Abstract:Introduction Arts engagement is a positive health behaviour that could support the mental and social well-being of ageing populations globally. However, research is predominantly from Western countries, leaving it unclear whether arts engagement can support well-being in Japan, where arts are differently valued and engaged with. The social gradient in arts engagement and well-being may also have led to an overestimation of the impact of participation on well-being in Western countries. We therefore tested whether participation in community arts and cultural groups was associated with subjective well-being and social support after removing confounding by demographic, socioeconomic and health-related factors in Japan and England. Methods We harmonised longitudinal data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) 2016 and 2019 waves and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) 2014 and 2018 waves to enable cross-country comparisons. We included 9511 adults aged ≥65 years from JAGES and 3133 participants aged ≥65 years from ELSA. Using inverse probability-weighted regression adjustment, we estimated the effect of arts and cultural groups on subsequent life satisfaction, happiness and depressive symptoms (subjective well-being) as well as social support. Results In JAGES, arts and cultural group participation was associated with higher odds of life satisfaction and higher social support scores. In ELSA participants aged ≥65 years, group participation was only associated with higher depressive symptoms. But, in a sensitivity analysis with the full ELSA sample aged ≥50 years (n=5128), this association was no longer present. Instead, group participation was associated with higher social support scores. Conclusion Our findings indicate that arts and cultural group participation can enhance life satisfaction and social support in Japan, with small but more consistent benefits than in England. Facilitating participation in arts and cultural groups could help older adults to maintain a healthy social support network, which may further support their health as they age.
Art and cultural activity engagement and depressive symptom onset among older adults: A longitudinal study from the Japanese Gerontological Evaluation Study

Abstract:Objectives: Art and cultural activities can benefit mental health. However, there is insufficient evidence on active engagement in art and cultural activities for preventing depressive symptoms among older adults. Therefore, we examined the association of active engagement in art and cultural activities with depressive symptom onset among older adults using 3-year longitudinal data. Methods: This longitudinal study recruited non-institutionalised older adults independent in daily living from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) established in 2010, and those without depressive symptoms were followed for three years. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Active engagement in nine art and cultural activities, including Japanese traditional cultural activities, were evaluated (musical performance, singing, dancing, handicrafts, painting, photography, poetry composition, calligraphy, and tea ceremony/flower arrangement). Results: Ultimately, 37,627 older adults without depressive symptoms at baseline were analysed. The participants' mean age (standard deviation) was 72.6 (5.5) years, and 51.5% were female. During the follow-up period, depressive symptoms occurred in 3844 participants (10.2%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that active engagement in art and cultural activities was inversely associated with depressive symptom onset (odds ratio = 0.80, 95% confidence interval = 0.73-0.87, p < 0.001). This association was confirmed regardless of age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Among the activities, especially dancing and photography were protective against depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Active engagement in art and cultural activities may contribute to preventing depressive symptoms among older adults. Promoting art and cultural engagement could be important to protect their mental health.
Cultural Engagement and Incidence of Cognitive Impairment: A 6-year Longitudinal Follow-up of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES)

Abstract:Background: Active engagement in intellectually enriching activities reportedly lowers the risk of cognitive decline; however, few studies have examined this association, including engagement in traditional cultural activities. This study aimed to elucidate the types of cultural engagement associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment. Methods: We examined the association between cultural engagement and cognitive impairment using Cox proportional hazards models in a cohort of 44,985 participants (20,772 males and 24,213 females) aged 65 years or older of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study from 2010 to 2016. Intellectual activities (eg, reading books, magazines, and/or newspapers), creative activities (eg, crafts and painting), and traditional cultural activities (eg, poetry composition [haiku], calligraphy, and tea ceremony/flower arrangement) were included among cultural engagement activities. Results: Over a follow-up period of 6 years, incident cognitive disability was observed in 4,198 respondents (9.3%). After adjusting for potential confounders, such as depression and social support, intellectual activities were protectively associated with the risk of cognitive impairment (hazard ratio [HR] for those who read and stated that reading was their hobby, 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.66-0.85 and HR for those who read but did not consider reading a hobby, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.65-0.80). Engagement in creative activities was also significantly correlated with lower risk of cognitive impairment (crafts: HR 0.71; 95% CI, 0.62-0.81 and painting: HR 0.80; 95% CI, 0.66-0.96). The association between traditional cultural activities and the risk of cognitive impairment was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Engagement in intellectual and creative activities may be associated with reduced risk of dementia.

