Abstract:A methanol to propene (MTP) process was studied experimentally in a miniature fixed bed reactor. Effects of feeding conditions, i.e. methanol feeding, olefin feeding, and methanol/olefin co-feeding were investigated respectively. The results show that the key reactions of MTP on H-ZSM-5 zeolite include methylation of methanol, oligomerization–cracking of olefins (C2~C5) and cracking of olefins (C6~C7). Methanol to propene is happened through a complex reaction network in which all steps are fast reactions, while methanol cracking, ethylene conversion, aromatic and paraffin formation are slow reactions. A comprehensive MTP reaction network with kinetic model is developed. Kinetic parameters are obtained by data fitting with the Levenberg–Marquardt method. The results show that the apparent activation energies of methanol cracking and methylation, and olefin cracking are positive, while the apparent activation energies of oligomerization–cracking are negative, which is the result of endothermic cracking reactions coupled with exothermic adsorption of olefins.

Abstract:The methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction was analyzed in its intrinsic kinetics, diffusion, and reaction-diffusion aspects for maximized propylene yield. An intrinsic MTP kinetic model was introduced to account for the combined path of hydrocarbon pool and dual-cycle mechanisms of the MTP reaction over HZSM-5 catalyst. The MTP reaction was performed under several olefin cofeeding cases to study the effects of olefin recycling on the MTP mechanism and propylene production. Analyses on olefin cofeeding have shown to improve propylene yield by 10-20% as the added olefins enhance olefin methylation and cracking rates for higher propylene production. Development of a reaction-diffusion model also showed the recommended temperature use of 480 degrees C for optimum reaction and diffusion rates within the HZSM-5 catalyzed MTP process. These findings provide important insights for future works on the optimum design of the HZSM-5 catalyzed MTP process with an olefin recycling feature.
Methanol to Olefin Conversion on HSAPO-34 Zeolite from Periodic Density Functional Theory Calculations: A Complete Cycle of Side Chain Hydrocarbon Pool Mechanism

Abstract:For its unique position in the coal chemical industry, the methanol to olefin (MTO) reaction has been a hot topic in zeolite catalysis. Due to the complexities of catalyst structure and reaction networks, many questions such as how the olefin chain is built from methanol remain elusive. On the basis of periodic density functional theory calculations, this work establishes the first complete catalytic cycle for MTO reaction via hexamethylbenzene (HMB) trapped in HSAPO-34 zeolite based on the so-called side chain hydrocarbon pool mechanism. The cycle starts from the methylation of HMB that leads to heptamethylbenzenium ion (heptaMB(+)) intermediate. This is then followed by the growth of side chain via repeated deprotonation of benzenium ions and methylation of the exocyclic double bond. Ethene and propene can finally be released from the side ethyl and isopropyl groups of benzenium ions by deprotonation and subsequent protonation steps. We demonstrate that (i) HMB/HSAPO-34 only yields propene as the primary product based on the side chain hydrocarbon pool mechanism and (ii) an indirect proton-shift step mediated by water that is always available in the system is energetically more favorable than the traditionally regarded internal hydrogen-shift step. Finally, the implications of our results toward understanding the effect of acidity of zeolite on MTO activity are also discussed.
The Formation Mechanism of Mo-methylidene Species over Mo/HBeta Catalysts for Heterogeneous Olefin Metathesis : A Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to optimize the Mo active sites in HBeta zeolite catalysts as well as to locate the reaction pathways to form the Mo-methylidene species. Two different Mo active sites, i.e., the oxidized MoVIO2 and its reduced form MoVO(OH), were developed and incorporated into HBeta zeolites by replacing a pair of Brønsted acidic sites. The Mo-methylidene species were found to be produced through two elementary reaction steps, and the Mo-oxametallacyclobutanes were identified as the intermediates. The activation barriers of the decompositions of the oxametallacyclobutane intermediates (Step 2) were estimated to be higher than those of the ethene addition on the Mo active sites (Step 1). The oxidation states of the Mo centers exerted marked influences on the stabilities of the intermediates as well as on the activation barriers and reaction heats of Steps 1 and 2, which were elucidated by the electronic properties of the Ob-ligands directly bonded to the Mo centers. Both free energy barriers and reaction heats have indicated that the whole processes of generating the Mo-methylidene species were preferred over the Mo(VI) rather than Mo(V) active site. Accordingly, the Mo(VI) active site was more efficient in catalyzing the formation of Mo-methylidene species in the heterogeneous Mo/HBeta catalytic systems.

