Abstract:-Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens Nutt.) is a native monocarpic plant species of Sandhills prairie. We concurrently tested three biological interactions that could influence its recruitment and population density: (1) predispersal flower and seed consumption by insects; (2) postdispersal loss of seeds to vertebrates, and (3) seedling competition with established plants. Few previous experimental studies have analyzed more than one of these processes at a time. Each interaction had a significant negative impact on seedling establishment. Insect seed predation caused major losses that were magnified in each succeeding life history stage. A 3-fold reduction in viable seeds by insects led to a 6-fold decrease in seedling establishment and a 6to 37-fold reduction in the eventual number of new adults. Germination was low (1.7%) and 80% of the seedlings were in exclosure cages, particularly in those cages placed in an open disturbed area instead of in the grassland. Competition between seedlings and established grasses led to a 9.5-fold decrease in seedling survival. Platte thistle populations were thus limited successively, first by seed predation and then by competition with established grasses. Both processes therefore reinforce selection for the fugitive life history observed in this species.
Comparison of Various Surface Treatment Procedures on the Roughness and Susceptibility to Staining of Provisional Prosthodontic Materials

Abstract:Esthetically pleasing temporary prostheses are often necessary for extended periods in a variety of clinical scenarios. Adjustments to the occlusion or margins are commonly needed before cementing the temporary prosthesis. Therefore, it is clinically necessary to repolish the rough surface to avoid biological and esthetic issues associated with rough surfaces. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the impact of various polishing protocols on the surface roughness and color stability of three resin materials used for provisional crowns. A total of 150 specimens were fabricated from auto-polymerizing polymethyl methacrylate, bis-acryl composite, and Methyl methacrylate-LC resin using a stainless steel mold. Each material group was divided into five groups (n = 10) based on the applied surface treatment: positive control group (G1): no roughening or surface treatment, Negative control group (G2): acrylic bur-roughened surface without any polishing, the different surface treatment groups of silicon carbide and aluminum oxide stone polishing (G3), diamond-coated rubber twist (G4), and Surface Glaze (G5). An optical profilometer was used to assess the surface roughness of all samples. After undergoing 6000 cycles of thermocycling followed by immersion in a coffee solution for 15 days at 37 °C, color parameters were measured using a spectrophotometer both before and after a storage period to evaluate color differences. A two-way ANOVA test with α = 0.05 significance level was carried out to determine the impacts of both the materials utilized and the polishing protocol. Among the three types of resin examined, the bisacryl group exhibited superior surface quality in positive control groups, while PMMA resin demonstrated higher polishability. The diamond-coated rubber twits resulted in lower Ra values of 0.36 (0.01) µm, 0.52 (0.11) µm, and 0.28 (0.05) µm for PMMA, BAMA, and MMLC resins, respectively. The application of photo-polymerized surface glaze led to a plaque accumulation threshold of 0.2 µm across all resin groups. The greatest mean color change occurred in the negative control group, indicating a propensity for more staining on rougher surfaces. The Bisacryl resin exhibited higher ΔE values, whereas PMMA showed better color stability. The lowest ΔE values were found when the surface glaze was applied to all of the provisional crown resins. Untreated Bisacryl resin exhibited the lowest Ra values, while PMMA resins demonstrated superior surface morphology after polishing. PMMA provisional crown resins showed increased resistance to staining. The use of surface glaze enhanced both smoothness and color stability on the surfaces.

Comparative analysis of various temporary computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing polymethyl methacrylate crown materials based on color stability, flexural strength, and surface roughness: An in vitro study

