Abstract:The effective exploitation of natural products is of great significance. Herein the essential oil from Herba Artimisiae Sieversianae in growth period and flower/fruit bearing period was extracted by ethanol extraction method. The optimal extraction condition was determined by orthogonal experiment, including extracting 3 times, soaking for 90 min, and the ratios of liquid to solid for Herba Artimisiae Sieversianae in growth period and flower/fruit bearing period were 10 mL : 1 g and 8 mL : 1 g, respectively. The main components of the products were confirmed by FT-IR and GC-MS, which were cineole, camphor, d-borneol, caryophyllene, cadina-1, 4-diene, calamenene, ethyl palmitate, etc. in herba artimisiae sieversianae in growth period, and camphor, caryophyllene, borneol, neryl formate, etc. in Herba Artimisiae Sieversianae in flower/fruit bearing period. The radical scavenging activity of the products was determined. The results showed that the IC50 values of the essential oil from Herba Artimisiae Sieversianae in growth period and flower/fruit bearing period for 0.05 mmol/L DPPH solution were 0.40 mg/mL and 1.66 mg/mL, respectively. The essential oil extracted by ethanol from Herba Artimisiae Sieversianae was confirmed to possess good antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Epilobium angustifolium L. is a popular and well-known medicinal plant. In this study, an attempt to evaluate the possibility of using this plant in preparations for the care and treatment of skin diseases was made. The antioxidant, antiaging and anti-inflammatory properties of ethanolic extracts from Epilobium angustifolium (FEE) were assessed. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of extracts chemically composition was performed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total polyphenol content (TPC) of biologically active compounds, such as the total content of polyphenols (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), and assimilation pigments, as well as selected phenolic acids, was assessed. FEE was evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and antiaging properties, achieving 68% inhibition of lipoxygenase activity, 60% of collagenase and 49% of elastase. FEE also showed high antioxidant activity, reaching to 87% of free radical scavenging using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 59% using 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS). Additionally, in vitro penetration studies were performed using two vehicles, i.e., a hydrogel and an emulsion containing FEE. These studies showed that the active ingredients contained in FEE penetrate through human skin and accumulate in it. The obtained results indicate that E. angustifolium may be an interesting plant material to be applied as a component of cosmetic and dermatological preparations with antiaging and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract:Extensive use of α-pinene in cosmetics, and medicine, especially for its antioxidant/antibacterial, and anti-cancer properties, and also as a flavoring agent, has made it a versatile product. α-Pinene (one of the two pinene isomers) is the most abundant terpene in nature. When extracting α-pinene from plants and, to a lesser extent, fruits, given that its purity is essential, purification methods should also be used as described in this study. Also, an attempt has been made to describe the extraction techniques of α-pinene, carried out by conventional and novel methods. Some disadvantages of conventional methods (such as hydrodistillation or solvent extraction) are being time consuming, low capacity per batch and being labor intensive and the requirement of trained operators. Most novel methods, such as supercritical fluid extraction and microwave-assisted extraction, can reduce the extraction time, cost, and energy compared to conventional methods, and, in fact, the extraction and preservation efficiency of α-pinene in these methods is higher than conventional methods. Although the above-mentioned extraction methods are effective, they still require rather long extraction times. In fact, advanced methods such as green and solvent-free ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction are much more efficient than microwave-assisted extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction because the extraction efficiency and separation of α-pinene in these methods are higher; furthermore, no solvent consumption and maximum extraction efficiency are some crucial advantages of these techniques. However, the application of some novel methods, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction, in industry scale is still problematic because of their intricate design data.

