Abstract:Background: Intercultural communication has become increasingly important in nursing due to the cross-border mobility of patients, health professionals and students. Development of cultural competence continues to be a challenge, particularly among professionals such as educators or healthcare providers who work in professions requiring communication across cultural boundaries. Despite challenges in nursing education related to cultural diversity, competence in intercultural communication has been proven to empower students and to help them grow professionally. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe clinical mentors' experiences of their intercultural communication competence in mentoring culturally and linguistically diverse nursing students during completion of their clinical practice. Design: Qualitative study design. Participants: The participants were 12 nurses who had previously mentored at least two culturally and linguistically diverse nursing students. Methods: Data were collected during spring 2016 using semi-structured interviews of 12 mentors working in specialized nursing care at one hospital located in central Finland. Data were analyzed using deductive-inductive content analysis. The main concepts of the Integrated Model of Intercultural Communication Competence were used during the semi-structured theme interviews and during analysis. These concepts include empathy, motivation, global attitude, intercultural experience and interaction involvement. Results: Mentors stated that empathy motivates them in the development of intercultural communication. Mentors experienced a lack of resources and support from their superiors, which caused psychological and ethical strain and reduced mentors' motivation. Mentors openly admitted that they had experienced fear towards unknown cultures, but that this fear was reduced through positive mentoring experiences and cultural encounters. Conclusions: Continuous education on intercultural communication competence could succeed to further develop clinical mentors' mentoring expertise, which could have the potential to greatly benefit students, patients and staff. Such education could be designed, implemented and measured for its effect in collaboration between health care organizations and higher educational institutions.
Improving student supervision in a Norwegian intensive care unit: a qualitative study

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to investigate intensive and critical care nurses' experiences of an empowerment program in the context of their role as student supervisors. Multistage focus group interviews were carried out and qualitative content analysis was performed in several steps. The overall results highlighted the need for strategies aimed at ensuring quality. The emerging themes were time, leadership and shared responsibility. Enough time promoted motivation, learning and reflection. Obligations to the student limited their leisure time and family life, and imposed some limitations during working hours. Leadership was perceived as crucial and leaders should act as strategic managers of development. The balance between "shared responsibility" and one supervisor in charge of one student was highlighted. There is a need to strengthen and improve the system of student supervision. There is a need to allocate time for learning and reflection. Who is responsible for the students must be clearly defined in the hospital, the university and in the intensive care unit, and it must be communicated.

Abstract:Worldwide, the healthcare system stresses a severe deficit of nurses because of elevated levels of work-induced stress, burnout and turnover rates, as well as the ageing of the nursing workforce. The diminishing number of nursing students opting for a career in nursing older people has exacerbated this shortage. A determining factor in the choice of a career within the field of residential care for nursing students is educational institutions offering students learning opportunities with positive learning experiences. Therefore, educational institutions must develop programmes that employ student active learning methods during clinical periods. Although much focus has been given to the development of new educational programs, insufficient consideration has been given to the value of peer mentoring and students' interactions during the clinical placement at nursing homes. The aim of the present study is to explore first-year nursing students' perceptions and experiences with peer mentoring as an educational model during their inspiration practice week at nursing home.

Examining Mentor Perception of Competence in an Academic Peer Mentoring Program

Abstract:Introduction: Peer mentoring programs can be a valuable support mechanism for new faculty transitioning from clinical practice to academia. Mentors play a crucial role in this process. This study described mentors' perceived competence in 21 areas of the mentor role and their experiences as mentors following the first year of a structured peer mentoring program. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods approach, using the Mentoring Competency Assessment-21 alongside open-ended questions. These instruments were electronically administered to a convenience sample consisting of eight mentors with varying experience ranging from 2 to 16 years in the nursing program at a mid-sized university, following an intentional first-year peer mentoring program. Results: The highest-performing items were "Establishing a relationship based on trust" (M 6.50, SD 0.53), "Considering how personal and professional differences may impact expectations" (M 6.25, 0.83), and "Acknowledging your mentee's professional contributions" (M 6.13, SD 0.99). The lowest scores were focused on estimating scientific knowledge and scholarly productivity. Responses to the Mentoring Competency Assessment-21 indicated that mentors felt at least moderately competent in the various aspects of the faculty mentor role. Mentors valued the professional development and supporting materials provided by the development team. An identified area for improvement was the support provided to assist the mentees' scholarly development. Discussion: This study underscores the importance of supportive materials, such as handbooks and regular communication, in fostering mentor competence and facilitating successful nursing faculty peer mentoring programs. Future research implications include assessment of mentor competence by mentees and long-term follow-up of program outcomes.
Healthcare professionals' experiences of required competencies in mentoring of interprofessional students in clinical practice: A systematic review of qualitative studies

