Abstract:Lake Victoria is a shared water resource between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, which is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It has long since suffered from the consequences of overexploitation of its resources, mainly fish stocks, and increasingly high pollution. The closure of 58% of the fish processing plants (FPPs) is attributed to the declining fish stocks due to overfishing and pollution in particular. The installation and operation of a pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Kisumu, Kenya, adopts an integrated approach by providing an integral, sustainable, cost effective and robust solution for water sanitation which also meets the demand for clean water in fish processing industry, aquaculture and irrigation. The innovative system comprises a pilot MBR coupled with a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). The RAS is able to recirculate 90‐95% of its water volume; only the water loss through evaporation and drum filter back flushing has to be replaced. To compensate for this water deficit the MBR treats domestic wastewater for further reuse. Additionally, excess, purified water is used for irrigating a variety of local vegetables and could also be used in fish processing plants. The pilot‐scale MBR plant with around 6 m2 submerged commercial polyethersulfone (PES) membranes provides treated water in basic agreement with FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) standards for irrigation and aquaculture, showing no adverse effects on tilapia fingerlings production. A novel membrane module with a low‐fouling coating is operating stably, but has not yet shown improved performance compared to the commercial one.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Nowadays, there are more than fourteen major state and private owned textile industries and garment factories in Ethiopia. However, these textile effluents are directly discharged without treatment to the surrounding environment, as a result, the pollutants bring serious problem to the surrounding community including health such as skin diseases, asthma, abortion, carcinogenic effect, biodiversity loss and mutagenic effect on the. The main objective of this study is characterization and treatment of the textile effluent using aluminum electrodes in the electrocoagulation process. EC experimental setups were designed and different parameters were optimized. Electrocoagulation treatment process eliminates physicochemical quality indicators such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC); turbidity, biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia; nitrate, nitrite, total nitrogen (TN) and phosphate were determined using standard procedures. From the result, the maximum removal efficiency of phosphate, ammonia, TN, electrical conductivity, turbidity and BOD were obtained 97, 87, 88, 89, 99 and 66%, respectively. Analyses of the electrochemically generated sludge by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the expected crystalline aluminum oxides (bayerite (Al(OH) 3 diaspore (AlO(OH)) were found in the sludge. The amorphous phase was also found in the floc. Therefore, a treatment technology was good and encourages the community to apply the technique for the treatment of textile effluent before discharging into the environment.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands are engineered systems built to use natural processes and remove pollutants from contaminated water in a more controlled environment. The research was an experimental research carried out to assess the effectiveness of natural and constructed wetland systems in the treatment of coffee wastewater. The 2 vertical flow constructed wetland was built. The first wetland covered an area of 132 m 2 . It has 12 m width and 11 m length. Open space is constructed between 2 constructed wetlands with a dimension of 11 m × 3 m × 1 m. The second wetland was constructed and its function is similar to the first one, from this wetland water is discharged to the river. The construction of the wetland is accomplished by constructing 20 cm wide furrows with a spacing of 30 cm. Vetiver grasses have planted with a spacing of 20 cm intervals. The physicochemical data were recorded, organized, and analyzed using R software (version 4.1) and Microsoft Excel. Data were processed using parametric (one-way ANOVA) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitney’s U test) statistical tests of homogeneity. One-way analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significance of differences in variations in physicochemical variables within the constructed wetland sites. Tukey’s multiple comparisons for differences between means were also assessed. Findings indicated that a natural wetland had a mean influent and effluent of total suspended solids (TSS) of 2190.78 ± 448.46 mg/l and 972.67 ± 234.312 mg/l, respectively. A Mann-Whitney U test revealed that TSS were significantly higher in natural wetland (median = 1551.50) compared to constructed wetland (median = 922.5), U = 676.5, z = −2.435, P = .015, r = .257. Natural wetlands had a mean influent of biological oxygen demand (BOD) was 4277.94 ± 157.02 mg/l, while in the effluent of BOD it was 326.83 ± 112.24 mg/l. While in constructed wetland it was 4192.4 ± 191.3 mg/l, 782.72 ± 507.6 mg/l, and 88.28 ± 20.08 mg/l in influent, middle, and effluent respectively. Average chemical oxygen demand (COD) value at influent in natural wetlands was 8085.61 ± 536.99 mg/l and in the effluent it was 675.33 ± 201.4 mg/l. In constructed wetland, it was found to be 8409.8 ± 592.9, 1372.6 ± 387.94, and 249.0 ± 7.68 for influent, middle, and effluent respectively. Comparatively, the purification efficiency of organic pollutants (TSS, BOD, and COD) of constructed wetlands was better than natural wetlands, whereas natural wetlands had better purification efficiency of nitrogen compounds such as ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate. On average, removal rates for nitrogen compounds were 39.53% and −24.41% for ammonium, 79.44% and 55.4% for nitrite, and 68.90% and 60.6% for nitrate in natural and constructed wetlands respectively, while the phosphate removal rate was 43.17% and 58.7% in natural and constructed wetlands, respectively. A Mann-Whitney U test revealed that there is no significance difference in nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate concentration between natural and constructed wetlands( P > .05). Based on these results, both systems of treatment were effective in treating the coffee effluent since most of the values obtained were below the permissible EEPA limits. Even though the constructed wetland treatment plant performed better overall, in comparison, the natural wetlands had better purification efficiency for nitrogen compounds like ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate and the constructed wetlands had better purification efficiency for organic pollutants (TSS, BOD, and COD).