Optimization of Bioactive Phenolics Extraction and Cosmeceutical Activity of Eco-Friendly Polypropylene-Glycol–Lactic-Acid-Based Extracts of Olive Leaf

Abstract:Olive leaf is a rich source of phenolic compounds with numerous activities related to skin health and appearance. In this study, a green extraction method was developed using eco-friendly solvents: polypropylene glycol (PPG), lactic acid (LA), and water. The optimal extraction conditions were established, including solvent, extraction time, technique (magnetic stirrer vs. ultrasound-assisted extraction), and herbal material/solvent ratio. The composition of the solvent mixture was optimized using a mixture design. The content of phenolic compounds, including oleuropein and verbascoside, was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometric methods. Using different extraction conditions, three extracts were prepared and their phytochemical compositions and antioxidant and skin-related bioactivities were investigated. The extracts were excellent inhibitors of elastase, collagenase, tyrosinase, and lipoxygenase. The best activity was shown by the extract richest in phenolics and prepared using magnetic-stirrer-assisted extraction for 20 min, with 0.8 g of herbal material extracted in 10 mL of PPG/LA/water mixture (28.6/63.6/7.8, w/w/w), closely followed by the extract prepared using the same extraction conditions but with 0.42 g of herbal material. The investigated PPG/LA/water mixtures contributed to the overall enzyme-inhibitory activity of the extracts. The prepared extracts were appropriate for direct use in cosmetic products, thus saving the time and energy consumption necessary for the evaporation of conventional solvents.

Abstract:Plant extracts are a source of valuable ingredients that can be used in many industries. This paper presents research on the content of selected bioactive compounds in extracts obtained from various plant materials. Raw materials have a documented use in traditional medicine not only in Poland. The tested plants were: bitter melon (fruit), elderberry (flowers, fruit, leaves), wild rose (fruit, flesh, seeds), mountain ash (fruit), guelder rose (fruit), and sea buckthorn (fruit, leaves, pomace). The main goal of these tests is to indicate the potential raw materials that may constitute an alternative source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity. The plant material was tested for the content of bioactive antioxidant compounds and possible antimicrobial activity. The content of polyphenols (phenolic acids and flavonoids) was analyzed using UPLC/PDA, sterols, organic acids, and other bioactive compounds. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. The total free phenolic acids (TPC) and total free flavonoids (TFC) of all plant raw materials was varied and ranged from 0.21 (mg RUTE/1 g of extract) to 38.30 mg RUTE/1 g of extract) for TFC. The concentration of sterols was, on average, about 10 mg/1 g of extract. The value of approx. 20 mg/1 g of the extract was recorded for bitter melon and beach rose. The content of organic acids was about 1.5 mg/1 g of the extract to even 13 mg/1 g of the extract for sea buckthorn berries. The most sensitive to the extracts' activity were the following bacteria: M. luteus, P. mirabilis, P. fragii, S. enteritidis, and E. coli. The tested plant materials can be used in various industries as a source of bioactive compounds of an antibacterial nature.
Phytochemistry and Biological Activities of Essential Oils from Six Aromatic Medicinal Plants with Cosmetic Properties

