Abstract:Grasshoppers mainly threaten natural grassland vegetation and crops. Therefore, it is of great significance to understand the relationship between environmental factors and grasshopper occurrence. This paper studies the spatial distribution and key factors of grasshopper occurrence in two grass types by integrating a machine learning model (Maxent) and remote sensing data within the major grasshopper occurrence areas of Inner Mongolia, China. The modelling results demonstrate that the typical steppe has larger suitable area and more proportion for grasshopper living than meadow steppe. The soil type, above biomass, altitude and temperature mainly determine the grasshopper occurrence in typical steppe and meadow steppe. However, the contribution of these factors in the two grass types is significantly different. In addition, related vegetation and meteorological factors affect the different growing stages of grasshoppers between the two grass types. This study clearly defines the different effects of key environmental factors (meteorology, vegetation, soil and topography) for grasshopper occurrence in typical steppe and meadow steppe. It also provides a methodology to guide early warning and precautions for grasshopper pest prevention. The findings of this study will be helpful for future management measures, to ensure grass ecological environment security and the sustainable development of grassland.

Abstract:Grasshoppers are highly destructive pests, and their outbreak can directly damage livestock development. Grasshopper outbreaks can be monitored and forecasted through dynamic analysis of their potential geographic distribution and main influencing factors. By integrating vegetation, edaphic, meteorological, topography, and other geospatial data, this study simulated the grasshopper suitability index in Hulunbuir grassland using maximum entropy species distribution modeling (Maxent). The Maxent model showed high accuracy, with the training area under the curve (AUC) value ranging from 0.897 to 0.973 and the testing AUC ranging from 0.853 to 0.971 for the past 13 years. The results showed that suitable areas, including the most suitable area and moderately suitable area, accounted for a small proportion and were mainly located in the eastern and southern parts of the study area. According to model analysis based on 51 environmental factors, not all factors played a significant role in the grasshopper cycle. Moreover, differences in environmental factors drive the spatial variability of suitable areas for grasshoppers. The monitoring and prediction of potential outbreak areas can be improved by identifying major environmental factors having large variability between suitable and unsuitable areas. Future trends in grasshopper suitability indices are likely to contradict past trends in most of the study area, with only approximately 33% of the study area continuing the past trend. The results are expected to guide future monitoring and prediction of grasshoppers in Hulunbuir grassland.

Abstract:Grasshoppers are important elements for supporting ecosystem services which make it important to understand their spatial distribution characteristics to reduce outbreaks, implement effective control while minimizing non-target impacts. The spatial software package Geographical Detector (GD) was used to rank the interaction and effects of 19 environmental factors on the distribution of grasshopper species were quantified in four types of steppes in Northwestern, China. Results showed that the distribution of the insect was mainly influenced by elevation ( q = 0.44). Among the factor interactions, elevation ∩ average annual precipitation ( q = 0.795) was the strongest, followed by elevation ∩ soil available nitrogen ( q = 0.722). Temperate meadow steppe and temperate steppe were identified as the areas at greatest risk for grasshopper's occurrence. This research shows that the Geographical Detector could be provided a useful tool to identify the driving forces for grasshopper distribution. Our research also offers a new method to more broadly understand the interactions between different drivers to explain the distribution of other insects.

Abstract:[Aim] The objective of this research is to analyze and predict the potential geographical distributions of two important mirid predators Tytthus chinensis and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis,of rice planthoppers,and to study the effects of climatic factors on their potential geographical distribution.[Methods] Maximum entropy niche-based modeling (MaxEnt) was used to predict species geographical distributions based on maximum entropy.The distribution records of the two mirid species and a set of environmental predictor variables were used to model the suitable geographical distributions of the two species.[Results] The results showed that the principal geographical distribution areas of T.chinensis were Southeast China,East Asia,Southeast Asia and parts of the Indonesia or within the geographical biomes of the Oriental and Australia.The suitable distribution areas of C.lividipennis were relatively broader in comparison with those of T.chinensis.In addition to the distribution area of T.chinensis,C.lividipennis could possibly survive in Shandong,Hebei,Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces in China,and the Amazon region as well.The suitability of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis was found to be affected significantly by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal range.Especially,the precipitation in the warmest season exceeding 500 mm and the mean diurnal range monthly below 10℃ are the more favorable conditions for the distribution of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis.[Conclusion] Our results revealed that the suitable distribution of these two predators is primarily affected by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal temperature range monthly.This study provides some important evidence for successful biological control of the two mirids in these potential distribution regions.

