Abstract:Our basic understanding of sodium mechanisms provides unique insights into epithelial transport processes, and unusual clinical syndromes can arise from mutations of these ion transporters. These genetic disorders affect sodium balance, with both sodium-retaining and sodium-wasting conditions being the consequence. A major focus of such studies has been the epithelial sodium channel, which can be activated by mutations in the channel subunits or mineralocorticoid receptor, and changes in the response to or production of mineralocorticoids. As a result, there are now clearly defined Mendelian syndromes in which epithelial sodium channel activity is ‘dysregulated’, with the subsequent development of systemic hypertension with suppressed plasma renin activity that can be attributed to a primary renal mechanism. Applying these insights to the far more common disorder of low renin hypertension may shed new light on the underlying pathophysiology of this common form of human hypertension, and more clearly define the interactions of dietary constituents such as sodium and potassium in the regulation of blood pressure.

Abstract:Differential diagnosis is sometimes difficult in practical psychiatric settings, in terms of using the current diagnostic system based on presenting symptoms and signs. The creation of a novel diagnostic system using objective biomarkers is expected to take place. Neuroimaging studies and others reported that subcortical brain structures are the hubs for various psycho-behavioral functions, while there are so far no neuroimaging data-driven clinical criteria overcoming limitations of the current diagnostic system, which would reflect cognitive/social functioning. Prior to the main analysis, we conducted a large-scale multisite study of subcortical volumetric and lateralization alterations in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and autism spectrum disorder using T1-weighted images of 5604 subjects (3078 controls and 2526 patients). We demonstrated larger lateral ventricles volume in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, smaller hippocampus volume in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia-specific smaller amygdala, thalamus, and accumbens volumes and larger caudate, putamen, and pallidum volumes. In addition, we observed a leftward alteration of lateralization for pallidum volume specifically in schizophrenia. Moreover, as our main objective, we clustered the 5,604 subjects based on subcortical volumes, and explored whether data-driven clustering results can explain cognitive/social functioning in the subcohorts. We showed a four-biotype classification, namely extremely (Brain Biotype [BB] 1) and moderately smaller limbic regions (BB2), larger basal ganglia (BB3), and normal volumes (BB4), being associated with cognitive/social functioning. Specifically, BB1 and BB2-3 were associated with severe and mild cognitive/social impairment, respectively, while BB4 was characterized by normal cognitive/social functioning. Our results may lead to the future creation of novel biological data-driven psychiatric diagnostic criteria, which may be expected to be useful for prediction or therapeutic selection.
Identifying Subgroups of Major Depressive Disorder Using Brain Structural Covariance Networks and Mapping of Associated Clinical and Cognitive Variables

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Identifying data-driven subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD) holds promise for parsing the heterogeneity of MDD in a neurobiologically informed way. However, limited studies have used brain structural covariance networks (SCNs) for subtyping MDD. METHODS: This study included 145 unmedicated patients with MDD and 206 demographically matched healthy control subjects, who underwent a structural magnetic resonance imaging scan and a comprehensive neurocognitive battery. Patterns of structural covariance were identified using source-based morphometry across both patients with MDD and healthy control subjects. K-means clustering algorithms were applied on dysregulated structural networks in MDD to identify potential MDD subtypes. Finally, clinical and neurocognitive measures were compared between identified subgroups to elucidate the profile of these MDD subtypes. RESULTS: Source-based morphometry across all individuals identified 28 whole-brain SCNs that encompassed the prefrontal, anterior cingulate, and orbitofrontal cortices; basal ganglia; and cerebellar, visual, and motor regions. Compared with healthy control subjects, individuals with MDD showed lower structural network integrity in three networks including default mode, ventromedial prefrontal cortical, and salience networks. Clustering analysis revealed two MDD subtypes based on the patterns of structural network abnormalities in these three networks. Further profiling revealed that patients in subtype 1 had younger age of onset and more symptom severity as well as greater deficits in cognitive performance than patients in subtype 2. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, we identified two MDD subtypes based on SCNs that differed in their clinical and cognitive profile. Our results represent a proof-of-concept framework for leveraging these large-scale SCNs to parse heterogeneity in MDD.