Abstract:In this work, the chemical composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils (EOs) of six species—Laurus nobilis, Chamaemelum nobile, Citrus aurantium, Pistacia lentiscus, Cedrus atlantica, and Rosa damascena—have been studied. Phytochemical screening of these plants revealed the presence of primary metabolites, namely, lipids, proteins, reducing sugars, and polysaccharides, and also secondary metabolites such as tannins, flavonoids, and mucilages. The essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The yields are between 0.06 and 4.78% (mL/100 g). The analysis of the chemical composition carried out by GC-MS showed the presence of 30 to 35 compounds and represent between 99.97% and 100% of the total composition of EOs, with a variation in the chemical composition detected at the level of the majority compounds between these species. Indeed, in the EO of Laurus nobilis, 1,8-cineole (36.58%) is the major component. In Chamaemelum nobile EO, the most abundant compound is angelylangelate (41.79%). The EO of Citrus aurantium is rich in linalool (29.01%). The EO of Pistacia lentiscus is dominated by 3-methylpentylangelate (27.83%). The main compound of Cedrus atlantica is β-himachalene (40.19%), while the EO of Rosa damascenaa flowers is rich in n-nonadecane (44.89%). The analysis of the similarity between the EOs of the plants studied by ACH and ACP showed that the chemical composition of the EOs makes it possible to separate these plants into three groups: the first represented by Chamaemelum nobile, because it is rich in oxygenated monoterpenes, the second defined Cedrus atlantica and Rosa damascena, which are rich in sesquiterpenes, and the third gathers Pistacia lentiscus, Laurus nobilis and Citrus aurantium, which are composed of oxygenated sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes (these three species are very close). The study of the antioxidant activity showed that all the EOs tested have a high capacity for scavenging free radicals from DPPH. The EOs of Laurus nobilis and Pistacia lentiscus showed the highest activity, 76.84% and 71.53%, respectively, followed by Cedrus atlantica EO (62.38%) and Chamaemelum nobile (47.98%) then Citrus aurantium EO (14.70%). Antimicrobial activity EO was tested against eight bacterial strains and eight fungal strains; the results showed that EOs exhibit significant bactericidal and fungicidal activities against all the microorganisms tested, of which the MICs of the bacterial strains start with 5 mg/mL, while the MICs of the fungal strains are between 0.60 mg/mL and 5 mg/mL. Thus, these EOs rich in antimicrobial and antioxidant components can serve as a natural alternative; this confirms their use as additives in cosmetics.

Abstract:Although the major components of various organs of sea buckthorn have been identified (particularly phenolic compounds), biological properties of many of these phytochemicals still remain poorly characterized. In this study, we focused on the chemical composition and biological activity of preparations that were obtained from sea buckthorn twigs and leaves. The objective was to investigate cytotoxicity of these preparations against human fibroblast line HFF-1, using MTT reduction assay, their anti- or pro-oxidant activities against the effects of a biological oxidant -H2O2/Fe-on human plasma lipids and proteins in vitro (using TBARS and carbonyl groups as the markers of oxidative stress). Antimicrobial activity of the tested preparations against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), as well as against fungi (Candida albicans, C. glabrata) by the EUCAST-approved broth microdilution method, followed by growth on solid media, were also assessed. Our analysis showed significant differences in chemical composition and biological properties of the tested preparations (A-F). All tested preparations from sea buckthorn twigs (D-F) and one preparation from sea buckthorn leaves (preparation C) may be a new source of phenolic antioxidants for pharmacological and cosmetic applications.
N1‐Methyl‐2‐125I‐Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, a Preferred Ligand for In Vitro and In Vivo Characterization of Serotonin Receptors

Abstract:Abstract: Methylation of 2‐125I‐lysergic acid diethylamide (125I‐LSD) at the N1 position produces a new derivative, N1‐methyl‐2‐125I‐lysergic acid diethylamide (125I‐MIL), with improved selectivity and higher affinity for serotonin 5‐HT2 receptors. In rat frontal cortex homogenates, specific binding of 125I‐MIL represents 80–90% of total binding, and the apparent dissociation constant (KD) for serotonin 5‐HT2 receptors is 0.14 nM (using 2 mg of tissue/ml). 125I‐MIL also displays a high affinity for serotonin 5‐HT1C receptors, with an apparent dissociation constant of 0.41 nM at this site. 125I‐MIL exhibits at least 60‐fold higher affinity for serotonin 5‐HT2 receptors than for other classes of neurotransmitter receptors, with the dopamine D2 receptor as its most potent secondary binding site. Studies of the association and dissociation kinetics of 125I‐MIL reveal a strong temperature dependence, with very slow association and dissociation rates at 0°C. Autoradiographic experiments confirm the improved specificity of 125I‐MIL. Selective labeling of serotonin receptors was observed in all brain areas examined. In vivo binding studies in mice indicate that 125I‐MIL is the best serotonin receptor label yet described, with the highest frontal cortex to cerebellum ratio of any serotonergic radioligand. 125I‐MIL is a promising ligand for both in vitro and in vivo labeling of serotonin receptors in the mammalian brain.
Rosmarinus officinalis L. extract and some of its active ingredients as potential emulsion stabilizers: a new approach to the formation of multiple (W/O/W) emulsion

