Abstract:Abstract As part of the modern generation of medical students and prospective future doctors of the United Kingdom’s Nation Health Service (NHS), we have grown up in an age where smartphones and instant messaging applications (IMAs) are ubiquitous across all aspects of society. With IMAs being so familiar, we recognise their scope for facilitating our learning of the pre-registration syllabus and how their practical nature could potentially revolutionise healthcare worldwide. It is, therefore, rational to further investigate the benefits of incorporating such technology into these respective settings. In this article, we will further expand on some of the advantages highlighted by E. Colman & E. O’Connor that IMAs, particularly WhatsApp, have in the academic environment which resonate with us. We illustrate our views on IMAs being incorporated into health systems globally through exemplifying the NHS, using reviewed literature.

Abstract:Background: The global use of mobile devices with their connectivity capacity, and integrated with the affordances of social media networks, provides a resource-rich platform for innovative student-directed learning experiences.Objective: The objective of this study was to review the experiences of undergraduate nurses on the improvement of primary health care education at a School of Nursing at a University in the Western Cape, South Africa, through the incorporation of a social media application, WhatsApp.Method: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design was used to explore and describe data collected from a purposive sample of 21 undergraduate nursing students. The study population was engaged in a WhatsApp discussion group to enhance their integration of theory and clinical practice of the health assessment competency of the Primary Health Care Module. Participants submitted electronic reflections on their experiences in the WhatsApp discussion group via email on completion of the study. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data collected was done according to Tesch’s (1990) steps of descriptive data analysis in order to identify the major themes in the study. The electronic reflections were analysed to explore their rich, reflective data.Results: Seven themes were identified that included: positive experiences using the WhatsApp group; the usefulness of WhatsApp for integrating theory and clinical practice; the availability of resources for test preparation; opportunity for clarification; anonymity; exclusion of students as a result of the lack of an appropriate device, and the application caused the battery of the device to run flat quickly.Conclusion: The results of the experiences of students in the WhatsApp discussion group could be used to inform the use of social media applications in teaching and learning, with the purpose of enhancing the integration of the theory and clinical practice.
Effectiveness of Whatsapp as a Teaching Learning Tool for Problem Based Learning in Pharmacology: A Quasi-experimental Study

Abstract:Introduction: Instant Messaging Applications (IMAs) like Whatsapp has changed our lives including medical education in many ways. Aim: To explore and compare the effectiveness and acceptability of Whatsapp as a Teaching Learning (TL) tool for Small Group Learning (SGL) sessions when compared with traditional classroom based learning SGL sessions, for a specific topic (pharmacokinetics) in Pharmacology in Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in a tertiary care government medical college in Eastern India on second phase Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students in the year 2021 over a period of five weeks (from March to April 2021). After Didactic Lecture (DL) on the topic, the willing students were randomly divided into two groups, group A (n=46) and group B (n=45). Then group A and group B students attended classroom based and Whatsapp based SGL sessions, respectively, for a period of five consecutive days on "Pharmacokinetics" using PBL method. Students appeared for a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) based examination (predecided and prevalidated) of 30 marks before and after the SGL sessions. Next, group A students attended Whatsapp based PBL session on the same topic in the same manner as group B and vice-versa. Finally the students filled in a feedback form using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: The post-test scores for both the groups were significantly better compared to the pretest scores; however, there were no significant differences in the post-test scores of both the groups. Regarding students’ feedback on the type of SGL, except for enjoyment (p-value=0.0345) and interactiveness (p-value=0.022), there were no significant differences between the two group scores. The students significantly preferred combination of both types of SGL to either of them (p-value=0.001). Conclusion: In this study, Whatsapp based SGL showed comparable effectiveness as classroom based SGL as measured in terms of MCQ based examination scores. Except for interactiveness and interest, classroom based SGL was equally acceptable to the students as Whatsapp based SGL. Interestingly, the students preferred a combination of both the type of SGL to either of them on the particular topic of Pharmacology.
The role of WhatsApp® in medical education; a scoping review and instructional design model