Abstract:With recent advancements in digital dentistry, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) processed prostheses have been in very much use recently. This study aims to assess and compare the properties of these materials to better enable the practitioners to select the type of materials for use in a normal clinical practice. This research study was commenced after the approval by our Institutional Review Board (IHEC/SDC/PROSTHO/21/119). Twelve specimens of each group (group 1: CAD/CAM milled prostheses and group 2: three-dimensional (3D) printed prostheses using rapid prototyping) were prepared using the ISO standardization 10477:2004. The flexural strength of the samples that were prepared was tested using a universal testing machine and the values obtained were evaluated. Other samples (ISO standardized) were collected for evaluation of color changes postaging and surface roughness of both groups. Unpaired t -test to analyze flexural strength and surface roughness and Paired t -test was used to statistically analyze the values obtained for color stability. Group 1 showed significantly higher flexural strength and significantly better color stability when the samples were subjected to thermocycling. The mean strength obtained for 3D printed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was 80.06MPa, whereas the mean flexural strength recorded for milled PMMA was 128.32 MPa. There was not much difference observed in the surface roughness of both groups. CAD/CAM milled specimens presented with better color stability and strength when compared to 3D printed specimens. Practitioners should be cautious while using three-dimensionally printed temporary prostheses in the posterior tooth region.
3D-printed resins for provisional dental restorations: Comparison of mechanical and biological properties

Abstract:Objectives: To characterize the mechanical and biological properties of three commercially available resins, which are currently used for provisional restorations and to compare them to an experimental resin intended for definitive fixed dental prostheses. Materials and methods: Three commercially available resins: Crowntec (CT, Saremco), Temporary C&B (FL, Formlabs), C&B MFH (ND, Nextdent), and the experimental resin: Permanent Bridge (PB, Saremco) were printed and subjected to biaxial flexural strength test, finite element analysis, Weibull analysis, scanning electron microscopy, cell proliferation, immunohistochemistry and cytotoxicity assays. Samples from CT, PB, and ND were provided directly from the manufacturers ensuring ideal workflow. FL was printed using the workflow as recommended by the manufacturer, using a Formlabs 2 printer and their post-processing units Form Wash and Form Cure. Results: From the tested resins, PB yielded the best overall results in terms of mechanical properties. Cell proliferation and cytotoxicity did not show any significant differences among materials. PB showed higher values for probability of survival predictions (35%) when subjected to 250 MPa loads, whereas the other materials did not reach 10%. Significance: Despite mechanical differences between the evaluated materials, the outcomes suggest that 3D printed provisional resins may be used in clinical settings, following the manufacturers indications. New materials intended for long-term use, such as the PB resin, yielded higher mechanical properties compared to the other materials. Alternative printing and post-processing methods have not yet been evaluated and should be avoided until further literature is available. Clinical significance: 3D printed resins for provisional restorations have become popular with the emergence of new technologies. In this study, we evaluated three different commercially available resins for provisional restorations and one new experimental resin. The results from this study indicate that commercially available resins could be used in clinical settings under certain conditions and limited periods of time. Following the manufacturers protocols is of paramount importance to not compromise these properties.

Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of providing a provisional restoration includes immediate replacement of missing teeth, for protection of pulp and maintenance of periodontal health, to maintain occlusal stability, to preserve the position of the teeth and for masticatory efficiency. Provisional restorations fabricated from heat processed acrylic resin have been used successfully. Incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles into Polymethyl Methacrylates (PMMA) resin has been shown to improve its physical properties. Aim: To evaluate and compare the flexural strength of heat polymerised PMMA provisional restorative resin reinforced with different percentages of silanised zirconium oxide nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: This is an in-vitro study performed in the Department of Prosthodontics, VSPM’s Dental College and Research Centre, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, from June 2018 to February 2020. A die was used to create sixty heatcured PMMA resin specimens, which were then divided into four groups: group A includes controls with conventional heat polymerised provisional restorative resin (PMMA) and groups B, C and D conventional heat polymerised provisional restorative resin reinforced with different percentages of silanised zirconium oxide nanoparticles (1 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 5 wt%, respectively), having fifteen specimens in each group. Three point bending tests were conducted on all samples using a universal testing machine. The flexural strength of each specimen was calculated. Mean value of flexural strength of each group was used for statistical analysis. One-way analysis of variance test was used to find out the mean value of flexural strength of each group. Results: The mean flexural strength for control group was 53.76±2.97 MPa. For group B (1% Zirconium oxide) it was 58.14±4.86 MPa, for group C (2.5% Zirconium oxide) was 63.29±4.22 and for group D (5% Zirconium oxide) it was 59.02±3.99 MPa. Statistical analysis showed that maximum strength was obtained by reinforcement with 2.5% silanised zirconium oxide nanoparticles. Conclusion: Polymethyl methacrylate reinforced with silanised 2.5% of zirconium oxide nanoparticles promises to be better material in terms of flexural strength.

