Abstract:Global pollution has exacerbated accumulation of toxicants like methylmercury (MeHg) in seafood. Human exposure to MeHg has been associated with long-term neurodevelopmental delays and impaired cardiovascular health, while many micronutrients in seafood are beneficial to health. The largest MeHg exposure source for many general populations originates from marine fish that are harvested from the global ocean and sold in the commercial seafood market. Here, we use high-resolution catch data for global fisheries and an empirically constrained spatial model for seafood MeHg to examine the spatial origins and magnitudes of MeHg extracted from the ocean. Results suggest that tropical and subtropical fisheries account for >70% of the MeHg extracted from the ocean because they are the major fishing grounds for large pelagic fishes and the natural biogeochemistry in this region facilitates seawater MeHg production. Compounding this issue, micronutrients (selenium and omega-3 fatty acids) are lowest in seafood harvested from warm, low-latitude regions and may be further depleted by future ocean warming. Our results imply that extensive harvests of large pelagic species by industrial fisheries, particularly in the tropics, drive global public health concerns related to MeHg exposure. We estimate that 84 to 99% of subsistence fishing entities globally likely exceed MeHg exposure thresholds based on typical rates of subsistence fish consumption. Results highlight the need for both stringent controls on global pollution and better accounting for human nutrition in fishing choices.
Human activities shape important geographic differences in fish mercury concentration levels

Abstract:Fish consumption is a major route of human exposure to mercury (Hg), yet limited understanding of how anthropogenic activities drive geographic variations in fish Hg worldwide hinders effective Hg pollution management. Here we characterized global geographic variations in total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg), compared THg and MeHg levels between the United States and China, and used a structural equation model to link the geographic variability of MeHg in fish to human activities. Despite previously reported higher Hg emissions in China, Chinese fish have lower THg and MeHg levels than fish in the United States owing to a lower trophic magnification slope, shortened food chains and shorter fish lifespans. The structural equation model revealed strong impacts of human activities on MeHg levels in fish. In the future, China may face elevated MeHg levels in fish with the ongoing recovery of food web ecology, highlighting the importance of local policies.

Abstract:The global pollutant mercury (Hg), especially as methylmercury (MeHg), threatens human and ecosystem health. But major contributors of MeHg exposure to people in China remain highly debated. We developed the China Mercury Exposure Assessment (CMEA) model, which incorporates human exposure pathways for MeHg and total Hg (THg), the interregional, including international and interprovincial, food trading as well as human physiology to provide a comprehensive system that can evaluate the pathway of Hg forms to human consumers in China. Based on the CMEA model that employed the most comprehensive and recent data, we have found that the Probable Daily Intake (PDI) of MeHg for the Chinese population was 0.057 (range: 0.036–0.091 as 60% confidence interval) μg·kg−1·day−1, while that of THg was 0.35 (range: 0.22–0.55) μg·kg−1·day−1. MeHg exposure was dominated by fish intake, especially by farm-raised freshwater fish due to higher consumption of these fish. In 2011, fish intake contributed to 56% to the total MeHg exposure, followed by rice (26%). Consumption of farm-raised fish reduced human exposure to MeHg by 33%. On the other hand, interregional food trading increased MeHg exposure of the Chinese population, as a whole, by 7.6%. The international and interprovincial food trades contributed to 5.1% and 22% of MeHg intake, respectively. For the whole China, fish intake related exposure to MeHg was highest for the Eastern and Northeastern populations, while Tibetans were chronically exposed to the highest MeHg from other sources. Our findings highlight the importance of farmed fish and food trade for MeHg exposure.
Observation-Based Mercury Export from Rivers to Coastal Oceans in East Asia