Abstract:There is growing evidence for the impact of arts engagement on later life cognition. However, confounding by socioeconomic factors may have led to an overestimation of this association. We analyzed data from 4,344 older adults in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. We measured participatory (e.g. painting, making music, crafts) and receptive (e.g. concert, play, museum) arts engagement separately. Participants completed six neurocognitive tests measuring two distinct domains of cognitive function (episodic/working memory and executive function/language) concurrently and seven years later. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to remove confounding by a range of demographic and socioeconomic factors. Engaging in participatory or receptive arts for up to one hour per week (but not more frequently) was associated with better subsequent executive function/language. Similarly, engaging in receptive arts activities for up to three hours per week (but not more frequently) was associated with better subsequent episodic/working memory. These effects were of similar sizes to doing vigorous physical activity for up to one hour per week. However, our findings also highlight key methodological issues when exploring the relationship between arts engagement and cognition that should be considered in future studies, including measurement bias, life-course stage, length of follow-up, variation in outcomes, attrition, and missing data.

Cultural engagement and prevalence of pain in socially isolated older people: a longitudinal modified treatment policy approach

Abstract:Background: It remains uncertain whether cultural engagement positively influences the reduction of pain risk, particularly depending on the social isolation status. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of cultural engagement on the reduction of pain prevalence over a 6-year follow-up period among older people, particularly those experiencing different dimensions of social isolation. Methods: This study was a prospective longitudinal study. We analysed the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing cohort, consisting of 6468 community-dwelling adults aged ≥50 years old who provided data in waves 6 (2012-2013), 7 (2014-2015), 8 (2016-2017), and 9 (2018-2019). Self-reported cultural engagement (going to museums, art galleries, exhibitions, the theatre, concerts, or the opera) measured in waves 6-8 was used as the exposure variable. Meanwhile self-reported moderate-to-severe pain in wave 9 was used as the outcome variable. Social isolation was considered in waves 6-8, and the possibility of effect modification was captured by assessing each component of the social isolation index: not married or cohabiting with a partner, fewer than monthly contact with children/other immediate family/friends, and not engaging in any organisations, religious groups, or committees. Findings: The estimated pain prevalence was 29.2% (95% confidence interval, 28.1-30.3; reference) after adjusting for time-variant, time-invariant, and loss to follow-up factors. Cultural engagement led to a reduction in pain prevalence to 24.1% for all individuals, representing a decrease of 5.1% (95% confidence interval, 0.6-9.6; P-value, 0.03). In older people who were not married or cohabiting, cultural engagement resulted in a decrease in pain prevalence to 25.8%, a reduction of 3.4% (95% confidence interval, 0.4-6.4; P-value, 0.01). For those with less frequent contact with close family members, the pain prevalence decreased to 25.3%, a reduction of 3.9% (95% confidence interval, 0.2-7.6; P-value, 0.03). Meanwhile, other dimensions of social isolation did not show a significant reduction in pain prevalence. Interpretation: Cultural engagement may help to reduce the risk of pain in socially isolated older adults. Those who were single or living alone and had less frequent contact with immediate family were particularly vulnerable. While cultural engagement might help certain socially isolated older people feel better, its effectiveness varies, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between arts engagement, loneliness, and social support in adolescence

