Abstract:Intensive ecological interventions have been carried out in highly polluted shallow lakes to improve their environments and restore their ecosystems. However, certain treatments, such as dredging polluted sediment and stocking fish, can impact the aquatic communities, including benthos and fishes. These impacts can alter the composition and characteristics of aquatic communities, which makes community-based ecological assessments challenging. Here we develop a bacteria-based index of biotic integrity (IBI) that can clearly indicate the restoration of aquatic ecosystems with minimal artificial interventions. We applied this method to a restored shallow lake during 3-year intensive ecological interventions. The interventions reduced nutrients and heavy metals by 27.1% and 16.7% in the sediment, while the total organic carbon (TOC) increased by 8.0% due to the proliferation of macrophytes. Additionally, the abundance of sulfur-related metabolic pathways decreased by 10.5% as the responses to improved ecosystem. The score of bacteria-based IBI, which is calculated based on the diversity, composition, and function of benthic bacterial communities, increased from 0.62 in 2018 to 0.81 in 2021. Our study not only provides an applicable method for aquatic ecological assessment under intensive artificial interventions but also extends the application of IBI to complex application scenarios, such as ecosystems with significantly different aquatic communities and comparisons between different basins.
[Bacterioplankton Index of Biotic Integrity (BP-IBI): an Approach for Assessing River Ecosystem Health in Dianchi Watershed].

Abstract:The index of biotic integrity (IBI) has been widely applied to the health assessment of river ecosystems. However, the currently available IBI methods are lack of decomposer-based assessment. Based on the T-RFLP result of bacterioplankton, we developed the bacterioplankton index of biotic integrity (BP-IBI) after the screening of major environmental factors and candidate metrics to assess the health of the inflow rivers in Dianchi Watershed. The evaluation result indicated that the eco-health conditions of 11 reference sites were either level I (8 sites) or level II (3 sites), while the 27 damaged sites were level I (4 sites), level II (14 sites), level III (7 sites), and level IV (2 sites), and there was no level V site. Compared with the other IBI methods and the integrated pollution index, BP-IBI showed better effect in reflecting the influence of the key environmental factors, the land use types and the upstream water types in river ecosystems. Therefore, BP-IBI is a good method to characterize the health status of river ecosystems.

Abstract:The efficiency, accuracy and universality of ecological assessment methods comprise an important foundation for comprehensive assessment and restoration of large river ecological health at the watershed scale. New evaluation metrics and methods are urgently needed to be developed to adapt the characteristics of large rivers, including geographical differences in surface runoff, regional ecological complexity, and seasonal changes. In this study, a bacteria-weighted index of biotic integrity was developed to assess the ecological health of large rivers (lrBW-IBI) based on compositional and functional characteristics of sediment bacterial communities from 33 sections of the lower mainstream of Yangtze River. Five key metrics were determined by range, responsiveness, and redundancy tests. Principal component analysis (PCA), entropy method, criteria importance through intercriteria correlation and random forest were applied to calculate weighted coefficients of key metrics. The optimal lrBW-IBI was observed through the sum of PCA weighted-metrics: the relative abundance of Latescibacteria (0.234), Gemmatimonadaceae (0.149), Nitrospira spp. (0.234), Rhizobiales (0.228), and nitrogenase NifH (0.156). According to PCA based lrBW-IBI, 12.12%, 24.24%, 39.39%, and 24.24% of river sections were labeled excellent, good, moderate, and relatively poor, respectively. The ecological status of the lower mainstream of the Yangtze River did not change significantly across seasons but declined gradually from upstream to downstream. This study provides a new assessment tool for the ecological health of large rivers and highlights the importance of microbial ecological index in river ecology.

