels were higher ( P < 0.05) in the CLT and winter groups. IUHS calves exhibited significantly ( P < 0.05) lower overall mean plasma TAC and IgG levels but higher inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers, such as IL-6, TNF-α, and TBARS. Additionally, significant impacts on body weight were observed for factors such as interval ( P < 0.01) and the interaction between treatment and interval ( P < 0.05), exhibiting consistently lower body weight in IUHS calves throughout the study period. These findings suggest that late gestation heat stress may lead to physiological alterations in future calves. Strategies aimed at mitigating heat stress during late gestation should be considered not only for the productivity and well-being of the pregnant dam but also for the development and future performance of the calf.

Abstract:Introduction: Increasing global temperatures present a significant challenge to livestock production. The dry period is an important stage in the production cycle of cow, and environmental heat stress (HS) during this period can have adverse effects on the subsequent lactation performance. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of HS on endocrine, thermoregulatory, and lactation parameters in heat-tolerant dry cows (HTDC) and heat-sensitive dry cows (HSDC). Methods: We measured the respiratory rate (RR), body temperature (BT), and temperature-humidity index (THI) in 66 dry cows during HS. The slopes of RR and BT to THI were determined through analysis of measurements and dry cows background information using a mixed-effects model. Subsequently, the heat tolerance or sensitivity of dry cows was assessed using clustering method (HTDC = 19 and HSDC = 47). Results: Compared with that of HSDC, the RR of HTDC significantly increased after exposure to HS ( p < 0.05). The average reduction in milk yield from new lactation to the previous lactation was significantly lower in HTDC compared to HSDC ( p < 0.05). Plasma cortisol and non-esterified fatty acid levels were significantly lower in HTDC compared to HSDC ( p < 0.05), while plasma triiodothyronine ( p = 0.07) and growth hormone ( p = 0.08) levels tended to be higher in HTDC relative to HSDC. Discussion: HTDC can more effectively alleviate the impacts of HS through their superior thermoregulation and metabolism, thereby ensuring optimal postpartum lactation performance.

Abstract:Exposure of dairy cows to heat stress negatively affects welfare and performance during all phases of the lactation cycle. Detrimental effects include decreased milk and reproductive performance, reduced immune status and health, and altered natural behaviors. While we understand how mature cows respond to heat stress, the effects of late gestation heat stress on pregnant heifers is still unknown. Automated monitoring devices were used to document the behavioral activity of heifers during the pre- (final 60 d of gestation) and postpartum (first 60 d of lactation) periods. Twenty-five pregnant Holstein heifers were housed in a free-stall barn and enrolled to heat stress (HT; shade; n = 13) or cooling (CL; shade, soakers and fans; n = 12) treatments during the last 60 days of gestation. All animals were provided active cooling postpartum. Upon enrollment, heifers were fitted with a leg tag, which measured daily lying time, number of steps, and standing bouts, and a neck tag that measured eating and rumination times. Rectal temperatures (RT) and respiration rates (RR) were measured thrice weekly during the prepartum period. Relative to CL, HT heifers had elevated RT (38.8 vs. 38.7 ± 0.04°C) and RR (59.6 vs. 44.4 ± 1.9 breaths/min) during the prepartum period. Heat-stressed heifers tended to spend more time eating (224 vs. 183 min/d) and less time ruminating (465 vs. 518 min/d) during the prepartum period compared to CL, but dry matter intake did not differ. During the postpartum period, HT heifers spent more time eating (209 vs. 180 min/d) during weeks 1–4 of lactation, but rumination time was similar. Lying time was reduced by 59 and 88 min per day during weeks −7 and −6 prepartum and 84 and 50 min per day during weeks 2 and 3 postpartum in HT heifers, relative to CL. The number of steps was greater for HT during the postpartum period, from weeks 2 to 9 (3019 vs. 2681 steps/d). Eating frequency was similar during pre- and postpartum periods, however, based on semi quantitative visualization of the smarttag reports, HT consumed larger meals at night during the pre- and postpartum periods compared with CL heifers. In summary, late-gestation exposure to heat stress affects the daily time budget of first lactation heifers during both the pre- and postpartum periods. Current insights of heat stress effects on behavioral responses of dairy heifers may contribute to the development of more effective management strategies to mitigate heat load.

