Abstract:Seawater, as an alternative magnesium (Mg) source, has the potential to improve the overall economic and environmental footprint of struvite production compared to the use of pure Mg salts. However, the presence of other ions in seawater may affect the migration of tetracyclines (TCs), commonly found in wastewater, potentially reducing the quality of the recovered product, and posing environmental risks. But these effect has not been illustrated before. This study investigated the impact of seawater on oxytetracycline (OTC) migration during struvite recovery from swine wastewater. Under varying pH levels and Mg/P molar ratios, the OTC content in recovered struvite was ranged from 19 to 103 μg/g, which was 6 to 43 μg/g when using MgCl2 as Mg source. The key factor influencing OTC content was identified as Ca2+ in seawater. The co-precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and the incorporation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were the primary reasons for increased OTC content. Interactions between Ca2+ on HAP surfaces and the carbonyl oxygen of OTC, along with ternary complex formations involving Ca2+, DOM, and OTC, facilitated OTC migration through adsorption onto struvite. Notably, increasing the Mg/P molar ratio reduced OTC enrichment due to the competition between Ca2+ and Mg2+. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported these interfacial interactions. These findings enhanced the understanding of antibiotic migration during phosphorus (P) recovery using seawater as alternative Mg source and suggested solutions for reducing P recovery contamination in the future.

Abstract:Struvite biomineralization is an ecologically sound technology, adept at the efficient recovery and recycling of phosphorus from wastewater. However, the biomineralization process is often perturbed by the presence of antibiotics, notably tetracycline (TC), the impact of which on the biomineralization system has not been elucidated. This study examines the efficacy of Bacillus cereus LB-9 in struvite biomineralization, focusing on the precipitates' composition, morphology, and TC content. LB-9 facilitate an alkaline environment that effectively recovering nitrogen and phosphorus. These findings indicate that TC retards the initial formation of struvite and the concurrent recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, at concentrations below 10 mg/L TC concentrations, TC enhanced struvite production (0.38g) by stimulating LB-9's growth and metabolic activity. Conversely, at a concentration of 10 mg/L TC, the strain's activity was markedly suppressed within the initial four days. This data suggests that TC promotes the strain's proliferation and metabolism, potentially through cellular secretions, thereby augmenting phosphorus recovery from wastewater. Notably, the recovered struvite doesn't contain TC, aligning with regulatory standards for agricultural application. In summary, LB-9-mediated struvite recovery is an effective strategy for producing phosphorus-enriched fertilizers and mitigating TC contamination, offering significant implications for wastewater treatment and industrial process development, particularly in the context of prevalent TC in wastewater.

Abstract:Struvite precipitation and reuse from phosphorus-rich wastewater are cost-effective measures to improve phosphorus utilization efficiency and decrease its negative environmental impact. However, the presence of antibiotics may accumulate in recovered struvite, making it ecologically unsafe by spreading antibiotic resistance genes. In this review, the effects of antibiotics on struvite precipitation, and their participating mechanisms were investigated. The effects of pH, dissolved organic matter, and suspended solids were discussed and possible antibiotics minimization solutions were critically analyzed. It is concluded that antibiotic residue in struvite from real streams is more sensitive to pH change than synthetic wastewater, while dissolved organic matter promotes its accumulation. Among these influencing factors analyzed, dissolved organic matter and ionic composition show a larger influence on the transport of antibiotics into struvite, followed by pH and initial concentration of antibiotics. It is also highlighted that more efficient technology for antibiotics minimization during struvite formation should be developed to make the recovered struvite commercially available from the ecological safety perspective.

