Abstract:Karstified aquifers respond rapidly to hydrological events, such as heavy rain storms or draughts. Our ability to predict the response of the aquifer after such events strongly depends on i) temporal and spatial resolution of the available monitoring data and ii) suitable modelling approaches to assess recharge at the respective level of detail. The study catchment, the Western Aquifer Basin (WAB), is Israel&#180;s most important source for freshwater supply. The recharge area of the WAB has an area of 1,812 km2. Recharge is characterized by high spatial variability in topography and a high variability in precipitation and temperature, land use, and vegetation. Precipitation also shows a seasonal variability: while annual precipitation mainly occurs during the winter months accompanied by floods in the otherwise dry wadis (October to March, ca. 90 %), summer periods (April to September) are hot and dry, and precipitation decreases to nearly zero.We employ SWAT to simulate the large-scale hydrological water balance (evapotranspiration, recharge, run-off) in the recharge area of the WAB on a daily and monthly temporal resolution. The SWAT model uses a SRTM DEM from NASA, soil maps from FAO, soil properties of the Harmonized World Soil Database, and land use maps from the ESA CCI project covering the time period from 1992 to 2015. These datasets are merged in SWAT into 361 Hydrologic Response Units with unique characteristics in soil, land use, and slope, respectively. The calibration of soil water balance model with SWAT-CUP employs monthly actual evapotranspiration and daily surface runoff data. Run-off was measured in hydrometric stations between 2004 &#8211; 2015. Evapotranspiration with a spatial resolution of 500 m x 500 m is obtained from the MODIS satellite mission and covers a period between 2001 and 2013 with individual time steps of 8 days. Calculated long-term groundwater recharge is compared with spring discharge measured during the period 1990 &#8211; 2013. Climate projections have been obtained with the RCM COSMO-CLM at resolution of 8km, under the IPCC RCP4.5 scenario, nested into the MENA-CORDEX domain.The calibrated water balance model allows for scenario analysis for predicted shifts in climate until 2050 to address the impact of climate change on groundwater recharge. In addition to an increase in temperature, fewer but more extreme rainfall events are to be expected. Furthermore, the effect of future land use changes, such as expansion of farm land or urban areas, on recharge depth are analyzed. Finally, simulated high-resolution recharge provides an updated estimate for the currently developed groundwater flow model of the aquifer system. SWAT provides daily recharge for the equivalent porous medium model of the WAB, simulated by MODFLOW. One of our challenges is the calculation of recharge in the hilly region i) characterized by steep slopes and ii) vadose zones of several 100 meters of thickness. Our investigations are expected to provide information on the impact of shifts in climate and global changes on recharge processes and to illustrate the effect of short-term hydrologic events on water resources in large carbonate aquifers under Mediterranean climate.

Abstract:Understanding the soil and hydrologic processes in agricultural watersheds are vital for reliable assessments of water quantity and quality to support integrated river basin management. However, deriving hydrology-relevant information is complicated in flat data-scarce agricultural watersheds due to constraints in watershed delineation, flat topography, poor natural drainage, and irregular irrigation schedules by human intervention. The study aimed to improve the applicability of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to simulate daily flow and NO3 concentrations in a flat data-scarce agricultural watershed in the Lower Seyhan Plain (LSP) in Turkey. Refined digitized stream networks, discharge data derived from fully equipped gauging stations, and satellite data (Landsat 7 ETM+, Aster GDEM, etc.) had to be integrated into the modeling process to improve the simulation quality. The model was calibrated using a 2-year (2011–2012) dataset of streamflow and NO3 using the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting (SUFI-2) approach and validated from 2013 to 2018. Daily water yields were predicted with a reasonable simulation accuracy (E values ranging from 0.53 to 0.82 and percent bias (PBIAS) from 0 to +4.1). The results proved that integrating redefined stream networks to SWAT within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment increases the simulation capability of flow and nitrate dynamics efficiently. Automated delineation of these networks and sub-basins at low topographic transitions limits the SWAT accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract. SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) is a continuous time, semi-distributed river basin model that has been widely used to evaluate the effects of alternative management decisions on water resources. This study, demonstrates the application of SWAT model for streamflow simulation in an experimental basin with daily and hourly rainfall observations to investigate the influence of rainfall resolution on model performance. The model was calibrated for 2018 and validated for 2019 using the SUFI-2 algorithm in the SWAT-CUP program. Daily surface runoff was estimated using the Curve Number method and hourly surface runoff was estimated using the Green and Ampt Mein Larson method. A sensitivity analysis conducted in this study showed that the parameters related to groundwater flow were more sensitive for daily time intervals and channel routing parameters were more influential for hourly time intervals. Model performance statistics and graphical techniques indicated that the daily model performed better than the sub-daily model. The Curve Number method produced higher discharge peaks than the Green and Ampt Mein Larson method and estimated better the observed values. Overall, the general agreement between observations and simulations in both models suggests that the SWAT model appears to be a reliable tool to predict discharge over long periods of time.
Modified SWAT to Forecast Water Availability in Mediterranean Mountainous Watersheds with Snowmelt Dominated Runoff