Abstract:Importance: Large-scale neuroimaging studies have revealed group differences in cortical thickness across many psychiatric disorders. The underlying neurobiology behind these differences is not well understood. Objective: To determine neurobiologic correlates of group differences in cortical thickness between cases and controls in 6 disorders: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. Design, setting, and participants: Profiles of group differences in cortical thickness between cases and controls were generated using T1-weighted magnetic resonance images. Similarity between interregional profiles of cell-specific gene expression and those in the group differences in cortical thickness were investigated in each disorder. Next, principal component analysis was used to reveal a shared profile of group difference in thickness across the disorders. Analysis for gene coexpression, clustering, and enrichment for genes associated with these disorders were conducted. Data analysis was conducted between June and December 2019. The analysis included 145 cohorts across 6 psychiatric disorders drawn from the ENIGMA consortium. The numbers of cases and controls in each of the 6 disorders were as follows: ADHD: 1814 and 1602; ASD: 1748 and 1770; BD: 1547 and 3405; MDD: 2658 and 3572; OCD: 2266 and 2007; and schizophrenia: 2688 and 3244. Main outcomes and measures: Interregional profiles of group difference in cortical thickness between cases and controls. Results: A total of 12 721 cases and 15 600 controls, ranging from ages 2 to 89 years, were included in this study. Interregional profiles of group differences in cortical thickness for each of the 6 psychiatric disorders were associated with profiles of gene expression specific to pyramidal (CA1) cells, astrocytes (except for BD), and microglia (except for OCD); collectively, gene-expression profiles of the 3 cell types explain between 25% and 54% of variance in interregional profiles of group differences in cortical thickness. Principal component analysis revealed a shared profile of difference in cortical thickness across the 6 disorders (48% variance explained); interregional profile of this principal component 1 was associated with that of the pyramidal-cell gene expression (explaining 56% of interregional variation). Coexpression analyses of these genes revealed 2 clusters: (1) a prenatal cluster enriched with genes involved in neurodevelopmental (axon guidance) processes and (2) a postnatal cluster enriched with genes involved in synaptic activity and plasticity-related processes. These clusters were enriched with genes associated with all 6 psychiatric disorders. Conclusions and relevance: In this study, shared neurobiologic processes were associated with differences in cortical thickness across multiple psychiatric disorders. These processes implicate a common role of prenatal development and postnatal functioning of the cerebral cortex in these disorders.

Abstract:Recent studies proposed a general psychopathology factor underlying common comorbidities among psychiatric disorders. However, its neurobiological mechanisms and generalizability remain elusive. In this study, we used a large longitudinal neuroimaging cohort from adolescence to young adulthood (IMAGEN) to define a neuropsychopathological (NP) factor across externalizing and internalizing symptoms using multitask connectomes. We demonstrate that this NP factor might represent a unified, genetically determined, delayed development of the prefrontal cortex that further leads to poor executive function. We also show this NP factor to be reproducible in multiple developmental periods, from preadolescence to early adulthood, and generalizable to the resting-state connectome and clinical samples (the ADHD-200 Sample and the Stratify Project). In conclusion, we identify a reproducible and general neural basis underlying symptoms of multiple mental health disorders, bridging multidimensional evidence from behavioral, neuroimaging and genetic substrates. These findings may help to develop new therapeutic interventions for psychiatric comorbidities.

Abstract:Introduction: Identifying neurobiological differences between patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and healthy individuals has been a mainstay of clinical neuroscience for decades. However, recent meta- and mega-analyses have raised concerns regarding the replicability and clinical relevance of brain alterations in depression. Methods: Here, we systematically investigate healthy controls and MDD patients across a comprehensive range of modalities including structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging, functional task-based and resting-state MRI under near-ideal conditions. To this end, we quantify the upper bounds of univariate effect sizes, predictive utility, and distributional dissimilarity in a fully harmonized cohort of N=1,809 participants. We compare the results to an MDD polygenic risk score (PRS) and environmental variables. Results: The upper bound of the effect sizes range from partial eta squared = .004 to .017, distributions overlap between 89% and 95%, with classification accuracies ranging between 54% and 55% across neuroimaging modalities. This pattern remains virtually unchanged when considering only acutely or chronically depressed patients. Differences are comparable to those found for PRS, but substantially smaller than for environmental variables. Discussion: We provide a large-scale, multimodal analysis of univariate biological differences between MDD patients and controls and show that even under near-ideal conditions and for maximum biological differences, deviations are extremely small and similarity dominates. We sketch an agenda for a new focus of future research in biological psychiatry facilitating quantitative, theory-driven research, an emphasis on computational psychiatry and multivariate machine learning approaches, as well as the utilization of ecologically valid phenotyping.

