Abstract:Revealing the photocatalytic mechanism between various junctions and catalytic activities has become a hotspot in photocatalytic systems. Herein, an internal molecular heptazine/triazine (H/T) junction in crystalline carbon nitride (HTCN) is constructed and devoted to selective two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) for efficient hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) production. In-situ X-ray diffraction spectra under various temperatures authenticate the successful formation of molecular H/T junction in HTCN during the calcining process rather than physically mixing. The increased surface photovoltage and transient photovoltage signals, and the decreased exciton binding energy undoubtably elucidate that an obvious increasement of carrier density and diffusion capability of photogenerated electrons are realized over HTCN. Additionally, the analyses of in situ photoirradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy and femto-second transient absorption spectra reveal the successful construction of the strong internal built-in-electric field and the existence of the majority of long-lived shallow trapped electrons associated with molecular H/T junction over HTCN, respectively. Benefiting from these, the photocatalytic results exhibit an incredible improvement (96.5-fold) for H2 O2 production. This novel work provides a comprehensive understanding of the long-lived reactive charges in molecular H/T junctions for strengthening the driving-force for photocatalytic H2 O2 production, which opens potential applications for enhancing PCN-based photocatalytic redox reactions.
A Covalent Organic Framework Bearing Single Ni Sites As a Synergistic Photocatalyst for Selective Photoreduction of CO2 to CO

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into energy-rich carbon compounds has attracted increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to selectively and effectively convert CO2 to a desirable reaction product. Herein, we report a design of a synergistic photocatalyst for selective reduction of CO2 to CO by using a covalent organic framework bearing single Ni sites (Ni-TpBpy), in which electrons transfer from photosensitizer to Ni sites for CO production by the activated CO2 reduction under visible-light irradiation. Ni-TpBpy exhibits an excellent activity, giving a 4057 μmol g-1 of CO in a 5 h reaction with a 96% selectivity over H2 evolution. More importantly, when the CO2 partial pressure was reduced to 0.1 atm, 76% selectivity for CO production is still obtained. Theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the promising catalytic activity and selectivity are ascribed to synergistic effects of single Ni catalytic sites and TpBpy, in which the TpBpy not only serves as a host for CO2 molecules and Ni catalytic sites but also facilitates the activation of CO2 and inhibits the competitive H2 evolution.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

Stable Heterometallic Cluster-Based Organic Framework Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

Abstract:A series of stable heterometallic Fe2 M cluster-based MOFs (NNU-31-M, M=Co, Ni, Zn) photocatalysts are presented. They can achieve the overall conversion of CO2 and H2 O into HCOOH and O2 without the assistance of additional sacrificial agent and photosensitizer. The heterometallic cluster units and photosensitive ligands excited by visible light generate separated electrons and holes. Then, low-valent metal M accepts electrons to reduce CO2 , and high-valent Fe uses holes to oxidize H2 O. This is the first MOF photocatalyst system to finish artificial photosynthetic full reaction. It is noted that NNU-31-Zn exhibits the highest HCOOH yield of 26.3 μmol g-1 h-1 (selectivity of ca. 100 %). Furthermore, the DFT calculations based on crystal structures demonstrate the photocatalytic reaction mechanism. This work proposes a new strategy for how to design crystalline photocatalyst to realize artificial photosynthetic overall reaction.
Integration of Plasmonic Ag(I) Clusters and Fe(II) Porphyrinates into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Coupling with Photosynthesis of Pure H2O2

Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with the photosynthesis of pure H2O2 is a challenging and significant task. Herein, using classical CO2 photoreduction site iron porphyrinate as the linker, Ag(I) clusters were spatially separated and evenly distributed within a new metal-organic framework (MOF), namely Ag27TPyP-Fe. With water as electron donors, Ag27TPyP-Fe exhibited remarkable performances in artificial photosynthetic overall reaction with CO yield of 36.5 μmol g-1 h-1 and ca. 100% selectivity, as well as H2O2 evolution rate of 35.9 μmol g-1 h-1. Since H2O2 in the liquid phase can be more readily separated from the gaseous products of CO2 photoreduction, high-purity H2O2 with a concentration up to 0.1 mM was obtained. Confirmed by theoretical calculations and the established energy level diagram, the reductive iron(II) porphyrinates and oxidative Ag(I) clusters within an integrated framework functioned synergistically to achieve artificial photosynthesis. Furthermore, photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that the robust connection of Ag(I) clusters and iron porphyrinate ligands facilitated efficient charge separation and rapid electron transfer, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Reducing CO2 into fuels via photochemical reactions relies on highly efficient photocatalytic systems. Herein, we report a new and efficient photocatalytic system for CO2 reduction. Driven by electrostatic attraction, an anionic metal–organic framework Cu-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) as host and a cationic photosensitizer [Ru(phen)3]2+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) as guest were self-assembled into a photocatalytic system , which showed high activity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction under laboratory light source (CO production rate of 130(5) mmol g–1 h–1, selectivity of 92.9%) or natural sunlight (CO production rate of 69.5 mmol g–1 h–1, selectivity of 91.3%), representing the remarkable photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. More importantly, the photosensitizer [Ru(phen)3]2+ in is only about 1/500 in quantity reported in the literature. Abstract:Nanoparticle photosensitizers possess technical advantages for photocatalytic reactions due to enhanced light harvesting and efficient charge transport. Here we report synthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles through covalent coupling and assembly of metalloporphyrin with condensed carbon nitride. The resultant nanoparticles consist of light harvesting component from the condensed carbon nitride and photocatalytic sites from the metalloporphyrins. This synergetic particle system effectively initiates efficient charge separation and transport and exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction. The CO production rate can reach up to 57 µmol/(gh) with a selectivity of 79% over competing H2 evolution. Controlled experiments demonstrate that the combination of light harvesting with photocatalytic activity via covalent assembly is crucial for the high photocatalytic activity. Due to effective charge separation and transfer, the resultant nanoparticle photocatalysts show exceptional photo stability against photo-corrosion under light irradiation, enabling for long-term utilization. This research opens a new way for the development of stable, effective nanoparticle photocatalysts using naturally abundant porphyrin pigments.

Abstract:One of the many attempts to stop the danger of tobacco smoking is the development of an anti-smoking vaccine using nicotine butyric acid (NBA) linked to a carrier protein to produce anti-nicotine antibodies. NBA is a chiral molecule and there is a need to obtain a high degree of enantiomeric purity. The aim of this work is to develop a novel method for the enantioseparation of NBA and the determination of trace amounts of enantiomeric impurity required by regulatory authorities. This was achieved successfully using high-performance capillary electrophoresis combined with label-free intrinsic imaging as new imaging technology. A 50 μm id fused-silica capillary was used with UV detection at λ(214 ) nm and label-free intrinsic imaging. The background electrolyte consisted of highly sulphated β-cyclodextrin 10% m/V as a chiral selector in 75 mM phosphoric acid-triethylamine at pH 7.0. Baseline separation and detection of 0.1% and possibly less of the unwanted impurity (R-enantiomer) were achieved. Also, the detection limits were calculated for both enantiomers. The use of label-free intrinsic imaging has improved the sensitivity, enabling us to detect trace amounts of enantiomeric impurities.

Abstract:The solar-driven hydrogen evolution from water splitting provides an ideal protocol for alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is often limited by poor light-absorption ability, sluggish electron-hole kinetics, and ineffective charge transfer. Herein, a pyridine-contained covalent triazine framework was delicately designed to facilitate single-atom Co immobilization (Co 1 -PCTF), exhibiting an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 2562.4 μmol‧g -1 ‧h -1 , which is much higher than that of the pristine CTF. It has been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the introduction of the pyridine ring significantly enhanced the π-conjugation degree, optimizing the band structure and extending the visible-light absorption. The highly dispersed Co atoms show notable electron-rich property, promoting charge separation and offering abundant active sites for H + reduction. Additionally, the robust Co-N bridge with a large potential difference creates a built-in electronic field for efficient directional transfer from organic substrate to the Co site. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of CTF-based advanced photocatalysts with high activity and durability.

Abstract:During allergen immunotherapy (AIT), the allergic patient is exposed to the disease-inducing antigens (allergens) in order to induce clinical and immunological tolerance and obtain disease modification. Large trials of grass AIT with highly standardized subcutaneous and sublingual tablet vaccines have been conducted to document the clinical effect. Induction of blocking antibodies as well as changes in the balance between T-cell phenotypes, including induction of regulatory T-cell subtypes, have been demonstrated for both treatment types. These observations increase the understanding of the immunological mechanism behind the clinical effect and may make it possible to use the immunological changes as biomarkers of clinical effect. The current review describes the recent mechanistic findings for subcutaneous immunotherapy and sublingual immunotherapy/tablet treatment and discusses how the observed immunological changes translate into a scientific foundation for the observed clinical effects of grass pollen immunotherapy and lead to new treatment strategies for grass AIT.

