Abstract:In this paper, the performance of environmentally friendly porous asphalt mixture was optimized by the response surface method. Taking the asphalt-aggregate ratio, crumb-rubber content, and basalt fiber content as the independent variables, the air void, Marshall stability, flow value, Marshall quotient, and Cantabro particle loss are the response values. The best model was determined by fitting the experimental data. After the influence of the independent variables on the response values was clarified, the models were used to optimize the dosage of the asphalt, crumb rubber, and basalt fiber through comprehensive analysis. The results showed that the application of the response surface method can complete the establishment of the models and the optimization of the performance of the porous asphalt mixture with sufficient accuracy. The optimum dosage of the asphalt to aggregate ratio, crumb rubber, and basalt fiber is 4.51%, 11.21%, and 0.42%, respectively. The high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability, and Cantabro particle loss resistance of the optimized porous asphalt mixture were effectively improved, which provides a reference for the construction of eco-friendly pavement.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:In order to study the applicability of basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture in middle surface layer of semi-rigid asphalt pavement structure,firstly, pavement design software is used to calculate the thickness of pavement structure of normal asphalt mixture, high modulus asphalt mixture,SBS modified asphalt mixture,basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture.Then,using software ABAQUS to analyze the stress of the pavement structure of the above 4 kinds of asphalt mixture, the middle surface layer thickness,the tensile stress and the vertical displacement of the different asphalt mixtures are obtained. The results showed that the basalt fiber high modulus asphalt mixture used in surface layer can effectively reduce the thickness of pavement structure, improve anti rut ability, and try to avoid the use of high modulus asphalt mixture which is easy to aggravate the reflection crack development.

Abstract:Reflection cracks are one of the most common problems in semi-rigid base pavement. Setting a stress absorption layer can effectively delay the occurrence of reflection cracks, but further improvement is still needed in its interlayer bonding performance and anti-reflection crack performance. Considering the excellent crack resistance of basalt fibers and the good elastic recovery ability of rubber asphalt, it is considered worthwhile to incorporate them into traditional stress absorption layers to improve performance. To simulate the actual pavement layer effect, composite specimens consisting of a cement-stabilized macadam base + basalt fiber rubber asphalt stress-absorbing layer + AC-20 asphalt mixture surface layer were prepared to evaluate their performance through interlayer direct shear tests, interlayer tensile tests, three-point bending tests, and overlay tests (OTs). To determine the optimal fiber blending combination, four fiber lengths (3 cm, 6 cm, 9 cm, 12 cm) and four fiber proportions (120 g/m2, 140 g/m2, 160 g/m2, 180 g/m2) were selected respectively. The specific effects of basalt fibers with different lengths and dosages were analyzed. The results show that compared with the absence of fibers, the improvement of interlayer bonding performance of rubber asphalt with basalt fibers is not significant, and it has certain limitations; however, the improvement of anti-reflective crack performance is significant, with an increase of up to 305.5%. This indicates that the network structure formed by basalt fibers and rubber asphalt stress absorption layer can effectively absorb and disperse external loads, causing an excellent crack resistance effect. Meanwhile, the results indicate that the main factor affecting its interlayer bonding strength and anti-reflective crack performance is the fiber content. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the performance and economy of the stress absorption layer of basalt fiber rubber asphalt, the optimal fiber parameter combination recommended is as fiber length 9 cm and fiber content 160 g/m2.These results can provide a reference for the design and performance evaluation of basalt fiber rubber asphalt stress absorption layer, and have certain application value.

Abstract:The length of basalt fibers affects the performance of asphalt mixtures. To explore the influence of different lengths of basalt fibers on the performance of asphalt mixtures, this study selected basalt fibers with lengths of 6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm to design gradations that were incorporated into asphalt mixtures to prepare specimens. High-temperature rutting tests, immersion Marshall tests, freeze-thaw splitting tests, and low-temperature splitting tests were conducted, resulting in 11 test mix designs and 12 test indicators. Then, a multi-objective grey target decision method was used to optimize the optimal combination ratio of basalt fiber lengths. The results indicate that compared to asphalt mixtures with single-length basalt fibers, incorporating well-combined basalt fibers significantly enhances the high-temperature, low-temperature, and water stability performance of asphalt mixtures. According to the grey target decision method, this study determined that a basalt fiber combination ratio of 3:4:3 for lengths of 6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm provides the best overall performance of asphalt mixtures. Additionally, when designing asphalt mixtures with graded basalt fibers, the inclusion of 9 mm fibers should be the primary control point. These research findings provide important guidance for the enhanced application of basalt fibers in road engineering.

