Abstract:The present study investigated the residue depletion and WTs of EF and its main metabolite, ciprofloxacin, in largemouth bass after ad libitum administration in commercial fish farming based on statistical approaches. Samples collected at pre-determined time points were assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography. If the concentrations of medicine were less than the quantitative limit, they were set to be half of the limit of quantitative. The terminal elimination of the target compound was assumed to fit a one-compartment model. The statistical methods of Bartlett's test and Cochran's test were used to inspect the homogeneity of the log-transformed data. The lack-of-fit test and F-test were used to check the linearity of the regression line. Outliers were assessed using standardized residuals. The final WT was estimated using the 95% percentile with a 95% confidence level. The WTs of EF were calculated to be 46, 29, 33, 46, and 20 days for the muscle + skin, plasma, gill, kidney, and liver, respectively. After the risk assessment, the values of the hazard quotient were calculated to be far less than 1, indicating that the risk of residual EF was particularly low in the edible tissues of largemouth bass after medicine depletion for various WTs.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin (ENR) and sulfachloropyridazine combined with trimethoprim (TMP) were commonly used in poultries to treat bacterial infections. In this study, the pharmacokinetics of these antibiotics in four tissues of Taihe black-boned silky fowls was studied. The results showed that these drugs were absorbed and distributed rapidly, with the highest concentration showing in skin. Meanwhile, ENR and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) and TMP were depleted slowly, particularly in skin with the elimination half-lives being 37.1, 36.9, and 72.7 days, respectively. It may be attributed to the abundance of melanin in skin. The dietary risk assessment suggested that the long-term dietary intakes of ENR, CIP, and TMP showed a considerable threat to human health. Based on the experiment, the withdrawal times of 284 days for ENR + CIP and 159 days for TMP were acquired, which showed that these drugs are not appropriate for the application in Taihe black-boned silky fowls.

Abstract:The objective of the present study was to investigate the residue depletion of EF and CF in yellow catfish to estimate its WTs in plasma and tissues after multiple oral doses for 3 days at 20 mg/kg at 15, 20, and 25 °C. Samples were collected at pre-designed time points after oral doses. A validated method was performed to quantify EF and CF in plasma and tissues by high-performance liquid chromatography. Statistical differences were conducted using one-way ANOVA analysis. According to the maximum residue limit of China and Europe considering 95% percentile with 95% confidence, the WTs were estimated to be 44, 72, 66, 99, and 95 days at 15 °C; 32, 66, 65, 86, and 73 days at 20 °C; and 32, 61, 64, 55, and 59 days at 25 °C in the plasma, muscle and skin, gill, liver, and kidney, respectively. We found that increased temperature shortened the WTs in plasma and tissues. Therefore, this study can help the risk assessment of EF in aquatic products for human health at different temperatures to avoid residue violation.

Abstract:The pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of enrofloxacin were determined in Yellow River carp ( Cyprinus carpio haematopterus ) reared at 20°C after single oral administration of enrofloxacin at 10 mg·kg −1 body weight (BW). Plasma, bile, and different tissue samples, including liver, kidney, gill, gut, and skin-muscle, were collected at predetermined times points. An HPLC method was developed to simultaneously determine the concentrations of enrofloxacin and its metabolite, ciprofloxacin. However, ciprofloxacin was only detectable in some liver samples with trace levels. Then the average enrofloxacin concentrations vs. time data were subjected to a non-compartmental analysis using WinNonLin 5.2 software. Multiple peaking profiles were observed in all enrofloxacin concentration-time curves. The peak concentration (C max ) values were observed as 0.79, 1.01, 2.09, 2.85, 4.34, 10.78, and 13.07 μg·ml −1 (or g −1 ) in plasma, skin-muscle, gill, kidney, liver, bile, and gut, respectively, and the corresponding time to reach peak concentration (T max ) was 8, 8, 1, 8, 1, 72, and 4 h, respectively. The values of elimination half-life (T 1/2λ Z ) of enrofloxacin in different tissues was in the following order: gill (291.13 h) > liver (222.29 h) > kidney (157.22 h) > plasma (129.44 h) > gut (91.47 h) > skin-muscle (87.77 h) > bile (86.22 h). The present results showed that enrofloxacin had a wide distribution in different tissues, however slow absorption and elimination in Yellow River carp. Additionally, enrofloxacin exhibited large distribution in bile, indicating that bile excretion might be the primary elimination route of enrofloxacin in Yellow River carp. A withdrawal period was calculated as 379.2 °C-day for single oral dosing of enrofloxacin at 10 mg/kg BW. Based on the calculated PK/PD indices of AUC/MIC or C max /MIC, the current enrofloxacin dosing regimen might have a positive therapeutic effect on the infection of Flavobacterium columnare, Aeromonas sobria , or Aeromonas hydrophila . However, the depletion study following multiple oral doses should be carried out in Yellow River carp reared at lower temperatures, and the withdrawal period should also be further calculated.

