Abstract:As widely acknowledged, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) stand as significant contributors to the presence of microplastics in surface water. Nonetheless, there exists a notable research gap regarding the extent of potential pollution resulting from the concurrent and uninterrupted discharges originating from multiple WWTPs into small-scale receiving water bodies. This study endeavors to address this knowledge deficit by conducting a thorough investigation into the prevalence of microplastics in surface water. The research encompasses seven distinct locations within the Changzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the effluent of three WWTPs situated along the tributary. The results indicate differences in the distribution of microplastics in surface waters of mainstream and tributaries. While the microplastic abundance and composition showed little variation along the main stream, the tributaries displayed an overall increasing trend in microplastic abundance from upstream to downstream. Notably, the major contributors to this increase were fragments, fiber particles, and microplastics with particle sizes ranging from 100 to 300 μm. Considering that the primary distinction between the tributaries and the mainstream is the presence of the three WWTPs along the tributaries, the study conducted a correlation analysis between river surface water and effluents from these plants. The results indicated a stronger correlation between the tributaries and the effluents, suggesting that WWTPs are one of the primary factors contributing to the elevated levels of microplastics in the tributaries. Finally, a comparative analysis of microplastic abundance in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section and other regions was conducted. The findings revealed that the microplastic pollution level in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section is higher than that in most other rivers. Therefore, the issue of microplastic pollution in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section warrants our attention, particularly with regard to the effectiveness of microplastic removal by the WWTPs along its course.

Abstract:Rivers have been recognized as major transport pathways for microplastics into the sea but large-scale quantitative data on the environmental fate of riverine microplastics remains limited, hindering proper risk assessment and development of regulatory measures. Microplastics in the whole Yangtze River Basin of China were systematically investigated by sampling the water, sediment, and soil. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with an average abundance of 1.27 items/L, 286.20 items/kg, and 338.09 items/kg for water, sediments, and soils, respectively, with polypropylene and polyethylene being the most abundant polymers. A generally increasing trend of microplastic abundance from upstream to downstream was identified, which were co-attributed by geographical and anthropogenic factors including elevation, longitude, distance from the nearest city, population density, urbanization rate, and land use. Microplastics in the sediments showed more prominent vertical migration than those in the soils, and the density and size of microplastics may be the key factors governing the migration of microplastics across different compartments. Community analysis showed that microplastics in different compartments were significantly different and highly correlated with geographical distance. Major cities at the middle and lower reaches were considered pivotal nodes of microplastic pollution in the Yangtze River Basin. Policy recommendations were also proposed towards better remediation of microplastic pollution involving riverine systems.

Abstract:Based on field investigations and modeling estimates, rivers are considered an important route taken by microplastics to reach the sea. However, only a few studies have directly assessed occurrence and fate of microplastics in rivers. In this study, we surveyed the occurrence and fate of microplastic debris in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which was estimated to be the largest riverine source of plastic debris to the sea. The abundance of microplastics at 15 sites along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River ranged from 1.95 × 105 to 9.00 × 105 items/km2 with an average of 4.92 × 105 items/km2. The abundance of microplastics was positively correlated with the abundance of mesoplastics. Megacities, large riparian lakes, and seawater encroachment appeared to be main factors affecting the distribution of microplastics in the Yangtze River, while the deposition to benthic and riparian sediments likely led to observed decreases in microplastics in some sections of the river. The results of this study indicate that a considerable amount of microplastics generated in large river catchments are not transported to the sea and past modeling estimates of microplastic flux may contain biases. The flux of microplastics reaching the sea should be calculated based on long-term monitoring at the tidal limit of rivers. More importantly, the fate and effects of microplastics retained in the river system should receive more attention.

Abstract:This study evaluated cause-specific mortality among 3,161 men who were employed in the aerospace division of a rubber manufacturing company. Compared to other production workers at the plant, aerospace workers in deicer and fuel cell manufacturing jobs experienced a 60% excess of deaths from lung cancer. Deicer and fuel cell workers who were under 65 years of age had lung cancer rates that were approximately twice those of other rubber workers of comparable age. Aerospace division employees also had elevated rates of bladder cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. However, detailed analyses suggested that, with the exception of lung cancer, these cancer excesses were not likely to be attributable to employment in the aerospace division.