Laboratory Investigation on Pavement Performance of Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixture Under the Coupling Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles and Aging

Abstract:Due to the significant temperature difference and high solar radiation in high-altitude areas, the asphalt pavement has been in freeze-thaw cycles and radiation service conditions for a long time, resulting in a shorter service life. To extend the service life of asphalt pavement in high-altitude areas, this study uses basalt fiber to toughen the asphalt mixture, and the service characteristics of the asphalt pavement under the coupled effects of freeze-thaw cycles and aging were evaluated. First, the freeze-thaw cycles, aging time, and basalt fiber content were selected as independent variables to conduct the Box–Behnken design (BBD) test design. Consequently, the corresponding response surface model was established. Based on the rutting test, three-point bending test, and indirect tensile test, the optimum content of basalt fiber was obtained. Finally, the fatigue properties of the asphalt mixture by the four-point bending fatigue test were compared under the optimum content. The results showed the consequences of freeze-thaw cycles will reduce the road properties of asphalt and give rise to damage to the asphalt; among them, the indirect tensile strength was decreased by 21.7% at most (the number of freeze-thaw cycles from 10 to 30). Aging will reduce the fatigue life of the asphalt mixture, but its dynamic stability, flexural tensile strength, and slitting strength will be enhanced to a certain extent; among them, the dynamic stability can be improved by up to 28.1% (aging from 4 to 12 h). Basalt fiber can increase the flexural tensile strength, dynamic stability, and spitting strength; the optimum content is 0.35% of asphalt mixtures. Furthermore, the fatigue life of basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture can be significantly improved, which can reduce the influence of freeze-thaw cycles and aging. In addition, the unit price of basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture is only 6.9% higher than that of SBS-modified asphalt mixture, which has significant economic benefits. Under experimental conditions, the effect of aging on the properties of the asphalt mixture is greater than that of the freeze-thaw cycle. This research shows that careful consideration of the road behavior of basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture under freeze-thaw cycles and aging is essential for the pavement durability design.

Abstract:Because of the fast deterioration speed of the surface function of conventional asphalt pavement, thin overlayer with many advantages has been applied to the pavement surface. However, due to problems such as insufficient stripping resistance and cracking resistance, the performance of the thin overlayer needs to be further improved. To achieve this target, basalt fiber was introduced into two types of thin overlayer asphalt mixtures (Open graded friction course, OGFC-5, and Stone matrix asphalt mixture, SMA-5). The wheel tracking test and uniaxial penetration test for high temperature deformation resistance, low temperature bending beam test and indirect tensile asphalt (IDEAL) cracking test for cracking resistance, cantabro test for stripping resistance, and friction coefficient test for skid resistance were conducted to evaluate various performance of thin overlayer asphalt mixtures, along with the dynamic modulus test for dynamic mechanical response. The results showed that adding basalt fiber could enhance the high temperature deformation resistance, low temperature cracking resistance, intermediate temperature cracking resistance and stripping resistance of the thin overlayer, while having no significant impact on skid resistance. Furthermore, adding basalt fiber could increase the modulus in the high temperature region and decrease the modulus in the low temperature region of the thin overlayer asphalt mixtures, indicating thin overlayer with basalt fiber presenting superior both high temperature and low temperature performance. In addition, the evaluation indexes of S LT and S HT proposed from dynamic modulus test exhibited good consistency with the results of the performance tests.

Abstract:Basalt fiber reinforced asphalt concrete has better durability, crack resistance and temperature stability than traditional untreated asphalt concrete, being gradually used in pavement engineering in China over recent years. In 2014, basalt fiber reinforced asphalt concrete with high-viscosity asphalt modifier was utilized as the top layer of the deck pavement on Shangci Bridge, which was a 240m prestressed concrete continuous T-beam bridge, located in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. In this paper, a three-dimensional model was established to analyze the distribution law of internal stress and strain of the deck pavement when it was under traffic load. The results indicate that thickness, elastic modulus and interface bonding conditions of the deck overlays have different effects on its internal stress and strain distribution. In another two-dimensional model, the high-temperature viscoelasticity response induced by cycle load was obtained on the basis of laboratory creep tests. Under the effect of the cycle load, the largest horizontal creep strain at 60 is calculated to be 379, accounting for 85% of the total strain.

