Abstract:Metazachlor (MTZ) herbicide oxidation initiated by sulfate radical anion (SO4●-) in water and gas was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd)//M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. Mechanisms and kinetics of MTZ oxidation via three oxidation mechanisms were investigated, including abstraction (Abs), addition (Add), and single electron transfer (SET). Results show that most oxidation reactions are favorable and spontaneous in both phases. The overall rate constants at 298.15K in water is 5.06 × 1010 M-1 s-1 whereas the one in gas is many times higher, 1.51 × 1013 M-1 s-1. Notably, the degradation in water is non-selected with the fastest reaction being SET with 5.76 × 109 M-1 s-1 and 11.39% of the kapp and Г, respectively. On the contrary, the one in gas almost occurs via Abs reaction with the fastest one being Abs-H24 with kapp and Г values being 1.08 × 1013 M-1 s-1 and 71.76%. In addition, the influence of temperature on the degradation kinetics is evaluated. Results show that the degradation in water increases as a function of temperature (283 to 323 K), while the drawback trend is found in the gas phase from 253 to 323 K. Diving into the chemical nature of the hydrogen abstraction processes, it is noteworthy that the most predominant Abs reactions at the methyl and methylene groups occur via the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Overall, the SO4●--based degradation is an effective and potential method for removing MTZ herbicide.

Study on Kinetics of Microcystin-LR Degradation by Ozonation

Abstract:A study was made of the degradation of microcystin-LR (MC LR) by ozonation and its kinetics.The microcystins were extracted in cyanobacteria blooms from Taihu Lake in Wuxi,China.An investigation was also conducted on the effects of ozone dose,MC LR initial concentration,pH value and some anions.The results indicate that MC LR can be effectively degraded by ozonation and the reaction fits well with the first-order kinetics.The rate constant is invariable with different MC LR initial concentrations.However,when the dosage of ozone changes from 0.31 mg·L-1 to 1.35 mg·L-1,the rate constant increases from 0.010 3 min-1 to 0.040 7 min-1.The rate constant decreases from 0.252 8 min-1 to 0.009 9 min-1 with pH value from 3.08 to 10.08.Under acidic condition,the degradation of MC LR is more sensitive to pH value.NO3 - has positive effect on the degradation of MC-LR while CO3 2- has negative effect on it,and the effects of SO4 2- and Cl- on it are not obvious.According to their effects on the degradation rate,the four anions can be arranged as NO-3,Cl-,SO2-4,CO2-3.

Abstract:The kinetics and degradation process of meta-Chloronitrobenzene by ozonation in aqueous solution were investigated. Compared to para-chlorobenzoic acid, the rate constant of meta-Chloronitrobenzene with O-3 was 0.59 L/(mol.s), while that of the reaction with (OH)-O-center dot was 2.07 x 10(9) L/(mol.s). The main intermediate products were chloronitrophenols and some carboxylic acids. Neither chlorophenols nor nitrophenols was detected. The five-day biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand were determined. The ratio of the former to the latter was above 0.3 at 20 min. It was feasible to perform a continuous biotreatment step after 20 min of ozonation.

Abstract:The reaction kinetics and degradation mechanisms of the herbicides metribuzin (MTZ) and metamitron (MTT) were evaluated during conventional and tourmaline-catalyzed ozonation processes. The tourmaline catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The reactivities of these two herbicides with ozone (O3) are low due to their refractory characteristics, so catalytic ozonation is an ideal way to effectively degrade them. The effects of catalyst dosage, pH, temperature and ozone concentration on catalytic degradation of MTZ and MTT were investigated. Based on the results from quenching experiments and calculation of second-order rate constants (k O3, MTZ (4.82 ± 0.42 M−1 s−1), k O3, MTT (13.35 ± 0.62 M−1 s−1) and k •OH, MTT ((6.90 ± 0.51) × 109 M−1 s−1)), it was found that oxidation of the pollutants was mediated by decomposition of O3 to produce •OH. Twelve MTZ degradation products and five MTT degradation products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and the reaction mechanisms were analyzed. In addition, the potential toxicities of the derivatives formed during catalytic ozonation were examined. The degradation products of the two pollutants exhibited different toxicity profiles. The environmental-friendliness and efficient catalytic properties of tourmaline suggest that it has great potential as a heterogenous and green catalyst.