Abstract:Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2), a member of the lipocalin family that carries small lipophilic ligands, has gained recent attention as both a potential biomarker and a modulator of human cancers. Here we describe recent findings of the functions of Lcn2 in breast cancer and the potential mechanisms that underlie its actions. Lcn2 has been shown to induce the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer cells and to promote breast tumor invasion. Estrogen receptor α may participate in the pathway that leads to Lcn2-induced EMT. Preliminary evidence also suggests that Lcn2 may be used as a potential non-invasive urinary biomarker of breast cancer. Elevated levels of Lcn2 have also been reported in other human cancers. The potential roles of Lcn2 in some other epithelial tumors as well as leukemia are also reviewed and discussed here.

Abstract:Heat stress (HS) during the dry period of dairy cows in hot and dry conditions compromises the physiological status and mammary gland development of dairy cows, thereby negatively affecting milk component yield in the subsequent lactation. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of cooling Holstein cows under moderate or higher HS conditions (i.e., ambient temperature higher than 30 °C, with a temperature-humidity index of 78.2 units) during the dry period on prepartum physiological status, postpartum productivity, and calf growth. Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows were divided into two groups: one with a cooling system based on spray and fans under a pen shade (CL, n = 12) and the other not-cooled (NC, n = 12). The cooling system operated 10 h/d (09:00–19:00 h) for 60 d prepartum. During the morning, rectal temperature and respiration frequency were lower in CL cows, but not in the afternoon, which was attributed to higher ( P < 0.01) dry matter intake by CL cows. Total serum protein was higher ( P < 0.01) in CL cows, but hemoglobin was higher in NC cows ( P < 0.01), with no differences in other electrolytes, hormones, hematological components, and metabolites. Milk fat and fat and fat-protein corrected milk were higher ( P < 0.05) in CL cows. Female and birth weight trended ( P = 0.08) to be higher in CL cows. Cooling cows during the dry period had a limited effect on physiology prepartum but increased postpartum productivity of Holstein cows under hot and dry conditions.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate whether heat stress, as defined by the temperature-humidity index (THI) during the close-up dry period, had any impact on the productive performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices of dairy cows in the subsequent lactation. Lactation performance was associated with increasing THI values on - 21, - 14, and - 7 d before calving resulting in decreased milk yield by about 2.30, 2.60, and 2.90 kg, respectively. The THI on the - 7 d before the calving was negatively associated with fertility parameters such as delayed first estrus postpartum, an elongated calving interval by approximately 32 d, a higher number of services per conception by 1.00, and an elongated artificial insemination service period, days open, and inter-calving period by about 20, 52, and 52 d, respectively. The study found that the immunometabolic blood indices were associated with increasing THI values during the close-up dry period. The study showed that exposing dairy cows to close-up dry period heat stress had negative consequences on performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices in the subsequent lactation. Therefore, it is recommended that herd management and barn microclimate changes be implemented earlier, starting from the late dry period, to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress.

Abstract:Heat stress imposes a challenge to the dairy industry, even in northern latitudes. In this study, publicly available weather station data were combined with test-day records for milk, fat, and protein yields to identify the temperature–humidity index (THI) thresholds at which heat load starts affecting milk production traits in Canadian Holstein cows. Production loss per THI unit above the threshold for each trait was estimated. Test-day records from 2010 to 2019 from 166,749 cows raised in Ontario and from 221,214 cows raised in Quebec were analyzed. Annual economic losses (EL) due to heat stress were estimated from the average losses of fat and protein yields based on the annual average of 156 d with THI exceeding the calculated thresholds. Average thresholds for the daily maximum (THI max ) and daily average (THI avg ) THI estimated across lactations in both provinces were THI max (THI avg ) 68 (64), 57 (50), and 60 (58) for milk, fat, and protein yield, respectively, indicating that milk components are more sensitive to heat stress. An EL of about $34.5 million per year was estimated. Our findings contribute to an initial investigation into the impact of heat stress on the Canadian dairy industry and provide a basis for genetic studies on heat tolerance.

