Abstract:To utilize the full solar spectrum, photonic crystal (PC) films were constructed along with CdS and Graphene Oxide (GO) nanosheets to realize photothermal synergetic catalysis. The photonic band gap (PBG) effect of PC films could enhance the absorption of near-infrared light by GO. A microreactor was introduced as the platform for photocatalysis owing to its fast mass transfer and preeminent heat-localization effect. Tetracycline, as an antibiotic widely existed in waste water, was chosen as the degradation goal of photocatalysis tests. Compared with the pure CdS film, the CdS/GO/polystyrene PC film gains a 18.3 °C temperature rise and a 57.8% photocatalytic performance promotion, indicating the effectiveness of photothermal catalysis. Moreover, the CGPC film sealed in the microreactor exhibits a 33.0 °C temperature increase and a 4.5-fold photocatalytic efficiency grow against a same film in the bulk reactor, corroborating the great mass transfer and the preeminent heat-localization effect of the microreactor. Temperature distributions in the microreactor and the bulk reactor were simulated by computational simulations to corroborate aforementioned conclusions. In conclusion, photonic crystal and microreactor enhanced photothermal catalysis provides a feasible method for water treatment.

Enhancing Internal Electric Field of 3D Porous Chitosan-Pdi Polymer with Donor-Acceptor Structure for Efficient Photocatalytic Advanced Oxidation

Abstract:The charge separation efficiency of photocatalysts remains a formidable challenge for visible light-driven advanced oxidation. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) porous PDI-CTS photocatalyst with donor-acceptor (D-A) structure was synthesized and showed an impressive bisphenol A (BPA) degradation rate of 0.343 min(-1) through peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. The D-A interaction facilitates charge transfer from CTS to PDI, inducing a larger molecular dipole moment than pure PDCTA. Thus, robust internal electric field with 6.9 times enhancement was built up in PDI-CTS, facilitating the separation of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, multiple PDI active sites provided by 3D porous PDI-CTS were conducive to the adsorption of pollutants, and generated more electron-enriched PDI(-) for PDS activation. Since PDS captures electrons from PDI(-), the migration of holes to the surface is further improved, resulting in a remarkable mineralization rate of 87%. This work develops a unique D-A photocatalyst to promote photogenerated carriers migration for efficient photocatalytic advanced oxidation.

Abstract:In this study, highly active TiO2 sensitized by a novel axial substituted subphthalocyanine H12SubPcB-OPHCH2COOH (SubPc-3) was successfully prepared via a solvothermal method. Based on the crystallographic strategy, a new packing motif of SubPc-3 consisting of ligand-convex concave-concave head-head π-interaction was discovered for the first time, which affected its catalytic performance significantly. Furthermore, the DFT and TD-DFT methods were used to study the electronic feature and excited-state properties in SubPc-3 utilizing an optimized structure. By examining the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and bromophenol blue (BB) under visible light, the photocatalytic activities of the nanocomposites were investigated. The photocatalytic degradation rate of MO and BB degradation with TiO2/SubPc-3 are 97.8% and 99.5%, which are approximately 5.26 and 1.41 times compared to pure TiO2, respectively. Besides, the reusability studies indicated that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/SubPc-3 (25:1) could be maintained above 90.1% after five circulating photo-degradation. This work revealed the correlation between π-interaction of sensitizer and photocatalytic performance, as well as further confirmed the great potential of TiO2/SubPc-3 photocatalytic materials in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The development of visible light photocatalysts with the ability to efficiently degrade pollutants is an important measure to solve environmental problems. In this paper, Cu2+doped TiO2-SiO2(CTS) with photonic crystal structure composite was successfully synthesized via sol-gel strategy and template method. The prepared materials have abundant pore structure and uniform pore diameter, and the pores were arranged in a periodically hexagonal structure. It showed enhancing synergistic effect of adsorption-photodegradation ability for removing Rhodamine B (RhB). The brilliant adsorption capability of the catalyst is not only due to the addition of silica which can increase surface area that results the increase in adsorption ability, but also related to the rich and ordered porous structure provided by the photonic crystal. The catalyst has a narrow band gap ∼2.92 eV which exhibits the excellent photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation (>95% at 30 min) under visible light irradiation, and possesses higher photocatalytic reaction apparent rate constants (k) which is 7 folds higher than that of pure TiO2. The excellent photocatalytic performance is attributed to the Cu2+doping that narrows the band gap, increases light absorption, and promotes charge separation. Besides, the constructed photonic crystal structure not only further enhances charge transport but also provides more surface activity sites for photocatalytic reactions. More importantly, the ordered pore structure-photonic crystal can prolong the interaction time between light and catalyst through the slow photon effect and the porous scattering effect. Eventually, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the catalyst was significantly improved by the synergistic effect of the above mechanisms.
Rational Management of Photons for Enhanced Photocatalysis in Structurally-Colored Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Photonic Crystals