Abstract:In this study, it was found that monochloramine induced the formation of reactive species during ozonation of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT). CMIT was found recalcitrant to chloramine. However, chloramine promoted the degradation of CMIT by ozonation significantly. Hydroxyl radicals contributed most to CMIT degradation (87%) during ozone/chloramine synergistic oxidation process (SOP). The hydroxyl radical exposure during ozone/chloramine SOP was around 7.9 times higher than that of ozonation process. The hydroxyl radical yield of ozone/chloramine SOP was estimated to be 32%. The reaction mechanisms between ozone and chloramine were postulated to include the oxygen transfer reaction to form singlet oxygen, and the formation of hydroxyl radical by the insertion pathway or electron transfer pathway. Chloramine dosage and pH are essential influencing factors. The degradation of CMIT increased from 41% to 74% with increasing chloramine dosage (0-20 μM), and then decreased to 65% when chloramine dosage continually increased to 40 μM. Ozone/chloramine SOP showed better performance at acidic or neutral conditions than basic condition. Based on the intermediates identified, the degradation pathway of CMIT during ozone/chloramine SOP included the oxidation of sulfur atom and the substitution of chlorine group by hydroxyl group. The oxidation of sulfur atom induced lower toxicities of transformation products. The toxicities of hydroxylation products were lower to fish and algae, but higher to daphnia. Based on the GC-ECD results, only trichloromethane (1.94 μg/L) was detected after ozone/chloramine SOP, accounting for 0.17% (μM/μM) of the CMIT removal.

Abstract:The occurrence of the gasoline additive methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE) in the environment has received considerable attention.The pollutant is frequently found in the groundwater due to leaking of underground storage tanks or pipelines.This research investigated the reaction kinetics of degradation for the oxidation of MTBE by O3/H2O2.The results showed: pH and temperature increase could increase the reaction rate.And the rate of MTBE degradation exhibited pseudo-first-order behavior.At pH of 6.5,the rate constant k=1.20×106exp(-40.5/RT).
Effieiency and Mechanism of Dichlorvos Removal by Ozonation

Abstract:The efficiency and mechanism of ozonation of dichlorvos(DDV) had been studied,and experimental result showed that ozone could effectively decompose DDV in the water,and the removal efficiency of DDV could be increased under basic condition.More than 90% of the DDV was removed within the initial 5 min.During the DDV ozonation degradation process,organic chlorine was almost completely converted into chloride.In the initial reaction stage,most of the TOC decomposition was finished during the first 5 min.The TOC removal rate increased with the increasing of ozone concentration.The analysis of GSMS showed that the main intermediate products were trimethyl phosphate,dichloroacetic acid(DCAA) and dichloro acetaldehyde.The quantitative analysis of DCAA showed that pH and reaction time had no obvious influence on the formation of DCAA.During the DDV ozonation process,there were three reaction modes: hydrolysis,direct ozone molecular oxidation and free radical reaction.The double bond of ethylene in the DDV molecule was first attacked by hydroxyl radical(·OH) to form dimethyl phosphate and dichloroethylene radical,which were further oxidized to other kinds of product or mineralized to phosphoric acid,carbondioxide and chloride.