Abstract:The first C–C bond formation mechanism in the methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process has always been a highly controversial issue. Using solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the initial C1 reactants and C1 intermediates were observed on the HSSZ-13 zeolite surface. In particular, for the first time, the highly reactive ethene precursor, surface ethoxy species, was directly captured under a real MTH reaction. These findings and in situ captured activated C1 reactants linked C1 species and initially generated ethene, in which C1 intermediates activate methanol/DME to form the first C–C bond. For such a difficult-to-detect and extremely initial reaction process, the advanced ab initio molecular dynamics technology simulated the complete process from C1 reactants to product. The visualized reaction process vividly shows methanol/DME in the gas phase approaching SMS/TMO on zeolite, being activated via effective collision and methylation to generate an ethene precursor. The zeolite catalyst and active C1 intermediates contribute together to the first C–C bond formation in a synergistic manner.

Abstract:It is well known that the reaction process of methanol to olefins (MTO) keeps to the hydrocarbon pool (HCP) mechanism; however, there is no clear consensus over how the primary HCP species are built and how they evolve in the transition period of MTO. In this work, the building and evolution of the primary HCP species for MTO over H-ZSM-5 zeolite were probed through combined pulse-quench, GC–MS and 13C-methanol labeling techniques. The results indicate that propene/ethene carrying the first C–C bonds formed in the induction period can quickly constitute long chain alkenes through oligomerization. Subsequently, the long chain alkenes are inclined to form methylcyclopentadienes (MCPdienes) via cyclization. After that, methylbenzenes (MBs) are produced through the ring expansion of MCPdienes. Both MCPdienes and MBs can boost the production of light olefins in MTO; MCPdienes decompose or convert to MBs easily at elevated temperature, whereas MBs accumulate gradually on the zeolite channels and contribute more greatly to the production of olefins at steady stage and high temperature. As a result, MCPdienes are identified as the primary HCP intermediates in the early transition period of MTO and their appearance promotes the build-up of aromatic HCP (dominated by MBs) and drives the MTO process from the induction period to the steady period. The insight shown in this work helps to clarify the reaction mechanism of MTO in the initial period, which should be of benefit to further researches into MTO.

Abstract:The side-chain hydrocarbon pool mechanism for the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conversion catalyzed by methylnaphthalene in SAPO-34 zeolite was investigated by means of periodic density functional theory calculations. The alkyl side-chain was propagated by the methylation step and was eliminated into ethene and propene by the indirect proton shift steps in the mechanism. As shown, dimethylnaphthalene is more active than methylbenzenes for the MTO reaction when the organic intermediates are not rotationally limited inside the pore of catalyst. Propene is intrinsically more favorable than ethene as the product. The rate-determining step to produce ethene is the elimination of side ethyl chain, while that to produce propene is the methylation of exocyclic double bond in the reaction intermediates. However, the MTO activity of methylnaphthalene may be decreased by the limitation of SAPO-34 zeolite for the rotation of organic intermediates.