Abstract:A comprehensive study on the engineering of titanium dioxide-functionalized nanoporous anodic alumina distributed Bragg reflectors (TiO2–NAA-DBRs) for photocatalysis enhanced by the “slow photon” effect is presented. The photocatalytic performance of these composite photonic crystals (PCs) is assessed by monitoring photodegradation of a variety of organic molecules with absorbance bands across the spectral regions. This study demonstrates that photocatalytic performance of TiO2–NAA-DBRs is enhanced by the “slow photon” effect when the edges of the PC’s photonic stopband (PSB) fall within the absorbance band of the organic molecules. The photocatalytic performance is significantly enhanced when the PSB’s red edge is in close proximity to the absorbance band of the organic molecules. Overall photocatalytic degradation is also dependent on the total pore length of the PC structure, charge of the organic molecules, percentage of vis–near-IR irradiation, and matrix complexity (i.e., interfering ions and molecules) when the PC’s PSB is partially or entirely misaligned with respect to the absorbance band of the organic molecules. Finally, the real-life application of TiO2–NAA-DBRs to degrade pollutants such as pesticides in environmental matrices is demonstrated. This study provides new insights into the development of rationally engineered, high-performing, safe, and reusable photocatalyst systems.

Organic-inorganic TCPP/BiOCl hybrids with accelerated interfacial charge separation for boosted photocatalytic performance

Abstract:High interfacial separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and wide visible light spectral response are the two crucial factors for the improvement of photocatalytic performance in photocatalysis technology. In this research, a new 2D/3D organic-inorganic hybrid (TCPP/BiOCl) was constructed by combing 2D rod-shaped meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) with 3D hierarchical flower-like BiOCl by a solvothermal in-situ growth method. The introduction of macrocyclic TCPP largely expanded visible light absorption of BiOCl and boosted the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Consequently, compared to pure BiOCl, TCPP/BiOCl composites exhibited better photocatalytic performance on the degradation of broad-spectrum antibiotics including tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and enrofloxacin (ENR) under visible light irradiation, and the optimal mass ratio of TCPP was determined to be 1 wt%. Repeated cycling experiments proved the excellent stability of TCPP/BiOCl hybrids. The radicals trapping experiments and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) tests confirmed the synergism of superoxide radical (O2−), hydroxyl radical (OH) and h+ during the photocatalytic degradation process. Finally, a conceivable photocatalytic mechanism was proposed to interpret the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:A new Os(II) complex dyad featuring direct singlet-to-triplet (S-T) absorption and intramolecular triplet energy transfer (ITET) with lifetime up to 7.0 μs was designed to enhance triplet energy transfer efficiency during triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC). By pairing with 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA) as a triplet acceptor, intense upconverted green emission in deaerated solution was observed with unprecedented TTA-UC emission efficiency up to 26.3% (with a theoretical maximum efficiency of 100%) under photoexcitation in the first biological transparency window (650-900 nm). Meanwhile, a 7.1% TTA-UC emission efficiency was acquired in an air-saturated hydrogel containing the photosensitizer and a newly designed hydrophilic BPEA derivative. This ITET mechanism would inspire further development of a highly efficient TTA-UC system for biological fields and renewable energy production.

