Abstract:Recent experiments and theoretical studies strongly indicate that water exhibits a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) in the supercooled domain. An open question is how the LLPT of water can affect the properties of aqueous solutions. Here, we study the structural and thermodynamic properties of supercooled glycerol-water microdroplets at dilute conditions ($\chi_g=3.2~\%$ glycerol mole fraction). The combination of rapid evaporative cooling with ultrafast X-ray scattering allows us to outrun crystallization and gain access to the deeply supercooled regime down to $T=229.3$ K. We find that the density fluctuations of the glycerol-water solution or, equivalently, its isothermal compressibility, $\kappa_T$, increases upon cooling. This is confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, which indicate that the presence of glycerol shifts the temperature of maximum $\kappa_T$ from $T=230$ K in pure water down to $T=223$ K in the solution. Our findings elucidate the interplay between the complex behavior of water, including its LLPT, and the properties of aqueous solutions at low temperatures, which can have practical consequences in cryogenic biological applications and cryopreservation techniques.

Density Dependence Of Hydrogen Bonding And The Translational-Orientational Structural Order In Supercritical Water: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation have been performed with a wide range of densities along a near critical isotherm of supercritical water (SCW) in order to study the density dependence of the structure order and hydrogen bonding (HB). It is revealed that the translational structure order is nearly invariant while the orientational tetrahedral structure order is very sensitive to the bulk density under supercritical conditions. Meanwhile, some energetically unfavorable intermediate water dimer structures are found to appear under supercritical conditions due to the reduced energy difference and the enhanced energy fluctuation. As a consequence, a general geometrical criterion or the inclusion of a energy-based criterion instead of currently widely adopted pure r(OH)-based geometric criterion is suggested to be used in the HB statistics under supercritical conditions. It is found that the average HB number per H2O molecule (n(HB)) reduces with the decreasing SCW bulk density although a given pair of H2O molecules are shown to have a stronger ability to form a hydrogen bond under lower SCW bulk densities. Accordingly, the orientational tetrahedral structure order q decreases with the reducing bulk density under supercritical conditions. However, when the fluid is dilute with rho <= 0.19 rho(c) (rho(c) = 0.322 g/cm(3)), the energy fluctuation increases sharply and the short-range order is destroyed, signifying the supercritical fluid (SCF)-gas state transition. Accordingly, the orientational tetrahedral structure order q gets reversal around rho = 0.19 rho(c) and approaches zero under very dilute conditions. The sensitivity of the orientational order to the density implies the microscopic origin of the significant dependence of SCF's physicochemical properties on the pressure. On the Different Faces of the Supercritical Phase of Water at a Near-Critical Temperature: Pressure-Induced Structural Transitions Ranging from a Gaslike Fluid to a Plastic Crystal Polymorph

Abstract:The present study reports a systematic analysis of a wide variety of structural, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties of supercritical water along the near-critical isotherm of T = 1.03Tc and up to extreme pressures, using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. The methodology employed provides solid evidence about the existence of a structural transition from a liquidlike fluid to a compressed, tightly packed liquid, in the density and pressure region around 3.4ρc and 1.17 GPa, introducing an alternative approach to locate the crossing of the Frenkel line. Around 8.5 GPa another transition to a face-centered-cubic plastic crystal polymorph with density 5.178ρc is also observed, further confirmed by Gibbs free energy calculations using the two-phase thermodynamic model. The isobaric heat capacity maximum, closely related to the crossing of the Widom line, has also been observed around 0.8ρc, where the local density augmentation is also maximized. Another structural transition has been observed at 0.2ρc, related to the transformation of the fluid to a dilute gas at lower densities. These findings indicate that a near-critical isotherm can be divided into different domains where supercritical water exhibits distinct behavior, ranging from a gaslike one to a plastic crystal one.

Abstract:PURPOSE Previously identified U.S. drug information centers (DICs) were surveyed to determine whether they were still in existence and whether changes had occurred in the DICs since 2003. METHODS Eighty-nine DICs identified in a 2003 survey were surveyed in April 2008. For DICs still in existence, questions were designed to determine whether there were changes in the mission, time spent on activities, staffing, and drug information questions (number, complexity, and time required to answer) compared with five years earlier. Respondents' projected need for their DIC over the next five years was also surveyed. RESULTS Seventy-five (84%) of the 89 DICs were still active. The most notable changes in activities were increases in time spent on educating health-professions students (53%), supporting the institution's medication safety program (44%), and providing information-systems support (36%). The majority of respondents (73%) reported no change in the number of employed drug information personnel. The percentages of DICs reporting an increase, decrease, and no change in the number of drug information requests received were 29%, 42%, and 29%, respectively. Seventy percent reported an increase in the number of complex questions, while 53% reported an increase in the time required to answer each question. Ninety-seven percent of respondents projected no change or an increase in the need for their DIC over the next five years. CONCLUSION Eighty-four percent of the previously identified DICs were still in existence. The most notable changes in these DICs were increases in the number of DICs focusing on educating health-professions students, the complexity of drug information questions, and the amount of time required to answer each request.