Abstract:Identification of the reaction intermediates and probing into their evolution in the conversion of methanol to light olefins (MTO) are rather challenging but meaningful in unraveling the hydrocarbon pool (HCP) mechanism as well as in exploring more efficient catalysts in MTO. Hence, we would like to report a finding made in this regard that methylcyclohexene (MCH) is a crucial reaction intermediate in the initial period of MTO over H-ZSM-5 through various measures, including transient pulse experiment, 13C cross-polarization/magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS NMR), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculation. The early alkenes (mostly ethene and propene) produced in the induction stage can rapidly construct the long-chain alkenes through oligomerization and create dienes through the Prins reaction with formaldehyde from methanol dehydrogenation. After that, MCH is facilely formed via the Diels–Alder (D–A) reaction between dienes and monoenes. Compared with the oligomerization and cyclization of alkenes, the D–A reaction shows higher activity with a lower energy barrier in building larger molecule products. MCH is highly reactive and can be quickly transformed either into methylcyclopentene (MCP) via ring contraction or into methylbenzene (MB) via hydride transfer and deprotonations; the formation of MCP may take the priority over that of MB at a low temperature, as the former reaction needs a lower energy barrier. Accordingly, MCH acts as a bridge connecting MCP and MB and plays a vital role in the establishment of initial HCP in MTO. These findings should be helpful for an in-depth understanding of the MTO reaction mechanism and then benefit further research into MTO.

Abstract:H-ZSM-5 zeolite is a typical catalyst for methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conversion. Although the performance of zeolite catalysts for MTO conversion is related to the actual location of acid sites in the zeolite framework, the catalytic roles of the acid sites in different pore channels of the H-ZSM-5 zeolite are not well understood. In this study, the MTO reaction network, involving the aromatic cycle, alkene cycle, and aromatization process, and also the diffusion behavior of methanol feedstock and olefin and aromatic products at different acid sites in the straight channel, sinusoidal channel, and intersection cavity of H-ZSM-5 zeolite was comparatively investigated using density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamic simulations. The results indicated that the aromatic cycle and aromatization process occurred preferentially at the acid sites in the intersection cavities with a much lower energy barrier than that at the acid sites in the straight and sinusoidal channels. In contrast, the formation of polymethylbenzenes was significantly suppressed at the acid sites in the sinusoidal and straight channels, whereas the alkene cycle can occur at all three types of acid sites with similar energy barriers and probabilities. Consequently, the catalytic performance of H-ZSM-5 zeolite for MTO conversion, including activity and product selectivity, can be regulated properly through the purposive alteration of the acid site distribution, viz., the location of Al in the zeolite framework. This study helps to elucidate the relation between the catalytic performance of different acid sites in the H-ZSM-5 zeolite framework for MTO conversion, which should greatly benefit the design of efficient catalyst for methanol conversion.The aromatic cycle and aromatization reaction of MTO conversion over H-ZSM-5 zeolite occurred preferentially in the intersection cavities, whereas the alkene cycle occurred with the same probability in the intersection cavities, straight channels, and sinusoidal channels.

Abstract:Significance Methanol conversion to hydrocarbons has emerged as a key reaction for synthetic energy carriers and light alkenes. The autocatalytic nature and complex reaction network make a mechanistic understanding very challenging and widely debated. Water is not only part of the overall conversion, it is also frequently used as diluent, influencing, in turn, activity, selectivity, and stability of the catalysts. Water directly and indirectly influences the processes that initiate the C–C formation via adjusting the chemical potential of methanol and dimethyl ether, with the latter being more efficient to generate highly reactive C 1 species via hydride transfer. The insight shows paths to optimize the stability of catalysts and to tailor the product distribution for H-ZSM-5–based catalysts.

Abstract:Methanol to olefins (MTO) reaction over H-RUB 50 zeolite, an eight-membered ring (8-MR) and cavity-type zeolite, presents higher selectivity for ethene. The host-guest interaction was dissected and used to explain the cavity-controlled reaction route and product selectivity. By the aid of the in situ C-13 MAS NMR spectroscopy, GC-MS, C-12/C-13-methanol switch experiments, and theoretical calculations, the methylbenzenium cations, methylcyclopentenyl cations (triMB(+), tetraMB(+), and triMCP(+)), and their deprotonated forms with less methyl groups substitution were captured over LEV zeolite and confirmed as the critical reaction intermediates. The energetic span model was employed to identify the preferred reaction mechanism and provide the theoretical evidence to understand product selectivity. The side-chain methylation mechanism was theoretically predicated to be the energetically favorable route for olefins generation with the participation of these active intermediates. Paring cycle with trimethlycyclopentadienyl cation as the intermediate makes less contribution to ethene formation due to the relatively large energy span. Based on the overall evaluation of the catalytic cycle, the difference of energy span of the whole reaction pathway for ethene and propene formation can give direct theoretical evidence for product selectivity. Additional study to the steps for generating precursors of ethene and propene offers extra support on the understanding of product selectivity and the dominant generation of ethene. This study captured the critical intermediates and established a rational and energetically feasible route of light olefins generation from MTO reaction over H-RUB-50. More importantly, it is exhibited that cavity controls the product selectivity via the important steric constraint for the formation of critical intermediates and the proceeding of critical reaction steps, based on the understanding of the host guest interaction of the cavity-type zeolite catalyzed MTO reaction.