Abstract:The Yangtze River is an important global channel for plastics and microplastics (MPs) to enter the sea. However, the existing research on MPs in the Yangtze River has primarily focused on the mainstream region, without regarding the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risks associated with tributaries, as well as their relationship with the mainstream. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a large-scale catchment-wide investigation of the surface water in the Yangtze River, encompassing MPs (48 µm-5 mm) of the mainstream and 15 important tributaries. Tributaries and upstream regions exhibited relatively higher levels of MPs compared with the mainstream and different sections of the river. The distribution of MPs is primarily influenced by the emission of arable land and the pH of water. Notably, the upstream tributary areas demonstrated the highest ecological risks associated with MPs. Further analysis highlighted that the tributaries accounted for a contribution ranging from 16% to 67% in quantity and from 14% to 90% in mass of the microplastics observed in the mainstream. Our results suggest that the pollution of tributaries and their associated ecological risk migration must be effectively regulated.

Abstract:Microplastics are widely present in global ecosystems, threatening both marine and freshwater species. Given this problem, it is vital to research where land-based microplastics originate and how they are transmitted to receiving waters in urban agglomerations. Research results should inform systemic mitigation efforts to prevent future contamination. This study established the multi-directional transmission network of a microplastic mass balance system using a source-pathway-receptor framework, and involving annual source stocks and pathway flows with considerable variations under dry and wet weather patterns. Details of a baseline scenario quantifying the occurrence and spread of microplastics in an urban agglomeration were also determined in the context of current environmental management practices. We demonstrated that the total stock of the six major pollution sources amounted to 5317.7 ± 2175.3 and 3320.1 ± 953.6 tons/a in dry and wet weather, respectively; and 2347.8 ± 766.9 and 1991.8 ± 701.8 tons/a flows directly entered the sewer system and receiving water in Shanghai, China, respectively. Prominent microplastic stocks were found in atmospheric fallout, industrial wastewater, and domestic sewage. These stocks were much higher compared to crop farming wastewater, aquacultural wastewater, and livestock and poultry breeding wastewater. Total microplastic flows entering receiving water reached 3207.4 ± 1071.6 tons/a; the largest contributions were from wet weather overflow (23.7%), direct atmospheric fallout (21.7%), wastewater treatment plant effluent (14.2%), industrial wastewater (14.1%), and surface runoff (10.4%). Weather patterns led to divergent microplastic transmission pathways and mass flows, revealing a lagging timeline mode and illustrating the basic spatiotemporal features of microplastic contamination in urban agglomerations. Terminal disposal practices retained about two-fifths of the microplastic flows that would have otherwise been transmitted into receiving water. Of these, land surface sweep contributed half of the retained flow. Improvements in WWTP removal efficiency, storm sewage interception rate, industrial wastewater collection rate, and sewer sediment dredge rate could further enhance the systemic benefits.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated microplastic contamination of the Yangtze River from the upper reaches to the estuary using different sampling methods to understand extensive information on microplastic pollution. The microplastic samples were collected at 10 sites using two conventional methods: trawling and filtering water. The results showed that the average abundance of microplastics ranged from 1.62±0.61 × 105 to 4.25±3.87 × 106 items/km2 (trawling samples) and 800.0±300.0 to 3088.9±330.6 items/m3 (filtering water samples). The average abundance (by trawling) in the Three Gorges Reservoir (2.80±1.86 × 106 items/km2) was one order of magnitude higher than that of other sections, which affirmed the barrier effect of dams on microplastic distribution. The barrier effect was more obvious on larger size particles by comparing the results of two methods. The abundances near the left, right banks, and in the midstream showed no significant difference by both two methods, illustrating that sampling at each bank along the Yangtze River was also representative in one section. Characteristics analysis demonstrated that fragments (47.9%) dominated in trawling samples and fiber (63.4%) dominated in filtering water samples. Microplastics of small sizes (<1 mm) and transparent were dominant in samples collected by the two methods. Polyethylene (PP) and polypropylene (PE) were the dominant polymer types in the detected microplastics. In this study, we provided detailed information on microplastic pollution of the Yangtze River from the upstream to the estuary, which is useful for microplastic management and control in this area.

Abstract:Excessive ethanol consumption affects virtually any organ, both by indirect and direct mechanisms. Considerable research in the last two decades has widened the knowledge about the paramount importance of proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative damage in the pathogenesis of many of the systemic manifestations of alcoholism. These cytokines derive primarily from activated Kupffer cells exposed to Gram-negative intestinal bacteria, which reach the liver in supra-physiological amounts due to ethanol-mediated increased gut permeability. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) that enhance the inflammatory response are generated both by activation of Kupffer cells and by the direct metabolic effects of ethanol. The effects of this increased cytokine secretion and ROS generation lie far beyond liver damage. In addition to the classic consequences of endotoxemia associated with liver cirrhosis that were described several decades ago, important research in the last ten years has shown that cytokines may also induce damage in remote organs such as brain, bone, muscle, heart, lung, gonads, peripheral nerve, and pancreas. These effects are even seen in alcoholics without significant liver disease. Therefore, alcoholism can be viewed as an inflammatory condition, a concept which opens the possibility of using new therapeutic weapons to treat some of the complications of this devastating and frequent disease. In this review we examine some of the most outstanding consequences of the altered cytokine regulation that occurs in alcoholics in organs other than the liver.
Significant regional disparities in riverine microplastics