Abstract:An increase in grassland rodent pests in China has seriously affected grassland ecological environments and the development of husbandry. Here, we used remote sensing data and a species–environmental matching model to predict the potential spatial distribution of the five major rodent pest species (Microtus, Citellus, Myospalax, Meriones, Ochotona) in northern China, and examined how the predicted suitability of the area depends on environmental variables. The results were consistent and significant, better than random, and close to optimal. Meriones and Microtus had the largest areas of High Suitability and Moderate Suitability with regard to environmental conditions. The combination analysis of areas of Moderate Suitability and High Suitability showed that for 66% of the total area, conditions were suitable for just one rodent species, while conditions suitable for two and three kinds of rodents accounted for 31% and 3%, respectively. Altitude, land surface temperature in winter (November, December, February) and summer (May, June, July), vegetation cover in summer (July, August), and precipitation from spring to summer (April, May, June) determined the spatial distribution of grassland rodents. Our findings provide a powerful and useful methodological tool for tracking the five major rodent pest species in northern China and for future management measures to ensure grassland ecological environment security.

Abstract:Grasshoppers have been a chronic problem for agriculture on the Canadian prairies, the northern limits of the Northern Great Plains, since settlement of the region in the mid-1800s. Grasshopper pest management tools include biological control, cultural control, and insecticides. This article describes a mechanistic, or process-based, modeling approach used to assess the development and abundance of the migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fabricius), based on a complex of environmental drivers. The purpose of the study was to develop and validate a model (using extensive field data) to quantify the effects of interannual weather variation on M. sanguinipes development and abundance in Saskatchewan, Canada. Overall, the accuracy of model predictions improved for later instars and adults such that predictions regarding adult populations were highly similar to field-collected data. The model provides greater understanding of how M. sanguinipes oviposition is related not only to adult densities, but also to the first appearance of adults and to weather conditions during the oviposition period. The model output can be used to provide accurate within-season updates of the status of grasshopper populations in western Canada to optimize pest management.

Abstract:Abstract Almost all of the methods traditionally selected to estimate forage damage caused by grasshoppers in grassland are to determine the forage damage in relation to forage yield in fall. But the damage to standing forage, not the forage yields in fall, should be considered in determining forage damage and economic thresholds in grazing pasture. A new method that combines the field hang‐cage rearing with natural grasshopper population dynamics to evaluate the damage to standing forage was presented in this paper. The complex grasshoppers economic threshold models in grazing pasture can be described as: a0+ a 1 M 1 + a 2 M 2+a3S1+a4S2= CWhere M1: biomass of Myrmeleotettix palpalis (Zub.); M2: biomass of Chorthippus dubius (Zub); S1: average individual weight of My. palpalis; S2: average individual weight of Ch. dubius, a0‐a4: constants. Abstract:Extensive grassland degradation under climate change and intensified human activities has threatened ecological security and caused a variety of environmental problems. However, it is still challenging to predict the grassland degradation status on a large scale because it is a multi-factorial phenomenon with complex changes in ecosystem structure and function, which is hard to be fully characterized through mechanism models. The emergence of machine learning algorithms provides a potential to model complex systems and mine information from multi-source data without elucidating underlying mechanisms. Here, we utilized random forest and neural network algorithms to predict the grassland degradation represented by the net primary productivity (NPP) changing rate based on multi-source data including geographic, meteorological, plant traits, land use type and microbial variables in the Chinese Northern grassland. Particularly, the microbial roles in determining the degradation status were concerned. Results show that a high prediction precision was achieved by random forest model, rather than by neural network model, with a mean relative error of 16.9% and a mean square error of 9.273e-05. Besides identified longitude, arid index and current NPP state, specific soil microbial groups, mainly Solirubrobacter, were screened as credible biomarkers. Regarding model fitting, geographic, meteorological and plant variables explained 61.8% of the total variance, which was enhanced up to 72.8% by the rest microbial markers. These findings provide a theoretical basis to establish a pre-warning system for grassland management and policy-making.

