Abstract:Abstract To date South African forensic anthropologists are only able to successfully apply a metric approach to estimate population affinity when constructing a biological profile from skeletal remains. While a non-metric, or macromorphoscopic approach exists, limited research has been conducted to explore its use in a South African population. This study aimed to explore 17 cranial macromorphoscopic traits to develop improved methodology for the estimation of population affinity among black, white and coloured South Africans and for the method to be compliant with standards of best practice. The trait frequency distributions revealed substantial group variation and overlap, and not a single trait can be considered characteristic of any one population group. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s tests demonstrated significant population differences for 13 of the 17 traits. Random forest modelling was used to develop classification models to assess the reliability and accuracy of the traits in identifying population affinity. Overall, the model including all traits obtained a classification accuracy of 79% when assessing population affinity, which is comparable to current craniometric methods. The variable importance indicates that all the traits contributed some information to the model, with the inferior nasal margin, nasal bone contour, and nasal aperture shape ranked the most useful for classification. Thus, this study validates the use of macromorphoscopic traits in a South African sample, and the population-specific data from this study can potentially be incorporated into forensic casework and skeletal analyses in South Africa to improve population affinity estimates.

Abstract:In this paper a method is presented to estimate the reaction term of zinc sulphide precipitation and the zinc concentration in a CSTR, using the read-out signal of a sulphide selective electrode. The reaction between zinc and sulphide is described by a non-linear model and therefore classical observer theory cannot be applied directly, as this theory was initially developed for linear systems. However, by linear reparametrization of this non-linear system, the linear observer theory can be applied in an effective way. This is illustrated by a zinc sulphide example using real data.
Evaluating postcranial macromorphoscopic traits to estimate population variation among modern South Africans

Abstract:Population overlap and the variation within and among populations have been globally observed but is often difficult to quantify. To achieve this, numerous different methods need to be explored and validated to assist with the creation of an accurate biological profile. The current lack of databases for postcranial macromorphoscopic traits indicates the need to further investigate if the method can be employed repeatably in a forensic context. The current study aimed to assess the prevalence of eleven postcranial macromorphoscopic traits in a South African sample. A total of 271 postcrania of adult black, coloured, and white South Africans were assessed. The intra- and inter-observer agreement ranged from fair to almost perfect except for the accessory transverse foramen of C1, which had poor agreement between observers. Only seven traits differed significantly between at least two of the groups. Univariate and multivariate random forest models were created to test the positive predictive performance of the traits to classify population affinity. The classification accuracies for the univariate models ranged from 33.3% to 53.0% and ranged from 54.6% to 62.1% for the multivariate models. Based on the variable importance, the traits assessing spinous process bifurcation were the most discriminatory variables. The results indicate that the postcranial MMS approach does not outperform current methods employed to estimate population affinity. Further research needs to be done for the method to have practical applicability for medicolegal casework in South Africa.