Genotype by heat stress interactions for production and functional traits in dairy cows from an across-generation perspective

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze time-lagged heat stress (HS) effects during late gestation on genetic co(variance) components in dairy cattle across generations for production, female fertility, and health traits. The data set for production and female fertility traits considered 162,492 Holstein Friesian cows from calving years 2003 to 2012, kept in medium-sized family farms. The health data set included 69,986 cows from calving years 2008 to 2016, kept in participating large-scale co-operator herds. Production traits were milk yield (MKG), fat percentage (fat%), and somatic cell score (SCS) from the first official test-day in first lactation. Female fertility traits were the nonreturn rate after 56 d (NRR56) in heifers and the interval from calving to first insemination (ICFI) in first-parity cows. Health traits included clinical mastitis (MAST), digital dermatitis (DD), and endometritis (EM) in the early lactation period in first-parity cows. Meteorological data included temperature and humidity from public weather stations in closest herd distance. The HS indicator was the temperature-humidity index (THI) during dams' late gestation, also defined as in utero HS. For the genetic analyses of production, female fertility, and health traits in the offspring generation, a sire-maternal grandsire random regression model with Legendre polynomials of order 3 for the production and of order 2 for the fertility and health traits on prenatal THI, was applied. All statistical models additionally considered a random maternal effect. THI from late gestation (i.e., prenatal climate conditions), influenced genetic parameter estimates in the offspring generation. For MKG, heritabilities and additive genetic variances decreased in a wave-like pattern with increasing THI. Especially for THI >58, the decrease was very obvious with a minimal heritability of 0.08. For fat% and SCS, heritabilities increased slightly subjected to prenatal HS conditions at THI >67. The ICFI heritabilities differed marginally across THI [heritability (h2) = 0.02-0.04]. For NRR56, MAST, and DD, curves for heritabilities and genetic variances were U-shaped, with largest estimates at the extreme ends of the THI scale. For EM, heritability increased from THI 25 (h2 = 0.13) to THI 71 (h2 = 0.39). The trait-specific alterations of genetic parameters along the THI gradient indicate pronounced genetic differentiation due to intrauterine HS for NRR56, MAST, DD, and EM, but decreasing genetic variation for MKG and ICFI. Genetic correlations smaller than 0.80 for NRR56, MAST, DD, and EM between THI 65 with corresponding traits at remaining THI indicated genotype by environment interactions. The lowest genetic correlations were identified when considering the most distant THI. For MKG, fat%, SCS, and ICFI, genetic correlations throughout were larger than 0.80, disproving concerns for any genotype by environment interactions. Variations in genetic (co)variance components across prenatal THI may be due to epigenetic modifications in the offspring genome, triggered by in utero HS. Epigenetic modifications have a persistent effect on phenotypic responses, even for traits recorded late in life. However, it is imperative to infer the underlying epigenetic mechanisms in ongoing molecular experiments.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the influence of heat stress during the dry period on milk yield and reproductive performance of Holstein cows in a hot environment. Breeding and milk production records of cows, as well as meteorological data between 2017 and 2020 from a commercial dairy herd ( n = 12,102 lactations), were used to determine the relationship between climatic conditions during the dry period (average of the temperature-humidity index (THI) at the beginning, middle, and end of the dry period) and reproductive efficiency and milk yield traits. THI was divided into 80 (severe heat stress). First-service pregnancy rate of cows decreased ( P < 0.01) with increasing hyperthermia during the dry period (9.5, 7.3, and 3.4% for THI 80, respectively). All-service pregnancy rate was highest ( P < 0.01) for cows not undergoing heat stress during the dry period (60.2%) and lowest (42.6%) for cows with severe heat stress during the dry period. Cows not experiencing heat stress during the dry period required a mean ± SD of 5.6 ± 3.8 services per pregnancy compared with 6.5 ± 3.6 ( P 80 during the dry period. Cows not suffering heat stress during the dry period produced more ( P < 0.01) 305-day milk (10,926 ± 1206 kg) than cows subjected to moderate (10,799 ± 1254 kg) or severe (10,691 ± 1297 kg) heat stress during the dry period. Total milk yield did not differ ( P > 0.10) between cows not undergoing heat stress (13,337 ± 3346 kg) and cows subjected to severe heat stress during the dry period (13,911 ± 4018 kg). It was concluded that environmental management of dry cows during hot months is warranted to maximize reproductive performance and milk yield in the following lactation.