Abstract:The disposal of untreated or partially treated brewery wastewater can cause pollution problems to the receiving water bodies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-stage horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSFCW) system planted with Cyperus alternifolius and Typha latifolia in polishing an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating brewery effluent in Kombolcha, Northern Ethiopia. The system was integrated with the UASB reactor, and its performance efficiency was monitored for a year using standard methods. The first-order kinetic model was used to correlate the influent and effluent pollutant concentrations and estimate the areal rate constant (kA) by fitting the experimental data to the model. The HSSFCW's water quality index (WQI) and oxygen transfer rate (OTR) were also calculated. The findings showed that HSSFCW removed 89% total suspended solids (TSS), 92% chemical oxygen demand (COD), 83.6% total nitrogen (TN), 92.9% ammonium – nitrogen (NH4+ − N), 74.4% total phosphorous (TP), and 79.5% orthophosphate (PO43−). Literature comparable OTR values were obtained for each HSSFCW stage with a total OTR value of 23.5 g−2d−1. Effluent concentrations of COD, TN and NH4+ − N were reasonably correlated (R2 ≥ 0.85) to influent concentrations. The calculated kA (md-1) for TSS, COD, TN, NH4+ − N, TP, and PO43− were 0.26, 0.26, 0.11, 0.18, 0.08, and 0.08, respectively. Further polishing of the effluent with two-stage HSSFCW has shifted the WQI from a good to excellent water quality rating and thus, can be used as a sustainable polishing technique for agro-process wastewaters.

Abstract:The use of untreated or partially treated wastewater reuse for urban and peri-urban agricultural irrigation is a common practice in developing countries like Ethiopia. Such practices, however, pose significant environmental and public health risks. The objective of this study was to evaluate the irrigation suitability of anaerobic digestion brewery effluent (ADBE) and two-stage horizontal subsurface constructed wetland post-treated ADBE (CWPBE). A series of pot experiments were conducted in a plastic - greenhouse system arranged in three sets of irrigation schemes: Treatment Group1 (TG1): municipal pipe tap water (MPTW) irrigated pots; Treatment Group2 (TG2): ADBE irrigated pots, and Treatment Group3 (TG3): CWPBE irrigated pots. Pots packed with the same amount of sandy clay loam soil and local tomato seeds sown were irrigated following an updated tomato irrigation schedule derived from the FAO CROPWAT stimulation model for 120 days. The findings from key irrigation water quality parameters showed that the CWPBE achieved the prescribed irrigation water standards with values of pH (7.4 ± 0.15), electrical conductivity (1.9 ± 0.11 dS.m-1), total suspended solids (25 ± 4.17 mgL-1), chemical oxygen demand (185.1 ± 1.66 mgL-1), total nitrogen (17.4 ± 0.7 mgL-1), total phosphorous (8.8 ± 0.26 mgkg-1), calcium (10.5 ± 3.6 mgkg-1), magnesium (4.9 ± 0.98 mgkg-1), sodium (4.4 ± 1.51 mgkg-1), potassium (2.3 ± 1.15 mgkg-1), sodium adsorption ratio (1.6 ± 0.34), and total coliform (8 ± 0.16×10-5 CFU/100 mL). Moreover, tomato plants grown in TG3 attained higher growth such as number of leaves (85.6 ± 4.68), plant height (92.2 ± 1.29 cm), stem diameter (13.1 ± 2.35 cm) and leaf area (35.5 ± 1.03 cm2) as well as higher biomass (61.2 ± 1.33 kgm-2) and fruit (46.4 ± 3.51 kgm-2) yields over other treatment groups. The results revealed that irrigation waters significantly improved both growth and yield parameters of tomato plants with the ascending order of TG1 < TG2 < TG3. Moreover, CWPBE showed minima short-term residual effect on soil physicochemical properties as compared to ADBE, and thus, it has potential suitability for agricultural irrigation reuse.