Abstract:BackgroundTechnological advances have driven huge change in educational practices though concerns exist about a lack of evidence informing this change, in particular with social media-based medical education activities. The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review of WhatsApp use in medical education, narratively describing how it has been used and evaluated, and the theoretical considerations in relevant articles.MethodsA modified 5-stage scoping review model was used. We performed 2 searches from February 2009 to February 2019 in EBSCO, SCOPUS, Web of Science, EMBASE, Medline PubMed and Google Scholar) using the term "WhatsApp" in all search fields. A 3-stage process for study selection was performed. Only original articles in English presenting original data about WhatsApp in medical education were included. The Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation was used to describe learning outcomes in included studies.ResultsTwenty-three articles were selected for review. Three strategies for WhatsApp use were apparent; primarily educational use with a pre-defined curriculum (n = 5), primarily educational use without a curriculum (n = 11), and primarily non-educational use (n = 7). Most of the educational studies used an online moderator and were in a local hospital or university department. Studies not primarily educational were national or international and seldom included an online moderator. All 5 studies with a pre-defined curriculum reported Kirkpatrick level 2 learner knowledge outcomes. A majority of the remaining studies only reported Kirkpatrick level 1 learner attitudes. Seven studies with 647 participants reported an improvement in learners' knowledge following WhatsApp learning, though methodological weaknesses were apparent. Evidence for underlying learning theory considerations were scant throughout the studies.ConclusionsWhatsApp is popular and convenient in medical education. Current published literature suggests it may also be effective as a medical learning tool. By combining the 3 strategies for WhatsApp use and the exploration-enactment-assessment integrated learning design framework, we propose an instant messenger design model for medical education. This may address the need for theory-driven instructional design in social media learning. Further research would clarify the role of WhatsApp and our design model in this area.

Abstract:Background: Innovation and interaction are two key components which drives successful impartation of any education. Interaction should be increased ‘with students’ and ‘between students’ whenever possible to help develop critical thinking skills and concept clearing. Social media is very active in form of Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp and all these platforms have been used to enhance student learning, peer interaction and communication. Objective: Since this field was yet to be explored IN OUR SETTING, the present study was planned to introduce asynchronous learning via social media using WhatsApp as a teaching-learning tool. Method: The present observational study was conducted with second professional undergraduate medical students. Due permission from the institute ethics committee was taken for conducting the study. Students and faculty sensitization was done regarding use of WhatsApp as a teaching-learning tool. The topic to be taught was chosen and a module was prepared for the same. After the implementation of module, student feedback and faculty feedback was taken via a pre-framed peer validated questionnaire. Results: Students and faculty both accepted and found the method innovative, interesting, stimulating and fun. The platform was found to be effective in clarification of concepts related to subject, self-directed learning and in promoting better teacher student interaction. Faculty agreed that it is a feasible method of teaching but students had mixed views regarding its implementation as a routine method of teaching. Logistically, students felt better time management needed to be there to implement such online teaching modules for better learning and participation. Conclusion: Healthcare is a challenging profession and students should be ready to adapt to all the newer technologies coming up whether in education sector, social or professional.
Comparison of WhatsApp® and Face-to-Face case based learning in undergraduate dental students: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Objective: The study compares two different interfaces of CBL (WhatsApp® and Face-to-Face) in undergraduate dental students and examines WhatsApp's effectiveness as a teaching tool. Methods: A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) was conducted from May 2023 to October 2023 at Ayub College of Dentistry, Orthodontic Department, Abbottabad, involving 30 participants randomly assigned to control (Face-to-Face) Group-1 and experimental (WhatsApp®) Group-2. The six-week study utilized pre-validated questionnaires and Multiple-Choice Questions assessments, comparing post-test scores. Assessment of the intervention involved evaluating Kirkpatrick levels one and two, with responses being rated using a five-point Likert scale. Statistical analysis employed Students' t-tests for group comparisons and paired t-tests for MCQ results before and after the intervention for each group. A p-value less than 0.05 indicated statistical significance, with SPSS version 23 used for analysis. Results: The study involved 30 participants with a mean age of 23.23±0.67 years, encompassing both males (53.3%) and females (46.7%). All survey participants (100%) used WhatsApp, highlighting its popularity. Everyone had internet access, with 73.3% using smartphones and 26.7% using laptops for mobile internet. Post-intervention, both control and experimental groups exhibited improved post-test scores (p 0.50). Over 50% of students expressed satisfaction with WhatsApp as a teaching tool, resulting in a learning gain of 36.18%. Abstract:Background: E-learning platform can be utilized to improve pre-clinical practical skills. Millions undergraduates are active users of WhatsApp platform and this can be used for learning and evaluation. Objectives: The study's goals and include using WhatsApp to reinforce pre-clinical wire bending exercises among undergraduate dental students and assessing the effectiveness and acceptability of this platform among them. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted over a nine-month period and included 79 final-year BDS students from Mansarovar Dental College in Bhopal. The research was divided into three three-month sessions. An examination of similar questions of 10 MCQ and 10 Likert questions was conducted at the beginning and end of each session. A WhatsApp group called "Let's Learn Wire Bending" was formed, and digital images of wire bending exercises with step-by-step instructions and clinical benefits were posted. WhatsApp discussions about each appliance were held for three months, and at the end of the third month, an offline examination was held using the first question paper set, and student progress was evaluated. Statistical analysis: Shapiro-Wilk’s test was applied for evaluating normality of samples distribution, and in non-parametric data obtained from the Likert’s score was converted into mid-point data analysis, and comparison between groups. Mann-Whitney U test was applied to assess acceptability. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between before-session test results and after-session test results with a p-value less than 0.001. Likert feedback questionnaire revealed that students enjoyed this method of teaching. Conclusions: The present study concluded that teaching pre-clinical wire bending exercises through WhatsApp application reinforces the traditional method of pre-clinical demonstration.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The technological advancements have transformed the society into a global forum influencing the educational processes and learning environments. Medical education is no exemption with an increasing trend to use the social media and smart phones for teaching and learning. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube and Edmodo are the platforms promoting collaborative learning, improved communication and knowledge sharing.AIM: This study aims to review the use of smart phones and social media in the context of medical education. It reviews the usage of smart phone and social medical applications including Facebook, WhatsApp and Edmodo for teaching and learning in medical education.RESULTS: The use of personal smartphones for teaching and learning among medical community is highly prevalent and increasing day by day. Medical students use the mobile application for online textbooks (70%), medical podcasts (60%), medical calculator (75%), online lecture (50%) and notes taking (45%). Relevant studies conclude that the majority of students use smart phones for education (62.7%), communication (81.7%) and recreation (82.5%). Social media has a great potential in educational setting and provide students a chance to involve, share and express knowledge and information with each other. Facebook, WhatsApp and Edmodo are the commonly used applications having multiple benefits like collaboration, feedback and engagement but negative aspects including addiction, distraction and maintenance of privacy have also been found.CONCLUSION: The review article concludes that social media is a powerful instrument for social interactions and is also used as a tool for teaching and learning. The integration of social media with traditional class teaching in medical education has clear advantages but there is a debate about the probable disadvantages as well.

