Abstract:The true principal factors for the diurnal water-demand pattern of urban water are often difficult to identify using traditional rough-set algorithms because the demand pattern is usually affected by many factors that are uncertain and hard to quantify. An improved attribute-reduction algorithm based on the cumulative weighting coefficient was proposed to solve this problem. The weighting coefficient was determined by the result of the variable precision rough-set algorithm. To discuss the consecutive curves with mathematical tools, an improved fuzzy c-mean (FCM) algorithm was proposed to discretize the diurnal water-demand pattern spatially. The proposed algorithms were then used to analyze the principal factors of the diurnal water-demand pattern in the city of Hangzhou, China. The results show that the improved attribute-reduction algorithm is capable of distinguishing the false attribute from the dynamic reduction sets, and the fuzzy c-mean algorithm is an effective and feasible method of solving the cluster problem for the consecutive curves. The principal factors affecting the diurnal water-demand pattern in Hangzhou are maximum air temperature, minimum air temperature, and weekday or weekend. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)WR.1943-5452.0000223. Chaotic Phenomenon and the Maximum Predictable Time Scale of Observation Series of Urban Hourly Water Consumption

Abstract:The chaotic characteristics and maximum predictable time scale of the observation series of hourly water consumption in Hangzhou were investigated using the advanced algorithm presented here is based on the conventional Wolf’s algorithm for the largest Lyapunov exponent. For comparison, the largest Lyapunov exponents of water consumption series with one-hour and 24-hour intervals were calculated respectively. The results indicated that chaotic characteristics obviously exist in the hourly water consumption system; and that observation series with 24-hour interval have longer maximum predictable scale than hourly series. These findings could have significant practical application for better prediction of urban hourly water consumption.
Detecting urban water consumption patterns: a time-series clustering approach

Abstract:Abstract The need for efficient management of water distribution systems is a growing concern for economic, environmental and social reasons. Water supply systems are commonly designed to ensure adequate behaviour under the worst conditions, such as maximum consumption, which leads to overestimation in supply tanks and energy waste. While overestimation should be considered, to account for unpredictable demands and emergency scenarios, we advocate that a detailed understanding of consumption patterns enables an improvement in water management and is additionally beneficial to correlated resources such as electricity. A novel framework to detect water consumption patterns is developed and applied to an urban scenario. Observed discrepancies among computed patterns enable readjustments of supplied water flowrate, thus promoting effective water allocation and pumping costs, while mitigating water contamination risks.

Urban residential water usage in response to climate variability in China

Abstract:Abstract While it has been shown that climate change poses a significant threat to China’s supply of freshwater resources, it is unclear if household water consumption – the fastest growing source of water demand in China – would also be affected. To fill this knowledge gap, we use a novel dataset from over 40,000 Chinese households, spanning nine years and ten provinces to examine the relationship between daily household water usage and climate variability. We find that water usage have an increasing marginal relationship with daily temperature. Heterogeneity analyses along dimensions of background environmental conditions and socioeconomic groups reveal that household are likely to substitute between water and electricity to cope with high heat. By systematically aggregating the dataset to different temporal scales, we also find evidence of changing behaviors where over time, households are using increasingly more water to cope with high-temperature days. In all, after feeding our results into climate projection models, it is estimated that household water usage will increase by around 4%-29% under RCP8.5. Our findings are especially relevant for water-scarce countries such as China as well as developing countries where water is a cheaper and more accessible resource to cope with heat.
Principal Factor Analysis Method for Daily Urban Water Consumption Based on Rough Set Theory

Abstract:It is difficult to find the true principal factors for daily urban water consumption based on the conventional rough set algorithm because there are usually different results of attribute reduction for time series with different lengths or the same length with different samples in the same information system.To solve this problem,an advanced algorithm based on weighting-coefficient cumulative estimation is put forward,and the weighting coefficient is the result of variable precision rough set algorithm.Principal factors for daily water consumption in Hangzhou were analyzed using the new algorithm.Results show that the proposed algorithm for attribute reduction is helpful for distinguishing the fake attribute from dyanamic reduction sets,and the principal factors affecting daily urban water consumption of Hangzhou city are the maximum air temperature,the relative humidity,the index of weather and the index of weekday.
Urban Household Water Usage in Adaptation to Climate Change: Evidence from China

