Abstract:Previous studies found seasonal variations in the incidence of retinal vascular occlusion (RVO), with more occurrence in winter. There is increasing evidence linking vitamin D deficiency and RVO. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between vitamin D levels and RVO. From inception to February 2024, MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were comprehensively searched. Observational studies comparing 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels between adult patients with RVO and non-RVO controls were included. We calculated pooled mean difference (MD) and pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) of our data using a random-effects model and generic inverse variance method. Five studies involving 528 patients (228 patients with RVO and 300 controls were included in the meta-analysis. 25(OH)D was significantly lower in patients with RVO (pooled MD of -9.65 (95%CI -13.72 to -5.59, I2 = 92.2%). Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25(OH)D < 20) was significantly associated with RVO with the pooled OR of 14.52 (95%CI 1.72 to 122.59, I2 = 90.5). There was no difference in 25(OH)D levels between patients with central RVO and branched RVO (pooled MD of -0.94 (95%CI -3.91 to 2.03, I2 = 59.1%). In conclusion, our meta-analysis demonstrates that serum vitamin D levels were lower in patients with RVO than non-RVO controls. Clinicians could consider screening for vitamin D deficiency in patients with RVO. Further studies are warranted to determine the correlation between vitamin D levels and disease severity and the role of vitamin D supplements in these populations.
Emerging role of vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for retinal venous occlusions and need for public health measures for its prevention

Abstract:Purpose: To estimate levels of serum vitamin D in patients of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and compare with age- and sex-matched controls. Methods: A prospective case-control study of 54 patients of RVO and 54 age- and sex-matched attendants of patients presenting to a tertiary care hospital in Delhi was performed. Patients on vitamin D supplementations and RVO due to infective or immunological causes or patients of glaucoma were excluded. Serum vitamin D levels of all the study participants along with relevant blood investigations with history and examination were documented. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as <20 ng/ml. Results: The mean serum vitamin D levels seen in RVO patients and the control group were 14.19 ± 5.23 ng/ml and 19.42 ± 10.27 ng/ml, respectively (P value = 0.001) with an odds ratio of 10.558 (CI = 2.34-47.50), indicating vitamin D deficiency to be strongly correlated with RVO. Maximum patients of RVO (46.3%) were seen during the winter season. The study noted hypertension [odds ratio 20.22 (CI = 5.812-70.347)], dyslipidemia, and anemia [odds ratio 4.107 (CI = 0.62-26.90)] to be the risk factors for RVO as previously proved in the literature. Smoking, diabetes, alcohol intake, and body mass index did not emerge as risk factors for RVO. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with RVO; hence, estimation of serum vitamin D levels should be advised as a part of routine investigations while looking for the cause of RVOs. Public health measures like food fortification with vitamin D micronutrients and public awareness towards increased sunlight exposure in the community are simple, inexpensive measures that can decrease the burden of sight-threatening disease of RVO in the community.

Abstract:BackgroundThe evidence from epidemiological studies concerning the relationship between serum vitamin D concentrations and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is inconsistent. This meta-analysis is aimed at determining the magnitude of the correlation between this common autoimmune disease and vitamin D, an important nutrient known to dampen adaptive immune responses.MethodsThrough multiple search strategies, relevant literature was identified and evaluated for quality before May 16 2015. Data extracted from eligible studies was synthesized to calculate pooled correlation coefficient (r), mean difference (MD) and odds ratio (OR). The Venice criteria were applied to assess the credibility of the evidence for each statistically significant association.ResultsA total of 24 reports involving 3489 patients were selected for analysis. RA patients had lower vitamin D levels than healthy controls (MD:-16.52 nmol/L, 95% confidence intervals [CI]:-18.85 to -14.19 nmol/L). There existed a negative relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) level and disease activity index, e.g. 25OHD vs. Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS28): r = -0.13, 95% CI -0.16 to -0.09; 25OHD vs. C-reactive protein: r = -0.12, 95% CI -0.23 to -0.00. Additionally, latitude-stratified subgroup analysis yielded a relatively stronger negative correlation between 25OHD and DAS28 in low-latitude areas. This inverse relationship also appeared more significant in developing countries than in developed countries. No publication bias was detected.ConclusionRA patients had lower vitamin D values than healthy controls. There was a negative association between serum vitamin D and RA disease activity. However, more strictly controlled studies are needed to validate these findings.