Abstract:The production of light olens via the methanol-to-olens (MTO) reaction is an important chemical process that links non-oil resources such as coal and natural gas with olen-based petrochemicals. The catalysts used for the MTO reaction are mainly microporous acidic zeolites amongst which H-SAPO-34, a silicoaluminophosphate zeolite with the chabazite (CHA) topology, is of particular importance due to its high selectivity to ethylene and propene, and is of commercial use. H-SSZ-13 is a CHA silicoaluminate analogue of H-SAPO-34 which has been shown to be a potential alternative in the MTO process. Despite the successful industrialization of this process with methanol conversion higher than 99%, further improving of the catalyst performances in terms of selectivity has been an important scientic endeavor. For example, the selectivity to ethylene and propene has increased from 79.2% in the rst generation industrial DMTO process (“D” refers to Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics) to 85.7% in the second generation DMTO-II process in China. However, there is still signicant room to improve catalysts performances which can be informed by providing a deeper understanding of the catalytic reaction intermediates and reaction mechanism. Abstract:The paring mechanism, which belongs to the aromatic cycle of the methanol-to-olefins process and produces propene, is investi- gated for H-ZSM-5 (MFI structure), H-SSZ-24 (AFI structure) and H-SAPO-34 (CHA structure) with the heptamethylbenzylium cation as a co-catalyst using DFT and ab initio calculations. We focus on the mechanistic pathway of the paring mechanism that we have proposed recently for H-SSZ-13 [Catal. Sci. Technol. 12 (2022) 3516–3523.], in which ring contraction occurs from hexamethylmethylenecyclohexadiene and the resulting five-membered ring keeps an unsaturated methylene group throughout the process, leading to tetramethylfulvene as the intermediate after propene elimination. The highest free energy barriers (at 400 °C) for this mechanism are found to be 139 kJ/mol, 156 kJ/mol and 167 kJ/mol for H-SAPO-34, H-SSZ-24 and H-ZSM-5, respectively, compared to 127 kJ/mol for H-SSZ-13. All these barriers are low enough to be kinetically relevant and can thus explain the ob- served formation of propene as one of the main products of the MTO-process in these zeolites. The barriers for polymethylbenzene methylation to recover the active species are higher than the barriers for the paring mechanism in all zeolites (164 kJ/mol, 187 kJ/mol and 189 kJ/mol for H-SAPO-34, H-SSZ-24 and H-ZSM-5, compared to 163 kJ/mol for H-SSZ-13). The lowest barriers are found for H-SAPO-34, which is often the commercial catalyst in methanol-to-propene plants.

Abstract:Methyl carboxylate esters promote the formation of dimethyl ether (DME) from the dehydration of methanol in H-ZSM-5 zeolite. We employ a multilevel quantum method to explore the possible associative and dissociative mechanisms in the presence, and absence, of six methyl ester promoters. This hybrid method combines density functional theory, with dispersion corrections (DFT-D3), for the full periodic system, with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) for small clusters representing the reaction site, and coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple substitution (CCSD(T)) for the reacting molecules. The calculated adsorption enthalpy of methanol, and reaction enthalpies of the dehydration of methanol to DME within H-ZSM-5,agree with experiment to within chemical accuracy (~4 kJ mol-1).For the promoters, a reaction pathway via an associative mechanism gives lower overall reaction enthalpies and barriers compared to the reaction with methanol only. Each stage of this mechanism is explored and related to experimental data. We provide evidence that suggests the promoter's adsorption to the Brønsted acid site is the most important factor dictating its efficiency. High Reactivity of Dimethyl Ether Activated by Zeolite Ferrierite within a Fer Cage: A Prediction Study