Abstract:Insects of the family Orthoptera: Acrididae including grasshoppers and locust devastate crops and eco-systems around the globe. The effective control of these insects requires large numbers of trained extension agents who try to spot concentrations of the insects on the ground so that they can be destroyed before they take flight. This is a challenging and difficult task. No automatic detection system is yet available to increase scouting productivity, data scale and fidelity. Here we demonstrate MAESTRO, a novel grasshopper detection framework that deploys deep learning within RBG images to detect insects. MAESTRO uses a state-of-the-art two-stage training deep learning approach. The framework can be deployed not only on desktop computers but also on edge devices without internet connection such as smartphones. MAESTRO can gather data using cloud storge for further research and in-depth analysis. In addition, we provide a challenging new open dataset (GHCID) of highly variable grasshopper populations imaged in Inner Mongolia. The detection performance of the stationary method and the mobile App are 78 and 49 percent respectively; the stationary method requires around 1000 ms to analyze a single image, whereas the mobile app uses only around 400 ms per image. The algorithms are purely data-driven and can be used for other detection tasks in agriculture (e.g. plant disease detection) and beyond. This system can play a crucial role in the collection and analysis of data to enable more effective control of this critical global pest.
An Analysis of the Possible Migration Routes of Oedaleus decorus asiaticus Bey-Bienko (Orthoptera: Acrididae) from Mongolia to China

Abstract:Oedaleus decorus asiaticus (Bey-Bienko) is a destructive pest in grasslands and adjacent farmland in northern China, Mongolia, and other countries in Asia. It has been supposed that this insect pest can migrate a long distance and then induce huge damages, however, the migration mechanism is still unrevealed. The current study uses insect light trap data from Yanqing (Beijing), together with regional meteorological data to determine how air flow contributes to the long-distance migration of O. decorus asiaticus. Our results indicate that sinking airflow is the main factor leading to the insects' forced landing, and the prevailing northwest wind was associated with O. decorus asiaticus taking off in the northwest and moving southward with the airflow from July to September. Meanwhile, the insects have a strong migratory ability, flying along the airflow for several nights. Thus, when the airflow from the northwest met the northward-moving warm current from the southwest, a large number of insects were dropped due to sinking airflow, resulting in a large outbreak. Our simulations suggest that the source of the grasshoppers involved in these outbreaks during early 2000s in northern China probably is in Mongolia, and all evidence indicates that there are two important immigrant routes for O. decorus asiaticus migration from Mongolia to Beijing. These findings improves our understanding of the factors guiding O. decorus asiaticus migration, providing valuable information to reduce outbreaks in China that have origins from outside the country.
Remote Sensing Monitoring of Grassland Locust Density Based on Machine Learning

Abstract:The main aim of this study was to utilize remote sensing data to establish regression models through machine learning to predict locust density in the upcoming year. First, a dataset for monitoring grassland locust density was constructed based on meteorological data and multi-source remote sensing data in the study area. Subsequently, an SVR (support vector regression) model, BP neural network regression model, random forest regression model, BP neural network regression model with the PCA (principal component analysis), and deep belief network regression model were built on the dataset. The experimental results show that the random forest regression model had the best prediction performance among the five models. Specifically, the model achieved a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9685 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.0144 on the test set, which were the optimal values achieved among all the models tested. Finally, the locust density in the study area for 2023 was predicted and, by comparing the predicted results with actual measured data, it was found that the prediction accuracy was high. This is of great significance for local grassland ecological management, disaster warning, scientific decision-making support, scientific research progress, and sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract:Fires greatly threaten the grassland ecosystem, human life, and economic development. However, since limited research focuses on grassland fire prediction, it is necessary to find a better method to predict the probability of grassland-fire occurrence. Multiple environmental variables impact fire occurrence. After selecting natural variables based on remote sensing data and anthropogenic variables, we built regression models of grassland fire probability, taking into account historical fire points and variables in Inner Mongolia. We arrived at three methods to identify grassland fire drivers and predict fire probability: global logistic regression, geographically weighted logistic regression, and random forest. According to the results, the random forest model had the best predictive effect. Nine variables selected by a geographically weighted logistic regression model exercised a spatially unbalanced influence on grassland fires. The three models all showed that meteorological factors and a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were of great importance to grassland fire occurrence. In Inner Mongolia, grassland fires occurring in different areas indicated varying responses to the influencing drivers, and areas that differed in their natural and geographical conditions had different fire-prevention periods. Thus, a grassland fire management strategy based on local conditions should be advocated, and existing fire-monitoring systems based on original meteorological factors should be improved by adding remote sensing data of grassland fuels to increase accuracy.

