Abstract:Applying organic fertilizers has been well documented to facilitate the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil ecosystems. However, the role of soil fauna in this process has been seldom addressed, which hampers our ability to predict the fate of and to manage the spread of ARGs. Here, using high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), we examined the effect of long-term (5-, 8-, and 10-year) fertilization treatments (control, inorganic fertilizers, and mixed fertilizers) on the transfer of ARGs between soil, nematodes, and earthworms. We found distinct fates for ARGs in the nematodes and earthworms, with the former having higher enriched levels of ARGs than the latter. Fertilization impacted the number and abundance of ARGs in soil, and fertilization duration altered the composition of ARGs. Shared ARGs among soil, nematodes, and earthworm guts supported by a fast expectation-maximization microbial source tracking analysis demonstrated the trophic transfer potential of ARGs through this short soil food chain. The transfer of ARGs was reduced by fertilization duration, which was mainly ascribed to the reduction of ARGs in the earthworm gut microbiota. This study identified the transfer of ARGs in the soil-nematode-earthworm food chain as a potential mechanism for a wider dissemination of ARGs in the soil ecosystem.

Abstract:The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have become a serious issue in global agricultural production. However, understanding how these ARGs spread across different spatial scales, especially when exposed to both pesticides and antibiotics, has remained a challenge. Here, metagenomic assembly and binning methodologies were used to determine the spread pathway of ARGs in the soil-lettuce system under individual and combined exposure of fungicides (carbendazim and pyraclostrobin) and antibiotics (chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin). These agrochemicals not only facilitated the spread of ARGs from soil to lettuce but also significantly elevated the risk of developing multi-antibiotic resistance among bacteria, especially to some antibiotic types (i.e. sulfonamide, aminoglycoside, quinolone, and tetracycline). ARGs could be migrated through distinct pathways, including both vertical and horizontal gene transfer, with plasmids playing a crucial role in facilitating the horizontal gene transfer. These transfer pathways have enabled key pathogenic bacteria belonging to the genera Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Pantoea to acquire resistance and remain recalcitrant, posing the potential risk to crop health and food safety. In summary, our findings highlighted that fungicide and antibiotic could drive upward migration of ARGs in the soil-lettuce system and reduced the quality safety of agricultural products.
Fungicides Enhanced the Abundance of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Greenhouse Soil.

Abstract:Long-term substantial application of fungicides in greenhouse cultivation led to residual pollution in soils and then altered soil microbial community. However, it is unclear whether residual fungicides could affect the diversity and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in greenhouse soils. Here, the dissipation of fungicides and its impact on the abundance of ARGs were determined using shotgun metagenomic sequencing in the greenhouse and mountain soils under laboratory conditions. Our results showed the greenhouse soils harbored more diverse and abundant ARGs than the mountain soils. The application of carbendazim, azoxystrobin, and chlorothalonil could increase the abundance of total ARGs in the greenhouse soils, especially for those dominant ARG subtypes including sul2, sul1, aadA, tet(L), tetA(G), and tetX2. The abundant ARGs were significantly correlated with mobile genetic elements (MGEs, e.g. intI1and R485) in the greenhouse soils but no significant relationship in the mountain soils. Meanwhile, the co-occurrence patterns of ARGs and MGEs, e.g., sul2 and R485, sul1 and transposase, were further verified via the genetic arrangement of genes on the metagenome-assembled contigs in the greenhouse soils. Additionally, host tracking analysis indicated that ARGs were mainly carried by enterobacteria in the greenhouse soils but actinomyces in the mountain soils. These findings confirmed that some fungicides might serve as the co-selectors of ARGs and elevated their abundance via MGEs-mediated horizontal gene transfer in the greenhouse soils.

