Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are insidious plastic particles with sizes ranging from 1 to 5000 μm. Their presence has been reported all over the world. Recently, bioremediation to remove MPs from water columns using filter feeders as biofilters has been proposed. In a previous lab experiment, the MP bioremediation potential of four fouling organisms from a mariculture facility (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Sabella spallanzanii, Phallusia mammillata, Paraleucilla magna) was separately assessed in single-species experiment. Herein, a follow-up of the work is presented using a multi-species approach. The four organisms were placed together in the same 5 L beaker and fed with a concentration of 250 p/L 6 μm red polystyrene discernible particles. After digesting the organisms and counting the MPs in both the water and the organisms, the results of the two experiments were compared. In the previous experiment, S. spallanzanii had the highest particle retention (PR) value (PR = 88.01%), while in this experiment, P. mammillata has the lowest PR value (PR = 31%). The multi-species approach resulted in a higher number of plastics being removed from the water (88%) compared to the single-species experiments. These fouling organisms naturally exist as a community, acting as an efficient filter with complex morphologies and hydrodynamic features. Here, this simple marine animal forest is re-evaluated by exploiting the ecosystem services provided by these organisms as a solution to MP pollution problem in a mariculture environment.

Abstract:Several reports have suggested that chronic haloperidol (HAL) treatment induces ultrastructural changes in synapses of substantia nigra, corpus striatum, and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of rat brain. The effects of HAL on specific cortical transmitter systems, however, are not well characterized. Recent studies have indicated that there may be a loss of gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic cells in anterior cingulate cortex of schizophrenic subjects and this hypothesis has prompted interest in the question of whether dopamine receptor antagonists, such as HAL, may influence the activity of this transmitter system. This current report describes a quantitative light microscopic analysis of GABA‐immunolabeled axosomatic terminals in mPFC of rats treated with HAL decanoate (0.5 mg/kg/day, i.m.) for a period of 4 months. GABA‐containing terminals were visualized with an avidin‐biotin immunoperoxidase method for localizing anti‐GABA antibodies. Computer‐assisted image processing was employed to determine the total number of pixels representing GABA‐immunoreaction product in axon terminals that were in direct apposition to pyramidal cell bodies. Drug‐treated animals showed a significant increase in the number of pixels representing GABA‐immunoreaction product in axosomatic terminals of layers II, III, V, and VI (93%, 63%, 31%, and 43%, respectively). These data are consistent with the idea that chronic HAL administration may be associated with a significant increase in the amount of GABA present in terminals surrounding pyramidal neurons of rat mPFC. The fact that GABA‐containing terminals showed the greatest increase in layer II is not consistent with the known distribution of dopamine afferents to this region which is lowest in superficial laminae. Based on the laminar distribution of non‐dopaminergic receptor types that have a high affinity for HAL, the effect of this drug on GABAergic transmission could potentially involve changes that are mediated through mechanisms in which 5‐HT2 or sigma opiate receptors play a role. © 1994 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are polluting the Arctic, but our understanding of their abundance, distribution, and sources is limited. This study quantified MPs down to 10 μm in marine waters of the most populated region in Greenland. A new plastic-free pump-filter system was used to collect MPs from surface waters in the fjord Nuup Kangerlua close to Nuuk. Additionally, we took samples by horizontal tows with a bongo net (300 μm mesh-size). The median concentrations were 142 MP m−3 and 0.12 MP m−3 in the pump and bongo samples, respectively. The most abundant polymer was polyester across stations and sampling types. Fibers were the dominant shape in the bongo samples, while non-fibrous particles dominated in the pump samples. MP abundance was lower in the fjord and increased close to Nuuk and towards the open ocean, indicating that Nuuk is an important point source for MPs. In both samples, concentrations of MPs increased with decreasing size, illustrating the importance of quantifying the smallest fraction of MPs. Thus, the use of methods allowing for a quantification of the smallest MPs is vital to reduce the underestimation of MP concentrations in the environment. The smallest size fraction is also most available to plankton-feeding marine invertebrates and an important entry point for MPs into marine food webs. At the found concentrations, immediate adverse effects on the pelagic food webs are unlikely. However, growing anthropogenic activities could increase the risk of MPs to affect the sensitive Arctic ecosystem.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a worldwide issue in the marine environment. There is growing concern of consuming MPs through fish, yet the current contamination status of fish collected from the deep sea surrounding Japan remains limited. We present baseline data on MPs in commercially important fishes from the coastal and offshore waters near Kyushu, Japan (East China Sea). We examined the MPs in the digestive tracts of two pelagic (n = 150 in total) and five demersal species (n = 235 in total). The fish were caught by pole and line, and bottom trawl at different geographical positions. The MPs in pelagic fish (39.1 %) were higher than demersal fish (10.3 %) and of larger sizes. The MPs correlated with habitat depth and type. There was species variation in the shape and polymer composition of MPs. These results increase our understanding of the heterogeneous uptake of MPs by fishes.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are universally present in the ecosystem and pose great threats to the environment and living organisms. Research studies have shown that small MPs (<50 mu m in diameter) are especially toxic and account for more than half of all MPs collected in the Atlantic Ocean. Nevertheless, current methods for the detection and analysis of MPs are incapable of achieving rapid and in situ analysis of small MPs in the biota to ultimately enable the study of their biological effects. In this work, we report a method that allows rapid in situ identification and spatial mapping of small MPs directly from paramecia with high accuracy by acquiring chemical composition information using secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) imaging. Specifically, six types of common MPs (polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyglycidyl methacrylate, and polyamide 6) with a diameter of 1-50 mu m were simultaneously imaged with high chemical specificity at a spatial resolution of 700 nm. In situ spatial mapping of a group of MPs ingested by paramecia was performed using SIMS fragments specific to the plastic composition with no sample pretreatment, revealing the aggregation of MPs in paramecia after ingestion. Compared with existing methods, one additional advantage of the developed method is that the MPs and the organism can be analyzed in the same experimental workflow to record their fingerprint spectra, acquiring biochemical information to evaluate MP fate, toxicity, and the MP-biota interaction.