Abstract:Struvite (MgNH4PO4ꞏ6H2O) is a precipitation product that can be obtained in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and represents a promising fertilizer and technical solution for phosphorus recovery. Struvite can be recovered from the wastewater stream, during sludge digestion or by accelerated acid leaching from sludge followed by solid–liquid separation and struvite precipitation from the liquid phase. Moreover, struvite can be precipitated from industrial effluents or agricultural wastes. The resulting products are of different purity. Antibiotic residues are a relevant class of contaminants as already traces can induce or promote the development of antibiotic resistance in the environment. The aim of the current study was a screening of struvite raw materials precipitated by different processes in German WWTPs for their contamination by selected antibiotics out of the classes of sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs) and tetracyclines (TCs). Slightly higher antibiotic residues were detected when struvite was precipitated from the solid phase with a maximum of 133 μg TCs, 484 μg FQs and 8 μg SAs compared to 8 μg TCs, 86 μg FQs and 9 μg SAs per kg dry weight (DW) when struvite was obtained from the liquid phase. FQs were most frequently found in low but quantifiable concentrations in almost all struvite raw materials. Yet, the contamination level of struvite from WWTPs can generally be regarded as low compared to sewage sludge. Products received from effluents from the food industry were found to be almost free of antibiotic residues.

Abstract:Few investigations take the combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics into consideration during the recovery of phosphorus through struvite crystallization. In this study, the adsorption and precipitation behaviors of Zn(II), Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) with struvite-loaded zeolite (SZ) were investigated by batch experiments. SZ was obtained through reclaiming phosphate from swine wastewater to MgO-loaded zeolite. Experimental results proved that heavy metals and TC were stored by SZ primarily through precipitation and physical adsorption, respectively, with partition coefficients of 191.9 L/kg for Cu(II), 112.5 L/kg for Zn(II) and 1333 L/kg for TC in ternary-pollutant systems. With the presence of Cu(II), the adsorption capacities of SZ for TC increased by around five times, whilst Zn(II) inhibit TC adsorption onto SZ. Cu(II) precipitation was hindered by TC and Zn(II) resulting in less Cu5(PO4)2(OH)4 formation on SZ. The effects of TC on Zn(II) precipitation by SZ were reversed with the variation of Zn(II) or Cu(II) concentration in solution due to two antagonistic effects—restriction of surface-induced precipitation and alleviation of competition interactions. In addition, high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) decreased the storage of Zn(II), Cu(II) and TC by SZ through competition effects. This study demonstrated that heavy metals and antibiotics in wastewaters could be simultaneously adsorbed and precipitated by struvite products, which was greatly affected by the complexing species and competing ions of the pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:Phosphorus, as a non-renewable element, is flowing out too fast in the past decades. To sustain the development of this globally scarce resource, efficient measures were taken to recover more phosphorus in the struvite form from wastewater. However, heavy metals in the wastewater might produce an inhibitory effect on phosphorus recovery, and even worse, pollutants might be incorporated in/onto the crystals precipitated. Impurities on struvite will reduce the quality of struvite as a potential slow-release fertilizer and affect the safe application of struvite in agriculture. This review aims to identify the trends in the literature to present the residues of heavy metals in struvite. It summarizes the current status in the residues of main metal elements on crystals and its response to wastewater properties, composition, and oxidation state of metals. The adsorption process and potential adsorption mechanism of heavy metals during the struvite crystallization are deeply explored, which might determine the latter release rate of metals when applying into the soil. Possible solutions are further provided to minimize the amounts of heavy metals mainly through adjusting operational conditions or employing pretreatment methods. Finally, this review critically analyzes the limitation gap between theory and actual generalization and potential application of struvite products in the market, and corresponding perspectives in the future are given to safely utilize the phosphorus resource from wastewater in the form of struvite.
Phosphorus recovery via struvite crystallization in batch and fluidized-bed reactors: Roles of microplastics and dissolved organic matter