Abstract:Abstract Enrofloxacin (EXF) in fish comes from feed, water, and the environment. Through these three sources enrofloxacin will accumulate in the body of the fish. Enrofloxacin enters the metabolic process and enters the tissue so that fish meat containing enrofloxacin will be produced, and can threaten human health such as the occurrence of carcinogenic potential. Tests have been carried out to test the time of decay of enrofloxacin in catfish after various doses, namely group A (control), B (25 ppb) and C (50 ppb). The fish samples analyzed were catfish which were tested by Enrofloxacin using the ELISA (Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method. The results showed that the last residual content of enrofloxacin was added to feed every day during the treatment of concentration for group B (17.89 ppb) and group C (17.47 ppb). However, the time for all enrofloxacin residues in catfish to be the same as the control or normal conditions turned out to take 80 days with enrofloxacin residual concentrations for group B (2.12 ppb) and group C (5.13 ppb)

Abstract:Gut microbiota play a vital role in fish health homeostasis. Antibiotics are known to alter microbial community composition and diversity; however, the substantial effects of antibiotics upon the gut microbiome with respect to immune-related pathways in healthy fish remain unclear. Accordingly, here we explored the impact of two antibiotics on the intestinal health, immune response, microbiome dynamics, and transcriptome profiles of grass carp. A two-week feeding trial was carried out in which the basal diet was complemented with enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg) or florfenicol (10 mg/kg). The results showed that: (1) Enrofloxacin and florfenicol both induced intestinal oxidative stress and reduced the digestive enzyme activity of grass carp. (2) High-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA revealed that enrofloxacin but not the florfenicol treatment influenced gut microbiota diversity in grass carp by shifting α/β-diversity with more abundant pathogens detected. (3) Transcriptome profiling demonstrated that florfenicol down-regulated the immune-related pathways of grass carp, and the network analysis revealed that IgA was negatively correlated with certain pathogens, such as Shewanella and Aeromonas . (4) Antibiotic-induced alternations of gut core microbes were revealed via immune-related transcripts, as were lower mRNA expression levels of mucosal-related genes. (5) Apoptosis and histopathological changes were detected in the enrofloxacin- and florfenicol-treated groups compared with the control group. Overall, administering antibiotics will promote oxidative stress, cause intestinal flora dysbiosis, inhibit the mucosal immune system, and induce apoptosis in grass carp.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin is a widely used antibiotic targeting DNA gyrase and has become the commonly detected micropollutant in aquatic environments. Thus, the potential toxicity of enrofloxacin to Spirulina platensis which is a kind of prokaryote similar to Gram-negative bacteria has been hypothesized. However, little is known about the toxicity and degradation mechanism of enrofloxacin during the growth process of Spirulina platensis. Herein, the biomass accumulation of Spirulina platensis was stimulated to 115% of the control group by 0.1 mg L-1 enrofloxacin (10th day), which could be removed probably through the metabolism. Further increasing the enrofloxacin level to 5.0 mg L-1 almost inhibited the growth and remediation ability of Spirulina platensis for 35 days. Environmental stress also caused the variations of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids) and primary biocomponents (proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates), reflecting the adaptation of Spirulina platensis for handling the negative effects of enrofloxacin. The detoxification mechanism was studied by identifying the degradation products of enrofloxacin, suggesting the occurrence of dealkylation and oxidation reactions primarily at the piperazine group. The decreased antimicrobial activity was confirmed by the reduced binding affinity of degradation products with enzymes. The obtained results could help us understand the role of enrofloxacin in the growth of Spirulina platensis, thus providing great support for employing Spirulina platensis in risk assessment and hazard reduction.