Abstract:Research on riverine microplastics has gradually increased, highlighting an area for further exploration: the lack of extensive, large-scale regional variations analysis due to methodological and spatiotemporal limitations. Herein, we constructed and applied a comprehensive framework for synthesizing and analyzing literature data on riverine microplastics to enable comparative research on the regional variations on a large scale. Research results showed that in 76 rivers primarily located in Asia, Europe, and North America, the microplastic abundance of surface water in Asian rivers was three times higher than that in Euro-America rivers, while sediment in Euro-American rivers was five times more microplastics than Asia rivers, indicating significant regional variations (p < 0.001). Additionally, based on the income levels of countries, rivers in lower-middle and upper-middle income countries had significantly (p < 0.001) higher abundance of microplastics in surface water compared to high-income countries, while the opposite was true for sediment. This phenomenon was preliminarily attributed to varying levels of urbanization across countries. Our proposed framework for synthesizing and analyzing microplastic literature data provides a holistic understanding of microplastic disparities in the environment, and can facilitate broader discussions on management and mitigation strategies.
Source Identification of Microplastics in Highly Urbanized River Environments and Its Implications for Watershed Management

Abstract:The extensive use of plastic products has resulted in a significant influx of microplastics into aquatic ecosystems, particularly in highly urbanized areas and their associated river environments. However, the specific pathways and quantities through which these microplastics enter the river environment are still unclear, which poses a challenge in developing effective measures to mitigate their sources. In this paper, the spatiotemporal variations of microplastics from different sources in highly urbanized rivers within the Shenzhen Bay watershed were investigated through field sampling, experimental and statistical analysis, and the measures of microplastic reduction were discussed. The observation results exhibited a negative logarithmic correlation between the abundance of microplastics in river water and monthly rainfall (R = 0.994, MSE = 0.051, p < 0.05). When the monthly rainfall was <6 mm, the abundance of microplastics was absolutely dependent on point sources. While the rainfall exceeded 470 mm, the abundance was absolutely predominantly influenced by nonpoint source microplastics. The annual load of microplastics from the watershed was 5.39 × 1012 items, of which 61.6 % originated from point sources. Among the microplastics from point sources, 92.1 % were derived from fibers generated by textile washing. Fragmented microplastics (41.9 %) were the most common type of microplastics from nonpoint sources, primarily originating from the disintegration and weathering of disposable plastics. In the future, there is an expectation to reduce the microplastic load in the watershed to 15.9 % of the total by improving sewage treatment processes and infrastructure. This study can provide scientific guidance for environmental planning and serve as a warning regarding the impact of microplastics on ecosystems in urbanized areas.

Abstract:Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be important point sources of microplastic pollution in the environment because they discharge large volumes of microplastic-containing effluents into nearby rivers. However, the fate of these microplastics once they enter the urban rivers is not well understood. The present study focused on the Qing River, a typical urban river in Beijing that receives effluents from four nearby WWTPs. We investigated the microplastic pollution profile both at the effluent outfalls from the WWTPs and in the river. Using micro Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we identified and confirmed a total of 18 polymers from the river and effluent outfalls. The microplastics were then separated into four categories based on their shapes with the fragment group being the most abundant, followed by the fiber, film, and pellet groups. Abundance of microplastics was found to be slightly higher in the main body of the Qing River when sampled in November than in July. However, abundance levels from the effluent outfalls were similar in November and in July. Significant amounts of microplastics in the Qing river, up to 80%, were retained upstream of dams that are used for water storage. This result was also confirmed by a decrease in the polymer-diversity index downstream of the dams compared to upstream. A preliminary conclusion could be drawn that the microplastics in the Qing River are mainly released from the WWTPs and that most of these microplastics are retained in the river by dams.

Abstract:To clarify the role of the TNFRSF11B gene encoding osteoprotegerin (OPG), in Paget's disease of bone (PDB) we studied TNFRSF11B polymorphisms in an association study of 690 UK subjects and in a worldwide familial study of 66 kindreds. We found that the G1181 allele of TNFRSF11B, encoding lysine at codon 3 of the OPG protein, predisposes to both sporadic and familial PDB.