Abstract:Struvite crystallization, a promising technology for nutrient recovery from wastewater, is facing considerable challenges due to the presence of emerging contaminants such as microplastics (MPs) ubiquitously found in wastewater. Here, we investigate the roles of MPs and humic acid (HA) in struvite crystallization in batch and fluidized-bed reactors (FBRs) using synthetic and real wastewater with a Mg:N:P molar ratio of 1:3:(1-1.3) at an initial pH of 11. Batch reactor (BR) experiment results show that MPs expedited the nucleation and growth rates of struvite (e.g., the rate of crystal growth in the presence of 30 mg L-1 of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was 1.43 times higher than that in the blank system), while HA hindered the formation of struvite. X-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement analysis revealed that the presence of MPs and HA can result in significant changes in phase compositions of the reclaimed precipitates, with over 80 % purity of struvite found in the precipitates from suspensions in the presence of 30 mg L-1 of MPs. Further characterizations demonstrated that MPs act as seeds of struvite nucleation, spurring the formation of well-defined struvite, while HA favors the formation of newberyite rather than struvite in both reactors. These findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the interactions between emerging contaminants and struvite crystallization processes to optimize nutrient recovery strategies for mitigating their adverse impact on the quality and yield of struvite-based fertilizers. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The presence of microplastics in wastewater poses a significant challenge to struvite crystallization for nutrient recovery, as it accelerates nucleation and growth rates of struvite crystals. This can lead to changes in the phase compositions of the reclaimed precipitates, with implications for the quality and yield of struvite-based fertilizers. Additionally, the presence of humic acid hinders the formation of struvite, favoring the formation of other minerals like newberyite. Understanding the interactions between emerging contaminants and struvite crystallization processes is crucial for optimizing nutrient recovery strategies and mitigating the environmental impact of these contaminants on water quality and struvite-based fertilizers.

Abstract:The simultaneous presence of antibiotics and phosphate (P) in wastewater will threaten human health and ecological security. The purpose of this study is to study the simultaneous removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and P in water by O3/CaO2 advanced oxidation process. With enhancing CaO2 dosage, the degradation efficiency of OTC first improved and then declined, whereas the removal efficiency of P kept increasing. Increasing the amount of O3 increased the removal efficiency of OTC, but had little effect on the removal efficiency of P. With 0.80 g/L CaO2 and 0.50 g/h O3, the removal efficiency of OTC and P reached 98.0 % and 90.5 % respectively. The lower OTC concentration was beneficial to OTC degradation and P precipitation. The P concentration has no effect on OTC degradation, but it would affect itself precipitation. Alkaline environment was conducive to OTC degradation and P removal. ·OH, ·O2 −, 1O2 made major contribution to the degradation of OTC, which was verified by ESR technique and free radical capture experiment. During the degradation of OTC and P removal, TOC and COD values decreased, while pH and conductivity showed a downward trend. Based on UV–Vis spectrum, 3D EEMF spectrum and LC-MS analysis, two main degradation pathways of OTC were proposed. Toxicity analysis of intermediates showed that their toxicity was significantly lower than that of OTC. The O3/CaO2 system can be considered as an efficient and prospective method for the simultaneous removal of OTC and P in water.

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge as a promising technology showed great resistance to adverse conditions. However, the interaction between oxytetracycline (OTC) and granular sludge was not studied sufficiently. This study therefore investigated OTC-tolerance ability of incomplete and complete granulation sludge from aspects of simultaneous nutrients removal, sludge characteristics, microbial activity, community changes, and vice versa OTC removal performance. Incomplete granulation sludge showed better denitrification performance and resistance. Whereas, denitrification and phosphorus removal of complete granulation sludge suffered a permanent collapse under 5 mg/L OTC. OTC could be removed by rapid adsorption and slow biodegradation via granular sludge. The EPS, especially TB-PS, played a significant role during the operational period subjected to OTC. The major genera of Lysobacter and Candidatus_Competibacter laid the biological basis for stability and functionality of granules, which acted as the putative contributors for resisting and removing OTC. This study showed that incomplete-granulated sludge qualified more promising application prospect.