Abstract:To establish an efficient oxidation process for ZJ0777 degradation, the effects of operating parameters such as initial concentrations of ZJ0777, H2 O2 and FeSO4??7H2 O were examined during treatment with Fenton reagent. Firstly, the effect of initial ZJ0777 concentration was tested between 0. 12 mmol/L and 0. 48 mmol/L. More than 90% of ZJ0777 was degraded after 32 h with an initial concentration of 0. 12 mmol/L and in 48 h with an initial concentration of 0. 24 mmol/L. At an initial concentration of 0. 48 mmol/L, only 87% conversion of ZJ0777 could be obtained in 84 h. And the influence of initial amount of H2 O2 between 150 and 300 mmol/L was analyzed. The effective degradation of ZJ0777 was reached. The degradation rate was found to increase with increasing dosages of H2 O2 . Further, the effect of initial FeSO4??7H2 O concentrations on the homogeneous degradation of ZJ0777 was also investigated. The increase of Fe2+ doses accelerated the degradation of ZJ0777 in the range of 5 -20 mmol/L. Addition of Fe2+ became inefficient and unnecessary. Kinetic analysis indicated that ZJ0777 degradation by the homogeneous Fenton reaction could be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction model and the apparent activation energy was 75. 34 kJ/mol.
A study of synergistic oxidation between ozone and chlorine on benzalkonium chloride degradation: reactive species and degradation pathway

Abstract:Ozonation and chlorination are widely used for disinfection or micropollutant elimination in water treatment or reclamation fields. It was found in this study that the presence of free chlorine increased the production of reactive species significantly during ozonation of dodecylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride (DDBAC, quaternary ammonium compound). DDBAC hardly underwent degradation by the chlorination process. However, the removal of DDBAC by ozonation after 10 min increased from 22% to 92%, when the dosage of free chlorine increased from 0 to 112 mg/L. pH affected the synergistic effect of ozone/chlorine oxidation of DDBAC. The promotion effect of free chlorine was greater at acidic conditions than that at basic conditions. The radical quenching experiments suggested that various reactive species formed during ozone/chlorine oxidation of DDBAC. The contributions of ozone, reactive species that could or could not be quenched by tBuOH were 8%, 78% and 13%, respectively. In the mixed system of DDBAC and pCBA, the degradation percentage of DDBAC and pCBA after 15 min increased from 31.0% and 13.1% to 53.8% and 28.3% with the presence of chlorine, respectively. Based on the steady-state concentration assumption, the steady-state concentration of center dot OH during ozone/chlorine oxidation of DDBAC was 2.3 times higher than that during the sole ozonation process, being 7.5 x 10(-14) M and 3.3 x 10(-14) M, respectively. Ten oxidation products were identified by HPLC-MS/MS during ozone/chlorine oxidation of DDBAC. Three degradation mechanisms were observed: the hydrogen abstraction of the alkyl chain by hydroxyl radical; the cleavage of the benzyl-nitrogen bond of DDBAC; and the addition of hydroxyl radical on the aromatic ring or the alkyl chain.
Structural Econometric Tests Of General Equilibrium Theory On Data From Large-Scale Experimental Financial Markets

Abstract:We develop structural econometric tests of asset pricing theory for application to data from experimental financial markets. The tests differ from those used in the analysis of field data because they verify the consistency between prices and allocations, as opposed to merely testing whether only prices satisfy equilibrium restrictions. Our tests also differ from standard field tests because the experimentor controls (knows) the very parameters that need to be estimated in the field. The tests build on an extension of general equilibrium theory where agents’ choices need not be predicted perfectly, rendering the theory more realistic, without however destroying the main pricing results. The tests are implemented on two series of large-scale financial markets experiments. The first series is the certainty equivalent of the second one, with nonlinearity in payoffs replacing uncertainty. The goal of the tests is to resolve an apparent price-allocation paradox in the experiments, namely, why asset prices can satisfy theoretical restrictions (in our case, the CAPM) when allocations deviate substantially (portfolio separation fails). Most puzzling is the finding that allocations seem not to be any closer to CAPM predictions than when prices grossly violate CAPM restrictions. We find that our theory explains the paradox in both sets of experiments. That is, when end-of-period prices are such that the market portfolio is close to mean-variance efficient (the CAPM pricing prediction), the allocations and our theory explain why. When end-of-period prices make the market portfolio far from mean-variance optimal, our tests reject.
Ozonolysis of ketoprofen in polluted water: Reaction pathways, kinetics, removal efficiency, and health effects