Predicting the Impact of Climate Change on the Geographical Distribution of Leafhopper, Cicadella viridis in China through the MaxEnt Model

Abstract:Cicadella viridis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) is an omnivorous leafhopper that feeds on plant sap. It significantly reduces the yield of agricultural and forestry crops while feeding or ovipositing on the host plant. In recent years, the rapid expansion of C. viridis has posed a serious threat to agricultural and forestry crops. To study the impact of climate change on the geographical distribution of the leafhopper, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model and ArcGIS software, combined with 253 geographic distribution records of the pest and 24 environmental variables, were used, for the first time, to predict the potential distribution of C. viridis in China under conditions of climatic change. The results showed that the currently suitable areas for C. viridis are 29.06–43° N, 65.25–85.15° E, and 93.45–128.85° E, with an estimated area of 11,231,423.79 km2, i.e., 11.66% of China. The Loess Plateau, the North China Plain, and the Shandong Peninsula are the main suitable areas. The potential distribution of the leafhopper for the high and medium suitability areas decreased under each climate scenario (except RCP8.5 in the 2090s). Several key variables that have the most significant effect on the distribution of C. viridis were identified, including the mean annual temperature (Bio1), the standard deviation of temperature seasonality (Bio4), the minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio6), and the precipitation of the coldest quarter (Bio19). Our research provides important guidance for developing effective monitoring and pest control methods for C. viridis, given the predicted challenges of altered pest dynamics related to future climate change.

Abstract:Abstract Since the mid-19th century, grasshoppers have posed a substantial threat to North American rangelands as well as adjacent croplands and have the potential to cost the economy millions of dollars in annual damages. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have gone to great lengths to ensure that rangeland grasshopper populations remain below an economic impact threshold across the western United States. However, current grasshopper forecasting efforts by the USDA are based solely on the previous year’s grasshopper density and do not take region-specific environmental factors (e.g., climate and topography) into account. To better understand the effects of climate and landscape heterogeneity on rangeland grasshopper populations, we assessed the relationship between grasshopper density survey data from across 56 sites between 2007 and 2017 for four counties in north central Wyoming with 72 biologically relevant geographic information system (GIS)-based environmental variables. A regression model was developed to predict mean adult grasshopper density from 2012 to 2016, which was then used to forecast grasshopper density in 2017. The best-fit predictive model selected using Akaike’s Information Criterion (AICc) explained 34.5% of the variation in mean grasshopper density from 2012 to 2016. October precipitation and past mean grasshopper density from 2007 to 2011 were among the best predictors of mean grasshopper density in 2012–2016. Our results also suggest that rangelands in central Sheridan County, southwest Johnson County, and southeast Washakie County are more prone to grasshopper outbreaks. Most importantly, this study demonstrated that both biotic and abiotic environmental variables influence grasshopper density and should be considered in future forecasting efforts.

Remote Sensing Of Locust And Grasshopper Plague In China: A Review

Abstract:Locust and grasshopper plague has caused problems for man since the beginning of recorded history. In China 1.47 million ha of farmlands in 160 counties of 14 provinces suffered from oriental migratory locust L. m. manilensis attacks in summer of 2002. Among the 800 kinds of known grasshopper species habituating in China, there are 60 kinds of them are throwing a big threat to ecological environment and sustainable development of grassland and husbandry. To prevent agricultural and economical losses, locust and grasshopper habitats and vegetation damage should be monitored and assessed for assisting pest managers with precaution and practical acts in various damage stages. Given the vast geographic extent of the study area and demand of high temporal frequency of data, traditional ground survey methods are inadequate for locust management in our modern era. With advantage of detecting remotely area in large scale dynamically and uninterruptedly, remote sensing (RS) integrated with other information technologies (e.g. GIS (Geographical Information System)) can be applied in locust monitoring. According to biology of locust and grasshopper, there are several certain ecological indicators (e.g. soil, vegetation, geographical condition, temperature) are required for locust and grasshopper growth during their different life stages. With increasing availability of spatio-temporal resolution and continues coverage, remote sensing can be applied in ecological change monitoring for locust management. Various satellite images are increasingly used in locust risk assessment, plague monitoring and damage assessment with analysis and retrieval of several essential ecological factors (e.g. soil moisture, land surface temperature, vegetation condition) and mapping high risk locust habitats and greenness distribution. Locust and grasshopper plague can be monitored through detecting vegetation with LAI (Leaf Area Index) and suitability of habitats. Assessing damage of vegetation and crops can be conducted through satellite images for VI extraction and LAI retrieval. This paper provides a review of past and recent study in RS and GIS related to risk assessment, plague monitoring and damage assessment for summarizing progress on remote sensing of locust and grasshopper plague in China. The potential and availability of satellite data with certain spatiotemporal resolution in retrieval of ecological factor are explored with study focus on relationship between locust growth and environmental variation especially oriental migratory locust L. m. manilensis. Integration of multi-sensor, multi-source, multi-spatiotemporal observation system should be established in future locust management which can optimize resources available.
Mapping Benggang Erosion Susceptibility: An Analysis of Environmental Influencing Factors Based on the Maxent Model