Mechanical and thermal properties of PMMA resin composites for interim fixed prostheses reinforced with calcium β-pyrophosphate

Abstract:Interim restorations are essential in fixed prosthodontics as they provide temporary protection of teeth before the insertion of the permanent restoration. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely used in the fabrication of interim-fixed restorations as it is a biocompatible material with a lot of convenient properties. However, it exhibits low impact and tensile strength and therefore it is necessary to be reinforced. Calcium β-pyrophosphate (β-CPP) is considered a promising reinforcing material for dental applications, especially for enamel regeneration due to its stability at low pH and its low wear rate. The aim of this study was to manufacture PMMA/β-CPP composites suitable for fixed-interim restorations and to study their mechanical and thermal properties. In order to enhance β-CPP dispersion into PMMA matrix, ball-milling was performed for 1 or 6 h. Three-point bending test was performed to study flexural strength, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) to reveal the elastic and viscous moduli along with Tg, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD) to investigate the structure of the materials and SEM for the morphological evaluation of both composite powders and polymerized specimens. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) experiments were performed to study their thermal properties. A statistically significant increase in flexural strength was found in the 0.5, 0.75 and 1% composite groups after 6 h ball-milling, relative to the control, with the 6 h ball milling mixed specimens, presenting the highest flexural strength values. The brittle fracture type was common to all groups. An obvious improvement of the mechanical properties and a slight improvement in the thermal stability of the composite materials values were also observed as β-CPP content was increased, while Tg values were statistically not-affected.

Abstract:Objectives This study aimed to compare the physical and mechanical properties of four denture base materials: Polyan IC (PA), milled polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin (3DP), and SR Ivocap (SR). Methods Ninety-six samples were prepared and divided into four groups as follows. Group A consisted of 3DP (Asiga DentaBASE, Asiga) fabricated using a manufacturer-recommended 3D printer (Asiga Pro 4k, Asiga). Group B comprised milled PMMA (MP) (Ivotion Base, Ivoclar Vivadent). Group C included PA (BredentSenden), meanwhile, group D involved SR (Ivoclar VivadentSchaan). Cuboid samples (65 mm x 10 mm x 2.5 mm) were used for biaxial flexure strength testing in a universal testing machine (UTM). Cylindrical samples of 20 mm x 40 mm were used for compressive strength testing in a UTM. Additionally, cuboid samples (65 mm x 10 mm x 2.5 mm) were used for Vickers surface hardness testing in a microhardness tester. Disc samples (10 mm x 2.5 mm) were employed for color stability testing both in a coffee solution and Coca-Cola, using a digital spectrophotometer. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc analysis (α=.05). Results MP demonstrated superior compressive strength (p=0.002) and color stability compared to that exhibited by 3DP (p<0.001) while displaying similar flexure strength (p=0.336) and hardness (p=0.708). MP and PA displayed similar compressive strength (p=0.081), flexure strength (p=0.159), and color stability in coke (p=0.071). However, MP had reduced hardness (p<0.001) and color stability in coffee (p<0.001). Moreover, MP demonstrated a higher compressive strength (p 0.05). Furthermore, 3DP exhibited comparable compressive strength (p=0.334) to that of PA but demonstrated significantly lower flexure strength (p=0.005), hardness (p<0.001), and color stability (p<0.001) compared to PA. In comparison to SR, PA had a higher compressive strength (p <0.001), hardness (p=0.001), and color stability in coffee (p 0.05) flexure strength and color stability in coke. Conclusions The MP and PA demonstrated superior compressive strength than that exhibited by the other materials tested. The tested materials had similar flexure strengths, except for PA which demonstrated superiority over the 3DP. Among all tested materials, PA exhibited the highest hardness, while the 3DP was the least color-stable. Clinical Significance Considering the mechanical properties and color stability, Polyan and milled polymethylmethacrylate are preferred for complete denture fabrication. However, the limited repairability and complex handling of Polyan should be considered.