Abstract:Ketoprofen (KET), as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug frequently detected in aqueous environments, is a threat to human health due to its accumulation and low biodegradability, which requires the transformation and degradation of KET in aqueous environments. In this paper, the reaction process of ozone-initiated KET degradation in water was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) method at the M06-2X/6-311++g(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-31+g(d,p) level. The detailed reaction path of KET ozonation is proposed. The thermodynamic results show that ozone-initiated KET degradation is feasible. Under ultraviolet irradiation, the reaction of ozone with water can also produce OH radicals (HO·) that can react with KET. The degradation reaction of KET caused by HO· was further studied. The kinetic calculation illustrates that the reaction rate (1.99 × 10-1 (mol/L)-1 sec-1) of KET ozonation is relatively slow, but the reaction rate of HO· reaction is relatively high, which can further improve the degradation efficiency. On this basis, the effects of pollutant concentration, ozone concentration, natural organic matter, and pH value on degradation efficiency under UV/O3 process were analyzed. The ozonolysis reaction of KET is not sensitive to pH and is basically unaffected. Finally, the toxicity prediction of oxidation compounds produced by degradation reaction indicates that most of the degradation products are harmless, and a few products containing benzene rings are still toxic and have to be concerned. This study serves as a theoretical basis for analyzing the migration and transformation process of anti-inflammatory compounds in the water environment.
Accelerated degradation of micro-pollutant by combined UV and chlorine dioxide: Unexpected inhibition of chlorite formation

Abstract:UV/chlorine dioxide (ClO2) process can be intentionally or accidently conducted and is potentially effective in micro-pollutants degradation. UV irradiation can promote ClO2 decay and subsequently result in the formation of reactive radicals. Hence, the co-exposure of ClO2 and UV exhibited a synergetic effect on metribuzin (MET) degradation. The MET degradation was promoted by UV/ClO2 with a rate of 0.089 min-1 at pH 7.5, which was around 2.4 folds the total of rates caused by single ClO2 (0.004 min-1) and single UV (0.033 min-1). Reactive radicals mainly HO• and reactive chlorine species were involved in the acceleration effect, and contributed to 59%-67% of the total degradation rate of MET during UV/ClO2 under pHs 5.5-7.5. Among them, HO• was the predominant contributor and the contribution rate gradually rose under higher pH. Chlorite (ClO2-) and chlorate (ClO3-) formation has been the major concern of ClO2 oxidation. However, a comparison of their formation during UV/ClO2 and ClO2 oxidation is rarely reported. Herein, during MET degradation by ClO2, only ClO2- was identified with the highest amount of 1.17 mg L-1. Conversely, during MET degradation by UV/ClO2, only ClO3- was identified with the highest amount of 0.68 mg L-1, showing an upward trend with prolonging treatment time. Furthermore, organic halogenated DBPs formation after 24 h post-chlorination with UV/ClO2 and ClO2 pre-treatments was comparatively evaluated. Organic DBPs formation after post-chlorination was higher with UV/ClO2 pre-treatment compared to ClO2 pre-treatment. The overall concentration of DBPs produced with 30 min UV/ClO2 pre-treatment was about 4.5 times that with 1min UV/ClO2 pre-treatment. This study provided useful reference for the application of UV/ClO2 in micro-pollutants degradation.
Ozonation of Trimethoprim in Aqueous Solution: Identification of Reaction Products and Their Toxicity

Abstract:This work aimed to better understand the zonation process of a typical antibiotic pharmaceutical, trimethoprim in aqueous solution. The parent compound was almost completely degraded with ozone dose up to 3.5 mg/L with no mineralization. Twenty one degradation products were identified using an electrospray quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Several ozonation pathways were proposed including hydroxylation, demethylation, carbonylation, deamination and methylene group cleavage. Two species of luminescent bacteria Photobacterium phosphoreum and Vibrio qinghaiensis were selected to assess the toxicity of ozonation products. For P. phosphoreum, higher level of toxicity was observed compared to the parent compound, but a negligible toxicity change was observed for V. qinghaiensis, indicating different modes of action for the same water sample. This was further confirmed by quantitative structure-active relationship analysis. This work proves the dominant role of ozone rather than hydroxyl radicals in the reaction and the potential risk after zonation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Chlorophene Degradation by Combined Ultraviolet Irradiation and Ozonation.

