Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare differences in socio-demographic characteristics, depression, and life satisfaction between the elderly participating and the non-participating in economic activities, and to identify variables that affect participation in economic activities in old age. For the purpose, we conducted Chi-square test, t-Test, Pearson correlation analysis, and Binomial logistic regression analysis on the raw data of 10,097 people over 65 years old from 『Survey on the Status of the Elderly in 2020』. The main results were as follows : 1) There were higher proportion of subjects male, younger, higher educated, with a spouse, with higher income, with good subjective health, and living with a spouse in the participating group than in the non-participating economic activity group. In addition, the participating group in economic activities had higher satisfaction with health status, economic status, social-leisure-cultural activities, relationships with friends or community, and life as a whole, and lower depression. 2) As a result of the binomial logistic regression analysis, the model was statistically significant and had an explanatory power of 24.0%. All variables except satisfaction with economic status were significant factors influencing participation in economic activities in old age. The elderly male, younger, less-educated, living alone, higher-income, higher satisfaction with health status and relationships with friends or community, lower satisfaction with social-leisure-cultural activities and life as a whole, and with lower depression were more likely to participate in economic activities. Finally, based on the results of this study, several limitations and suggestions for follow-up research and policy direction were added.
The Impact of Social Participation Activities on the Relationship between Depression and Age Awareness in the Elderly

Abstract:Objective : We aim to explore the impact of social participation activities on the relationship between depression and age perception in the elderly. Methods : This study used data from the 2020 Survey on the Status of the Elderly, and a total of 10,097 people responded to the survey by sampling the survey districts and the number of households. The dependent variable was the perception of the elderly's age, the independent variable was the depression score, and the control variable was social participation. Statistical analysis was performed through regression analysis. Considering that the independent variable in this study was a continuous variable and the control variable was a categorical variable, an interaction term was entered into the regression equation for analysis. Results : As a result of the analysis, social activity participation and depression were statistically significant (F(3, 10093)=1308.39, p<.001), and the explanatory power of the model was approximately 28% (adjusted R2=0.28). When the interaction term was added, the explanatory power increased by 0.5%, and the increase in explanatory power was statistically significant (F(2,10094)=1914.99, p<.001). In addition, the effect of participation in social activities lowers the perception of the elderly's age. The more depressed one is, the higher the perception of the elderly's age, but participation in social activities has a positive effect on lowering the perception of the elderly's age (b=-0.14). Conclusion : Participation in social activities plays an important role in lowering depression and age awareness among the elderly and strengthening the positive social self of the elderly. Based on the research results, this study needs to emphasize the importance of policies and programs that encourage and support participation in social activities in old age, and support positive age perception among older people at the personal and social levels. It is expected that these results can be used as basic data to emphasize the importance of social activity participation projects for the elderly and to change the age standards for the elderly.

Abstract:Physical activity has been recommended to general population for preventing depressive symptoms. However, only few prospective studies focused on the association between the domain-specific physical activity levels and risk of depressive symptoms. PURPOSE: To investigate the prospective association between domain-specific physical activity and depressive symptoms among Japanese older people. METHODS: In this study, participants comprised 365 (169 men) community-dwelling older individuals aged ≥70 years, who were living in the Tsurugaya area of Sendai, Japan. These participants did not have depressive symptoms at baseline. Depressive state was evaluated by a short version of Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and a GDS-15 score ≥6 was defined as depressive symptoms. Furthermore, a valid questionnaire was used to assess domain-specific physical activity. Leisure-time physical activity levels by estimating metabolic equivalents (METs) hours/day based on frequency and duration of walking, brisk walking, moderate exercise, and strenuous exercise. METs of physical activity in other domains (occupational, domestic, commuting) were calculated based on the numbers of hours spent at different levels of intensity (sitting, standing, walking, strenuous work). Associations between physical activity and depressive symptoms were examined by multiple regression analysis. Covariates included sex, age, body mass index, educational levels, living status, smoking status, drinking status, sleep duration, and cognitive function. Data were expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that tertiles of leisure-time physical activity were inversely associated with depressive symptoms during 10-years follow-up period (OR [95% CI]: T2, 0.97 [0.54−1.76]; T3, 0.42 [0.21−0.85]; P for trend = 0.019). Similarly, high levels of physical activity in other domains were also associated with decreased incidence of depressive symptoms (OR [95% CI]: T2, 0.73 [0.40−1.36]; T3, 0.52 [0.27−0.99]; P for trend = 0.045). CONCLUSION: This long-term prospective study demonstrated that the both leisure-time and non-leisure-time (occupational, domestic, commuting) physical activity may be preventive factors for depressive symptoms in older adults.