Abstract:Since this world is progressing and the new generation is increasingly adopting mobile phones in their everyday lives, thus, WhatsApp media and other mobile applications are increasingly being used at educational institutions all around the world. Therefore, the current study investigated the WhatsApp SMS application’s use in the vocabulary learning in the engineering university, Sindh, Pakistan. The study used a mixed-mode quasi-experimental pre-test post-test research design, in which students' vocabulary ability was assessed before they participated in WhatsApp classes and subsequently through post-test after the experiment. Moreover, students' experiences were also documented through the analysis of SMS messages they posted on a WhatsApp group (during experiment). The quantitative data was analysed on SPSS and the findings of the study revealed that WhatsApp’s SMS application usage posited a significant difference in the enhancement of vocabulary of the experimental group of students. Moreover, students’ postings (SMSs) on WhatsApp group were analysed qualitatively following the thematic analysis. The qualitative analysis also revealed positive experiences of students concerning WhatsApp’s SMS application in learning vocabulary. The current study reveals the benefits of WhatsApp’s SMS application on tertiary students worldwide, as well as instructors, syllabus designers who develop courses for tertiary students, and policymakers who make educational policies, by instilling technology-enabled social media tools (specifically WhatsApp) in the ESL classroom context both nationally and internationally.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce a library website model. Further, the paper discusses a designer’s checklist and an evaluative instrument that were constructed based on the proposed model. Design/methodology/approach – The model was developed through a Delphi study that was participated by two panels of experts. The researcher communicated with the panel members via e-mail using two Delphi instruments designed out of two item pools that were developed based on the knowledge gained from surveying the literature, visiting the selected libraries and exploring the library websites. Then, a designer’s checklist and an evaluative instrument were derived from the proposed model through a series of brainstorming sessions. Findings – The proposed model consisted of altogether 140 items (60 web content elements and 80 web design features). How WhatsApp is transforming health communication among frontline health workers: a mixed-method study among midwives in India