Abstract:Aim: (1) To compare the temperature rise in the pulp chamber with different resin materials used for making provisional fixed partial dentures in anterior and posterior region while using Polyvinylsiloxane impression materials as matrix. (2) To identify a superior provisionalization material based on the amount of heat dissipated suitable for anterior and posterior provisional fixed partial denture fabrication. Settings and design: Temporary crowns and bridges are integral to Fixed Prosthodontics. It has been observed that conventional fixed prosthesis temporisation materials release heat due to the exothermic polymerisation reaction. When such a provisional material is directly let to set on a vital tooth, the heat transfer causes irreversible changes in the pulp tissue depending of the degree of change. Hence, this study observes amount of heat generation in various materials during temporisation procedure, by simulating similar conditions. Materials and methods: Two Models were fabricated, one simulating missing lateral incisor (Model A) and another simulating missing first molar (Model B). Intact maxillary central incisors and canine for Model A and intact mandibular Second Premolar and Second Molar were selected to act as abutments. These abutment teeth were fitted with the tip of a K-type Thermocouple inside their pulp chambers and these were connected to a digital thermometer. Five temporisation materials were chosen for fabrication of temporary crowns through Direct technique. (1) polymethy methacrylate (Self Cure acrylic), (2) bisacryl composite (Protemp 4), (3) visible light cure urethane dimethacrylate (Revotec LC), (4) barium glass and fumed silica infused methacrylate (Dentsply Integrity) and (5)nano-hybrid composite (VOCO Structur 3). Ten observations were made for each provisional material on each model. During each observation, temperature rise was recorded at 30s interval from the time of application, through the peak and till a decrease in temperature is observed. Polyvinyl siloxane was used as matrix for all except light cure resin, where polypropylene sheet was used. Statistical analysis used: Anova test used for statistical. Results: ANOVA test revealed that there was a significant difference in the temperature changes associated with the provisional restorative materials used. Among the five, polymethy methacrylate (self cure resin) showed the maximum rise in temperature, followed by bisacryl composite (Protemp 4), visible light cure urethane dimethacrylate (Revotec LC), barium glass and fumed silica infused methacrylate (Dentsply Integrity) and nano-hybrid composite (VOCO Structur 3). There was no comparable difference between Model A and B but an overall reduction of temperature rise was observed in model B. Conclusion: VOCO Structur 3 showed the least temperature rise in the pulp chamber, and overall temperature rise was less for model B which can be attributed to the residual dentin thickness.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer that is expansively employed in denture base construction due to its low cost, aesthetics, lightweight, reparability, and processability. Nevertheless, this material is not ideal to fulfill the mechanical and physical characteristics of dental restorations. Despite the popularity of the thermal polymerization method, the main shortcoming is the prolonged curing period. Thus, correctly selecting a polymerization cycle and post-polymerization treatment is needed to achieve promising outcomes. In autoclave polymerization, pressure plays a crucial function in accelerating the initial polymerization as well as decreasing the pores and remaining monomer level, thereby improving the flexural strength. Besides, ultrasound can speed up conventional chemical reactions by generating intensive local heating, higher pressures, and very short periods. This article reviews the currently employed protocols for enhancing PMMA denture base polymers and discusses the properties of modified acrylic materials. Moreover, this work explores the effects of the post-polymerization treatment, autoclave process, ultrasonic treatment, and gamma irradiation on the PMMA performance, as well as the positive influence of these treatments on functional properties and clinical longevity.
Marginal Fit, Mechanical Properties, and Esthetic Outcomes of CAD/CAM Interim Fixed Dental Prostheses (FDPs): A Systematic Review