Abstract:Riverine outflow is one of the major pathways for microplastic transportation to coastal environments. Research on the output of microplastics in small- or medium-sized rivers will help accurately understand the status of their marine loads. In this study, we used both trawling and pumping methods to collect microplastics of different sizes in the Jiulong River Estuary and Xiamen Bay. We found that the abundance of small microplastics (44 μm–5.0 mm) was at least 20 times higher than the large particles (0.33–5.0 mm). The abundance of the large particles ranges from 4.96 to 16.3 particles/m 3 , and that of the small particles ranged from 82.8 to 918 particles/m 3 . Granule was the dominant shape (>60%), and polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most common components. The riverine flux of small microplastics (44 μm–5 mm, 472 ± 230 t/y) was at a medium level and was eight times greater than that of large particles (0.33–5.0 mm, 61.2 ± 2.6 t/y). The behavior of the large microplastics was relatively conservative, whose abundance had a significant correlation with salinity ( R 2 = 0.927) and was mainly influenced by physical factors. In contrast, results of statistical analysis revealed that more complicated factors influenced the small microplastics.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution in the Yangtze River Basin has become a major concern; however, the variations in different environmental compartments are unknown. Here, we compiled published information including detection methods, occurrence, and characterization of microplastics from 624 sampling sites in river water, river sediment, lake and reservoir water, and lake and reservoir sediment in the Yangtze River Basin. The spatial distribution of sampling sites shows fractal pattern and was uniformly concentrated around the main stream of the Yangtze River and the lake geographical zone. Collection, pretreatment, identification, and quantification processes varied among different studies. Non-parametric tests were performed to compare the different microplastic indices. A Pearson correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between microplastic pollution and local socioeconomic conditions. We found that the microplastic size and abundance distribution in river water and lake and reservoir water showed different patterns for different sampling methods, indicating that different methods influenced the results. Population density and urbanization rate are suggested to be important factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of microplastic abundances in water, rather than in sediment. The microplastic abundances in lake and reservoir water were higher than that in river water in bulk samples. However, microplastic abundances among different sediment environments shows no significant difference. For bulk water samples and sediment samples overall, the proportion of small microplastics (<1 mm, i.e. SMP), fibers, transparent debris, and polypropylene (PP) were 65.1%, 67.8%, 31.8%, and 29.7%, respectively. The microplastic characteristics of lake and reservoir water and sediment were similar, differing from those of river water and sediment. This study provides the first basin scale insight into microplastic occurrence and characteristics in different environments in the Yangtze River Basin.

Abstract:Riverine microplastic (MP) discharge into the ocean contributes greatly to global MP contamination, yet our understanding of this process remains primitive. To deepen our interpretation of the dynamic MP variation throughout the estuarine water columns, we sampled at Xuliujing, the saltwater intrusion node of the Yangtze River Estuary, over the course of ebb and flood tides in four seasons (July and October 2017, January and May 2018 respectively). We observed that the collision of downstream and upstream currents contributed to the high MP concentration and that the mean MP abundance fluctuated with the tide. A model of microplastics residual net flux (MPRF-MODEL), taking the seasonal abundance and vertical distribution of MP along with current velocity into consideration, was developed to predict the net flux of MP throughout the full water columns. 2154 ± 359.7 t/year of MP was estimated to flow into the East China Sea via the River in 2017-2018. Our study suggests that riverine MP flux can be overestimated due to reciprocating current carried MP from the estuary. Using the tidal and seasonal variation in MP distribution, we calculated the tide impact factor index (TIFI) for the Yangtze River Estuary to be between 38.11% and 58.05%. In summary, this study provides a baseline of MP flux research in the Yangtze River for similar tidal-controlled rivers and a contextual understanding of how to appropriately sample and accurately estimate in a dynamic estuary system. The redistribution of microplastics may be impacted by complex tide processes. Although not observed in this study, it may merit investigation.