Abstract:Ecological water replenishment via interbasin water diversion projects provides opportunities for ecological river restoration. Untangling water quality changes, microbiota dynamics, and community functions is necessary for sustainable ecological management. Using the Yongding River as a case study, we monitored the water quality and applied genomic sequencing to investigate microbial communities of the river in different stages after ecological water replenishment. Our results showed that river water quality represented by chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) did not change significantly during months after water replenishment. The bacterial community composition varied in different months and river subsections. The Cyanobium_PCC-6307, CL500-29 marine group, and Pseudomonas were dominant in the later stages after water replenishment. Water temperature, pH, and nutrient levels significantly affected the microbial community composition, and ecological restoration may have the potential to influence nitrogen cycling in the river. Our results can provide ecological insights into sustainable water quality maintenance and river management following ecological restoration enabled by ecological water replenishment.

Abstract:Biological integrity refers to the capacity to sustain a healthy ecosystem comprising multiple biological communities within a region. Robust assessments of biological integrity thus require the sampling of multiple biological groups. We evaluated the ecological health of the Qingyi River Basin (QRB) using three indexes of biotic integrity (IBIs), including those based on the phytoplankton (P-IBI), zooplankton (Z-IBI), and benthos (B-IBI), and found that the health of the QRB system was “good” according to P-IBI (75.9 ± 17.9), Z-IBI (74.8 ± 21.8), and WQI (92.2 ± 5.3) and “moderate” according to B-IBI (43.8 ± 16.1). The assessments of the reliability of the three IBIs by exploring the relationships between biological communities and water quality environments from multiple perspectives revealed that the three IBIs were spatially positively correlated with WQI, Pearson and linear regression (P < 0.01). The results of redundancy analysis between the three IBIs, their constituent metris and physicochemical factors indicate that physicochemical factors have varying importance in determining the scores of the three IBIs. However, the scores of the three IBIs were lower than that of the WQI (P < 0.01), and B-IBI scores were lower than those of P-IBI and Z-IBI (both P < 0.001). In conclusion, IBIs are effective for evaluating the health of river ecosystems and could be widely applied. IBIs show greater sensitivity than WQI for detecting environmental damage, and B-IBI was the most sensitive index.

Abstract:As the largest tributary of the Yellow River and a large semi-arid area, the ecological status of the Wei River Basin, China, has become an important issue of concern. Habitat, water quality and biological pressure are the factors affecting the structure and function of rivers. However, it is a challenging task to determine the joint rather than isolated influence of factors on the watershed. Plankton is sensitive to the status of water system, so it is used to analyze the interaction between habitat indexes and physic-chemical parameters of water body. In this study, plankton and water samples were collected from 21 sampling sites in the whole Wei River Basin in October 2019. The planktonic index of biotic integrity (P-IBI), biomass, abundance, diversity index and trophic status were established. The integrity of plankton in the basin was evaluated. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to assess the correlation and variability between 23 physicochemical factors and habitat indexes of planktonic community. The results show that the applicability and accuracy of P-IBI are good. The planktonic integrity of the ecosystem in the basin is "critical". The upper and lower reaches of the main stream are better than those of the middle reaches, while the upper reaches of the two major tributaries are in poor condition due to the influence of cities and industries. Wei River system is better than Jing River and Beiluo River system. Physical and chemical factors, including dissolved oxygen, turbidity, phycocyanin and chlorophyll, are the main driving forces affecting the integrity of plankton in the study area. Relatively speaking, the contribution of physicochemical parameters to P-IBI was greater than that of habitat indexes, and there was a shared explanatory variance between them. The abundance level can best reflect the isolation effect of two aspects of the environment. The results show that the planktonic index of biotic integrity is a potential tool to reflect the interaction of habitat conditions and physical and chemical factors. The whole basin scale research is helpful to promote habitat restoration and water conservation.

