Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is normally considered as the limited nutrient for shallow freshwater lakes and can potentially trigger eutrophication on account of high concentrations. Due to the various transportation and transformation processes, P source apportionment and management in lake ecosystems have become more and more difficult. Combining with sequential extraction of P fractions and mineralogical analysis, the isotopic compositions of oxygen in phosphate (╬┤ 18 O P ) of resin-extractable P from the different samples including soil, estuary sediments, pond sediments, and lake sediments in the Shijiuhu Lake catchment, China, were investigated. The results showed that ╬┤ 18 O P values ranged from +15.23 to +21.92ŌĆ░ in agricultural soil, +16.53 to +24.10ŌĆ░ in estuary sediments, +18.90 to +20.90ŌĆ░ in pond sediments, and +17.42 to +19.70ŌĆ░ in lake sediments. Isotopic signatures indicated that chemical fertilizers with heavier ╬┤ 18 O P values (+20.70 to +26.50ŌĆ░) were the predominant contributors of P in the soil. The river transportation together with Fe/AlŌĆōP desorption on anaerobic condition simultaneously stimulated the enrichment of P in the lake sediments, even though the biotic activity regulated the isotope values moving toward the equilibrium. Eroded soil was the important source of P in lake and pond sediments via drainage and runoff, and conserved the source isotope signal in the samples. Stronger biotic activity in the aquatic environments dragged ╬┤ 18 O P values toward the equilibrium. However, conspicuous off-equilibrium isotope signature suggested the terrestrial sources in the aquatic ecosystems. The calculation of two end-member linear mixing models suggested that soils also predominantly controlled the P occurrence in the lake sediments with contribution higher than 80%, indicating that decreasing inputs from the agricultural activities is important in P reduction on catchment scale. Generally, ╬┤ 18 O P from different sources can provide indirect and important evidences for the identification and management of P sources in the lake catchment.

Abstract:Identifying phosphorus (P) sources is critical for solving eutrophication and controlling P in aquatic environments. Phosphate oxygen isotopes (δ18Op) have been used to trace P sources. However, the application of this method has been greatly restricted due to δ18OP values from the potential source having wide and overlapping ranges. In this research, P sources were traced by combining δ18Op with multiple stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N), hydrogen (δD), and dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13C). Then, a Bayesian-based Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) model and IsoSource model were used to estimate the proportional contributions of the potential sources in the Tuojiang River. δ18Op was not in equilibrium with ambient water, and statistically significant differences in the δ18Op values were found between the potential sources, indicating that δ18Op can be used to trace the P sources. δ15N, δD, and δ13C could assist δ18Op in identifying the main sources of P. The SIAR and IsoSource models suggested that industrial and domestic sewage was the largest contributor, followed by phosphate rock and phosphogypsum and agricultural sewage. The uncertainty of the calculation results of the SIAR model was lower than that of the IsoSource model. These findings provide new insights into tracing P sources using multiple stable isotopes in watersheds.
Identifying Sources and Cycling of Phosphorus in the Sediment of a Shallow Freshwater Lake in China Using Phosphate Oxygen Isotopes

Abstract:Biotic and abiotic pathways for the transformation of phosphorus (P) in the sediment of Taihu Lake, a eutrophic shallow freshwater lake in southeastern China, were studied using the oxygen isotope ratios of phosphate (δ18OP) along with sediment chemistry, X-ray diffraction, and 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopic methods. The results showed that δ18OP values of sediment P pools significantly deviated from equilibrium and thus allowed distinguishing potential P sources or pathways of transformation. Isotope values of authigenic P being lighter than equilibrium suggests the re-mineralization of organic matter and subsequent precipitation of apatite as the major pathway of formation of authigenic P. The δ18OP values of the Al-bound P pool (18.9-23.5‰) and ferric Fe-bound P (16.79-19.86‰) could indicate potential terrestrial sources, but the latter being closer to equilibrium values implies partial overprinting of potential source signature, most likely due to reductive dissolution and release of P and followed by partial biological cycling before re-sorption/re-precipitation with newly formed ferric Fe minerals. Oxic/anoxic oscillation and dissolution/re-precipitation reactions and expected isotope excursion are corroborated by sediment chemistry and Mössbauer spectroscopic results. These findings provide improved insights for better understanding the origin and biogeochemical cycling of P associated with eutrophication in shallow freshwater lakes.
Identification of the Sources of Different Phosphorus Fractions in Lake Sediments by Oxygen Isotopic Composition of Phosphate