Abstract:Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder, after diabetic retinopathy. Most patients suffering RVO develop some degree of visual loss consequent to retinal complications such as edema and microhemorrhages. Even if some risk factors for RVO have been identified, the clinical outcome of RVO remains highly unpredictable because studies investigating potential prognostic markers for visual improvement are lacking. Cyanocobalamin belongs to the group of B vitamins and plays a role in homocysteine metabolism; however, cyanocobalamin deficiency associates with an increase of some toxic bioproducts involved in endothelial injury and platelet activation independent of homocysteine levels. We retrospectively evaluated the levels of vitamin B12 at diagnosis in 203 patients with RVO, and in a parallel cohort of 120 age- and sex-matched patients without RVO from an internal medicine ward, and correlated them with visual outcome at follow-up (median time 150 days, IQR 30–210). In patients with RVO, vitamin B12 levels at diagnosis were significantly lower than in controls and independently predicted worse clinical outcome at multivariate analysis (OR 3.2; CIs 1.2–8.2; p = 0.015). Our data suggest the opportunity to prospectively evaluate the effect on visual outcome of cyanocobalamin supplementation in RVO patients.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic response of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) to intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) with and without concomitant vitamin D supplementation. Method: Seventy eyes of 68 patients with macular edema associated with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) received three monthly IVB injections. Patients with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) higher than 30 ng/ml were considered as the sufficient group. Cases with serum 25(OH) D levels below 30 ng/ml were randomized into the treatment and control groups. The control group received 50,000 IU of oral vitamin D, weekly for two months. One month after the last IVB injection, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) were measured and compared with the preinjection values. Results: While 43 eyes (61.4%) of 42 patients had BRVO, 27 eyes (38.6%) of 26 patients had CRVO. In BRVO patients, changes of CMT and BCVA were not significantly different between the sufficient, control, and treatment groups ( P = 0.58 and 0.64, respectively). In the CRVO group, CMT reduction in the control group was significantly less than the sufficient and treatment groups ( P = 0.048). In addition, improvement of BCVA in the control group was significantly less ( P = 0.036) than the sufficient and treatment groups. Conclusion: Oral vitamin D supplement therapy may improve anatomical and functional outcomes in patients with CRVO and vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract:The contributory roles of vitamin D in ocular and visual health have long been discussed, with numerous studies pointing to the adverse effects of vitamin D deficiency. In this paper, we provide a systematic review of recent findings on the association between vitamin D and different ocular diseases, including myopia, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), dry eye syndrome (DES), thyroid eye disease (TED), uveitis, retinoblastoma (RB), cataract, and others, from epidemiological, clinical and basic studies, and briefly discuss vitamin D metabolism in the eye. We searched two research databases for articles examining the association between vitamin D deficiency and different ocular diseases. One hundred and sixty-two studies were found. There is evidence on the association between vitamin D and myopia, AMD, DR, and DES. Overall, 17 out of 27 studies reported an association between vitamin D and AMD, while 48 out of 54 studies reported that vitamin D was associated with DR, and 25 out of 27 studies reported an association between vitamin D and DES. However, the available evidence for the association with other ocular diseases, such as glaucoma, TED, and RB, remains limited.