Abstract:Discharging industrial waste into water bodies without any treatment is the main source of water pollution. The purpose of this study is to analyze the amount of physicochemical of industry effluents or wastes emitted in streams and rivers in towns of Oromia Special Zones Surrounding Finfinne. Sampling and preserving wastewater was based on American Public Health Association (APHA, Standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater, American Public Health Association, Washington, D.C, 1999). A composite sampling method was employed to collect industry wastewater sample and there by determine the concentration of pH, electric conductivity, chemical oxygen demand Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and water temperature using ultraviolent atomic spectrophotometer, pH meter, and conductivity meter. The results revealed values of all sampling points were significantly different. The sampling points of Sululta of site 2 and site 5, Gelan of site2 and site 5 and Burayu of site4 were not within the pH ranges of United states Environment Protection Agency (United States environmental protection agency, USEPA (2009). National primary drinking water regulation) depicting the water not safe drinking and irrigation purposes. The low mean pH value at Sabata sampling site of3. The results of nutrient showed all study sites and sampling points seriously polluted by Total nitrogen and Total Phosphorus. Therefore, the industrial effluents were affected water quality, human, aquatic health, environmental pollution and thereby need mitigation measures of sustainable monitoring and supervision of untreated release of industry waste into the environment, phytoremediation of affected streams and rivers, awareness creation for community and advising firm owners to install industry waste treatment plants.

Abstract:Wastewater from the slaughterhouse industry is characterized by high levels of organic matter and nutrients. Due to this, it cannot be handled by a single or standalone treatment technique such as anaerobic digestion, as it does not provide effluent pollutant (organic matter and nutrients) concentrations that meet the desired discharge limits. The objective of this study was to develop an integrated biological wastewater treatment system that would take slaughterhouse wastewater, produce biogas in an anaerobic digestion unit by removing major organic matter, and remove most of the nutrients and residual organic matter in a microalgae photobioreactor. The integrated bench-scale treatment system indicated perceptible performance, with overall removal efficiencies of 99% of TCOD, SCOD, and BOD, 93–99% of TDS, 99% of TN, 98–99% of NH 4 + -N and PO 4 −3 , 90–95% of NO 3 − and TP, and 97–98% of SO 4 −2 . In addition, 189.5 mL/day of biogas and 128.4 mL/day of methane, with an average composition of 67.69%. Furthermore, from the Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-cultures' crude lipid, the biodiesel content of 72–79%, 67–78%, and 71–81%, respectively were obtained. The final effluent of the photobioreactor meets the minimum acceptable national environmental quality standards of Ethiopia. In general, from the lipid composition analysis of microalgae biomass in this study, all three ( Chlorella sp ., Scenedesmus sp ., and co-cultures) strains cultivated in two-phase AD effluent can be noted as suitable feedstock for biodiesel.