Abstract:To solve serious energy and environmental crises caused by rapid industrial development, the formation of heterostructured photocatalysts is a promising approach for efficient and scalable H2 production from water splitting. In this study, a strategy for the synthesis of triphenylphosphine-based covalent organic framework (P-COF-1)/covalent triazine framework (CTF) 2D–2D heterojunctions via intermolecular π–π interactions has been reported. The experimental results show that the H2 production rate of the 5% P-COF-1/CTF heterojunction exhibits 14,100 μmol h–1 g–1, which is 2.5–2.6 times as much as that of pure CTF and the mechanical mixture (5% P-COF-1 + CTF). Based on the results of characterization and theoretical calculations, a possible mechanism to well explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the Type II heterojunction system has been proposed. Abstract:With rapid industrial development, the increasing energy consumption has led to severe environmental pollution. Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting has been considered as a plausible solution to the energy crisis. However, highly-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution remains a great challenge. Therefore, it is in urgent need to develop novel photocatalysts with broad visible absorption, stable structure, elevated photoinduced photon separation and transfer rates, and strong reduction power. Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) may present an ideal platform for highly-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their structural designability, which allows the integration of light-sensitive organic monomers, and their long-range ordered molecular arrangement that can facilitate interlayer electron transfer over amorphous materials. In this study, we design and synthesize two porphyrin-based 2D COFs, namely, TPB-TAPP-COF and TFPPY-TAPP-COF that have a similar structure but different cores with distinct conjugation levels. The photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiencies of TPB-TAPP-COF and TFPPY-TAPP-COF materials are investigated. Our results indicate that the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency is 4244.2 μmol g1 h1 for TPB-TAPP-COF and 8700.2 μmol g1 h1 for TFPPY-TAPP-COF, suggesting that the degree of conjugation of COFs strongly affects the efficiency of charge transport and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The results provide valuable insights into the rational design of photocatalytic materials with high efficiency in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The low efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production from water is mainly suffer from limited light absorption, charge separation and water delivery to the active centers. Herein, an inorganic-organic Z-scheme heterojunction (CdS-COF-Ni) is constructed by in-situ growth of CdS nanosheets on the porphyrin-based covalent organic framework with nickel ions (COF-Ni) in the porphyrin centers. A built-in electric field is formed at the interface, which accelerates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Moreover, through the surface protonation treatment in ascorbic acid (AC) solution, the hydrophilicity of the obtained composite is obviously increased and facilitates the transport of water molecules to the photocatalytic centers. Under the synergistic effect of the interfacial interaction and surface protonation treatment, the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate is optimized to be 18.23 mmol h-1 g-1 without adding any cocatalysts, which is 21 times that of CdS. After a series of photoelectrochemical measurements, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is found that the photocatalytic charge transfer pathway conforms to the Z-scheme mechanism, which not only greatly accelerates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, but also retains a high reduction capacity for water splitting. This work offers a good strategy for constructing highly efficient organic-inorganic heterojunctions for water splitting.

Abstract:The photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into chemical fuels represents a promising approach for solving the future energy crisis. However, the construction of a photocatalyst simultaneously integrating a photosensitizer and molecular cocatalyst with intramolecular electron delivery is challenging. Herein, we designed covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with excellent extended conjugation and potential embedded redox active sites. The full -C = C- bridging in sp2c-COFdpy creates and dredges the donor-acceptor channel for intramolecular electron delocalization and a cascade effect. Interestingly, CO2 photoreduction can be carried out in water, and the optimized sp2c-COFdpy-Co exhibits the highest activity and stability among COFs without noble metal involvement, achieving up to 17.93 mmol g−1 CO with 81.4 % selectivity in a long-range reaction. Theoretical calculations and experimental data suggest that the structural advantages enable excitons to facilely reach single Co sites via the electron cascade, which provides a new concept in the nanoarchitecture of COFs for efficient CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques of converting CO2 into high-value compounds and/or fuels. However, the performance of most current photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts is less than satisfactory for practical applications. Here, we synthesized a heterogeneous structure by integrating Cu2O and a porphyrin hydrogen-bonded organic framework (PFC-45), which was then fabricated into a thin-film catalyst on carbolic paper (CP) using a facile electrophoretic deposition technology. With improved electron-hole separation efficiency and visible-light-harvesting ability, this film (PFC-45/Cu2O@CP) significantly enhanced CO2-to-CO photoreduction, exceeding 2.4 and 3.2 times that of PFC-45@CP and PFC-45/Cu2O particles, respectively. Remarkably, PFC-45/Cu2O@CP also exhibited high selectivity (99%) and outstanding activity (11.81 μmol g-1 h-1) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in pure water without any sacrificial agent. This work demonstrates a new strategy to design photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels stands at the forefront of promising applications for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), but the rapid recombination of photo-induced charge carriers within these frameworks poses a significant challenge to their photo-catalytic performance. Despite heterojunction construction has potential as a viable approach, its synthesis involves considerable complexity. Here, we present a distinct and well-defined phase junction based on polymorphic MOFs, achieved through an efficient one-pot synthesis process. This work not only paves the way for a robust platform for designing sophisticated MOFs complexes, but also illuminates the intricate hierarchical structure-function dynamics inherent in MOFs. The fabricated PCN-222-Ni@PCN-224-Ni (P@P) hybrid material exhibits extensive surface area, a porous matrix, and superior crystallinity. The harmonious alignment of the bandgap between PCN-222-Ni and PCN-224-Ni, establishing a phase junction for type-II carrier transfer, endows the resultant photocatalysts with exceptional visible-light-induced photoreduction capabilities for CO 2 , along with augmented stability. This significant advancement represents a significant milestone in the applications of MOFs, especially in harnessing solar energy for the production of sustainable chemical fuels through the process of CO 2 photo-conversion.