Abstract:Microplastics contamination in the environment is a global problem, but little is known about their dynamics in urban river networks, an important site of microplastics occurrence and harboring complex transport pathways. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamic of microplastics in a typical urban river network in eastern China from December 2018 to September 2019. microplastics abundance (mean +/- standard deviation) in the river network ranged from 2.3 +/- 1.2 to 104.6 +/- 5.6 particles/L and was significantly higher during the wet than during the dry season. The distribution of microplastics in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river network did not significantly differ, nor did the abundance of microplastics in the surface water vs. the bottom water. However, high abundances were determined in commercial and industrial areas, at a wastewater treatment plant outlet, in an urban canal, and in an urban-rural fringe area. The seasonal dynamics of the overall abundance of microplastics could be explained by the hysteresis effect of urban plastic production and the variation in regional precipitation. 78.2% of the microplastics were < 330 mu m in size; the most common colors were blue and black, and the most common shapes were fragments and fibers. The polymer types of the microplastics were assessed using laser direct infrared (LDIR), a novel chemical imaging system that identified silicone, rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polypropylene as the main components of the microplastics. A non metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) based on the abundance of the polymer components across samples showed aggregations of sampling sites, that indicated the possible sources of the microplastics. Our study provides insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of microplastics in an urban river network and suggests the potential of LDIR in the accurate quantitative analysis of microplastics in the environment.
Occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in the Haihe River: An investigation of a seagoing river flowing through a megacity in northern China

Abstract:Freshwater systems serve as important sources and transportation routes for marine microplastic pollution, and inadequate attention has been paid to this situation. Data on microplastic pollution of typical seagoing rivers in northern China are lacking. In the current study, we investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in the main stream of the Haihe River, which flows through a metropolis with a high population density and level of industrialization and then flows into the Bohai Sea. The microplastic samples were collected by manta trawls with pore sizes of 333 mm, and the microplastic concentrations ranged from 0.69 to 74.95 items/m(3). Fibers dominated in the surface water of the Haihe River; their shapes that were categorized as fibers, film, foam, fragments, and spheres, and contributed 17.4-86.7% of the total microplastics studied. The size distribution of the microplastics was concentrated in a range of 100-1000 mu m, with 54.7% of the total sizes corresponding to the 333-mu m trawl. Micro-Fourier transform infrared (mu-FT-IR) spectra showed that the main components were polyethylene, poly(ethylene-propylene) copolymer, and polypropylene. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) measurements revealed scratches, micropores, and cracks on the surfaces of the microplastics due to mechanical friction, chemical oxidation and degradation processes. The results of this study confirmed the high abundance and high diversity of microplastics in an urban river and indicated appreciable impacts from point-source inputs on the microplastic pollution, such as effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Abstract:A helium-cooled lead lithium blanket has been proposed as a European liquid-metal test blanket module for the experimental campaign in the international thermonuclear experimental reactor ITER. The current design consists of columns of rectangular boxes called breeder units filled with the liquid-metal PbLi. The blanket modules are placed in the region of the strong plasma-confining magnetic field, which causes intense interactions of the flowing liquid metal with induced currents and creates Lorentz forces opposing the flow. Under emergency conditions, the liquid metal has to be removed from the blanket as fast as possible to minimize losses to the surrounding. In case of a leak, the liquid metal has to flow out, driven only by its own weight. This paper analyzes the draining by gravity under the conservative assumption that the magnetic field is not switched off. The geometric elements creating the major magnetohydrodynamics resistance to the draining fluid are identified to support further improvements in the design.

Abstract:Urban surface runoff (USR) and drainage system overflows during wet weather (WWF) play a key role in shaping water pollution. Particularly, the impact of large amounts of microplastic pollution on urban water bodies is unclear. We conducted an in-field investigation in six central urban drainage systems along Suzhou Creek in the Shanghai megacity of China and identified the impacts of storm factors and land use on the real-time dynamic changes in microplastic abundance and characteristics in USR and WWF. Microplastic abundances ranged from 228.3 ± 105.4–4969.51 ± 348.8, 309.3 ± 144.3–5195.8 ± 425.5, and 130.0 ± 30.0–8500.0 ± 1241.0 particles/L in the traffic and residential catchment USR, and the WWF, respectively. Under similar storm factor conditions, we observed correlations between environmental factors and microplastic abundance, especially the polymer type, verifying the significant role of land use. The microplastic abundance were 90.2 particles/L higher in the traffic catchment USR than in the residential catchment USR. Notably, we found unique microplastic polymers comprising ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and thermoplastic elastomers in the residential and traffic catchment USR, respectively. However, land use had a minimum impact on the size and shape of microplastics: small-sized and film microplastics dominated in both USR types. We found statistical evidence of the widespread correlations between microplastic abundance and storm factors (accumulated storm depth and WWF flow) in both USR and WWF. The first flush phenomenon of microplastic dynamics was found in both USR and WWF. Microplastic characteristics also changed dynamically with storm time. With heavy storm factors, polypropylene and small-sized (<1 mm) microplastics in USR events increased and then decreased. This was also true for WWF events in granular and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics. Our results can facilitate the targeted mitigation of emerging pollutants to enhance stormwater management strategies and prevent future contamination.