Abstract:Solar-powered photocatalysis for treating pharmaceutical wastewater is a promising approach for tackling environmental issues and energy crisis. However, its efficiency is hindered by unsatisfactory light-absorption efficiency, rapid charge recombination, and weak photo-redox potential. Here, an organic/inorganic ternary S-scheme system of carbon quantum dots (CDs)/tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/BiOBr (TCPP/CDs/BOB) was ingeniously built by depositing CDs and TCPP onto BOB microspheres for effective purification of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light. The Fermi level difference triggers electron delivery from TCPP to BOB upon hybridization, thereby creating an internal electric field (IEF) at the interface. This impels the effective separation of powerful photo-induced carriers. Moreover, CDs perform as electron reservoirs to further promote S-scheme carrier separation. Thus, more powerful photoelectrons in the CDs and holes in the BOB valence band are reserved for participation in photocatalytic reactions. The optimized TCPP/CDs/BOB-2 heterostructure exhibits an enhanced TC degradation capacity of 83.6% within 40 min and the rate constant of TCPP/CDs/BOB-2 is roughly 2.3, 1.8 and 2.0 times that of BOB, CDs/BOB, and TCPP/BOB, respectively. This work provides a new perspective for exploring organic/inorganic ternary S-scheme photocatalysts for water purification.

Abstract:We present the strategic design of donor‐acceptor cyanoarene‐based photocatalysts (PCs) aiming to augment beneficial PC degradation for halogen atom transfer (XAT)‐induced dehalogenation reactions. Our investigation reveals a competitive nature between the catalytic cycle and the degradation pathway, with degradation becoming dominant, particularly for less activated alkyl halides. The degradation behavior of PCs significantly impacts the efficiency of the XAT process, leading to exploration into manipulating the degradation behavior in a desirable direction. Recognizing the variation in the nature and rate of PC degradation, as well as its influence on the reaction across the range of PC structures, we carefully engineered the PCs to develop a pre‐catalyst, named 3DP‐DCDP‐IPN. This pre‐catalyst undergoes rapid degradation into an active form, 3DP‐DCDP‐Me‐BN, exhibited an enhanced reducing ability in its radical anion form to induce better PC regeneration and consequently effectively catalyzes the XAT reaction, even with a challenging substrate.

Harnessing low energy photons (635 nm) for the production of H2O2 using upconversion nanohybrid photocatalysts

Abstract:This study demonstrates, for the first time in literature, in situ photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through sensitized triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion (UC) of low-energy, sub-bandgap photons. The aqueous phase TTA-UC and subsequent photocatalytic oxygen reduction were achieved by a newly developed ternary nanohybrid that consists of three components: (1) a nano-scale silica core–shell structure that encapsulates TTA-UC chromophore-containing media; (2) a low-bandgap CdS photocatalyst on the surface of the silica nanocapsule; and (3) a graphene oxide nanodisk (GOND) as a co-catalyst. In this study, we employed a benchmark TTA-UC chromophore pair, palladium(II) tetraphenyltetrabenzo-porphyrin sensitizer and 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene acceptor, to upconvert red photons (λEx = 635 nm and 1.95 eV) to green photons (λEm = 505 nm and 2.45 eV). CdS is sensitized by upconverted green light to produce charge carriers, but not by incident red light without TTA-UC. The photogenerated electrons are efficiently transferred to a GOND to retard rapid charge recombination in CdS, which subsequently reduce dioxygen to produce H2O2 up to a 100 micromolar level per hour (or 3 mg L−1 h−1 with 0.5 g L−1 of GOND/CdS component only). Wrapping of CdS by a GOND was also found to markedly enhance the stability of CdS against photocorrosion without light shielding owing to its small size (ca. ∼80 nm) and transparency (α635nm = 1.85 g−1 dm3 cm−1).

Abstract:A ternary-structured photocatalyst of graphite carbon nitride quantum dots sensitized TiO2 nanotubes (g-CNQDs/TNTs) on SiO2 photonic crystals (PCs) was fabricated successfully to achieve higher photodegradation efficiency of dye in wastewater. Hydrothermal compositing conditions of g-CNQDs/TNTs were optimized at 160 °C for 20 h and with 1:8 of the loading ratio of g-CNQDs to TNTs. In addition, the effect of photonic bandgap (PBG) of PCs on photocatalytic activity was investigated. When the PBG of PCs was located near the absorption peak of g-CNQDs at 464 nm, the photodegradation performance of g-CNQDs/TNTs and g-CNQDs/TNTs/PCs was 2.14 times and 3.76 times higher than that of pristine TNTs, respectively. The synergistic effect of quantum dots and PCs contributes to suppressing the recombination of photo-generated carriers and enhancing light harvesting. This work provides a pathway for efficient pollutant degradation on multi-synergistic photocatalysts by constructing ternary-structure.