Abstract:This study examined the effects of 7 days of heat stress on eight early lactating Holstein cows in climate-controlled chambers. The early lactating Holstein cows (42 ± 2 days in milk, 29.27 ± 0.38 kg/day milk yield, 1.21 ± 0.05 parity) were subjected to two 14-day periods, each consisting of 7 days of adaptation and 7 days of heat stress. Conditions were set to 22 °C and 50% humidity during adaptation, followed by heat stress periods with low-temperature, low-humidity (LTLH, 71 THI) and high-temperature, high-humidity (HTHH, 86 THI) treatments. Data from the last 7 days were analyzed using a mixed procedure in SAS. In the study, the HTHH group displayed marked physiological and biochemical changes on 14 days of heat stress exposure compared to the LTLH group. Firstly, the HTHH group's dry matter intake decreased by approximately 12% while their water intake increased by about 23%. Secondly, both milk yield and milk protein production in the HTHH group decreased by 10% and 20%, respectively. Thirdly, there was a reduction in white blood cells, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and platelets in the HTHH group, with concurrent increases in glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, and albumin concentrations. Additionally, the HTHH group exhibited elevated plasma concentrations of cortisol and haptoglobin. Moreover, the gene expression of heat shock protein 70 and heat shock protein 90 was significantly upregulated in the HTHH group's peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Lastly, key physiological indicators such as rectal temperature, heart rate, and skin temperature showed substantial elevations in the HTHH group. Considering the enormous negative effects observed in the analyzed blood metabolites, milk yield and compositions, and heat shock protein gene expression, early lactating Holstein cows were found to be more vulnerable to HTHH than LTLH over a 7 days exposure to heat stress.
Heat Stress Impacts on Lactating Cows Grazing Australian Summer Pastures on an Automatic Robotic Dairy

Abstract:The objective of this study was to measure the impacts of summer heat events on physiological parameters (body temperature, respiratory rate and panting scores), grazing behaviour and production parameters of lactating Holstein Friesian cows managed on an Automated Robotic Dairy during Australian summer. The severity of heat stress was measured using Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) and impacts of different THIs—low (≤72), moderate (73–82) and high (≥83)—on physiological responses and production performance were measured. There was a highly significant (p ≤ 0.01) effect of THI on respiratory rate (66.7, 84.7 and 109.1/min), panting scores (1.4, 1.9 and 2.3) and average body temperature of cows (38.4, 39.4 and 41.5 °C), which increased as THI increased from low to moderate to high over the summer. Average milk production parameters were also significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected by THI, such that daily milk production dropped by 14% from low to high THI, milk temperature and fat% increased by 3%, whilst protein% increased by 2%. The lactation stage of cow had no significant effect on physiological parameters but affected (p ≤ 0.05) average daily milk yield and milk solids. Highly significant (p ≤ 0.01) positive correlations were obtained between THI and milk temperature, fat% and protein% whilst the reverse was observed between THI and milk yield, feed intake and rumination time. Under moderate and high THI, most cows sought shade, spent more time around watering points and showed signs of distress (excessive salivation and open mouth panting). In view of the expected future increase in the frequency and severity of heat events, additional strategies including selection and breeding for thermotolerance and dietary interventions to improve resilience of cows need to be pursued.

