Abstract:Optical properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were investigated along a latitudinal transect (67 degrees-77 degrees N) in upper water (<80 m depth) of the western Arctic Ocean. The absorption coefficient at 280 nm was 0.48-1.25 m(-1), with the average for the oligotrophic basin area (1.04 +/- 0.08 m(-1)) being slightly higher than that of the productive shelf area (0.95 +/- 0.16 m(-1)), implying a decoupling effect between CDOM concentration and biological productivity in the western Arctic Ocean. The spectral slope coefficient S270-350 was negatively correlated with salinity, indicating that DOM molecular weight increases with salinity, and may be affected by melt-water input. Four fluorescent components were identified by excitation emission matrices elaborated by parallel factor analysis, including three humic-like (C1, C3, and C4) components and one protein-like (C2) component. Significant increases in concentrations of terrestrially derived humic-like C3 and C4 components with salinity were observed in the basin, mainly controlled by the physical mixing of surface fresh water and subsurface inflowing Pacific Ocean water. Terrestrial material carried by Pacific inflow is thus an important factor affecting the distribution of CDOM fluorescence components. The C3 and C4 fluorescence components may be useful as tracers of Pacific water in the western Arctic Ocean.

Abstract:Sources and molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal rivers have been tightly linked with its reactivity and fate, thus influencing element and nutrient cycling. The DOM in coastal rivers is usually sourced from both terrestrial and marine inputs, with further complication by anthropogenic activities, which is less understood in coastal rivers located near populated industrial regions. In this study, DOM in a typical anthropogenically influenced coastal river, Daliao River, was analyzed for optical analyses and for molecular composition via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to give a better scope of composition and sources of DOM. The DOM was enriched in autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs at upstream sites according to high chlorophyll a concentrations, strong protein-like fluorescence, and nonoxygen heteroatomic CHOS formulae (19-24% by relative peak intensity) detected by FT-ICR MS analysis. A series of surfactant-like formulae, indicative of wastewater inputs, were identified and showed a decreasing trend from upstream to the river mouth. Compared with large world rivers, the DOM of Daliao River is characterized by higher abundances of heteroatomic (excluding O) formulae and molecular lability, which is likely caused by strong autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs. In general, we demonstrate that in addition to optical properties, the molecular composition can assess the specific anthropogenic imprints and molecular lability of DOM, which is essential for constraining sources and identifying processes during the transit of DOM from the river to estuary with increasing urbanization and industrialization.
Seasonal Variations of Dissolved Organic Matter in the East China Sea Using EEM-PARAFAC and Implications for Carbon and Nutrient Cycling

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a very important role in the dynamics of different biogeochemical processes in the global marine carbon cycle. Seasonal variations of DOM were investigated using dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation emission matrix–parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) in Niushan Island in the East China Sea, off southeast Zhejiang, in winter, spring, and summer 2017. A strong positive correlation between temperature and salinity was observed in winter, whereas negative correlations were obtained in spring and summer. The results suggest that the water in the study area originates from the Changjiang River water coinciding with the direction of winds in winter. On the other hand, the Taiwan Strait water flows northward on the eastern part of the study area in summer and spring. The DOC concentration showed significant seasonal variations and was much lower in summer than in winter, but largely independent of the temperature, degree of absorption and intensity of the fluorescence component. Three tryptophan-like components (C1, C2 and C4) and one humic-like component were identified by the PARAFAC model in winter, while two tryptophan-like components (C1 and C2) and two humic-like components were illustrated in summer. The seasonal variations of DOC concentrations and intensities of the fluorescence components in the study area from winter to summer suggest that the waters in this area were influenced mainly by mixing water of the Changjiang River and the Taiwan Strait. A strongly linear relationship was found between the nutrient and the fluorescence intensities of different components in winter, reflecting the profound impacts of the dynamics of DOM on nutrient cycling.
Coupling between chromophoric dissolved organic matter and dissolved inorganic carbon in Indian estuaries