Engineering of Broadband Nanoporous Semiconductor Photonic Crystals for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis.

Abstract:A new class of semiconductor photonic crystals composed of titanium dioxide (TiO2)-functionalized nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) broadband-distributed Bragg reflectors (BDBRs) for visible-light-driven photocatalysis is presented. NAA-BDBRs produced by double exponential pulse anodization (DEPA) show well-resolved, spectrally tunable, broad photonic stop bands (PSBs), the width of which can be precisely tuned from 70 ± 6 to 153 ± 9 nm (in air) by progressive modification of the anodization period in the input DEPA profile. Photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2-NAA-BDBRs with tunable PSB width upon visible-NIR illumination is studied using three model photodegradation reactions of organics with absorbance bands across the visible spectral regions. Analysis of these reactions allows us to elucidate the interplay of spectral distance between red edge of TiO2-NAA-BDBRs' PSB, electronic bandgap, and absorbance band of model organics in harnessing visible photons for photocatalysis. Photodegradation reaction efficiency is optimal when the PSB's red edge is spectrally close to the electronic bandgap of the functional semiconductor coating. Photocatalytic performance decreases dramatically when the red edge of the PSB is shifted toward visible wavelengths. However, a photocatalytic recovery is observed when the PSB's red edge is judiciously positioned within the proximity of the absorption band of model organics, indicating that TiO2-NAA-BDBRs can harness visible electromagnetic waves to speed up photocatalytic reactions by drastically slowing the group velocity of incident photons at specific spectral regions. Our advances provide new opportunities to better understand and engineer light-matter interactions for photocatalysis, using TiO2-NAA-BDBRs as model nanoporous semiconductor platforms. These high-performing photocatalysts could find broad applicability in visible-NIR light harvesting for environmental remediation, green energy generation, and chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Researchers have focused on efficient techniques for degrading hazardous organic pollutants due to their negative impacts on ecological systems, necessitating immediate remediation. Specifically, TiO2-based photocatalysts, a wide-bandgap semiconductor material, have been extensively studied for their application in environmental remediation. However, the extensive band gap energy and speedy reattachment of electron (e-) and hole (h+) pairs in bare TiO2 are considered major disadvantages for photocatalysis. This review extensively focuses on the combination of semiconducting photocatalysts for commercial outcomes to develop efficient heterojunctions with high photocatalytic activity by minimizing the e-/h+ recombination rate. The improved activity of these heterojunctions is due to their greater surface area, rich active sites, narrow band gap, and high light-harvesting tendency. In this context, strategies for increasing visible light activity, including doping with metals and non-metals, surface modifications, morphology control, composite formation, heterojunction formation, bandgap engineering, surface plasmon resonance, and optimizing reaction conditions are discussed. Furthermore, this review critically assesses the latest developments in TiO2 photocatalysts for the efficient decomposition of various organic contaminants from wastewater, such as pharmaceutical waste, dyes, pesticides, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halo compounds. This review implies that doping is an effective, economical, and simple process for TiO2 nanostructures and that a heterogeneous photocatalytic mechanism is an eco-friendly substitute for the removal of various pollutants. This review provides valuable insights for researchers involved in the development of efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.
Photon localization-assisted visible light photocatalysis of photonic crystal CdS-N/ZnO heterojunction for efficient photodegradation tetracycline hydrochloride