Multimodal Imaging Study of Patients With Vitamin A Deficiency Retinopathy

Abstract:Objectives: To describe multimodal imaging findings of vitamin A deficiency retinopathy. Methods: A retrospective study of patients with serum retinol < 0.3 mg/L. Fundus color photos, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) were reviewed and, when available, electrophysiological tests were analyzed. Results: Forty-five eyes (63.9 ± 15.7 years) were included. Ultra-widefield fundus photography showed drusen-like deposits (53.3%) and macular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) mottling (40%). The deposits were hypoautofluorescent, and a perifoveal hyperautofluorescent ring was present in 8.9%. By SD-OCT, the ellipsoid zone had an irregular appearance (100%) and conical deposits anterior to the RPE (33.3%). Electroretinogram (ERG) (66.7%) showed a decrease in b-wave in the scotopic registers, and microperimetry (4.4%) showed decreased foveal sensitivity. After vitamin A supplementation, SD-OCT and FAF showed resolution of all findings. Forty percent of eyes had restoration of the scotopic registers in ERG and improved macular sensitivity by microperimetry (4.4%). Risk of stroke development following retinal vein occlusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and cerebrovascular disease share common risk factors and may be independently associated; however, the strength and nature of this association remain unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, informed by studies from PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar until January 6, 2024, aimed to clarify this relationship. Eligible studies included cohorts observing stroke incidence in RVO patients for over a year. Pooled effect estimates were calculated using random-effects models, with subgroup analyses evaluating associations between RVO types (central and branch) and stroke subtypes (ischemic and hemorrhagic). Ten cohort studies with a total of 428,650 participants (86,299 RVO patients) were included. Compared to controls, RVO patients exhibited a significantly increased risk of stroke (pooled risk ratio [RR]=1.38, 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI)=1.34-1.41). Subgroup analyses indicated elevated risk for both ischemic (RR=1.37, 95 %CI=1.32-1.42) and hemorrhagic (RR=1.55, 95 %CI=1.08-2.22) strokes in RVO patients. Additionally, both central (RR=1.50, 95 %CI=1.27-1.78) and branch (RR=1.41, 95 %CI=1.32-1.50) RVO were associated with stroke risk. Sensitivity analyses confirmed consistent results across various criteria, and funnel plots indicated no publication bias. RVO significantly increases the risk of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, regardless of RVO type, suggesting a strong independent association between these conditions.

Abstract:Studies have investigated vitamin D levels in patients with vasovagal syncope (VVS) and compared them with healthy controls. Our systematic review showed that patients with VVS have significantly lower levels of vitamin D. Also, VVS occurrence was significantly higher in vitamin D‐deficient patients. Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is the most prevalent type of syncope and its management includes pharmacologic and non‐pharmacologic interventions. Recently, studies have investigated vitamin D levels in VVS patients. In this systematic review and meta‐analysis, we aim to review these studies to find possible associations between vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D levels with VVS. International databases including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase were searched with keywords related to "vasovagal syncope" and "vitamin D." Studies were screened and the data were extracted from them. Random‐effect meta‐analysis was conducted to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for vitamin D levels in comparison to VVS patients and controls. Also, VVS occurrence was measured and the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI were calculated for comparison of vitamin D deficient cases and nondeficient individuals. Six studies were included with 954 cases investigated. Meta‐analysis showed that patients with VVS had significantly lower vitamin D serum levels in comparison to non‐VVS cases (SMD −1.05, 95% CI −1.54 to −0.57, p‐value

Seismic velocity picking by genetic algorithm

Abstract:We use genetic algorithm (GA) of global optimization method for velocity picking in reflection seismic data. Here, we transfer the velocity picking to a combinatorial optimization problem. The local peaks in time-velocity seismic semblance image are ordered in a sequence with time first, then velocity. We define a fitness function that includes the total semblance of picked points and constraints on the number of picked points, interval velocity, and velocity slope. GA can find an individual with the maximum of fitness function and get the picked points to form the best polyline. We have Nankai real seismic data in the experiments. We use sequential method to find the best parameter settings of GA. The picking result by GA is good and close to the human picking result. The result of velocity picking by GA is used for the normal move-out (NMO) correction and stacking. The stacking result shows that the signal is enhanced. This method can improve the seismic data processing and interpretation.