Abstract:This work investigated the responses of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the soil microbial community in a paddy-upland rotation system to mineral fertilizer (NPK) and different application dosages of manure combined with NPK. The occurrence of five tetracycline ARGs (tetA, tetB, tetC, tetG and tetW), two sulfonamide ARGs (sul1 and sul2) and one genetic element (Intl1) was quantified. NPK application showed only slight or no impact on soil ARGs abundances compared with the control without fertilizer. Soil ARGs abundances could be increased by manure-NPK application but was related to manure dosage (2250-9000 kg ha(-1)). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the soil ARG profile of the treatment with 9000 kg ha(-1) manure separated clearly from the other treatments; the ARGs that contributed most to the discrimination of this treatment were tetA, tetG, tetW, sul1, sul2 and Intl1. Community level physiological profile (CLPP) analysis showed that increasing manure dosage from 4500 kg ha(-1) to 9000 kg ha(-1) induced a sharp increase in almost all of the detected ARGs but would not change the microbial community at large. However, 9000 kg ha(-1) manure application produced a decline in soil microbial activity. Determination of antibiotics and heavy metals in soils suggested that the observed bloom of soil ARGs might associate closely with the accumulation of copper and zinc in soil. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Organic fertilization is a major driver potentiating soil antibiotic resistance in farmland. However, it remains unclear how bacterial antibiotic resistance evolves in fertilized soils and even spreads to crops. Compared with no fertilizer and commercial fertilizer treatments, organic fertilizers markedly increased the abundance of soil antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) but the relatively weaker transfer of resistance genes from soil to crops. The introduction of organic fertilizers enriches the soil with nutrients, driving indigenous microorganisms towards a K-strategy. The pH, EC, and nutrients as key drivers influenced the ARGs abundance. The neutral (pH 7.2), low salt (TDS 1.4 %) and mesotrophic (carbon content 3.54 g/L) habitats similar to the soil environment conditioned by organic fertilizers. These environmental conditions clearly prolonged the persistence of resistant plasmids, and facilitated their dissemination to massive conjugators soil microbiome but not to plant endophytes. This suggested that organic fertilizers inhibited the spread of ARGs to crops. Moreover, the composition of conjugators showed differential selection of resistant plasmids by endophytes under these conditions. This study sheds light on the evolution and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in farmlands and can aid in the development of antimicrobial resistance control strategies in agriculture.

Abstract:Spread of antibiotic resistance or the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in pathogens is a globally recognized threat to human health. Numerous studies have shown that application of organic fertilizers may increase the risk of ARGs, however, the risk of resistance genes associated with biofertilizers is largely unknown. To investigate whether biofertilizer application introduces ARGs to the soil, we used high-throughput quantitative polymerization chain reaction (HT-qPCR) to explore the effect of biofertilizer application over three years on soil ARGs in three orchards with different locations in China. Redundancy analysis showed specific and significant differences in the beta diversity of soil bacteria and fungi between treatments (fertilizer vs. no fertilizer). One-way ANOVA analysis revealed findings of the main driver of the significant difference in microbial community structure between fertilizer and control treatment was the change in soil properties following the application of biofertilizer. A total of 139 ARGs and 27 MGEs (mobile genetic elements), and 46 ARGs and 6 MGEs from 11 major taxa were detected in biofertilizer and soil samples, respectively. Only the samples from Guangxi had significant differences in the detected number of ARGs and MGEs between fertilization and control. Through structural equation modeling (SEM), we found that soil properties indirectly affected ARGs by shaping bacterial diversity, while bacterial abundance directly affected ARGs. Biofertilizer application did not significantly alter the relative abundance of ARGs in soil due to the complexity of the soil environment and competition between exogenous and native microorganisms. This study provided new insights into the spread of the antibiotic resistome of the soil through biofertilizer applications.