Abstract:Purpose: Although arts engagement holds promise for reducing loneliness and enhancing social support, previous research has focussed on older adults. We investigated whether arts engagement was associated with loneliness and social support during adolescence. Methods: We included 11,780 adolescents aged 11-21 years from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a nationally representative cohort study. We measured whether adolescents engaged in school-based arts activities (band, book club, chorus, choir, cheerleading, dance, drama club, newspaper, orchestra) at wave one (1994-1995). Loneliness and perceived social support from peers were measured at waves one and two (1996). We used logistic regression to test whether arts engagement was associated with concurrent and subsequent loneliness and social support. Results: Arts engagement was not associated with concurrent or subsequent loneliness. Compared to not engaging, doing one or more school-based arts activities was associated with 59% higher odds of high social support concurrently (odds ratio [OR] = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.32-1.91). However, this cross-sectional association was attenuated after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related covariates (adjusted OR [AOR] = 1.16, 95% CI = 0.95-1.42). In contrast, doing arts activities was associated with 28% higher odds of reporting high social support one year later (AOR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.03-1.59), independent of covariates and previous social support. Conclusions: Extracurricular arts activities are associated with increased odds of reporting good subsequent social support from peers. This may be because they provide opportunities for social engagement, developing friendships, and building a sense of community. Exploring these associations in more detail should be a priority, enabling better understanding of this strategy for enhancing social ties during adolescence.
Cultural engagement and incident depression in older adults: evidence from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Abstract:Background There is a recognised need for the identification of factors that might be protective against the development of depression in older adults. Over the past decade, there has been growing research demonstrating the effects of cultural engagement (which combines a number of protective factors including social interaction, cognitive stimulation and gentle physical activity) on the treatment of depression, but as yet not on its prevention. Aims To explore whether cultural engagement in older adults is associated with a reduced risk of developing depression over the following decade. Method Working with data from 2148 adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing who were free from depression at baseline, we used logistic regression models to explore associations between frequency of cultural engagement (including going to museums, theatre and cinema) and the risk of developing depression over the following 10 years using a combined index of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and physician-diagnosed depression. Results There was a dose–response relationship between frequency of cultural engagement and the risk of developing depression independent of sociodemographic, health-related and social confounders. This equated to a 32% lower risk of developing depression for people who attended every few months (odds ratio (OR) = 0.68, 95% CI 0.47–0.99, P = 0.046) and a 48% lower risk for people who attended once a month or more (OR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.34–0.80, P = 0.003). Results were robust to sensitivity analyses exploring reverse causality, subclinical depressive symptoms and alternative CES-D thresholds. Conclusions Cultural engagement appears to be an independent risk-reducing factor for the development of depression in older age. Declaration of interest None.

Social participation reduces isolation among Japanese older people in urban area: A 3-year longitudinal study

Abstract:Social isolation is a particular problem among older people and social participation may reduce future isolation. However, it is unclear which types of activities and which level of participation are effective. This study examines the relationship between social participation and isolation among Japanese older people by employing a 3-year longitudinal study.A mail survey was sent to 3,518 community-dwelling older people in an urban area in 2014 (baseline: BL). We then conducted follow-up mail survey on respondents who were non-isolated at BL in 2017 (follow-up: FL), with isolation being defined as being in contact with others less than once a week. An analysis was carried out on 1,070 subjects (398 men and 672 women). Social participation is defined by participation in group activities (community, senior club, hobbies, sports, volunteering, politics, industry, and religion). A logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the association between the types of social participation and the number of organization types at BL, and isolation at FL.At FL, 75 men (18.8%) and 59 women (8.8%) were considered to be isolated. Among the men, participation in a hobby group and sports group both significantly reduced the degree of isolation. Moreover, participation in two organizations and three or more organizations significantly lowered the risk of isolation when compared to non-participants. Among women, there were no significant associations among particular types of social activities and isolation. On the other hand, participation in one organization and three or more organizations significantly reduced their isolation when compared to non-participants. There was a significant linear trend between the number of types of organizations and isolation, regardless of gender.Participation in social activities reduces future isolation in older people. Encouraging participation in social activities could help reduce negative health outcomes associated with social isolation later in life.