Abstract:Aim: To synthesize evidence on healthcare professionals' experiences of competencies in mentoring undergraduate healthcare, social care and medical students during their interprofessional clinical practice. Design: This review was conducted by the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence. Methods: Studies were included if they were based on the phenomenon of interest and used qualitative or mixed methods (qualitative share). The included studies were critically appraised using the standardized JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist. Qualitative research findings were extracted and synthesized using the meta-aggregation approach. Data sources: Five databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Medic and ProQuest) were systematically searched from each database's inception on 28 June 2023. Results: A total of 5164 studies were initially screened, and 25 were identified for inclusion in this review. Three synthesized findings were identified: competencies related to (1) preparing for and developing interprofessional clinical practice, (2) supporting the learning process in interprofessional clinical practice and (3) creating an interprofessional mentor identity. Conclusion: Although competent mentors are essential to implementing and developing interprofessional clinical practice, some mentors find interprofessional mentoring challenging. High-quality interprofessional mentoring requires specific competence that differs from profession-specific and individual mentoring. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: To ensure that interprofessional clinical practice is of high quality and strengthens students' professional and interprofessional growth, special attention should be given to mentors' interprofessional mentoring competence, and a range of opportunities and organizational structures should be provided for competence development. Impact: This systematic review provides insights into the specific competencies required for interprofessional mentoring. These findings can support healthcare professionals, educators and policymakers in developing interprofessional clinical practice and mentoring competence. Abstract:Topic: Various approaches facilitate mentoring for critical care nurses. Clinical relevance: Mentoring is an important strategy to help recruit, retain, and develop nurses with critical care expertise. Mentoring benefits nurses at all career stages, from novice to expert. Effective mentoring programs benefit not only mentors and mentees but also organizations and patients by ensuring adequate numbers of nurses with critical care knowledge and skills. Purpose: Mentoring programs require careful planning to ensure that the objectives of the program align with the needs of the target audience, and that adequate resources are available to support the mentor-mentee relationship. This article identifies opportunities for mentoring in critical care nursing and provides recommendations from the literature for developing an effective program. Content covered: Various objectives for mentoring programs are described, including supporting retention, providing clinical development, and planning succession. Program logistics are explored, such as selecting mentors, matching mentors with mentees, setting goals and expectations, and evaluating the program. In addition, the article identifies strategies for overcoming common barriers to mentoring, which include a lack of time and poor access to qualified mentors.

Abstract:Background: Mentorship is a vital part of the nursing profession to improve role transition, job satisfaction, and job retention while facilitating socialization, emotional well-being, and the acquisition of new skills. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of an educational program about mentorship competencies on nurse mentors' performance at Port Said Healthcare Authority hospitals. Methods: A quasi-experimental study design (pre-test and post-test one group) was used to conduct the study at seven Healthcare Authority hospitals in Port Said Governorate, Egypt. The study subjects were consisted of a purposive sample of 30 nurse mentors and 60 intern nursing students. Data were collected using three tools consisted of the Mentor Knowledge Questionnaire, Mentor Competencies Instrument (MCI), and Nurse Mentor Performance Assessment. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 20, Student's t-test was used to measure differences between the pretest and post-test, and Qualitative categorical variables were compared using the chi-square test. A significant level value was considered when the p-value ≤ 0.05, and Cohen's d was used to measure the effect size. Results: the post-test scores of mentorship competencies and performance after implementation of the educational program significantly improved in the studied nurse mentors 56.1 ± 13.2, 60.5 ± 4.9 compared with pre-test scores with 37.1 ± 4.1, 49.7 ± 6.9 (P < 0.001). As determined by Cohen's d test, the effect size of an educational program is quite large on the nurse mentors' performance. Conclusion: The educational program about mentorship competencies was significantly improve mentorship performance of the studied nurse mentors. The study recommended dissemination and generalization of the new and innovative mentorship program to the different stages of nursing education to foster the continued growth and development of nurse mentors and nurse students. Also, recommended developing a valid mentor assessment instrument consisting of and specific to the Egyptian context to assess the Egyptian mentorship model. Abstract:Learning in placement is essential to postgraduate critical care nursing students' education. Assessment of students' competence in placement is important to ensure highly qualified postgraduate critical care nurses. The placement model applied in Norway involves students being assessed by a preceptor in practice and a teacher from the university. The teacher has a more distant role in placement, and the aim of this study was to explore how the teachers experience the assessment of postgraduate critical care nursing students' competence in placement. Additionally, to explore the content of assessment documents used for postgraduate critical care nursing placement education in Norway.

