Rotation of Associate EditorsThree more Associate Editors have stepped down this month and we are sincerely grateful for the contributions they have made to the journal. Dr Ruth Butlin was Acting Deputy Editor: she has now retired after many years of active service with The Leprosy Mission in south Asia. Dr Ebenezer Daniel has also retired as an ophthalmologist initially in India and more recently in USA. Dr Astri Ferdiana is on the NLR staff in Indonesia and also an academic researcher. In addition to the three new Associate Editors recruited at the end of 2023, we are now joined by Dr Belen Dofitas, a Consultant Dermatologist and Associate Professor in Manila, Philippines, and Dr Shyamala Anand, a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Hyderabad, India and a Senior Technical Adviser to American Leprosy Missions.The March issue of Leprosy ReviewIn this final printed version of Leprosy Review, we highlight one of the longest running and most detailed studies of leprosy epidemiology ever conducted, centered on Karonga District, in northern Malawi. There were many components to this study, including extensive clinical and laboratory work, which began 50 years ago when leprosy case numbers were high. The carefully documented decline in transmission and incident case numbers – to almost zero today – is a testament to the thoroughness and practical nature of the research enterprise.There is much to be learnt from the data presented, but a further development of great interest is the evolving role of the research center at Karonga, now the Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU), as explained in the accompanying Editorial by Prof Paul Fine. As the goal of leprosy elimination comes into focus, at least in some countries and many sub-national regions, this is a good example of how to use the expertise and infrastructure that has been developed over recent decades in leprosy to address other health concerns, perhaps especially the so-called Neglected Tropical Diseases.