Abstract:The binary supercritical mixture methane–carbon dioxide (SC CH4–CO2) with mole fraction of methane X=0.2 was investigated at temperature T=323.15 K and density ρ=0.23814 g/cm3 corresponding to a pressure 9.94 MPa, by using the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation technique in the canonical (NVT) ensemble. The local intermolecular structure of the fluid was investigated in terms of the appropriate pair radial distribution functions, which have been calculated and analyzed. The estimated average local coordination numbers and mole fractions around the species in the mixture have been used to explore the repulsive or attractive nature of the fluid. The results obtained have led to the conclusion that the SC CH4–CO2 mixture at these conditions might be characterized as a repulsive one. This result supports the conclusions of a previously reported experimental work by Baglin et al. [F.G. Baglin, S.K. Murray, J.E. Daugherty, T.E. Palmer, W. Stanbery, Mol. Phys. 98 (2000) 409.]. The single reorientational dynamics of both the solute and solvent species in the mixture were also investigated by calculating the appropriate time correlation functions. The observed time dependence of these functions are discussed in relation with the local environment around the species, which in the case of the solute molecules seems to be strongly affected.

Abstract:Supercritical water (scW) is important for various engineering applications. The structure and distribution of scW is key to dominate the related processes and phenomena. Here, scW is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with controlled pressure and temperature. Density oscillation is observed to occur in a 1 nm thickness bin, indicating mass exchange of particles across the bin interface. We show that the low density scW behaves strong heterogeneity. Quantitative analysis of system density fluctuations is performed by square root error and maximum structure factor, demonstrating the agreement between the two methods. The scW molecules are tightly gathered to form "liquid island" locally, but are very sparse in other regions, which are similar to the gas-liquid mixture in subcritical pressure. A target molecule is tracked to plot 3D displacements and rotating angles, with the former indicating large amplitude ballistic (diffusing) motion and small amplitude oscillation, and the latter displaying two scales of angle jumping. Both translation and rotating motion are related to hydrogen bond break up and reorganization. The low density scW behaves isolated molecules with few combinations of hydrogen bonds between molecules, while the high density scW behaves more combinations of molecules via hydrogen bonds. The two scales motion is expected to influence thermal/chemical process in supercritical state, deepening the fundamental understanding of scW structure.

Abstract:Aqueous n-octanol (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) mixtures from the octanol rich side are studied by x-ray scattering and computer simulation, with focus on structural changes, particularly in what concerns the hydration of the hydroxyl-group aggregated chain-like structures, under the inuence of various branching of the alkyl tails. Previous studies have indicated that hydroxyl-group chain-cluster formation is hindered in proportion to the branching number. Here, water mole-fractions up to x = 0.2 are exam- ined, i.e. up to the miscibility limit. It is found that water molecules within the hydroxyl-chain domains, participate to the chain formations in dierent manner for the 1-octanol and the branched octanols. The hy- dration of the octanol hydroxyl chains is conrmed by the shifting of the scattering pre-peak to low momentum transfer both from measured and simulated x-ray scattering intensities, which corresponds to an increased size of the clusters. Experimental x-ray scattering amplitudes are seen to increase with increasing water content for 1-octanol, while this trend is reversed in all branched octanols, with the amplitudes decreasing with the increase of branching number. Conjecturing that the amplitudes of pre- peaks are related to the density of corresponding aggregates, these results are interpreted as water breaking large OH hydroxyl chains in 1-octanol, hence increasing the density of aggregates, while enhancing hydroxyl ag- gregates in branched alcohols by inserting itself into the OH chains. Hence, water acts as a structure maker or breaker in inverse proportion to the hindering of OH hydroxyl chain structures arising from the topology of the alkyl tails (branched or not).