Abstract:Background Loneliness and social isolation are elevated in older adults and associated with a range of detrimental outcomes. Despite this, there has been little research on these phenomena or on similarities and differences in their occurrence or combination in older Japanese adults. The current study aims to (i) determine what factors are associated with social isolation and loneliness among older adults in Japan; and (ii) describe the characteristics of individuals who are socially isolated but not lonely, as well as those who feel lonely but are not socially isolated. Methods Data were analysed from 13 766 adults aged ≥65 years who participated in the 2019 wave of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. Poisson regression analysis was used to examine associations. Results Among older Japanese adults, the attributes of higher age, male gender, lower socioeconomic status, being a welfare recipient, and having depressive symptoms were associated with social isolation, while lower socioeconomic status, unemployment, welfare receipt, and poor physical and mental health were associated with loneliness. In addition, better educated, and mentally and physically healthy people were less likely to feel lonely even when socially isolated, while people who were not working and who had mental or physical health problems were more likely to feel lonely even if they were not socially isolated. Discussion Our results indicate that in order to reduce unwanted social isolation and loneliness among older Japanese adults, in the first instance the focus should be on those individuals who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and unhealthy.

Prospective association between social engagement and cognitive impairment among middle-aged and older adults: evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Objectives: Cognitive impairment is a precursor of dementia. This study aimed to examine the association of social engagement with cognitive decline during the process of normal ageing. Methods: We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The cognitive functions were tested at baseline, and 2-year and 4-year follow-up visits. Social engagement was constructed as a comprehensive measure including the quantity and frequency of social activities. Activities of social engagement were classified into three types. Multilevel logistic model was fitted to evaluate the prospective association between social engagement and cognitive impairment. Results: After 2-year follow-up, compared with participants with the lowest level of social engagement, those with level-2, level-3 and level-4 social engagement had a 12% (OR=0.88, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.09, p=0.242), 17% (OR=0.83, 95% CI 0.71 to 0.97, p=0.020) and 25% (OR=0.75, 95% CI 0.61 to 0.93, p=0.008) lower risk for developing cognitive impairment, respectively. A similar pattern of significantly protective association was found at 4-year follow-up. Combined effect analysis showed that participants who attended one type of social engagement had a lower risk of developing cognitive impairment and the protective effect was even larger with those who attended two or three types of social engagement. Conclusions: Social engagement had a protective effect on cognitive impairment among middle-aged and older adults in China. Given the growing epidemic of dementia and rapid pace of ageing in low-income and middle-income countries, our study shed lights on comprehensive and tailored public health programmes for improving social engagement, to delay cognitive impairment at mid-age and later life.
Association between the level of social participation and depressive symptoms among older Japanese adults: a cross‐sectional survey

Abstract:Background Social participation is recommended for older adults to remain actively involved in daily life. Social participation is a broad concept, ranging from 'interacting with others without doing a specific activity with them' to 'actively contributing to society.' However, previous studies have not taken into account the components of social participation. Depressive symptoms are significant outcomes in older adults. Social participation mitigates these risks owing to its association with reduced mortality and enhanced quality of life. This study aimed to examine the association between the level of social participation and depressive symptoms in community‐dwelling older adults. Methods We included 17 040 individuals aged ≥65 years. Social participation was categorised into Level 3, interacting with others without doing a specific activity with them; Level 4, engaging in an activity with others; Level 5, helping others; and Level 6, contributing to society, based on a previous study by Levasseur et al. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 15‐item Geriatric Depression Scale. Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between the level of social participation and depressive symptoms. Results Overall, 15 069 older adults met the inclusion criteria. A higher level of social participation was associated with lower odds ratios (ORs) for depressive symptoms (Level 6 = OR: 0.43, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37–0.50; Level 5 = OR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.41–0.60; and Level 4 = OR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.52–0.69). Subgroup analyses based on age and sex yielded similar results across all participants. Conclusions Among older adults in Japan, a higher level of social participation was associated with lower rates of depressive symptoms. The relationship between depressive symptoms and the levels of social participation may help develop measures to reduce or prevent depressive symptoms in older adults.