Abstract:Globally, the consumption of coastal fish is the predominant source of human exposure to methylmercury, a potent neurotoxicant that poses health risks to humans. However, the relative importance of riverine inputs and atmospheric deposition of mercury into coastal oceans remains uncertain owing to a lack of riverine mercury observations. Here, we present comprehensive seasonal observations of riverine mercury and methylmercury loads, including dissolved and particulate phases, to East Asia's coastal oceans, which supply nearly half of the world's seafood products. We found that East Asia's rivers annually exported 95 ± 29 megagrams of mercury to adjacent seas, 3-fold greater than the corresponding atmospheric deposition. Three rivers alone accounted for 71% of East Asia's riverine mercury exports, namely: Yangtze, Yellow, and Pearl rivers. We further conducted a metadata analysis to discuss the mercury burden on seawater and found that riverine export, combined with atmospheric deposition and terrestrial nutrients, quantitatively elevated the levels of total, methylated, and dissolved gaseous mercury in seawater by an order of magnitude. Our observations support that massive amounts of riverine mercury are exported to coastal oceans on a continental scale, intensifying their spread from coastal seawater to the atmosphere, marine sediments, and open oceans. Abstract:Methylmercury (MeHg) poses health risks to humans worldwide. The investigation of a longer chain of biogeochemical MeHg transport from production to consumption than that addressed in previous studies could provide additional scientific foundation for the reduction of risks. The main objective of this study is to identify the impacts of the interregional food trade along with the age, gender and socioeconomic status of people on human MeHg exposure in a developing megacity. Based on a field investigation, sampling and measurements, we provide experimental evidence regarding the substantial displacement of human MeHg exposure from production areas to consumption areas induced by the food trade. In 2018, 20% and 64% of the exposure in Beijing originated from the international and interprovincial food trade, respectively. Meanwhile, the ingestion of fish contributed 79% to the total exposure, followed by rice (4.4%), crab (3.8%) and shrimp (2.7%), and the exposure risk in urban districts was higher than that in rural areas by a factor of 2.2. A significantly higher contribution of imported deep-sea species to exposure among young people than among older people was observed (P < 0.01**), and a larger contribution of the international food trade to the MeHg exposure risk for women of childbearing age (average: 27%) than that among other groups (average: 10%) was found. Overall, our efforts demonstrate the dramatic impact of the food trade on MeHg exposure in a developing megacity, and we suggest that MeHg-susceptible populations in China should choose indigenous fish species (e.g., hairtail, yellow croaker and carp species) rather than imported deep-sea species as their dietary protein source.

Abstract:In urban and industrial regions, sedimentary mercury (Hg) serves as the crucial indicator for Hg pollution, posing potential risks to ecology and human health. The physicochemical processes of Hg in aquatic environments are influenced by various factors such as anthropogenic emissions and aquatic environmental impacts, making it challenging to quantify the drivers of total mercury (THg) variations. Here, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations, quantified driving factors, and assessed accumulation risks of sedimentary THg from the mainstream of a typical urban river (Haihe River). THg in the urban region (37−3237 ng g-1) was significantly higher ( t test, p < 0.01) than in suburban (71−2317 ng g-1) and developing regions (156−916 ng g-1). The sedimentary THg in suburban and developing regions increased from 2003 to 2018, indicating the elevated atmospheric deposition of Hg. Together with the temperature, grain size of sediments, total organic carbon (TOC), the pH and salinity of water, 40 components of parent and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were first introduced to quantify the driver of sedimentary THg based on generalized additive model. Results showed that anthropogenic emissions, including three PAHs components (31%) and TOC (63%), accounted for 94% of sedimentary THg variations. The aquatic environmental impacts accounted for 5% of sedimentary THg variations. The geo-accumulation index of THg indicated moderate to heavy accumulation in the urban region. This study demonstrates that homologous pollutants such as PAHs can be used to trace sources and variations of Hg pollution, supporting their co-regulation as international conventions regulate pollutants.
Mercury isotope compositions in seawater and marine fish revealed the sources and processes of mercury in the food web within differing marine compartments

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities and climate change have significantly increased mercury (Hg) levels in seawater. However, the processes and sources of Hg in differing marine compartments (e.g. estuary, marine continental shelf (MCS) or pelagic area) have not been well studied, which makes it difficult to understand Hg cycling in marine ecosystems. To address this issue, the total Hg (THg) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and stable Hg isotopes were determined in seawater and fish samples collected from differing marine compartments of the South China Sea (SCS). The results showed that the estuarine seawater exhibited substantially higher THg and MeHg concentrations than those in the MCS and pelagic seawater. Significantly negative δ202Hg (-1.63‰ ± 0.42‰) in estuarine seawater compared with that in pelagic seawater (-0.58‰ ± 0.08‰) may suggest watershed input and domestic sewage discharge of Hg in the estuarine compartment. The Δ199Hg value in estuarine fish (0.39‰ ± 0.35‰) was obviously lower than that in MCS (1.10‰ ± 0.54‰) and pelagic fish (1.15‰ ± 0.46‰), which showed that relatively little MeHg photodegradation occurred in the estuarine compartment. The Hg isotope binary mixing model based on Δ200Hg revealed that approximately 74% MeHg in pelagic fish is derived from atmospheric Hg(II) deposition, and over 60% MeHg in MCS fish is derived from sediments. MeHg sources for estuarine fish may be highly complex (e.g. sediment or riverine/atmospheric input) and further investigations are warranted to clarify the contribution of each source. Our study showed that Hg stable isotopes in seawater and marine fish can be used to identify the processes and sources of Hg in different marine compartments. This finding is of great relevance to the development of marine Hg food web models and the management of Hg in fish.
An integrated framework for source apportionment and spatial distribution of mercury in agricultural soil near a primary ore mining site