Craniofacial fluctuating asymmetry in gorillas, chimpanzees, and macaques

Abstract:Objectives: Craniofacial fluctuating asymmetry (FA) refers to the random deviations from symmetry exhibited across the craniofacial complex and can be used as a measure of developmental instability for organisms with bilateral symmetry. This article addresses the lack of data on craniofacial FA in nonhuman primates by analyzing FA magnitude and variation in chimpanzees, gorillas, and macaques. We offer a preliminary investigation into how FA, as a proxy for developmental instability, varies within and among nonhuman primates. Materials and methods: We generated 3D surface models of 121 crania from Pan troglodytes troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, and Macaca fascicularis fascicularis. Using geometric morphometric techniques, the magnitude of observed FA was calculated and compared for each individual, sex, and taxon, along with the variation of FA across cranial regions and for each bilateral landmark. Results: Gorillas and macaques exhibited higher and more similar magnitudes of FA to each other than either taxon did to chimpanzees; variation in magnitude of FA followed this same trend. No significant differences were detected between sexes using pooled data across species, but sex did influence FA magnitude within taxa in gorillas. Further, variation in FA variance across cranial regions and by landmark was not distributed in any particular pattern. Conclusion: Possible environmentally induced causes for these patterns of FA magnitude include differences in growth rate and physiological stress experienced during life. Developmental stability may be greatest in chimpanzees in this sample. Additionally, these results point to appropriate landmarks for future FA analyses and may help suggest more urgent candidate taxa for conservation efforts.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Noninferiority (NI) clinical trials are designed to demonstrate that a new treatment is not unacceptably worse than an active control on a clinically meaningful endpoint. While such an endpoint can be of any type, the focus of this manuscript is on the binary-type endpoint. Examples of this endpoint can be clinical cure endpoint for patients with bacterial diseases or based on a pre-specified virological threshold for viral diseases. However, in addition to assessing such a binary endpoint for the NI comparison, the trial may also evaluate a second clinically relevant endpoint for providing additional support to the evidence of the designated primary endpoint. Specifically, if the trial is successful in demonstrating statistical significance on the first endpoint, then observing at least a positive trend in efficacy on the second endpoint may provide additional supportive evidence of efficacy. The second endpoint can be a time-to-event type endpoint, such as time-to-symptom resolution (TSR) or time to all-cause mortality for infectious disease trials, time-to-wound closure for wound healing trials, or other endpoints. We propose two consistency ensured test strategies for the two hypotheses of a trial, one associated with the binary endpoint and the other with the second endpoint, both with the objective of drawing inference regarding the efficacy of the new treatment based on findings from testing the two hypotheses. A key feature of these test strategies is that basically it does not require multiplicity adjustment of the significance levels. We conclude with general discussion of the testing methods and possible applications to unmet medical need trials.
How Does Social Inequality Alter Relationships Between Porous Cranial Lesions and Mortality? Examining the Relationship Between Skeletal Indicators of Stress, Socioeconomic Status, and Survivorship in a Pediatric Autopsy Sample

Abstract:Background In prior exploration of modern and archeological populations, lower SES has been associated with an increased risk of mortality. However, SES is often difficult to ascertain in archeological populations. Thus, explorations of skeletal lesions and their association with mortality may be subject to confounding factors that alter the strength and/or direction of this association. Methods The present study uses data from a modern, documented coronial pediatric dataset to examine the association between porous cranial lesions (PCLs) (cribra orbitalia [CO] and porotic hyperostosis [PH]) and age at death while controlling for SES, as inferred through housing type, with manufactured or apartment housing identified as reflecting individuals from lower SES backgrounds in this context. We include 887 (535 males, 352 females) individuals aged 0.5–20.9 years from New Mexico who died between 2011 and 2022. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was used to assess survivorship as related to PCLs and SES. Results Low SES is associated with lower survivorship. CO does not have a significant association with age at death when not controlling for SES; PH alone is associated with older age at death. Disadvantaged individuals with PCLs have significantly reduced survivorship than those with higher SES. Discussion and Conclusions The findings of this study demonstrate that low SES results in reduced survivorship, and those with low SES and PCLs have worse survivorship than less disadvantaged individuals with PCLs. Thus, the strong contribution of SES to mortality necessitates the consideration of the sociocultural context as a confounding factor when examining associations between variables of interest (such as lesions) and mortality in both past and present populations.