Abstract:Background: Limited literature exists in India on WhatsApp use for health communication among frontline health workers like Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM). We conducted this study to assess the adoption of WhatsApp among ANMs and identify factors influencing its adoption. In addition, the study explored the perceptions of ANMs on WhatsApp use for sharing health information. Methods: We employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory design. We surveyed 259 ANMs, followed by in-depth interviews with 19 purposively sampled ANMs. We conducted multinomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with WhatsApp adoption and employed thematic analysis to analyze interviews. Results: 257 ANMs responded to the survey questionnaire, of which 18.3%, 48.2%, and 33.5% had low, mid, and high levels of WhatsApp adoption, respectively. Education (AOR = 2.87 [95% CI = 1.20-6.85]), motivation (AOR = 6.31 [95% CI = 1.43-27.80]), and technical awareness (AOR = 2.91 [95% CI = 1.11-7.62]) were significantly associated with WhatsApp adoption. Thematic analysis of the interviews resulted in six themes describing perceptions and experiences of ANMs on WhatsApp use. They are: (i) a way of instant communication, (ii) provision for multimedia messaging, (iii) a quick fix tool for queries and concerns, (iv) make attendance and reporting easy (v) a way of reaching higher officials, and (vi) a cost-saving mechanism. Conclusion: WhatsApp facilitated ANMs' communication and service delivery at the grassroots level. Measures to improve motivation, technical awareness, and digital education will likely improve WhatsApp adoption among health workers.
Exploring the Use of WhatsApp for Teaching Speaking to English Language Learners: A Case Study

Abstract:Being able to speak or communicate orally is an ultimate goal for most English language learners. Thus, teaching speaking is a main component of the curriculum in most communicative-based English language classrooms. However, teachers struggle to teach speaking in English language classrooms. Two main reasons contribute to this struggle: insufficient time for speaking practice in language classrooms and students’ unwillingness to communicate due to anxiety. Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (ACMC) may have the potential to provide a solution to this difficulty. A widely accessible mobile application that can provide an easily implemented ACMC tool is WhatsApp. The current case study explored the potential use of WhatsApp for teaching English speaking in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. 15 Saudi EFL learners of English were recruited to participate in the present study. A mixed-method approach comprising pre and post-tests, closed-ended questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for the current study. The findings showed that using WhatsApp can have the potential for improving EFL learners’ speaking performance, increasing their motivation and attitude towards speaking, and decreasing their anxiety and fear of making mistakes when speaking. WhatsApp can provide an effective platform for teaching speaking in an EFL setting where there is a scarcity of time available for oral communication.
Perceived Usefulness of Smartphone Medical Apps As Theoretical and Clinical Learning Aids Among Medical Students in Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background Smartphone applications have become popular tools in clinical educational environments, particularly because they enhance learning in any setting through their accessibility. Despite students utilizing these apps in their daily learning, Pakistan's medical education system has yet to strongly endorse them. Given the rising usage of medical applications among clinical year medical students and the wide range of apps accessible on contemporary devices aimed specifically at the student population, there is a lack of literature addressing the use of these apps on clinical learning in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Pakistan. Objectives Our study aims to (1) assess the level of awareness among clinical-year medical students in Pakistan, of smartphone applications for academic purposes, (2) determine the usefulness of medical apps as educational tools for clinical-year medical students, in terms of enhancing overall patient-care skills and (3) identify barriers to the usage of apps among students who do not have them installed. Methods This online questionnaire-based study includes clinical year medical students across four medical colleges (two private and two public sectors) in Pakistan. Participant identity was kept anonymous and informed consent was required to participate. A sample size of 360 was used based on previous studies in the UK and student estimates from chosen medical colleges. The questionnaire tool used consists of three sections; demographics and medical school information, perceived usefulness of medical smartphone apps on a Likert Scale and barriers to usage among students who do not have them installed. Results 97.9% of the total study population chose to participate in the study. There was roughly an equal percentage of responses from each clinical year and 72% of students reported active use of medical apps of which the vast majority (48%) have one to two apps on their phones. Only 39% of students felt that their medical colleges encourage the use of smartphone apps for academic purposes. 54% of students use apps to look up medical criteria for disease processes and almost 42% use them to search medications. On a Likert scale of 1-5, improvement of clinical performance received highest average score among users (3.92, SD 1.1), followed by quick access to medical guidelines (3.83, SD 1.0). The most common reasons for nonuse of medical apps were medical colleges not offering subscriptions and not knowing how to utilize apps. Conclusion Smartphone apps are widely used by clinical year medical students for academic purposes in our study. Despite lack of endorsement from their respective medical colleges, these apps are still popularly utilized for revision and research on disease criteria during clinics and rounds. Encouragement from the university has been identified as a significant barrier, however. Students who use smartphone apps reported an improvement in clinical performance overall; they were able to retrieve information quicker during rounds and noticed enhancements in formulating diagnoses and reading radiological images. In contrast, those not using these apps faced challenges with interpreting imaging results, recalling pharmacological properties of medications and developing differential diagnoses. Through these findings, we highlight the benefits of incorporating technological media into the undergraduate curriculum and hope medical universities from Pakistan can take inspiration.

