Abstract:Interacting with nature may promote mental and physical health. There are multiple ways to interact with nature: indirectly, incidentally, and intentionally. How these types of interactions with nature may be associated with mental and physical health status and health behaviors is unclear. The purpose of this narrative review is to (1) describe the relationship between interactions with nature (indirect, incidental, and intentional) and mental and physical health outcomes and behaviors, (2) identify gaps in the literature, and (3) provide recommendations for future research. Considerable evidence suggests that interacting with nature, indirectly and intentionally, is associated with improvements in mental health and physical exhibitions of mental status. Furthermore, intentionally interacting with nature is associated with engagement in physical activity and gardening is associated with fruit and vegetable consumption. Research suggests that incidentally interacting with nature may be associated with positive mental health status. More research is needed to understand the relationships between incidental interactions with nature and physical health status and behaviors; as well as among all types of interactions with nature and physical health disorders, sleep, and dietary behaviors.
Experiencing nature leads to healthier food choices

Abstract:Experiencing nature has been linked to a host of benefits for health and well-being. Here, we examine if exposure to nature influences the food choices that may contribute to nature's benefits. Five between-subject experiments (n = 39, n = 698, n = 885, n = 1191, and n = 913) show that individuals exposed to the natural environment choose healthier foods when compared to those exposed to urban environments or a control condition. Nature's effects are observed for various foods and beverages, across samples from three countries, and in varied contexts, such as taking a walk in a park (vs. a city street) and looking at photos of nature (vs. urban or control) scenes. These findings provide insights into the relationship between proximity to nature and health.
Developing a new tool to capture the nature dose to reduce loneliness and improve quality of life

Abstract:Recognition of the health benefits of nature contact has increased. Simultaneously, growing numbers of people worldwide experience loneliness. There is a movement towards prescribing nature-based activities to improve/promote social connections, health, and quality of life. Yet, what constitutes a therapeutic nature dose is not well understood, due in part, to the lack of instruments that capture the characteristics of nature-based activities and measure 'nature dose.' We created a nature dose measurement tool to fill this gap by capturing various aspects of contact with nature and perceptions regarding park access, quality, naturalness, psychological distance to nature, and biodiversity. This tool will facilitate greater understanding of how natural areas, nature-based activities, and nature exposure reduce loneliness and promote health-related quality of life. Measuring nature dose with standardized tools and documenting benefits will generate the evidence base needed to design, implement and evaluate nature-based social interventions for improving health and quality of life.•This tool captures the nature dose to reduce loneliness and promote quality of life.•Constructs range from park quality and access, to mood, to biodiversity perceptions.•The standardized nature dose tool will help design nature-based social interventions.
Using nature-based citizen science initiatives to enhance nature connection and mental health.

Abstract:The global rise in mental health issues underscores the critical importance of assessing the mental health benefits of engaging with nature. Beyond their primary aim of involving citizens in scientific data collection, nature-based citizen science initiatives offer significant potential for enhancing conservation (e.g. connection to nature) and human health and wellbeing (e.g. emotions, depression, stress, anxiety) outcomes. However, the effectiveness of various types of initiatives in achieving specific health outcomes remain unclear. This study evaluates changes in eight nature connection and health and wellbeing outcomes before and after participation in five such initiatives, specifically three dimensions of connection to nature (Self, Experience and Perspective) measured by the Nature Relatedness scale), and mental health outcomes, depression, stress and anxiety, measured by the DASS21 scale; along with positive and negative emotions assessed using the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE). We found that participants generally reported improvements across all outcomes, but only positive emotions and reduced anxiety and stress symptoms were significantly enhanced. This suggests that short-term nature-based interventions are effective in boosting emotions and alleviating anxiety and stress, though significant changes in nature connection and depression may require prolonged or more intensive engagement. We also found that the Queensland Trust for Nature initiative, characterized by its extended duration and social interactions, emerged as a particularly effective model in achieving synergies between biodiversity and human health goals. Consequently, we advocate for the reimagining of these nature-based initiatives as integral components of broader health-promoting strategies. By aligning citizen science efforts with health promotion frameworks, we can amplify the utility and impact of nature-based citizen science initiatives, enhancing their contributions to scientific knowledge, nature conservation and human health.