Abstract:Inorganic photocatalyst-enzyme systems are a prominent platform for the photoreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels. However, poor electron transfer kinetics and enzyme deactivation by reactive oxygen species in the photoexcitation process severely limit catalytic efficiency. In chloroplast, enzymatic CO2 reduction and photoexcitation are compartmentalized by the thylakoid membrane, which protects enzymes from photodamage, while the tightly integrated photosystem facilitates electron transfer, promoting photocatalysis. By mimicking this strategy, we constructed a novel functionally compartmental inorganic photocatalyst-enzyme system for CO2 reduction to formate. To accomplish efficient electron transfer, we first synthesized an integrated artificial photosystem by conjugation of the cocatalyst (a Rh complex) onto thiophene-modified C3N4 (TPE-C3N4), demonstrating an NADH regeneration rate of 9.33 μM·min-1, 2.33 times higher than that of a homogeneous counterpart. The enhanced NADH regeneration activity was caused by the tightly conjugated structure of the artificial photosystem, enabling rapid electron transfer from TPE-C3N4 to the Rh complex. To protect formate dehydrogenase (FDH) from photoinduced deactivation, FDH was encapsulated into MAF-7, a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, to compartmentalize FDH from the toxic photoexcitation process, similar to the function of the thylakoid membrane. Moreover, the triazole linkers of MAF-7 possess both hydrophilicity and pH-buffering capacity providing a stable microenvironment for FDH, which could enhance enzyme stability in photosynthesis. The synergy between the enhanced electron transfer of TPE-C3N4 for NADH cofactor regeneration and MOF-protection of the redox enzyme enables the construction of a functionally compartmental inorganic photocatalyst-enzyme association system, promoting CO2 photoconversion to formic acid with a yield of 16.75 mM after 9 h of illumination, 3.24 times greater than that of the homogeneous reaction counterpart.

Abstract:The redox reaction centers in natural organisms conducting oxygenic photosynthesis are well arranged in a physically separated manner to convert sunlight into chemical energy efficiently. Mimicking natural photosynthesis via precisely constructing oxidative and reductive reaction centers within photocatalysts is ideal for enhancing catalytic performances in artificial photosynthesis. In this study, new covalent heptazine frameworks (CHFs) with spatially separated redox centers are rationally designed for photocatalytic production of H2 O2 from water and oxygen without using any sacrificial agents. Both experimental and computational investigations indicate that the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction occurs on the heptazine moiety, whereas the two-electron water oxidation reaction occurs on the acetylene or diacetylene bond in the CHFs. This unique spatial separation feature is critical for enhancing charge separation and achieving efficient H2 O2 production. Meanwhile, the measured exciton binding energy of the diacetylene-containing polymer is merely 24 meV. Under simulated solar irradiation, the rationally designed CHFs can achieve a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.78%, surpassing previously reported photocatalytic materials. This study establishes a molecular engineering approach to construct periodically arranged and spatially separated redox centers in single-component polymer photocatalysts, representing a hallmark to create more exciting polymer structures for photocatalysis moving forward.

Abstract:Photoactive artificial nanocatalysts that mimic natural photoenergy systems can yield clean and renewable energy. However, their poor photoabsorption capability and disfavored photogenic electron-hole recombination hinder their production. Herein, we designed two nanocatalysts with various microstructures by combining the tailored self-assembly of the meso-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl) porphine photosensitizer with the growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The porphyrin photoabsorption antenna efficiently extended the absorption range of TiO2 in the visible region, while anatase TiO2 promoted the efficient electron-hole separation of porphyrin. The photo-induced electrons were transferred to the surface of the Pt co-catalyst for the generation of hydrogen via water splitting, and the hole was utilized for the decomposition of methyl orange dye. The hybrid structure showed greatly increased photocatalytic performance compared to the core@shell structure due to massive active sites and increased photo-generated electron output. This controlled assembly regulation provides a new approach for the fabrication of advanced, structure-dependent photocatalysts.