Abstract:Background Mental disorders, including depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia, share a common neuropathy of disturbed large-scale coordinated brain maturation. However, high-interindividual heterogeneity hinders the identification of shared and distinct patterns of brain network abnormalities across mental disorders. This study aimed to identify shared and distinct patterns of altered structural covariance across mental disorders. Methods Subject-level structural covariance aberrance in patients with mental disorders was investigated using individualized differential structural covariance network. This method inferred structural covariance aberrance at the individual level by measuring the degree of structural covariance in patients deviating from matched healthy controls (HCs). T1-weighted anatomical images of 513 participants (105, 98, 190 participants with depression, OCD and schizophrenia, respectively, and 130 age- and sex-matched HCs) were acquired and analyzed. Results Patients with mental disorders exhibited notable heterogeneity in terms of altered edges, which were otherwise obscured by group-level analysis. The three disorders shared high difference variability in edges attached to the frontal network and the subcortical-cerebellum network, and they also exhibited disease-specific variability distributions. Despite notable variability, patients with the same disorder shared disease-specific groups of altered edges. Specifically, depression was characterized by altered edges attached to the subcortical-cerebellum network; OCD, by altered edges linking the subcortical-cerebellum and motor networks; and schizophrenia, by altered edges related to the frontal network. Conclusions These results have potential implications for understanding heterogeneity and facilitating personalized diagnosis and interventions for mental disorders.

Abstract:Background: Efforts to develop neuroimaging-based biomarkers in major depressive disorder (MDD), at the individual level, have been limited to date. As diagnostic criteria are currently symptom-based, MDD is conceptualized as a disorder rather than a disease with a known etiology; further, neural measures are often confounded by medication status and heterogeneous symptom states. Methods: We describe a consortium to quantify neuroanatomical and neurofunctional heterogeneity via the dimensions of novel multivariate coordinate system (COORDINATE-MDD). Utilizing imaging harmonization and machine learning methods in a large cohort of medication-free, deeply phenotyped MDD participants, patterns of brain alteration are defined in replicable and neurobiologically-based dimensions and offer the potential to predict treatment response at the individual level. International datasets are being shared from multi-ethnic community populations, first episode and recurrent MDD, which are medication-free, in a current depressive episode with prospective longitudinal treatment outcomes and in remission. Neuroimaging data consist of de-identified, individual, structural MRI and resting-state functional MRI with additional positron emission tomography (PET) data at specific sites. State-of-the-art analytic methods include automated image processing for extraction of anatomical and functional imaging variables, statistical harmonization of imaging variables to account for site and scanner variations, and semi-supervised machine learning methods that identify dominant patterns associated with MDD from neural structure and function in healthy participants. Results: We are applying an iterative process by defining the neural dimensions that characterise deeply phenotyped samples and then testing the dimensions in novel samples to assess specificity and reliability. Crucially, we aim to use machine learning methods to identify novel predictors of treatment response based on prospective longitudinal treatment outcome data, and we can externally validate the dimensions in fully independent sites. Conclusion: We describe the consortium, imaging protocols and analytics using preliminary results. Our findings thus far demonstrate how datasets across many sites can be harmonized and constructively pooled to enable execution of this large-scale project.

Abstract:Current psychiatric diagnoses are not defined by neurobiological measures which hinders the development of therapies targeting mechanisms underlying mental illness . Research confined to diagnostic boundaries yields heterogeneous biological results, whereas transdiagnostic studies often investigate individual symptoms in isolation. There is currently no paradigm available to comprehensively investigate the relationship between different clinical symptoms, individual disorders, and the underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Here, we propose a framework that groups clinical symptoms derived from ICD-10/DSM-V according to shared brain mechanisms defined by brain structure, function, and connectivity. The reassembly of existing ICD-10/DSM-5 symptoms reveal six cross-diagnostic psychopathology scores related to mania symptoms, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, stress symptoms, eating pathology, and fear symptoms. They were consistently associated with multimodal neuroimaging components in the training sample of young adults aged 23, the independent test sample aged 23, participants aged 14 and 19 years, and in psychiatric patients. The identification of symptom groups of mental illness robustly defined by precisely characterized brain mechanisms enables the development of a psychiatric nosology based upon quantifiable neurobiological measures. As the identified symptom groups align well with existing diagnostic categories, our framework is directly applicable to clinical research and patient care.