Personal Prioritization of Healthy Eating among Chinese Adults and Its Association with Dietary Behaviors: Findings from the China Health and Nutrition Survey

Abstract:Objective: China faces a growing non-communicable disease (NCD) burden linked with diet. The link between attitudes towards healthy diets and specific eating behaviors has been underexplored in Chinese settings. The aim of this study is to evaluate disparities in personal healthy eating prioritization among Chinese adults and its association with specific dietary patterns. Methods: Data from the 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) was used to examine healthy eating prioritization (how important “eating a healthy diet” was to participants) and its association with socio-demographic, interpersonal, and physical health variables, along with plant-based and healthy eating dietary patterns, and consumption of specific food groups. Results: Of the 13,653 participants with healthy eating prioritization data, 94% believed eating a healthy diet to be important. Odds of believe healthy eating to not be important was negatively associated with increased age (AOR:0.98, 95%CI:0.98-0.99), higher educational attainment (AOR:0.12, 95%CI: 0.07-0.19), living in urban environments (AOR:0.76, 95%CI:0.63-0.83), living with both parents (AOR:0.69, 95%CI:0.48-0.98), and past diagnosis of NCDs (AOR:0.76, 95%CI:0.59-0.96). Men and those who were single had higher odds of believing eating a healthy to not be important (AOR:1.36, 95%CI:1.08-1.71; AOR:1.36, 95%CI:1.08-1.71). Compared to those who believed eating a healthy diet to be important, those who did not had a lower odds of higher vegetable intake (AOR:0.77, 95%CI:0.62-0.96) and higher meat intake (AOR:0.80, 95%CI:0.63-1.00). Conclusion: Findings provide novel insights on how interventional and observational dietary attitude research in China may need to explore the unique role vegetable and meat intake play in the diet attitude-behavior link.

Abstract:Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) account for up to 12% of the hospice population and often experience significant symptoms related to volume overload. Diuretic therapy is the cornerstone of treatment but administration (PO) often becomes ineffective and (IV, IM) routes cause discomfort or may not be feasible to ameliorate symptoms. Subcutaneous dosing of furosemide has been explored as a potential alternative for management of CHF symptoms. We report 2 cases of CHF resistant to oral diuretic and examine the clinical utility of subcutaneous furosemide in an inpatient palliative care unit and a home hospice setting. Our case series supports the use of subcutaneous therapy as a potential alternative in palliative care and hospice patients.

Abstract:The benefits of exposure to nature for health and wellbeing have been demonstrated across multiple disciplines. Recent work has sought to establish one “dose” or type of nature exposure that is universally beneficial, which has proven difficult. We use the principles of psychopharmacology to look beyond the use of dose as a concept for prescribing nature. Instead, we posit a multidimensional model of bioavailability of nature to shift the focus beyond universal effects, and instead consider the relationship between health and nature as dynamic, changeable, and heavily contextual. We propose that the bioavailability of nature interactions is constructed through understanding route of administration, dose, and concentration. By delineating the mechanisms of health benefit derived from the type of behavioural interaction (through being, doing, living), the route of administration of nature interactions may be highly variable not just between, but also within, individuals. We propose concentration as being a meeting between the subjective aspects of the individual and the subjective qualities of the nature at that specific time and place. We use a “green equation”, for mapping the processes and pathways that belie the interaction between the person and their environment. Here, the nature/health association as a dynamic interaction, and we operationalise this within a multidimensional construct of bioavailability. We provide an overview of this testable model, and summarise with preliminary evidence as well as a research agenda for the future.

Abstract:Connectedness with nature benefits not only human health and well-being, but also our engagement with and taking action for nature. Despite the importance of nature in everyday life, we are increasingly disconnected from nature. Consequently, the calls to reconnect with nature are increasingly loud, but how can we reconnect with nature in the midst of a busy (urban) life? In order to answer this question, we sought to contribute to understanding how people express their connectedness with nature in different contexts and how this can be strengthened through multiple pathways. To do so we used a mixed-methods approach to evaluate, with the use of leverage points, the experiences of people who participated in the Earthfulness program, a 21-day challenge with exercises to strengthen their connectedness with nature in everyday life. Earthfulness participants already felt a relatively strong connectedness with nature at the start of the challenge, and they sought ways to solidify, sustain, express, and enrich that connectedness. By participating in the challenge, people experienced a stronger connectedness with nature, expressed more dimensions of connectedness with nature, and indicated an increased willingness to act for nature. Participants identified gratitude, a reciprocal relationship with nature, and humility as drivers of their willingness to act for nature. We conclude that there are various pathways to strengthen connectedness and that leverage points represent a useful lens through which to study, understand, and implement this diversity.