Abstract:This study investigates the coupling between Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) in eighteen Indian estuaries across salinity gradient of the east and west coasts during the monsoon season, characterized by significant river discharge. The hypothesis that humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA), prominent in estuarine CDOM, closely correspond to the 'organic alkalinity' (Aorg) component of total alkalinity is examined. In most estuaries, specifically those along the northeast coast (NE) and southwest coast (SW), a significant linear relationship exists between DIC, CDOM abundance, and pH level. Notably, minor estuaries along the southeast coast (SE) and northwest coast (NW) exhibit elevated DIC levels beyond what this relationship predicts. These estuaries also reveal heightened ammonium levels, increased δ15N values, and decreased δ13C values, indicative of anthropogenic influence. CDOM properties, such as spectral slope (S300-500) and spectral slope ratio (SR, S275-295:S350-400), align with these findings, with SE and NW estuaries displaying higher values. On average, CDOM contributes 110.5 μM (6.8 %) to DIC in NE, 390.7 μM (11 %) in SE, 24.4 μM (4.8 %) in SW, and 122.2 μM (4 %) in NW estuaries. The relationship between total alkalinity minus DIC (TA-DIC) and pH25 suggests that CDOM, mediated by HA/FA, buffers the inorganic carbon system in estuaries. This buffering capacity weakens at elevated DIC levels, and this condition is marked by anomalous SR values compared to the baseline salinity-SR linear regression. This Study suggests that estuarine CDOM could largely represent "organic alkalinity" and could help monitor acidification in estuaries.
Spatiotemporal Characterization of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) and CDOM-DOC Relationships for Highly Polluted Rivers

Abstract:Spectral characteristics of CDOM (Chromophoric dissolved organic matter) in water columns are a key parameter for bio-optical modeling. Knowledge of CDOM optical properties and spatial discrepancy based on the relationship between water quality and spectral parameters in the Yinma River watershed with in situ data collected from highly polluted waters are exhibited in this study. Based on the comprehensive index method, the riverine waters showed serious contamination; especially the chemical oxygen demand (COD), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg) and dissolved oxygen (DO) were out of range of the contamination warning. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total suspended matter (TSM) with prominent non-homogenizing were significantly high in the riverine waters, but chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) was the opposite. The ternary phase diagram showed that non-algal particle absorption played an important role in total non-water light absorption (>50%) in most sampling locations, and mean contributions of CDOM were 13% and 22% in the summer and autumn, respectively. The analysis of the ratio of absorption at 250–365 nm (E250:365) and the spectral slope (S275–295) indicated that CDOM had higher aromaticity and molecular weight in autumn than in summer, which is consistent with the results of water quality and the CDOM relative contribution rate. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the environmental variables OSM (Organic suspended matter) had a strong correlation with CDOM absorption, followed by heavy metals, e.g., Mn, Hg and Cr6+. However, for the specific UV absorbance (SUVA254), the seasonal values showed opposite results compared with the reported literature. The potential reasons were that more UDOM (uncolored dissolved organic matter) from human sources (wastewater effluent) existed in the waters. Terrigenous inputs simultaneously are in relation to the aCDOM(440)-DOC relationship with the correlation coefficient of 0.90 in the summer (two-tailed, p < 0.01), and 0.58 in the autumn (two-tailed, p < 0.05). Spatial distribution of the CDOM parameters exhibited that the downstream regions focused on dry land have high CDOM molecular weight and aromatic hydrocarbon. Partial sampling locations around the cities or countries generally showed abnormal values due to terrigenous inputs. As a bio-optical model parameter, the spectral characteristic of CDOM is helpful in adjusting the derived algorithms in highly polluted environments. The study on organic carbon and pollutants in highly polluted waters had an important contribution to global carbon balance estimation and water environment protection.

Conservative Behavior of CDOM Optical Properties in Changjiang River Estuary, China

Abstract:A cruise from Luchaogang Dock to Shengsi Island was carried out on 15th August 2008 for acquiring 16 surface water samples in the Changjiang River estuary, China. Sea surface salinity (SSS) and CDOM absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy measurements were obtained. Over a salinity range of 8.4-26.5o/oo, CDOM absorption coefficient at 355nm ranged from 0.42-1.44m-1, and the mean value for a355nm was 0.86 m-1, showing relatively variable optical properties of the waters in the Changjiang River estuary region at the same scale and range as that in other Chinese estuaries and coastal waters. The values for S ranged from 14.9 to 20.1μm-1, with the average value of 17.1μm-1. Three distinct principal fluorophore types including tryptophan-like (T), UV humic-like (A) and visible-terrestrial humic-like (C) fluorophores were observed here, but marine fluorophore (visible-marine humic fluorophore (M) was absent in all sampling stations, suggesting its dominant controlling role for the diluted water masses in the Changjiang River. Both the aCDOM and the S value as well as the normalized concentration of FCDOM tend to decrease from the inner to the outer estuary; their strong opposite relationship with salinity imply a conservative behavior of terrestrial source matters in the Changjiang River estuary during the mixture of the Changjiang diluted waters and marine waters, suggesting that it is appropriate to adopt CDOM optical properties as a tracer of the diluted water masses in the Changjiang River and its terrestrial source matters.
Dissolved Organic Carbon Source Attribution in the Changjiang Outflow Region of the East China Sea