Abstract:Indices of biotic integrity (IBIs) are widely used to assess aquatic ecosystem health. However, there are few studies on their relationships. Based on fish, macroinvertebrate and plankton survey data collected in the Ganjiang River system from 2016 to 2017, redundancy analysis (RDA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to analyze how the community structures of these organisms respond to environmental variables. The fish IBI (F-IBI), benthic macroinvertebrate IBI (B-IBI), and phytoplankton IBI (P-IBI) were applied to evaluate the health status of the aquatic ecosystem. A Kruskal–Wallis test (p < 0.05) and Spearman’s correlation coefficient analysis were performed to evaluate the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the results. Our results suggested that the F-IBI-, B-IBI-, and P-IBI-based assessments indicated good, fair, and healthy Ganjiang River system ecosystem health statuses, respectively, and significant differences existed among these indices (p < 0.05). The main environmental factors affecting F-IBI, B-IBI, and P-IBI were different. At the temporal scale, the F-IBI and B-IBI were stable, while the P-IBI fluctuated obviously. The consistency between the F-IBI and B-IBI results was better than that between each of these indices and the P-IBI results, and the consistency was better on a larger scale. These research results show that comprehensive assessments based on multiple groups rather than a single group can better characterize the impacts of environmental pressures on water ecosystems.

Abstract:Land use changes usually lead to the deterioration of freshwater ecosystems and reduced biodiversity. Aquatic organisms are considered valuable indicators for reflecting the conditions of freshwater ecosystems. Understanding the relationship between organisms and land use type, as well as physiochemical conditions, is beneficial for the management, monitoring and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, fish, macroinvertebrates, and diatoms were investigated at 60 sampling sites in the Wei River basin from October 2012 to April 2013 to determine the relationships between the environment and aquatic organisms. The richness, abundance, Shannon diversity, evenness, Margalef diversity, and Simpson diversity were selected as biological indices for analyzing the correlation between these communities and environmental variables according to Pearson’s coefficient. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to analyze the relationship between the biotic communities and environmental variables. The results showed that three diatom indices were weakly correlated with chemical oxygen demand (COD), qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QH), and dissolved oxygen (DO). Four macroinvertebrate indices were associated with total phosphorus (TP) while total nitrogen (TN), and agricultural land (AL) had a significant influence on assemblages, suggesting that macroinvertebrates could respond to nutrient levels in the Wei River basin. All land use types had a strong effect on fish indices except AL, indicating that fish would be better used as indicators of spatial changes in the aquatic ecosystem. In conclusion, fish and macroinvertebrates have the potential for use in routine monitoring programs in the Wei River basin.

A case of pulmonary tuberculosis with false negative QuantiFERON TB-2G Test.

Abstract:A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a high fever and productive cough. He had a previous history of total gastrectomy and splenectomy at the age of 45 years due to gastric cancer. He also showed severe macrocytic anemia with low vitamin B12, and an infiltrative shadow was found in the right lung on an X-ray. Sputum examination on admission revealed no significant pathogenic bacteria, and an acid-fast stain and a M. tuberculosis PCR test were negative. QuantiFERON TB-2G Test (QFT) was negative on admission. Because pneumococcal antigen in the urine was positive, we initially diagnosed pneumococcal pneumonia and treatment with antibiotics was started. However, symptoms were not resolved with several antibiotics, finally, a thoracoscopic lung biopsy under general anesthesia was performed for a definitive diagnosis. The biopsy showed epithelioid cell granuloma in the alveolar spaces, and the 8 weeks culture of sputum taken on admission revealed M. tuberculosis. Finally, a pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed and treatment with four drugs of HERZ was begun. We have encountered a case of pulmonary tuberculosis combined with a lobar pneumococcal pneumonia, and negative for QFT. In general, splenectomy is known as a risk factor of pneumococcal infection. And vitamin B12 deficiency due to gastrectomy is one of the risk factors for cellular immunity impairment and was possibly to the false negative QFT and development of TB.
Does Ecological Water Replenishment Help Prevent a Large Wetland from Further Deterioration? Results from the Zhalong Nature Reserve, China.

