Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important chemical for environmental applications and also used in large-scale industrial processes. Recent studies have demonstrated photocatalytic production of H2O2, but the observed production rates are low, making the materials unpractical for applications at scale. Herein, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were studied as photocatalysts for H2O2 production. Two related COFs show markedly different performances, which can be explained by the presence of donor-acceptor configurations in the backbone. N0-COF has increased charge-separation efficiencies and a better band alignment compared to its nitrogen containing analogue N3-COF. The result is that N0-COF has a H2O2 production rate of 15.7 μmol h 1 for 10 mg, which is ten times higher compared to N3-COF. In this study, both experimental and theoretical studies were used to understand the improved performance. This study reveals the importance of the backbone design of metal-free materials for advanced photocatalytic applications.
Extending the π-Conjugation System of Covalent Organic Frameworks for more Efficient Photocatalytic H2O2 Production

Abstract:The photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) towards hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a promising but challenging alternative to the industrial anthraquinone process. Crystalline porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a new generation of semiconductors, have attracted significant attention because they possess broad visible-light harvesting, tunable energy levels, and facile separation and migration of photogenerated charge pairs. The modulation of the energy levels of COFs could facilitate charge transport, resulting in better photocatalytic performance. Herein, the π-conjugation system of COFs was extended via a post-sulfurization process, leading to a considerably enhanced photocatalytic activity. Along with the sulfurization process, imine-linked COFs were converted into thiazole-linked COFs to extend the conjugation structure of COFs in the x and y directions, resulting in a higher transport of electrons. The thiazole-linked 4PE-N-S presents the best photocatalytic H2O2 generation performance with a rate of 1574 μmol g−1 h−1, which is about 5.8 and 3.7 times higher than that of imine-linked4PE-N and 4PE-TT, respectively.Our findings provide new prospects for the design and synthesis of highly active organic photocatalysts for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be used as photocatalysts for the direct photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) from oxygen, water and sunlight. However, their highly symmetric structure can lead to weak adsorption of O 2 and, therefore, unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Here we explore the local asymmetric electron distribution induced by Pauli and electron–electron repulsion in COFs to construct localized bonding sites for O 2 species, which promotes photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that TAPT–FTPB COFs (where TAPT is 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl) triazine and FTPB is 5-(5-formylthiophen-2-yl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde) with an asymmetric electron distribution show strong O 2 adsorption interaction and a record-breaking solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 1.22% for direct photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 from oxygen and water, which is higher than in the photosynthesis of plants (~0.1%). A flow-type photocatalytic microreactor integrated with TAPT–FTPB COFs exhibits 100% sterilization efficiency for killing bacteria and 97.8% conversion for photocatalytic 2-thiophene methylamine coupling. This work reports a strategy for manipulating the local electron distribution in COFs, opening the door for research on the rational design of high-performance photocatalysis with a local asymmetric electron distribution.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), with their intrinsic structural regularity and modifiable chemical functionality, have burgeoned as a pivotal material in the realm of photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis. This article reviews the recent advancements and multifaceted approaches employed in using the unique properties of COFs for high-efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production. We first introduced COFs and their advantages in the photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2. Subsequently, we spotlight the principles and evaluation of photocatalytic H2O2 generation, followed by various strategies for the incorporation of active sites aiming to optimize the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Finally, we explore the challenges and future prospects, emphasizing the necessity for a deeper mechanistic understanding and the development of scalable and economically viable COF-based photocatalysts for sustainable H2O2 production.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising photocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production from water and oxygen. However, the H2O2 generation from dual-channel pathway, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and especially water oxidation reaction (WOR), is still challenging for COFs photocatalysts. Here, a series of COFs were constructed by introducing different amounts of hydroxy group into COFs skeleton to adjust the redox potentials, exciton dissociation and active center. Overall, the β-ketoenamine-linked COF, Tz-THBZ, exhibited a more positive oxidation potential and lower exciton binding energy, leading to efficient photo-excited electrons and holes separation ability, which shows an overall photocatalytic H2O2 production yielding a rate of 4688 μmol h-1 g-1 in pure water. The density functional theory calculations further demonstrate the keto-formed benzene and triazine rings as the photooxidation and reduction center

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown great potential in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) due to their precisely designed and customized ability. Nevertheless, the quest for efficient overall photosynthesis of H2O2 in pure water without sacrificial agents using COF photocatalysts remains a formidable challenge. Herein, three pyrene-based covalent organic frameworks are synthesized using an advanced interfacial design strategy. By incorporating functional groups of F, H, and OH into a COF skeleton, their wettability and charge-separation properties are fine-tuned. These COFs show great performances as photocatalysts for H2O2 production from water and air by utilizing both the oxygen reduction reaction and water oxidation reaction pathways. Compared to PyCOF-F and PyCOF-H, PyCOF-OH demonstrates superior H2O2 production efficiency due to its improved hydrophilicity and enhanced carrier separation, achieving a remarkable rate of 2961 µmol g-1 h-1 from 25 mL pure water and air. Further, the mechanism of H2O2 production over PyCOF-OH is clarified by combining a series of control experiments, in situ characterizations, and theoretical calculations. This study offers valuable insights into the interfacial design of high-performance photocatalysts for H2O2 synthesis.