Abstract:The influence of environmental attitudes on environmental behaviors has long been discussed. However, few studies have addressed the foundation of such attitudes. In the present study, we explored primitive belief underlying environmental attitudes, i.e., connections with nature, and its relationship with pro-environmental behaviors. Specifically, we used scales, a computerized Implicit Association Test, and a situational simulation experiment to examine both explicit and implicit connections with nature, both deliberate and spontaneous environmental behaviors, and to find correlations between environmental connectedness and environmental behaviors. Results showed that explicit connectedness was positively correlated with deliberate environmental behaviors, while implicit connectedness was positively correlated with spontaneous environmental behaviors. Additionally, explicit and implicit connectedness was independent of each other. In conclusion, the current study confirms the positive role played by connections with nature in promoting environmental behavior, and accordingly suggests means to encourage pro-environmental behavior by enhancing people's connectedness to nature.

Abstract:In the United States, typical dietary patterns are not necessarily healthy and sustainable. In order to shift diets, we need to provide support to individuals in a way that reflects what matters most to them. In this study, we aimed to identify the considerations that are most important to individuals regarding food-related decisions, and to determine how those considerations relate to specific foods, with a focus on health and environmental sustainability. In a sequential mixed-methods design, we first conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with participants in California and Nebraska. These interviews included a free-listing activity, where we used a technical construct of salience, Smith's S Index, to identify the considerations that were most important to our participants. We followed up with 20 of those participants to complete a pile-sorting survey, where participants sorted and rated 42 food items for price, taste, health, convenience, familiarity, and environmental impact. Our findings showed that the most salient considerations cited by our participants were price, health, taste, and time. There was consensus for how participants rated the foods for price, taste, convenience, and familiarity. However, there was only weak consensus for how participants rated the foods for health impact, and no consensus for how participants rated the foods for environmental impact. There was also disagreement on how to sort new plant-based products intended to replace or substitute meat and other animal-based foods. These findings have implications for how to communicate about healthy and sustainable diets. They highlight conflicting considerations, disagreement in classification of new products, and limited consensus for perceived health and environmental impact of foods, which present challenges to the achievement of diets that are healthy and environmentally sustainable in the United States.

Nature Connection and 360-Degree Video: An Exploratory Study With Immersive Technology

Abstract:Background: Immersive technologies may be an avenue to explore the construct of human–nature connection more thoroughly and without some of the obstacles to accessing nature in-person. Purpose: The aim of this project was to discover if self-exposure to immersive virtual nature can lead to any change in nature connectedness. Methodology/Approach: Participants were recruited from the Texas State University campus and randomized into three experimental conditions: a filmed library or nature experience, and an in-nature experience. 360-degree videos of a nature preserve and the university library were projected within a head-mounted display in a laboratory setting. Results of pre- and postsurvey data were compared between experimental groups. Findings/Conclusions: Pairwise comparisons with the Nature Relatedness Scale indicated that participants in the in-nature experience reported significantly stronger beliefs about their connection to nature than those in either virtual condition. With respect to the State of Independence with Nature Scale, planned pairwise comparisons indicated that between participants in the in-nature experience and the virtual nature experience did not differ. Implications: This study suggests that to connect with nature, one should spend time there. In addition, here data support that a virtual immersive nature experience can affect a state-dependent measurement of nature connection, and even equal that of an in-nature experience.
Perceptions of Knowledge and Experience in Nature-Based Health Interventions