Abstract:A new technique involving large-volume (10 m3) samples of seawater was used to determine the abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the water column in the West Pacific Ocean and the East Indian Ocean. Compared to the conventional sampling methods based on smaller volumes of water, the new data yielded abundance values for the deep-water column that were at least 1–2 orders of magnitude lower. The data suggested that limited bulk volumes currently used for surface sampling are insufficient to obtain accurate estimates of MP abundance in deep water. Size distribution data indicated that the lateral movement of MPs into the water column contributed to their movement from the surface to the bottom. Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a global emerging threat to aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide. Though the number of publications and interest to the MP research have been increased rapidly, it is still hamper to compare the obtained data due to the usage of different methodologies in MP assay. Thus, there is an urgent need for a standardized approach to the procedures of MP quantification in order to produce comparative assessments. In this pilot study, the conventional NOAA protocol of MP extraction from seawater was combined with a simple and inexpensive method for analyzing shape and size spectrum of all MP particles making up the sample. A common flatbed scanner equipped with slide adapter was applied for image acquisition while MP dispersive properties (particle abundance, shape and size spectrum) were quantified using ImageJ software. Feret’s diameter and circularity (or roundness) appeared to be the most efficient shape descriptors for the particle analysis. The total silhouette area of MP particles was shown to produce a confident approximation of the MP overall mass. The first reliable estimates of MP concentrations in the Black Sea coastal waters (Sevastopol Bay) accounted for 0.6 to 7 items m-3 and 6 to750 μg m-3 in terms of abundance and mass, respectively. No steady-state gradients have been revealed in MP distribution along the transect from the mouth of the bay to its corner. Inflow of MP to the bay waters and their transport along the bay seemed to be controlled by a complex combination of factors including rainfalls, wind regimes, currents and the Black river discharge.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can adsorb heavy metals and metalloids and may cause a potential health hazard. Precise measurements of their size, shape, composition, and concentration at a single-MP level are important to evaluate their potential toxicity and identify their original source. However, current single-MP analytical methods such as micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy have low throughput. Therefore, in this study, we applied the ion current sensing method, which has been used for single cell analysis, to single-MP analysis and examined whether size measurement and composition analysis of MPs at the single particle level are possible. In single-MP measurements, plastic particles must be mono-dispersed in solution at least within the measurement time. The agglomeration behavior was carefully observed after adding sodium dodecyl sulfate to tris-borate-EDTA buffer at 2–16 mM. Under these conditions, the size of polystyrene beads could be measured using the ion current sensing under the mono-dispersed condition. Next, ion current sensing was performed on four pseudo MPs fabricated from different materials (polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride) that were mechanically grazed and UV-irradiated to imitate real marine MPs. Although significant differences in the ion current signals from different material MPs were not observed, fast (100 MPs within 2 s) and precise measurements in the MPs’ sizes at a single-MP level were successfully achieved.