Abstract:Objective Existing research has focused mostly on mentees' experiences of mentoring rather than mentors' experiences. Therefore, this study describes registered nurses' experiences of being a mentor for newly qualified nurses. Design A qualitative interview study based on semistructured individual interviews. Interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Participants and setting A purposive sample of experienced registered nurses (n=21) from healthcare units in northern Sweden and northern Norway. Inclusion criteria were to have been a mentor to at least one newly qualified nurse, hold permanent employment of 75%–100% as a registered nurse and to be able to communicate in Swedish or Norwegian. Results Our study's findings suggest that being a mentor plays a crucial role in establishing safety in complex work environments. The main theme consists of three themes: feeling motivated in being a mentor; continuously developing the learning environment; and navigating obstacles and cultivating support. Conclusion Being a mentor is a complicated role for registered nurses. The mentoring role is beneficial—ie, positive and rewarding—if facilitated sufficiently in the context of a structured organisation. This study brings a more profound understanding of and provides new insights into registered nurses' perspectives and needs regarding being a mentor and the study's findings make an important contribution to the field of nursing regarding the facilitation of mentoring.

Abstract:Aim The aim of the present study was to describe nurse managers' perceptions of the provision of mentoring for newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs) and its contribution to the work environment in a hospital setting. Background Nurse managers are responsible for the work environment and for supporting the staff's professional development, which includes giving NGRNs organizational support during their introduction to the workplace. Mentorship is one common way to provide support, but there is a lack of knowledge about how nurse managers view this support. Design/Method This was a qualitative descriptive study, using a semi‐structured interview guide. Fifteen individual interviews with nurse managers were performed in hospital settings. The interview transcripts were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The COREQ guidelines and checklist were used. Results The results describe the nurse managers' perceptions of the provision of mentoring in three themes: Ensuring and sustaining mentoring for new nurses' needs is a struggle in the harsh reality of healthcare, Identifying mentors who are willing and possess the necessary competence for the assignment and Promoting a secure and attractive workplace by mentoring new nurses. Conclusions Our study confirms that nurse managers are important in the provision of mentoring for NGRNs' learning and professional development. Mentoring has a positive spillover effect on the entire unit as a sustainable approach to securing and improving the work environment. Our study also identifies challenges for nurse managers to structure mentoring provision. Implications for the profession and/or patient care This study highlights the importance of investment in mentoring for the NGRNs' professional development and for patient care. Support is needed from the top level of the organization, but how mentoring should be structured and facilitated needs to be investigated further.

Abstract:As the blueprint of vital activities of most living things on earth, DNA has important status and must be protected perfectly. And in current DNA databases, each sequence is stored with several notes that help to describe that sequence. However, these notes have no contribution to the protection of sequences. In this paper, the authors propose a reversible data hiding method for DNA sequences, which could be used either to embed sequence-related annotations, or to detect and restore tampers. When embedding sequence annotations, the methods works in low embedding rate mode. Only several bits of annotations are embedded. When used for tamper detection and tamper restoration, all possible embedding positions are utilized to assure the maximum restoration capacity.