Abstract:Ecological water replenishment (EWR) has been increasingly applied to the restoration and maintenance of wetland hydrological conditions across China since the beginning of the 21st century. However, little is known about whether EWR projects help protect and/or restore wetland ecohydrology. As one of the earliest and longest-running EWR projects in China, water has been released from the Nenjiang River into the Zhalong wetland since 2001. It is important to examine the ecohydrological effects of this EWR project. In this study, long time series remote sensing data were used to extract the water area, inundation frequency, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to explore how eco-hydrological conditions changed during the pre- (1984-2000) and post-EWR (2001-2018) periods in the Zhalong wetland. Results show that the inundation area decreased due to the reduced surface water inflow during the pre-EWR period. Similarly, monthly vegetation NDVI in the growing season generally exhibited a decreasing and an increasing trend during the pre- and post-EWR periods, respectively. In the post-EWR period, NDVI increased by 19%, 73%, 45%, 28%, 13% for the months of May through September, respectively. Due to EWR, vegetation growth in areas with low inundation frequency was better than in areas with high inundation frequency. We found that the EWR project, runoff, and precipitation contributed 25%, 11%, and 64% to changes in the NDVI, respectively, and 46%, 37%, and 17% to changes in inundation area, respectively. These results indicate that the EWR project has improved hydrological conditions in the Zhalong wetland. For further maximum benefits of EWR in the Zhalong wetlands, we suggest that implementing similar eco-hydrological projects in the future should focus on flood pulse management to increase the inundation area, improve hydrological connectivity, and create new habitats.

Abstract:Compared with the aquatic ecosystem destruction caused by rapid urban development, substantial ecological restoration usually requires long periods and is a challenging process. Although river ecological restoration has been successful in different regions, the relationship between biodiversity, water quality, and effective measures applicable to developing countries remains poorly understood. This study was conducted in the Dasha River in Shenzhen city, one of the fastest-growing cities in China. The rehabilitation measures were sorted out in four phases to study the impact on water quality and biodiversity. In response, three campaigns were carried out to take phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthos samples within the last three engineering stages, in 2007, 2012, and 2021. Synchronized investigations of water quality were conducted monthly from 2006 to 2021. Our analysis showed that the biodiversity of benthos has improved in recent years, which marks a turnaround for the aquatic ecological environment. According to the Hilsenhoff family biotic index (FBI), the water quality level in the 2021 campaign was promoted to “Good” in the downstream and “Fair” in the upper and middle streams. By analyzing Pearson’s correlations between response ratios of water quality parameters and the Shannon–Wiener index of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthos, we concluded that biodiversity is significantly related to water quality. Specifically, the biodiversity of zooplankton is associated with ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) (R2 = − 0.77, P < 0.05), and benthos diversity is strongly negatively correlated with NH3-N, total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand (R2 ≥ -0.82, P < 0.01). Despite the temporary negative impact of along-river interception on aquatic organisms in the campaign of 2012, the measures quickly and effectively improved water quality, which is the foundation for biodiversity improvement in 2021. This study provides insights into relationships among biodiversity, water quality, and regulation projects and can offer a reference for selecting aquatic ecosystem restoration measures in developing areas.

Abstract:Management intensity was considered an important factor in evaluating and regulating the anthropogenic restoration measures for a degraded ecosystem. By comparing selected conventional soil physicochemical, microbial and incorporating aggregate-associated indices between wetland plot with high-intensity freshwater replenishment (HI wetlands) and wetland plot with low-intensity freshwater replenishment (LI wetlands), edaphic responses of degraded estuarine wetlands to freshwater replenishment at different intensity were assessed in the present study. The results showed that high-intensity freshwater replenishment exerted better soil salinization and alkalization alleviation effects on degraded estuarine wetlands, which caused lower EC and pH values in HI wetlands than those in LI wetlands. And soil microbial biomass was promoted, with freshwater replenishment intensity increased, as indicated by MBC and total PLFAs. Minor alternation of soil microbial community composition was observed with an elevated abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in HI wetlands. On the other hand, freshwater replenishment at low intensity was found to contribute to organic matter accumulation, as indicated by both higher SOC concentrations and carbon stocks in LI wetlands than those in HI wetlands. And soil aggregate-associated indicators provided more scientific clues that freshwater replenishment at low intensity favored the formation of large macroaggregates, and thus supported higher soil aggregate stability. Moreover, a transfer of allocations of aggregate-associated carbon and nitrogen stocks from microaggregates to large macroaggregates was induced as the freshwater replenishment intensity decreased, and the principle governing factors were the proportion of large macroaggregates in soils, soil salinity and microbial decomposition rates based on multivariate statistical analysis. The findings of this study could provide basic data regarding soil physicochemical properties, microbial characteristics and soil structure stability in restored wetlands of the Yellow River Delta with freshwater replenishment at different intensity and guiding adaptive management strategies of freshwater replenishment to enhance the ecological functions of estuarine wetlands.