Abstract:This study provided an assessment of the environmental fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in a Scottish grassland field repeatedly treated with different organic fertilizers. The impacts of manure, biosolids and municipal food-derived compost on the relative abundances of tetracycline ARGs (tetA, tetB, tetC, tetG and tetW), sulfonamide ARGs (sul1 and sul2) and class 1 integron-integrase gene (IntI1) in soils were investigated, with inorganic fertilizer (NPK) as a comparison. The background soil with a history of low intensity farming showed a higher total relative abundance of tet ARGs over sul ARGs, with tetracycline efflux genes occurring in a higher frequency. In all treatments, the relative abundances of most ARGs detected in soils decreased over time, especially IntI1 and tet ARGs. This general attenuation of soil ARGs is a reflection of changes in the soil microbial community, which is supported by the result that almost all the soils at the end of the experiment had different bacterial communities from the untreated soil at the beginning of the experiment. Multiple applications of organic fertilizers to some extent counteracted the decreasing trend of soil ARGs relative abundances, which resulted in higher ARGs relative abundances in comparison to NPK, either by a lesser decrease of IntI1 and tet ARGs or an increase of sul ARGs. The enhancement of existing soil ARG prevalence by organic fertilizers was strongly dependent on the organic fertilizer type and the particular ARG. Compost contained the lowest relative abundance of inherent ARGs and had the least effect on the soil ARG decrease after application. The relative increase of tet ARGs caused by biosolids was larger than that of sul ARGs, while manure caused the opposite effect. Fertilization practices did not exert effective impacts on the soil bacterial community, although it caused significant changes in the profile of the ARG pool. Organic fertilization may thus accelerate the dissemination of ARGs in soil mainly through horizontal gene transfer (HGT), consistent with the enrichment of IntI1 in organic fertilized soils.

Abstract:The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soils has aroused wide attention. However, the influence of long-term fertilization on the distribution of ARGs in different soil layers and its dominant drivers remain largely unknown. In this study, a total of 203 ARGs were analyzed in greenhouse vegetable soils (0–100 cm from a 13-year field experiment applied with different fertilizers (control, chemical fertilizer, organic manure, and mixed fertilizer). Compared with unfertilized and chemically fertilized soils, manure application significantly increased the abundance and alpha diversity of soil ARGs, where the assembly of ARG communities was strongly driven by stochastic processes. The distribution of ARGs was significantly driven by manure application within 60 cm, while it was insignificantly changed in soil below 60 cm under different fertilization regimes. The inter-correlations of ARGs with mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and microbiota were strengthened in manured soil, indicating manure application posed a higher risk for ARGs diffusion in subsurface soil. Bacteria abundance and MGEs directly influenced ARG abundance and composition, whereas soil depth and manure application indirectly influenced ARG abundance and composition by affecting antibiotics. These results strengthen our understanding of the long-term anthropogenic influence on the vertical distribution of soil ARGs and highlight the ecological risk of ARGs in subsurface soil induced by long-term manure application.

Abstract:Introduction: Microbial contamination in farmlands is usually underestimated and understudied. Different fertilization times and manure origins might introduce and change the microorganism diversity in farmland soils and thus might influence the abundance and persistence of microbial contamination including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), human bacterial pathogens (HBPs), and virulence factor genes (VFGs). Methods: A 0.5-/1.5-year fertilization experiment was performed, and metagenomic sequencing was conducted to quantify microbial contamination. The resistomes of soil samples revealed that ARGs against antibiotics which were extensively used in veterinary medicine as well as clinically critical ARGs (CCARGs) persisted in manure-amended soils. Here the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase bla genes, the high-level mobilized colistin resistance gene mcr, the tigecycline resistance gene tet(X), and the vancomycin resistance gene van, all of which can circumvent the defense line of these "last-resort" antibiotics were selected to investigate CCARG pollution in farm environments. Results: A total of 254 potential HBPs and 2106 VFGs were detected in soil samples. Overall, our results revealed that (1) farmland soils could serve as a reservoir of some important bla, mcr, tet(X), and van gene variants, (2) the diversity and relative abundance of HBPs and VFGs increased significantly with incremental fertilization times and were discrepant among different manureamended soils, and (3) most CCARGs and VFGs coexisted in HBPs. Disscusion: The results of this study suggested a biological risk of manure in spreading antimicrobial resistance and pathogenicity.