Abstract:There was pollution of effluents from some of the industries inside Eastern industrial park. Consequently, the paper intended to assess the liquid waste management practices and the role of communal treatment plant. The researcher used mixed approach. Accordingly, the existing liquid waste management practices were not sufficient. The perception of employees of industries also revealed, there was no effective liquid waste communal treatment plant and the existing equipments and facilities was not sufficient. Based on multinomial logistic regression model, formulation and enforcement of legislation and training and motivation of personnel were the factors that determine the existence of effective liquid waste management practices. While financing and investment in equipment and facilities, training and motivation of personnel and public education and involvement are the factors that determine the existence of sufficient facilities and equipment for liquid waste management practices. Each company was recommended to have efficient primary treatment plant and sufficient facilities.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the wastewater treatment process and assess the industrial wastewater quality before and after being treated by effluent treatment plants (ETPs) of steel-galvanizing industries located in Mirsharai, Sitakunda, Karnaphuli, and Kalurghat industrial areas of Chattogram, Bangladesh. Wastewater samples were collected from six steel-galvanizing industries during the dry season and monsoon season. The water quality was evaluated based on five physiсochemical parameters, namely pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), as well as the concentration of heavy metals including Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Cd. The measured data were compared with the national and international standards established for ensuring water safety. It was observed that steel plants generate complex wastewater rich in highly dissolved solids and heavy metal ions. Although pH, BOD 5 , and COD values were within acceptable ranges in these industries, high TDS values were observed. The Fe concentration of discharged stream areas ranged from 0.992 to 16.89 mg/L, exceeding the guideline limits. Additionally, the Cr concentration in both the inlet and outlet exhibited high concentrations, surpassing the standard limits, particularly those set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Thus, steel-galvanizing industries are likely contributing to water pollution through the discharge of wastewater, particularly in terms of Fe and Cr. The efficiency of ETPs varied for different metals. Furthermore, this study highlighted the importance of the effective design of ETPs to mitigate potential pollution and promote sustainable practices.

Abstract:Aims: To characterise wastewater, assess effluent quality and treatment efficiency of 3 existing biogas plants in 3 distinct institutions in Ghana and to provide relevant data necessary to policy makers to inform decision and influence policy. Study Design: Laboratory analyses were conducted on wastewater samples from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Mfantsipim Senior High School (Mfantsipim) and Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons (Ankaful), between January and April 2018. Methodology: In all, 192 wastewater samples were collected from UCC, Mfantsipim and Ankaful for analyses. Physical, chemical and biological parameters were analysed on raw wastewater and on the effluent. Quality parameters were determined using the protocol outlined in the Standard Methods. Results: The results showed significant differences between effluent quality from UCC, Mfantsipim and Ankaful with most of the quality parameters falling within the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. However, electrical conductivity (EC), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), total coliforms (T. coli), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella spp. (salmonella) exceeded the guideline values. The ratio between BOD5/COD was 0.5 and 0.3 for UCC and Ankaful respectively, indicating high biodegradability while Mfantsipim recorded 0.06, indicating low biodegradability. The parameters which had high treatment efficiency for the biogas plants was UCC (TSS 72.22%, total volatile solids (TVS) 78.41%, BOD5 64.22%, COD 63.56%, PO4 61.29%, T. coli 1.9 log reduction, E. coli less than 1 log reduction, salmonella 1.5 log reduction and vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) 1 log reduction) followed by Mfantsipim (BOD5 70.45%, COD 83.84%, NO3 79.17%, T. coli 1.6 log reduction, E. coli 5 log reduction, salmonella 1.8 log reduction and V. cholerae complete removal), while Ankaful was (TDS 57.7%, TSS 68.17%, TVS 56.33%, BOD5 82.4%, COD 81.13%, T. coli less than 1 log reduction, E. coli less than 1 log reduction, salmonella less than 1 log reduction and V. cholerae 0.96 log reduction). The rest of the parameters exhibited negative and/or low values. The performance analysis of the three biogas plants showed that UCC performs a little better than Ankaful and far better than Mfantsipim in term of treatment efficiency. Conclusion: The performance analysis indicated that the biogas plants were under-performing which could be attributed to poor maintenance, design deficiencies, poor environmental conditions and voluminous in-put loads. These factors impact the treatment efficiency resulting in relatively poor effluent quality which could put the health of the public at great risk. It is therefore recommended that authorities and policy makers formulate appropriate regulations aimed at addressing the potential impact of poor effluent quality discharged into the environment.