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a global environmental concern that affects both humans and ecosystem. The comprehensive understanding of sources and dynamics is crucial for facilitating targeted and effective control strategies. Herein, a robust approach integrating Multivariate Statistics, Geostatistics, and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was employed to quantitatively elucidate the distribution and sources of Hg in agricultural lands. Results indicated elevated Hg concentrations in the land with 74.46% of soils, including 84.85% of topsoil, 69.70% of subsoil, and 67.31% of deepsoil, exceeding risk screening value. Geoaccumulation Index of Hg in soil surpassed level II with more than 50% of Hg in the residual fraction regardless of the layer or location. The levels of Hg in surface water for irrigation exhibited a negative correlation with the distance from the mine and a positive correlation with that in sediment ( R 2 >0.78, p < 0.01 ), suggesting the downstream migration and remobilization from sediment. Source apportion revealed that human activities as primary contributors despite high variability across locations and soil layers. Contributions to downstream soil Hg from Natural Background (NB), Primary Ore Mining (OM), Agricultural Practices (AP), and Wastewater Irrigation (WI) were 15.5%, 83.1%, 1.3%, and 0.1%, respectively. A reliable approach for source apportionment of Hg in soil was suggested, demonstrating potential applicability in the risk management of Hg-contaminated sites.

Abstract:Mercury in fish is a serious human health concern. Mercury is a widespread contaminant that exceeds health effect thresholds in many fish species and waterbodies. The objectives were to determine the spatiotemporal variation of mercury in fish tissue for several fish species across thousands of lakes and to assess the potential use of fish length standardization and statistical models to improve fish consumption guidelines and impairments determinations in lake-rich areas. The results showed that fish length, species, ecoregion, lake size, latitude, color dissolved organic matter, water clarity, and zebra mussel presence influenced mercury concentrations. Fish mercury concentrations were generally higher from 1967 to 1990, and since 1990 there was no obvious trend. We found that a statistical model provided estimates of mean mercury concentrations by fish total length that were unbiased and with greater confidence than those based solely on sample statistics. The use of fish length standardization and inclusion of predictive models could improve precision and consistency of fish consumption guidelines and impairments determinations.

Abstract:<p>Neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in environments poses substantial risks to human health. Saturated sediments are basic sources of MeHg in food chains; however, distribution patterns and environmental drivers of MeHg at a global scale remain largely unexplored. Here, we characterized global patterns of MeHg distribution and environmental drivers of MeHg production based on 495 sediment samples across five typical ecosystems from the literature (1995-2018) and our own field survey. Our results showed the MeHg concentration ranged from 0.009 to 55.7 μg kg<sup>-1</sup> across the different ecosystems, and the highest MeHg concentration and Hg methylation potential were from the sediments of paddy and marine environments, respectively. Further, using combined analysis of random forest and structural equation modeling, we identified temperature and precipitation as important regulators of MeHg production after accounting for the well-known drivers including Hg availability and sediment geochemistry. More importantly, we found increased MeHg production in sediments with elevated mean annual Hg precipitation, and warmer temperature could also accelerate MeHg production by facilitating activities of microbial methylators. Together, this work advances our understanding of global MeHg distribution in sediments and environmental drivers, which are fundamental to the prediction and management of MeHg production and its potential health risk globally.</p>