Abstract:Nowadays, novel topical formulations loaded with natural functional actives are under intense investigations. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate how the rosemary extract and some of its active ingredients [rosmarinic acid (RA), ursolic acid (UA) and oleanolic acid (OA)] affect technological characteristics of multiple emulsion. Formulation has been prepared by adding investigated solutions (10%) in water/oil/water (W/O/W) multiple emulsion consisting of different lipophilic phases: olive oil and liquid paraffin, with 0.5% emulsifying agent (complex of sodium polyacrylate and polysorbate 20) under constant stirring with mechanical stirrer at room temperature. The emulsion parameters were evaluated using centrifugation test, freeze-thaw cycle test, microscopical and texture analyses. Rosemary's triterpenic saponins UA and OA showed the highest emulsion stabilizing properties: they decreased CI from 3.26% to 10.23% (p < 0.05). According to obtained interfacial tension data, the effect of rosemary active ingredients is not surfactant-like. Even though emulsifier itself at low concentration intends to form directly the multiple emulsion, the obtained results indicate that rosemary extract containing active ingredients does not only serve as functional cosmetic agent due to a number of biological activities, but also offer potential advantages as a stabilizer and an enhancer of W/O/W emulsions formation for dermopharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations.

Preliminary Studies about Valorization of Acmella oleracea Bioactive Content in Modern Dermato-Cosmetic Applications to Combat Skin Oxidative Stress

Abstract:The development of products with skin-protective effects has been driven by the increasing incidence of skin diseases that are exacerbated by increasing pollution, urbanization, poor living, working, fatigue, dietary habits, and general treatment. The ability of antioxidants to protect the skin from oxidative stress and its effects makes them one of the most important ingredients in today's cosmetics. This article aims first to characterize the plant extracts obtained from Acmella oleracea (A. oleracea) and then to evaluate the preliminary criteria for a new marketed product: the stability, antioxidant activity, and in vitro behavior of certain serums based on A. oleracea plant extract and hyaluronic acid. The extracts were obtained by liquid-solid extraction methods (maceration (M), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UEA), and a combined method between these two (UEA + M) using an aqueous solution of ethyl alcohol as the extraction solvent. The determination of the amounts of compounds with antioxidant activity highlighted the fact that the extract obtained from the whole plant of A. oleracea using maceration in conditions of S/L = 1:30, 20 days, and an extraction solvent percentage of 50% led to obtaining the highest amount of polyphenols (30.42 μg GAE/g), while using the combined UAE + M method under conditions of S/L = 1:30, 6 min + 20 days, and 50% extraction solvent led to obtaining the highest amount of flavonoids (32.88 mg QE/g). The tests performed on dermato-cosmetic serums based on the plant extract and multimolecular hyaluronic acid (HA) (1 HA with HMW-1.0 mDa-1.6 mDa; HA with LMW-10 kDa-200 kDa; and HA OLIGO, MW < 10 kDa) led to the conclusion that they exhibit structural stability, good shear behavior revealing a satisfactory texture, and high physical stability during storage. These results encourage the transition to in-depth testing, both microbiological and dermatological, as a final step in the consideration of a new commercial product.
Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Activity of Geraniol and Selected Geraniol Transformation Products against Gram-Positive Bacteria