Abstract:Objective Deciduous dental crowns primarily develop during gestation and early infancy and embody early life stress exposures. Composite measures of dental fluctuating asymmetry (DFA) generated from the deciduous teeth may therefore indicate cumulative gestational stress in developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) studies. This study examines whether higher composite measures of deciduous DFA are associated with low birthweight and prematurity, two aspects of birth phenotype consistently associated with increased morbidity and mortality risks in adulthood. Subjects and Methods We evaluated associations between composite deciduous DFA, birthweight, and birth term in two contemporary North American samples: an autopsy sample from New Mexico (n = 94), and sample from a growth cohort study in Burlington, Ontario (n = 304). Dental metric data for each sample was collected from postmortem CT scans and dental casts, respectively. Composite DFA was estimated using buccolingual (BL) and mesiodistal (MD) crown diameters from paired deciduous teeth. Results Contrary to expectations, the results of linear regression indicated no significant relationship between birthweight and DFA, or birth term and DFA, in either sample. Conclusions Deciduous DFA does not predict aspects of birth phenotype associated with gestational stress. Birthweight and birth term are plastic relative to the more developmentally stable deciduous dentition, which may only subtly embody early life stress. We suggest that deciduous DFA should be utilized with caution in DOHaD studies until its relationship with gestational stress is clarified.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Facial skeletal asymmetry is commonly found in humans and its main characteristic is menton deviation. The literature suggests that occlusal and masticatory problems arising from tooth absence could be related to the development of such asymmetries. Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence of mandibular skeletal asymmetries and to investigate its association with posterior tooth absences. Methods: Tomographic images of 952 individuals aged from 18 to 75 years old were used. Asymmetry was the analyzed outcome, and it was categorized into three groups according to gnathion displacement in relation to the midsagittal plane (relative symmetry, moderate asymmetry, and severe asymmetry). Patients were sorted by the presence of all posterior teeth, unilateral posterior tooth absence, or bilateral posterior tooth absence. Chi-square test with a significance level of 5% was used to verify the association between posterior tooth absence and asymmetry. Results: Results show relative symmetry present in 55.3% of the sample, as well as the prevalence of 27.3% for moderate mandibular asymmetry and 17.4% for severe asymmetry. Moderate and severe mandibular asymmetries occurred in a higher proportion in patients with unilateral posterior tooth absence. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the analyzed groups (p = 0.691). Conclusions: In this study, mandibular asymmetries did not present any association with the absence of teeth on the posterior area of the arch.

Abstract:Background: To investigate the relationship between different skeletal facial types and anterior alveolar bone thickness with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in an Asian population. Methods: A total of 130 patients with 1,560 healthy anterior teeth were enrolled. On three-dimensional reconstructed images, Frankfurt-mandibular plane angle (FMA) value and angle formed by subspinale, nasion, and supramental (ANB) value were measured, and subjects were categorized into different groups based on their vertical skeletal patterns as well as sagittal jaw relationships. For each tooth, the thickness of alveolar bone was measured at three locations: 1, 3, and 5 mm apical to alveolar bone crest. Descriptive statistics were used. Kruskal-Wallis test, one-way ANOVA, and independent-samples t-test were used for further analysis. Results: Men's maxillary anterior teeth's lingual alveolar bone thickness was significantly greater than women's (P<0.05). Strong correlations were found between vertical skeletal patterns and lingual alveolar bone thickness of maxillary/mandibular anterior teeth (R-2=0.302, P<0.01 in the maxilla; R-2=0.311, P<0.01 in the mandible). However, no significant difference was shown in the alveolar bone thickness among people with different sagittal bone profiles. Conclusions: The lingual alveolar bone of the maxillary anterior teeth is thicker in males than in females. With the increase of FMA, the anterior alveolar bone gradually became thinner.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: This article is an attempt to apply fluctuating asymmetry as amorphometric method of studying changes in specific structures of the right and the left side of the body to determine variables which may affect morphogenesis and, consequently, human morphology in adulthood. The main aim of this study was to use the fluctuating asymmetry level as an indicator of adverse living conditions in childhood by determining the impact of environmental components (socio-economic factors and air pollution) on the level of body asymmetry in young women and men.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from 877 students from various Polish universities, including 483 women and 394 men. Anthropometric data and questionnaire responses were recorded. As part of the surveys, respondents provided information about their place of residence, socio-economic status and lateralisation. The composite body FA (cFA) was assessed based on six bilateral features: the length of fingers II and IV of both hands, the length and width of the ear, and the length and width of the foot.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The present study supports the hypothesis that asymmetry increases as socioeconomic status decreases and air pollution levels increase. Differences in asymmetry, depending on environmental factors, socioeconomic status (SES) and air quality, were in most cases greater in men than in women. The results confirm that variable asymmetry is a sensitive indicator of an individual's exposure to unfavorable environmental factors during ontogenesis. Moreover, the results of the conducted research suggest that environmental factors may influence the structure of the human body, and irreversible morphological alterations are the result of unfavorable conditions occurring in the early stages of biological development.