Evaluation of water ecological health of Yanhe River based on benthic fauna integrity index

Abstract:Yanhe River Basin is located in the hilly gully area of the Loess Plateau with serious soil erosion. Strong human activities in the middle and lower reaches lead to fragile ecological environment. Soil erosion status varies among different geomorphic units within the watershed (loess liang hilly and gully region, loess mao hilly and gully region, and broken platform region). In this study, we surveyed the benthic community from the Yanhe River Basin in April (spring) and October (autumn) of 2021. To evaluate the water ecological health status of the watershed and investigate the effects of different geomorphic units on the benthic integrity of the benthos, we constructed the benthic-index of biotical integrity (B-IBI) based on the biological data. We identified a total of 113 species of 73 genera in 4 phyla of benthic fauna, with aquatic insects as the dominant taxa in both seasons. Through screening 26 candidate indicators, we found that the spring B-IBI consisted of three indicators: relative abundance of individuals of dominant taxonomic units, family biotic index (FBI), and relative abundance of predator individuals, and that autumn B-IBI was composed of the number of taxonomic units of Ephemeroptera, FBI value, and the relative abundance of predator individuals. Results of the B-IBI evaluation showed that 83.3% of the sampling sites in the upper mainstem and tributaries were at a healthy condition, while only 28.6% sampling sites in the middle and lower mainstem and tributaries were at a healthy condition. In addition, the health status of the watershed was better in spring than in autumn. The Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric tests showed that benthic density, species number, and B-IBI percentile scores in the fragmented loess area were significantly higher in spring than in autumn, and significantly lower in autumn than in the loess liang hilly and gully region and loess mao hilly and gully region, being mainly caused by the increasing erosion due to the concentrated rainfall in wet season. Results of the redundancy analysis showed that key environmental factors affecting benthic community structure in spring were boulder substrate, chlorophyll-a, oxidation reduction potential, turbidity, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen, and were nitrate-nitrogen, oxidation reduction potential, and pH in autumn.
Consideration of Multitrophic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functions Improves Indices on River Ecological Status

Abstract:Biological quality elements have been developed worldwide to assess whether a water body is in a good status or not. However, current studies mainly focus on a single taxonomic group or a small set of species, often limited by methods of morphological identification, and lack further aspects of biodiversity (e.g., across taxa and multiple attributes) and ecosystem functions. Here, we advance a framework for assessing the river's ecological status based on complete biodiversity data measured by environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and measurements of ecosystem functions in addition to physicochemical elements across a large riverine system in China. We identified 40 indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem functions, covering five taxonomic groups from bacteria to invertebrates, and associated with multiple attributes of biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Our data show that human impact on ecosystems could be accurately predicted by these eDNA-based indicators and ecosystem functions, using cross-validation with a known stressor gradient. Moreover, indices based on these indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem functions not only distinguish the physicochemical characteristics of the sites but also improve the assessment accuracy of 20-30% for the river's ecological status. Novel Indicator for Assessing Wetland Degradation Based on the Index of Hydrological Connectivity and Its Correlation with the Root-Soil Interface