Abstract:Myogenesis in skeletal muscle is a cascade of developmental events whose initiation involves the MyoD family of transcription factors. Evolutionary analyses of amino acid sequences of this family of transcriptional activators suggest that the vertebrate genes MyoD1, myf-5, Myog (myogenin), and myf-6 were derived by gene duplications from a single ancestral gene. A common genetic origin predicts some functional redundancy between MyoD1 and myf-5 and between Myog and myf-6. Experimental studies have suggested that these pairs of genes can substitute for each other during myogenesis. Separate analyses of the conserved basic helix-loop-helix and nonconserved flanking elements yield similar branching sequences but show evolutionary change in the basic helix-loop-helix region has occurred at a much slower rate.
Dynamics of interaction of RNA polymerase II with nucleosomes. I. Effect of salts

Abstract:Mononucleosomes were labeled with the sulfhydryl‐specific fluorescence probe 1, 5‐IAEDANS (5‐(2‐((iodoacetyl)amino)ethyl)amino‐naphthalene‐1‐sulfonic acid) by attaching the dye to the single cysteine of H3 through a covalent linkage. The enzyme RNA polymerase II (pol II) utilized the native and the reconstituted fluorescent nucleosomes as templates with greatest efficiency when 0.2 M potassium acetate (AcOK) was used as the supporting salt; 0.2 M NaCl was found to be very much inhibitory. Measurement of polarity of the microenvironment of the dye at its binding site in the nucleosome showed the conformation to be more open in the presence of AcOK, compared to that in 0.1 or 0.2 M NaCl. The binding of pol II to the nucleosome resulted in a relatively more compact structure when measured in terms of the polarity of the microenvironment of the dye in various salt‐dependent conformations of the nucleosomes. Time‐resolved fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the probe molecule at its binding site undergoes certain excited‐state processes, and the presence/absence or rate of these excited‐state processes depends on the conformation of nucleosomes, which in turn depends on the type and concentration of the ion present in the medium. Time‐resolved emission spectra showed that binding of nucleosomes by pol II established some new contacts that resulted in inaccessibility of the dye to the bulk solvent, reflecting a more hydrophobic environment for the dye in the steady‐state spectra. Thus, binding or transcription of nucleosomes by pol II did not break open their structure. Rather, some transient internal adjustments within the histone octamer may take place to accommodate the bulky pol II molecule.
Development of a Critical Reflection Mentorship Program to Enhance Critical Thinking Among Novice Nurses

Abstract:Background: The increasing complexity of care and the decrease in overall nursing experience pose a threat to patient safety and clinical outcomes in health care. Within the local environment, a critical need was identified to connect expert bedside nurses with novice nurses to support the development of critical thinking. Method: This article describes the development and pilot evaluation of a critical reflection mentorship program, Beyond the Bedside. The program was developed and deployed in three inpatient units within an adult academic health center. Critical thinking was evaluated using the Nursing Critical Thinking in Clinical Practice Questionnaire (N-CT-4 Practice) pre- and postprogram implementation. Results: Five nurses participated in the pre- and postevaluation, and the N-CT-4 Practice mean scores were significantly higher after program implementation. Conclusion: Education leaders should prioritize programs that support critical thinking among novice nurses, and the Beyond the Bedside program can be adapted for use in other health care settings. MatricS-A novel tool for monitoring professional role development in surgical disciplines

Abstract:Introduction: Mentoring is an effective method for human resource development. Monitoring the process is important for individual mentee/mentor pairs as well as for program directors. Due to individual personality differences of both mentees and mentors and their respective interactions, it is challenging to monitor the individual development process of mentees in a structured manner. This study investigates to what extent a novel instrument, the mentee-based assessment tool for role development of interpersonal competencies in surgical professions (MatricS) can adequately monitor the professional role development process of residents during an established mentoring program. Material and methods: In a prospective longitudinal study, the competence development of 31 mentees in two subsequent cohorts was assessed by a modified role matrix based on Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists. The evaluation focused on three defined roles (D, developer; N, networker; M, multiplicator) at three levels (private, employer-related, national/international) with four stages of development. For validation of mentee self-assessments, the assessments of the respective mentors were recorded alongside. For correlation analyses, Pearson coefficients were calculated, pre-post-comparisons were done by paired t-tests; significance was assumed at p < 0.05, respectively. Results: Mentee self-assessments overall correlated well with the objective mentor assessments (Pearson's r 0.8, p < 0.001). Significant correlations of this magnitude were found for both individual cohorts as well as for all individual roles. The mentees acquired competencies in all roles indicated by significant increases of corresponding MatricS scores. The largest competency gains (mean ± SD) were found in the role D (start: 1.30 ± 0.77, end: 2.13 ± 0.83, p < 0.001). The majority of mentees achieved the prespecified target competency level in >75% of all roles and levels. Conclusion: The role development process during mentoring can be reliably monitored by using MatricS. MatricS scores highly correlate between mentees and mentors, indicating that mentee self-assessments are suitable and sufficient for monitoring. These findings help to lessen the work burden on senior surgeons and thus can help to increase the acceptance of mentoring programs in surgical disciplines.