Abstract:While it has been concluded that climate change poses a significant threat to worldwide supply of freshwater resources, it is unclear if and how demand for water would also be affected. To fill this knowledge gap, we leverage on ‘big data’ collected using smart water meters from over 40,000 Chinese urban households, spanning nine years and ten provinces to examine the relationship between daily household water usage and climate variability. At the baseline, we find that municipal water is not only a coping mechanism for heat, but its usage is accelerated during heatwave events. Heterogeneity analyses reveal that households from lower-valued properties are more likely to substitute water for electricity to counter heat. Importantly, we find evidence of adaptation behaviors where over time, households are using increasingly more water to cope with high-temperature days. In all, after feeding our results into climate projection models, it is estimated that household water usage will increase by around 7–44% in the long-term (2080–2099) under emissions scenarios of SSP245 and SSP370. Our findings are especially relevant for water-scarce countries such as China as well as developing countries where water is a cheaper and more accessible resource to cope with heat.

Abstract:Water and energy consumptions in the residential sector are highly correlated. A better understanding of the correlation would help save both water and energy, for example, through technological innovations, management and policies. Recently, there is an increasing need for a higher spatiotemporal resolution in the analysis and modelling of water-energy demand, as the results would be more useful for policy analysis and infrastructure planning in both water and energy systems. In response, this paper developed an agent-based spatiotemporal integrated approach to simulate the water-energy consumption of each household or person agent in second throughout a whole day, considering the influences of out-of-home activities (e.g., work and shopping) on in-home activities (e.g., bathing, cooking and cleaning). The integrated approach was tested in the capital of China, Beijing. The temporal results suggested that the 24-hour distributions of water and related energy consumptions were quite similar, and the water-energy consumptions were highly correlated (with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.89); The spatial results suggested that people living in the central districts and the central areas of the outer districts tended to consume more water and related energy, and also the water-energy correlation varies across space. Such spatially and temporally explicit results are expected to be useful for policy making (e.g., time-of-use tariffs) and infrastructure planning and optimization in both water and energy sectors.

Abstract:The city is a typical natural and social dual water circulation area. The water use characteristics of the city have obvious dual attributes, and there are many factors (both on nature and social side) affecting the urban water consumption (UWC). This article aimed to research the structure and characteristics of the UWC. Taking the provincial capital cities of China as the research objects, 24 index factors and data of the year 2015 were selected to construct a multivariate regression model between urban UWC and index factors. The results showed that the combination of correlation analysis and full subset regression could effectively screen the prediction variables of UWC. Principal component analysis could effectively reduce variable dimensions of UWC while preserving raw dataset information as much as possible. The main factors affecting UWC on the social side include the built-up area, the urban population, road cleaning area, residential electricity consumption, and per capital water consumption, and the main factors of the natural side include per capital green land and precipitation.
Short-term prediction of chaotic hourly water consumption based on united time series

Abstract:Aiming at the high short-term prediction accuracy of hourly water consumption in water supply optimal operation, a united time series method was proposed based on horizontal period clustering and vertical residual modification. The horizontal time series were determined as research samples by pattern recognition with high relevancy. After the phase space of horizontal period clustering was restructured, chaotic characteristics of typical period data were analyzed and chaotic prediction model was established. Least square support vector machine was used as a forecasting tool to obtain period flows. Furthermore, to track water consumptions dynamically, vertical residuals were modified by grey model prediction after collecting real-time data. The period historical data from Xiaoshan were supplied in the normal and abnormal case study to forecast the day-ahead hourly water consumption, and prediction accuracy with different methods were compared. Test results show that the method is adept in the short-term forecasting this kind of chaotic time series, which reflects the characters of typical days and real-time water variations. And the new method outperforms other methods obviously, thus it can better satisfy the demands for optimal operation of water distribution system.
Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity Analysis of Water Conservation in Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei Urban Agglomeration Based on the Geodetector and Spatial Elastic Coefficient Trajectory Models