Prevalence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Children with Bloody Diarrhea Referring to Abuzar Teaching Hospital, Ahvaz, Iran.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Escherichia coli O157: H7 are recognized as important aetiological agents of diarrhea in children, particularly in developed countries. AIM The aim of the study was to determine the rates of detection of E. coli O157: H7strains among children in Ahvaz, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS From June 2010 to December 2010, 137 diarrheal stool samples of children were collected. E.coli was identified by standard microbiological techniques. O157 or O157:H7 subtypes discerned by serological tests. RESULTS Of the 137 E. coli isolates, enteropathogens were found in 53 (38.7%) of the patients as follow: Shigella spp. (75.5%), EPEC (enteropathogenic E. coli) (16.9%), Campylobacter spp. (3.8%) and Salmonella spp. (3.8%). None of the isolated E. coli was O157:H7 serotype. CONCLUSION This shows that non-O157:H7 E. coli are the major cause of paediatric infections in this region of Iran.
Unraveling the Impacts of Whatsapp Messaging on Interpersonal Communication Dynamics: A Study of University Students

Abstract:This quantitative study investigates the influence of WhatsApp usage on interpersonal communication skills and interpersonal relationships among university students. Utilizing a self-administered questionnaire, 202 valid responses were collected to explore the correlation between WhatsApp use and these two variables. Our findings indicate a significant association between the frequency of WhatsApp usage and interpersonal communication skills and interpersonal relationships among the participating university students. This research contributes valuable insights into the contemporary dynamics of communication technology and its impact on the social fabric within educational settings. This can empower students to navigate the digital communication landscape with awareness and skill. Future research should adopt an interdisciplinary approach to study the cultural and psychological aspects of WhatsApp usage.
The Effect of Using Whatsapp on EFL Students' Medical English Vocabulary Learning During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract:The role of social networking mobile applications such as WhatsApp in enhancing second language vocabulary learning among English language learners continues to be a subject of interest for many scholars. The current study aimed at examining medical English vocabulary learning among undergraduate students using WhatsApp compared to learning vocabulary via Blackboard platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. To this end, 108 medical students (51 males, 57 females) enrolled in a first semester English for a specific English course participated in the study. A quasi-experimental design was adopted for two groups. Fifty-three students were assigned to the WhatsApp group and 55 students were assigned to the Blackboard group. Data were collected using pretest-posttest design. Results of t-test scores revealed no significant difference between the WhatsApp and Blackboard groups on a vocabulary test. Results of survey that gauged students' perception of the use of WhatsApp as a platform for learning new vocabulary showed positive perceptions since participants thought that WhatsApp enhanced their learning experience.
Comparing the effect of LINE-based and WhatsApp-based educational interventions on reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among Triad adolescents: A quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Background: Adolescent populations face reproductive health challenges. Persisting gaps in Triad Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) comprehension and risky behaviors emphasize the necessity of integrating social media apps into health education to address Triad ARH risks among youths. Teenagers commonly use WhatsApp and LINE for social media communication, and determining the effectiveness of these two apps is scarce. Objective: This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate and compare the impacts of educational interventions delivered through WhatsApp and LINE platforms on enhancing the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents concerning the Triad ARH. Methods: A total of 154 senior high school students were randomly recruited from two public schools in Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. These students were divided into two groups: Group A, consisting of 78 students who received material messages using LINE, and Group B, consisting of 76 students who received material messages using WhatsApp. Participants completed a pre-test prior to the intervention and a post-test one month after the intervention. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using Chi-square and Wilcoxon tests. Results: In the LINE group, there was an average increase in knowledge from 15.68 to 20.21, attitudes from 29.05 to 59.12, and behavior from 55.95 to 64.81 before and after the intervention period (p = 0.001). In the WhatsApp group, there was an increase in knowledge from 15.16 to 19.67, in attitudes from 34.71 to 59.54, and behavior from 54.75 to 65.97 before and after the intervention period (p = 0.001). Further analysis showed no significant difference between the LINE and WhatsApp groups in increasing the average level of knowledge (p = 0.973), attitude (p = 0.682), and behavior (p = 0.067) before and after the intervention. However, it was observed that the increase in knowledge and attitude was slightly higher in the LINE group, while the increase in behavior was slightly higher in the WhatsApp group. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that educational interventions using LINE and WhatsApp both increased the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents related to the Triad ARH. This finding is valuable, considering the popularity of LINE and WhatsApp as mobile applications. Leveraging these platforms by nurses and other healthcare professionals can significantly improve adolescents’ health, influencing their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding reproductive health.