Abstract:Formal social participation significantly impacts health and well-being, potentially mitigating cognitive decline, although not consistently across all studies. Existing research often focuses solely on baseline participation levels, and age-related differences have primarily been explored among the Asian population. Therefore, this longitudinal study aims to assess the association between formal social participation and cognition across different age groups in individuals aged 50+ living in Europe and Israel, while capturing the dynamic nature of formal social participation. We use data from three waves (four, six, and eight) of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), comprising 85,601 respondents. Linear mixed-effects models were applied. The results show that participation in formal social activities mitigates cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults, especially among those aged 70 to 79 and 80+. These findings support the need for social policies promoting formal social activities, for lasting cognitive health benefits.

Abstract:Background: Cognitive decline is a major public health concern worldwide and it is vital to identify and better understand effective population-based means to improve cognitive performance in old age. The current study set out to examine the links between accelerometer-based physical activity with cognitive performance in later life, as well the indirect pathways through one's social network contacts and depression. Method: We used data from 855 participants aged 50 and above who took part in a cross-sectional accelerometer study as part of the Survey of Ageing, Retirement and Health (SHARE). Cognitive function was measured as an average score of fluency, immediate and delayed recall tests, social contacts were the average contact frequency with members of the social support network, and depression was the Euro-D summary score of depressive symptoms. A multiple mediation analysis was conducted to test the direct and indirect associations between total physical activity (intensity gradient) and cognitive function, as well as the mediation of this association by social contacts and depressive symptoms. Results: Intensity of physical activity was directly related to better cognitive performance (B = 0.170, p = 0.007). The association was partially mediated by social contacts (B = 0.022, 95% CI 0.005, 0.046) and depressive symptoms (B = 0.009, 95% CI 0.009, 0.025), such that total physical activity was linked to cognitive health via more frequent contacts with network members and low depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Practitioners might consider encouraging a physically active lifestyle that involves social interactions to support better cognitive aging and mental health.

Abstract:Introduction: The world population is rapidly aging, and depression mainly affects middle-aged and older adults with chronic diseases and cognitive impairments. The sample for this study was obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) public database. The sample size for inclusion was 12,767. There were 6,773 females and 5,994 males, with an overall low level of education. This study aims to provide a theoretical and practical reference basis for the clinical non-pharmacological treatment of depression in middle-aged and older adults (age ≥ 50 years) with chronic diseases. Additionally, the study seeks to promote the development of mental health interventions for middle-aged and older adults (age ≥ 50 years) with chronic diseases, ultimately enhancing the sense of well-being and quality of life for this demographic. Methods: Cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms of the study participants were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination Scale (MMSE) and the short version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). Results and discussion: Binary logistic regression results showed that among middle-aged and older adults (age ≥ 50 years) with chronic diseases, participation in physical activity [OR = 1.397; 95% CI (1.181–1.651); p < 0.05] was more effective than participation in social activities [OR = 0.997; 95% CI (0.924–1.076); p < 0.05] for preventing depression. Those with cognitive impairment [OR = 1.206; 95% CI (1.089–1.335); p < 0.05] were more likely to experience depression than those without cognitive impairment. Activity participation (physical activity and social activity) had a more significant effect on mild and moderate depression compared to no depression, and cognitive level had a more pronounced effect on moderate depression [OR = 1.491; 95% CI (1.278–1.740); p < 0.05] and major depression [OR = 2.231; 95% CI (1.282–3.884); p < 0.05]. Within the specific cohort of middle-aged and older adults (age ≥ 50 years) with chronic diseases, both activity participation and cognitive level exert a significant influence on the prevention and intervention of depression. Engagement in physical activity, participation in social activities, and enhanced cognitive functioning emerged as protective factors against depression. Therefore, the policy-maker should strengthen the prevention and treatment of depression in a comprehensive manner through the promotion of physical and social activities and the enhancement of cognitive level, so as to safeguard the mental health of middle-aged and older adults with chronic diseases.