Abstract:To regulate regional water resources, it is essential to identify the relationships among the elements that influence water conservation. Taking the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration as the study area, the authors applied a new method in combination with a geodetector model and spatial elastic coefficient trajectory model to reveal factors controlling water conservation and to identify relationships among the elements driving water conservation, in which the water conservation capacity and its spatial distribution were achieved using an Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs model. The authors selected precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, temperature, land use, maximum burial depth of soil, plant-available water content, soil-saturated hydraulic conductivity, percentage slope, gross domestic product, and population as the spatial driving factors, which measured the influence on the distribution of water conservation capacity on the whole region, plateaus, mountains, and plains, respectively. On the basis of previous research results, the authors selected precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and land use as time-driven factors. The results indicated that the strong water conservation capacity was reflected primarily in the Yanshan and Taihang Mountains and the eastern coastal areas. The water conservation capacity of the entire region, mountains, plateaus, and plains was affected mainly by the soil-saturated hydraulic conductivity, plant-available water content, precipitation, and precipitation, respectively. Each driving factor exhibited a clearly interactive influence on the spatial distribution of water conservation in terms of space and time.

Abstract:Urban areas such as megacities (those with populations greater than 10 million) are hotspots of global water use and thus face intense water management challenges. Urban areas are influenced by local interactions between human and natural systems and interact with distant systems through flows of water, food, energy, people, information, and capital. However, analyses of water sustainability and the management of water flows in urban areas are often fragmented. There is a strong need to apply integrated frameworks to systematically analyze urban water dynamics and factors that influence these dynamics. We apply the framework of telecoupling (socioeconomic and environmental interactions over distances) to analyze urban water issues, using Beijing as a demonstration megacity. Beijing exemplifies the global water sustainability challenge for urban settings. Like many other cities, Beijing has experienced drastic reductions in quantity and quality of both surface water and groundwater over the past several decades; it relies on the import of real and virtual water from sending systems to meet its demand for clean water, and releases polluted water to other systems (spillover systems). The integrative framework we present demonstrates the importance of considering socioeconomic and environmental interactions across telecoupled human and natural systems, which include not only Beijing (the water-receiving system) but also water-sending systems and spillover systems. This framework helps integrate important components of local and distant human-nature interactions and incorporates a wide range of local couplings and telecouplings that affect water dynamics, which in turn generate significant socioeconomic and environmental consequences, including feedback effects. The application of the framework to Beijing reveals many research gaps and management needs. We also provide a foundation to apply the telecoupling framework to better understand and manage water sustainability in other cities around the world.
Identification of Urban Drinking Water Supply Patterns Across 627 Cities in China Based on Supervised and Unsupervised Statistical Learning.

Abstract:Urbanization, one of the predominant trends of the 21st century, places great stress on urban water supply networks. This paper aimed to identify the most important variables driving urban water supply patterns in China, a region which has seen rapid urban growth in the last few decades. In addition, a principal component analysis-informed urban water sustainability index was developed in order to benchmark cities. The research involved applying statistical learning and other analytical methods to 12 years of urban water supply data for 627 cities across China. The findings were as follows: (1) PCA showed that approximately 46.8% of variability in the data could be explained by two principal components. Component 1 (37.26%) was more closely associated with variables related to water supply and sale, supply pipelines, and water supply finance. C2 (9.51%) was clearly related to urban water prices and average per capita water use. (2) Random forest and XGBoost algorithms were effective in classifying cities according to their region, with model testing accuracies of 87.69% and 88.32% respectively. (3) Chinese cities have consistently suffered water loss/leakage rates above 20% since 2001, and water prices are closely associated with leakage. (4) China's urban water sustainability has increased by just 3.56% between 2001 and 2013; Southwest China saw the highest growth rate in urban water supply sustainability. The implications of our research effort will be useful for decision makers in water-stressed urban areas around the world who are seeking novel insights in how to leverage statistical learning techniques to gain insights into urban drinking water supply patterns.
Identifying Determinants of Urban Water Use Using Data Mining Approach