Abstract:Abstract Groundwater is the major resource for drinking and irrigation purposes in urban areas of Abaya-Chemo sub-basin of Great Rift Valley, Ethiopia. There is an incredible increase in demand in the sub-basin for good-quality groundwater resources. However, the exhaustive irrigation and rapid urbanization has posed a serious threat to groundwater quality in the urban districts of sub-basin like Arba Minch town. The aim of the study was to evaluate the groundwater quality status and to map their spatial distribution with respect to the suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes in Arba Minch town, Ethiopia. Fourteen bore well samples were examined for geochemical variations and groundwater qualities. The spatial distribution maps of quality parameters were prepared using the kriging method in ArcGIS 10.3. Drinking water quality index, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), percentage sodium (Na%), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), and permeability index (PI) were considered for drinking and irrigation suitability assessment. Comparison of the hydrochemical results with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ethiopian drinking water standards (ES) and various classifications revealed that the current status of the groundwaters is suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes except for a few sites at the northwestern part of the study area. The WQI results revealed that 7% and 64% of samples fall from excellent to good classes for drinking categories. Irrigation indices also demonstrated that 80% of samples fall in good classes for irrigation purposes. About 75 percent of samples belong to Ca–Mg-HCO 3 facies, and the reaming samples belong to Ca–Mg–Cl facies. The results of the study concluded that the proposed approach is reliable and efficient for the groundwater pollution status evaluation and can also be applied in decision making for effective groundwater resources monitoring in the study area.

Abstract:The determination of the vitamins A and E as well as of carotenes and lycopene is important for studies of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. A method for laboratory routine is reported to separate simultaneously retinol, tocopherols, alpha- and beta-carotene, lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin in human plasma or serum by HPLC on reversed phase starting from one extract. Two detectors with programmable wavelength are used sequentially, a spectrophotometer for the detection of the carotenoids in the visible region and a fluorometer for the assay of retinol and the tocopherols.

Abstract:The discharge of industrial waste into water bodies without significant treatment can be a source of water pollution. This study was conducted to assess the impact of industrial wastewater on the water quality in rivers around the Bole Lemi Industrial Park (BLIP). Data were collected from six sampling stations in midstream, downstream, and upstream locations between May and June 2021. In situ (pH, electrical conductivity [EC], total suspended solids [TSS], and temperature) and ex situ (chemical oxygen demand [COD], total nitrogen [TN], total dissolved solids [TDS], total phosphorus [TP], and biological oxygen demand [BOD]) determinations of water quality were conducted. The quality of the water samples was examined using the weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) method. A statistical analysis showed that there are significant differences in the water quality parameters among the sampling stations along the river. The results showed different levels of temperature, EC, pH, TSS, TDS, COD, BOD, TN, and TP. The pH values were higher than the pH ranges (6.5–8.5) of USEPA, EU, CES, and WHO at two sampling stations. The results of the WQI showed that the analyzed water samples were in the "unsuitable for consumption" water quality category. These results will be useful for the city administration of Addis Ababa in crafting strategies for the protection and sustainable management of the Bole Lemi River.

Abstract:Wastewater generated in dairies has a strong polluting potential and must be treated for disposal into water bodies or reuse. The objective of this work was to analyze the efficiency of removing pollutants through the processes used by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a dairy located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, the results of the characterization analyses referring to raw and treated wastewater were interpreted. The results showed that the sequence of processes used in the WWTP (water/oil separation, dissolved air flotation, followed by biodegradation in an upflow anaerobic filter) is efficient in removing on average 99.1% of COD and 98.7% of BOD 5 . For treated wastewater, data on pH and concentration of total suspended solids, total ammoniacal nitrogen, surfactants, settleable solids, and oils and greases also met the standards for disposal into water bodies. For reuse in agriculture, treated wastewater can be used for irrigation, but it is recommended to additionally evaluate the Escherichia coli parameter. When evaluating the existence of linear correlation between COD and BOD 5 data, it was possible to find only a moderate correlation ( R 2 equal to 0.7) for treated wastewater.