Abstract:Antibiotics are used to treat illnesses in animals and humans worldwide. Yet, many antibiotics and other secondary metabolites can contaminate the water supply, creating a substantial risk to human health. A comprehensive investigation is currently focusing on the systematic effects of dietary antibiotics on fish liver, particularly on their impacts on oxidative stress, transcriptome profiles, toxicity, and apoptosis. In the present study, healthy grass carp were treated orally with 10 mg/kg enrofloxacin or florfenicol for 14 days. The enzyme activity outcomes reflected that the administration of enrofloxacin or florfenicol could significantly induce oxidative stress by decreasing CAT, SOD and GPx and increasing MDA. In addition, KEGG analysis showed that both antibiotics activated the PPAR signal pathway. The expression levels of the six genes, namely FABP6, APOA1, CYP27A1, ACSL1, CPT1A, and ANGPTL4, in the PPAR signal pathway were determined to further clarify the transcriptomic data. Enrofloxacin induced apoptosis in grass carp liver tissue, while hepatocytes from grass carp treated with enrofloxacin and florfenicol activated cytotoxicity and apoptosis. The present study suggests that antibiotics can induce antioxidant stress, impair the immune system, and attenuate the PPAR signal pathway in the grass carp liver, thus being harmful to grass carp as a dietary supplement, mainly within the aquaculture industry.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to examine the pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of enrofloxacin (EF) and its metabolite, ciprofloxacin (CF), in yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) after a single oral dose of EF at 20 mg/kg at 20, 25, and 30 °C. Samples were collected at pre-designed time points and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescent detector. Results showed that most concentrations of EF and CF in plasma and tissues at the same time point at different temperatures were statistically significant. With the increase in temperature, the terminal half-life (T1/2λz) of EF and CF was first reduced from 20 to 25 °C but elevated from 25 to 30 °C in plasma, muscle + skin, gill, liver, and kidney, respectively. The area under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUClast) of EF were all decreased in plasma, muscle + skin, and gill except for that of EF in the liver and kidney. However, the AUClast and the apparent metabolic rate of CF were exhibited first elevated and then decreased trend. The apparent volume of distribution (Vz_F) of EF was first reduced from 20 to 25 °C but increased at 30 °C. The apparent total body clearance (CL_F) of EF was increased from 0.15 to 0.32 L/h·kg with the temperature elevation. These indicated that increased temperature markedly affected the PKs of EF and CF in yellow catfish. Through in-depth analysis, the EF dosage of 20 mg/kg is appropriate to use in yellow catfish at 20 and 25 °C but 30 °C.
Effects of environmentally relevant cypermethrin and sulfamethoxazole on intestinal health, microbiome, and liver metabolism in grass carp

Abstract:The incorrect use of antibiotics and pesticides poses significant risks of biological toxicity. Their simultaneous exposure could jeopardize fish health and hinder sustainable aquaculture. Here, we subjected grass carp to waterborne cypermethrin (0.65 μg/L) or/and sulfamethoxazole (0.30 μg/L) treatments for a duration of 6 weeks. We closely monitored the effects on intestinal function, the intestinal microbiome, and the liver metabolome. The results revealed that exposure to waterborne cypermethrin or/and sulfamethoxazole compromised intestinal barrier function and decreased the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins. Additionally, heightened levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the intestines and reduced antioxidant levels indicated systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, with more severe effects observed in the combined exposure group. 16S rRNA sequencing of intestinal tissues suggested Firmicutes play a key role in the intestinal microbiota. GC/MS metabolomics of the liver showed more differential metabolites (56) in the co-exposure group compared to cypermethrin (45) or sulfamethoxazole (32) alone, indicating greater toxicological effects with combined exposure. Our analyses also suggest that ATP-binding cassette transporters could serve as a novel endpoint for assessing the risk of pesticide and antibiotic mixtures in grass carp. In summary, this study underscores the potential ecological risks posed by antibiotics and pesticides to aquatic environments and products. It emphasizes the importance of the gut-liver axis as a comprehensive pathway for assessing the toxicity in fish exposed to environmental contaminants.