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) released from sediment driven by oxidation-reduction potential and enzymes can increase the concentrations of dissolved P in the overlying water, which trigger widespread algal blooms. Therefore, identification sediment P sources is critical for the management of P and restoration of eutrophic aquatic ecosystem. Sediment P fractions have been widely reported, whereas little is known regarding the source and pathway of different P fractions in eutrophic lake sediments. In this study, we applied chemical sequential extraction with oxygen isotopic compositions of phosphate (δ18OP) to identify the inorganic P (Pi) source in the sediments of Lake Dianchi, China. Results show that contents of organic P (Po), HCl-Pi, NaOH-Pi, and NaHCO3-Pi of sediment were the main P fractions compared with that of sediment H2O-Pi, which was attributed to the bioavailable difference of these P fractions. Significant difference on the equilibrium values of δ18OP (δ18OP-eq), δ18OP of sediment P fractions, and δ18OP of external P was observed, which reflected the complex transformation processes of these P fractions in sediments. Further, the values of sediment δ18ONaHCO3-Pi at some sites (17.2–22.5‰) deviated from δ18OP-eq (14.7–19.0‰), and these values fell into the values of δ18OP for external P (7.7–23.8‰), suggesting that sediment NaHCO3-Pi at these sites derived from external P. Comparison the values of sediment δ18ONaOH-Pi (14.5–24.9‰) with δ18OP-eq and δ18O of external P sources suggested that sediment NaOH-Pi was not only from external P, but also from sedimentary Po remineralization. Pi released from sediment NaOH-Pi may be responsible for the higher values of sediment δ18OHCl-Pi (15.2–20.8‰) than that of soils (13.1–15.3‰) and phosphate rock (8.9–12.6‰). Results gained from this study provided critical insights for the source and biogeochemical cycling of P across the sediment-water interface in the eutrophic lake.

Abstract:Reducing excess phosphorus (P) loads that cause eutrophication in aquatic systems is essential for meeting water quality standards. The oxygen isotopic composition of phosphate (δ18Op) is a powerful tool for tracking P sources and cycling in diverse natural ecosystems. Here, we use δ18Op distribution in a small freshwater body (a lagoon–lake system) with high biological activity. We report δ18Op values seasonally along the water flow path in lagoon–lake system adjacent to Lake Biwa, Japan. The δ18Op values of inflowing water originating as agricultural runoff were constant throughout the study period at +16.3‰ ± 0.2‰. The δ18Op values in the system were generally offset from temperature‐dependent isotopic equilibrium with the surrounding water, ranging from +11.1‰ to +17.8‰. The δ18Op values of the lake water approached equilibrium values in July and October, when dissolved inorganic P (DIP) retention rates were high, consistent with extensive biologically mediated phosphate cycling. A δ18Op two end‐member mixing model, involving inflowing P and biologically recycled P, suggests that P turnover rates in the lagoon–lake system were high during the productive seasons. In contrast, the longer lake water residence time in the non‐irrigation season (winter) allowed δ18Op values to deviate toward lower values relative to both equilibrium and agricultural source δ18Op values, suggesting that P metabolism was dominated by extracellular/ecto‐enzymatic hydrolysis of dissolved organic P under low DIP concentrations. This work highlighted the utility of δ18Op for understanding P dynamics in shallow lake ecosystems.

Abstract:Surface waters in Taihu Basin, China are increasingly threatened by phosphorus (P) related eutrophication. This study investigated the temporal-spatial status of P in sediment-water in riparian wetlands located in the southern region of Taihu Basin. Two sets of laboratory simulation study, 1) static columns and 2) steady-flow flumes representing wetland in both dry and rainy seasons, were carried out to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of P interaction between sediment and overlying water. In wetland sediments, significant increases in total P (TP) and NaHCO3 (pH=8.5) extractable P (Olsen-P) occurred with the increase of NaOH+EDTA extractable P (NaOH+EDTA-P). After comparing the P adsorption capacity (Q(max)) with TP in the sediment, there could be a risk of P export from the sediment. In the static column experiment, dynamic characteristics of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in the overlying water can be divided into buffer reaction, rapid adsorption, and slow adsorption. A quasi U-pattern curve was observed in the steady-flow flume experiment, i.e., DRP in the overlying water decreased initially and then increased. Because upstream water with high P concentration flowed over the test wetland during rainy seasons, the ecological role of P interception by the sediment could be weakened.

