Characterization of Novel Klebsiella Phage PG14 and Its Antibiofilm Efficacy

Abstract:The increasing frequency of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae demands the development of unconventional therapies. Here, we isolated, characterized, and sequenced a Klebsiella phage PG14 that infects and lyses carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae G14. Phage PG14 showed morphology similar to the phages belonging to the family Siphoviridae. The adsorption curve of phage PG14 showed more than 90% adsorption of phages on a host within 12 min. A latent period of 20 min and a burst size of 47 was observed in the one step growth curve. Phage PG14 is stable at a temperature below 30°C and in the pH range of 6 to 8. The PG14 genome showed no putative genes associated with virulence and antibiotic resistance. Additionally, it has shown lysis against 6 out of 13 isolates tested, suggesting the suitability of this phage for therapeutic applications. Phage PG14 showed more than a 7-log cycle reduction in K. pneumoniae planktonic cells after 24 h of treatment at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 10. The phage PG14 showed a significant inhibition and disruption of biofilm produced by K. pneumoniae G14. The promising results of this study nominate phage PG14 as a potential candidate for phage therapy. IMPORTANCE Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the members of the ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) group of pathogens and is responsible for nosocomial infections. The global increase of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae has developed a substantial clinical threat because of the dearth of therapeutic choices available. K. pneumoniae is one of the commonly found bacteria responsible for biofilm-related infections. Due to the inherent tolerance of biofilms to antibiotics, there is a growing need to develop alternative strategies to control biofilm-associated infections. This study characterized a novel bacteriophage PG14, which can inhibit and disrupt the K. pneumoniae biofilm. The genome of phage PG14 does not show any putative genes related to antimicrobial resistance or virulence, making it a potential candidate for phage therapy. This study displays the possibility of treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates of K. pneumoniae using phage PG14 alone or combined with other therapeutic agents.
Bacteriophage treatment of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in a multispecies biofilm: a potential biocontrol strategy for healthcare facilities

Abstract:The p-traps of hospital handwashing sinks represent a potential reservoir for antimicrobial-resistant organisms of major public health concern, such as carbapenemase-producing KPC+ Klebsiella pneumoniae (CPKP). Bacteriophages have reemerged as potential biocontrol agents, particularly against biofilm-associated, drug-resistant microorganisms. The primary objective of our study was to formulate a phage cocktail capable of targeting a CPKP strain (CAV1016) at different stages of colonization within polymicrobial drinking water biofilms using a CDC biofilm reactor (CBR) p-trap model. A cocktail of four CAV1016 phages, all exhibiting depolymerase activity, were isolated from untreated wastewater using standard methods. Biofilms containing Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus luteus, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Elizabethkingia anophelis, Cupriavidus metallidurans, and Methylobacterium fujisawaense were established in the CBR p-trap model for a period of 28 d. Subsequently, CAV1016 was inoculated into the p-trap model and monitored over a period of 21 d. Biofilms were treated for 2 h at either 25 °C or 37 °C with the phage cocktail (109 PFU/ml) at 7, 14, and 21 d post-inoculation. The effect of phage treatment on the viability of biofilm-associated CAV1016 was determined by plate count on m-Endo LES agar. Biofilm heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) were determined using R2A agar. Phage titers were determined by plaque assay. Phage treatment reduced biofilm-associated CAV1016 viability by 1 log10 CFU/cm2 (p < 0.05) at 7 and 14 d (37 °C) and 1.4 log10 and 1.6 log10 CFU/cm2 (p < 0.05) at 7 and 14 d, respectively (25 °C). No significant reduction was observed at 21 d post-inoculation. Phage treatment had no significant effect on the biofilm HPCs (p > 0.05) at any time point or temperature. Supplementation with a non-ionic surfactant appears to enhance phage association within biofilms. The results of this study suggest the potential of phages to control CPKP and other carbapenemase-producing organisms associated with microbial biofilms in the healthcare environment.