Abstract:WhatsApp is one of the most practical, cost-effective, and communicative mobile applications for college students to enhance their speaking skills. This study reconciled to consuetude college students to flexible habitual use of the English language learning and intended to improve their speaking abilities with specially tailored learning resources and activities aid known as WhatsApp-based speaking instructional material (WABSIM). This exploratory mixed-methods research evaluated oral chat-based utilization of WhatsApp by twenty-eight students for one semester using audio voice messages and video recordings of communicative activities in pairs or groups, dialogues, and interviews activities recorded in the WhatsApp group managed to produce every day classroom and noncollegiate activities. Speaking test consisted of an oral evaluation of student's fluency, vocabulary used, grammar, pronunciation, and comprehensibility aspects. It reveals that students demonstrated a stupendous developing speaking interest in building English sentences by raising questions and delivering responses, improved learning collaboration, created better learning engagement, increased learning self-awareness, and accelerated flexible communication. Besides, students achieved substantial academic progress astoundingly in a semester. Therefore, to emerge the significance acknowledged from this current study, in the current era of mobile technology advancement supporting teaching and learning English, WhatsApp oral chat-based assistance offering teaching and learning English flexibility is the most effective.
Mobile data security: instant messaging in orthopaedics

Abstract:Background: Instant messaging via WhatsApp is used within hospital teams. Group messaging can lead to efficient and non-hierarchical communication. Despite being end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, raising concerns regarding data security. The aims of this study were: (1) to record the prevalence of WhatsApp group instant messaging amongst clinical teams; (2) to ascertain clinician attitudes towards use of instant messaging and (3) to gauge clinicians' awareness of best practice regarding mobile data protection. Methods: Over a two-week period in May 2018, clinical nurse specialists in the Auckland District Health Board Orthopaedic department retrospectively collected data from all five team WhatsApp group message threads recording quantity of messages sent and the nature of the messages. Concurrently individuals in these WhatsApp groups completed an anonymous survey of their use of WhatsApp and their awareness of local data security policies and practice. Results: One thousand three hundred and sixty messages were sent via WhatsApp in a two-week period. 384 (28%) of the messages contained patient identifiable data. Thirty-six photos were shared. Participants rated use of WhatsApp at 9.1/10 - extremely beneficial. Sixty-five percent of clinicians reported they had not read or were unaware of the ADHB policies regarding mobile devices and information privacy and security. Conclusion: WhatsApp use is widespread within the Orthopaedic department and is the preferred platform of communication with many perceived benefits. Data security is a risk and implementation of appropriate guidelines to assist clinicians in achieving best practice is crucial to ensure patient data remains protected.