Abstract:The variable optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) under the complicated dynamic marine environment make it difficult to establish a robust inversion algorithm for quantifying the dissolved organic carbon (DOC). To better understand the main factors affecting the relationship between the DOC and the CDOM when the Changjiang diluted water (CDW) interacts with the marine currents on the wide continental shelf, we measured the DOC concentration, the absorption, and the fluorescence spectra of the CDOM along the main axis and the northern boundary of the CDW. The sources of DOC and their impacts on the relationship between the optical properties of the DOC and CDOM are discussed. We reached the following conclusions: There are strong positive correlations between the absorptive and fluorescent properties of the DOC and the CDOM as a whole. The dilution of the terrestrial DOC carried by the CDW through mixing with saline sea water is the dominant mechanism controlling the characteristics of the optical properties of the CDOM. CDOM optical properties can be adopted to establish inversion models in retrieving DOC in Changjiang River Estuary. It is concluded that the introduction of extra DOC from different sources is the main factor causing the regional optical complexity leading to the bias of DOC estimation rather than removal mechanism. As whole, the input of polluted water from Huangpujiang River with abnormally high a(355) and Fs(355) will induce the overestimation of DOC. In the main axis of CDW, the impact from autochthonous DOC input to the correlation between DOC and CDOM can be neglected in comparison with conservative dilution procedure. The relationship between the DOC and the CDOM on the northern boundary of the CDW is more complicated, which can be attributed to the continuous input of terrestrial material from the Old Huanghe Delta by the Subei Coastal Current, the input of materials from the Yellow sea by the Yellow Sea Warm Western Coastal Current, and the input of materials from the Changjiang Basin by the CDW. The results of this study suggest that long-term observations of the regional variations in the DOM inputs from multiple sources in the interior of the CDW are essential, which is conducive to assess the degree of impact to the DOC estimation through the CDOM in the East China Sea.

Abstract:Rivers transport organic matter originating within the estuary and terrestrial sources to the coastal ocean. The seasonal variations in the magnitude of river discharge alter the sources of particulate organic matter (POM) in the estuary. In order to examine the dominant sources of POM in the estuary, monthly samples were collected and analyzed for the isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen of POM along with hydrographic characteristics of water column data in the Godavari estuary, India. C/N and POC/Chl-a and isotopic composition of C and N indicated in situ production is the major source of POM during the dry (33 ± 69 m 3 s −1 ) and moderate discharge (2580 ± 3034 m 3 s −1 ) periods. The δ 13 C and δ 15 N POM were close to that of sediment organic carbon (− 24.0 ± 1 and 1.0 ± 2‰ respectively) during the peak discharge period (16,016 ± 15,346 m 3 s −1 ) indicating that sediment organic matter contributed dominantly to the POM pool as high flow mixes upper layer of sediments. The stable isotope fractionation model clearly indicated that POM during the peak discharge period is contributed by external sources and in situ production during other periods. The Bayesian stable isotope linear mixing model (stable isotope analysis in R, SIAR) suggested that both freshwater and marine algae contributed > 50% of the POM during the dry and moderate discharge periods whereas sediment organic matter during the peak discharge period. Since a significant fraction of the in situ organic matter is fluxed to the coastal ocean, its impact on the coastal ecosystem through microbial loop needs further investigation.