Continuity of Social Interaction and Functional Status: A Nine-year Population-based Prospective Study for the Elderly

Abstract:Since the dimensions of social activity have not been described comprehensively in detail and whether the continuity of activity effectively protects functional status over the long term were not clear, this study was designed to clarify the association between continuity of social interaction and functional status in a group of elderly people with a social interaction measure. The participants were elders (n=363) over 60 years old living in a rural community close to major urban centres in Japan. The content of the questionnaire included a social interaction measure named Index of Social Interaction (ISI) that developed for evaluating social interaction of various types, Lawton-Brody IADL, age, and gender. Subjects consisted of 147 males with a mean age of 68 (SD = 5.7) and 216 females with a mean age of 68 (SD = 5.4). The continuity of social interaction was examined by data analysis. During a nine-year follow up, after controlling for elders' age and gender, the consistent social activities significantly related to their future functional status included: reading newspapers (odds ratio (OR) = 2.93, P < 0.01), reading books or magazines (OR = 1.82, P = 0.02), and having a hobby (OR = 2.46, P < 0.01). The findings indicated that consistent social interactions involving intellectual activities and hobbies were effective in protecting elder's functional status.

Abstract:Journal of Applied Gerontology, Ahead of Print. This study investigated the associations between in-person and remote engagement and self-rated happiness in older adults aged 50 years and above in three cognitive function subgroups: Normal Cognition, Cognitive Impairment not Dementia (CIND), and Dementia. Data were obtained from the 2014 Health and Retirement Study. Results showed that remote engagement was significantly associated with higher self-rated happiness, particularly in the CIND group. However, its association with in-person engagement was less consistent. No significant association was observed among individuals with dementia. However, the direction of the relationship between the two types of social engagement and self-rated happiness was positive. Instrumental activities of daily living, depression, and social capital were identified as potential factors influencing the relationship between social engagement and self-rated happiness. These findings emphasize promotion of both in-person and remote social engagement opportunities to enhance the well-being of older adults across different cognitive function subgroups.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Volunteering has been widely recognized as beneficial to the well-being of older adults, providing health benefits, increased social engagement, and a sense of purpose. This study aimed to explore the associations between volunteering and physical and mental health measures among older adults in Japan. Methods: Using an online survey conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, 500 participants aged 65 and older were divided into volunteer and non-volunteer groups. Demographic, lifestyle, and health characteristics were comprehensively assessed using a series of reliable and validated instruments. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the associations between volunteering and health outcomes. Results: The findings revealed that while there were no significant differences in physical health indicators and undertreatment of most diseases (with the exception of cataracts), volunteers reported significantly lower levels of depression and loneliness compared to non-volunteers. The volunteer group also showed greater engagement in social activities and hobbies, which may have contributed to their improved mental health outcomes. Conclusions: The results of this study add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that volunteering may be an effective, low-cost intervention for promoting mental health and social engagement among older adults.

Abstract:In recent years, arts engagement has been proposed as a non-pharmacological approach to reduce cognitive decline and increase well-being and quality of life in specific populations such as the elderly or patients with severe disease. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effects of receptive or active arts engagement on reducing cognitive decline and improving quality of life and well-being in healthy populations, with a particular focus on the role of arts engagement in the long term. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted across four databases from February to March 2023. Ten studies with a total of 7,874 participants were incorporated in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Active and receptive arts engagement was found to be an effective approach to reduce cognitive decline and improve well-being and quality of life in healthy populations. The role of the positive effects of arts engagement could be determined by the combination of several factors such as exposure to cultural activities and the group effect. There is limited evidence of the protective effects of active arts engagement over a long period of time. Given the increasing demand for preventive programmes to reduce the negative effects of population ageing, more research on arts engagement should be conducted to identify its mechanisms and long-term effects.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: This campaign sought to (a) increase awareness of sexual health and chlamydia testing; (b) motivate students, particularly sexually active men who do not pursue regular sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, to get tested; and (c) improve the capacity of the student health center to provide free chlamydia testing and treatment for all students. Participants: Students enrolled at a 4-year public research university (N = 333). Methods: Collaborative partnerships formed the foundation of a campus marketing and testing campaign, with treatment for students testing positive for chlamydia. Results: A total of 333 students were tested over 5 consecutive Mondays, showing a chlamydia incidence of 9.6%. The incidence for females and males were 8.6% and 10.8%, respectively. Conclusions: The campaign was effective in reaching men, an at-risk population not traditionally emphasized in STI testing.