Abstract:Purpose Vitamin D (VD) is a vitamin with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Several studies have shown that VD deficiency is associated with the incidence and severity of dry eye disease (DED) in humans. This meta -analysis compared signs and symptoms in patients with DED before and after VD supplementation. Methods Ten databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Web of science, Ovid, Embase, Scopus, CNKI, CSTJ, Wanfang, Sinomed) and four clinical trials registry websites (ISRCTN, CT, ICTRP, ICH GCP) were searched for studies on the efficacy of VD supplement in patients with DED that were published up to 2023 January. A total of 8 studies with 439 cases were included. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the literature and extracted data to calculate standard mean differences (SMD) for the Schirmer's test (SH test), tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining scores (CFSS, Oxford Scale, 0–5), lid hyperemia, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and visual analogue pain scale (VAS). Results The analysis showed that VD supplementation improved tear production (SMD 1.43, 95% CI 0.81, 2.05, p = 0.000) and tear film stability (SMD 1.19, 95% CI 0.83, 1.55, p = 0.000) and reduced lid hyperemia (SMD −0.71, 95% CI −1.09, −0.32, p = 0.000) and OSDI (SMD −1.10, 95% CI −1.45, −0.74, p = 0.000), which is effective in alleviating the signs and symptoms of DED. Conclusions VD supplementation could be an adjuvant treatment to alleviate the signs and symptoms of dry eye in the future. However, further studies regarding its most appropriate administration and dosage need to be conducted.

Association of Retinal Vein Occlusion With Serum Osmolality and Hydration Status

Abstract:Background and Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum osmolality and hydration status in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 79 patients with RVO and 81 age- and sex-matched peers without ocular disease. Data were collected from patient records and included a comprehensive ophthalmological examination, laboratory data of fasting blood test results, and internal medicine outpatient examination. Complete blood count and levels of fasting glucose, sodium, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, HbA1c, and serum osmolality were evaluated. BUN/creatinine ratios were calculated. Results: Mean serum sodium and serum osmolality levels were 142.53 ± 2.13 and 139.74 ± 2.16 mEq/L and 286.58 ± 4.40 and 280.57 ± 4.39 mOsmol/kg H 2 O in the RVO and control groups, respectively. Serum osmolality and serum sodium levels, and BUN/creatinine ratio were significantly higher in the RVO group than in controls ( P < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: We found that serum osmolality, sodium levels, and the BUN/creatinine ratio increased significantly in the RVO group. Reduced vitamin D levels in diabetic retinopathy: cause or effect?

Abstract:Abstract Aims: Research suggests that vitamin Ddeficiency is associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Our study aimed to understand whether vitamin D deficiency is the cause of DR or whether people with DR have low vitamin D. Methods: Participants with type 2 diabetes were recruited for this prospective observational clinical study and were divided into a diabetic group without retinopathy and a diabetic group with retinopathy, with additional healthy volunteers serving as controls. The differences in clinical characteristics between the three groups were compared. The incidence of DR in patients without retinopathy was then followed for one year. Follow-up participants were divided into subgroups based on whether DR occurred. Baseline data of subgroups were compared, and independent risk factors were analyzed. Results: Vitamin D levels were generally low. Participants with DR had significantly lower vitamin D levels than those without retinopathy (P < 0.01). A comparison of the two subgroups revealed lower baseline vitamin D data in the new-DR subgroup than in the non-DR subgroup ( P < 0.01). Vitamin D deficiency and elevated HbA1c levels were independent risk factors for DR ( OR = 0.926, 95% CI : 0.867～0.990, P = 0.024; OR = 2.108, 95% CI : 1.540～2.883, P < 0.01). The limit of vitamin D measured using the ROC curve was 18.15 ng/mL, and the area under the ROC curve was 0.635 (95% CI : 0.559～0.706, P = 0.002). Conclusions: Vitamin D levels were significantly reduced in those diagnosed with DR. At the same time, vitamin D deficiency may accelerate the onset of DR.
Vitamin D Levels and Risk of Ocular Disorders: Insights from Bidirectional and Multivariable Mendelian Randomization Analysis