Abstract:The assessment of the hydrological response to projected changes in climatic variables is imperative for water resources management, especially in watersheds where snowmelt represents a significant source of runoff. In this study, we modify the source code of the snow accumulation and melting algorithm of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to improve runoff simulations in snow dominated basins. A sinusoidal snowmelt function under the degree-day factor method was adopted with its parameters calibrated based on historical data. River flow simulations were compared to measured data under the modified and unmodified SWAT models. Model differences in future predictions of river flows (2032- RCP 4.5) were also assessed. The results showed that the modifications improved runoff simulations by better capturing flow dynamics as represented by daily flows and corresponding variability during the snowmelt period. The modified model increased the Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (from 0.64 to 0.79; 0.60 to 0.80; 0.70 to 0.75) and the coefficient of determination (from 48 to 67%, 48 to 69%, 58 to 70%) at three gauging stations. While both models predicted a decrease of water availability in the basin, future simulations with the modified snowmelt algorithm predicted that the drop in water availability as compared to baseline year (2008) will be less dramatic (24%) compared to predictions from the unmodified SWAT (31%). We argue that the proposed source code modifications to the snowmelt algorithm of SWAT provide better insights about future water availability in snow-dominated watersheds.

Abstract:The use of models affords an understanding of hydrological processes under different environmental conditions, and aids action planning in the face of changes in land use, soil, and climate. Arid and semi-arid regions are the most vulnerable to climate change. To this effect, the SWAT model has been used in different locations around the world and in various applications. This work analysed recent studies published between 2009 and 2022, to understand the following: (1) how the SWAT model has been applied in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, (2) the criteria used in applying the model, and (3) what alternatives can be used to overcome the limitation of input data and improve SWAT performance in dry environments? A systematic search was conducted based on scientific articles. A total of 234 articles were identified where SWAT was used drylands. The largest and the smallest applications were implemented in Asia and Oceania respectively, in such segments as agriculture, water governance, environmental conservation, hydrological processes, and extreme events. The number of years of data used for calibration and validation was generally low (<20 years), with a median of 9 for calibration and 6 years for validation. The NSE (92%) was the most applied in analysing modelling efficiency, followed by the R 2 (78%) and PBIAS (51%). The lack of observational data in the drylands is still a major challenge for studies que involving hydrologic modelling, and to improve the hydrological responses, researchers use strategies such as the use of data measured in the field, remote sensing, and even application of other models with or inside the SWAT.
Improved simulation of river water and groundwater exchange in an alluvial plain using the SWAT model