Abstract:Both geraniol and the products of its transformation, thanks to their beneficial properties, find a variety of applications in cosmetics. Due to their antioxidant and moisturizing properties, these compounds can be added to skin care products such as face creams, lotions, oils, and masks. In addition, these compounds show some antibacterial and antifungal properties, making them suitable for application in skin care products to help fight against bacteria or fungi. This study determined the antimicrobial activity of geraniol and the compounds which were formed during its transformation in relation to selected Gram-positive bacteria, and the preliminary assessment was made whether these compounds can act as ingredients of preparations with potential antimicrobial activity in the treatment of various human diseases (for example diseases of the skin, digestive system, or urinary tract). In addition, this work presents studies on the microbiological purity of cream samples obtained with different contents of geraniol and its transformation products (contents of the tested compounds: 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%, 4%, 8%, and 12%). Antibacterial activity tests were performed using the disc diffusion method against Gram-positive cocci, including the reference strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, and against the clinical strains Staphylococcus aureus MRSA, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis VRE VanB, Enterococcus faecium VRE VanA, and Enterococcus faecium VRE VanB. The most active ingredient against bacteria of the Staphylococcus genus was citral, followed by linalool and then geraniol. During our tests, in the case of bacteria of the Enterococcus genus, citral also showed the highest activity, but linalool, ocimenes, and geraniol showed a slightly lower activity. Moreover, this study examined the microbiological purity of cream samples obtained with various contents of geraniol and its transformation products. In the tests of the microbiological purity of cream samples, no growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi was found, which proves the lack of microbiological contamination of the obtained cosmetic preparations. On this basis, it was assessed that these compounds have preservative properties in the prepared creams. The addition of the analyzed compounds also had influence on the durability of the creams and had no effect on the change in their consistency, did not negatively affect the separation of phases during storage, and even had a positive effect on organoleptic sensations by enriching the smell of the tested samples.

Abstract:CONTEXT: Inflammation and cell differentiation lead to a number of severe diseases. In the recent years, various studies focused on the anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity of essential oils (EOs) of numerous plants, including different Pinus species.OBJECTIVE: The phytochemical composition, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activity of EOs from needles and twigs of Pinus heldreichii Christ (Pinaceae) and P. peuce Griseb., and from needles, twigs and cones of P. mugo Turra were determined.MATERIALS AND METHODS: For separation and identification of the EOs, gas chromatography/flame ion detector (GC/FID) and GC/mass spectrometry were performed. The amount of secreted IL-6 in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage model was quantified (concentration of oils: 0.0001-0.2%, 3 h incubation). Cytotoxicity on the cancer cell lines HeLa, CaCo-2 and MCF-7 were determined using a MTT (Thiazolyl Blue Tetrazolium Bromide) assay (concentration of oils: 0.001-0.1%, 24 h incubation).RESULTS: The most prominent members in the oils include: δ-3-carene, α-pinene and linalool-acetate (P. mugo); α-pinene, β-phellandrene and β-pinene (P. peuce); limonene, α-pinene and (E)-caryophyllene (P. heldreichii). EOs showed significant cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines (IC<sub>50</sub> 0.007 to >0.1%), with a reduction in cell viability with up to 90% at a concentration of 0.1%, and anti-inflammatory activity (IC<sub>50</sub> 0.0008-0.02%) with a reduction of IL-6 secretion with up to 60% at a concentration of 0.01%.DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The EOs of needles and twigs from P. peuce and P. heldreichii as well as of needles, twigs and cones of P. mugo can be considered as promising agents for anticancer and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Effect on Propionibacterium acnes and Antioxidant Activity of Various Mushrooms, Chinese Herbs, and Plant Essential Oils