Abstract:The expression of facial asymmetries has been recurrently related with poverty and/or disadvantaged socioeconomic status. Departing from the developmental instability theory, previous approaches attempted to test the statistical relationship between the stress experienced by individuals grown in poor conditions and an increase in facial and corporal asymmetry. Here we aim to further evaluate such hypothesis on a large sample of admixed Latin Americans individuals by exploring if low socioeconomic status individuals tend to exhibit greater facial fluctuating asymmetry values. To do so, we implement Procrustes analysis of variance and Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) to estimate potential associations between facial fluctuating asymmetry values and socioeconomic status. We report significant relationships between facial fluctuating asymmetry values and age, sex, and genetic ancestry, while socioeconomic status failed to exhibit any strong statistical relationship with facial asymmetry. These results are persistent after the effect of heterozygosity (a proxy for genetic ancestry) is controlled in the model. Our results indicate that, at least on the studied sample, there is no relationship between socioeconomic stress (as intended as low socioeconomic status) and facial asymmetries.
Stress-induced cardiac troponin T, S100B and estradiol responses in defensive copers: The SABPA study

Abstract:Ineffective stress-coping in Africans is associated with cardiac ischemia during acute mental stress. Ischemic conditions may be worsened by stress-induced release of glial-derived S100‑calcium-binding-protein β (S100B), which is pro-apoptotic for cardiomyocytes. Whether estradiol as coping regulator and cardio-protective factor will protect against pro-apoptotic effects, remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate stress-induced associations between cardiac troponin T/cTnT (cardiac ischemic marker), S100B and estradiol in a bi-ethnic cohort of defensive copers of both sexes. The target population study included African and Caucasian teachers of both sexes (n = 344; aged 20-65 years). The Stroop-color-word-conflict-test was administrated for 1 min to induce acute mental stress in the participants. A chronic stress risk phenotype score was obtained. The Coping Strategy Indicator determined habitual defensive/avoidance/seeking social support coping scores. Fasting blood samples were obtained prior to and 10 min post-Stroop-stress to assess cTnT, S100B and estradiol levels. An interaction between ethnicity, sex and defensive coping (p < 0.05) was found for acute stress-induced percentage changes in estradiol. In defensive coping African men, the Stroop-color-word-conflict-test elicited decreases in S100B and increases in estradiol. Again, in this group, S100B decreases were related to unchanged cTnT, a chronic stress risk phenotype and acute estradiol increases (p < 0.05). No associations among main markers were apparent in the African women or the Caucasian defensive copers of both sexes. In the defensive coping African men, the markers studied may play a relevant role in the brain-cardiovascular system interaction during stress exposure. Further research is needed to elaborate on potential mechanisms and to establish clinical relevance.
Insights into dental age estimation: introducing multiple regression data from a Black South African population on modified gustafson's criteria