Abstract:PurposeThis study aimed to assess the causal relationships between vitamin D levels and ocular disorders.MethodsIndependent genetic variables were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and publicly available databases. The summary statistics for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) were obtained from two large-scale GWAS studies, with sample sizes of 324,105 and 417,580 European individuals. The genetic variants of myopia, primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), anterior iridocyclitis, senile cataract, diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), wet age-related macular degeneration (WAMD) and optic neuritis were extracted from the latest release of FinnGen consortium, which contains genome data from Finnish participants. Subsequently, Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to obtain effect estimates. Additionally, we performed multivariable MR analysis and mediation analysis to validate the results.ResultsIn the discovery dataset, genetically predicted vitamin D concentration was found to be causally associated with an increased risk of WAMD, (odd ratio (OR) = 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09–1.67, PIVW = 0.005). However, no causal effects of genetically predisposed vitamin D levels on the risk of most types of ocular disorders were observed. Reverse MR revealed no causal relationships between the ocular diseases and vitamin D concentrations. The MR analyses of the validation dataset yielded consistent results. Additionally, the causal effect of vitamin D levels on the risk of WAMD remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders in the multivariable MR analysis (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.26–2.73, PIVW = 0.002).ConclusionOur MR analysis results provide robust evidence of a causal relationship between genetically predicted 25(OH)D levels and an increased risk of WAMD in European population. These findings offer important insights into the management and control of ocular disorders.

Abstract:Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disease after diabetic retinopathy. It causes visual dysfunction and vision loss due to complications such as macular edema, retinal ischemia, vitreous hemorrhage, and neovascularization. The prevalence of RVO is 0.42% for branch RVO (BRVO), 0.085 for central RVO (CRVO), and 0.52% for any RVO. Prevalence may vary by race and ethnicity, at a rate of 3.7 in whites, 5.7 in Asians, 3.9 in blacks, and 6.9 in Hispanics per 1000 individuals. It is estimated that around 16.4 (95% CI: 13.9–18.9) million people worldwide suffer from some type of RVO in at least 1 eye. [ 1 ] Several systemic and ocular risk factors, such as older age, systemic hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia, stroke, cerebrovascular event, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerotic diseases, hypercoagulable situation, thrombophilia, oral contraceptives, smoking, systemic inflammatory diseases, glaucoma, high intraocular pressure, and increased cup-to-disc ratio are associated with RVO development. [ 2–4 ] RVO pathogenesis is multifactorial and not completely understood. Still, it follows the principles of Virchow triad: compression of the vein by the atherosclerotic artery, injury of the vessel wall, and hypercoagulability.

Stereoselective aliphatic hydroxylation of 6-n-propylchromone-2-carboxylic acid by female Dutch rabbits.

Abstract:6-n-Alkylchromone-2-carboxylic acids are metabolized solely by aliphatic oxidation. In the rabbit, the 6-n-propyl congener (PCCA) undergoes omega-1 hydroxylation exclusively. Following administration of PCCA to female Dutch rabbits (500 mumol/kg), some 77% of the dose was excreted in the urine, 41% as PCCA and 36% as 6-(2'-hydroxy-n-propyl)chromone-2-carboxylic acid. Since this metabolite is chiral, we have examined the stereochemistry of the excreted material. Diastereoisomeric (as camphanate and alpha-methoxy-alpha-(trifluoro-methyl)phenylacetate esters) and direct chiral HPLC and chiral lanthanide shift NMR have each shown the S:R ratio of the excreted metabolite to be 76:24. When rabbits were dosed with the racemic metabolite, excretion of the compound was not stereoselective. The regio- and stereo-selectivity of the aliphatic hydroxylation of PCCA are thus reflections of the selectivities of the enzyme systems responsible for its formation and suggest PCCA to be an appropriate probe compound for the study of prochiral-chiral hydroxylations.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common eye disease complication of diabetes, and hypovitaminosis D is mentioned as one of the risk factors. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) are the best-known forms of vitamin D. Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol) is the active form of vitamin D, with the sun being one of its main sources. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin by exposure to sunlight without protective factors, but care must be taken to avoid the development of sunburn. It not only plays an important role in maintaining healthy bones and immune system but has also been highlighted in numerous studies to have an influence on various diseases, including diabetic retinopathy. A large number of people suffer from vitamin D hypovitaminosis worldwide, and diagnosis is made by measuring the concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in serum. Its deficiency can cause numerous diseases and, as such, supplementation is necessary. Clinical studies have proven the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, but with a doctor's recommendation and supervision due to possible negative side effects.