Abstract:Excessive use of antibiotics has caused the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the soil environment, posing a great challenge to environmental safety and public health. However, there is a lack of comprehensive investigations of soil ARGs profiles under different land utilization patterns, and the drivers that affect the distribution of ARGs remain poorly defined. Herein, we investigated the ARGs profiles of eight different land uses and explored the critical factors influencing the distribution of ARGs. The results showed that ARGs abundance in soil of parks, residential areas, farmland, and vegetable cultivation was significantly higher than that in other lands, with an average of 2.08×10 3 copies/g dry soil. The structural equation model demonstrated that the environmental variables were the pivotal drivers that dominated the differences in ARG distribution across land utilization types (path coefficient=0.934), in which the physicochemical factors exhibited the greatest contribution with an explanatory rate of 20.27%, which was markedly higher than that of antibiotics and heavy metal residues. Importantly, these physicochemical factors manipulate the succession of microbial communities by altering the connections between microorganisms, which in turn indirectly affects the distribution of ARGs. Moreover, ARG exposure was strongly correlated with fertilizer application, precipitation, and per capita water resources ( p <0.01). Overall, this study provides a well-rounded understanding of ARG exposure under different land-use patterns, which helps to develop management strategies for curbing ARGs dissemination in the environment.

Abstract:The propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environments has evoked many attentions, however, how to identify their host pathogenic bacteria in situ remains a great challenge. Here we explored the bacterial host distribution and dissemination of a typical ARG, sul1 gene, in agricultural soils through the simultaneous detection of sul1 and its host 16 S rRNA gene by emulsion paired isolation and concatenation PCR (epicPCR). Compared to chemical fertilizer, organic fertilizer (chicken manure) led to a higher prevalence of sul1 gene in the soil, and dominant bacterial hosts of sul1 gene were classified into Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes phyla. Additionally, significant higher diversity of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB), higher rate of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), higher rate of mobile genetic elements (MGE) and higher proportion of pathogens were all observed in the treatment of organic fertilizer. This study alerts potential health risks of manure applications in agricultural soils.

Abstract:Agricultural soils are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which is closely linked to soil microorganisms. Environmental factors and co-existed pollutants may function as promoters or inhibitors for ARG proliferation to influence the agriculture green development. However, research focusing on the interaction of potential environmental drivers and ARGs is still lacking in agricultural soils. Here, we explored the microbial profile in 241 soil samples in Yangtze River Delta, and analyzed the relationship of microbial structures, ARGs, and typical site-specific factors. We found that the abundance of most ARGs was negatively correlated with the ratio of fungi and bacteria (F/B), whereas positively correlated with the ratio of gram-positive and gram-negative microbes (G+/G-). The co-occurrence network revealed significant associations among 18 site-specific factors, including 6 meteorological factors, 5 soil physicochemical properties, 5 co-existed organic pollutants, and 2 co-existed heavy metals. Random forest analysis demonstrated that F/B was mainly influenced by soil organic matters and co-existed polychlorinated biphenyls, while G+/G- was predominately regulated by soil total phosphorus and moisture content, which possibly resulting in their difference relationship with ARG abundance. Besides, the contribution of meteorological factors (>30%) in the explanation for F/B and G+/G- structures was the highest among all the site-specific factors. Together with path analysis showing meteorological factors probably affecting the ARG abundance through direct positive ways or indirect paths via physicochemical properties, microbial structure, and co-existed organic pollutants, we considered meteorological factors as the potential promoters for ARG proliferation. Collectively, these results increase our understanding of agricultural soils as hotspots of ARGs, and highlight the underappreciated role of meteorological factors as potential promoters for soil ARGs, providing reference for us to regulate ARG pollution scientifically to improve the development of green agriculture.