Abstract:Despite decades of research, the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) is still not well understood. Structural brain differences have been associated with BD, but results from neuroimaging studies have been inconsistent. To address this, we performed the largest study to date of cortical gray matter thickness and surface area measures from brain magnetic resonance imaging scans of 6503 individuals including 1837 unrelated adults with BD and 2582 unrelated healthy controls for group differences while also examining the effects of commonly prescribed medications, age of illness onset, history of psychosis, mood state, age and sex differences on cortical regions. In BD, cortical gray matter was thinner in frontal, temporal and parietal regions of both brain hemispheres. BD had the strongest effects on left pars opercularis (Cohen’s d=−0.293; P=1.71 × 10−21), left fusiform gyrus (d=−0.288; P=8.25 × 10−21) and left rostral middle frontal cortex (d=−0.276; P=2.99 × 10−19). Longer duration of illness (after accounting for age at the time of scanning) was associated with reduced cortical thickness in frontal, medial parietal and occipital regions. We found that several commonly prescribed medications, including lithium, antiepileptic and antipsychotic treatment showed significant associations with cortical thickness and surface area, even after accounting for patients who received multiple medications. We found evidence of reduced cortical surface area associated with a history of psychosis but no associations with mood state at the time of scanning. Our analysis revealed previously undetected associations and provides an extensive analysis of potential confounding variables in neuroimaging studies of BD.

Abstract:Background: The clinical presentation of common symptoms during depressive episodes in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) poses challenges for accurate diagnosis. Disorder-specific neuroanatomical features may aid the development of reliable discrimination between these two clinical conditions.Methods: For our sample of 16 BD patients, 19 MDD patients and 29 healthy volunteers, we adopted vertex-wise cortical based brain imaging techniques to examine cortical thickness and surface area, two components of cortical volume with distinct genetic determinants. Based on specific characteristics of neuroanatomical features, we then used support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to discriminate between patients with BD and MDD.Results: Compared to MDD patients, BD patients showed significantly larger cortical surface area in the left bankssts, precuneus, precentral, inferior parietal, superior parietal and the right middle temporal gyri. In addition, larger volumes of subcortical regions were found in BD patients. In SVM discriminative analyses, the overall accuracy was 74.3 %, with a sensitivity of 62.5 % and a specificity of 84.2 % (p = 0.028). Compared to controls, larger surface area in the temporo-parietal regions were observed in BD patients, and thinner cortices in fronto-temporal regions were observed in MDD patients, especially in the medial orbito-frontal area.Conclusions: These findings have demonstrated distinct spatially distributed variations in cortical thickness and surface area in patients with BD and MDD, suggesting potentially varying etiological and neuropathological processes in these two conditions. The employment of multimodal classification on disorder-specific biological features has shed light to the development of potential classification tools that could aid diagnostic decisions.

Abstract:<p>Childhood and adolescence represent a time notable for the emergence of many psychiatric disorders, where comorbidity and co-occurrence of symptoms are well-documented. However, it remains unclear whether there exists common brain structural disturbance across psychiatric disorders in youth. Here, we conduct a transdiagnostic meta-analysis of 132 structural neuroimaging experiments in youth consisting of multiple psychiatric diagnoses. Compared to healthy peers, youth psychiatric disorders are characterized by reduced grey matter volume (GMV) of amygdala and lateral orbitofrontal cortex and enhanced GMV of ventromedial prefrontal cortex and precuneus. These four regions were then subjected to functional connectivity and decoding analyses based on healthy participant datasets, allowing for a data-driven quantitative inference on psychophysiological functions. These regions and their networks mapped onto systems implicated in negative valence, positive valence, as well as social and cognitive functioning. Together, our findings are consistent with transdiagnostic models of psychopathology, uncovering common structural disturbance across youth psychiatric disorders, potentially reflecting an intermediate transdiagnostic phenotype in association with broad dimensions of youth psychopathology.</p>