Abstract:Vitamin D is lacking in diabetic retinopathy. Vitamin D deficiency was a possible cause of the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy. Aims/Introduction Research has suggested that vitamin D deficiency is associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Our study aimed to determine whether vitamin D deficiency is the cause of diabetic retinopathy or if diabetic retinopathy reduces vitamin D levels. Materials and Methods Participants with type‐2 diabetes were recruited for this prospective observational clinical study and were divided into a diabetic group without retinopathy and a diabetic group with retinopathy, with additional healthy volunteers serving as a control group. The differences in clinical characteristics among the three groups were also compared. Patients without retinopathy were then followed for 1 year to monitor the incidence of diabetic retinopathy. After follow‐up, participants were divided into subgroups based on whether diabetic retinopathy occurred. The baseline data of the subgroups were compared, and the independent risk factors were analyzed. Results Vitamin D levels were generally low. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with dry eye syndrome: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract:<p>A systematic review and meta‐analysis was conducted to determine the association between the serum vitamin D level and dry eye. A systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases to identify clinical studies evaluating the association between vitamin D levels and dry eye. The random‐effect model was used to combine the results. Possible sources of heterogeneity across studies were determined by meta‐regression and sensitivity analysis. Overall, 10 studies (<i>n</i> = 18 919) were included. Patients with dry eye had a mean serum vitamin D level that was lower than that in healthy controls by 3.99 ng/ml (95% CI −6.57, −1.40; p = 0.002). The mean Ocular Surface Disease Index score was higher (mean difference 10.70, 95% CI 1.55–19.86; p = 0.02) and Schirmer's test without anaesthesia result was lower (mean difference 6.38 mm/5 min, 95% CI −10.48, −2.28; p = 0.002) in patients with vitamin D deficiency than in controls. Tear break‐up time was comparable in the vitamin D deficiency and control groups (p = 0.15). Sensitivity analyses indicated that the results obtained were robust. This meta‐analysis suggested that vitamin D deficiency is associated with worse subjective symptoms and less tear production in patients with dry eye. Vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for dry eye syndrome. Prospective cohort and intervention studies are warranted to determine if vitamin D has a protective role in the development of dry eye.</p>

Optical coherence tomography angiography evaluation of retinal and optic disc microvascular morphological characteristics in retinal vein occlusion

Abstract:Background: To evaluate microvascular morphological characteristics of the retina and optic disc (OD) in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), compare the results to age- and gender-matched healthy subjects, and determine correlations between OCTA parameters and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and age. Methods: In this retrospective study, right eyes of 53 RVO patients and 51 healthy subjects were compared regarding BCVA, as well as superficial and deep capillary plexus (SCP and DCP) vessel densities (VDs), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters, outer retinal and choriocapillaris flow areas, OD whole and peripapillary VDs, and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT). Retinal vein occlusion patients were further divided into subgroups based on therapy and risk factors, and OCTA parameters were compared. Results: Retinal vein occlusion rate or OCTA parameters did not differ significantly by gender (p > 0.05). Retinal vein occlusion patients had significantly decreased BCVA, whole, parafoveal and perifoveal SCP and DCP VDs, as well as VDs 300 µm area around FAZ (FD-300) than healthy subjects (p < 0.001). Their choriocapillaris flow area, RNFLT, whole and peripapillary VDs were also affected. However, FAZ area did not differ significantly between groups. Superior RNFLT (p = 0.016) and whole peripapillary VD (p < 0.001) differed significantly between laser photocoagulation-treated and non-treated patients. The remaining OCTA parameters revealed no significant differences CONCLUSIONS: The RVO and its therapeutic alternatives may affect both OD and retinal VDs. Given its numerous benefits, it seems that OCTA will be used more frequently in clinics for RVO diagnosis, monitoring, and therapeutic response evaluation.