Abstract:Identifying sediment phosphorus sources in river-lake coupled system is a question in developing preferential control strategies for phosphorus. As sediments adsorbed phosphorus and microbes would be transported with changing hydrodynamic, the phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints shed light on determining the major sediment phosphorus sources. However, the identification of microbial community fingerprints is a challenge because both microbial succession and hydrological characteristics of river-lake systems would affect the stability of fingerprints. Therefore, this study provided a framework for optimizing phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints, and attempted to identify the major sources of sediment phosphorus in river-lake coupled ecosystem. Meiliang Lake is one of the highly eutrophic area in Taihu Lake, where the sediments, bacterial communities, and phosphorus had a close relationship. Through analyzing the connectivity of microbes along water continuum, a microbial fingerprints candidate database was constructed. The phosphorus-related bacterial communities were screened and optimized by comparing the difference of predicted results between upstream and downstream, forming the stable microbial community fingerprints which consisted of Bacteroidia, Bacilli, Clostridia, and other species at the class level. SourceTracker results that based on the optimized phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints indicated that the major sediment phosphorus sources to Meiliang Lake were Liangxi River, Wujingang River, and Donghuandi River, with the relative standard deviations ranging from 2.59% to 27.56%. The accuracy of phosphorus source apportionments was further confirmed based on the composite pollution index and hydrodynamic condition. This study put forward suggestions on how to improve the stability of microbial community fingerprints, and would help to improve the understanding of applying microbial source tracking method to identify the sources of abiotic pollution like sediment phosphorus.

Abstract:Excessive phosphorus (P) loadings cause major pollution concerns in large catchments. Quantifying the point and nonpoint P sources of large catchments is essential for catchment P management. Although phosphate oxygen isotopes (δ18O(PO4)) can reveal P sources and P cycling in catchments, quantifying multiple P sources in a whole catchment should be a research focus. Therefore, this study aimed to quantitatively identify the proportions of multiple potential end members in a typical large catchment (the Yangtze River Catchment) by combining the phosphate oxygen isotopes, land use type, mixed end-element model, and a Bayesian model. The δ18O(PO4) values of river water varied spatially from 4.9‰ to18.3‰ in the wet season and 6.0‰ to 20.9‰ in the dry season. Minor seasonal differences but obvious spatial changes in δ18O(PO4) values could illustrate how human activity changed the functioning of the system. The results of isotopic mass balance and the Bayesian model confirmed that controlling agricultural P from fertilizers was the key to achieving P emission reduction goals by reducing P inputs. Additionally, the effective rural domestic sewage treatment, development of composting technology, and resource utilization of phosphogypsum waste could also contribute to catchment P control. P sources in catchment ecosystems can be assessed by coupling an isotope approach and multiple-models.

Abstract:We investigated the distributions of phosphate (PO4-P) and used the oxygen isotope composition of phosphate (δ18OP) to quantify PO4-P sources in the waters of Huangbai River. According to the environmental characteristics of Huangbai River basin, the sampling stations in the Huangbai River were divided into three groups: sampling stations in the phosphate mining area, in the outcrop area of phosphate rock, and in the residential/agricultural area. The average PO4-P concentration was highest (2.34 ± 1.00 μmol/L) in the outcrop area of phosphate ore, intermediate in the residential/agricultural area (1.06 ± 1.21 μmol/L), and lowest in the phosphate mining area (0.58 ± 0.31 μmol/L). The δ18OP measured in the Huangbai River waters ranged from 6.0 to 20.9‰, with the highest average value in the outcrop area of phosphate rock (average: 14.6‰ ± 3.1‰). The majority of the measured δ18OP values in the Huangbai River deviated greatly from the expected equilibrium values, indicating that δ18OP in this area could be used to trace PO4-P sources. We used two end-member mixing models to quantify the contribution of PO4-P from different sources. In the phosphate mining area, the average fractions of PO4-P from phosphate ore and sewage were 49.5% ± 23.8% and 50.5% ± 23.8%, respectively. In the outcrop area of phosphate rock, the average fractions of PO4-P from phosphate ore and sewage were 60.1% ± 21.7% and 39.9% ± 21.7%, respectively. In the residential/agricultural area, the average fractions of PO4-P from fertilizer and sewage were 49.2% ± 23.2% and 50.8% ± 23.2%, respectively. These results indicate that phosphate mining activities was not an important source for PO4-P in the waters of Huangbai River. The natural weathering of phosphate rock, fertilization, and domestic sewage contributed more to the high PO4-P concentrations in the Huangbai River waters.