Abstract:The common intestinal pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is one of the leading causes of fatal superbug infections that can resist the effects of commonly prescribed medicines. The uncontrolled use or misuse of antibiotics has increased the prevalence of drug-resistant K. pneumoniae strains in the environment. In the quest to search for alternative therapeutics for treating these drug-resistant infections, bacteriophages (bacterial viruses) emerged as potential candidates for in phage therapy against Klebsiella. The effective formulation of phage therapy against drug-resistant Klebsiella infections demands thorough characterization and screening of many bacteriophages. To contribute effectively to the formulation of successful phage therapy against superbug infections by K. pneumoniae, this study includes the isolation and characterization of a novel lytic bacteriophage MKP-1 to consider its potential to be used as therapeutics in treating drug-resistant Klebsiella infections. Morphologically, having a capsid attached to a long non-contractile tail, it was found to be a siphovirus that belongs to the class Caudoviricetes and showed infectivity against different strains of the target host bacterium. Comparatively, this double-stranded DNA phage has a large burst size and is quite stable in various physiological conditions. More interestingly, it has the potential to degrade the tough biofilms formed by K. pneumoniae (Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae (Schroeter) Trevisan [ATCC 15380]) significantly. Thus, the following study would contribute effectively to considering phage MKP-1 as a potential candidate for phage therapy against Klebsiella infection.

Abstract:Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) poses a significant clinical problem given the lack of therapeutic options available. Alternative antibacterial agents, such as bacteriophages, can be used as a valuable tool to treat the infections caused by these highly resistant bacteria. In this study, we isolated 54 phages from medical and domestic sewage wastewater between July and September 2019 and determined their host ranges against 54 clinical CRKP isolates, collected from a tertiary hospital in eastern China. The 54 CRKP isolates were from 7 sequence types (STs) and belonged to 9 capsular K locus types, harboring blaKPC–2 (n = 49), blaNDM–1 (n = 5), and blaIMP–4 (n = 3). Among them, the epidemic KPC-2-producing ST11 strains were most predominant (88.9%). The 54 phages showed different host ranges from 7 to 52 CRKP isolates. The total host ranges of three phages can potentially cover all 54 CRKP isolates. Among the 54 phages, phage P545, classified as a member of Myoviridaes, order Caudovirales, had a relatively wide host range (96.3%), a short latent period of 20 min, and a medium burst size of 82 PFU/cell and was stably maintained at different pH values (4–10) and temperatures (up to 60°C). P545 showed the ability to inhibit biofilm formation and to degrade the mature biofilms. Taken together, the results of our study showed that the newly isolated phage P545 had a relatively wide host range, excellent properties, and antibacterial activity as well as antibiofilm activity against a clinical CRKP ST11 isolate, providing a promising candidate for future phage therapy applications.

Abstract:The prevalence of risk behaviors in 933 intravenous drug users from Milan and other areas of Northern Italy was studied from 1 January 1987 to 15 April 1989. A preventive intervention, based on counseling with HIV antibody testing, was undertaken with i.v. drug users attending detoxication centers, and subjects were followed up in order to evaluate its effects. At enrollment all subjects reported heroin use, 18% also used cocaine and 6% morphine. Seventy-two per cent reported sharing or having shared syringes, with variation across geographical areas. Four hundred and sixty subjects were visited at least twice (mean follow-up was 10.4 months): 30% of these stopped injecting altogether and the frequency of injecting as well as of syringe sharing decreased whereas no improvement was seen in sexual behaviour. Detoxication therapy, combined with HIV testing and counseling proved effective in reducing heroin assumption and the frequency of syringe sharing, whereas the prevalence of risk behaviors in i.v. drug users at recruitment over the years 1987-1988 showed no change, or even increased, despite of general information and health education campaigns against AIDS.