Abstract:Global warming caused by climate change is a challenge for dairy farming, especially in sub-Saharan countries. Under high temperatures and relative humidity, lactating dairy cows suffer from heat stress. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects and relationship of heat stress (HS) measured by the temperature-humidity index (THI) regarding the physiological parameters and milk yield and composition of lactating Holstein Friesian crossbred dairy cows reared in the humid coastal region of Tanzania. A total of 29 lactating Holstein Friesian x Zebu crossbred dairy cows with 50% (HF50) and 75% (HF75) Holstein Friesian gene levels in the second and third months of lactation were used. The breed composition of Holstein Friesians was determined based on the animal recording system used at the Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI), Tanga. The data collected included the daily temperature, relative humidity, daily milk yield, and physiological parameters (core body temperature, rectal temperature, respiratory rate, and panting score). THI was calculated using the equation of the National Research Council. The THI values were categorized into three classes, i.e., low THI (76-78), moderate THI (79-81), and high THI (82-84). The effects of THI on the physiological parameters and milk yield and composition were assessed. The effects of the genotype, the parity, the lactation month, and the interaction of these parameters with THI on the milk yield, milk composition, and physiological parameters were also investigated. The results show that THI and its interaction with genotypes, parity, and the lactation month had a highly significant effect on all parameters. THI influenced (p ˂ 0.05) the average daily milk yield and milk fat %, protein %, lactose %, and solids-not-fat %. As the THI increased from moderate to high levels, the average daily milk yield declined from 3.49 ± 0.04 to 3.43 ± 0.05 L/day, while the fat % increased from 2.66 ± 0.05% to 3.04 ± 0.06% and the protein decreased from 3.15 ± 0.02% to 3.13 ± 0.03%. No decline in lactose % was observed, while the solid-not-fat % declined from 8.56 ± 0.08% to 8.55 ± 0.10% as the THI values increased from moderate to high. Also, the THI influenced physiological parameters (p ˂ 0.05). The core body temperature (CBT), rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR) and panting score (PS) increased from 35.60 ± 0.01 to 36.00 ± 0.01 °C, 38.03 ± 0.02 to 38.30 ± 0.02 °C, 62.53 ± 0.29 to 72.35 ± 0.28 breaths/min, and 1.35 ± 0.01 to 1.47 ± 0.09, respectively, as the THI increased from low to high. The THI showed a weak positive correlation with the average daily milk yield and fat percentage, whereas the protein, lactose, and solids-not-fat percentages showed negative relationships with THI (p ≤ 0.05). CBT, RT, RR, and PS showed positive relationships (p ≤ 0.05) with THI. These negative relationships indicate that there is an antagonistic correlation between sensitivity to HS and the level of production. It is concluded that the THI, the genotype, the parity, and the lactation month, along with their interactions with THI, significantly influenced the milk yield, milk composition, and physiological parameters of lactating Holstein Friesian dairy crosses at THI thresholds ranging from 77 to 84.
Seasonal effects on multiparous dairy cow behavior in early lactation

Abstract:Controlled studies have shown that heat stress abatement positively influences health, productivity, behavior, and reproductive performance of dairy cows during all stages of the lactation cycle. Based on previous findings, the present study focused on a better understanding of how seasonal changes affect the behavior of multiparous lactating dairy cows kept in typical free-stall housing with the objective to aid in the management of lactating cows exposed to variable environmental conditions. Automated monitoring devices (Nedap, the Netherlands) were used to assess behavioral activity of mature Holstein dairy cows during the "hot season" (HS; n = 19; July, August, and September) and the "cool season" (CS; n = 15; December, January, and February) under normal management conditions. Cows received a leg tag to measure daily lying time, and number of steps and standing bouts, and a neck tag to measure eating and rumination time. All cows were housed in sand-bedded freestall barns equipped with cooling systems (soakers and fans). Behavior, milk production and milk components were recorded for the first 9 wk of lactation after calving. Average temperature-humidity index (THI) was 78.2 ± 0.4 (± standard error) in the HS and 54.4 ± 0.2 in the CS. Fat-corrected milk yield was greater in the CS compared with HS during the first 5 wk of lactation. Milk protein percentage was lower in CS during the first 2 wk of lactation. In contrast with HS, milk fat percentage was greater in the CS. Compared with CS, overall, during HS cows spent less time eating, lying down, and tended to spend less time ruminating. In addition, exposure to high THI resulted in increases in standing bouts, and overall standing time in HS relative to CS. No differences in number of steps were observed between HS and CS. In summary, exposure to high THI during lactation seems to negatively affect the behavior and consequently the daily time budget of lactating Holstein cows, even under housing conditions with active cooling. A better understanding on how different seasons affect the daily time budget of lactating dairy cows may contribute to the development of more effective management strategies to decrease the negative effects of heat exposure.