Abstract:Lake Dianchi is one of the most phosphorus-polluted lakes in China. Understanding its phosphorus budget and the corresponding limitations for research are fundamental to lake management. We have therefore systematically analyzed publications and publicly available datasets regarding Dianchi P pollution since the year 1960 to explore the anthropogenic perturbation on phosphorus budget dynamics. Results show that current exogenous loading (> 600 tons ⋅a−1) remains significant; inflow rivers and drainage pipes around the lakeshore are the main pathways (accounting for around 80% of loading). Besides shifts in the spatial–temporal pattern of exogenous loading, artificial treatments have also reshaped P removal patterns; consequently, only a small amount of P can be removed through lake outflows (<20%, around 140 tons ⋅a−1). Although a reduction has been observed in exogenous P loading over the past decade, endogenous P loading has significantly increased, of which P flux via sediment release alone approximates more than 180 tons ⋅a−1 in 2017. Generally, P budget improvements have been due to artificial treatments such as the Niulan River water diversion project, shifting directions on tail water emissions, and sediment dredging projects. However, these treatments also introduce negative consequences and therefore require further caution. The reuse of ”waste P” via treatments has especially become a challenge. To date, exogenous loading via atmospheric dry deposition, wintering birds, water diversion, degradation in geological phosphorus-rich regions and endogenous P cycling fluxes, etc., need further study. Here, suggestions for corresponding research are given. It is suggested that the restoration of spontaneous ”P balance” in the Dianchi system, and the modification of the regional urban development strategy should present issues facing plateau freshwater lakes in SW China which need to be addressed. Moreover, synthesized analyses and machine learning processes are new attempts worth promoting to other lakes where monitoring data is incomplete.
A Modelling Framework to Track Phosphorus Sources of the Drinking Water Intakes in a Large Eutrophic Lake

Abstract:Excess phosphorus (P) in freshwater lakes is a global challenge due to its potential cause of harmful algal blooms threating drinking water safety. However, quantifying the P sources for a specific site in a large lake is extremely challenging due to the complex interaction between internal and external P loading to surface water. To address this challenge, this study developed a modelling framework to track P sources of two drinking water intakes in a large shallow lake (Lake Taihu) in China. The framework proposed a new-developed index (PSCI, P source contribution index) to quantify the contributions of various P sources for the drinking water intakes. PSCI was derived by a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model that describes the complex processes of P sources, sinks and transportation in both horizontal and vertical directions within the lake. Application of the framework to these two drinking water intakes (Jinshu and Shangshan) achieved a surprising finding that in-ternal P loading from sediment was a significant P source with a contribution as high as 47.1% and 30.4%, respectively. Central Lake Taihu had a large contribution of 49.5% and 68.3% for Jinshu and Shangshan, and inflow river (Wangyu River) had a contribution of < 5%. The high contribution of internal P loading was mainly due to the sediment P accumulation for years and large external P loading. Our study highlighted the important role of internal P loading affecting the P concentration of drinking water intake in a large eutrophic lake, and demonstrated the high value of the modelling framework in quantifying the P sources for a specific site (e.g., drinking water intake) in a lake.