Abstract:Mercury is a highly toxic element present in water, soil, air, and biota. Anthropogenic activities, such as burning fossil fuels, mining, and deforestation, contribute to the presence and mobilization of mercury between environmental compartments. Although current research on mercury pathways has advanced our understanding of the risks associated with human exposure, limited information exists for remote areas with high diversity of fauna, flora, and indigenous communities. This study aims to deepen our understanding of the presence of total mercury in water, sediments, and fish, within aquatic ecosystems of two indigenous territories: Gomataon (Waorani Nationality) and Sinangoé (Ai ́Cofán Nationality) in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our findings indicate that, for most fish (91.5%), sediment (100%) and water (95.3%) samples, mercury levels fall under international limits. For fish, no significant differences in mercury levels were detected between the two communities. However, eight species exceeded recommended global limits, and one surpassed the threshold according to Ecuadorian legislation. Piscivore and omnivore fish exhibited the highest concentrations of total mercury among trophic guilds. Only one water sample from each community's territory exceeded these limits. Total mercury in sediments exhibited greater concentrations in Gomataon than Sinangoé. Greater levels of mercury in sediments were associated with the occurrence of total organic carbon. Considering that members of the communities consume the analyzed fish, an interdisciplinary approach, including isotopic analysis, methylmercury sampling in humans, and mercury monitoring over time, is imperative for a detailed risk assessment of mercury exposure in Amazonian communities.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities have been releasing mercury for centuries, and despite global efforts to control emissions, concentrations in environmental media remain high. Coastal sediments can be a long-term repository for mercury, but also a secondary source, and competing processes in marine ecosystems can lead to the conversion of mercury into the toxic and bioaccumulative species methylmercury, which threatens ecosystem and human health. We investigate the fate and transport of three mercury species in a coastal lagoon affected by historical pollution using a novel high-resolution finite element model that integrates mercury biogeochemistry, sediment dynamics and hydrodynamics. The model resolves mercury dynamics in the seawater and the seabed taking into account partitioning, transport driven by water and sediment, and photochemical and microbial transformations. We simulated three years (early 2000s, 2019, and 2020) to assess the spatio-temporal distribution of mercury species concentrations and performed a sensitivity analysis to account for uncertainties. The modeled mercury species concentrations show high temporal and spatial variability, with water concentrations in some areas of the lagoon exceeding those of the open Mediterranean Sea by two orders of magnitude, consistent with available observations from the early 2000s. The results support conclusions about the importance of different processes in shaping the environmental gradients of mercury species. Due to the past accumulation of mercury in the lagoon sediments, inorganic mercury in the water is closely related to the resuspension of contaminated sediments, which is significantly reduced by the presence of benthic vegetation. The gradients of methylmercury depend on the combination of several factors, of which sediment resuspension and mercury methylation are the most relevant. The results add insights into mercury dynamics at coastal sites characterized by a combination of past pollution (i.e. sediment enrichment) and erosive processes, and suggest possible nature-based mitigation strategies such as the preservation of the integrity of benthic vegetation and morphology.

Abstract:Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish. While reducing mercury emissions and releases aims to protect human health, it is unclear how this affects methylmercury concentrations in seawater and marine biota. We compiled existing and newly acquired mercury concentrations in tropical tunas from the global ocean to explore multidecadal mercury variability between 1971 and 2022. We show the strong inter-annual variability of tuna mercury concentrations at the global scale, after correcting for bioaccumulation effects. We found increasing mercury concentrations in skipjack in the late 1990s in the northwestern Pacific, likely resulting from concomitant increasing Asian mercury emissions. Elsewhere, stable long-term trends of tuna mercury concentrations contrast with an overall decline in global anthropogenic mercury emissions and deposition since the 1970s. Modeling suggests that this limited response observed in tunas likely reflects the inertia of surface ocean mercury with respect to declining emissions, as it is supplied by legacy mercury that accumulated in the subsurface ocean over centuries. To achieve measurable declines in mercury concentrations in highly consumed pelagic fish in the near future, aggressive emission reductions and long-term and continuous mercury monitoring in marine biota are needed.

Abstract:The global-scale impacts of mercury discharged from Artisanal Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) on soils have been poorly studied, unlike atmospheric emissions. This is a key point to understand the potential exposure to mercury pollution of ecosystems and populations living in the river basins where ASGM is practiced, since the largest fraction of the pollutant is poured into soil, independently of the amalgamation technique employed. ASGM activities emit into the atmosphere mercury in its elemental form, which reacts very slowly with the major oxidants. Therefore, the exact location of the ASGM sites has a limited impact on the atmospheric mercury fate. Conversely, this cannot be applied to the mercury discharged on top of the soil. Two ASGM inventories and the related distributions available in the literature along with two novel distributions based on the intersection of zones characterized by low population density and rural areas were compared using a newly introduced Vulnerability Index. The results from this comparison showed that a precise distribution of ASGM is crucial to effectively evaluate the fate of mercury, and therefore the resulting effects on the local ecosystems.