Abstract:We investigate the solvent density driven changes in polymer conformation and phase behavior that occur in a supercritical fluid, with a particular emphasis on conditions near the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase boundary. Using continuous space Monte Carlo simulations, the mean square end-to-end distance (R) and radius of gyration (Rg) are calculated for a single chain with 20 Lennard-Jones segments in a monomeric solvent over a broad range of densities and temperatures. The chains collapse as temperature increases at constant pressure, or as density decreases at constant temperature. A minimum in R and Rg occurs at a temperature slightly above the coil-to-globule transition temperature (C-GTT), where the chain adopts a quasi-ideal conformation, defined by the balance of binary attractive and repulsive interactions. Expanded ensemble simulations of finite-concentration polymer–solvent mixtures reveal that the LCST phase boundary correlates well with the single chain C-GTT. At temperatures well above the LCST, the chain expands again suggesting an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase boundary above the LCST.

Abstract:The phase behavior of hydrocarbon fluids confined in porous media has been reported to deviate significantly from that in the bulk environment due to the existence of sub-10 nm pores. Though experiments and simulations have measured the bubble/dew points and sorption isotherms of hydrocarbons confined in both natural and synthetic nanopores, the confinement effects in terms of the strength of fluid–pore interactions tuned by surface wettability and chemistry have received comparably less discussion. More importantly, the underlying physics of confinement-induced phenomena remain obfuscated. In this work, we studied the phase behavior and capillary condensation of <i>n</i>-hexane to understand the effects of confinement at the molecular level. To systematically investigate the pore effects, we constructed two types of wall confinements; one is a structureless virtual wall described by the Steele potential and the other one is an all-atom amorphous silica structure with surface modified by hydroxyl groups. Our numerical results demonstrated the importance of fluid–pore interaction, pore size, and pore morphology effects in mediating the pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) properties of hydrocarbons. The most remarkable finding of this work was that the saturation pressure predicted from the van der Waals-type adsorption isothermal loop could be elevated or suppressed relative to the bulk phase, as illustrated in the graphical abstract. As the surface energy (i.e., fluid–pore interaction) decreased, the isothermal vapor pressure increased, indicating a greater preference for the fluid to exist in the vapor state. Abstract:My means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations the mean radius of gyration and the end-to-end distance are calculated for a single chain in a solvent over a broad range of volume fractions, pressures and temperatures. Our results indicate that in general, the chain collapses as temperature increases at constant pressure, or as density decreases at constant temperature. A minimum in the radius of gyration and the end-to-end distance occurs near the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) and slightly above the coil-to-globule transition temperature, where the chain adopts a quasi-ideal conformation, defined by the balance of binary attractive and repulsive interactions. At temperatures well above the LCST, the chain expands again suggesting an Upper Critical Solution Temperature (UCST) phase boundary above the LCST, forming a closed immiscibility loop. However, this observation strongly depends on the solvent-to-monomer size ratio.

Abstract:Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate the supercritical phenomenon associated with the liquid-liquid phase transition of hydrogen by studying the isothermal response functions, such as electric conductivity, molecular dissociation coefficient and isothermal compressibility, with respect to pressure. We find that, along each isotherm in the supercritical region, each of these response functions shows a maximum, the location of which is different for different response functions. As temperature decreases, the loci of these maxima asymptotically converge to a line of zero ordering field, known as the Widom line along which the magnitude of the response function maxima becomes larger and larger until it diverges as the critical point is approached. Thus, our study provides a possible way to locate the liquid-liquid critical point of hydrogen from the supercritical region at lower pressures. It also indicates that the supercritical phonomenon near the critical point of hydrogen is a rather general feature of second-order phase transition, it is not only true for classical systems with weak interactions but also true for highly condensed system with strong inter-atomic interactions.
Liquid Polyamorphism: Some Unsolved Puzzles of Water in Bulk, Nanoconfined, and Biological Environments

Abstract:We investigate the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point in (i) Two models of water, TIP5P and ST2, which display a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures; (ii) the Jagla model, a spherically symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions; and (iii) A Hamiltonian model of water where the idea of two length/energy scales is built in; this model also displays a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures besides the first order liquid-gas phase transition at high temperatures. We find a correlation between the dynamic fragility crossover and the locus of specific heat maxima C-P(max) ("Widom line") emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between C-P(max) P and the dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bonded network liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line, an extension of the first-order coexistence line in the supercritical region. We present evidence from experiments and computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water displays polyamorphism, i.e., water separates into two distinct liquid phases. This concept of a new liquid-liquid phase transition is finding application to other liquids as well as water, such as silicon and silica. We also discuss related puzzles, such as the mysterious behavior of confined water and the "skin" of hydration water near a biomolecule. Specifically, using molecular dynamics simulations, we also investigate the relation between the dynamic transitions of biomolecules (lysozyme and DNA) and the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of hydration water. We find that the dynamic transition of the macromolecules, sometimes called a "protein glass transition", occurs at the temperature of dynamic crossover in the diffusivity of hydration water, and also coincides with the maxima of the isobaric specific heat C-P and the temperature derivative of the orientational order parameter. We relate these findings to the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid critical point in water. Our simulations are consistent with the possibility that the protein glass transition results from a change in the behavior of hydration water, specifically from crossing the Widom line.
Structural and Hydrogen Bond Analysis for Supercritical Ethanol: A Molecular Simulation Study