Abstract:The increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a global health emergency and the need to explore alternative therapeutic options arises. Phage therapy uses bacteriophages to target specific bacterial strains. Phages are highly specific and can target resistant bacteria. Currently, research in this regard is focused on ensuring reliability and safety to bring this tool into clinical practice. The first step is to conduct comprehensive preclinical research. In this work, we present two novel bacteriophages vB_Kpn_F13 and vB_Kpn_F14 isolated against clinical carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains obtained from hospital sewage. Multiple studies in vitro were conducted, such as sequencing, electron microscopy, stability, host range infectivity, planktonic effect and biofilm inhibition in order to discover their ability to be used against carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae pathogens causing difficult-to-treat infections.

Abstract:The global health threat posed by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is exacerbated by the limited availability of effective treatments. Bacteriophages are promising alternatives to conventional antimicrobial agents. However, current phage databases are limited. Thus, identifying and characterizing new phages could provide biological options for the treatment of multi-drug resistant bacterial infections. Here, we report the characterization of a novel lytic phage, vB_KpnP_23, isolated from hospital sewage. This phage exhibited potent activity against carbapenemase-producing CRKP strains and was characterised by an icosahedral head, a retractable tail, and a genome comprising 40,987 base pairs, with a G + C content of 51 %. Capable of targeting and lysing nine different capsule types (K-types) of CRKP, including the clinically relevant ST11-K64, it demonstrated both high bacteriolytic efficiency and stability in various environmental contexts. Crucially, vB_KpnP_23 lacks virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance genes, or tRNA, aligning with the key criteria for therapeutic application. In vitro evaluation of phage-antibiotic combinations revealed a significant synergistic effect between vB_KpnP_23 and meropenem, levofloxacin, or amikacin. This synergy could lead to an 8-fold reduction in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), suggesting that integrated treatments combining this phage with the aforementioned antibiotics may substantially enhance drug effectiveness. This approach not only extends the clinical utility of these antibiotics but also presents a strategic advance in combating antibiotic resistance. Specifically, it underscores the potential of phage-antibiotic combinations as a powerful tool in the treatment of infections caused by CRKP, offering a promising avenue to mitigate the public health challenges of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Abstract:Multidrug‐resistant strains of Acinetobacter baumannii cause major nosocomial infections. Bacteriophages that are specific to the bacterial species and destroy bacteria can be effectively used for treatment. In this study, we characterized lytic bacteriophages specific to A. baumannii strains. We isolated lytic bacteriophages from environmental water samples and then investigated their morphology, host range, growth characteristics, stability, genome analysis, and biofilm destruction on the catheter surface. Our results showed that the efficacy of the phages varied between 32% and 78%, tested on 78 isolates of A. baumannii; 80 phages were isolated, and two lytic bacteriophages, vB_AbaP_HB01 (henceforth called C2 phage) and vB_AbaM_HB02 (henceforth called K3 phage), were selected for characterization. Electron microscopy scans revealed that the C2 and K3 phages were members of the Podoviridae and Myoviridae families, respectively. Whole‐genome sequencing revealed that the sequence of the C2 phage is available in the NCBI database (accession number: OP917929.1), and it was found sequence identity with Acinetobacter phage AB1 18%, the K3 phage DNA sequence is closely related to Acinetobacter phage vB_AbaM_phiAbaA1 (94% similarity). The cocktail of C2 and K3 phages demonstrated a promising decrease in the bacterial cell counts of the biofilm after 4 h. Under a scanning electron microscope, the cocktail treatment destructed the biofilm on the catheter. We propose that the phage cocktail could be a strong alternative to antibiotics to control the A. baumannii biofilm in catheter infections.

Abstract:Bacteriophages or bacteria infecting viruses are genetically diverse. Due to the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, lytic bacteriophages are gaining enormous attention for treating superbug infections. Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the eight most significant nosocomial pathogens and is addressed as a critical priority pathogen by WHO, requiring alternative treatment options. We reported two highly lytic bacteriophages, Klebsiella phage Kpn BM7 and the novel Klebsiella phage Kpn BU9, isolated from hospital wastewater and exhibiting lytic activity against different clinical isolates. Whole-genome analysis revealed that phages BM7 and BU9 belong to class Caudoviricetes. Phage BM7, with a genome length of 170,558 bp, is a member of the genus Marfavirus and the species Marfavirus F48 . While phage BU9, with a genome length of 60,450 bp, remains unclassified. Neither phage harbors any lysogenic, toxin, or antimicrobial resistance genes. Both phages can steadily survive up to 40 °C and at pH 5–7. The optimal MOI was 0.1 for BM7 and 1 for BU9, with short latent periods of 10 and 25 min and burst sizes of 85 PFU/cell and 12 PFU/cell, respectively. This is the first carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae targeting lytic phages to be reported from Bangladesh. This study suggests that BM7 and BU9 are potential candidates for targeting carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae.