Abstract:Background: Learning basic mental health care competence is often challenging for the bachelor of science student nurses, and many lack basic mental health care competence to ensure safe and confident mental health care practice. Mental health assessment is an integrated part of this competence. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore and describe in depth how student nurses experience learning and achieving basic mental health competence while on mental health placement with the support of a learning tool. Design: An explorative and descriptive qualitative design was conducted to gain insight on how student nurses experienced learning basic mental health competence when on placement. Setting: A diversity of mental health placement settings in which student nurses were involved with patient care or welfare were approached; general psychiatric wards (n = 2), psychiatric ward for elderly people (n = 1), community mental health in-patient facilities (n = 2) and unconventional placements in the community (n = 9). Unconventional placements are a diversity of non-clinical service contexts. Participants: The participants comprised student nurses in their 3rd and final year while on mental health placement. Potential participants received information from course coordinators, the online learning platform, and from teachers in plenary. Using purposive sampling, 14 student nurses were recruited. Methods: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted online and in person at two campuses of one university in Norway between August 2020 and December 2021. The interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed as described by Braun and Clarke. Results: Students expressed insecurity in a new clinical context. They engaged in new learning situations and realized the diversity of nursing practice. Unconventional placements were described as challenging contexts for learning basic mental health care competence. Conclusions: This qualitative study provided insight into how student nurses experience learning mental health assessment, and gaining relational, communicative, and ethical competence while on placement. Students revealed their insecurities and challenges in learning in a new context. Awareness of clinical learning opportunities on placement when preparing student nurses to learn basic mental health competence may help improve their confidence.

Clinical instructors play a crucial role in this process. Objectives: The aims of this study were a) to describe nursing students' caring behaviours and perceptions of instructor caring, b) to assess sex-related and year of course differences in students' caring behaviours and perceptions of nursing caring, and c) to investigate the association between nursing students' caring and their perception of instructors' caring. Design: A multi-centre, cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Setting: The study involved undergraduate nursing students from four teaching hospitals of a university in Northern Italy. Participants: A total of 316 nursing undergraduate students participated in the study (83.9 % female, 16.1 % male, 23.1 % 1st year, 48.1 % 2nd year, 28.8 % 3rd year). Methods: Participants completed online self-reported surveys assessing caring behaviours, empathy, burnout, and perceptions of instructor caring. Caring behaviours, expressive and instrumental caring, were measured using the Caring Behaviour Inventory (CBI), and perceptions of instructor caring were assessed using the Nursing Students' Perceptions of Instructor Caring (NSPIC) questionnaire. Results: Students' caring behaviours were positively associated with their perceptions of instructor caring, particularly in relation to a supportive learning climate and instructor flexibility. Female students displayed higher scores in expressive caring, while students in their second and third years demonstrated increased instrumental caring behaviours. Responding to Individual Needs was significantly lower in third-years students, compared to first- and second-year ones. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the crucial role of clinical instructors in shaping nursing students' caring attributes. However, the influence of sex on caring behaviours remains unclear, necessitating further investigation. These findings underscore the significance of nurturing caring behaviours in nursing education and offer insights for selecting, training, and supporting clinical instructors, to foster more compassionate and competent nurses.
Developing skills in safe patient handling: mentors' views about their role in supporting student nurses

Abstract:Although great reliance is placed on clinically based mentors to ensure pre-registration student nurses gain the required competencies for safe moving and handling practice, anecdotal evidence derived from discussions with students suggested that little attention was given to this topic during practice placements. This prompted a study to explore mentors' views on their role in teaching and assessing students' moving and handling (M&H) practice and students' perceptions of the relevance of M&H training. This paper reports on mentors' perspectives, drawing on data gained via focus groups with 15 hospital based mentors. The main approach to teaching students about M&H was to focus on the practical aspects of the activity. There was little emphasis on problem solving and discussion or on assessing students' competence. Although challenges were associated with the topic, suggestions were made on how to maximise education for safe M&H. The findings highlight the importance of a joint approach to education for safe M&H between Universities and Trusts. Consistent approaches must be taught in both settings and mentors need to be aware of students' learning needs, taking care to ensure that knowledge underpinning clinical decision making is transparent.