Abstract:Ozonation combined with UV irradiation (UV/O(3)) is an advanced oxidation technique that is very promising for the destruction of organic compounds in aqueous solution. In this study, chlorophene was chosen as a model substrate to investigate the effects of pH, initial substrate concentration, ozone dose, and UV light intensity in degradation experiments. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 2.4 × 10(-2), 9.8 × 10(-4), and 6.4 × 10(-2) min(-1) for O(3), UV, and UV/O(3) treatment, respectively. Clearly, UV-enhanced ozonation leads to a synergetic increase in the overall degradation efficiency. Comparative experiments were performed to investigate the effect of the matrix (distilled water or sewage) on chlorophene removal. The organic compounds in sewage retarded the rate of chlorophene removal by 38%, probably by competitively reacting with the oxidizing agent and screening light. The compound 2-benzoylbenzo-1,4-quinone, benzo-1,4-quinone, hydroquinone and maleic acid were identified as primary intermediates by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The concentrations of acetic, formic and oxalic anions were detected by ion chromatography. A possible degradation pathway is proposed on the basis of the reaction products identified.
MnO2/TiO2-Catalyzed ozonolysis: enhancing Pentachlorophenol degradation and understanding intermediates

Abstract:Pentachlorophenol is a pesticide widely known for its harmful effects on sewage, causing harm to the environment. In previous studies, our group identified adsorption as a crucial factor in catalytic ozonation processes, and subsequent observations revealed the catalyst's role in reducing toxicity during degradation. In this research, we quantified organochlorine intermediates and low molecular weight organic acids generated under optimal pH conditions (pH 9), with and without the catalyst. Additionally, we assessed the reactivity of these intermediates through theoretical calculations. Our findings indicate that the catalyst reduces the duration of intermediates. Additionally, the presence of CO 2 suggests enhanced mineralization of pentachlorophenol, a process notably facilitated by the catalyst. Theoretical calculations, such as Fukui analysis, offer insights into potential pathways for the dechlorination of aromatic molecules by radicals like OH, indicating the significance of this pathway.

Abstract:2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) is extensively consumed in industrial production and may cause environmental damages. The effect of halide ions on the decomposition of 2,4,6-TCP has often been overlooked. In this study, the bromide ion was found to have a stronger negative impact on 2,4,6-TCP degradation than chloride ion in the O3 system, and led to the formation of adsorbable organic halogens (AOX). Kinetic modeling demonstrated that the concentration of various radicals was largely depended on the solution pH, and stronger basicity not only contributed to the mineralization of 2,4,6-TCP, but also inhibited the formation of halogenated by-products. Combining the intermediate identification and quantum chemical calculation, the degradation pathways of 2,4,6-TCP during ozone oxidation process were proposed. The toxicity test and ECOSAR simulation demonstrated that the acute toxicity of some 2,4,6-TCP degradation intermediates was relatively higher than their parent compound. With high concentrations of halide ions, the ozone-treated solution showed greater toxicity than the originator 2,4,6-TCP solution. These results illustrate that the ozone treatment of the halide-containing wastewater may cause potential ecological hazards and its application needs to be more cautious.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Treatment by ozone water is an emerging technology for the degradation of pesticide residues in vegetables. The ozone dissolved in water generates hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot), which are highly effective in decomposing organic substances, such as malathion and carbosulfan. RESULTS We found that washing pak choi with 2.0 mg L-1 ozone water for 30 min resulted in 58.3% and 38.2% degradation of the malathion and carbosulfan contents respectively, and the degradation rates of these pure pesticides were 83.0% and 66.3% respectively. In addition, the 'first + first'-order reaction kinetic model was found to predict the trend in the pesticide content during ozone water treatment. Based on investigations by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with the structures of the pesticides, the by-products generated were identified. More specifically, the ozonation-based degradation of carbosulfan generated carbofuran and benzofuranol, whereas malathion produced succinic acid and phosphoric acid. Although some new harmful compounds were formed during degradation of the parent pesticides, these were only present in trace quantities and were transient intermediates that eventually disappeared during the reaction. CONCLUSION Our results, therefore, indicate that ozone water treatment technology for pesticide residue degradation is worthy of popularization and application. (c) 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
Degradation Mechanism of Ozonation of Endocrine Disruptor(Alachlor) in Drinkingwater