Abstract:Abstract Background The global warming has become a worldwide problem affecting adversely the human being and the productivity of the livestock. This study aimed to investigate the effect of seasonal heat stress on the incidence of retained fetal membranes, oxidant-antioxidant biomarkers, haptoglobin, mineral status, milk production, inseminations/conception, estradiol, and days open of Holstein Friesian cows raised under Egyptian environmental conditions. Blood samples were collected one week before parturition and one day after parturition from two dairy farms. Total proteins, albumin, nitric oxide (NO), glutathione reduced (GSH), haptoglobin, estradiol, calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper and zinc were measured in the blood serum for cows delivered during the hot months (May to September) and the cold months (December to April). Results Cows delivered during the hot months had the highest prevalence of retained placenta and were older ( P = 0.0001) of mean parity (4.93 ± 2.24), required more services/conception ( P = 0.0001; 3.14 ± 1.20), produced higher ( P = 0.0001) milk yield/Ton (8.43 ± 1.29) compared to those retained during the cold months (8.00 ± 1.03). All cows retained their placentae had low estradiol (( P = 0.0001) compared to those dropped their placenta within the same season. All cows retained their fetal membranes had high NO ( P = 0.0002) but low GSH ( P = 0.008), and globulin ( P = 0.041). During the hot months, cows with retained placenta obtained low calcium, corrected calcium and calcium/phosphorus ratio. The type of placental drop and its interaction with season influenced ( P < 0.01) services /conception, milk yield, NO, estradiol and copper. Conclusions The retention of fetal membranes decreased the productive and reproductive parameters and its effects deteriorated reproduction and immunological status during the hot months.
Assessment of the effects of heat stress on the production of dairy cows by using two comfort thermal indices in Southern Chile

Abstract:Heat stress has been recognized as a serious problem in dairy farms around the world due to the increasing heat waves and higher genetic potential of dairy cows. In Chile, milk production is concentrated in the southern regions of the country, where animals graze all year around, consequently being exposed directly to environmental conditions. Nevertheless, there are few studies conducted in Chile that have evaluated at the commercial level the impact of heat stress on milk production. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of summer conditions, across periods, on the milk production of cows at different stages of lactation in a dairy farm located in Southern Chile. Daily meteorological and milk yield records of three summers from a dairy farm were collected to characterize the relationship between two thermal stress indices and milk yield. The thermal comfort indices used were the comprehensive climate index (CCI), and the adjusted temperature humidity index (THIadj). The average values of CCI and THIadj were dependent on the period (P < 0.0001) with maximum CCI of 40.2 °C, 31.7 °C, and 27.5 °C for the 2012-2013, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017 periods, respectively. A similar response was recorded when THIadj was used (85.5, 78.0, and 73.9, respectively). In the 2012-2013 summer, 44.4% of the days presented conditions of heat stress (CCI ≥23), a value that fell to 26.7% in the summer of 2015-2016 and only 5.6% in the 2016-2017. On the opposite, when the THIadj was used, these values were 50%, 48.9%, and 5.6%, respectively. In conclusion, both comfort thermal indices are good tools to determine the risk of thermal stress in dairy cows, with a large variation between the three summer periods but also between indices. Likewise, cows in the early and mid-lactation periods are more affected in terms of milk yield.