Abstract:This systematic review aimed to study the outcomes of CAD-CAM (milled and 3D-printed) interim dental prostheses when compared to conventional ones. The focused question of "In natural teeth, what are the outcomes of CAD-CAM interim FDPs compared to the conventionally-manufactured ones regarding marginal fit, mechanical properties, esthetics, and color stability" was formulated. The systematic search was conducted electronically in the PubMed/MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Web of Science, New York Academy of Medicine Grey Literature Report, and Google Scholar databases by using the MeSH keywords and keywords associated with the focused question and limiting articles to those published between 2000 and 2022. A manual search was conducted in selected dental journals. The results were analyzed qualitatively and are presented in table format. Of the included studies, 18 studies were in vitro and 1 was a randomized clinical trial. Of the eight studies analyzing the mechanical properties, five studies favored the milled interim restorations, one study favored both 3D-printed and milled interim restorations, and two studies reported better mechanical properties in conventional interim restorations. Among four studies evaluating the marginal discrepancies, two studies favored the marginal fit in milled interim restorations, one study reported a better marginal fit in both milled and 3D-printed interim restorations, and one study found conventional interim restorations have a better marginal fit and smaller marginal discrepancy when compared to both milled and 3D-printed restorations. Among five studies that evaluated both the mechanical properties and marginal fit, 1 study favored 3D-printed interim restorations and four studies favored milled interim restorations over the conventional ones. Two studies analyzing the esthetics outcomes demonstrated better results with milled interim restorations compared to conventional and 3D-printed interim restorations in terms of their color stabilities. The risk of bias was low for all the studies reviewed. The high level of heterogeneity within the studies excluded meta-analysis. Most of the studies favored the milled interim restorations over the 3D-printed and conventional restorations. The results suggested that milled interim restorations offer a better marginal fit, higher mechanical properties, and better esthetic outcomes in terms of color stabilities.

Abstract:Statement of problem Computer aided technologies have been used to fabricate occlusal devices. However, the clinical behavior of the newly developed materials developed for occlusal devices is unknown. Purpose The purpose of this prospective, double-blind study was to assess the clinical efficacy of recently introduced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials for the fabrication of occlusal devices. Material and methods A total of 24 participants were divided randomly into 2 study groups; polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and a control group (CG). Conventional impressions and gypsum casts were obtained from all participants. In the study groups, the casts were digitalized with an extraoral digital scanner, designed with a software program (Bite Occlusal Device Module; exocad GmbH) and milled from PEEK and PMMA blocks. Clear resin sheets were used for occlusal device fabrication in the CG. The baseline measurements were made during the initial appointments. After 6 months, the participants returned for follow-up evaluations. Clinical performance based on surface roughness, wear of the antagonist teeth, occlusal device fit and therapeutic effect, as well as participant satisfaction were compared using the 1-way ANOVA test between the main groups (α=.05). The post hoc and Kruskal Wallis-H tests were used to compare the nonparametric group. Results The therapeutic effects of the occlusal devices did not differ. All participants showed improvement in palpation and mandibular movement scores, but no statistically significant differences were found among the groups ( P >.05). PEEK and PMMA had statistically less surface wear than CG ( P <.001) and led to less antagonist tooth wear. No significant participant satisfaction difference was seen among the groups ( P >.05). The control group had the best fit ( P <.001). Conclusions Recent CAD-CAM materials exhibit clinically acceptable outcomes, and their performance is comparable with that of traditional materials. CAD-CAM materials appear suitable in terms of accuracy, surface wear, and therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract:Introduction: Interim restorations are essential in restorative dentistry, serving as temporary solutions until permanent restorations can be placed. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a promising solution for customizing teeth for removable dentures to match the exact requirements of patients. The color stability of these restorations is critical for patient satisfaction. PMMA is a widely used material for interim restorations due to its favorable properties. The study compares the color stability of PMMA interim restorations polished using traditional pumice versus Algishine, a novel polishing agent derived from pulverized old alginate impressions. Materials and methods: The 3-D design software Geomagic Design X (3D Systems, Rock Hill, CA) created a standard tessellation language file of 2-cm radius circles. Sixty PMMA samples were milled and divided into two groups of 30 each. Group A samples were polished using pumice, while group B samples were polished with Algishine. Baseline color measurements were taken using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany). The samples were then subjected to staining with coffee, tea, and red wine solutions for 30 days, simulating oral conditions. Post-staining color measurements were taken, and color changes (ΔE) were calculated at the seven-day (t1) and one-month (t2) mark. The Shapiro-Wilk test assessed normality, followed by a two-way ANOVA test to compare color change values at different time points. Results: At t1 (seven days), there were no significant differences between groups A and B in the coffee and tea staining groups. However, significant differences were observed in red wine staining, with group B exhibiting lower ΔE values (0.14 ± 0.067) compared to group A (0.38 ± 0.076) (p < 0.01). At t2 (30 days), significant differences were noted in all staining groups. Group B consistently showed lower ΔE values: coffee (0.125 ± 0.084 vs. 0.236 ± 0.015, p < 0.01), tea (0.254 ± 0.087 vs. 0.391 ± 0.015, p < 0.01), and red wine (1.174 ± 0.045 vs. 1.309 ± 0.074, p < 0.01), indicating superior resistance to staining compared to group A. Discussion: The results suggest that Algishine is more effective than pumice in maintaining the color stability of PMMA interim restorations. The novel polishing agent derived from old alginate impressions enhances esthetic longevity and provides an eco-friendly solution for recycling dental material waste. Conclusion: Algishine performs superiorly in preserving the color of PMMA interim restorations against common staining agents. Its application can potentially improve patient satisfaction and contribute to sustainable dental practices.
Comparative Evaluation of Polymethyl Methacrylate and Thermoforming Crowns as Semipermanent Crowns in Primary Molars: An In Vivo Study