Abstract:Hydrological interaction between surface and subsurface water systems has a significant impact on water quality, ecosystems and biogeochemistry cycling of both systems. Distributed models have been developed to simulate this function, but they require detailed spatial inputs and extensive computation time. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model is a semi-distributed model that has been successfully applied around the world. However, it has not been able to simulate the two-way exchanges between surface water and groundwater. In this study, the SWAT-landscape unit (LU) model - based on a catena method that routes flow across three LUs (the divide, the hillslope and the valley) - was modified and applied in the floodplain of the Garonne River. The modified model was called SWAT-LUD. Darcy's equation was applied to simulate groundwater flow. The algorithm for surface water-level simulation during flooding periods was modified, and the influence of flooding on groundwater levels was added to the model. Chloride was chosen as a conservative tracer to test simulated water exchanges. The simulated water exchange quantity from SWAT-LUD was compared with the output of a two-dimensional distributed model, surface-subsurface water exchange model. The results showed that simulated groundwater levels in the LU adjoining the river matched the observed data very well. Additionally, SWAT-LUD model was able to reflect the actual water exchange between the river and the aquifer. It showed that river water discharge has a significant influence on the surface-groundwater exchanges. The main water flow direction in the river/groundwater interface was from groundwater to river; water that flowed in this direction accounted for 65% of the total exchanged water volume. The water mixing occurs mainly during high hydraulic periods. Flooded water was important for the surface-subsurface water exchange process; it accounted for 69% of total water that flowed from the river to the aquifer. The new module also provides the option of simulating pollution transfer occurring at the river/groundwater interface at the catchment scale. Copyright (C) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Hydrological models are frequently used for water resources management. One of the most widely used is the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). However, one weakness of SWAT is its simplicity in modeling groundwater, which might affect the representation of hydrological processes. Therefore, modeling strategies that are geared towards achieving more realistic simulations would increase the reliability and credibility of SWAT model predictions. In this study, the performance of a SWAT model in a geologically heterogeneous basin was optimized by incorporating geological properties through semi-automatic calibration strategies. Based on its geology, the basin was split into four regions, and a default calibration (Scheme I) was compared with three designed calibration schemes: a zonal calibration (Scheme II), obtaining a parameter set in each of the regions, a zonal calibration after introducing an impervious layer in an aquifuge region (Scheme III), and a final calibration scheme (Scheme IV) where an aquifer region was re-calibrated, changing a parameter controlling the required content of water in the aquifer for return flow to increase groundwater flow. The results from the four schemes were evaluated both statistically and by assessing their plausibility to determine which one resulted in the best model performance and the most realistic simulations. All schemes resulted in a satisfactory statistical model performance, but the sequential optimization in the final scheme realistically reproduced the heterogenous hydrological behavior of the geological regions within the basin. To the best of our knowledge, our work addresses this issue for the first time, providing new insights about how to simulate catchments including aquifuge substrates.

Assessing Climate Change Impact on Water Resources in Water Demand Scenarios Using SWAT-MODFLOW-WEAP

Abstract:In this article, we present the use of the coupled land surface model and groundwater flow model SWAT-MODFLOW with the decision support tool WEAP (Water Evaluation and Planning software) to predict future surface-water abstraction scenarios in a complex river basin under conditions of climate change. The modelling framework is applied to the Dee River catchment in Wales, United Kingdom. Regarding hydrology, the coupled model improves overall water balance and low-streamflow conditions compared with a stand-alone SWAT model. The calibrated SWAT-MODFLOW is employed with high-resolution climate model data from the UKCP18 project with the future scenario of RCP85 from 2020 to 2040. Then, water supply results from SWAT-MODFLOW are fed into WEAP as input for the river reach in the downstream region of the river basin. This system is utilized to create various future scenarios of the surface-water abstraction of public water supply in the downstream region—maximum licensed withdraw, 50% authorized abstractions, monthly time series with 1% increases in water use, and maximum water withdraw per year based on historical records repeated every year with 1% increases in water use—to estimate the unmet demands and streamflow requirement. This modelling approach can be used in other river basins to manage scenarios of supply and demand.
Using an improved SWAT model to simulate karst sinkholes: A case study in Southwest China