Abstract:In this study, the pavement performance of AC?13C base asphalt with basal fiber and SBS modified asphalt mixture mixed basalt fiber was studied and compared with common asphalt mixture. High temperature stability,low?temperature crack resistance, water stability and anti?fatigue performance were analyzed by rutting test, low temperature bending test, soggy Marshall test, freezing?thawing cyclic split test and four?point blending fatigue test. The test results indicated that basalt fiber can improve the high temperature stability,the low temperature crack resistance and anti?fatigue performance obviously, but its influence to the water stability need to be studied deeply. Basalt fiber can improve the pavement performance of AC?13 C asphalt mixture effectively and has better effectiveness in SBS modified asphalt mixture.

Abstract:This study is focused on the effect of basalt fiber on the road performance of the asphalt mixture. The road performance of asphalt mixture with different dosages of basalt fiber was comprehensively evaluated using Marshall Stability test, the wheel tracking test, the three-point bending beam test and the freezing-thaw splitting test. The road performance of lignin fiber reinforced asphalt mixture and polyester fiber reinforced asphalt mixture also were tested to compare with the road performance of basalt fiber reinforced asphalt mixture. The results showed that basalt fiber can enhance mechanical properties, the low-and high-temperature performance and water sensitivity of the asphalt mixture significantly. Considering the road performance and economic benefits, the appropriate dosage of basalt fiber is about 0.3%. Marshall Stability (MS), dynamic stability (DS), the maximum bending strain and the tensile strength ratio (TSR) of asphalt mixture with 0.3% basalt fiber were increased by 19.6%, 25.5%, 22.2% and 6.0%, respectively. Basalt fiber has certain advantages in improving the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture by comparison with lignin fiber and polyester fiber.

Abstract:The article is devoted to topical problem of modern urology, one of the lines of surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)--transurethral electrosurgery. Physical principles which are the basis of transurethral electrosurgical interventions and influence of transurethral electrosurgery on prostatic tissue are described. Methods of necessary preoperative examination of patients with BPH are presented. The most often used transurethral electrosurgical technique for destruction of hyperplastic prostatic tissue is described. The results of 5-year use of combination of transurethral electroresection and electrovaporisation in the treatment of BPH and its complications are presented. Ways of prophylaxis of possible complications are proposed.

Abstract:<p>The early damage of the semi-rigid base asphalt pavement is related to the pavement structure modulus's unreasonable matching. In this study, three typical pavement structures were selected to analyze the pavement structures' influence on the pavement service life. A three-dimensional finite element pavement structure model was established. The independent variables are subgrade modulus, base course modulus, and subbase modulus. The deflection, the bottom tensile stress, and maximum shear stress were chosen as the evaluation indexes. The effect of the modulus on the mechanical response of the pavement structure was analyzed. The optimal modulus combination of the pavement structure was determined through multi-factor range analysis. The mechanical response and fatigue life before and after the optimization pavement structure were compared. The results showed that the field measured modulus of Structure 1 and 2 was higher than the design modulus. Moreover, while the modulus of base course and subbase course was increased, the deflection gradually reduced. The base course's bottom tensile stress and the subbase were increased, and the maximum shear stress was basically unchanged. After the modulus combination optimized pavement structure, the mechanical response was significantly reduced. The fatigue life based on the deflection and bottom tensile stress, and the laboratory normalized fatigue equation were significantly increased. By the combination of fatigue performance of pavement materials and pavement structure, it was possible to provide an effective optimization method for the design of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement in this research work.</p>

Optimization design of fiber rubber asphalt gravel sealing layer based on fatigue crack resistance test

Abstract:Crack is one of the main diseases of pavement structure. In order to improve the anti-reflective crack ability of pavement, fiber rubber gravel sealing layer is proposed as the stress absorbing layer. In view of the shortcoming that Mcleod design method can not be associated with road performance, a sealing layer optimization design method based on fatigue crack test is proposed. Firstly, the reinforcement effect of fiber on rubber asphalt was studied through force ductility testing. Secondly, the optimum dosage of fiber, asphalt and gravel was optimized through fatigue cracking resistance test. Finally, the cracking resistance of fiber rubber gravel seal was verified through fracture energy test. The results show that fibers can significantly increase the maximum tensile force and strain yield energy of rubber asphalt, and basalt fiber has the best reinforcement effect. The most obvious effect on cracking resistance performance in the sealing layer is the amount of fiber, followed by the amount of asphalt, and finally the amount of gravel. The optimized material combination with the best crack resistance is 120g/m 2 fiber, 14kg/m 2 gravel and 2.4kg/m 2 rubber asphalt, and the fatigue resistance times can reach 19532 times. The fracture energy of the composite pavement treated by the optimized sealing layer is nearly double that of the non-treated pavement structure, and it has a good anti-crack effect.