Abstract:Benggang erosion is one of the most severe geomorphological hazards occurring on deeply weathered crusts in the hilly regions of southern China. Unraveling the susceptibility and pinpointing the risk areas of Benggang erosion are essential for developing effective prevention and management strategies. This study introduced the Maxent model to investigate Benggang erosion susceptibility (BES) and compared the evaluation results with the widely used Random Forest (RF) model. The findings are as follows: (1) the incidence of Benggang erosion is rising initially with an increase in elevation, slope, topographic wetness index, rainfall erosivity, and fractional vegetation cover, followed by a subsequent decline, highlighting its distinct characteristics compared to typical types of gully erosion; (2) the AUC values from the ROC curves for the Maxent and RF models are 0.885 and 0.927, respectively. Both models converge on elevation, fractional vegetation cover, rainfall erosivity, Lithology, and topographic wetness index as the most impactful variables; (3) both models adeptly identified regions prone to potential Benggang erosion. However, the Maxent model demonstrated superior spatial correlation in its susceptibility assessment, contrasting with the RF model, which tended to overestimate the BES in certain regions; (4) the Maxent model's advantages include no need for absence samples, direct handling of categorical data, and more convincing results, suggesting its potential for widespread application in the BES assessment. This research contributes empirical evidence to study the Benggang erosion developing conditions in the hilly regions of southern China and provides an important consideration for the sustainability of the regional ecological environment and human society.

Abstract:Aboveground biomass (AGB) is a key index that reflects grassland health and is of great importance for grassland conservation and sustainable utilization. Many previous studies on grassland AGB were based on the analysis of the whole study period, can't reflect the change of grassland in the short term, which was not conducive to the implementation and revision of policies. And it is still a challenge to accurately describe the response of grassland AGB to climate factors. In this study, we used four machine learning algorithms (kNN, k-nearest neighbor; RF, Random Forest; SVR, Support Vactor Regression; and XGBoost, eXtreme Gradient Boosting) to construct the estimation model of grassland AGB in eastern Inner Mongolia based on grassland AGB measurement data, MODIS(MOD13Q1) data and environmental data (climate and topography). The average distribution of grassland AGB from 2003 to 2021 was calculated based on the optimal grassland AGB estimation model. The changes of grassland AGB from 2003 to 2021 and in every five-year period during the study series were comprehensively analyzed by the Theil–Sen Median trend analysis and the Mann–Kendall test. The response of grassland AGB to climatic factors was investigated using sensitivity analysis. The results showed that (1) the XGBoost model constructed by NDVI, longitude, latitude, temperature, precipitation, elevation, slope, and aspect (NXYTPESA) is the optimal grassland AGB model (R 2 = 0.87, RMSE = 14.27 g/m 2 ). (2) The 20-year average grassland AGB in Eastern Inner Mongolia showed heterogeneous, with higher values in the northeast and lower values in the southwest. (3) The inter-annual variation fluctuated substantially, and the overall trend was increasing. Compared with other time periods, most grassland AGBs were in an increasing trend during 2008–2012 (79 %) and 2018–2021 (84 %). (4) The grassland AGB in the study area was regulated by temperature and precipitation, and the influence of precipitation was greater than that of temperature. This study provides a new method for estimating grassland AGB and its changes and a scientific basis for the sustainable development of grassland ecosystems in eastern Inner Mongolia.

Abstract:Grassland degradation is serious in the Mongolian plateau, especially in Inner Mongolia, China. Accurate monitoring of grassland types and qualities is increasingly important for the purposes of grassland conservation and restoration. Using in situ hyperspectral reflectance data and ground-based ecological measurements, we explored the potential for large-scale monitoring grassland communities using imaging spectroradiometers. We compared the spectral reflectance of the major types of grasslands and field plots with/without livestock grazing. We also did statistical analysis about the relationship between hyperspectral indices and aboveground biomass (AGB) of the surveyed grassland communities. The results showed that: (1) the dominant plant species varied across meadow, typical, and desert steppe, and they also varied between fenced and grazed plots; (2) in situ hyperspectral data are useful for differentiating grassland communities of meadow, typical, and desert steppe and grassland communities with and without livestock grazing; and (3) the prediction accuracies of vegetation indices for AGB decreased from desert to typical and meadow steppe, and the results were contrary for the prediction accuracies of red edge inflection point (REIP). REIP may not be suitable for estimating AGB of the low-density grassland communities. The above results implied that care must be taken while using statistical models to link spectral and ecological measurements in large geographical scales since there is lack of portability over different types of grassland communities. This study provides foundations for future large-scale efforts of monitoring grassland communities in Inner Mongolia using imaging spectroradiometers.