Abstract:The seabed is regarded as an important reservoir for microplastics (MPs), leading to an elevated likelihood of ingestion by benthic fauna, subsequently establishing a pathway for the incorporation of microplastics into the marine food web. However, benthic faunal contamination has rarely been investigated by previous studies. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the distribution, composition, and dynamics of MPs in both the abiotic and biotic components of the seabed. In this study, water, sediment, and macrofauna samples from four stations in Tokyo Bay were collected in July 2021, and MPs were analyzed by micro-Fourier transform infrared (µFTIR) spectroscopy. It was found that MPs concentrations in water, sediments, and macrofauna were 221 ± 189 pcs L-1, 17 ± 8.0 pcs g-1, and 4.8 ± 5.3 pcs ind-1, respectively, and sizes peaked between 40–60 µm for water samples and 30–50 µm for sediments. Polyethylene (PE) and copolymer recorded higher abundances in sediment and water, while PE and polyamide (PA) dominated MPs ingested by macrofauna. Of the sampled fauna, 90% had ingested MP particles. Deposit feeders had the highest number of MPs per individual, followed by predators and filter feeders; however, no indication of bioaccumulation was observed. This research presents a pioneering investigation into MP pollution within Tokyo Bay’s benthic environment, focusing on abiotic and biotic fractions which has not been previously undertaken in this region. The adoption of trophic approach in unveiling the patterns of MP pollution provides insights into the ecological implication of MPs contamination in benthic ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is a rising environmental concern. This study investigated MP concentrations in Tokyo Bay using neuston net for surface sampling and deep-sea plankton pump for underwater sampling across six stations at multiple depths. Results revealed substantial variation in MP concentrations. Surface large microplastics (LMP, > 350 μm) ranged from 0.21 × 10-3 to 3.34 × 10-3 pieces L-1, averaging 1.26 × 10-3 pieces L-1, while surface small microplastics (SMP, 60 μm to 350 μm) were highest at head of the bay (11.5 ± 3.05 pieces L-1). SMP concentrations varied with depth and position, peaking at center of the bay (5.79 ± 1.63 pieces L-1 at 2 m). Additionally, the total amount of surface LMP was estimated at 10.3 m3 and SMP at 15.0 m3 in the Tokyo Bay. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the spatial and vertical distribution of MP in Tokyo Bay.

Abstract:Little information concerning microplastic (MP) pollution in the deep ocean is currently available, and a huge gap exists between sampling methodology and obtaining an authentic dataset. Verified sampling methodology is a fundamental step in the accurate determination of MP pollution in the pelagic environment, of which sample volume is a crucial factor. To address this methodological challenge, in situ filtration technology, a novel sampling method for microplastics in the water column, was proposed and investigated. On 27 April 2019, we took the East China Sea as a typical example in order to determine the relationship between sample volume and MP abundance. Analysis indicated that the filtrated volume has an impact on MP quantification and significant exponential regression between the sample volume and MPs was observed. This investigation indicated that a small volume sample could easily lead to MP overestimation, with at least 8 m3 water required to obtain reliable data.