Abstract:To optimise the mechanical performance of a buton-rock-asphalt (BRA)- modified asphalt mixture with basalt-fibre (BF), the optimum contents of BF and BRA, as well as the optimal asphalt stone ratio were obtained using response surface methodology (RSM). The feasibility of the mixed-ratio optimised design method was verified via a Marshall stability test. The results indicated that the optimal BF, BRA and asphalt stone ratios were 0.324 %, 22.44 % and 5.23 %, respectively. Moreover, there were some deviations between the average and predicted values of each response index. However, the error range was less than 5 %. A pavement performance index paired comparison matrix calculation method was established, and the pavement performance of the BF-BRA modified asphalt mixture was evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The process comprised eight different content combinations of BF and BRA. The maximum values of dynamic stability, bending strain, immersion Marshall residual stability, and tensile strength ration of BF-BRA modified asphalt mixture were 6512 cycles/mm, 4091 με, 97.4 %, 96.2 % respectively. This indicated that the pavement performance of asphalt mixture can be improved effectively by adding BF and BRA. Additionally, the BF-BRA modified asphalt mixture, which scored highest in pavement performance as evaluated by AHP, aligned with results obtained through response surface methodology(RSM) optimization. This consistency indicates that the BF-BRA modified asphalt mixture derived from RSM exhibits the best pavement performance.

Abstract:The crack control indicator formulae were deduced by the analytical method in order to control the transverse cracks in the continuously reinforced concrete(CRC)pavement structure resulting from the temperature drop and shrinkage effect.The validity of formulae was verified by finite element simulation.Then the effects of basalt fiber reinforced plastics(BFRP)bars material properties and reinforcement program on cracks were specifically analyzed.Results showed that analytical method results accorded with the finite element simulation,which can be used in the reinforcement design of CRC+AC(asphalt concrete)composite pavement reinforced with BFRP bars.The effect of BFRP bar elasticity modulus on crack spacing and width is significant.Thus the relatively high elastic modulus is required to reduce the crack width.The bond stiffness of BFRP bars has great impact on crack spacing and width and it shouldnt be less than20GPa/m.Small diameter and spacing reinforcement program is benefit to control cracks under the same reinforcement ratio.Meanwhile the reinforcement ratio shouldnt be less than 0.5%.Crack spacing and width control indicators should be increased to 2.0mand 1.0mm respectively by taking the corrosion resistance of BFRP into consideration.

Abstract:The asphalt mixture can be reinforced by basalt fiber to improve its pavement performance. Firstly, the Marshall test was conducted on AC-13C asphalt mixture with 0.3% dosage of basalt fiber to determine the optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio. Comparisons between asphalt mixtures with and without basalt fiber were performed by means of immersion Marshall test, wheel tracking test and indirect tensile test. The results show that 0.3% dosage of basalt fiber can enhance asphalt mixtureâ€™s water stability, high temperature stability and low temperature cracking resistance. Secondly, based on asphalt mixtureâ€™s viscoelastic property, the deflection- time curves of basalt reinforced asphalt mixture were obtained through bending creep test. The general Maxwell model was utilized to fit viscoelastic parameters of asphalt mixture, then the wheel tracking test was simulated through finite element model to compare with laboratory test, and the results show that the simulation is very effective and the general Maxwell model can express asphalt mixtureâ€™s viscoelasticity satisfactorily.
Multiscale Fatigue Performance Evaluation of Hydrated Lime and Basalt Fiber Modified Asphalt Mixture

Abstract:Long-life pavement construction is an important research direction for sustainable road development. Fatigue cracking of aging asphalt pavement is one of the main reasons that affects its service life, and improving the fatigue resistance of aging asphalt pavement has become a key factor in promoting the development of long-life pavement. In order to enhance the fatigue resistance of aging asphalt pavement, hydrated lime and basalt fiber were selected to prepare a modified asphalt mixture. The resistance to fatigue is evaluated by the four-point bending fatigue test and self-healing compensation test, based on the energy method, the phenomenon-based approach, and other methods. The results of each method of evaluation were also compared and analyzed. The results indicate that the incorporation of hydrated lime can improve the adhesion of the asphalt binder, while the incorporation of basalt fiber can stabilize the internal structure. When incorporated alone, basalt fiber has no noticeable effect, while hydrated lime significantly improves the fatigue performance of the mixture after thermal aging. Mixing both ingredients produced the best improvement effect under various conditions, with a fatigue life improvement of 53%. In the multi-scale evaluation of fatigue performance, it was found that the initial stiffness modulus was unsuitable as a direct evaluation index of fatigue performance. Using the fatigue damage rate or the stable value of dissipated energy change rate as an evaluation index can clearly characterize the fatigue performance of the mixture before and after aging. The self-healing rate and self-healing decay index clearly reflected the fatigue damage healing process under repeated loading and could be used as relevant indices for evaluating the new-scale fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures.