Abstract:Herein, ZnO based materials are modified to narrow the photonic band gap, improved utilization rate of visible light and recombination efficiency of photoexcited carriers for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). For this purpose, a photonic crystal (PC) heterojunction was constructed comprising of nitrogen (N) doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) coupled with ZnO (CdS-N/ZnO) via sacrificial template and multilayer in-situ deposition methods. The constructed PC junction acted as photocatalyst for the effective degradation of TCH under visible light by synergistically promoting the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, narrowing the band gap and broadening the light absorption spectrum of ZnO. Moreover, a slow light effect was achieved by adjusting the band gap of the PC overlapped with the wavelength of incident light, which finally enhanced the light harvesting performance of the CdS-N/ZnO photocatalyst. The optimized PC CdS-N/ZnO composites exhibited efficient TCH removal rate of 97.0 % in 90 min and kb as 4.00–15.17 times that of other reported catalysts. Moreover, PC CdS-N/ZnO catalyst achieved 45.2 % mineralization rates reached in 120 min with high stability and reusability for six cycles. HPLC-MS method was used for monitoring the intermediates of TCH degradation, and also analyzing the possible pathways of products. In addition, the toxicity of TCH and its intermediates were also investigated, which showed that the toxicity has effectively been alleviated. The photocatalytic mechanism endowed that ·O 2 – and h + are the major active free radicals in the photocatalytic degradation process, and the electron transport path is type II heterostructure. This work will thus envisage a novel vision of designing ZnO photocatalysts for the antibiotic degradation in the practical application of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, 3D-photonic crystal design was utilized to enhance incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of WO(3) photoanodes. Large-area and high-quality WO(3) photonic crystal photoanodes with inverse opal structure were prepared. The photonic stop-bands of these WO(3) photoanodes were tuned experimentally by variation of the pore size of inverse opal structures. It was found that when the red-edge of the photonic stop-band of WO(3) inverse opals overlapped with the WO(3) electronic absorption edge at E(g) = 2.6-2.8 eV, a maximum of 100% increase in photocurrent intensity was observed under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm) in comparison with a disordered porous WO(3) photoanode. When the red-edge of the stop-band was tuned well within the electronic absorption range of WO(3), noticeable but less amplitude of enhancement in the photocurrent intensity was observed. It was further shown that the spectral region with a selective IPCE enhancement of the WO(3) inverse opals exhibited a blue-shift in wavelength under off-normal incidence of light, in agreement with the calculated stop-band edge locations. The enhancement could be attributed to a longer photon-matter interaction length as a result of the slow-light effect at the photonic stop-band edge, thus leading to a remarkable improvement in the light-harvesting efficiency. The present method can provide a potential and promising approach to effectively utilize solar energy in visible-light-responsive photoanodes.
Dual-layered up-conversion films with tunable multi-peaks spectrum for efficient photocatalytic degradation

Abstract:The incorporation of multiple up-conversion (UC) materials into dual-layered UC films presents a promising strategy for achieving multi-peaks spectrum. Here, we developed dual-layered UC films containing triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion luminescence (TTA-UCL) chromophores and NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanoparticles to enable multi-peaks emissions at 340-360 and 390 nm in the transmission manner and 340, 360 and 400–440 nm in the reflection manner under irradiations of green and NIR light. The light absorption and emission behaviors from different film surfaces were studied clearly. Besides, TiO2 and g-C3N4 with different absorption spectra were chosen to verify the availability of the dual-layered films to tune emission spectra. When both green and NIR light were used simultaneously, TiO2 and g-C3N4 can degrade tetracycline (TC) by 2.14 and 1.77 times more than the cases where single light was used alone. The photocatalytic abilities of TiO2 or g-C3N4 can be further improved by the selective increase in NIR or green light power density due to their different absorption spectra. The dual-layered films containing TTA-UCL chromophores and NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanoparticles provide a candidate framework for UC systems with tunable short-wavelength spectra to expand their applications in the fields of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants based on solar light is regarded as an important strategy for addressing water scarcity issue. However, efficient utilization of light in this process requires careful optimization of the photocatalytic reactor layout to maximize the interaction between light, photocatalyst and reactant molecules. Herein, a three-dimensional monolithic photocatalytic microreactor, in which in-situ grown TiO 2 /ZIF-8/AgCl/Ag was distributed on the surface of polydopamine (PDA)-modified melamine sponge (MS), was developed. The structural and optical properties were examined using SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, EIS and TPR characterizations. Methylene blue (MB) was selected as the pollutant model, and the results showed that the photocatalytic microreactor had the super-fast degradation ability of MB due to high specific surface area, synergistic effects caused by TiO 2 /ZIF-8/AgCl/Ag hybrid structure and enhanced light-matter interaction. A MB removal rate (99.99%) was obtained within 8 min under visible light irradiation. After six times recycling, the photocatalytic microreactor still showed high photodegradation ability (90%). The radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance analysis showed that ·O 2 - , h + and ∙OH were the reactive groups that played a role in the reaction system, and then a possible catalytic mechanism of TiO 2 /ZIF-8/AgCl/Ag was proposed.