Abstract:In this study, the degradation mechanism of an endocrine disruptor, alachlor, by ozonation was investigated. HPLC, GC, IC and UV were used to follow the intermediate and ultimate oxidation products produced in the ozonation of alachlor. The results showed that 94% alachlor was degraded after being directly ozonated for 30 min at acidic condition. But alachlor could not be completely degraded to CO2 and H2O, which was 35 percentage of TOC removal after being ozonated for 180 min. Several intermediate oxidation products were observed by UV and HPLC. Organic acids of small molecular were produced in the ozonation, resulting in the decreasing of pH from 5.96 to 3.94. The broken of alachlor structure was verified by the creation of inorganic ions in the ozonation.
Influence of pesticide mixture on their heterogeneous atmospheric degradation by ozone and OH radicals

Abstract:Pesticides in the atmosphere can exist in both gaseous and particulate phases due to their semi-volatile properties. They can undergo degradation when exposed to atmospheric oxidants like ozone and hydroxyl radicals. The majority of studies on the atmospheric reactivity of pesticides study them in combination, without considering potential mixture effects that could induce uncertainties in the results. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap, through laboratory studies using a flow reactor, and by evaluating the degradation kinetics of pendimethalin mixed with folpet, tebuconazole, and S-metolachlor, which were simultaneously adsorbed on hydrophobic silica particles that mimic atmospheric aerosols. The comparison with other mixtures, including pendimethalin, from the literature has shown similar reactivity with ozone and hydroxyl radicals, indicating that the degradation kinetics of pesticides is independent of the mixture. Moreover, the degradation rates of the four pesticides under study indicate that they are not or slightly degraded by ozone, with half-lives ranging from 29 days to over 800 days. In contrast, when exposed to hydroxyl radicals, tebuconazole exhibited the fastest reactivity, with a half-life of 4 days, while pendimethalin had a half-life of 17 days.

Abstract:The reactions between chlorobenzene(CB) and ozone have been studied comprehensively in this paper. Chlorobenzene is a commonly found chlorinated aromatic volatile organic compound(VOC), and its emission into the atmosphere can cause harm to the ecosystem and human health. The frequent occurrence of mineral particles from sandstorms exerts a significant influence on the atmospheric chemistry of the troposphere. Mineral particles are abundant in SiO2 and Al2O3 content. Therefore, we investigated the homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction processes of CB and ozone in the atmosphere by using density functional theory (DFT) method at the M06-2X/6-311++g(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-31+g(d,p) level. The atmospheric fate, reaction rate and toxicity evaluation of CB ozonation were studied in the gas-phase section. Toxicity evaluation results showed that ozonation of CB could effectively reduce its toxicity. For the heterogeneous process, we simulated three types of SiO2 clusters and nine types of (Al2O3)n clusters, and studied the configurations of CB adsorbed on the cluster surfaces. We found that adsorption of CB on the SiO2 clusters was achieved through hydrogen bonding, while adsorption of CB on the Al2O3 clusters was achieved through both hydrogen bonding and metal bonding. The energy for CB adsorption on the (Al2O3)n cluster surface was higher than that for the SixOy(OH)z cluster surface, and both types of clusters exhibited efficient adsorption of CB. As the SixOy(OH)z clusters grew larger, the rates for the reactions between O3 and CB increased. CB travelled long distances along the Al2O3 clusters, leading to an extended influence range.