Abstract:Hydrological simulation of the karst area is significant for assessing water resources accurately and exploring the relationship in the hydrologic cycle. However, the existence of sinkholes causes the spatial heterogeneity of aquifers and changes the distribution of surface water as well as groundwater, which makes the traditional hydrogeological model difficult to quantitatively characterize the hydrological processes of the sinkhole. Hence, improving the hydrological model for the karst area is a necessary direction at present. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) is one of the most widely used semi-distributed hydrological models right now in the world. In this study, we focused on the upper course of the South Panjiang River and used the pond module of the SWAT model to simulate karst sinkholes, modifying the source code to realize the rapid response to the recharge in karst sinkholes. After the improvement, the surface runoff, especially the peak value of the Xiqiao Hydrological Station at the outlet, has been reduced, while the baseflow of modified subbasins has been increased and the water yield is under a state of water balance. In addition, the model evaluation factor R 2 was strengthened from 0.76 to 0.83 and NSE was strengthened from 0.66 to 0.79 of the Xiqiao Hydrological Station during the validation period. The improved model was used to analyze the spatial distribution of hydrological components. Also, it was found there are spatial relations between runoff modulus–slope and baseflow–surface runoff–land use types. The analysis demonstrated that the improved SWAT model could effectively change the hydrological components and simulate the rapid replenishment of karst sinkholes.

Abstract:Today, hydrological models are important tools for successfully managing water resources and understanding the hydrologic response of watersheds, especially in arid regions with limited water resources. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of the Soil Water Assessment Tools model (SWAT) for predicting the hydrological regime of El Chique Dam watershed, in a semi-arid region of the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. The model was calibrated and validated on a daily and a monthly scale using the sequential uncertainty fitting algorithm (SUFI-2) within the Calibration and Uncertainty Program SWAT-CUP. The performance of the SWAT model was evaluated by means of four statistical measures: the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE), the determination coefficient (R 2 ), the Percentage of Bias (PBIAS) and the mean square error (RSR). The results showed a better performance of the model in the simulation on a monthly scale, obtaining values of NSE, R 2 , PBIAS and RSR of 0.78, 0.79, -14.00 and 0.47 during the calibration period, and 0.60, 0.61, -18.70 and 0.63 during the validation period, respectively. The most sensitive parameters that affect the behavior of runoff in the watershed are: ALPHA_BF, CH_K2, CN2, SOL_BD and OV_N. The overall hydrological water balance analysis showed that more than 90% of precipitation is lost by evapotranspiration, while 8.6% of precipitation contributed to streamflow. Thus, the SWAT model can predict runoff on a monthly scale very well and therefore, these results are expected to assist in parameter selection for calibration processes in other semi-arid regions, as well as in decision-making related to water resource management and planning in the watershed under study.

Assessment of Groundwater Recharge in Agro-Urban Watersheds Using Integrated SWAT-MODFLOW Model

Abstract:Numerical models are employed widely to evaluate the hydrological components of a watershed but, traditionally, watershed models simplify either surface or subsurface flow module. In this setup, as a bridge between groundwater and surface water regimes, aquifer recharge is the most affected segment of the water balance. Since the watershed processes are increasingly changed, the need for a comprehensive model with detailed conceptualizing capacity of both groundwater and surface water flow systems is growing. This work focuses on the spatiotemporal groundwater recharge assessment in gauged and ungauged agro-urban watersheds in South Korea using the updated SWAT-MODFLOW model, which integrates the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT2012) and Newton–Raphson formulation for Modular Finite Difference Groundwater Flow (MODFLOW-NWT) in a single executable code. Before coupling, the setup, calibration, and verification of each model were performed separately. After integration, irrigation pumps and drain cells mapping to SWAT auto-irrigation and subbasins were initiated. Automatic calibration techniques were used for SWAT and MODFLOW-NWT models, but a manual calibration was used for the integrated model. A physical similarity approach was applied to transfer parameters to the ungauged watershed. Statistical model performance indicators revealed that the low streamflow estimation was improved in SWAT-MODFLOW. The spatiotemporal aquifer recharge distribution from both the stream seepage and precipitation showed a substantial change, and most of the aquifer recharge occurs in July–September. The areal annual average recharge reaches about 18% of the precipitation. Low-lying areas receive higher recharge consistently throughout a year. Overall, SWAT-MODFLOW exhibited reasonable versatility in evaluating watershed processes and produced valuable results with reasonable accuracy. The results can be an important input for policymakers in the development of sustainable groundwater protection and abstraction strategies for the region.