Abstract:Although perceptions and uses vary, nature-based health interventions (NBHIs) help facilitate the additional health benefits of physical activity (PA) experienced in nature, thereby reducing all-cause morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this mixed-methods, cross-sectional study was to better understand perceptions, terminology, and participation in NBHIs. A questionnaire was developed by reviewing validated instruments and gauging expert experience with stakeholders. Distributed electronically, a community partner listserv promoting active living served as the population. Quantitative questionnaire measures assessed familiarity with NBHI terms, concepts, experience, how NBHI should be used, and the importance of NBHI components. Qualitative themes included the strengths and weaknesses of NBHIs. Participants (n = 53) were familiar with the terms nature play (82%), forest bathing (78%), and park and nature prescriptions (74%) and moderately familiar with NBHIs (5-point Likert scale, M = 3.27, SD = 1.17). Most thought NBHIs could be useful in treating physical (96%) and mental health conditions (100%) and would follow or write one (80%). The location was reported as the most important component, followed by access, social comfort, dosage, and ongoing support. This study suggests stakeholders are familiar with and support NBHIs conceptually; however, policies, support, and funding opportunities are needed to operationalize components to increase use of NBHIs.
Mindfully green: Examining the effect of connectedness to nature on the relationship between mindfulness and engagement in pro-environmental behavior

Abstract:Mindfulness reflects heightened awareness and attention to the present moment, in both experience and behavior. Research has begun to examine mindfulness in the domain of pro-environmental behavior, and documents positive relationships with connectedness to nature, and engagement in pro-environmental behavior. Two independent studies with two different samples were conducted to test the study hypotheses. It was hypothesized that mindfulness would be significantly correlated with self-reported pro-environmental behavior (Hypothesis 1) and that that connectedness to nature indirectly affects the relationship between mindfulness and pro-environmental behavior (Hypothesis 2). Participants completed measures of mindfulness across five facets, connectedness to nature, and their engagement in 17 daily pro-environmental behaviors. Results support Hypothesis 1 in that mindfulness is significantly associated with pro-environmental behavior (Studies 1 and 2). Results also support Hypothesis 2 in that connectedness to nature indirectly affects the relationship between mindfulness and pro-environmental behavior (Studies 1 and 2). Post hoc analyses reveal that the facets of observing and nonreactivity are particularly important in the context of pro-environmental behavior (Study 2). We discuss these findings as they relate to the conceptualization of mindfulness as a means of behavioral regulation.

Abstract:Introduction: The global rise of urbanization has much triggered scientific interest in how nature impacts on human health. Natural environments, such as alpine landscapes, forests, or urban green spaces, are potential high-impact health resources. While there is a growing body of evidence to reveal a positive influence of these natural environments on human health and well-being, further investigations guided by rigorous evidence-based medical research are very much needed. Objective: The present study protocol aims at testing research methodologies in the context of a prospective clinical trial on nature-based interventions. This shall improve the standards of medical research in human–nature interactions. Methods: The ANKER Study investigates the influence of two novel types of nature-based therapy—mountain hiking and forest therapy—on physiological, psychological, and immunological parameters of couples with a sedentary lifestyle. Two intervention groups were formed and spent a seven-day holiday in Algund, Italy. The “forest therapy group” participated in daily guided low-power nature connection activities. The “hiking group”, by contrast, joined in a daily moderate hiking program. Health-related quality of life and relationship quality are defined as primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes include nature connection, balance, cardio-respiratory fitness, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, body composition and skin hydration. Furthermore, a new approach to measure health-related quality of life is validated. The so-called “intercultural quality of life” comic assesses the health-related quality of life with a digitally animated comic-based tool.
Beyond knowing nature: Contact, emotion, compassion, meaning, and beauty are pathways to nature connection

Abstract:Feeling connected to nature has been shown to be beneficial to wellbeing and pro-environmental behaviour. General nature contact and knowledge based activities are often used in an attempt to engage people with nature. However the specific routes to nature connectedness have not been examined systematically. Two online surveys (total n = 321) of engagement with, and value of, nature activities structured around the nine values of the Biophila Hypothesis were conducted. Contact, emotion, meaning, and compassion, with the latter mediated by engagement with natural beauty, were predictors of connection with nature, yet knowledge based activities were not. In a third study (n = 72), a walking intervention with activities operationalising the identified predictors, was found to significantly increase connection to nature when compared to walking in nature alone or walking in and engaging with the built environment. The findings indicate that contact, emotion, meaning, compassion, and beauty are pathways for improving nature connectedness. The pathways also provide alternative values and frames to the traditional knowledge and identification routes often used by organisations when engaging the public with nature.