Abstract:Dental Age Estimation (DAE) is an effective instrument of the rule of law for verifying dubious age claims in living individuals. Once tooth development is complete, only degenerative dental characteristics can be used for this purpose. The influence of ethnicity on these degenerative dental characteristics has not been clarified.Degenerative changes were examined using modified Gustafson's criteria including secondary dentin formation, cementum apposition, periodontal recession and attrition using the Olze et al. (2012) staging scales. Orthopantomograms of 1882 black South Africans, consisting of 934 females and 948 males, from 12.00 to 40.96 years of chronological age were utilized. Two independent examiners performed the evaluations, with one of the two evaluating all radiographs twice.The relationship between individual characteristics and chronological age was analyzed using multiple regression analysis with chronological age as the dependent variable. The resulting R2 values ranged from 0.22 to 0.35, and the standard error of estimate were between 6.6 and 7.3 years. The correlation with age was consistently lower for females compared to males. The characteristic of cementum apposition emerged as critical in this population, due to a particularly low correlation with age and observer agreements partly in the "slight" range. The formula's values for the correlation with age were in general below the literature values for other populations. Overall, the limited precision of the age estimation by the formulae presented, especially for females, must be emphasized. The question of whether ethnicity per se exerts an influence on the characteristics in question, or whether the different socio-economic status, which encompasses factors such as nutrition and healthcare, is the determining factor, needs to be assessed in future studies.
Heart Rate Variability and Inflammatory Stress Response in Young African American Men: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk

Abstract:Background: African American men have a disproportionately higher incidence of and suffer greater severity and earlier death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). A common feature of many diseases, which disproportionately afflict disadvantaged African Americans, is inflammation. In particular, inflammation plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of CVD in that persistent inflammation contributes to plaque evolution and destabilization. Adverse childhood experiences increase the risk for adult inflammatory based disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. This inflammatory burden becomes evident during stressful events and may be related to alterations in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. We previously reported that African American men who experienced childhood adversity exhibited a greater inflammatory (IL-6) response to acute stress challenge (Trier Social Stress Test - TSST). The purpose of this study was to determine whether altered ANS activity, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV), contributes to a greater proinflammatory response to stress in those exposed to childhood adversity. Methods: Thirty-four African American adult males underwent the TSST while instrumented with Holter monitors to record continuous heart rate for HRV determination. HRV was calculated as the low frequency (LF) to high frequency (HF) heart rate ratio (LF/HF), with higher LF/HF ratios corresponding to higher sympathetic vs. parasympathetic activity. Salivary samples were collected pre- and post-TSST to measure the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6. Childhood adversity was assessed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Results: Hierarchical linear modeling demonstrated that higher levels of physical abuse were related to a steeper rise in LF/HF ratio during the TSST. Further, a higher LF/HF ratio, in combination with greater exposure to emotional and physical abuse was associated with a greater IL-6 response to the TSST. Conclusions: These findings suggest that adverse childhood experiences associate with an adult phenotype characterized by an altered ANS response to stress as well as a greater proinflammatory (IL-6) response to an acute stressor. Elevations in salivary inflammatory markers have been associated with increased CVD risk. In conclusion, these findings suggest a role for the ANS in the underlying neuro-biological processes whereby childhood adversity predisposes to a more intense inflammatory response to stressful challenge during adulthood.
White matter fractional anisotropy in a nonhuman primate model of early Alzheimer’s Disease‐like neuropathology: Relationships with social status and physiologic measures of stress responses

Abstract:Psychosocial stress is associated with micro‐ and macrostructural brain changes that may increase risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). White matter (WM) appears particularly vulnerable, and changes in white matter integrity are an early sign of AD pathogenesis. Cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) have complex central nervous systems and naturally develop early AD‐like neuropathology with age. Female macaques form social status hierarchies in which subordinates exhibit behavioral and physiological signs of stress, and increased stress‐related pathologies similar to humans. Nonhuman primate studies provide a useful platform in which to assess relationships between stress and brain health is a well‐controlled environment with limited outside influences. Thus, these nonhuman primates are useful translational models for studying relationships of psychosocial stress with early AD‐like neuropathology. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we examined the relationship between psychosocial stress and fractional anisotropy (index of WM microstructural integrity (FA)) in 38 middle‐aged female cynomolgus macaques living in small social groups. Subjects were classified as either dominant or subordinate based upon the outcomes of agonistic interactions. FA in several regions of interest (ROIs): splenium, body, and genu of the corpus callosum (CC), frontal, temporal, occipital, and total cerebral and cerebellar white matter was assessed in relation to social status and several contemporaneous measures of stress physiology (blood pressure, resting cortisol, and heart rate variability (HRV)). Repeated measures ANOVA using left and right ROIs as a repeated measure showed that dominants had significantly higher FA than subordinates in the genu and splenium of the CC, and the occipital and frontal cortices (all p<0.05). Dominants also had higher FA, on average, in the body of CC (p = 0.07) and cerebrum (p = 0.10), although these differences were not significant. Dominants and subordinates did not differ in temporal or cerebellar FA (both p>0.7). FA was inversely correlated with blood pressure, directly correlated with HRV (p’s<0.05), but not correlated with serum cortisol. Psychosocial stress of subordination, as well as physiologic indices of stress responses, was associated with diminished WM integrity in several brain regions. These studies lay the groundwork for investigations of interventions on psychosocial stress to reduce AD risk later in life.