Abstract:Background: It has been reported that antibiotic enrofloxacin can impair reproductive function of mammals, induces multi-generational oscillatory effects on reproduction of Caenorhabditis elegans, and disturbes endocrine system in grass carp. Objectives: This study aims to explore the effect of short-term enrofloxacin exposure on sex steroid hormones biosynthesis in Carassius auratus var. Pengze through assessing the contents of growth hormone (GH), thyroid hormone 4 (T4), estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) in plasma, and investigating sex steroid hormones biosynthesis based on targeted metabonomics analysis, and determining expression level of some important genes, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (gnrh), gonadotropin hormone 1-β (gth1-β), gonadotropin hormone 2-β (gth2-β) and cyp19a1a in hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis (HPOA). Results: We found that short-term exposure of enrofloxacin disordered contents of E2 and T in plasma of fish determined by ELISA detection, T content elevation and E2 content decline, which was confirmed by the following data from targeted metabonomics analysis of plasma. The metabonomic results showed that both T and its upstream intermediate products during the process of sex steroid hormones biosynthesis in fish were increased significantly, but E2 content was decreased markedly. At the exposure 24 h of enrofloxacin, expression of gnrh in hypothalamus, gth1-β and gth2-β in pituitary were promoted. Meanwhile GH and T4 contents in plasma, two inducers of sex steroid hormones synthesis, were augmented, which indicated that sex steroid hormones biosynthesis was improved. However cyp19a1a expression in ovary was repressed, and content of estriol (E3) was upregulated. These data suggested that enrofloxacin promoted sex steroid hormones biosynthesis and conversion of E2 to estriol (E3), but inhibited the conversion of T to E2. Finally, content of E2 was declined sharply. Discussion: Animal specific antibacterial enrofloxacin is widely detectable in aquatic ecosystem, exposure of the agent can induce adverse effects on plants and animals. This study firstly evidenced induction of disruption of sex steroid hormones by enrofloxacin in fish, which indicates enrofloxacin is an endocrine disruption compound that can induce endocrine disruption of animals, including fish.
Pharmacokinetics of Enrofloxacin and Its Metabolite Ciprofloxacin in Nanyang Cattle

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin and its metabolite, ciprofloxacin, in Nanyang cattle after a single intravenous (IV), and intramuscular (IM) administration of enrofloxacin at 2.5 mg/kg body weight (BW). Blood samples were collected at predetermined time points. Enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin concentrations in plasma were simultaneously determined using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay method and subjected to a non-compartmental analysis. After IV administration, enrofloxacin had a mean (±SD) volume of distribution at steady state (VSS) of 1.394 ± 0.349 L/kg, a terminal half-life (t1/2λz) of 3.592 ± 1.205 h, and a total body clearance (Cl) of 0.675 ± 0.16 L/h/kg. After IM administration, enrofloxacin was absorbed relatively slowly but completely, with a mean absorption time (MAT) of 6.051 ± 1.107 h and a bioavailability of 99.225 ± 7.389%. Both compounds were detected simultaneously in most plasma samples following both routes of administration, indicating efficient biotransformation of enrofloxacin to ciprofloxacin. After IV injection, the peak concentration (Cmax) of ciprofloxacin was 0.315 ± 0.017 μg/mL, observed at 0.958 ± 0.102 h. Following IM injection, the corresponding values were 0.071 ± 0.006 μg/mL and 3 ± 1.095 h, respectively. Following IV and IM administration, the conversion ratio of enrofloxacin to ciprofloxacin was calculated as 59.2 ± 9.6% and 31.2 ± 7.7%, respectively. The present results demonstrated favorable pharmacokinetic profiles for enrofloxacin, characterized by complete absorption with relatively slow kinetics, extensive distribution, efficient biotransformation to ciprofloxacin, and prolonged elimination in Nanyang cattle.
Elimination kinetics of eugenol in grass carp in a simulated transportation setting