Abstract:Background: Inter-individual variability in neurobiological and clinical characteristics in mental illness is often overlooked by classical group-mean case-control studies. Studies using normative modelling to infer person-specific deviations of grey matter volume have indicated that group means are not representative of most individuals. The extent to which this variability is present in white matter morphometry, which is integral to brain function, remains unclear. Methods: We applied Warped Bayesian Linear Regression normative models to T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data and mapped inter-individual variability in person-specific white matter volume deviations in 1,294 cases (58% male) diagnosed with one of six disorders (attention-deficit/hyperactivity, autism, bipolar, major depressive, obsessive-compulsive and schizophrenia) and 1,465 matched controls (54% male) recruited across 25 scan sites. We developed a framework to characterize deviation heterogeneity at multiple spatial scales, from individual voxels, through inter-regional connections, specific brain regions, and spatially extended brain networks. Results: The specific locations of white matter volume deviations were highly heterogeneous across participants, affecting the same voxel in fewer than 8% of individuals with the same diagnosis. For autism and schizophrenia, negative deviations (i.e., areas where volume is lower than normative expectations) aggregated into common tracts, regions and large-scale networks in up to 35% of individuals. Conclusions: The prevalence of white matter volume deviations was lower than previously observed in grey matter, and the specific location of these deviations was highly heterogeneous when considering voxel-wise spatial resolution. Evidence of aggregation within common pathways and networks was apparent in schizophrenia and autism but not other disorders.

Abstract:Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe and common mental illness. The first-episode drugs-naive MDD (FEDN-MDD) patients, who have not undergone medication intervention, contribute to understanding the biological basis of MDD. Multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging can provide a comprehensive understanding of brain functional and structural abnormalities in MDD. However, most MDD studies use single-modal, small-scale MRI data. And several multimodal studies of MDD are limited to simple linear combinations of functional and structural features. Methods: We screened a large sample of FEDN-MDD patients and healthy controlsmultimodal MRI data. Extracting the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) feature from functional magnetic resonance imaging and the gray matter volume (GMV) feature from structural magnetic resonance imaging. The mCCA-jICA method was used to integrate these two modal features to investigate the functional-structural co-variation abnormalities in MDD. To validate the stability of the extracted functional-structural covariant abnormalities features, we apply them to identify FEDN-MDD patients. Results: The results show that compared to healthy controls, FEDN-MDD patients exhibit joint group-discriminative independent component and modality-specific group-discriminative independent component, suggesting functional-structural covariant abnormalities in MDD patients. Using lightGBM classifier, we achieve a classification accuracy of 99.84 %. Limitation: We use GMV and fALFF for multimodal fusion shows promise, but requires further validation with other datasets and exploration of additional multimodal features. Conclusions: This may indicate that multimodal fusion features can effectively explore information between different modalities and can accurately identify FEDN-MDD patients, suggesting their potential as multimodal brain imaging biomarkers for MDD.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Lateralized dysfunction has been suggested in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, it is currently unclear whether OCD is characterized by abnormal patterns of brain structural asymmetry. Here we carried out what is by far the largest study of brain structural asymmetry in OCD. METHODS: We studied a collection of 16 pediatric datasets (501 patients with OCD and 439 healthy control subjects), as well as 30 adult datasets (1777 patients and 1654 control subjects) from the OCD Working Group within the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium. Asymmetries of the volumes of subcortical structures, and of measures of regional cortical thickness and surface areas, were assessed based on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans, using harmonized image analysis and quality control protocols. We investigated possible alterations of brain asymmetry in patients with OCD. We also explored potential associations of asymmetry with specific aspects of the disorder and medication status. RESULTS: In the pediatric datasets, the largest case-control differences were observed for volume asymmetry of the thalamus (more leftward; Cohen's d = 0.19) and the pallidum (less leftward; d = -20.21). Additional analyses suggested putative links between these asymmetry patterns and medication status, OCD severity, or anxiety and depression comorbidities. No significant case-control differences were found in the adult datasets. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest subtle changes of the average asymmetry of subcortical structures in pediatric OCD, which are not detectable in adults with the disorder. These findings may reflect altered neurodevelopmental processes in OCD.