Abstract:Endogenous phosphorus release from sediments is a major cause of eutrophication in water bodies. To investigate the endogenous phosphorus morphological features and migration patterns in lakes under the influence of agricultural irrigation areas, we analyzed the changes of polymorphic phosphorus content in lake sediments under irrigation withdrawal conditions based on field sampling tests and sediment phosphorus release dynamics simulation experiments and used the diffusive flux method to determine the flux of phosphorus release from the sediment–water interface (SWI). The results showed that: (1) Data from encrypted sampling during the receding period revealed total phosphorus (TP) of lake water decreased from 0.11 mg/L to 0.05 mg/L, and TP of sediment increased from 723.53 mg/kg to 955.89 mg/kg. (2) The order of polymorphic phosphorus content of sediments at the lake inlet before the irrigation period was Fe-Al bound phosphorus (NaOH–nrP) > insoluble phosphorus > Fe–Al oxide bound phosphorus (NaOH–rP) > Calcium bound phosphorus (Ca–P) > Fe–Mn chelated phosphorus (BD–P) > active phosphorus. Interconversion between sedimentary polymorphic phosphorus is more drastic after the irrigation period. (3) The phosphorus forms extracted from sediments were ranked as insoluble phosphorus > NaOH–nrP > NaOH–rP > active phosphorus > Ca-P > BD-P. Insoluble phosphorus is the predominant form of phosphorus in sediments. (4) The TP exchange fluxes between the SWI by the diffusive flux method were 0.30 mg/(m2·h) and -0.33 mg/(m2·h) respectively. Receding water conditions promote sediment adsorption of TP from overlying water. The research findings establish a theoretical foundation for endogenous phosphorus from lake sediments in agricultural irrigation areas.

Abstract:Dongping Lake is an important regulator for the Eastern Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China, and the water quality assurance of it is of great importance. To investigate the distribution characteristics and burial process of phosphorus (P) in Dongping Lake as well as their relationship with regional economic development and human activities, 33 spatially distributed surface sediment samples and one lake sediment core were extracted from Dongping Lake. A harmonized procedure for the P forms in freshwater sediments developed by the European Programme, Standards, Measurements, and Testing was used in this paper. The results show that NaOH–P (P bound to Al, Fe, Mn oxides or hydroxides), HCl–P (Ca-bound P), inorganic phosphorus (IP), organic phosphorus (OP), and total phosphorus (TP) in the surface sediments show a strong spatial variability. The highest NaOH–P and OP concentrations were observed in the eastern and south-eastern region of the lake and decreased gradually away from the mouth area of Dawen River. We deduced that anthropogenic input via the Dawen River is the main contributor. The higher concentration of HCl–P occurred in the north-west region of the lake and increased in a gradient away from the mouth area of Dawen River, and this pattern of distribution could be related to grain-size effects and higher transport energies close to riverine inlets. Pollution reflected by phosphorus in the core sediments of Dongping Lake is well consistent with the economic development history of Dongping County. From the beginning of the 20th century to the middle 1970s, the concentrations of each P speciation did not vary largely and runoff of the Yellow River mainly contributed to the P accumulation in the sediment, which might reflect the background values of them in the lake in pre-industrial period. The stable Mz (mean grain size), low loss-on-ignition (LOI), and high sedimentary flux also support this. The rapid increase of NaOH–P and OP at 10–0 cm (especially 5–0 cm) indicates the enhancing anthropogenic eutrophication since the middle 1970s. The LOI peak period and a coarsening of particle size also support this interpretation. However, the decreasing of TP and HCl–P was attributed to the change in sediment supply. As due to construction of dams around the lake, runoff of the Dawen River mainly contributed to the P accumulation in the sediment during this period.
Tracing the sources of phosphorus along the salinity gradient in a coastal estuary using multi-isotope proxies