Abstract:Linear measurements taken from bony landmarks are often utilised in facial approximation (FA) to estimate and plan the placement of overlying soft tissue features. This process similarly guides craniofacial superimposition (CFS) practices. Knowledge of how hard and soft tissue features spatially relate around the mouth region is, however, limited. Geometric morphometric techniques have thus been used to investigate size and shape variation in dentition-to-lip mouth morphology in a South African population. Twenty landmarks (twelve dentition, eight lips) were digitised, using cone-beam CT images of the anterior craniofacial complex in a Frankfurt/Frankfort position, for 147 individuals aged between 20 and 75 years. Principal Component Analysis and Canonical Variate Analysis established that much shape variation exists. A two-way ANOVA identified significant (p < 0.0001) population and sex variation with mouth shape. Black individuals presented with thicker lips, with the oral fissure aligning closely to the dental occlusion. Oral fissure position for white individuals corresponded to the inferior one-quarter (females) or one-sixth (males) of the maxillary central incisor crowns. Males presented larger dimensions than females, but females had a greater lip-to-teeth height ratio than their male counterparts. A pooled within-group regression analysis assessed the effect of age on the dentition and lips and found that it had a significant (p < 0.0001) impact on mouth shape. Ageing was associated with a reduced lip and teeth height, increased mouth width, and a lowered oral fissure and cheilion placement. The generated mean shape data, with metric guides, offer a visual and numerical guide that builds on existing FA and CFS standards, enhancing our understanding of hard and soft tissue relationships.

Abstract:Background Low skeletal muscle mass and density, as assessed by CT-body composition (CT-BC), are recognised to have prognostic value in non-cancer and cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to compare CT-BC parameters between non-cancer (abdominal aortic aneurysm, AAA) and cancer (colorectal cancer, CRC) patients. Methods Two retrospective multicentre cohorts were compared. Thresholds of visceral fat area (VFA, Doyle), skeletal fat index (SFI, Ebadi), skeletal muscle index (SMI, Martin), and skeletal muscle density (SMD, Martin) were applied to these cohorts and compared. The systemic inflammatory response (SIR) was measured by the systemic inflammatory grade (SIG). Results 1695 patients were included; 759 patients with AAA and 936 patients with CRC. Low SMD (33% vs. 66%, p <0.001) was more prevalent in the CRC cohort. Low SMI prevalence was similar in both cohorts (51% vs. 51%, p = 0.80). Compared with the AAA cohort, the CRC cohort had a higher prevalence of raised SIG ( p <0.001). Increasing age (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.38–1.72, p < 0.001) and elevated SIG (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.09–1.40, p = 0.001) were independently associated with increased odds of low SMI. Increasing age (OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.66–2.17, p < 0.001) CRC diagnosis (OR 5.89, 95% CI 4.55–7.62, p 2 (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.08–1.73, p = 0.01), and elevated SIG (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.03–1.37, p = 0.02) were independently associated with increased odds of low SMD. Conclusions Increasing age and systemic inflammation appear to be important determinants of loss of skeletal muscle mass and quality irrespective of disease.