Abstract:Bacterial communities in soil and rhizosphere maintain a large collection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, few of these ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) are well-characterized under traditional farming practices. Here we compared the ARG profiles of maize rhizosphere and their bulk soils using metagenomic analysis to identify the ARG dissemination and explored the potential impact of chemical fertilization on ARB. Results showed a relatively lower abundance but higher diversity of ARGs under fertilization than straw-return. Moreover, the abundance and diversity of MGEs were significantly promoted by chemical fertilizer inputs in the rhizosphere compared to bulk soil. Machine learning and bipartite networks identified three bacterial genera (Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Streptomyces) as biomarkers for ARG accumulation. Thus we cultured 509 isolates belonging to these three genera from the rhizosphere and tested their antimicrobial susceptibility, and found that multi-resistance was frequently observed among Pseudomonas isolates. Assembly-based tracking explained that ARGs and four class I integrons (LR134330, LS998783, CP065848, LT883143) were co-occurred among contigs from Pseudomonas sp. Chemical fertilizers may shape the resistomes of maize rhizosphere, highlighting that rhizosphere carried multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas isolates, which may pose a risk to animal and human health. This study adds knowledge of long-term chemical fertilization on ARG dissemination in farmland systems and provides information for decision-making in agricultural production and monitoring.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal(loid) resistance genes (MRGs) coexist in organic fertilized agroecosystems based on their correlations in abundance, yet evidence for the genetic linkage of ARG-MRGs co-selected by organic fertilization remains elusive. Here, an analysis of 511 global agricultural soil metagenomes reveals that organic fertilization correlates with a threefold increase in the number of diverse types of ARG-MRG-carrying contigs (AMCCs) in the microbiome (63 types) compared to non-organic fertilized soils (22 types). Metatranscriptomic data indicates increased expression of AMCCs under higher arsenic stress, with co-regulation of the ARG-MRG pairs. Organic fertilization heightens the coexistence of ARG-MRG in genomic elements through impacting soil properties and ARG and MRG abundances. Accordingly, a comprehensive global map was constructed to delineate the distribution of coexistent ARG-MRGs with virulence factors and mobile genes in metagenome-assembled genomes from agricultural lands. The map unveils a heightened relative abundance and potential pathogenicity risks (range of 4-6) for the spread of coexistent ARG-MRGs in Central North America, Eastern Europe, Western Asia, and Northeast China compared to other regions, which acquire a risk range of 1-3. Our findings highlight that organic fertilization co-selects genetically linked ARGs and MRGs in the global soil microbiome, and underscore the need to mitigate the spread of these co-resistant genes to safeguard public health.

Abstract:Animal manure fertilization facilitates the proliferation and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil, posing high risks to humans and ecosystem health. Although studies suggest that soil types could shape the ARG profiles in greenhouse soil, there is still a lack of comparative studies on the fate of ARGs in different types of manured soils under field trials. Thus, a metagenomic approach was used to decipher the fate of ARGs in 12-year long-term fertilized (inorganic fertilizer, compost manure and a mix of them) acidic, near-neutral and alkaline soils. A total of 408 unique ARG subtypes with multidrug, glycopeptide, beta-lactam and aminoglycoside resistance genes were identified as the most universal ARG types in all soil samples. Genes conferred to beta-lactam was the predominant ARG type in all the manure-amended soils. Genomic and statistical analyses showed that manure application caused the enrichment of 98 and 91 ARG subtypes in acidic and near-neutral soils, respectively, and 8 ARG subtypes in alkaline soil. The abundances of Proteobacteria (acidic and near-neutral soils) and Actinobacteria (alkaline soil), which are the potential hosts of ARGs, were clearly increased in manured soils. Random forest modelling and Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the soil properties (pH and bio-available Zn) and mobile genetic elements had considerable impacts on the transmission of ARGs. A structural equation model further indicated that soil types shaped the ARG profiles by significantly (P < 0.01) influencing the soil properties, bacterial abundance and bacterial diversity, where bacterial abundance was the major factor influencing the ARG profiles. This study systematically explored the mechanisms shaping the ARG profiles of long-term manured soils, and this information could support strategies to manage the dissemination of ARGs in different soil types.

Abstract:The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soils has received extensive attention regarding its impacts on environmental, animal, and human systems under One Health. However, the health risks of soil ARGs and microbial determinants of soil resistomes remain poorly understood. Here, a nationwide metagenomic investigation of ARGs in cropland and forest soils in China was conducted. The findings indicated that the abundance and richness of high-risk (i.e., mobilizable, pathogen-carriable and clinically relevant) ARGs in cropland soils were 25.7 times and 8.4 times higher, respectively, compared to those identified in forest soils, suggesting the contribution of agricultural practices to the elevated risk level of soil resistomes. The biosynthetic potential of antibacterials best explained the total ARG abundance ( Mantel's r = 0.52, p < 0.001) when compared with environmental variables and anthropogenic disturbance. Both microbial producers' self-resistance and antagonistic interactions contributed to the ARG abundance, of which self-resistance ARGs account for 14.1 %− 35.1 % in abundance. With the increased biosynthetic potential of antibacterials, the antagonistic interactions within the microbial community were greatly enhanced, leading to a significant increase in ARG abundance. Overall, these findings advance our understanding of the emergence and dissemination of soil ARGs and provide critical implications for the risk control of soil resistomes.