Abstract:The overall maximization of photocatalytic H2O2 production efficiency urgently requires the comprehensive optimization of each step in multiplex photocatalysis. Despite numerous endeavors, isolated researches focusing on single efficiencies hinder further advancements in overall catalytic activity. In this work, a series of imine-linked COFs (TT-COF-X), incorporating electronically tunable functional groups (X = ─H, ─OMe, ─OH, ─Br), are rationally fabricated for visible-light-driven H2O2 production via a dual-channel pathway involving 2e- water oxidation and 2e- oxygen reduction. Combined simulations and characterizations reveal that the synergistic modification of functional groups for electronic conjugation and locally intramolecular polarity collectively enhanced light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and interface water-oxygen affinity efficiency. Notably, femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (fs-TA) reveals that the polarity-induced built-in electric field play a crucial role in facilitating exciton dissociation by reacting BIEF-mediated shallow trapping state. The simultaneously optimal tri-efficiency ultimately results in the highest H2O2 production rate of 3406.25 µmol h-1 g-1 and apparent quantum yields of 8.1% of TT-COF-OH. This study offers an emerging strategy to rational design of photocatalysts from the comprehensive tri-efficiency-oriented perspective.

Abstract:The review would engender interest in acquiring a basic understanding of the relationship between the structure of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their photocatalytic performances for H2O2 production, with a particular emphasis on manipulating the electronic structures and redox active sites, and trigger a cascade of new, refreshing ideas for further exploration of more versatile COFs toward photocatalytic H2O2 production. As a chemical product with rapidly expanding demand in the field of modern energy and environmental applications, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has garnered widespread attention. However, the existing industrial production of H2O2 is plagued by high energy consumption, harmful waste emission, and severe safety issues, making it difficult to satisfy the environmental/economic production concept. Artificial photosynthesis offers a viable strategy for green and sustainable H2O2 production since it uses sunlight as an energy source to initiate the reaction of oxygen and water to produce H2O2. Among various photocatalysts, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), featuring highly ordered skeletons and well‐defined active sites, have emerged as promising photocatalysts for H2O2 production. This review presents the nascent and burgeoning area of photocatalytic H2O2 production based on COFs. First, a brief overview of photocatalytic technology is provided, followed by a detailed introduction to the principles and evaluation of the photocatalytic H2O2 generation. Subsequently, the latest research progress on the judicious design of COFs for H2O2 photosynthesis is expounded, with a particular emphasis on manipulating the electronic structures and redox active sites. Finally, an outlook on the challenges and future opportunities is proposed, in the hope of stimulating further explorations of novel molecular‐designed COFs for sustainable photosynthesis.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) serve as one of the most promising candidates for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) photosynthesis, while attaining high-performance COFs remains a formidable challenge due to the insufficient separation of photogenerated charges. Here, through the rational design of bicarbazole-based COFs (Cz-COFs), we showcase the first achievement in piezo-photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2 using COFs. Noteworthily, the ethenyl group-modified Cz-COFs (COF-DH-Eth) demonstrates a record-high yield of H2O2 (9212 μmol g-1 h-1) from air and pure water through piezo-photocatalysis, which is ca. 2.5 times higher than that of pristine Cz-COFs without ethenyl groups (COF-DH-H) under identical condition and COF-DH-Eth without ultrasonic treatment. The H2O2 production rate originates from the synergistic effect between an ultrasonication-induced polarized electric field and the spatially separated multiple charge transfer channels, which significantly promote the utilization of photogenerated electrons by directional transfer from bicarbazole groups to the ethenyl group-modified benzene rings. Several Cz-COFs and bifluorenylidene-based COFs (COF-BFTB-H) with similar twisted monomers exhibit obvious piezoelectric performance for promoting H2O2 generation, signifying that organic ligands with a twistable structure play a crucial role in creating broken symmetry structures, thereby establishing piezoelectric properties in COFs.