Abstract:Five bacteriophages (Kpn5, Kpn12, Kpn13, Kpn17 and Kpn22), each having specificity against Klebsiella pneumoniae strain B5055, were isolated from sewage samples and characterized in terms of growth characteristics, genetic material, morphology and structural proteins. Adsorption rate as well as single step growth curve experiments showed variation among phages. Restriction enzyme digestion of DNA confirmed the presence of double stranded DNA as well as the heterogeneous nature of genetic material. RAPD-PCR was performed to further distinguish these closely related phages. Their genome fingerprint confirmed their diversity. Transmission electron microscopy, on the other hand, showed their morphological similarity; they were assigned to family Podoviridae, order Caudovirales on the basis of their head and tail morphology. Structural proteins resolved on SDS-PAGE showed the presence of similar major outer membrane proteins. The bacteriophages, belonging to Podoviridae family with short stumpy tails, were found to be nontoxic to mice. They showed maximum count in various organs at 6 h post inoculation, which persisted till 36 h. These phages thus have the potential to be used for phage therapy.

Two New Lytic Bacteriophages of the Myoviridae Family Against Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii

Abstract:Two lytic bacteriophages, WCHABP1 and WCHABP12, were recovered from hospital sewage and were able to infect 9 and 12 out of 18 carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains, which belonged to different clones. Electron microscopy scan showed that both bacteriophages had the similar morphology as those of the Myoviridae family. Whole genomic sequencing revealed 45.4- or 45.8-kb genome with a 37.6% GC content for WCHABP1 and WCHABP12, both of which showed significant DNA sequence similarity with bacteriophages of the Ap22virus genus within the Myoviridae family. Taxonomic analysis was therefore performed following the proposal approved by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, which confirmed that WCHABP1 and WCHABP12 represented two new species of the Ap22virus genus. No tRNAs but 88 and 89 open reading frames (ORFs) were predicted for the two bacteriophages, among which 22 and 21 had known function and encoded proteins for morphogenesis, packaging, lysis, and nucleiotide metabolism. The C-terminal amino acids of the large unit of fiber tail proteins varied between the bacteriophages, which may explain their different host ranges. For most lytic bacteriophages, a set of holin and endolysin are required for lysis. However, no known holin-encoding genes were identified in WCHABP1 and WCHABP12, suggesting that they may use alternative, yet-to-be-identified, novel holins for host cell membrane lysis. To test the efficacy of the bacteriophages in protecting against A. baumannii infection, a Galleria mellonella larva model was used. Only <20% G. mellonella larvae survived at 96 h after being infected by carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii strains, from which the two bacteriophages were recovered. With the administration of WCHABP1 and WCHABP12, the survival of larvae increased to 75%, while the treatment of polymyxin B only slightly increased the survival rate to 25%. The isolation of two new lytic bacteriophages in this study could expand our sight on Acinetobacter bacteriophages and may offer new potential therapeutic alternatives against A. baumannii.