Abstract:We examined the association of age-friendly communities with health and well-being among older adults in Japan. Ecological and multilevel analyses of 71,824 older adults across 145 communities revealed that the community's age-friendliness consistently showed associations with health and well-being. Age-friendly physical environments (accessibility to barrier-free outdoor spaces, buildings, and transportation resources) exhibited an inverse association with functional health deficits. Social engagement and communication (participation in community groups, volunteer engagement, and information use) were inversely associated with depressive symptoms. Social inclusion and dementia-friendliness (respect and inclusion for older adults and positive attitudes toward people with dementia) were positively associated with happiness. The community's age-friendliness reflected well the multiple aspects of older adults' health and well-being.

Abstract:Introduction: Asian countries are experiencing a rapid rise in their aging populations. Cognitive and physical decline associated with aging can limit social interaction. This particularly impacts on those residing in long-term care facilities and engagement with children and young people. Intergenerational engagement has known benefits on the health and wellbeing of older people, it is unclear what the impact of intergeneration engagement interventions might have on older people in Asian long-term care settings. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness and experiences of intergenerational engagement with older people in long-term care facilities in Asia. Methods: Ten databases were searched to locate empirical studies of any design published in English or Chinese from January 2000 to June 2023. The search was limited to papers reporting effectiveness and/or experiences of intergenerational engagement on older people residing in Asian long-term care settings. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023413935) and followed PRISMA guidelines for reporting. A convergent design employing narrative synthesis was used to synthesize and integrate findings. Results: From initial searches, 1,092 records were identified, of which 13 studies were retained for the review: 7 quantitative (including 1 randomized controlled trial, 1 cross-sectional observational design, and 5 quasi-experimental designs), 3 qualitative, and 3 mixed methods. Included studies were of variable quality. Quantitative evidence revealed that intergenerational engagement reduced depression (4.47 vs. 8.67, p = 0.005), negative emotions (14.11 vs. 16.56, p = 0.030), and feelings of loneliness (p < 0.01) among older people; and increased quality of life (mean change = -1.91; 95% CI = -3.18, -0.64) and strengthens interpersonal interactions (p = 0.025). Qualitative insights suggested that intergenerational engagement could foster emotional bonds, enhance intergenerational relationships, promote lifelong learning, satisfy social needs and improve older peoples' overall quality of life. However, some challenges such as language differences and noise levels can hinder successful implementation of intergenerational engagement. Conclusion: This review indicates that intergenerational engagement can reduce depression and loneliness, improve quality of life, and strengthen social bonds for older individuals in Asian long-term care facilities. Despite some challenges, the evidence underlines its potential to meet the emotional and social needs of older people. Recognizing and addressing delivery challenges is essential for effective implementation. Abstract:This study investigated the effects of leisure and social activities on the ability of middle-aged adults to maintain activities of daily living (ADL), and whether performing these activities alone or with others contributed to the ability to perform ADL. The study used nationally representative longitudinal data of 22,770 adults in Japan, aged 50-59 years, who did not have limitations in performing ADL at the beginning of the 5-year survey period. The study considered six activity categories: two leisure activities ("hobbies or cultural activities" and "exercise or sports") and four social activities ("community events," "support for children," "support for elderly individuals," and "other social activities"). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relation between participation in these categories at baseline and difficulties in ADL at the 5-year follow-up. The association between the extent of social interaction during these activities ("by oneself," "with others," or "both") and difficulties in ADL was also investigated. The analysis yielded significant negative correlations between "exercise or sports" and difficulties in ADL for both men and women, and between "hobbies or cultural activities" and difficulties in ADL for women. However, these significant relationships occurred only when activities were conducted "with others." The present findings might help prevent deterioration in middle-aged adults' performance of ADL in Japan.