Background This research addresses the urgent need for efficient water treatment methods to treat water pollution resulting from industrial activities and population growth. It focuses on developing semiconductor-based photo-catalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light, aiming to contribute to pollution control and sustainable energy solutions. Methods A novel layer-structured ternary BiOCl/BiOBr/Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via a rapid, one-step microwave-assisted method. The unique layered structure of this heterojunction facilitated efficient migration and separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, essential for effective photocatalysis. Significant Findings The synthesized nanocomposite exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance, achieving complete degradation of 30 mg L −1 RhB, 98.0% efficiency for 10 mg L −1 TCH, and 83.0% efficiency for 10 mg L −1 MO. Furthermore, the photo-catalyst displayed remarkable photostability, retaining 99.7% efficiency even after seven cycles of RhB degradation. The study also revealed favorable conditions for RhB degradation, emphasizing the impact of high temperature and low pH media while demonstrating the catalyst's resilience to the presence of ions (NO 3 − , Cl − , SO 4 2− , and NH 4 + ). The study indicates that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was predominant among the oxidizing species in photodegradation. This work introduces a highly efficient and stable ternary BiOCl/BiOBr/Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposite as a promising solution for addressing water pollution issues and harnessing visible light for photocatalytic applications. Abstract:The bandgap engineering of semiconductors, in particular low‐cost organic/polymeric photocatalysts could directly influence their behavior in visible photon harvesting. However, an effective and rational pathway to stepwise change of the bandgap of an organic/polymeric photocatalyst is still very challenging. An efficient strategy is demonstrated to tailor the bandgap from 2.7 eV to 1.9 eV of organic photocatalysts by carefully manipulating the linker/terminal atoms in the chains via innovatively designed polymerization. These polymers work in a stable and efficient manner for both H2 and O2 evolution at ambient conditions (420 nm < λ < 710 nm), exhibiting up to 18 times higher hydrogen evolution rate (HER) than a reference photocatalyst g‐C3N4 and leading to high apparent quantum yields (AQYs) of 8.6%/2.5% at 420/500 nm, respectively. For the oxygen evolution rate (OER), the optimal polymer shows 19 times higher activity compared to g‐C3N4 with excellent AQYs of 4.3%/1.0% at 420/500 nm. Both theoretical modeling and spectroscopic results indicate that such remarkable enhancement is due to the increased light harvesting and improved charge separation. This strategy thus paves a novel avenue to fabricate highly efficient organic/polymeric photocatalysts with precisely tunable operation windows and enhanced charge separation.
Enhanced visible light responsive piezoelectric photocatalysis based on Bi2S3 coated BaTiO3 nanorods heterostructures

Abstract:Although the presence of the built-in electric field will solve the problem of carrier complexation in photocatalytic systems to some extent. However, free carriers will quickly shield the stabilized electric field and lose its effect. Therefore, how to introduce the dynamic piezoelectric field into the photocatalytic system has become an imminent problem. Herein, we developed an overcoated, visible light responsive, piezoelectric-assisted photocatalytic system by depositing Bi2S3 photocatalysts with a narrow-band system onto the surface of highly piezo-responsive BaTiO3 nanorods (BTO NRs). The heterojunction structure, bound by Bi-O chemical bonding, enhances carrier transport efficiency under the influence of the piezoelectric field. In the degradation experiments, the first-order rate constant for the degradation of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) in the BTO NRs/Bi2S3 system with the optimal complex ratio was 0.0276 min-1, which was 3.1 and 7.8 times higher than that of BTO NRs and Bi2S3, respectively. Additionally, we deduced the degradation pathways of CTC through a combination of Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS), evaluating the toxicity of the intermediates. This complex system, featuring a highly photo-responsive semiconductor as a photo-acceptor deposited on a piezoelectric semiconductor surface providing a dynamic built-in electric field, enhances carrier separation efficiency under optimal light energy utilization conditions. These findings present novel and effective strategies for addressing two primary challenges in photocatalytic systems: low spectral utilization and significant photogenerated carrier complexation.