Abstract:Background Depression is one of the greatest public health problems worldwide. The potential benefit of social participation (SP) on mental health has been widely acknowledged. Nevertheless, a few studies have used propensity score matching (PSM) to reduce the influence of data bias and confounding variables. This study explored the effect of social participation on depression among middle-aged and older Chinese persons through a PSM method, considering the frequency, type, and quantity of SP. Effects were compared among different age groups, genders, and places of residence. Methods The datasets were obtained from the 2018 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. A total of 9,404 respondents aged 45 and above were included in the study. PSM and ordinary least squares methods were used to estimate the effect of social participation on depression. Results PSM estimation results showed that SP had a significantly positive effect on decreasing depression scores ( p < 0.001) by 0.875–0.898 compared with persons without SP. All types of SP had a significantly positive effect ( p < 0.001), and participating in community activities had the largest effect (β = −1.549 to −1.788, p < 0.001). Higher frequency of participation and more types of SP promoted lower depression scores; subgroup analyses revealed that the promotion effect was significantly greater among women, those aged ≥75 years, and those living in urban areas. Conclusion PSM indicated that SP could alleviate the depression of middle-aged and older Chinese persons. Targeted measures should be adopted to promote SP and thereby improve mental health and promote healthy and active aging.

Toxoplasmosis : Role of Cytokines in Disease Modulation & Tissue Pathology

Abstract:Toxoplasmosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii parasite has a world wide distribution effecting one third of the world population. A number of parasite and host factors determine the outcome of prevalence, disease severity and tissue damage ranging from asymptomatic self limiting infection in health adults to serious destructive inflammatory consequences in congenitally infected infants and in individuals with a weakened immune system. There is strong experimental evidence that the cytokines play a major role in the pathogenesis of Toxoplasma gondii and manipulation of these cytokines can put forth a beneficial or damaging effect on the host and thus modulate the disease pathology. The importance of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) was clearly demonstrated when the neutralization of interleukin (IL) IL-12 and of IFN-γ using anti-IFN-γ & anti-IL-12 monoclonal antibodies (MAb) resulted in reactivation and loss of control on the parasite’s multiplication leading to disease. Cytokine IL-27 was deemed as an endogenous suppresser on IL-17, the inflammatory cytokine that is capable of enhancing the inflammatory response in the brain. Although Toxoplasma is an intracellular pathogen thereby requiring a cell mediated immune response from the host, the cytokine IL-10 protects the infected mice from an exaggerated cellular immune response by inhibiting the production of pro inflammatory cytokines: IL12, IFN-γ, and TNF-β. Following Toxoplasma infection the host triggers a sequential balanced cytokine response to limit the infection and the disease pathology. However, cytokines can sometimes exert a negative effect on the host and augment the disease leading to severe irreversible tissue damage.
Aging alone and financial insecurity predict depression: a path analysis of objective and subjective indices