Abstract:Aim: The present randomized clinical trial is aimed at evaluating clinical efficiency of two different types of esthetic crowns-polymethyl methacrylate crowns and vacuum formed thermoformed crown as an alternative to full-coverage coronal restoration for deciduous molars. Materials and methods: A total of 45 primary molars in pediatric patients were selected using randomization and split into three groups based on the technique used for preparation of crowns: group I-polymethyl methacrylate crowns; group II-thermoformed crown; and group III-stainless steel crowns (SSC). All crowns were clinically and radiographically evaluated at baseline, 1st month, and 3rd month for gingival health, retention, marginal integrity, proximal contacts, occlusion, alignment, and staining. Statistical analysis: The data was tabulated and analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23.0 software. The intergroup comparison was done by Kruskal-Wallis test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Mann-Whitney U test for continuous data. The intragroup comparison was done by Friedman test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test for categorical data. All p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: With regard to the parameters of plaque score, gingival index score, occlusion, interproximal contacts, retention, alignment, and marginal adaptation, no statistical significance was noted between the three groups. However, with regard to the discoloration (staining) when the polymethyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA) group was compared with thermoforming group, statistical significance was noted in 1st month with p-values of 0.04 and 0.03, respectively. On intragroup comparison, statistically significant values were obtained in SSC group for plaque score and thermoforming group for gingival index score. Clinical significance: The study concluded that the PMMA and thermoforming crowns can be used as an alternative to SSC for restoring the primary molars as they showed equivalent results to that of standard SSC. Abstract:A wide range of polymers are commonly used for various applications in prosthodontics. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used for prosthetic dental applications, including the fabrication of artificial teeth, denture bases, dentures, obturators, orthodontic retainers, temporary or provisional crowns, and for the repair of dental prostheses. Additional dental applications of PMMA include occlusal splints, printed or milled casts, dies for treatment planning, and the embedding of tooth specimens for research purposes. The unique properties of PMMA, such as its low density, aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, ease of manipulation, and tailorable physical and mechanical properties, make it a suitable and popular biomaterial for these dental applications. To further improve the properties (thermal properties, water sorption, solubility, impact strength, flexural strength) of PMMA, several chemical modifications and mechanical reinforcement techniques using various types of fibers, nanoparticles, and nanotubes have been reported recently. The present article comprehensively reviews various aspects and properties of PMMA biomaterials, mainly for prosthodontic applications. In addition, recent updates and modifications to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA are also discussed.