Abstract:Marine microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a growing severe environmental concern. The vertical distribution pattern of MPs in the ocean is still elusive. Meanwhile, different sampling methods have been deployed in previous studies, resulting in difficulties in compiling data. In this study, for the first time, we explored ocean interior MP pollution in the Western Pacific Warm Pool simultaneously using both a CTD (Conductivity-temperature-depth) sampler and a large-volume in-situ filtration system. At the same sampling station, the average abundance of microplastics in the water column obtained by the two sampling methods was 0.37 ± 0.44 n/m3 (in-situ filtration) and 115.12 ± 64.13 n/m3 (CTD), respectively, which showed significant differences. Both methods found that the main chemical composition and shape of MPs were PET and fiber. Ocean current was identified as the dominant factor that impacted the horizontal distribution of MPs in the study area. The abundance of MPs in the surface layer was 5.4-703.8 times higher than that of the water column. The similar physical and chemical properties of MPs in the surface water and water column indicated that MPs in the water column originate from the sustained release from the surface layer.

Abstract:Data on MP in aquatic environments have low resolution in space and time. Scaling up sampling and increasing analysis throughput are the main bottlenecks. We combined two approaches: an uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) and near infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) for sampling and analysis of MP > 300 μm. We collected 35 water samples over 4 d in a coastal area. Samples were analyzed using NIR-HSI and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Spiked samples were used to determine recovery. We conclude that using a USV can mitigate issues of traditional trawls like scalability, repeatability, and contamination. NIR-HSI detects more polyethylene but less polypropylene than FTIR analysis and reduces analysis time significantly. Highly variable concentrations were found at both sampling locations, with mean MP concentration of 0.28 and 0.01 MP m -3 for location A and B respectively. USV sampling in tandem with NIR-HSI is an effective analytical pipeline for MP monitoring.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) (plastic particles < 5 mm in size) have become the most ubiquitous type of anthropogenic litter contaminating aquatic environments worldwide, and are capable of harming aquatic organisms and entering the food web. Microplastic research has rapidly evolved over several decades, with many studies sampling microplastic in surface waters. For sea surface sampling of MPs, different net devices have been used. But although there is an increasing number of studies using these devices to quantifying MPs in different aquatic environments, data comparison is difficult due to the lack of standardised, harmonised sampling methods and data reporting units. The Manta net device is actually the most commonly used method for sea surface sampling of MPs. The three main parts of this net are: the floating/stabilizing part, the opening mouth and the net bag, and each of them can have its own specifications. These specifications, along with the sampling methods, can be critical for the efficiency of the sampling accurate quantification of MPs in the aquatic environments. The use of different mesh sizes, inconsistency in trawling duration, speed and distance, and in the net opening dimensions, make it impossible to compare the studies between each other. This review analyzes the methodologies and characteristics of Manta nets used for MPs sampling, discussing factors that can impact the efficiency of the sampling and the quantification of MPs, and proposes recommendations in order to improve and standardize the sampling protocol.

Abstract:The issue of microplastics (MPs) has emerged as a significant concern globally, with discussions surrounding the potential environmental impact of these tiny plastic particles becoming increasingly prevalent. This study aimed to identify the concentration and characteristics of MPs in hemolymph and organs (gills and hepatopancreas) of green mussels ( Perna viridis ) that are frequently consumed by people in Pangkajene Kepulauan, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Green mussels were collected from two different sampling sites for comparison. Screening was carried out on dispensed hemolymph and dissected organs to identify the characteristics of MPs. Surface seawater sampling was added as information on MP's characteristics from the mussel habitat. Visual observation of MP's characteristics using a stereomicroscope in laminar flow is to prevent contamination. The identification of MP's polymer type is using FTIR-ATR. The results showed that hemolymph, hepatopancreas, gills, and surface water were concentrated with MPs. Small (2–3.9 cm) green mussels accumulated more MPs than medium (4–5.9 cm) and large (> 6 cm). MPs characteristics of fiber shape, transparent color, and size 0.1–0.5 mm were dominant in all samples. A total of seven polymers of MPs were identified with polyethylene and polystyrene types most frequently found from all samples. Based on this study, green mussels are good for biomonitoring of MPs.