Abstract:Objectives This study aimed to isolate a phage capable of lysing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) and to analyze its biological characteristics and whole genome sequence. Methods The phage was isolated and purified from the sewage. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to observe the bacteriophage's morphology. Phenotypic characterization of the bacteriophages were determined. The genomic information was analyzed. Evolutionary relationships were established through comparative genomics, proteomics, and phylogenetic analysis. Results The isolation of a virulent phage, named Klebsiella phage vB_KpnM_KpVB3, was notable for forming 6-7 mm transparent circular zones, each surrounded by a distinct halo. The phage had a head diameter of approximately 30 nm and a tail length of about 20 nm, being identified as a member of the Myoviridae family and the Caudovirales order. The optimal multiplicity of infection (MOI) was 0.00001, with an incubation period of 20 minutes and a lysis period of 60 minutes, and the number of released phages after lysis was 133±35 PFU/cell. The phage was relatively stable at temperatures ranging from 10 to 40°C and at pH values ranging from 3 to 11. Its lytic efficiency against CRKP was 30.30%. It has been shown to be able to destroy the biofilm of host bacteria. The bacteriophage genome consists of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) with a total length of 48,394 base pairs, a GC content of 48.99%, and 78 open reading frames (ORFs). Conclusion The study resulted in the isolation vB_KpnM_KpVB3, a phage demonstrating potential therapeutic efficacy against infections caused by CRKP.

Abstract:Klebsiella pneumoniae is a dominate cause of sever community-acquired and nosocomial infections, specifically among immunocompromised individuals. The increasing occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates has significantly impacted the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents. As we have entered the post antibiotic era, the use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections is becoming revitalized. Elucidating molecular details of phage-bacteria interactions will provide insights into phage biology and better development of phage therapies. In this study, a total of 22 non-duplicate K. pneumoniae isolates were assessed for their genetic and phenotypic relatedness by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), endonuclease S1 nuclease pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (S1-PFGE) and in vitro antibiotic susceptibility testing. Further, the beta-lactamase gene (blaKPC) was characterized to determine the spread and outbreak of K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing enterobacterial pathogens. Three phages were isolated and characterized to evaluate the application of lytic phages against these 22 ST11 K. pneumoniae isolates. In vitro inhibition assays demonstrated the lytic potential of three relatively broad host-range phages, imposing strong selections for phage-resistant mutants. Comparative genomic sequence analyses revealed that phage-resistant mutants harbored mutations in gene wcaJ, which is essential for the biosynthesis of colanic acid. Together, this data suggests that in vitro characterization of phage-host interactions adds more comprehensive knowledge to known anti-phage defense strategies and further emphasizes their complexity and future challenges to overcome prior to using phages for controlling this important MDR bacterium.
Characterization and complete genome analysis of Klebsiella phage Kp109 with lytic activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae

Abstract:Klebsiella pneumonia is a serious pathogen involved in a range of infections. The increasing frequency of infection associated with K. pneumoniae and accelerated development of antimicrobial resistance has limited the available options of antibiotics for the treatment of infection. Bacteriophages are an attractive substitute to alleviate the problem of antibiotic resistance. In this study, isolation, microbiological and genomic characterization of bacteriophage Kp109 having the ability to infect K. pneumoniae has been shown. Phage Kp109 showed good killing efficiency and tolerance to a broad range of temperatures (4–60 °C) and pH (3–9). Transmission electron microscopy and genomic analysis indicated that phage Kp109 belongs to the genus Webervirus and family Drexlerviridae . Genomic analysis showed that the Kp109 has a 51,630 bp long double-stranded DNA genome with a GC content of 51.64%. The absence of known lysogenic, virulence, and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in its genome makes phage Kp109 safer to be used as a biocontrol agent for different purposes including phage therapy. The computational analysis of the putative endolysin gene revealed a binding energy of − 6.23 kcal/mol between LysKp109 and ligand NAM-NAG showing its potential to be used as an enzybiotic. However, future research is required for experimental validation of the in silico work to further corroborate the results obtained in the present study. Overall, phenotypic, genomic, and computational characterization performed in the present study showed that phages Kp109 and LysKp109 are promising candidates for future in vivo studies and could potentially be used for controlling K. pneumoniae infection.