Abstract:Eutrophication in coastal water has compromised ecosystem services. Identification of phosphorus (P) sources and their load contributions are required for the development of effective nutrient management plans. In this research, multi-isotope proxies were applied to track P sources and evaluate their relative contributions in Love Creek, a coastal estuary in Delaware. The isotope values of carbon (ca. −22‰), nitrogen (ca.+6‰), and phosphate oxygen (ca.+18‰) of agricultural soils under different agricultural practices are generally similar even though their concentrations are distinctly different from forest soils (δ13C: ca. −27‰; δ13N: ca.+2‰; δ18OP: ca.+22‰). Comparison of these parameters among potential land sources (agricultural soils, forest soils, septic wastes, and plant debris) and sink (colloids in water) revealed that the plant debris and soils from forest sources are likely dominant sources of P in freshwater sites. The contribution of terrestrial P sources gradually decreased along the salinity gradient and agricultural soil sources gradually dominanted in the saline water portion of the creek. The variations of P loads due to weather-related discharge, changing land use and activities, and seasons were high and reflected the limitation of accurate estimation of sources. Overall, these results provide improved insights into potential sources and biogeochemical processes in the estuary, which are expected to be useful for water quality monitoring programs.

A novel pretreatment method for analysis the oxygen isotopic compositions of inorganic phosphorus pools in freshwater sediment

Abstract:Identifying the sources and cycling of phosphorus (P) is particularly important for formulating effective P management strategies in inland water. The oxygen isotopic compositions of phosphate (δ18OP) are recognized as a promising tool to solve this problem. However, the application of δ18OP in freshwater sediment is currently constrained by multiple difficulties. In this study, we presented a novel pretreatment method for δ18OP analysis of sediment inorganic P pools. Our results showed that the new method has advantages of simple operation, less time-consuming, and high P recovery rates. Specifically, we replaced the traditional Mg-induced co-precipitation (MAGIC) method by introducing Zr-Oxides gels with high selective adsorption function for phosphate. This made subsequent processing simpler and reduced the time consumption to ∼10 days, and the range of P recovery rates were from 88 % to 104 %. Furthermore, we emphasized the necessity of vacuum roasting following lyophilized Ag3PO4 to eliminate residual oxygen-containing impurities (e.g., NO3-, Ag2O, and organic matter). Additionally, evidences from microscopy and spectroscopy confirmed that this method ultimately yielded high-purity Ag3PO4 with the Ag:P molar ratios of 3.35:1. Importantly, combining direct synthesis Ag3PO4 between KH2PO4 and AgNO3 with the Ag3PO4 obtained by the method revealed no stark oxygen isotopic fractionation of phosphate during the pretreatment processes. The newly established δ18OP pretreatment methods here can also be extended to broader studies of the biogeochemical cycling of P in aquatic ecosystems, potentially advancing the understanding of the global P cycle.

Abstract:The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the distribution of total P (TP), inorganic P, organic P, ammonium (NH 4 + –N), and nitrate (NO 3 − –N). The results revealed that regions with internal-source pollutants contained the highest concentration of TP, Ca–P, and Fe–P with high concentrations. L–P, Al–P, mostly organic P, and soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), the region with internal-source pollutants were lower than that with the imported-source pollutant. The concentration of dissolved NH 4 + –N showed high in regions with imported-source pollutants, however, in regions with internal-source pollutants, the dissolved NO 3 − –N was with the highest concentration. Overall, P from upstream was still dominant in the sediments despite uptake by the aquatic plants. SRP showed high concentration in regions with imported-source pollutants due to the imported pollution and the improved bioavailability by plant root exudates. Feces and feed residues from aquatic livestock breeding resulted in the highest concentration of TN, NH 4 + –N, and dissolved NO 3 −– N in the sediments of the region with internal-source pollutants. High concentrations of dissolved NH 4 + –N were due to the input of N from imported source pollutants. This study provides insights into the contributions of P and N to the eutrophication of the water-carrying lake.

Abstract:The thin soil layer with uneven distribution in karst areas facilitates the migration of phosphorus (P) to groundwater, threatening the safety of water sources seriously. To offer a scientific guidance for water pollution control and land use planning in karst areas, this study examined the relationships between land use and P in groundwater and surface water, and quantified the phosphate sources in Gaoping river basin, a small typical watershed in karst areas. Spatial distribution analysis revealed that the highest mean P concentrations in groundwater and surface water were in farmland and construction-farmland zones, respectively. Land use impact analysis showed that the concentration of P in groundwater was influenced positively by farmland but negatively by forest land. In contrast, the concentration of P in surface water was influenced positively by both farmland and construction land. The mixed end-element and Bayesian-based Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) model results showed that agricultural fertilizers were the main phosphate source for groundwater in farmland and forest-farmland zones, while urban sewage was the main source in the construction-farmland zone. For surface water, the main phosphate source was agricultural fertilizers in both farmland and construction-farmland zones. This study indicates that controlling P pollution in local water bodies should pay close attention to the management of land use related to human activities, including regulating sewage discharge from construction land and agricultural fertilizer usage.