Medieval monastic health: Variation in skeletal signs of inflammation and developmental stress between religious orders in London

Abstract:Objectives Previous bioarchaeological analyses of medieval monastic and nonmonastic cemeteries in London revealed evidence of lower risks of mortality, and thus better health, in the monastic settings. However, comparison of the two monastic communities, Bermondsey Abbey and Merton Priory, which adhered to different religious ideals, suggested lower risks of mortality in the former. This study examines patterns of skeletal biomarkers, which reflect developmental stress or inflammation, in an attempt to clarify the possible underlying mechanisms producing apparent health differences in these monastic communities. Materials and Methods This study uses skeletal data on age‐at‐death, periosteal new bone formation (PNBF), and cribra orbitalia from 558 adults (18 years of age and older) estimated to be male from Bermondsey Abbey and Merton Priory. Biomarker age patterns are assessed via Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and binary logistic regression. Differences in frequencies of biomarkers between the monastic sites are evaluated using Chi‐square and hierarchical log‐linear analyses. Results In general, PNBF is positively associated with age, and cribra orbitalia is negatively associated with age. The frequency of PNBF formation is significantly higher and that of cribra orbitalia is significantly lower in Bermondsey Abbey compared with Merton Priory. Conclusions The differences in frequencies of these skeletal biomarkers support previous findings suggesting that health conditions were better in Bermondsey Abbey than in Merton Priory. The age patterns of cribra orbitalia suggest that these differences reflect conditions and the greater health‐promoting effects of religiosity or isolation from the lay community in Bermondsey Abbey rather than differences in selective admissions processes.

Abstract:Background. Racial disparities in prostate cancer survivorship persist despite clinical advancements. Stress has been implicated as a potential driver of these disparities, with both chronic and perceived stress found to be associated with adverse cancer survivorship. Allostatic load (AL), one such marker of chronic stress, has been associated with decreased survivorship and worse quality of life (QoL) in cancer survivors. Perceived stress has also been associated with outcomes in cancer survivorship including increased symptom burden and worse quality of life. Despite this, few studies incorporate direct measures of stress or examine how these measures contribute to AL This study examines the relationship between AL, objective stress (as measured by occurrence of stressful life events), and self-reported perceived stress in a subset of African American prostate cancer survivors (N=59) enrolled in Men Moving Forward, a randomized trial to improve body composition through lifestyle change. Methods. At baseline, participants completed an adapted version of the Crisis in the Family Systems (CRISYS) survey, an instrument designed to measure recent (past 4 months) contemporary life stressors. The survey was tailored for AAPCS via feedback from the community advisory board. 41 items reflective of 11 domains were included. Overall CRISYS scores and scores by domain were calculated. Feelings of perceived stress in the past month were measured via the 10-item perceived stress scale, with higher scores reflecting higher perceived stress. AL scores used 15 criterion reflecting neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic systems. Each criterion was assigned a score of 0 or 1: 1 if in the high-risk range based on clinical guidelines. An index score was generated by summing high-risk indicators. Pearson correlations were used to explore the relationship between stress measures. Logistic regression comparing the those with highest quartile AL to lower AL was also performed. Results. The mean AL score was 5.6 (SD ± 2.4) of a maximum score of 15. The mean summative score for CRISYS was 4.8 (SD ± 3.3). The most common domains of stress experienced were safety in the community (67%), relationships (66%), and medical issues of loved ones (44%). The Mean PSS was 11.5 (SD ± 6.0), with 64% of men reporting low stress and 36% moderate stress levels. Significant correlations were found between CRISYS and PSS, however no correlations with AL were detected. No significant findings were identified in the regression analysis. Conclusions. Objective and perceived stress measures were correlated, but no associations were found between the perceived or objective stress measure and AL in this sample.. Given AL is meant to reflect the physiological impact of cumulative and chronic stress burdens, it is possible that the shorter-term context of the objective (past 4 months) and perceived stress (past month) measures were not sufficiently aligned with the longer-term context of AL.