Influence of Basalt Fiber Morphology on the Properties of Asphalt Binders and Mixtures

Abstract:Basalt fiber (BF) has been proven to be an effective additive for improving the properties of asphalt mixtures. However, the influence of basalt fiber morphology on the properties of asphalt binders and mixtures remains inadequately explored. In this study, chopped basalt fiber (CBF) and flocculent basalt fiber (FBF) were selected to make samples for testing the influence of the two types of basalt fibers on asphalt materials. Fluorescence microscopy was used to obtain the dispersion of fiber in asphalt binders. Then, a temperature sweep test and a multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test were carried out to appraise the rheological characteristics of the binder. Moreover, the performance of the fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture was evaluated by a wheel tracking test, a uniaxial penetration test, an indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT), a low-temperature bending test, a water-immersion stability test, and a freeze–thaw splitting test. The results indicate that the rheological behavior of asphalt binders could be enhanced by both types of fibers. Notably, FBFs exhibit a larger contact area with asphalt mortar compared to CBFs, resulting in improved resistance to deformation under identical shear conditions. Meanwhile, the performance of the asphalt mixture underwent different levels of enhancement with the incorporation of two morphologies of basalt fiber. Specifically, as for the road property indices with FBFs, the enhancement extent of DS in the wheel tracking test, that of RT in the uniaxial penetration test, that of the CTindex in the IDEAL-CT test, and that of εB in the low-temperature trabecular bending test was 3.1%, 6.8%, 15.1%, and 6.5%, respectively, when compared to the CBF-reinforced mixtures. Compared with CBFs, FBFs significantly enhanced the elasticity and deformation recovery ability of asphalt mixtures, demonstrating greater resistance to high-temperature deformation and a more pronounced effect in delaying the onset of middle- and low-temperature cracking. Additionally, the volume of the air void for asphalt mixtures containing FBFs was lower than that containing CBFs, thereby reducing the likelihood of water damage due to excessive voids. Consequently, the moisture susceptibility enhancement of CBFs to asphalt mixture was not obvious, while FBFs could improve moisture susceptibility by more than 20%. Overall, the impact of basalt fibers with different morphologies on the properties of asphalt pavement materials varies significantly, and the research results may provide reference values for the choice of engineering fibers.

Abstract:Incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into asphalt mixtures achieves astonishingly environmental and economic benefits. However, there is hesitation to use higher RAP content due to the concern regarding the deterioration in pavement performance, especially the cracking resistance. Basalt fiber has been considered an effective additive to reinforce the performance of asphalt mixtures and, subsequently, the reinforcement effect is also expected for high-RAP content mixtures. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of basalt fiber on the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures with 0%, 30%, 40%, and 50% RAP contents against high-temperature performance, moisture susceptibility, low-temperature and intermediate-temperature cracking resistance, based on the wheel-tracking test, the uniaxial penetration test, the freeze-thaw splitting test, the low-temperature bending beam test, the semicircular bend fracture test and the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test, respectively. In addition, a performance-space diagram was developed to determine the mixture performance shift caused by basalt fiber. The results showed that adding basalt fiber compensated for the detrimental effect caused by RAP, leading to significant enhancement in moisture susceptibility and low- and intermediate-temperature cracking resistance of mixtures with high RAP content, along with the enhancement in high-temperature performance, indicating that basalt fiber can contribute to the use of high RAP content.

Abstract:Semi-rigid base materials are used in all pavement grades and are shown to have excellent stability. Furthermore, semi-rigid bases are known for their stiffness and strong frost resistance. However, these semi-rigid base materials are starting to require significant levels of maintenance and repair due to wear and tear. Maintenance is performed primarily to add pavement and resurfacing material, with the hope that the resurfacing layer can withstand large tensile and shear forces at the cracks of the base, thus increasing the overall durability of the pavement. Furthermore, crushing technology used for cement panel maintenance can be used to eliminate cracks in the overlay layer thus improving overall service life expectancy. The studies below study the application of crushing technology to a semi-rigid base and the subsequent alternation to the structural design of the pavement. Furthermore, the mechanical index sensitivities of pavement structures post-rubblization were analyzed using finite elements. Mechanical indexes with high sensitivity were subsequently adopted as structural damage control indexes. These indexes were used to optimize overlay structure and provide a reference for structural design post-rubblization.