Abstract:Aims: The inhibitory effects of 30 kinds of mushrooms, Chinese Herbs, and plant essential oils on Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) were compared to screen high activity antibacterial materials. Furthermore, their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), antioxidant activity, total flavonoids, and total phenol content were determined. Methodology: The optimal antibacterial samples were screened using the paper diffusion method. The MIC was determined using the microdilution method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Trinitrophenylhydrazine (DPPH), Ferric Ion Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and 2, 2'-Azino-Bis(3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic Acid) (ABTS) methods, and the total flavonoids and total phenol contents were determined using Rutin Method and Folin-Ciocalteu Method. Results: The MIC of mushroom Tricholoma quercicola and Boletus edulis's extracts were 0.391mg/mL and 3.125mg/mL, showing better antibacterial effects on P. acnes. The Chinese herbs Pericarpium granati and Folium artemisia argyi's extracts (MIC 3.13mg/mL), plant essential oils of Eugenia caryophyllus flower, and Lavandula angustifolia (MIC 61.76mg/mL and 112.7mg/mL) exhibited satisfactory antibacterial effects on P. acnes. Antioxidant evaluation of the above six samples with high antibacterial activity revealed that Folium artemisiae argyi and Pericarpium granati's extract had good antioxidant activity. In addition, the determination results of total flavonoids and total phenols were consistent with the antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The above results showed that Boletus edulis, Tricholoma quercicola, Pericarpium granati, and Folium artemisiae argyi could be used as candidate materials for the antibacterial, antioxidant materials, providing a feasible idea for the development of subsequent skincare products for the treatment of P. acnes.
Nanoemulsions of essential oils stabilized with saponins exhibiting antibacterial and antioxidative properties

Abstract:Abstract Functional foods, drug delivery systems, and cosmetics are the main areas of application for multiphase systems, where the use of naturally derived compounds is preferred. Hence, this study aimed to assess the possibility of using natural surfactants and saponin-rich extracts to produce emulsions containing antibacterial and antioxidant cinnamon and clove essential oils (EOs). The analyses of nanoparticles using dynamic light scattering showed that the addition of plant extracts to solutions allows one to obtain stable emulsions and decreased zeta potential (< −40 mV) and droplet size (<200 nm). In all investigated emulsions, the increase of antioxidative properties was observed when both EOs and plant extracts were used. The emulsion with clove oil stabilized with Quillaja saponaria bark saponins has the highest combined antioxidative properties (3.55 ± 0.01 μg gallic acid equivalent per g). Additionally, a stronger antibacterial action against Pseudomonas bacteria was observed for clove oil with Quillaja saponaria and cinnamon oil with Glycyrrhiza glabra . In addition, plant extracts did not affect significantly the other properties of the oil emulsions, e.g. wettability, colour, and refractive index. All results show that the proposed emulsions can be helpful in the preparation of multifunctional emulsions, where the co-action of saponins and EOs is especially beneficial.

Phytochemical Composition and Characterization of In Vitro Bioactivities from Pinus Using Green Process

Abstract:Pinus species are notable in Mediterranean regions due to their ecological and economic importance. Various parts of these species are widely used in traditional medicine, especially pinecones, which are a significant source of bioactive compounds. The current study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical composition and biological properties of the aqueous extracts obtained by maceration from three Pinus petal fractions, from P. halepensis Mill., P. brutia Ten., and P. pinea L. (APW, BPW, and PPW respectively), and the core fractions of the same species (ACW, BCW, and PCW respectively). The results showed that APW demonstrated superior performance compared to other species and fractions (p ≤ 0.05), with the highest total polyphenol content (203.51 mg GAE/g DW) and the highest antioxidant potential (IC50 = 13.51 μg/mL) against DPPH free radical. All extracts showed high anticancer activity against HeLa and HepG2 cancer cell lines, and low inhibition against HEK-293, a normal cell line (<15%), indicating that none of extracts have any toxicity effect. Furthermore, only APW exhibits a significant inhibition against α-glucosidase with 77.20% at 50 μg/mL. HPLC-DAD analysis was conducted to identify 14 compounds. GC-MS analysis was conducted to identify 28 compounds, of which 11 were detected for the first time in this species. This study offers valuable insights into phytochemistry and potential therapeutic applications of pinecones.