Abstract:Small-scale fisheries (SSFs) are important sources of livelihood but are vulnerable to anthropogenic environmental changes, including heavy metal pollution, such as mercury (Hg). Fish-Hg contamination has well-known health effects, but restricting fish consumption is potentially challenging in places where fish is the main source of income and protein. In this study, metrics from socio-ecological interaction networks extracted from interviews with fishers were applied to identify the main species harvested (consumed or sold) and commercialized by SSF communities. To evaluate the potential impacts of restricting the harvest of contaminated fish, interaction networks containing all the fish caught by the communities were compared with networks excluding species with potentially high mercury levels, according to the literature. The interaction networks were based on information provided by 395 fishers from 26 communities in the Tapajós River, Amazon Basin, and 454 fishers from 38 communities in the coastal bay of Ilha Grande and Paraty. The SSF communities used (interacted with) a total of 38 and 70 fish species in the freshwater and coastal environments, respectively, showing some specialization and dependence on these resources. The networks indicated that, if fishers were not to harvest some of the preferred fish due to mercury contamination, fishing pressure on other target species may increase, whereas food provision and income opportunities would be reduced, especially in the freshwater environment. This often-overlooked socioeconomic effect of mercury contamination can negatively affect both the fishers' livelihoods and the sustainability of these fisheries.

Mediterranean Marine Mammals: Possible Future Trends and Threats Due to Mercury Contamination and Interaction with Other Environmental Stressors

Abstract:Despite decreasing anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions in Europe and the banning and restriction of many persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention, Mediterranean marine mammals still have one of the highest body burdens of persistent pollutants in the world. Moreover, the Mediterranean basin is one of the most sensitive to climate change, with likely changes in the biogeochemical cycle and bioavailability of Hg, primary productivity, and the length and composition of pelagic food webs. The availability of food resources for marine mammals is also affected by widespread overfishing and the increasing number of alien species colonizing the basin. After reporting the most recent findings on the biogeochemical cycle of Hg in the Mediterranean Sea and the physico-chemical and bio-ecological factors determining its exceptional bioaccumulation in odontocetes, this review discusses possible future changes in the bioavailability of the metal. Recent ocean-atmosphere-land models predict that in mid-latitude seas, water warming (which in the Mediterranean is 20% faster than the global average) is likely to decrease the solubility of Hg and favor the escape of the metal to the atmosphere. However, the basin has been affected for thousands of years by natural and anthropogenic inputs of metals and climate change with sea level rise (3.6 ± 0.3 mm year-1 in the last two decades), and the frequency of extreme weather events will likely remobilize a large amount of legacy Hg from soils, riverine, and coastal sediments. Moreover, possible changes in pelagic food webs and food availability could determine dietary shifts and lower growth rates in Mediterranean cetaceans, increasing their Hg body burden. Although, in adulthood, many marine mammals have evolved the ability to detoxify monomethylmercury (MMHg) and store the metal in the liver and other organs as insoluble HgSe crystals, in Mediterranean populations more exposed to the metal, this process can deplete the biological pool of Se, increasing their susceptibility to infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders. Mediterranean mammals are also among the most exposed in the world to legacy POPs, micro- and nanoplastics, and contaminants of emerging interest. Concomitant exposure to these synthetic chemicals may pose a much more serious threat than the Se depletion. Unfortunately, as shown by the literature data summarized in this review, the most exposed populations are those living in the NW basin, the main feeding and reproductive area for most Mediterranean cetaceans, declared a sanctuary for their protection since 2002. Thus, while emphasizing the adoption of all available approaches to mitigate anthropogenic pressure with fishing and maritime traffic, it is recommended to direct future research efforts towards the assessment of possible biological effects, at the individual and population levels, of chronic and simultaneous exposure to Hg, legacy POPs, contaminants of emerging interest, and microplastics.
Global health impact of atmospheric mercury emissions from artisanal and small-scale gold mining