Abstract:Phosphorus content and its species were studied for the surface sediments of Nansihu Lake and its main inflow rivers, and the core sediments of Dushan Lake and Weishan Lake, using the SMT sequential extraction method. The phosphorus contents in the surface sediment are 465.5-13068.3 mg/kg, with the maximum value in Laoyun River, which was due to the waste water pollution from Jining City. The enrichment factors of organic phosphorus (OP) and NaOH-P are 6.5 and 9.0, respectively. The contents of phosphorus in other surface sediments are relatively lower, and are mainly composed of HCl-P. The enrichment factors of NaOH-P and OP are 1.0-3.7 and 1.3-6.0, indicating a minor human pollution. The higher organic matter content aggravated the enrichment of OP. The phosphorus in the core sediment of Dushan Lake and Weishan Lake are mainly composed of HCl-P and OP. The increasing content of TOC in the core sediments was due to the growth of aquatic productivity and organic matter decomposition during the early diagenesis process, which also induced the increase of OP in the sediments since late 1960s. The higher content of OP and NaOH-P in the sediments of 6-0 cm and 5-0 cm for Cores DU3 and WS4 also indicated the human contamination since mid 1980s.

Abstract:An innovative approach was developed to reveal phosphorus (P) transport and redistribution in large and complex river networks in the Lake Taihu basin by establishing the relations between sediment P spatial distribution and P sorption behavior on particles with different grain size, sorted by hydrodynamics. The sediment P fractionation composition changed greatly across the basin, where 69% consisted of acid-soluble fractions (HCl-P) in upstream rivers while 70% was in fractions associated with reducible metal hydroxides (BD-P) and amorphous hydroxides (NaOH25-P) in downstream rivers. Fine particles enriched in BD-P and NaOH25-P fractions tended to sorb liberated P during the resuspension process, and fine particles were more easily delivered downstream toward the lake, forming a sieved transport of P in the river networks. This will lead to a great potential for sediment P release when environmental anoxia develops in the sediments or high pH occurs in the sediment surface during intensive algal blooms in the shallow lake. Reduction of external P from point sources from urbanized areas is an important requirement at the basin scale; however, long-term efforts are needed to restore aquatic macrophytes in the lake, which would decrease P recycling rates at the water-sediment interface.

Abstract:As one of the essential components in ecosystems, lakes play a major role in the global phosphorus (P) cycle. It is helpful for further understanding of the inside lake P geochemical cycle to research P pollution and storage in lakes, which is of positive significance for lake eutrophication restoration. In this study, we investigated the total phosphorus concentrations (TPC) of water and sediments from 37 lakes in the Eastern Plain Lake Zone (EPL) of China, evaluated the P pollution degree of lakes, and estimated P storage in lake sediments with quantitative data of lake area and number. The results indicate that the total phosphorus concentrations of water (TPCW) and total phosphorus concentrations of the surface sediments (0-1 cm, TPCSS) in EPL were high, the mean values were 0.11 mg·L-1 and 869.85 mg·kg-1 respectively, with obvious differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between different river basins. Over half (56.76% and 70.27% respectively) of the lakes reached severe pollution levels in water and surface sediments. There were 16224 lakes (> 0.01 km2) with a total area of 21662.37 km2 in the EPL, and the P storage in the lake sediments (0-30 cm) was about 4.87 ± 2.08 Tg (1 Tg = 1 × 1012 g), accounting for about 2.74% of the basin soil. TPCW and TPCSS of lakes in the EPL were significantly positively correlated, may suggest a close nutrient cycling relationship between the lake water and the sediment. During periods of high winds and waves, the stored P in the top sediments in the EPL may continue to participate in the internal P geochemical cycle and migrate to the overlying water, posing a potential pollution hazard. Therefore, it is crucial to take into account the sediment P pools when formulating effective lake phosphorus management strategies.