Abstract:The increasing presence of oxytetracycline (OTC) in agricultural soils has raised global environmental concerns. We investigated the environmental behavior and fate of OTC in two types of tropical agricultural soils, focusing on the impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from biogas slurry. Techniques such as three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV–vis) were used to explore the adsorption mechanisms. Our findings revealed that biogas slurry-derived DOM decreased the OTC adsorption on soils and extended the time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Specifically, the equilibrium adsorption of OTC by the two soils decreased by 19.41 and 15.32 %, respectively. These adsorption processes were effectively modelled by Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, linear, and Freundlich thermodynamic models. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that OTC adsorption onto soils was spontaneous and endothermic, with competitive interactions between biogas slurry-derived DOM and OTC molecules intensifying at higher DOM concentrations. The adsorption mechanisms were governed by both physical and chemical processes. Furthermore, the presence of Ca 2+ and Na + ions significantly inhibited OTC adsorption. These insights advanced our understanding of the fate and risk of OTC in soil environments influenced by DOM, contributing to more informed agricultural and environmental management practices.

Abstract:Nitrification is a crucial step in removing nitrogen from wastewater, but it often fails in industrial wastewater treatment due to the lack of knowledge regarding the impacts of environmental factors on nitrifying bacteria. This study aimed to recover the nitrification performance of a full-scale pharmaceutical wastewater treatment system inhibited by high organic and oxytetracycline (OTC) loadings. A bench-scale nitrifying reactor was used to treat OTC production wastewater under various organic loading rates (OLRs) and influent OTC concentrations, and the derived threshold values were used to guide the optimization of the full-scale system. Changes in physicochemical and biological parameters including antibiotic resistome were monitored to track the recovery process. After simultaneously reducing the OLR and influent OTC concentration to 0.111±0.025 g·COD/g·MLSS/d and 9.69±1.54 mg/L, respectively, the abundances of amo A gene and Nitrobacter quickly increased to (4.87±1.88) × 10 7 and (1.07±0.41) × 10 7 copies/L, and did not change much thereafter. Partial nitrification (about 50%) occurred 18 days later, while it took another 18 days to achieve complete nitrification. Batch nitrification test revealed that the adsorbed OTC at a concentration above 1,630 mg·OTC/kg·MLSS could inhibit the nitrification performance, which should be the main reason responsible for the slow recovery of complete nitrification considering the relatively high adsorbed OTC in activated sludge (from 23,280±2204 to 2936±221 mg·OTC/g·MLSS). The relative abundances of resistome and high-risk resistant determinants decreased by 63.2% and 67.8% along with the recovery process. This study deepened our understanding of the impacts of environmental factors on nitrification, and could guide the optimization of the pharmaceutical wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:The fast development of struvite precipitation provides an excellent opportunity for cost-effective removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus in swine wastewater. Meanwhile, swine wastewater is rich in heavy metals and organic matters, whose interaction might change heavy metals' distribution and toxicity in recovered struvite. This research investigates the effect of organic matter on heavy metals' speciation variation during phosphorus (P) recovery. The results demonstrate that when the concentration of citric acid, humic acid, and tetracycline increases from 0 to 500 mg/L, the P recovery efficiency decreases from 95.14% to 85.39%, 81.76%, and 74.28%, respectively. When the concentration of ammonium citrate, tetrasodium iminodisuccinate, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid vary from 0 to 100 mg/L, the P recovery efficiency decreases from 95.14 to 83.21, 85.97, and 81.32 mg/L, respectively, while the Cr in recovered struvite is increased from 1.88 to 2.92 mg/kg, 1.58–2.64 mg/kg and 0.86–12.6 mg/kg, respectively. It could be concluded that the pH increase promotes Cr and Cu's toxicity shifting to a stable state under the presence of citric acid, while Cr and Cu with humic acid or tetracycline shift to an active state. Besides, chelating agents can reduce heavy metal contents in the recovered struvite, but they also significantly inhibit the P recovery efficiency.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for stringent discharge regulations, the efficient removal of non-biodegradable organic (hard COD) from the biological effluent of pharmaceutical wastewater is becoming increasingly important. Enhanced hydrolysis pretreatment has been used to remove antibiotic potency in antibiotic production wastewater before biological treatment, while the resulting transformation products (TPs) and their contribution to hard COD are largely unknown. Herein, we combine target and non-target analysis aiming to find the major oxytetracycline (OTC) TPs after enhanced hydrolysis pretreatment and to quantify their contribution to the hard COD in biological effluents. Three literature-known and 15 yet unknown TPs, most of which could not be biodegraded, were identified during lab-scale hydrolysis of OTC under neutral conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance and combined density functional theory were used to determine and infer the molecular structures and possible hydrolysis pathways of them. Furthermore, two stable and dominant TPs, M390s (M390-1 and M390-2), were separated, purified, and structurally identified, which could account for 21.0% and 14.9% − 20.4% (molar ratio) of the initial OTC in the lab-scale and field studies, respectively. More importantly, M390s account for 4.5–––7.8% of the hard COD in biological effluents. The results indicate that the contribution of antibiotic TPs to hard COD in wastewater could not be ignored, and provide more knowledge regarding the efficient treatment of antibiotic production wastewater.