Abstract:BackgroundFish are vulnerable to stress from over-crowding during transportation and eugenol is the most common sedative used to minimize fish injury. The ADI value of 2.5 mg/kg is recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. The aim of this work was to study the elimination kinetics of eugenol following exposure of grass carp to a eugenol bath in a simulated transportation setting.ResultsGrass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (120 fish) were exposed for 24 h to a 10 mg/L eugenol bath. Sampling was performed during a 96 h period after the 24 h bath. Eight fish were sampled at each time point and muscle, plasma and liver concentrations of the drug were determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The concentration-time data of eugenol in each tissue were analyzed using non-compartmental methods. The peak concentrations (Cmax) in plasma, muscle and liver were 7.68, 5.30 and 24.63 mg/kg and the elimination half-lives (t1/2β) were 19.79, 10.27 and 55.28 h, respectively. The clearance (CL) values were 0.10, 0.44 and 0.04 L/h/kg and the areas under the concentration-time curve (AUC0-96h) were 91.54, 22.44, and 214.12 mg·h/L in plasma, muscle and liver, respectively. After a eugenol exposure bath, drug concentrations in muscle tissue of grass carp were below 1 mg/kg at 8 h and 0.1 mg/kg at 24 h.ConclusionsThe drug concentrations in muscle tissue at 8 h were lower than the recommended ADI value.

Abstract:Diflubenzuron has been applied in agriculture and aquaculture, and its residues in ecological environment and food chain could result in chronic exposure and long-term toxicity effects for human health. However, limited information is available regarding diflubenzuron levels in fish and associated risk assessment. This study performed the analysis for dynamic bioaccumulation and elimination distribution of diflubenzuron in carp tissues. The results indicated that diflubenzuron was absorbed and enriched by fish body along with higher enrichment in lipid-rich tissues of fish. The peak concentration in carp muscle reached 6-fold of diflubenzuron concentration in aquaculture water. The median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) of diflubenzuron at 96 h was 12.29 mg/L, presented low toxicity to carp. Risk assessment results showed that the chronic risk from dietary exposure to diflubenzuron through carp consumption for Chinese residents of children and adolescents, adults and elderly people were acceptable, while posed a certain risk for young children. This study provided the reference for pollution control, risk assessment and scientific management of diflubenzuron.

Abstract:Extensive and high residue variations in enrofloxacin (ENR) exist in different aquatic products. A novel quantitative method for measuring ENR using high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was developed employing enrofloxacin-d5 (ENR-d5) and enrofloxacin-d3 (ENR-d3) as isotope surrogates. This reduced the deviation of detected values, which results from the overpass of the linear range and/or the large difference in the residue between the isotope standard and ENR, from the actual content. Furthermore, high residue levels of ENR can be directly diluted and re-calibrated by the corresponding curve with the addition of high levels of another internal surrogate without repeated sample preparation, avoiding the overflow of the instrument response. The validation results demonstrated that the method can simultaneously determine ENR residues from MQL (2 μg/kg) to 5000 × MQL (method quantification limit) with recoveries between 97.1 and 106%, and intra-precision of no more than 2.14%. This method realized a wide linear calibration range with dual deuterated isomers, which has not been previously reported in the literature. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of ENR in different aquatic products, with ENR residue levels varying from 108 to 4340 μg/kg and an interval of precision in the range of 0.175~6.72%. These results demonstrate that batch samples with a high variation in ENR residues (over the linear range with a single isotope standard) can be detected by the dual isotope surrogates method in a single sample preparation process.

Antibiotic residues in commercial freshwater fish from southeast China: distribution and human health risk assessment