Abstract:This study develops a new approach to quantitatively identify the most important determinants of urban water use. The approach is based on a data mining model called genetic programming (GP), which automatically optimizes the structure of the function and parameters simultaneously. With historical urban water use as the target, the GP model identifies the most relevant factors for 47 cities in northern China. Compared with conventional regressive models, the GP model performs better than the double-log model. The Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) of the GP model is 0.87, while the NSE of the double-log model is 0.79. According to the results of the case study, urban water use is determined by both socio-economic and natural variables. Total population, service industry indicators, green land area, housing area, water price, and rainfall are the most significant determinants of urban water use. Among them, total population, service industry indicators, and green land area clearly have positive contributions to urban water use, whereas rainfall has a negative impact on urban water use. The impacts of housing area and water price are complex, which implies that these determinants may have different impacts on urban water use in different conditions. The new model and new insights developed in this study could be helpful for urban water management, especially for cities that experience water scarcity.

Abstract:The effect of different temporal (from seconds to months) and spatial aggregation scales (from individual users to full urban areas) on water demand behavior has been explored to a limited degree. The effort described here extends those works by evaluating the scale effects of residential water consumption in a unique US data set that covers 10,000 households with a 1-gallon (3.79 L) hourly resolution over 2 years. A preliminary data analysis and a sequential Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is carried out to assess the effect of different temporal (weekly, daily, hourly) and spatial aggregation (individual meters and groups every 10, 100 and 1,000 m) levels on demand. Results show that individual users act very differently from each other, and individual consumer variability is only canceled out when a significant number of households are aggregated. The implications of this finding are assessed from a hydraulic modeling perspective as the spatiotemporal scale of measurements may condition the type of analysis that can be carried out in practice. However, additional work is needed to explore the point at which it may be worth to embrace a micro (per fixture/household) or a macro (per node/network) approach for different purposes.

Abstract:The sustainable use of water resources is a fundamental and strategic issue for sustainable economic and social development. Thus, it is vital to strengthen the research on the sustainable use and recycling of water resources. Based on data envelopment analysis, an Epsilon-based measure super-efficiency model considering undesirable output is constructed in this study to measure the water resource utilization efficiency (WRUE) of 286 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2018. Descriptive statistics and spatial econometric models are used to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors of the WRUE in China. The results show that the WRUE increased from 0.342 in 2003 to 0.876 in 2018, with an average annual growth rate of 6.451%. This efficiency varied significantly from northern to southern regions. In addition, economic development, foreign investment, industrial development levels, government environmental control intensity, population density, and water-use structure had significant and stable influences on this efficiency. Distinct characteristics of spatiotemporal dependence and regional heterogeneity were observed. Thus, analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics of the WRUE and its influencing mechanism is of great significance for scientifically understanding the current situation of water resource utilization in Chinese cities and improving the sustainable utilization degree of water resources.

Abstract:To identify the water-use characteristics of sectors, previous studies primarily focused on measuring water use from the production side and the consumption side. In addition to sectors causing pressure on water resources as producers and drivers, there are also other important water-using sectors as primary suppliers and intermediate good suppliers. Income-based and betweenness-based methods are introduced here to measure the water use from these viewpoints. Using China as a case study, the results reveal critical differences between different perspectives, and sectors with novel water use characteristics have been identified. The K-means clustering method is used to cluster 139 sectors into five categories with distinctive features, of which the intermediate production drivers (category 2) are the critical virtual water transmission sectors which are rarely focused on before. New water-saving strategies can be revealed from the income perspective and the betweenness perspective, such as levying an income tax or improving the use efficiency of upstream input. The novelty of this study lies in the application of an unsupervised statistical learning technique to synthesize the different roles played by economic sectors for water-saving.
Multiple accounting and driving factors of water resources use: A case study of Shanghai