Abstract:In this study, an innovative method was used to assess the spatial and temporal patterns of the hydrological connectivity in soil profiles in the Yellow River Delta wetland. In this method, field dye-tracing experiments conducted in the study area (i.e., large [LWa] and small communities [LWb] of Phragmites australis and Suaeda glauca [JP]) were considered, and the root-soil interface in the region and the status of the wetland degradation were analyzed. The results revealed that the index of hydrological connectivity (IHC) significantly changed both spatially and temporally. The high IHC values reaching a 0.392 ± 0.209 gradient were concentrated in the middle and western parts of the study areas. The spatial distribution of the high hydrological connectivity has been extremely fragmented since 2010. The LWb (severely degraded wetland) and JP (extremely degraded wetland) were found to be more seriously degraded than the LWa (moderately degraded wetland) in the study area. The changes in the IHC were positively correlated with the principal component (PC) values of the wetland degradation. The IHC is a novel indicator of the status of wetland degradation. Furthermore, the soil holding capacity, soil non-capacity porosity, and soil ventilation were relatively important for the changes in the IHC. Compared with the soil properties, the hydrological responses of the roots systems can be neglected at the root-soil interface. Based on our results, we propose an alternative wetland restoration solution for the Yellow River Delta wetland: 1) a seepage layer in the surface soils (0–10 cm), shallow ploughing treatment, and litter or straw return to the soil surface should be conducted to increase the hydrological connectivity of the soil surface; 2) reeds should not be reaped every year to remove the nutrients from this area; and 3) appropriate freshwater inputs should be strengthened.

Abstract:Freshwater biodiversity is increasingly threatened by dams and many other anthropogenic stressors, yet our understanding of the complex responses of different biotas and their multiple facets remains limited. Here, we present a multi-faceted and integrated-indices approach to assess the differential responses of freshwater biodiversity to multiple stressors in the Yangtze River, the third longest and most dam-densely river in the world. By combining individual biodiversity indices of phytoplankton, zooplankton, periphyton, macroinvertebrates, and fish with a novel integrated aquatic biodiversity index (IABI), we disentangled the effects of hydrology, water quality, land use, and natural factors on both α and β diversity facets in taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic dimensions. Our results revealed that phytoplankton and fish species and functional richness increased longitudinally, while fish taxonomic and phylogenetic β diversity increased but phytoplankton and macroinvertebrate β diversity remained unchanged. Hydrology and water quality emerged as the key drivers of all individual biodiversity indices, followed by land use and natural factors, with fish and phytoplankton showed the strongest responses. Importantly, we found that natural, land use, and hydrological factors indirectly affected biodiversity by altering water quality, which in turn directly influenced taxonomic and phylogenetic IABIs. Our findings highlight the complex interplay of multiple stressors in shaping freshwater biodiversity and underscore the importance of considering both individual and integrated indices for effective conservation and management. We propose that our multi-faceted and integrated-indices approach can be applied to other large, dam-modified river basins globally.
Enhancing water quality and ecosystems of reclaimed water-replenished river: A case study of Dongsha River, Beijing, China

Abstract:The use of reclaimed water for urban river replenishment has raised concerns regarding its impact on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to reveal the improvements seen in an urban river undergoing a practical water eco-remediation after being replenished with reclaimed water. A one-year monitoring of water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton was carried out in Dongsha River undergoing eco-remediation in Beijing, China. The results showed that compared to the unrestored river, the concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TP, and TN decreased by 28.22 ± 7.88 %, 40.24 ± 11.77 %, 44.17 ± 17.29 %, and 28.66 ± 10.39 % in the restoration project area, respectively. The concentration of Chlorophyll-a in the restoration area was maintained below 40 μg/L. During summer, when algal growth is vigorous, the density of Cyanophyta in the unrestored river decreased from 46.84 × 104cells/L to 16.32 × 104cells/L in the restored area, while that of Chlorophyta decreased from 41.61 × 104cells/L to 11.87 × 104cells/L, a reduction of 65.16 % and 71.47 %, respectively. The dominant phytoplankton species were replaced with Bacillariophyta, such as Synedra sp. and Nitzschia sp., indicating that the restoration of aquatic plants reduces the risk of Cyanophyta blooms. Zooplankton species also changed in the restoration area, especially during summer. The density of pollution-tolerant Rotifer and Protozoa decreased by 31.06 % and 27.22 %, while the density of clean water indicating Cladocera increased by 101.19 %. We further calculated the diversity and evenness index of phytoplankton and zooplankton within and outside the restoration area. The results showed that the Shannon-Weaver index for phytoplankton and zooplankton in the restoration area was 2.1 and 1.91, which was higher than those in the river (1.84 and 1.82). This further confirmed that aquatic plant restoration has positive effects. This study can provide a practical reference and theoretical basis for the implementation of water ecological restoration projects in other reclaimed water rivers in China.