Abstract:The zeolite-catalyzed conversion of DME into chemicals is considered environmentally friendly in industry. The periodic density functional theory, statistical thermodynamics, and the transition state theory are used to study some possible parallel reactions about the hydrogen-bonded DME over zeolite ferrierite. The following are the key findings: (1) the charge separation probably leads to the conversion of a hydrogen-bonded DME into a dimethyl oxonium ion (i.e., DMO+ or (CH3)2OH+) with a positive charge of about 0.804 e; (2) the methylation of DME, CH3OH, H2O, and CO by DMO+ at the T2O6 site of zeolite ferrierite shows the different activated internal energy (∆E≠) ranging from 18.47 to 30.06 kcal/mol, implying the strong methylation ability of DMO+; (3) H-abstraction by DMO+ is about 3.94–15.53 or 6.57–18.16 kcal/mol higher than DMO+ methylation in the activation internal energy; (4) six DMO+-mediated reactions are more likely to occur due to the lower barriers, compared to the experimental barrier (i.e., 39.87 kcal/mol) for methyl acetate synthesis; (5) active intermediates, such as (CH3)3O+, (CH3)2OH+, CH3CO+, CH3OH2+, and CH2=OH+, are expected to appear; (6) DMO+ is slightly weaker than the well-known surface methoxy species (ZO-CH3) in methylation; and (7) the methylated activity declines in the order of DME, CH3OH, H2O, and CO, with corresponding rate constants at 463.15 K of about 3.4 × 104, 1.1 × 102, 0.18, and 8.2 × 10−2 s−1, respectively.

Abstract:A series of H-ZSM-5 (TZ-m, m represents different Si/Al ratios) has been prepared and their Methanol to Olefin (MTO) performance are investigated. By adjusting the catalyst weight of H-ZSM-5 loaded in the pulse micro-reactor, the total Brϕnsted acid sites (BAS) amount of TZ-m catalysts is unified. The resultant similar methanol conversion (∼24 %) over different TZ-m zeolites confirms that the MTO reaction is dominantly catalyzed by BAS. Nevertheless, the BAS density considerably influences the reaction pathways; more condensed BAS enhances the relative propagation of aromatic-based cycle to alkene-based cycle, and vice versa. However, isotopic co-feeding and switching experiment reveals that the reactivity of aromatic hydrocarbon pool (HCP) species, which has been considered as main ethene precursors, is almost independent of acid site density. Although large amounts of aromatics are generated via hydrogen transfer reactions on the sample with high acid site density, most of the confined aromatics function as coke precursors instead of active HCPs. The accumulation of such confined aromatics in zeolite channels further limits olefins mobility and their access to BAS, leading to decreased reactivity of alkene HCPs on high acid site-density samples.