Abstract:A dataset of 224 Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) full resolution satellite images were processed to retrieve the concentration of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in a hypertrophic estuary (Curonian Lagoon, Lithuania and Russia). Images covered a period of 7 months, spanning from the ice melting (March) to the late summer (September) of 7 consecutive years (2005-2011). The aim of the study was to analyse the spatial and temporal variations of CDOM, by focusing on the main regulating factors (riverine discharge, sea-lagoon water exchange, water temperature, chlorophyll a , wind) in a large estuary. The working hypothesis is that CDOM distribution may reveal distinct, site specific seasonal patterns. Our results demonstrated that CDOM concentrations at the whole lagoon level were elevated (1.5-4 m -1 ) and slightly but significantly higher in spring (1.50 m -1 on average) compared to the summer (1.45 m -1 on average). This is due to very different flow of CDOM-rich freshwater from the main lagoon tributary in spring compared to summer. They also highlight macroscopic differences among areas within the lagoon, depending on season, suggesting a complex regulation of CDOM in this system. Significant factors explaining observed differences are the dilution of lagoon water with CDOM-poor brackish water, regeneration of large amounts of dissolved organic matter from sediments and combinations of uptake/release from phytoplankton. CDOM and its variations are understudied due to inherent methodological and analytical difficulties. However, this pool has a demonstrated relevant role in the biogeochemistry of aquatic environments. We speculate that the dissolved organic pool in the Curonian Lagoon has a mainly allochthonous origin in the high discharge period and an autochthonous origin in the summer, algal bloom period. Both positive and negative relationships between CDOM and phytoplankton suggest that pelagic microalgae may act as a source or as a sink of this pool, in particular when inorganic nutrients are limiting.

Optical Absorption Properties of CDOM and Tracing Implication of DOC in the Changjiang Estuary

Abstract:The spectral absorption properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM) and the concentration of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in the Changjiang Estuary from Luchaogang Dock to Shengsi Islands was studied during winter of 2009.The distribution of absorption coefficient α(355) and spectral slope of CDOM were analyzed and the source character and relationship between CDOM and DOC were discussed.Over a salinity range of 18.96~28.00,α(355) ranged from 0.2689~1.183 1 m-1,while the average value was 0.824 9 m-1,lower than values in the wet season,also the other estuaries of China and abroad,which may be attributed to the low degree of vegetative cover in the Changjiang drainage basin and low river flow in winter.The river discharge has significantly influenced on the CDOM distribution in the estuary.The spectral slopes varied from 0.011 3 to 0.017 4 nm-1,and the average value was 0.015 3 nm-1,a little lower comparing with that in the wet season.The inverse relationship between DOC and salinity(R2=0.882) showed the dissolved organic matter(DOM) were primarily terrestrial.And the relationship between CDOM and DOC(CDOMα(355)=0.371DOC+1.012(R2=0.48)) showed that CDOM was a promising tracer for the land source DOC,but the stable inverse model need further study.
Fluorescence Characteristics of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in the Eastern Indian Ocean: A Case Study of Three Subregions

Abstract:Comprising one of the major carbon pools on Earth, marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an essential role in global carbon dynamics. The objective of this study was to better characterize DOM in the eastern Indian Ocean. To better understand the underlying mechanisms, seawater samples were collected in October and November of 2020 from sampling stations in three subregions: the mouth of the Bay of Bengal, Southern Sri Lanka, and Western Sumatra. We calculated and evaluated different hydrological parameters and organic carbon concentrations. In addition, we used excitation emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to analyze the natural water samples directly. Parameters associated with chromophoric DOM did not behave conservatively in the study areas as a result of biogeochemical processes. We further evaluated the sources and processing of DOM in the eastern Indian Ocean by determining four fluorescence indices (the fluorescence index, the biological index, the humification index, and the freshness index β / α). Based on EEM-PARAFAC, we identified six components (five fluorophores) using the peak picking technique. Commonly occurring fluorophores were present within the sample set: peak A (humic-like), peak B (protein-like), peak C (humic-like), and peak T (tryptophan-like). The fluorescence intensity levels of the protein-like components (peaks B and T) were highest in the surface ocean and decreased with depth. In contrast, the ratio of the two humic-like components (peaks A and C) remained in a relatively narrow range in the bathypelagic layer compared to the surface layer, which indicates a relatively constant composition of humic-like fluorophores in the deep layer.