Abstract:Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to investigate supercritical ethanol using the OPLS–UA [W.L. Jorgensen, Optimized intermolecular potential functions for liquid alcohols, J. Phys. Chem. 90 (1986) 1276–1284] and TraPPE–UA [B. Chen, J.J. Potoff, J.I. Siepmann, Monte Carlo calculations for alcohols and their mixtures with alkanes. Transferable potentials for phase equilibria. Part 5: united-atom description of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, J. Phys. Chem. B 105 (2001) 3093–3104] force fields. Two potentials were compared and TraPPE potential performed better in reproducing densities as a function of pressure, so, it was selected in further structural analysis. The pair distribution functions were obtained and their pressure and temperature dependence were analyzed. In addition, a serial two dimensional distribution functions were plotted to depict the detailed structure of liquid and supercritical ethanol. Based on a widely used geometric criterion, hydrogen bonding statistical results showed that the hydrogen bonds become weaker but still exist under supercritical condition, which are in good agreement with recent experimental measurements. The hydrogen bonds of water, methanol and ethanol were compared and ethanol has nearly the same behavior as methanol under supercritical conditions.

Deviations are positive for water at all concentrations, and positive for glycerol in very dilute solutions but turning negative in concentrated ones. The all-atom and coarse-grained models reveal an unexpected crossover in the dynamics of the 1% and 10 % w/w glycerol at the lowest simulated temperatures. This crossover manifests in the diffusion coefficients of water and glycerol, as well as in the viscosity and lifetime of hydrogen-bonds in water. We interpret that the crossover originates on the opposing dependence with glycerol concentration of the two factors controlling the solution's slow-down: the increase in tetrahedrally coordinated water and the dynamics and clustering of the glycerol molecules. We anticipate that this dynamic crossover will also occur for solution of water with other polyols.

Abstract:The striking anomalies in physical properties of supercooled water that were discovered in the 1960-70s, remain incompletely understood and so provide both a source of controversy amongst theoreticians, and a stimulus to experimentalists and simulators to find new ways of penetrating the "crystallization curtain" that effectively shields the problem from solution. Recently a new door on the problem was opened by showing that, in ideal solutions, made using ionic liquid solutes, water anomalies are not destroyed as earlier found for common salt and most molecular solutes, but instead are enhanced to the point of precipitating an apparently first order liquid-liquid transition. The evidence was a spike in apparent heat capacity during cooling that could be fully reversed during reheating before any sign of ice crystallization appeared. Here, we use decoupled-oscillator infrared spectroscopy to define the structural character of this phenomenon using similar down and upscan rates as in the calorimetric study. Thin-film samples also permit slow scans (1 K/min) in which the transition has a width of less than 1 K, and is fully reversible. The OH spectrum changes discontinuously at the phase-transition temperature, indicating a discrete change in hydrogen-bond structure. The spectral changes show that the low-temperature liquid is more strongly hydrogen bonded and less disordered as compared to the high-temperature liquid. The spectrum of the low-temperature liquid is essentially that seen in low-density amorphous water. This similarity suggests that the liquid-liquid transition observed here also exists in neat undercooled water, providing a unified explanation for many of its anomalies.