Abstract:Abstract Surface water pollution is a global problem and has been evident for a long period of time. Hence, the aim of the study was to evaluate the hydro-geochemical characteristics of Selamko farm reservoir water quality and its suitability for multipurpose uses using GIS-based water quality indices. The water sampling sites and parameters were selected systematically based on the land use, land cover, and anthropogenic activities around Selamko reservoir watershed in Debre Tabor, Ethiopia. Water samples were collected from 11 sampling stations from July 2019 to March 2020 using the composite sampling method and examined using standard procedures. The suitability of the reservoir's water quality for multipurpose use was investigated using drinking and irrigation water quality indices, and other tools. The spatial distribution maps of water quality parameters were prepared using the kriging method in ArcGIS 10.5. The results of the geospatial analysis indicated that the reservoir water quality parameters had spatial variation, which was caused by industrial and household wastewater inflow across the reservoir's watershed. Based on WHO and ES standards, the computed drinking water quality index results revealed that 81.81% and 18.18% of the reservoir's water quality fall into the poor to very poor classes, which indicates that the water in the reservoir is not fit for drinking. However, a Wilcox diagram, irrigation indices, and USEPA regulations revealed that the reservoir water quality is found to be safe and suitable for irrigation, fishing, and livestock purposes. The study concluded that Selamko reservoir's water quality is suitable for irrigation, fishing, and livestock watering with proper management accordingly.

Abstract:Abstract The anaerobic process is considered to be a sustainable technology for the treatment of wastewaters rich in organic matter mainly due to its lower energy consumption and production of value-added products such as biogas and organic fertilizer. However, it cannot be seen as providing ‘complete’ environmental solution as its treated effluents would typically not meet the desired discharge limits in terms of residual carbon, nutrients and other pollutants. This has given impetus to subsequent post treatment in order to meet the environmental standards and protect the receiving water bodies and environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-treatment potential of a pilot scale two-stage horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSFCW) system planted with Cyperus alternifolius and Typha latifolia , respectively, for enhanced removal of residual carbon and nutrient from an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treated brewery effluent. A pilot scale two-stage HSSFCW was integrated with the UASB reactor, and its performance efficiency was assessed for the removal of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium–nitrogen (NH 4 –N), total phosphorous (TP), and orthophosphate (PO 4 3− ). Macrophytes aboveground biomass and nutrient accumulation potential were also determined following standard methods. The results from this study showed that Cyperus alternifolius planted CW cell removed 68.5% TSS, 74.2% COD, 55.7% TN, 68.6% NH 4 –N, 41.1% TP and 48.1% PO 4 3− . Moreover, further polishing with Typha latifolia planted CW cell enhanced the removal efficiencies to 89% TSS, 92% COD, 83.6% TN, 92.9% NH 4 – N, 74.4% TP, and 79.5% PO 4 3− . Strong linearity and Pearson correlation was found between macrophyte biomass and nutrient accumulation in each CW cell ( Cyperus alternifolius : R 2 = 0.91, r = 0.97 for TN; R 2 = 0.92, r = 0.96 for TP; and Typha latifolia : R 2 = 0.96, r = 0.98 for TN and TP), and showed substantial nutrient reduction with cumulative nutrient accumulation of 1290 gTNm −2 and 708.7 gTPm −2 in the complete system. The performance of the pilot CW system as a tertiary treatment for brewery wastewater showed that the effluent meets the permissible discharge standards throughout the year excluding phosphorous.

Abstract:The potential of using German grass (Echinochloa polystachya) in FTWs (Floating Treatment Wetlands) to treat municipal wastewater was investigated in this study. This mesocosm-based study was conducted over a 7-day Hydraulic Retention Period (HRT) with a total of 28 experimental days following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments and three replicates. To evaluate system efficiency, mean temperature, PH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and electrical conductivity (EC) were also measured along with nitrate and phosphate concentrations. On day 28, the nitrate removal rate obtained with Pickerel weed was 88.65 % while German grass showed 86.56 % of remediation. On the other hand, while Pickerelweed removed 9.5 % of phosphate, German grass removed 7.47 %. The study demonstrated that the use of German grass in FTWs can be highly effective in the removal of nitrate ions from wastewater, while the removal of phosphate ions was minimal.