Abstract:Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a major optically active component of DOM in estuaries that plays a significant part in maintaining the ecosystem sustainability of mangrove forests via affecting nutrient and micronutrient ((micro)nutrient) biogeochemical processes and pathways. This study was conducted in Hainan Dongzhai Harbor to better understand the sources, composition, and behaviors of CDOM in a tropical mangrove estuary. Water samples were collected from the upper fluvial mangrove zones to the lower marine endmember along the estuarine salinity gradient and analyzed by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). DOC, TDN, TDSi, Mn, Ba, and optical characteristics, i.e., a254, SUVA, HIX, and the abundance of humic-like CDOM, are negatively correlated with salinity. Terrestrial/anthropogenic inputs, riverine runoff, and mangrove porewater exchange are sources of (micro)nutrients and aromatic CDOM into the estuary. In contrast, pH, DO, TDP, SR, BIX, and tryptophan-like CDOM are positively correlated with salinity. This indicates saltwater dilution, tidal mixing, photo-oxidation, and microbial degradation processes promote the enrichment of low MW autochthonous CDOM and TDP, together with the removal of humic-like substances and other (micro)nutrients in the lower estuary. Overall, these findings have important implications for biogeochemical cycling processes driven by CDOM composition and sources in mangrove estuaries.

Abstract:The chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, an indicator of biomass that is a conduit for fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide, is analyzed using Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) 4-km eight-day resolution data along the west coast of India. A peak of Chl-a blooms during the southwest monsoon (SWM) along the west coast of India and during northeast monsoon (NEM) in northern regions is observed. The blooms start as early as the end of April in southern regions and spread northward. The Fourier transformation and wavelet analysis explicitly reveals the annual and seasonal variability of these blooms and aids in grouping the regions into three zones. The blooms are strong in the southern regions and occur during SWM, whereas in the northern regions, they occur during SWM as well as NEM. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and Niño3.4 is negatively correlated with Chl-a concentration in southern regions only during a few months. Similarly, only for a few months do the northern regions show negative correlations between Niño3.4 and Chl-a concentration. The Chl-a blooms are positively correlated with concurrent Ekman mass transport and precipitation and with a lag of four to seven steps of eight-day cycles in southern regions, whereas the northern regions are positively correlated with concurrent precipitation only. The time of onset and end of blooms and the time span for their northward spread during SWM and southward spread during NEM vary from year to year. The different onset and end times of blooms and varying periods of blooms are vital for policy decisions on regulating fishing activity and establishing a ban period along the west coast of India for sustainable utilization of fishery resources.

Abstract:The Bangladesh-Sundarbans is the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) articulated by UNESCO, is under different anthropogenic stress. The present study focused on the status of estuarine biogeochemistry of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of the Bangladesh–Sundarbans using different optical methods. Four fluorophores: Peak A (230-265/408-488 nm), Peak M (290/414 nm), Peak C (365/488 nm), and Peak W (320/410 nm), and three fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) components (two humic-like, one detergent-like) were identified in the Sundarban mangrove Rivers by Excitation-Emission Matrix (EEM) and Parallel Factor (PARAFAC) analyses. Among the three components, the terrestrial-derived humic-like Component had a high intensity in five samples among six in the Bangladesh-Sundarbans. The total fluorescent intensity and calculated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were maximum in Harbaria and minimum in Kotka and Dublar char, respectively. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) identified protein-like component besides humic-like DOM. The optical indices described that natural fDOM components were from terrestrial sources, were matured, and autochthonous fDOM production was low. The DOM components were relatively lower in molecular size and aromaticity in Harbaria. However, water samples in Harbaria contained organometallic compounds that had much absorbance at 254 nm wavelength. DOM components had low energy and more π-conjugated molecules in structure in the Dublar char and Kotka. Components in Dublar char had comparatively higher molecular size and weight than other sampling stations. The Harbaria and Mongla port contained more hydrophobic and less polar substances than other stations. This study will firmly add diversified notions to future research regarding mangrove forest.