Abstract:Converging evidence suggests that major depressive disorder (MDD) affects multiple large-scale brain networks. Analyses of the correlation or covariance of regional brain structure and function applied to structural and functional MRI data may provide insights into systems-level organization and structure-to-function correlations in the brain in MDD. This study applied tensor-based morphometry and intrinsic connectivity distribution to identify regions of altered volume and intrinsic functional connectivity in data from unmedicated individuals with MDD (n=17) and healthy comparison participants (HC, n=20). These regions were then used as seeds for exploratory anatomical covariance and connectivity analyses. Reduction in volume in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and lower structural covariance between the ACC and the cerebellum were observed in the MDD group. Additionally, individuals with MDD had significantly lower whole-brain intrinsic functional connectivity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). This mPFC region showed altered connectivity to the ventral lateral PFC (vlPFC) and local circuitry in MDD. Global connectivity in the ACC was negatively correlated with reported depressive symptomatology. The mPFC–vlPFC connectivity was positively correlated with depressive symptoms. Finally, we observed increased structure-to-function correlation in the PFC/ACC in the MDD group. Although across all analysis methods and modalities alterations in the PFC/ACC were a common finding, each modality and method detected alterations in subregions belonging to distinct large-scale brain networks. These exploratory results support the hypothesis that MDD is a systems level disorder affecting multiple brain networks located in the PFC and provide new insights into the pathophysiology of this disorder.

Abstract:Machine learning can be used to define subtypes of psychiatric conditions based on shared biological foundations of mental disorders. Here we analyzed cross-sectional brain images from 4,222 individuals with schizophrenia and 7038 healthy subjects pooled across 41 international cohorts from the ENIGMA, non-ENIGMA cohorts and public datasets. Using the Subtype and Stage Inference (SuStaIn) algorithm, we identify two distinct neurostructural subgroups by mapping the spatial and temporal 'trajectory' of gray matter change in schizophrenia. Subgroup 1 was characterized by an early cortical-predominant loss with enlarged striatum, whereas subgroup 2 displayed an early subcortical-predominant loss in the hippocampus, striatum and other subcortical regions. We confirmed the reproducibility of the two neurostructural subtypes across various sample sites, including Europe, North America and East Asia. This imaging-based taxonomy holds the potential to identify individuals with shared neurobiological attributes, thereby suggesting the viability of redefining existing disorder constructs based on biological factors.

Abstract:Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) have both common and distinct clinical features, that pose both conceptual challenges in terms of their diagnostic boundaries and practical difficulties in optimizing treatment. Multivariate machine learning techniques offer new avenues for exploring these boundaries based on clinical neuroanatomical features. Brain structural data were obtained at 3 T from a sample of 90 patients with BD, 189 patients with MDD, and 162 healthy individuals. We applied sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis (s-PLS-DA) to identify clinical and brain structural features that may discriminate between the two clinical groups, and heterogeneity through discriminative analysis (HYDRA) to detect patient subgroups with reference to healthy individuals. Two clinical dimensions differentiated BD from MDD (area under the curve: 0.76, P < 0.001); one dimension emphasized disease severity as well as irritability, agitation, anxiety and flight of ideas and the other emphasized mostly elevated mood. Brain structural features could not distinguish between the two disorders. HYDRA classified patients in two clusters that differed in global and regional cortical thickness, the distribution proportion of BD and MDD and positive family history of psychiatric disorders. Clinical features remain the most reliable discriminant attributed of BD and MDD depression. The brain structural findings suggests that biological partitions of patients with mood disorders are likely to lead to the identification of subgroups, that transcend current diagnostic divisions into BD and MDD and are more likely to be aligned with underlying genetic variation. These results set the foundation for future studies to enhance our understanding of brain–behavior relationships in mood disorders.

Abstract:The arrangement of water molecules at charged aqueous interfaces is an important question in biology, electrochemistry, and geochemistry. Theoretical studies suggest that the molecules become arranged in several layers adjacent to a solid interface. Using atomic force microscopy we have measured the water dielectric-permittivity profile perpendicular to mica surfaces. The measured variable permittivity profile starting at epsilon approximately 4 at the interface and increasing to epsilon=80 about 10 nm from the surface suggests a reorientation of water molecule dipoles in the presence of the mica interfacial charge.

Abstract:In compression asphyxia, respiration is stopped by external forces on the body. It is usually due to an external force compressing the trunk such as a heavy weight on the chest or abdomen and is associated with internal injuries. In present case, the victim was trapped and crushed under the falling persons from a human pyramid formation for a “Dahi Handi” festival. There was neither any severe blunt force injury nor any significant pathological natural disease contributing to the cause of death. The victim was unable to remove himself from the situation because his cognitive responses and coordination were impaired due to alcohol intake. The victim died from asphyxia due to compression of his chest and abdomen. Compression asphyxia resulting from the collapse of a human pyramid and the dynamics of its impact force in these circumstances is very rare and is not reported previously to the best of our knowledge.