Abstract:Various human activities can damage the structure of rural rivers ecosystems and reduce their self-purification capacity. In Northeast China, the cold climate also poses serious challenges to river restoration. What types of restoration technology should be adopted and what impacts the restoration project will bring, in terms of river ecological function improvements, should be further discussed. To investigate the effects of ecological restoration projects and different restoration measures on water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates of rural rivers in cold regions in Northeast China, benthic macroinvertebrates and 10 indicators of water quality including ammonium (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3–-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), water temperature (Tem), pH (pH), electrical conductivity (EC) and chlorophyll-a (Chla) were monitored. We analyzed the temporal and spatial changes of benthic macroinvertebrates and 6 typical water quality indicators including NH4+-N, NO3–-N, TN, TP, COD and DO, which were collected in 4 seasons at 7 typical river sections. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was used to evaluate the seasonal and spatial variation of water quality during monitoring period, and a new WQImin model consisting of six crucial parameters, i.e., pH, DO, NH4+-N, TN, TP and COD, was established by principal component analysis. The results showed that the ecological restoration project enhanced the self-purification capacity of the river, and increased diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates. The maximum removal rates of the main pollution indicators NH4+-N, NO3–-N, TN, TP and COD were 96.49 %, 43.92 %, 49.69 %, 8.3 % and 25.95 %, respectively. The maximum increase rates of DO and benthic macroinvertebrates diversity were 77.96 % and 310.9 %, respectively. The operation effect of the restoration project had an obvious seasonal effect, with the best effect during the spring and summer. The project still has good repair effect in winter. In terms of water purification, the effect of the overflow weir combined with aquatic organisms was better than that of the single overflow weir in the river channel. There was the best effect of the engineering measures in summer. The ecological restoration project can improve the river water quality and the benthic macroinvertebrates conditions. Compared to before the restoration, WQImin values increased 168.81 % and 44.21 % in winter and summer, respectively, and Shannon index increased 6.57 % and 41.67 % in summer and autumn, respectively.

Abstract:Healthy aquatic ecosystems can offer basic ecological services for the sustainable development of humans and society. Water quality greatly influences the macroinvertebrate community in aquatic ecosystems and can alter the aquatic ecosystem's health status. However, the quantitative relationship between macroinvertebrate community and water quality factors in rivers remains unclear, particularly in urban rivers, which are strongly affected by human activities. Therefore, a new framework for the quantitative analysis between macroinvertebrate community and key water quality driving factors was developed in the study, meanwhile, the aquatic ecosystem health conditions were evaluated and validated by different methods. The framework was applied to a typical urban river, the North Canal River, which is regarded as the "mother river" of Beijing. Combined with the redundancy analysis (RDA) and the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN), the water quality driving factors and their indicator species were identified and the corresponding response threshold was determined. Based on the benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI), the multi-metric rapid bioassessment method, and the biological monitoring working party (BMWP) score, the aquatic ecosystem health condition in the basin was comprehensively evaluated. The results show that fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen and total phosphorus were the key water quality driving factors influencing the community structure of macroinvertebrates. Four indicator species of ammonia-nitrogen were identified by the TITAN method with a threshold range of 1.09-6.94 mg L-1, and three indicator species of total phosphorus were identified with a threshold range of 0.48-1.27 mg L-1. According to the results of the aquatic ecosystem health assessment, the river ecosystem was generally unhealthy and the upstream was better than downstream; the health condition in the mountainous areas of Changping district was the best, while that in Chaoyang district and the central city area was the worst. The framework could provide a strong basis for ecological restoration and pollution control of the urban rivers and become an important tool for the rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystems.