Abstract:Objectives: This study draws on conservation of resources theory and transactional stress theory to guide our understanding of how social isolation, financial insecurity, and social support serve as a balance of both risk and protection for late-life depression. Methods: Data were from the Leave-Behind Questionnaire in the 2016 (N = 4293) and 2018 (N = 4714) waves of the Health and Retirement Study. We conducted a cross-sectional path analysis via structural equation modeling, including objective and subjective perspectives. The same model was tested in both samples. Results: Both social isolation and financial insecurity were associated with depression. We found several mediating risks and protective factors of these relationships. Objective financial status affected depression through both perceived financial insecurity and perceived social isolation, whereas objective isolation affected depression through perceived social support. This mediation model was -significant after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of investigating the balance between risk and protection for depression, in the rising number of older adults aging alone in society. Findings suggest that objective and perceived measures offer unique windows into psychological constructs. Considering both objective and subjective perspectives may provide alternative targets for subsequent interventions to improve mental health in later life.
Physical Activity Participation Decreases the Risk of Depression in Older Adults: The ATHLOS Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract:Abstract Background To which extent physical activity is associated with depression independent of older adults’ physical and cognitive functioning is largely unknown. This cohort study using harmonised data by the EU Ageing Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies consortium, including over 20 countries, to evaluate the longitudinal association of physical activity (light-to-moderate or vigorous intensity) with depression in older adults (aged ≥ 50 years). Results We evaluated 56,818 participants (light-to-moderate models; 52.7% females, age 50–102 years) and 62,656 participants (vigorous models; 52.7% females, age 50–105 years). Compared to never, light-to-moderate or vigorous physical activity was associated with a lower incidence rate ratio (IRR) of depression (light-to-moderate model: once/week: 0.632, 95% CI 0.602–0.663; twice or more/week: 0.488, 95% CI 0.468–0.510; vigorous model: once/week: 0.652, 95% CI 0.623–0.683; twice or more/week: 0.591, 95% CI 0.566–0.616). Physical activity remained associated with depression after adjustment for the healthy ageing scale, which is a scale that incorporated 41 items of physical and cognitive functioning (light-to-moderate model: once/week: 0.787, 95% CI 0.752–0.824; twice or more/week: 0.711, 95% CI 0.682–0.742; vigorous model: once/week: 0.828, 95% CI 0.792–0.866; twice or more/week: 0.820, 95% CI 0.786–0.856). Conclusions Physical activity, of any intensity and weekly frequency, was a strong protective factor against depression, independent of physical and mental functioning. Health policies could stimulate the incorporation of lower physical activity intensity to protect against depression, which might be more feasible at the population level.

Cultural engagement and incident depression in older adults: evidence from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Abstract:Background There is a recognised need for the identification of factors that might be protective against the development of depression in older adults. Over the past decade, there has been growing research demonstrating the effects of cultural engagement (which combines a number of protective factors including social interaction, cognitive stimulation and gentle physical activity) on the treatment of depression, but as yet not on its prevention. Aims To explore whether cultural engagement in older adults is associated with a reduced risk of developing depression over the following decade. Method Working with data from 2148 adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing who were free from depression at baseline, we used logistic regression models to explore associations between frequency of cultural engagement (including going to museums, theatre and cinema) and the risk of developing depression over the following 10 years using a combined index of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and physician-diagnosed depression. Results There was a dose–response relationship between frequency of cultural engagement and the risk of developing depression independent of sociodemographic, health-related and social confounders. This equated to a 32% lower risk of developing depression for people who attended every few months (odds ratio (OR) = 0.68, 95% CI 0.47–0.99, P = 0.046) and a 48% lower risk for people who attended once a month or more (OR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.34–0.80, P = 0.003). Results were robust to sensitivity analyses exploring reverse causality, subclinical depressive symptoms and alternative CES-D thresholds. Conclusions Cultural engagement appears to be an independent risk-reducing factor for the development of depression in older age. Declaration of interest None.

Abstract:Objectives Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide, and has become one of the key issues in the public health sector. Social participation is one of the most important measures to support the rapidly aging population and can reduce the risk of depression in the elderly. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between different types of social participation and depression in the elderly, and reduce the level of depression in the elderly by promoting social participation. Methods In order to accurately evaluate the causal relationship between participation in different types of social activities and depression in the elderly, this paper uses propensity score matching (PSM) for analysis based on counterfactual framework. The specific matching methods used are: k-nearest neighbor matching method, kernel matching method and radius matching method. Results In this study, 31.4% of the elderly have depression, and the proportion of female elderly is significantly higher. Participation in different social activities has different effects on depression in the elderly. Taking into account sample selection bias, participation in friend-making, exercise, and recreational activities can effectively reduce the risk of depression in the elderly. Compared with other social activities, participation in exercise and recreational activities are more helpful to reduce the risk of depression in the elderly. Participating in exercise activities only reduces the risk of depression in 60–69-year-olds, while participating in economic activities increases the risk of depression in the elderly aged 70 and over. Compared with the male elderly, participation in friend-making, exercise, and recreational activities results in the female elderly having stronger resistance to the risk of depression. Conclusions Depression was prevalent among the elderly. Through PSM analysis, different types of social participation have different effects on depression in the elderly. In order to maximize the positive effects of different types of social participation on depression in the elderly, it is necessary to provide differentiated social support environment for the elderly. Expanding the research on the relationship between social participation and depression of the elderly will help to formulate more reasonable public health policies and improve the mental health of the elderly.