Abstract:Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle and energy flow of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, systematic and comprehensive understanding of CDOM dynamics is critically important for aquatic ecosystem management. CDOM spans multiple study fields, including analytical chemistry, biogeochemistry, water color remote sensing, and global environmental change. Here, we thoroughly summarize the progresses of recent studies focusing on the characterization, distribution, sources, composition, and fate of CDOM in inland waters. Characterization methods, remote sensing estimation, and biogeochemistry cycle processes were the hotspots of CDOM studies. Specifically, optical, isotope, and mass spectrometric techniques have been widely used to characterize CDOM abundance, composition, and sources. Remote sensing is an effective tool to map CDOM distribution with high temporal and spatial resolutions. CDOM dynamics are mainly determined by watershed-related processes, including rainfall discharge, groundwater, wastewater discharges/effluents, and biogeochemical cycling occurring in soil and water bodies. We highlight the underlying mechanisms of the photochemical degradation and microbial decomposition of CDOM, and emphasize that photochemical and microbial processes of CDOM in inland waters accelerate nutrient cycling and regeneration in the water column and also exacerbate global warming by releasing greenhouse gases. Future study directions to improve the understanding of CDOM dynamics in inland waters are proposed. This review provides an interdisciplinary view and new insights on CDOM dynamics in inland waters.

Abstract:Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) in the Brahmaputra River water was characterized using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) model. EEM and PARAFAC model identified five fluorophores (Peak A, C, M, T, Tuv) and four fDOM components (two humic-, tryptophan-, and tyrosine-like) in the Brahmaputra River water. DOC varied between 0.8 and 3.9 mg/L and along with the intensities of the fDOM components showed higher concentration in the pre-monsoon and monsoon than post-monsoon. Higher biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) confirmed the presence of a high amount of organic pollutants in the Brahmaputra River of Bangladesh. Cations and anions concentrations were comparatively lower in the monsoon and pre-monsoon compared to post-monsoon. Mg2+, Na+, and HCO3− ions were predominant; catchments were carbonate mineral-dominated; and the abundance of Na+ and SO42− ions described the presence of uncommon dissolution in the Brahmaputra River. Optical indices described that fDOM components were less aromatic, had low molecular size and weight, terrestrial and biological derived, and were largely affected by microbial decomposition. The Brahmaputra River water was in the higher microbial risk at the pre-monsoon and monsoon than the post-monsoon of the year. Entropy and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods based water quality index (WQI) was developed using PARAFAC components matrix of DOM. Newly derived WQI showed high seasonal variability of water quality in the Brahmaputra River due to the changes in local hydro-climate.

Abstract:We applied stable carbon isotopes, ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices spectroscopy (EEMs), Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to investigate the chemical composition and sources of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in both the water column and pore water in Xiangshan Bay, a representative semi-enclosed and eutrophic bay in Zhejiang Province, China. One protein-like fluorescent component (C1) and two humic-like fluorescent components (C2 and C3) were identified by PARAFAC modeling. The concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the relative intensities of C2, C3, and black carbon-like compounds are all negatively correlated with salinity, indicating that there is a dilution effect of terrestrial signals by seawater in Xiangshan Bay. The differences in light penetration ability of Xiangshan Bay cause different degrees of photo-degradation, which may play an important role in the transformation of organic matter in Xiangshan Bay. The weak correlation between the C1 fluorescent component and salinity indicates that autochthonous sources cannot dominate the protein-like FDOM in the Xiangshan Bay drainage area. Multiple sources (such as anthropogenic inputs and release of pore water) also affect the distribution of the protein-like fluorescent component under eutrophication conditions. The relative proportion of the protein-like fluorescent component in Xiangshan Bay is on a medium level in China and anthropogenic inputs may be a significant source of DOM in coastal bays.

Abstract:Compositions and concentrations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have been determined in the Bohai Sea (BS) and the Yellow Sea (YS) in the summer and autumn in 2013 by excitation and emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMs) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The PARAFAC model identified three humic-like components (C1, C2, and C3) and one protein-like component (C4). CDOM exhibited higher fluorescence intensities in the coastal areas in both the summer and autumn. However, its distribution patterns were different in the two seasons. Based on spatial and seasonal distributions of four components, as well as correlations with salinity, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), the following assignments were made. The C1, C2, and C3 components were mainly dominated by terrestrial inputs and influenced by the primary productivity of phytoplankton in the summer as well. C4 was assigned to terrestrial and autochthonous origins and most likely represented a biologically labile component. Terrestrial inputs were the dominant source of CDOM in the BS and YS. The humification index (HIX) and biological index (BIX) suggested that CDOM in the BS was more stable than that in the YS, which had an increase in autochthonous production, and in the summer, CDOM was less stable with a higher CDOM autochthonous production compared with that in the autumn.