Abstract:Newly introduced provisional crowns and fixed dental prostheses (FDP) materials should exhibit good physical and mechanical properties necessary to serve the purpose of their fabrication. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the articles comparing the physical and mechanical properties of 3D-printed provisional crown and FDP resin materials with CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Designing/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) milled and conventional provisional resins. Indexed English literature up to April 2022 was systematically searched for articles using the following electronic databases: MEDLINE-PubMed, Web of Science (core collection), Scopus, and the Cochrane library. This systematic review was structured based on the guidelines given by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The focused PICO/PECO (Participant, Intervention/exposure, Comparison, Outcome) question was: 'Do 3D-printed (P) provisional crowns and FDPs (I) have similar physical and mechanical properties (O) when compared to CAD/CAM milled and other conventionally fabricated ones (C)'. Out of eight hundred and ninety-six titles, which were recognized after a primary search, twenty-five articles were included in the qualitative analysis, and their quality analysis was performed using the modified CONSORT scale. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, only twelve articles were included for quantitative analysis. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that 3D-printed provisional crown and FDP resin materials have superior mechanical properties but inferior physical properties compared to CAD/CAM milled and other conventionally fabricated ones. Three-dimensionally printed provisional crowns and FDP materials can be used as an alternative to conventional and CAD/CAM milled long-term provisional materials.

Abstract:The use of additive technologies in dentistry is a promising trend; however, the physical and mechanical properties of the materials intended for the fabrication of long-term fixed restorations remain understudied. The aim of this research is to determine the feasibility of the use of long-term fixed provisional restorations made of polymer materials, fabricated using 3D printing. The conformance of the physical and mechanical properties of NextDent C&B Micro Filled Hybrid (ND) and Detax Freeprint temp UV (DX) materials to ISO 1567:1999 standard, stability of their physical and mechanical properties under the conditions of accelerated aging, as well as their resistance to the oral cavity environment were studied. As a result of the performed studies, the DX material turned out to be superior to ND with respect to most characteristics. Clinical observations were conducted on the treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis using the following fixed provisional splints made of various materials: DX, fabricated according to the Slide-And-Separate technology, splints fabricated using the CAD/CAM technology, and adhesive splints reinforced with a GlasSpan fiberglass thread. As a result of the analysis of the OHI-S and PI indices values, the absence of any statistically significant difference between the above-describe treatment methods was determined. The studied materials conform to the requirements of ISO 1567:1999; the materials exhibited different stability under the conditions of accelerated aging, nevertheless, they can be utilized for the fabrication of long-term fixed provisional restorations.

Abstract:Modern media often portray CAD/CAM technology as widely utilized in the fabrication of dental prosthetics. This study presents a comparative analysis of the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) polymers and conventional polymers commonly utilized in prosthetic dentistry. With the increasing adoption of CAD/CAM technology in dental laboratories and practices, understanding the differences in material properties is crucial for informed decision-making in prosthodontic treatment planning. Through a narrative review of the literature and empirical data, this study evaluates the mechanical strength, durability, esthetics, and biocompatibility of CAD/CAM polymers in comparison to traditional polymers. Furthermore, it examines the implications of these findings on the clinical outcomes and long-term success of prosthetic restorations. The results provide valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of CAD/CAM polymers, informing clinicians and researchers about their suitability for various dental prosthetic applications. This study underscores the considerable advantages of CAD/CAM polymers over conventional ones in terms of mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and esthetics for prosthetic dentistry. CAD/CAM technology offers improved mechanical strength and durability, potentially enhancing the long-term performance of dental prosthetics, while the biocompatibility of these polymers makes them suitable for a broad patient demographic, reducing the risk of adverse reactions. The practical implications of these findings for dental technicians and dentists are significant, as understanding these material differences enables tailored treatment planning to meet individual patient needs and preferences. Integration of CAD/CAM technology into dental practices can lead to more predictable outcomes and heightened patient satisfaction with prosthetic restorations.