Abstract:Groundwater resources are vital for human development, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions with limited water availability. This study examines the evolution of aquifer vulnerability in the Miranda basin by addressing the critical interaction between land use and water quality amidst increasing pressures on water resources, with a focus on the impact of historical land use changes and agricultural practices on groundwater quality in the Campo de Cartagena aquifer, which drains into the degraded Mar Menor coastal lagoon in southern Spain. To evaluate aquifer vulnerability, this research employs the DRASTIC vulnerability assessment method, which is based on seven hydrogeological parameters. This theoretical framework allows for a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between land use changes, water management, and aquifer health, which deepens the understanding of the factors driving vulnerability over time. A key component of the methodology is the use of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to estimate aquifer recharge and generate reliable maps that depict this essential parameter. The study reveals significant results through an extensive analysis of vulnerability changes over the past 70 years, which shows that high vulnerability areas have increased from 11%, prior to the Tagus-Segura water transfer in 1979, to 53% today. In contrast, low and moderate vulnerability areas have decreased by 15% and 28%, respectively. This shift is primarily attributed to intensified agricultural practices, which lead to enhanced aquifer recharge and elevated piezometric levels, which increase contamination risks, as demonstrated by the severe eutrophication observed in the Mar Menor. Moreover, the accuracy of the vulnerability maps is validated by comparing them with observed nitrate concentrations in groundwater, which reveals a strong correlation (R2 = 0.86). The methodology provides essential insights for policymakers and supports the implementation of land use restrictions to mitigate groundwater contamination risks. The findings ultimately underscore the necessity for integrated water management strategies that balance agricultural productivity with ecological sustainability in water-scarce environments.

Abstract:Highly conductive topsoils in neotropical high-elevation grassland-dominated ecosystems, or so-called paramos in the Andean region, influence the local rainfall-runoff processes predominated by saturation-excess overland flow as the primary source of freshwater. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model has shown limitations when applied to mountainous catchments with highly conductive soils that generate surface runoff as saturation-excess overland flow. In this study, we enhanced SWAT to simulate runoff as saturation-excess overland flow and examined the hydrological responses of an intensively monitored paramo catchment in Ecuador. The model setup considered a detailed representation of the hydro-physical properties of the soils at different depths, including high infiltration and lateral flow rates in the hillslopes and restricted groundwater interactions, a characteristic of the páramo catchments. SWAT reasonably reproduced the daily discharge during dry and wet periods and the cumulative occurrence of high and low flows. The performance metrics NSE, RSR, and PBIAS values during calibration/validation period were 0.86/0.84, 0.31/0.4, and −11.2/-7.58, respectively. The runoff ratio and partitioning of the total runoff into the lateral flow and surface runoff were physically meaningful. More significantly, SWAT was able to simulate saturation-excess overland flow, which is dominant compared to infiltration excess, and it is a distinctive characteristic of páramo catchments. Nevertheless, the model showed limitations in simulating low flows.

Development of Strategy for SWAT Hydrologic Modeling in Data-Scarce Regions of Peru

Abstract:In this study, methods were developed to create and evaluate the performance of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in southern Peru where commonly used input data sources were not available. Soil classes were defined based on regional soil taxonomy and suitability maps combined with soil profiles. Local land cover and remotely sensed satellite data were used to develop a land cover database. Water balance analysis of the reservoir as well as satellite evapotranspiration data were used for model performance assessment. Results showed that these strategies provided reliable predictions of hydrology in this region, with the uncertainty quantified based on the range of inputs. Overall, this semiarid watershed was base flow driven and average annual surface runoff contribution to streamflow was less than 9%. Assessment of water pathways and their uncertainties based on the uncertainty of estimated inputs also showed that 62% of precipitation was removed by evapotranspiration with up to 16% uncertainty. The methods introduced in this study can be applied to other data-scarce watersheds, and findings provide insights on the hydrology of the Peruvian Andes region.
Comparative evaluation of daily streamflow prediction by ANN and SWAT models in two karst watersheds in central south Texas