Abstract:Compost-based organic fertilizers made from animal manures may contain high levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the factors affecting the abundance and profile of ARGs in organic fertilizers remain unclear. We conducted a national-wide survey in China to investigate the effect of material type and composting process on ARG abundance in commercial organic fertilizers and quantified the contributions of bacterial composition and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) to the structuring of ARGs, using quantitative PCR and Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The tetracycline, sulfonamide, aminoglycoside and macrolide resistance genes were present at high levels in all organic fertilizers. Seven ARGs that confer resistance to clinically important antibiotics, including three β-lactam resistance genes, three quinolone resistance genes and the colistin resistance gene mcr-1, were detected in 8 - 50% the compost samples, whereas the vancomycin resistance gene vanC was not detected. Raw material type had a significant (p < 0.001) effect on the ARG abundance, with composts made from animal feces except some cattle feces generally having higher loads of ARGs than those from non-animal raw materials. Composting process type showed no significant (p > 0.05) effect on ARG abundance in the organic fertilizers. MGEs exerted a greater influence on ARG composition than bacterial community, suggesting a strong mobility of ARGs in the organic fertilizers. Our study highlights the need to manage the risk of ARG dissemination from agricultural wastes.

Abstract:Farmland application of composted manure is associated with a risk of dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soils. However, the impact of soil type on the temporal dynamics of ARGs in agricultural soil remains largely unclear. The aims of this study were to study the persistence of composted manure-derived ARGs in six soil types representative for Chinese agriculture and to explore the underlying environmental drivers of soil ARG profiles in a controlled greenhouse experiment. Temporal dynamics of manure-derived ARGs was strongly affected by soil type. High persistence of fertilizer-derived ARGs was evident in red soil, yellow soil and sierozem soil, while a rapid decrease to near pre-fertilization levels (low persistence) was observed in yellow-brown soil, black soil and brown earth soil. The distribution of ARGs was linked to soil properties such as soil texture, pH and concentrations of heavy metals. More complex co-occurrence networks of ARGs and bacteria in red soil, yellow soil, and sierozem soil suggested a higher dissemination potential, which was consistent with the significantly increased abundance of MGEs in these three types of soils. Our findings highlight the necessity for developing tailored fertilization strategies for different soil types to mitigate environmental dissemination of ARGs.

Abstract:As an important reservoir of intrinsic antimicrobial resistance, soil is subjected to increasing anthropogenic activities that creates sustained selection pressure for the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), thus constituting an important environmental dissemination pathway to human exposure. This study investigated the levels and spatial distributions of three classes of ARGs in relation to a range of co-occurring chemical mixtures and soil properties at a regional scale of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. The selected eight ARGs were all detected in 241 agricultural soil samples with relative abundances ranging from 1.01 × 10−7 to 2.31 × 10−1 normalized to the 16S rRNA gene. The sulII and tetG were the dominant ARGs with a mean relative abundance of 6.67 × 10−3 and 5.25 × 10−3, respectively. The ARGs were mainly present in agricultural soils alongside Taihu Lake and Shanghai municipality, the most agriculturally and economically vibrant area of the YRD region. Antibiotics, rather than other co-occurring pollutants and soil properties, remain to be the dominant correlate to the ARGs, suggesting their co-introduction into the soils via irrigation and manure application or the sustained selection pressure of antibiotics from these sources for the proliferation of ARGs in the soils. While the current dataset provided useful information to assess the ARGs pollution for mitigation, future studies are warranted to reveal the complete picture on the potential transfer of antimicrobial resistance from soil to agricultural produces to human consumption and associated health implications.