Abstract:The nonrecursiveness of an arithmetical set can be measured in at least two ways. One way is to consider the level of the set in the arithmetical hierarchy. Another is to consider the degree of unsolvability of the set; more precisely to look at the set of degrees recursive in the degree of the set. The Hierarchy Theorem [1] indicates a correspondence between these two ways of considering the nonrecursiveness of an arithmetical set. The results below indicate some of the contrasts between these two points of view. (It should perhaps be mentioned that, although the results are stated in terms of degrees and levels in the arithmetical hierarchy, they can also be stated, in view of the Hierarchy Theorem, strictly in terms of degrees.)

Abstract:Healthcare‐associated infection with "ESKAPE" pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) is a global health crisis due to their extensive intrinsic antibiotic resistance and the ability to quickly acquire resistance determinants. Alternative treatment options are required to combat this crisis, and one possibility is the use of bacteriophages, or viruses that strictly infect the pathogenic bacteria. Currently, there is a renaissance in research and development into the use of phages to target multi‐, extensively, and pan‐resistant bacterial infections in humans, known as phage therapy. Using A. baumannii as an example, this article describes the isolation and purification of bacteriophages from sewage and soil samples, as well as general methods used in phage research such as precipitation of phages using polyethylene glycol, host range analysis, single‐cell burst size determination, DNA extraction, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. © 2022 National Research Council Canada. Abstract:Objective: Carbapenem-colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae has emerged as a serious global problem. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a major culprit in healthcare settings and is responsible for septicemia, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, meningitis, burn wound and surgical site infections, and liver abscesses even in younger and healthier population worldwide. The formation of biofilm prevents antibiotics from reaching the bacteria and exerting their effector mechanism. The non-availability of therapeutic alternatives (antibiotic therapy) further complicates the scenario. However, in the era of antibiotic resistance, bacteriophage therapy emerges as a ray of hope against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Method: The present review focuses on the therapeutic potential of bacteriophages as an antimicrobial agent with special reference to safety, specificity, efficacy, dosage, and dosage frequency against Pan-Drug Resistant (PDR) K. pneumoniae, both in-vitro and in-vivo (animals and human) studies. Result: This review highlights the perspectives therapeutic potential of bacteriophages, their impact on the host immune system, combination therapy, and bacteriophage-encoded gene product endolysin, artificial lysins (Artilysins), polysaccharide depolymerase, and peptidoglycan hydrolases. Conclusion: This review briefly describes the application of bacteriophage and its encoded gene products in clinical trials.
Characterization of four virulent Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteriophages, and evaluation of their potential use in complex phage preparation

Abstract:Background: Nowadays, hundreds of thousands of deaths per year are caused by antibiotic resistant nosocomial infections and the prognosis for future years is much worse, as evidenced by modern research. Bacteria of the Klebsiella genus are one of the main pathogens that cause nosocomial infections. Among the many antimicrobials offered to replace or supplement traditional antibiotics, bacteriophages are promising candidates. Methods: This article presents microbiological, physicochemical and genomic characterization of 4 virulent bacteriophages belonging to Siphoviridae, Myoviridae and Podoviridae families. Phages were studied by electron microscopy; their host range, lytic activity, adsorption rate, burst size, latent period, frequency of phage-resistant forms generation, lysis dynamics and sensitivity of phage particles to temperature and pH were identified; genomes of all 4 bacteriophages were studied by restriction digestion and complete genome sequence. Results: Studied phages showed wide host range and high stability at different temperature and pH values. In contrast with single phages, a cocktail of bacteriophages lysed all studied bacterial strains, moreover, no cases of the emergence of phage-resistant bacterial colonies were detected. Genomic data proved that isolated viruses do not carry antibiotic resistance, virulence or lysogenic genes. Three out of four bacteriophages encode polysaccharide depolymerases, which are involved in the degradation of biofilms and capsules. Conclusions: The bacteriophages studied in this work are promising for further in vivo studies and might be used in phage therapy as part of a complex therapeutic and prophylactic phage preparation. The conducted studies showed that the complex preparation is more effective than individual phages. The use of the complex phage cocktail allows to extend the lytic spectrum, and significantly reduces the possibility of phage-resistant forms generation.