Abstract:Ecotherapy and nature-based interventions have been shown to be evidence-based treatment for physical and mental health. The rekindling of relationships between humans and nature helps cultivate a bi-directional, reciprocal circle of healing. The resulting benefit is the increased well-being of individuals, society, and the Earth. This study is a metaanalytic review of 13 articles (22 studies) examining the relationship between connection to nature and various domains of well-being, including emotional, psychological, social, and overall well-being. The eligibility criteria for this study were the inclusion of at least one measure of connectedness to nature, one measure of well-being or life satisfaction, and a quantitative measure of their relationship. This meta-analysis combined quantitative results from multiple studies to summarize the empirical knowledge on the relationship between connection to nature and well-being/life satisfaction. A random-effects model was used to find one common effect size, showing the overall magnitude of the relationship among these variables. The results yielded moderate to large effect sizes, revealing a positive relationship between connectedness to nature and the various domains of well-being. The findings have valuable implications, highlighting the imperative necessity to reconnect and heal our relationship with the earth in order to embrace embodiment, to advocate for social justice for a more inclusive and equitable world, and to cultivate holistic health and healing.
Nature as Medicine and Classroom: Evaluating an Innovative, Outdoor Course for Medical and Dental Students

Abstract:Background: There is a growing, global awareness and recognition of the important, interdependent relationships between our natural world and human health. Several contemporary health organizations have placed calls to action and emphasize an urgent need for collaboration and interdisciplinary research, education, and clinical work to address the increasing degradation of our planetary and human health. With more research dedicated to nature's health impacts, health professions schools would benefit by including such training in their programs while also cultivating a comprehensive mind-body health perspective to support both the health of student practitioners and their future patients. Objective: The present program evaluation investigates a five-day outdoor mini-course covering nature-based health techniques at a medical and dental school in the American Northeast. This unique outdoor course combines nature, creativity, and reflection within the context of modern medicine. Methods: A concurrent mixed-method design using descriptive statistics, quantitative and qualitative data from students' anonymous final course evaluations and final reflection projects are evaluated. Results: Data suggests that students benefitted from their experience during this five-day course. Students provided feedback reinforcing the enjoyment and transformative outcomes gleaned from the course experiences. Students entered the course describing feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and overextended, not uncommon for learners in medical and dental school, and completed the course describing the acquisition of applicable skills, increased attention and mindfulness, creativity, and connection to the natural world. Conclusions: Students described a positive experience of the course. Several areas of personal and professional development were also described, such as improvements within cognitive domains, enhanced connection with nature, others, and themselves, increased mindfulness, and overall improved well-being. Findings have implications for medical and dental programs on how such innovative training may lean into the work of nature-based care to provide for the whole person.

Abstract:Previous research has found that nature connectedness, an experiential close connection to nature with cognitive, affective and physical benefits, profoundly impacts individual wellbeing and subsequently increases pro-environmental behaviors. However, little is known about the personal and contextual factors that predict nature connectedness. Testing theory derived from a qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis study, this research addresses the lacuna in the literature. A structural equation model analysis finds that interoceptive awareness significantly predicts nature connection, that secure attachment to nature significantly explains this relationship, and that these inter-related constructs predict both pro-environmental behavior and wellbeing. This revised model of nature connection indicates important antecedents for the human-nature bond, illuminating in particular that the interpersonal relational processes foundational for close bonding with humans also occur in bonding with nature. Structural equation modeling indicates that emotional awareness is the dimension of interoceptive awareness that most significantly predicts nature connection, suggesting that the more aware a person is of the connection between inner bodily sensations and emotions, the more likely they can bond with nature. Given that interoceptive awareness indicates a coherent relationship with the self, including effective communication between body, mind and feelings, this process is therefore implicated in the capacity for humans to bond with nature. In sum, this present research points to the efficacy of an embodied, secure attachment with nature to help close both the human-nature disconnection chasm, and the environmental value-action gap. Theoretical and methodological implications for research and policy are discussed.