Abstract:The methanol-to-hydrocarbon process is known to proceed autocatalytically in H-ZSM-5 after an induction period where framework methoxy species are formed. In this work, we provide mechanistic insight into the framework methylation within H-ZSM-5 at high methanol loadings and varying acid site densities by means of first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. The molecular dynamics simulations show that stable methanol clusters form in the zeolite pores, and these clusters commonly deprotonate the active site; however, the cluster size is dependent on the temperature and acid site density. Enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations give evidence that the barrier for methanol conversion is significantly affected by the neighborhood of an additional acid site, suggesting that cooperative effects influence methanol clustering and reactivity. Abstract:ConspectusThe methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process has provided a new route to obtaining basic chemicals without relying on an oil resource. Acidity and shape selectivity endow the zeolite with a decisive role in MTH catalysis. However, the inherent reaction characteristics of the MTH reaction over zeolites, such as the complexity of catalytic reaction kinetics, the diversity of catalytic reaction modes, and even the limitations of catalytic and diffusive decoupling, have all confused people with respect to obtaining a comprehensive mechanistic understanding. By examining the zeolite-catalyzed MTH reaction from the perspective of chemical bonding, one would realize that this reaction reflects the dynamic assembly process of C-C bonds from C1 components to multicarbon products. The key to understanding the MTH reaction lies in the mechanism by which C-C bonds are formed and rearranged in the confined microenvironment of the channel or cage structures of zeolite catalysts to achieve shape-selective production.The applications of advanced in situ spectroscopy as well as computational chemistry provide tremendous opportunities for capturing and identifying the details of the structure and properties of reactants, intermediates, and products in the confined reaction space of zeolite channels or cages, observing the real-time dynamic evolution of the catalytic surface, and modeling the elementary reaction steps at the molecular and atomic levels.In this Account, the dynamic catalytic mechanism of the zeolite-catalyzed MTH reaction will be outlined based on decades of continuous research and in-depth understanding. The combination of advanced in situ spectroscopy and theoretical methods allowed us to observe and simulate the formation, growth, and aging process on the working catalyst surface and thus map the dynamical evolution of active sites from a Brønsted acid site (BAS) to an organic-inorganic hybrid supramolecule (OIHS) in the MTH reaction. Moreover, the ever-evolving dynamic succession of the OIHS from surface methoxy species (SMS) to active ion-pair complexes (AIPC) to inert complexes (IC) guided the dynamic autocatalytic process from initiation to sustaining and then to termination, resulting in a complex interlaced hypercycle reaction network. The concept of dynamic catalysis will provide deep insight into the complex catalytic mechanisms as well as the structure-activity relationships in MTH chemistry. More importantly, we are now getting closer to the nature of zeolite catalysis beyond the traditional view of BAS catalysis.
Host–Guest Interactions and Their Catalytic Consequences in Methanol to Olefins Conversion on Zeolites Studied by 13c–27al Double-Resonance Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Methanol conversion over zeolites with different topologies (H-ZSM-5, H-SSZ-13, and H-MOR) was studied using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatrography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Host guest interactions between active hydrocarbon pool (HP) species and zeolite framework (Bronsted acid/base site) were observed, and the supramolecular reaction centers (SMCs) generated by the interactions were unambiguously identified by C-13-Al-37 double-resonance NMR The internuclear spatial interaction/proximity between the C-13 nuclei (associated with HP species) and the Al-27 nuclei (associated with Bronsted acid/base site) was analyzed and compared over the three zeolites. The product shape selectivity of zeolites greatly influences the catalytic performance that can be linked to the nature of HP species and the host guest interactions. Closer spatial proximity and stronger interaction between methylbenzenes (MBs) and Bronsted acid/base sites were observed over H-SSZ-13 and H-MOR zeolites, which facilitate aromatic-based reaction routes and rationalize the higher selectivity to ethene on the two catalysts. This leads to rapid deactivation at high temperature due to coke deposition on the active sites caused by the evolution of active MBs. For H-ZSM-5, the lesser amount of retained MBs and their weaker interactions with the active sites at high temperature cause the aromatic-based reactions to be insignificant and lead to the prevalence of alkene-based and carbocation-involved reactions, which are responsible for the high resistance of H-ZSM-5 to deactivation. In contrast, at lower temperature, the aromatic-based reaction route is favored with the MBs-composed SMCs prevailing. The distribution of the carbonaceous species in deactivated catalysts was revealed by host guest interactions.

Abstract:The methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process allows the conversion of methanol/dimethyl ether into olefins on acidic zeolites via the so-called hydrocarbon pool mechanism. However, the site and mechanism of formation of the first carbon-carbon bond are still a matter of debate. Here, we show that the Lewis acidic Al sites on the 110 facet of γ-Al2O3 can readily activate dimethyl ether to yield CH4, alkenes, and surface formate species according to spectroscopic studies combined with a computational approach. The carbon-carbon forming step as well as the formation of methane and surface formate involves a transient oxonium ion intermediate, generated by a hydrogen transfer between surface methoxy species and coordinated methanol on adjacent Al sites. These results indicate that extra framework Al centers in acidic zeolites, which are associated with alumina, can play a key role in the formation of the first carbon-carbon bond, the initiation step of the industrial MTO process.