Abstract:This work compares the accuracy of streamflow estimated by a data-driven artificial neural network (ANN) and the physically based soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). The models were applied in two small watersheds, one highly urbanized and the other primarily covered with evergreen forest and shrubs, in the San Antonio Region of central south Texas, where karst geologic features are prevalent. Both models predicted daily streamflow in the urbanized watershed very well, with the ANN and SWAT having the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency (NSE) values of 0.76 and 0.72 in the validation period, respectively. However, both models predicted streamflow poorly in the nonurban watershed. The NSE values of the ANNs significantly improved when a time series autoregressive model structure using historical streamflow data was implemented in the nonurban watershed. The SWAT model only achieved trivial performance improvement after using the SWAT-CUP SUFI-2 calibration procedure. This result suggests that an ANN model may be more suitable for short-term streamflow forecasting in watersheds heavily affected by karst features where the complex processes of rapid groundwater recharge and discharge strongly influence surface water flow.

Abstract:This research aimed to appraise the performance of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model in sediment flow simulation and also to investigate the uncertainty of the model in the watershed areas of arid and semi-arid regions. In this survey, we used the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting ver.2 (SUFI-2) algorithm to assess the uncertainty and calibrate the model. Different factors of water resources are simulated, and we consider the crop yield and water quality at the Hydrological Response Units (HRU) level. Besides, to quantify the water resources, we implemented monthly time intervals. Also, we used monthly time intervals to quantify the water resources. The results showed that in a 3-year validation period (2007–2010), the P-factor and the r-factor were 0.28 and 0.38 respectively, while in the 7-year calibration period (2000–2006), these two factors were 0.29 and 0.39, respectively. The findings of this study proved that in the validation period, statistical indicators of model evaluation comprise R2, bR2, and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) coefficients were 0.85, 0.23, and 0.47, respectively, while in the calibration period, these coefficients were 0.46, 0.14, and 0.37, respectively. The results of uncertainty and calibration analysis were acceptable, but in the validation phase, the model has been more applicable and useful. These results show the acceptable efficiency of the SWAT model in simulating the sediment load of the study area. To assess the sensitivities of 22 input parameters, we used SWAT Calibration Uncertainties Program (SWAT-CUP) and achieved three of the most sensitive parameters comprising CN2, SOL_BD, and USLE_P. In contrast, the parameters with the least sensitivity were SLSUBBSN, GW_DELAY, and ESCO. We can use the calibrated model as inputs for SWAT, to assess the impact of climate change on soil erosion.
Simulation of water balance equation components using SWAT model in Samalqan Watershed (Iran)

Abstract:The disparate temporal and local distribution of freshwater and the rapid growth of the population in recent decades have led to problems in providing water resources for various applications. Hence, the supply of water in many countries such as Iran has become one of the most important challenges of the present century. Modern mathematical models have been developed for studying the complex hydrological processes of a watershed. The application of conceptual hydrological models is an important issue in watersheds for researchers, especially in arid and semiarid regions. The hydrological behaviors are complicated in such watersheds, and their calibration is more difficult. In this research, the conceptual and semidistributed SWAT model is used for Samalqan watershed, Iran, with 1148 km2 area. Streamflow simulation is considered for 13 years. Samalqan watershed modeling led to 22 subbasins and 413 hydrologic response units. Water balance components have been computed, the results have been calibrated with the SUfI2 approach in the SWAT-CUP program, and finally, the performance of the model is evaluated The sensitivity analysis was conducted using 26 SWAT parameters. The most sensitive parameters were CN2 (moisture condition II curve number), GWQMN (threshold water level in shallow aquifer for base flow), GW_Delay (delay time for aquifer recharge), GW_REVAP (Revap coefficient), and ESCO (Soil evaporation compensation coefficient). The model was calibrated from 2004 to 2012 and validated from 2012 to 2014. The coefficient of determination (R2) and Nash and Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), On monthly basis, were between 0.60–0.80 and 0.80–0.95 respectively, for calibration, and 0.70–0.90 and 0.70–0.80, respectively, for validation periods, which indicates that the model results are satisfactory. Results show that the SWAT model can be used efficiently in semiarid regions to support water management policies and development of sustainable water management strategies. Due to the arid and semiarid climate of Iran and water resources constraints, the need for modeling is clear. It can be concluded that determination of the existing water potential is necessary for water planning and management of water resources in the watershed.