Abstract:Background: Depression is the leading cause of mortality among mental health disorders. Evidence about the associations of socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness with depression is scarce. We aimed to identify whether social activities and loneliness mediate the association between socioeconomic status and depression, and the extent of interactive or joint relationships between social activities, loneliness, and socioeconomic status on depression. Methods: In this population-based, cross-national cohort study we used data from five nationally representative surveys across 24 countries between Feb 15, 2008, and Feb 27, 2019: the Health and Retirement Study (HRS); the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA); the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE); the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS); and the Mexican Health and Ageing Study (MHAS). We included participants who were aged 50 years and older with reported information on socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness at baseline, and who had been assessed at least twice. We excluded participants with depressive symptoms at baseline; those with missing data on depressive symptoms and covariates; and those lost to follow-up. We defined socioeconomic status as high and low using latent class analysis based on family income, education, and employment status. Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) or EURO-D. We applied Cox proportional hazard models to estimate the association of socioeconomic status with depression. We used random-effects models to obtain pooled results. Joint and interactive effects of socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness on depression were explored, and the mediating roles of social activities and loneliness in the association between socioeconomic status and depression were explored using causal mediation analysis. Findings: A total of 69 160 participants were included in our study and, during a median follow-up of 5 years, a total of 20 237 participants developed depression with a pooled incidence of 7·2 (95% CI 4·4-10·0) per 100 person-years. Compared with participants with high socioeconomic status, those with low socioeconomic status had a higher risk of depression (pooled hazard ratio [HR] 1·34; 95% CI 1·23-1·44). The proportion of the associations between socioeconomic status and depression mediated by social activities and loneliness were 6·12% (1·14-28·45) and 5·54% (0·71-27·62), respectively. We only observed a significant multiplicative interaction of socioeconomic status and loneliness with depression (pooled HR 0·84; 0·79-0·90). Compared with participants with high socioeconomic status and who were socially active and not lonely, those with low socioeconomic status and who were socially inactive and lonely had a higher risk of depression (pooled HR 2·45; 2·08-2·82). Interpretation: Social inactivity and loneliness positively mediated a small proportion of the association between socioeconomic status and depression, indicating that other approaches in addition to interventions targeting social isolation and loneliness are required to mitigate the risk of depression in older adults. Additionally, the joint effects of socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness highlight the benefits of simultaneous and integrated interventions to reduce the global burden of depression. Abstract:Japan has the highest life expectancy worldwide. Older adults who experience economic insecurity may refrain from seeking medical consultation or using long-term care insurance, and these behaviors may increase the incidence and progression of frailty. This study conducted a cross-sectional survey to identify factors related to a sense of economic insecurity among older adults who participate in social activities, and identified support measures. In total, 1,351 older adults aged ≥65 years who had participated in social activities voluntarily completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed their physical, cognitive, social, and psychological conditions, and economic insecurity. We performed univariate analysis considering a sense of economic insecurity as the dependent variable, and conducted multiple logistic regression analysis (forced entry method) considering the independent variables with p<0.1 as the covariates. Among the 872 filled questionnaires, 717 were analyzed as they had no missing data with respect to the responses to survey questions (valid response rate was 53.1%). Analysis results showed that 43.6% of the older adults had a sense of economic insecurity, which was most common among those aged 75–84 years, accounting for 47.3%, followed by those aged 65–74 years accounting for 44.1%, and those aged ≥85 years accounting for 31.5% (p<0.05). The sense of economic insecurity was not associated with physical conditions, subjective symptoms of dementia, or social conditions; however, it grew with increased loneliness (OR: 1.71, 1.002–2.92, p = 0.049) and decreased with an increased subjective sense of well-being (OR: 0.86, 0.81–0.92, <0.001). Economic insecurity among older adults was not associated with physical, cognitive, or social aspects, as reported in previous studies. The survey respondents constituted older adults who participate in social activities. Maintaining interactions within the community, even in old age, may prevent loneliness and improve subjective health.