Abstract:In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to investigate the sub/supercritical phase change of alcohol (methanol and ethanol)/ n -heptane mixtures. Obvious quasi-azeotropy and preferential evaporation phenomena appear for ethanol/ n -heptane mixtures under subcritical conditions, and the quasi-azeotropy intensity is significantly reduced for methanol/ n -heptane mixtures under the same conditions. Under supercritical conditions, the collapse of the gas-liquid interface occurs swiftly, and the Knudsen number rapidly drops below 0.1 after the transition to the supercritical state. Quasi-azeotropy and preferential evaporation phenomena are significantly suppressed at high pressures. According to the supercritical fluid structure, a new transition criterion based on the analysis of methyl cluster number and radial distribution function is proposed and validated against the vapor-liquid equilibrium data. In addition, detailed sub/supercritical phase change processes of different fuels are further revealed using the Voronoi tessellation, and the influences of ambient pressure, ambient temperature, and fuel composition on the phase change characteristics are explored. Ambient pressure exerts the most pronounced influence on the dimensionless transition time, which is defined as the ratio of transition time to lifetime and characterizes the proportion of sub/supercritical state relative to the lifetime, followed by alcohol composition. Ambient temperature has significant effects on the transition time and lifetime, while it has a limited influence on the dimensionless transition time.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Ternary mixtures, containing one hydrotrope and two immiscible fluids, both being soluble in the hydrotrope at any proportion, exhibit unexpected solubilization power and unusual mesoscopic properties, which are a subject of long-standing controversies for decades. Experiments: This work investigates the entire monophasic region of ternary trans-anethol/ethanol/water system, where multiscale nanostructurings with correlation lengths exceeding dimensions of individual molecules are identified by dynamic light scattering. The physical properties of the ternary mixture are characterized, with revealing the compositional dependence of refractive index and dynamic viscosity. Findings: In surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME) regime, the single phase consists of two distinct nano-scopic domains in equilibrium, one trans-anethol-rich aggregate at the molecular scale (-1 nm) and one mesoscopic droplet at the mesoscale (-100 nm). However, only a tiny fraction of the hydrophobic com-ponent trans-anethol (<-0.025%) are initially incorporated in mesoscale structures, and the vast major-ity are molecularly dissolved or in the form of aggregates. The concentration of mesoscopic droplets increases sharply when shifting toward the miscibility gap, but their size exhibits a weak compositional dependence. The nanoscopic domains exhibit long-term physical stability, and the Ostwald ripening is still the primary mechanism governing such mesoscopic droplet aging, but with a rather low ripening rate. Anomalous properties in the potential energy landscape of a monatomic liquid across the liquid-gas and liquid-liquid phase transitions

Abstract:As a liquid approaches the gas state, the properties of the potential energy landscape (PEL) sampled by the system become anomalous. Specifically, (i) the mechanically stable local minima of the PEL [inherent structures (IS)] can exhibit cavitation above the so-called Sastry volume, vS, before the liquid enters the gas phase. In addition, (ii) the pressure of the liquid at the sampled IS [i.e., the PEL equation of state, PIS(v)] develops a spinodal-like minimum at vS. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of a monatomic water-like liquid and verify that points (i) and (ii) hold at high temperatures. However, at low temperatures, cavitation in the liquid and the corresponding IS occurs simultaneously and a Sastry volume cannot be defined. Remarkably, at intermediate/high temperatures, the IS of the liquid can exhibit crystallization, i.e., the liquid regularly visits the regions of the PEL that belong to the crystal state. The model liquid considered also exhibits a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) between a low-density and a high-density liquid (LDL and HDL). By studying the behavior of PIS(v) during the LLPT, we identify a Sastry volume for both LDL and HDL. The HDL Sastry volume marks the onset above which IS are heterogeneous (composed of LDL and HDL particles), analogous to points (i) and (ii) above. However, the relationship between the LDL Sastry volume and the onset of heterogeneous IS is less evident. We conclude by presenting a thermodynamic argument that can explain the behavior of the PEL equation of state PIS(v) across both the liquid-gas phase transition and LLPT.
Phase behavior of metastable water from large-scale simulations of a quantitatively accurate model near ambient conditions: The liquid-liquid critical point

Abstract:The molecular mechanisms of water's unique anomalies are still debated upon. Experimental challenges have led to simulations suggesting a liquid-liquid (LL) phase transition, culminating in the supercooled region's LL critical point (LLCP). Computational expense, small system sizes, and the reliability of water models often limit these simulations. We adopt the CVF model, which is reliable, transferable, scalable, and efficient across a wide range of temperatures and pressures around ambient conditions. By leveraging the timescale separation between fast hydrogen bonds and slow molecular coordinates, the model allows a thorough exploration of the metastable phase diagram of liquid water. Using advanced numerical techniques to bypass dynamical slowing down, we perform finite-size scaling on larger systems than those used in previous analyses. Our study extrapolates thermodynamic behavior in the infinite-system limit, demonstrating the existence of the LLCP in the 3D Ising universality class in the low-temperature, low-pressure side of the line of temperatures of maximum density, specifically at TC = 186 ± 4 K and PC = 174 ± 14 MPa, at the end of a liquid-liquid phase separation stretching up to ∼200 MPa. These predictions align with recent experimental data and sophisticated models, highlighting that hydrogen bond cooperativity governs the LLCP and the origin of water anomalies. We also observe substantial cooperative fluctuations in the hydrogen bond network at scales larger than 10 nm, even at temperatures relevant to biopreservation. These findings have significant implications for nanotechnology and biophysics, providing new insights into water's behavior under varied conditions.