Abstract:The present study analyzed sensitivity of flow parameters using SWAT and effect of climate change on surface water resources, considering uncertainty with Monte Carlo. For this purpose, output of nine-model related to fifth-climate change-report during baseline period 1971–2000 was weighted. Using Monte Carlo, 100 samples of probabilistic distribution of basin temperature and rainfall were generated. LARS-WG model was used for downscaling, then temperature and precipitation were calculated under RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 for future periods 2040–2069 and 2070–2099. SWAT was calibrated using observational-data and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) (NCEP CFSR) global climate datasets and sensitivity of parameters affecting flow was analyzed. Results showed that observed-data had better performance than NCEP CFSR. Finally, future runoff was calculated under RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 for 2040–2069 and 2070–2099. Results showed that average annual runoff decreased by 84, 80, 82 and 80%, for 2040–2069 (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) and for 2070–2099 (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) relative to baseline, respectively.

Abstract:Being a laborious approach, manual calibration of hydrologic model in a semi-arid context requires in-depth knowledge of the watershed and as much as possible field input data to obtain reliable simulations. In this study, manual calibration and relative sensitivity analysis approaches of the SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) were applied for water balance in a 1993 km2 watershed (on the R’dom river) located in North-western Morocco. The watershed is located in a semi-arid area dominated by agro-forestry activities. The objectives of this study were (i) to perform a local sensitivity analysis of the SWAT model taking into consideration the watershed characteristics and (ii) to implement a detailed methodology of manual calibration and validation of the model in a semi-arid context. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out on 12 different SWAT input parameters, and has revealed that 4 input parameters only were the most influential ones on flow components of the R’dom watershed. Model manual calibration was conducted along 2006 and 2007 by comparing measured and predicted monthly and daily discharges and taking Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE), determination coefficient (R2), and percent bias (PBIAS) as goodness-of-fit indicators. Validation has been performed by the same approach through 2008 and 2009 period. All final NSE values were above 0.5, R2 values exceeded 0.7, and PBIAS lower than 25% demonstrating satisfactory model performances over the study watershed conditions. The SWAT model set-up with measured input data, manually calibrated and validated, reflects well the real hydrologic processes occurring in the R’dom watershed and can be used to assess current and future conditions and to evaluate alternative management practices.

Abstract:Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a widely used model for runoff, non-point source pollution, and other complex hydrological processes under changing environments (groundwater flow, evapotranspiration, snow melting, etc.). This paper reviews the key characteristics and applications of SWAT. Since its inception in the 1990s, there has been a significant increase in the number of articles related to the SWAT model. In the last 10 years, the number of articles almost reached 4000. The range of applications varies between small and large scales; however, large watershed modelling dominates in North America and Asia. Moreover, the prevailing modelling is related to hydrological impacts in a changing environment, which is a global problem. The significant shortcoming of the SWAT model is the vast quantity of data necessary to run the model to generate accurate and reliable results, which is not accessible in some regions of the world. Apart from its accessibility, it has several advantages, including continuous development, which results in a slew of new interfaces and tools supporting the model. Additionally, it can simulate human activity and agricultural measures and adapt to new circumstances and situations. This article emphasizes weaknesses and strengths of SWAT model application on modelling of hydrological processes in changing climate and environment.