Abstract:We investigated 14 antibiotic residues in 8 marketed freshwater fish species from southeast China and estimated the associated health risks to local consumers. The antibiotic residues were determined by UPLC-MS/MS. Our findings revealed widespread distribution of quinolones (QNs), tetracyclines (TCs), and chloramphenicols (CAPs) in the freshwater fish. Notably, the average concentrations of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin reached levels as high as 62.5 μg/kg wet weight (ww) and 11.7 μg/kg ww, respectively, and detection frequencies were 68.7% for enrofloxacin and 31.6% for ciprofloxacin. Additionally, we detected chloramphenicol, a prohibited antibiotic, in samples with a detection frequency of 0.76%. Among the fish species, the mean concentration of total antibiotic residues was highest in bluntnose black bream (263.3 μg/kg), followed by English perch (52.4 μg/kg), crucian carp (46.3 μg/kg), black carp (28.6 μg/kg), yellowcheek carp (21.0 μg/kg), grass carp (15.3 μg/kg), bighead carp (3.78 μg/kg), and mandarin fish (3.69 μg/kg). We estimated the daily intake values of these antibiotic residues which were lower than the acceptable daily intake values and hazard indexes were much less than 1. It indicates that there is very low direct health risk to consumers. Despite that, investigation on the chronic impact, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria, gut microbiota disruption, and allergic reactions, is urgently needed.

Abstract:The residue levels of 6 quinolones in 160 cultured fish samples from Shandong Province, China were investigated using UPLC-MS/MS. The detection rate was 43.1% and enrofloxacin had the highest detection rate as well as the highest residue concentration. The violation rates were 2.50% for the sum of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin and 1.25% for ofloxacin. Among the 9 fish species, quinolone contamination problems should receive more attention in Carp, Grass carp, Crucian and Catfish. The health risk assessment showed that when calculated by the maximum concentration, the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of Carp, Grass carp and Crucian for the high consumption group accounted for more than 10% of the acceptable daily intakes (ADIs), indicating that a large intake of these fish species might pose a potential health risk and health risk monitoring of quinolones in cultured fish should be continually performed.

Abstract:Livestock manure is a major source of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Elucidation of the residual characteristics of ARGs in livestock manure following the administration of veterinary antibiotics is critical to assess their ecotoxicological effects and environmental contamination risks. Here, we investigated the effects of enrofloxacin (ENR), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly used as a therapeutic drug in animal husbandry, on the characteristics of ARGs, mobile genetic elements, and microbial community structure in swine manure following its intramuscular administration for 3 days and a withdrawal period of 10 days. The results revealed the highest concentrations of ENR and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in swine manure at the end of the administration period, ENR concentrations in swine manure in groups L and H were 88.67 ± 45.46 and 219.75 ± 88.05 mg/kg DM, respectively. Approximately 15 fluoroquinolone resistance genes (FRGs) and 48 fluoroquinolone-related multidrug resistance genes (F-MRGs) were detected in swine manure; the relative abundance of the F-MRGs was considerably higher than that of the FRGs. On day 3, the relative abundance of qac A was significantly higher in group H than in group CK, and no significant differences in the relative abundance of other FRGs, F-MRGs, or MGEs were observed between the three groups on day 3 and day 13. The microbial community structure in swine manure was significantly altered on day 3, and the altered community structure was restored on day 13. The FRGs and F-MRGs with the highest relative abundance were qac A and ade F, respectively, and Clostridium and Lactobacillus were the dominant bacterial genera carrying these genes in swine manure. In summary, a single treatment of intramuscular ENR transiently increased antibiotic concentrations and altered the microbial community structure in swine manure; however, this treatment did not significantly affect the abundance of FRGs and F-MRGs.

Abstract:Antibiotics are emerging pollutants in our environment. These treatments have been widely used for their low cost, convenient use, and prominent effects. However, the prolonged or excessive use of such drugs can cause toxicity in aquatic organisms. These effects include genotoxicity, metabolic alteration, delayed development and decreased immunity, which carry further risks for ecological systems. In the present study, juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to norfloxacin (NOR) for 42 days, with NOR concentrations ranging from 100 ng/L to 1 mg/L, to assess the effects of environmental concentrations of antibiotics, to investigate the effects of NOR on intestinal morphology, enzymatic activity, and transcriptomic levels of RNA in fish, as well as a risk assessment on human health was carried out. The results demonstrated that oxidative stress was induced, the barrier function of the intestine was damaged, and changes occurred in the expression of immune-related genes in fish chronically exposed to antibiotics. Moreover, NOR could affect the regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Thus, environmental concentrations of antibiotics can influence the intestinal health of fish and potentially posing health risks to humans.