Abstract:Previous research papers on urban water resources accounting were confined to the perspectives of production and consumption, ignoring the perspective of income. This paper proposes a systems framework to analyze the income, production, and consumption-based water uses and underlying driving forces of a city based on the methods of multi-scale input-output analysis and structural decomposition analysis. A case study is performed for Shanghai as a megacity. The results show that the income, production and consumption-based water uses of Shanghai had decreased from 5.70 billion m3, 10.85 billion m3 and 28.45 billion m3 in 2007 to 2.80 billion m3, 6.20 billion m3 and 24.10 billion m3 in 2017, respectively. Domestic imported primary inputs had emerged as an important virtual water supplier of Shanghai and its share of total supply-side water use had increased from 23.92% in 2007 to 42.95% in 2017. Meanwhile, about 46% and 40% of Shanghai's total consumption-based water use had been imported from other Chinese regions and foreign countries in 2017, respectively. It is revealed that trade played an important role in relieving water use pressure in Shanghai. The factors that had increased the uses of water resources in Shanghai include population, per capita value-added, per capita output, final consumption structure, and per capita final consumption. The factors that had reduced the water uses in Shanghai include technology, value added mix, output structure, value added structure, domestic import, commodity mix, and foreign import. It is suggested that in addition to curbing urban water use from the production side, more targeted water-saving measures should be devised from the supply (e.g., restricting loan to heavy water-consuming enterprises) and consumption sides (e.g., encouraging residents to buy low-water products).

Abstract:Analyzing and summarizing the evolution law of water consumption structure and proposing corresponding control countermeasures are important for realizing the coordinated development of a regional social economy. In this study, Information entropy, Lorentz curve, Gini coefficient, and Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test were conducted to reveal the spatiotemporal variations in water use characteristics in the Yellow River Basin of China. The results showed a reduction of the dominant position of the single water consumption structure in the basin during 1998-2017, which eventually increased the equilibrium degree among water consumption sectors and made the water consumption structure more reasonable and diversified. The study identified three periods of water consumption structure transformation: 1998 to 2002 as the first growth period, and 2003 to 2012 as the adjustment period, 2013 to 2017 as the second growth period. The spatial distribution was found highly even for agricultural water consumption, while less even for industrial, domestic and ecological water use. The water consumption in agriculture was much higher compared to other sectors. The study can serve as the basis for the optimal utilization of water resources.
Agent-Based Residential Water Use Behavior Simulation and Policy Implications: A Case-Study in Beijing City

Abstract:Residential water use constitutes a major part of urban water demand, and has be gaining importance in the urban water supply. Considering the complexity of residential water use system, an agent-based social simulation, i.e. the Residential Water Use Model (RWUM), is developed in this paper to capture the behavioral characteristics of residential water usage. By disaggregating total water demands down to constituent end-uses, this model can evaluate heterogeneous consumer responses on water, taking into account the factors of market penetration of water-saving technologies, regulatory policies, economic development, as well as social consciousness and preferences. Also, uncertainty analysis technique is innovatively applied in this agent-based model for parameter calibration and model robust testing. According to the case study in Beijing, this model can provide insights to water management agency in evaluating different water usage polices, as well as estimations for potential water saving for future infrastructure development planning.
Spatial Differences and Influencing Factors of Urban Water Utilization Efficiency in China

Abstract:The purpose of urban water management is to improve urban water utilization efficiency (UWUE), which in turn addresses water shortages in urban areas. The present study aimed to evaluate the UWUE of 284 cities at the prefecture level in China between 2003 and 2018 by the slacks-based measure of super-efficiency, explore its spatial differences through exploratory spatial data analysis, and analyze the influencing factors using the statistical tool Geodetector. The results showed that the average value of UWUE in China was generally low but tended to rise gradually. There were significant spatial differences in UWUE across China, with considerable global and local spatial autocorrelation, and local spatial autocorrelation was characterized primarily by high-high and low-low regions. Industrial structure and urban population were the main influencing factors for UWUE. Finally, based on these findings, we offered policy implications for improving UWUE and coordinated development between cities.