Depression and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Elderly Patients during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Israel: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Aim: This study aims to assess how optimism, social support, and perceived susceptibility are associated with depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life among elderly patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 256 participants age 60 through 95 completed the following self-administered questionnaires: Perceived Susceptibility, Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Symptoms of Depression (CES-D) and health-related quality of life (SF-12v2 Health Survey). Data were collected from June to July 2020, 3 months after the COVID-19 state of emergency was declared in Israel. Participants were interviewed by family medicine residents via telephone. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlations, t-tests between groups, regression analyses, and Hayes’ PROCESS to analyze a moderated mediation model. Results: Of the elderly participants, 37.5% were classified as having depression. Optimism, social support and health-related quality of life were positively associated. Higher optimism and social support were related to lower perceived susceptibility and lower depression. Results of a multivariate regression explained 29% of the variance in depression and 19% of the variance in health-related quality of life. The relationships assessed by 4 Process models were significant, such that higher optimism and social support were related to lower perceived susceptibility, which in turn was related to higher depression and lower health-related quality of life. Conclusions: Optimism and social support may be effective in coping with challenges and buffering depression. Perceived susceptibility may mediate the association of optimism and social support with higher depression and lower health-related quality of life. The conclusions of this study underscore the need to treat depression among older adults during this period. Hence, healthcare providers should also support elderly patients living at home. In giving this type of help, healthcare providers should strive to increase social support and optimism among older adults.
Social participation reduces depressive symptoms among older adults: an 18-year longitudinal analysis in Taiwan

Abstract:Background: Relatively little empirical attention has focused on the association between social participation and depressive symptoms amongst older adults in Asian nations, where persons over the age of 65 represent a rapidly growing segment of the population. This study explores the dynamic relationship between participation in social activities and trajectories of depressive symptomatology among older Taiwanese adults surveyed over 18 years. Methods: Data are from a nationally representative sample of 1,388 adults aged 60-64 first surveyed in 1989 and followed over an 18-year time period for a total of six waves. Individual involvement in social activities was categorized into continuous participation, ceased participation before age 70, initiating participation in older adulthood, never participated, and dropped out before age 70. Two domains of depressive symptoms--negative affect and lack of positive affect--were measured using a 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale. Results: Analyses using growth curve modeling showed that continuously participating or initiating participation in social activities later life is significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms among older Taiwanese adults, even after controlling for the confounding effects of aging, individual demographic differences, and health status. Conclusions: These findings suggest that maintaining or initiating social participation in later life benefits the mental health of older adults. Facilitating social activities among older adults is a promising direction for programs intended to promote mental health and successful aging among older adults in Taiwan.
Less Social Participation Is Associated With a Higher Risk of Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Older Adults: A Community-Based Longitudinal Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:ObjectiveWe aimed to examine the association between social participation and depressive symptoms among Chinese older people aged 65 years or above to supplement limited studies in China on this topic. MethodsThis community-based longitudinal prospective cohort study used the data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS, baseline in 2014 and a follow-up in 2018). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Social participation was assessed using a composite index by considering the frequency for the two types of social activity: organized social activities and informal activities. Pearson's chi(2) test was used to correlate the characteristics of participants with social participation or depressive symptoms. Log-binomial regression models were used to assess the association between social participation and the risk of depressive symptoms. ResultsThe incidence of depressive symptoms was 28.8% among 2,200 participants in 2018 after a 4-year follow-up. Participants with no social participation (32.6%), organized social activities (30.6%), or informal social activities (31.2%) were more likely to have depressive symptoms. After the adjustment of demographic factors, socioeconomic status, lifestyle habits, and health status, in comparison with older people who often engaged in social participation, organized social activities, and informal social activities, the risk of depressive symptoms was 45% [adjusted risk ratio (aRR): 1.45, 95% CI: 1.16-1.82], 42% (aRR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.02-2.00), and 29% (aRR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02-1.99) higher among older people with no social participation and who never engaged in organized social activities and informal social activities, respectively. ConclusionsThis study showed that the lack of social participation, including organized social activities and informal social activities, was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms after 4 years among older adults in China. Our findings shed lights into the feasibility of promoting social participation to reduce the risk of depressive symptoms and promote longevity and healthy aging among older adults.
The longitudinal reciprocal association between depression and physical activity in old age: The role of lifetime cumulative adversity