Abstract:Aquaculture wastewater contained a high remnant of oxytetracycline (OTC) and nitrate. In this study, OTC co-metabolized with denitrification/desulfurization was investigated in terms of kinetic analysis, pathway, microbial communities and produces analysis in sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) mediated system. Long-term acclimatization with sulfate (300 mg-S/L) could markedly accelerate the removed rate of OTC from 0.9 to 1.4 mg/g-SS/d, with the kinetic constants increasing from 0.2760 to 0.5232 d−1, mainly via enzymes including adenosine-5′-phos-phosulfate reductase and cytochrome P450, and non-enzymatic process related to intermediates (adenosine-5′-phos-phosulfate and S0). Furthermore, OTC was likely detoxified by SRB enriched sludge mainly via hydrolysis, dehydration, oxidation and reduction. The denitrification process would postpone the OTC degradation via outcompeting electron donors with the desulfurization process. Redundancy analysis suggested that sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (Acidithiobacillus, Ochrobactrum) were highly related to OTC degradation processes. This study provides deep insight and a new opportunity for the treatment of aquaculture wastewater containing OTC, sulfate and nitrate by SRB sludge.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has important impacts on the transportation of antibiotics through chemical and biological processes in composting. The interaction between DOM and antibiotics is reciprocal. The interaction between DOM ligands and antibiotics could be characterized based on a technique combining parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and microbial community structure analysis. However, PARAFAC cannot reveal the dynamic changes in each DOM peak in one PARAFAC component under antibiotic stress. In this study, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) combined with PARAFAC and bacterial community diversity analyses were employed to reveal the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) stress and the key microorganisms on the transformation of different fluorescent peaks from DOM PARAFAC components during chicken manure composting. The results showed that OTC inhibits the transformation between DOM PARAFAC components by inhibiting the core microbial activities involved in the transformation of DOM components. Protein-like components (C1 and C2) were more sensitive to OTC residue, and components with a high humification degree promoted the degradation of OTC. The interaction between special DOM PARAFAC components and certain bacteria affects the degradation of OTC. The DOM PARAFAC components A2(C1), B1(C2), B2(C2) and Z1(C4) enhanced OTC degradation by stimulating the genera Pseudomonas , Glycomyces and Hyphomicrobium . With these promising results, the true effect of DOM PARAFAC components on the degradation of OTC can be revealed, which is helpful for addressing antibiotic contamination to improve the bioavailability of compost products.