Abstract:Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the leading source of mercury (Hg), a global neurotoxin. Past research has focused on the health impacts on miners and nearby residents; here, we estimate the risk for global general populations by employing a comprehensive atmosphere-land-ocean-ecosystem and exposure-risk-valuation model framework. Our results suggest that ASGM sources contribute 12%, 10%, and 0.63% to the atmospheric Hg deposition, plankton methylmercury concentrations, and soil total Hg concentrations at present day, respectively, and cause 5.8×105 points of intelligence quotient decrements and 1,430 deaths for global general populations per year. The monetized global health impact of ASGM ($154 billion) is 1.5 times its local impact and accounts for half of the total revenue of ASGM ($319 billion). A major spatial decoupling between the health impact and economic gains is also revealed, suggesting that intervention measures such as awareness-raising, capacity-building, and technology transfer funded by the Global North are cost-effective.
Impact of Dissolved Organic Matter and Environmental Factors on Methylmercury Concentrations Across Aquatic Ecosystems Inferred from a Global Dataset.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) input into ecosystems is estimated to have increased by twofold to fivefold since the industrial revolution. In aquatic ecosystems, methylmercury (MeHg) receives the most attentions of all the Hg species due to its neurotoxicity and strong bioaccumulation capacity in food chain. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is crucial in impacting aquatic Hg transformation. However, only few spatially constrained studies have attempted to quantify the relative importance of DOM and other factors (e.g., Hg availability, temperature, pH, and land-use type) on MeHg concentration. In this study, we collected data of 585 water samples at 373 sites globally, including lakes, rivers, estuaries, and wetlands, and characterized the global pattern of MeHg distribution and environmental drivers of aquatic MeHg concentration. Our results showed that MeHg concentrations ranged from detection limits to 11 (geometric mean 0.11 and average 0.29) ng/L, and the highest MeHg concentration and Hg methylation potential were observed in wetlands. A positive relationship was observed between MeHg fraction in the total mercury (THg) and DOM for all the aquatic ecosystems. Using the structural equation modeling, we found that Hg availability was a dominant factor in impacting water MeHg concentration followed by DOM. According to 129 samples of specific DOM source information, we found that the percentage of THg as MeHg (%MeHg) in water dominated by the autochthonous DOM was higher than that dominated by the allochthonous DOM. Our results could advance understanding of aquatic Hg cycling and their environmental drivers, which are fundamental for predicting and mitigating MeHg productions and its potential health risks for humans.

Abstract:The environmental cycling of mercury (Hg) can be affected by natural and anthropogenic perturbations. Of particular concern is how these disruptions increase mobilization of Hg from sites and alter the formation of monomethylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative form of Hg for humans and wildlife. The scientific community has made significant advances in recent years in understanding the processes contributing to the risk of MeHg in the environment. The objective of this paper is to synthesize the scientific understanding of how Hg cycling in the aquatic environment is influenced by landscape perturbations at the local scale, perturbations that include watershed loadings, deforestation, reservoir and wetland creation, rice production, urbanization, mining and industrial point source pollution, and remediation. We focus on the major challenges associated with each type of alteration, as well as management opportunities that could lessen both MeHg levels in biota and exposure to humans. For example, our understanding of approximate response times to changes in Hg inputs from various sources or landscape alterations could lead to policies that prioritize the avoidance of certain activities in the most vulnerable systems and sequestration of Hg in deep soil and sediment pools. The remediation of Hg pollution from historical mining and other industries is shifting towards in situ technologies that could be less disruptive and less costly than conventional approaches. Contemporary artisanal gold mining has well-documented impacts with respect to Hg; however, significant social and political challenges remain in implementing effective policies to minimize Hg use. Much remains to be learned as we strive towards the meaningful application of our understanding for stakeholders, including communities living near Hg-polluted sites, environmental policy makers, and scientists and engineers tasked with developing watershed management solutions. Site-specific assessments of MeHg exposure risk will require new methods to predict the impacts of anthropogenic perturbations and an understanding of the complexity of Hg cycling at the local scale.

[The effect of focused ultrasound on the physicochemical properties of Sarcoma 180 cell membrane].

Abstract:This study was amied to detect the changes in the cell membrane of Sarcoma 180 (S180) cells induced by focused ultrasound and to probe the underlying mechanism. The viability of tumor cells was examined at various intensities and different treatment times by ultrasound at the frequency of 2.2MHz. Flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy were used to detect the loading of fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FD500) which signifies the change of membrane permeability. The results showed that after the cells were treated by ultrasound, especially when irradiated for 60s, the number of fluorescent cell, which represented the transient change of membrane permeabilization with cell survival, increased significantly. Then the damage of cell membrane was evaluated by the measurement of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release which became more severe as the radiation time was increasing. The generation of lipid peroxidation was estimated using the Thibabituric Acid (TBA) method after irradiation. The results reveal that the instant cell damage effects induced by ultrasound may be related to the improved membrane lipid peroxidation levels post-treatment. The physicochemical properties of S180 cell membrane were changed by focused ultrasound. The findings also imply an exposure time-dependent pattern and suggest that the lipid peroxidation produced by acoustic cavitation may play important roles in these actions.