Abstract:Objective This study investigated the reciprocal nature of the depression–physical activity relationship with reference to lifetime cumulative adversity (LCA), over a period of 8 years across 5 time points in aging. Method Based on data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), the sample included 21,996 participants between the ages of 50 and 100 years (M = 65.5, SD = 9.1). The analysis was designed as a random intercept cross-lagged panel model. The trajectories measured were depression and physical activity. The independent variable, LCA, was created by the sum of stressful events, and the analyses controlled for background characteristics. Results The findings revealed that physical activity significantly reduced the risk for depression at two time points along the study, whereas depression significantly reduced future physical activity during the entire period examined. Further, a higher level of LCA was associated with lower baseline levels of physical activity and higher levels of depression ( β = −0.04, p < 0.001; β = 0.12, p < 0.001; respectively). Conclusions The results support a bidirectional relation between physical activity and depression, with stronger evidence for depression to physical activity. Interventions targeting the vulnerable population with a history of cumulative adversity, and utilizing techniques to mitigate depressive symptoms, may help to decrease the risk for physical inactivity and other health consequences in this population.

Childhood adversity and depression of older adults: the moderating effect of social participation

Abstract:Objective: Examine the effect of childhood adversity on depression in older adults and the regulatory impact that social participation has on depression. Methods: Based on 6,704 standard-compliant research subjects, single factor analysis, multiple linear regression model, and tendency score matching were used to analyze the impact of childhood adversity on depression in older adults and the regulatory effect of social participation. Results: The depression rate is higher among women, young age, low education, unmarried, in agricultural households, older adults with low annual income, pre-retirement work type in agriculture, non-drinking, and those with two or more chronic diseases (p < 0.05). Children who experienced adversity as children are more likely to suffer from depression as adults (β = 0.513, 0.590, 0.954, 0.983, 1.221, 0.953, 0.718; p < 0.05). Through the tendency score, the result is matched with the endogenous test. As well, older adults are more likely to suffer psychological damage from a greater number of childhood adversities in their early years (β = 1.440, 2.646, 4.122; p < 0.001). It has been shown that social participation will reduce the negative impact of low-income family economic circumstances on depression among older adults of all ages (β = -0.459,-0.567; p < 0.01), aggravate depression resulting from "neighborhood void of mutual assistance" and "no more fun to play" for older adults of all ages (β = 1.024, 0.894; p < 0.01), and exacerbate depression resulting from "loneliness because there are no friends" for the oldest old (β = 0.476, 0.779; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Older adults who experience childhood adversity are more likely to suffer from depression. Social participation plays a regulatory role in the relationship between childhood adversity and depression in older adults. For older adults' mental health to improve, family and social adversity should be prevented, and moderate participation in society should be encouraged.
The association between subjective age and financial exploitation vulnerability among older adults: The moderating role of social support

Abstract:Financial exploitation of older adults bears detrimental physical and psychological consequences. However, risk factors of financial exploitation vulnerability (FEV) remain elusive. In line with a growing awareness of the importance of subjective perceptions of the aging process for older adults' functioning and well-being, this study examined the connection between subjective age (feeling younger/older than one's chronological age) and FEV, and the moderating effect of social support on this connection. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 137 Israeli older adults (age range 60-89, M = 69.90, SD = 6.85), who completed scales of FEV, subjective age, and social support, as well as relevant socio-demographic information. Older subjective age was associated with increased FEV when social support was low, but not when social support was high. Results are discussed in line with Socio-Emotional Selectivity Theory and provide initial information pertaining to the relevance of subjective age perceptions to FEV in older adults.