Abstract:Struvite recovered from wastewater contains high concentration of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), porcine adenoviruses (PAdV) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), becoming potential resources of these microbial hazards. Understanding the precipitation behavior of pathogenic indicators and ARGs with suspended solids (SS) will provide the possible strategy for the control of co-precipitation. In this study, SS was divided into high-density SS (separated by centrifugation) and low-density SS (further separated by filtration), and the role of SS on the co-precipitation of FIB, PAdV and ARGs was investigated. The distribution analysis showed that 35.5–73.0% FIB, 79.6% PAdV and 64.5–94.8% ARGs existed in high-density SS, while the corresponding values were 26.9–64.4%, 11.7% and 3.5–24.3% in low-density SS. During struvite generation, 82.7−96.9% FIB, 75.5% PAdV and 56.3–86.5% ARGs were co-precipitated into struvite. High-density SS contributed 20.7−68.5% FIB, 63.9% PAdV and 38.7–87.2% ARGs co-precipitation, and the corresponding contribution of low-density SS was 31.4−79.2%, 3.9% and 6.2–54.7%. Moreover, the precipitated SS in struvite obviously decreased inactivation efficiency of FIB and ARGs in drying process. These results provide a potential way to control the co-precipitation and inactivation of FIB, PAdV and ARGs in struvite through removing high-density SS prior to struvite recovery.

Abstract:Struvite recovery shows significant potential for simultaneously recovering nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from swine wastewater but is challenged by the occurrence and transformation of antibiotic residuals. Electrochemically mediated struvite precipitation with sacrificial magnesium anode (EMSP-Mg) is promising due to its automation and chemical-free merits. However, the fate of antibiotics remains underexplored. We investigated the behavior of sulfadiazine (SD), an antibiotic frequently detected but less studied than others within the EMSP-Mg system. Significantly less SD (≤ 5%) was co-precipitated with recovered struvite in EMSP-Mg than conventional chemical struvite precipitation (CSP) processes (15.0 to 50.0%). The reduced SD accumulation in struvite recovered via EMSP was associated with increased pH and electric potential differences, which likely enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between SD and struvite. In contrast, the typical strategies used in enhancing P removal in the EMSP-Mg system, including increasing the Mg/P ratio or the Mg-release rates, have shown negligible effects on SD adsorption. Furthermore, typical coexisting ions (Ca 2+ , Cl − , and HCO 3 − ) inhibited SD adsorption onto recovered products. These results provide new insights into the interactions between antibiotics and struvite within the EMSP-Mg system, enhancing our understanding of antibiotic migration pathways and aiding the development of novel EMSP processes for cleaner struvite recovery.

Abstract:Phosphorus is one of the controlling factors for water eutrophication, but it is also an essential nutrient for all living organisms and non-renewable resource. A feasibility study on PO43− recovery and conversion to struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O), a slow-release fertilizer, has been reported. However, the fertilizer efficiency of struvite is determined by its purity, which depends on the forms and molar ratio of reactants under different initial pH of the solution. Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to determine the optimum initial pH of the solution and molar ratio of reactants on struvite crystallization. Meanwhile, the purity of the synthesis product struvite was analyzed. The experiment results revealed the optimum initial pH being 10 with molar ratio of PO43−:Mg2+:NH4+= 1:1.3:1 and 1:2:5 for struvite formation, which the removal of the PO43−, Mg2+ and NH4+ being 98, 92, 95% and 99.5, 85, 90%, respectively. A chemical equilibrium model (Visual Minteq) corroborated the experimental results. Thus, the possibility of synthesizing struvite from simulated wastewater utilizing the phosphate ions (PO43−) was confirmed.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential element for life and is predicted to deplete within the next 100 years. Struvite crystallization is a potential phosphorus recovery technique to mitigate this problem by producing a slow release fertilizer. However, complex wastewater composition and a large number of process variables result in process uncertainties, making the process difficult to predict and control. This paper reviews the research progress on struvite crystallization fundamentals to address this challenge. The influence of manipulated variables (e.g. seed material, magnesium dosage and pH) and sources of variation on phosphorus removal efficiency (e.g. organics and heavy metal concentration) and product purity were investigated. Recently developed models to describe, control and optimize those variables were also discussed. This review helps to identify potential challenges in different wastewater streams and provide valuable information for future phosphorus recovery unit design. It therefore paves the way for commercialization of struvite crystallization in the future.