Abstract:Flowers are a natural source of bioactive compounds that not only have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, but can also be used as natural dyes. For this reason, nowadays plants are widely used to produce natural cosmetics and foods. In these studies, the properties of the water extracts of Papaver rhoeas L., Punica granatum L., Clitoria ternatea L., Carthamus tinctorius L., and Gomphrena globosa L., as bioactive, natural dyes, were investigated. Plant flower extracts were tested for their antioxidant (ABTS and DPPH radical methods) and anti-inflammatory effects by determining the ability to inhibit the activity of lipoxygenase and proteinase. The extracts were tested for their cytotoxic effect on skin cells, using Alamar Blue and Neutral Red tests. The ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes responsible for the destruction of elastin and collagen was also studied. Research has shown that extracts have no toxic effect on skin cells, are a rich source of antioxidants and show the ability to inhibit the activity of elastase and collagenase enzymes. P. rhoeas extract showed the strongest antioxidant properties with IC50 value of 24.8 ± 0.42 μg/mL and 47.5 ± 1.01 μg/mL in ABTS and DPPH tests, respectively. The tested plants are also characterized by an anti-inflammatory property, for which the ability to inhibit lipoxygenase at a level above 80% and proteinase at the level of about 55% was noted. Extracts from P. rhoeas, C. ternatea, and C. tinctorius show the strongest coloring ability and can permanently dye cosmetic products, without significant color changes during the storage of the product.

Abstract:The aim of this research was to investigate and compare the antioxidant, anti‐tyrosinase, anti‐aging, and anti‐inflammatory activities of 16 herbal extracts for topical application in cosmetic/cosmeceutical products. Herbal plant materials were extracted by infusion in boiled water for 15 min. The total phenolic content and total flavonoid content of each extract were investigated by the Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride methods, respectively. Antioxidant activities were investigated using 2,2'‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl and a ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Anti‐tyrosinase and anti‐aging activities were investigated using an in vitro enzymatic‐spectrophotometric method. Anti‐inflammatory activities were investigated using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. The findings show that the Stevia rebaudiana extract has the most significant levels of both phenols and flavonoids (p < 0.05). The S. rebaudiana , Rosa damascene , and Phyllanthus emblica extracts possessed the most significant antioxidant activities (p < 0.05) and a promising whitening effect with moderate anti‐tyrosinase activities. Furthermore, the Echinacea purpurea extract possessed the most significant anti‐collagenase (78.5 ± 0.0%), anti‐elastase (69.0 ± 1.4%), and anti‐hyaluronidase activity (64.2 ± 0.3%). The Morus alba extract possessed the most significant anti‐inflammatory activity, since it could inhibit the secretion of interleukin‐6 and tumor necrosis factor‐α (p < 0.05). Therefore, these herbal extracts have promising skin benefits and have potential for use as active ingredients in cosmetic/cosmeceutical products.

Abstract:Chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils (REOs) of roses including Rosa damascene (RD), Rosa centifolia (RC), Rosa pomponia (RP) and Rosa chinensis Jacq “Crimson Glory” H. T. (CG), and their fractions obtained through molecular distillation (MD) were investigated. The major constitutes were: β-citronellol and nonadecane in RDEO, RCEO and RPEO, 1-nonadecene and nonadecane in CGEO. After MD, a larger proportion of more volatile compounds existed in the distillates relative to their original oils and residues. The REOs and fractions exhibited not only moderate antioxidant activities in the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and reducing power assays, but also obvious broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities towards the seven tested microorganisms. Notably, the higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were observed for the distillates of RDEO, RCEO and RPEO. Moreover, the active antioxidant constitutes in the REOs were characterized as eugenol and methyl eugenol, and the potential antimicrobial components were linalool, phenethyl alcohol, β-citronellol, geraniol, eugenol and methyl eugenol. Results demonstrated that MD could be used to obtain fractions from REOs with higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and the distillates of RDEO, RCEO and RPEO have potential to act as novel natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.