Abstract:The study of hydrogen peroxide production by O 2 reduction reaction using covalent organic framework (COF) photocatalysts has attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, there are still great challenges in accurately controlling their structures to achieve rapid carrier separation and efficient O 2 reduction. Based on this, we constructed the A1 -D -A2 COF photocatalytic material (TT-DTDA-COF) with asymmetric dual acceptor sites by connecting thieno [3,2-b] thiophene, benzene, and triazine as the basic units through imine bonds. Under the synergistic effect of thieno [3,2-b] thiophene and triazine electron acceptors, the separation and transfer efficiency of TT-DTDA-COF photogenerated carriers was significantly enhanced. At the same time, according to the in -situ infrared and DFT calculation results, it was found that these two acceptor units served as O 2 reduction sites, which realized the multi -site adsorption reduction of O 2 , and effectively enhanced the efficiency of photocatalytic O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 . The experimental results showed that the H 2 O 2 generation rate of TT-DTDACOF with A1 -D -A2 dual receptor structure was 1302 mu mol.g - 1 .h - 1 under visible light irradiation, which was 3.4 times higher than that of TB-DTDA-COF with single receptor D -A structure and higher than that of most of the materials reported so far. This study provides a new idea for accurately designing COF-based photocatalysts to achieve efficient O 2 reduction to produce H 2 O 2 .
Cyanide‐based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Overall Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxygen reduction to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a promising route to providing oxidants for various industrial applications. However, the lack of well-designed photocatalysts for efficient overall H2O2 production in pure water has impeded ongoing research and practical thrusts. Here we present a cyanide-based covalent organic framework (TBTN-COFs) combining 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-tricarbonitrile (TBTN) and Benzotrithiophene-2,5,8-Tricarbaldehyde (BTT) building blocks with water-affinity and charge-separation. The ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer (<500 fs) and prolonged excited state lifetime (748 ps) can be realized by TBTN-COF, resulting in a hole accumulated BTT and electron-rich TBTN building block. Under one sun, the 11013 μmol h-1 g-1 yield rate of H2O2 can be achieved without any sacrificial agent, outperforming most previous reports. Furthermore, the DFT calculation and in-situ DRIFTS spectrums suggesting a Yeager-type absorption of *O2 intermediate in the cyanide active site, which prohibits the formation of superoxide radical and revealing a favored H2O2 production pathway.

Unprecedented Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production via Covalent Triazine Frameworks Constructed from Fused Building Blocks

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention for their potential in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. However, their photocatalytic efficiency is impeded by insufficient exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport. Constructing COFs with superior planarity is an effective way to enhance the π-conjugation degree and facilitate electron-hole separation. Nonetheless, the conventional linear linkers of COFs inevitably introduce torsional strain that disrupts coplanarity.Herein, we address this issue by introducing inherently coplanar triazine rings as linkers and fused building blocks as monomers to create covalent triazine frameworks (fused CTFs) with superior coplanarity. Both experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that CTFs constructed from fused building blocks significantly enhance the electron-hole separation efficiency and improve the photocatalytic performance, compared to the CTFs constructed with non-fused building blocks. The frontier molecular orbitals and electrostatic potentials (ESP) revealed that the ORR is preferentially facilitated by the triazine rings, with the WOR likely occurring at the thiophene-containing moiety. Remarkably, CTF-BTT achieved an exceptional H2O2 production rate of 74956 μmol g-1 h-1 when employing 10% benzyl alcohol (V/V) as a sacrificial agent in an O2-saturated atmosphere, surpassing existing photocatalysts by nearly an order of magnitude.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most environmentally friendly and versatile chemical oxidizing agents, with only O2 and H2O as reaction products. It is widely used in environmental protection, industrial production, and medical fields. At present, most of the industrial production of H2O2 adopts anthraquinone oxidation, but there are shortcomings such as pollution of the environment and large energy consumption. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials formed by organic molecular building blocks connected by covalent bonds. The ordered conjugated structure of COFs not only facilitates the absorption of light energy but also promotes the transport of excited-state electrons. Therefore, the photochemical synthesis of H2O2 from water and oxygen using photocatalysts based on COFs as a green route has attracted much attention. In this review, we provide an overview of recent studies on COFs as photocatalysts and the different mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide. Then, we summarize the various strategies to improve the performance. Finally, we outline the challenges and future directions of COFs in practical applications. This review highlights the potential and application prospects of COFs in the photochemical synthesis of H2O2, aiming to provide guidance for the design of COF-based catalysts and the optimization for photocatalytic production of H2O2, in order to promote scientific development and application in this field.

Abstract:Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) presents a promising and sustainable alternative to the current industrial anthraquinone route. Recent years have witnessed the emergence of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as excellent photocatalysts, owing to their tunable band gaps, structural versatility and functional tunability. However, the current activity of COFs is limited and often relies on sacrificial agents to scavenge the holes in the photo-excited COFs. In this study, we introduce two benzothiadiazole-based COFs with tunable electronic structures and electron affinities for photocatalytic H2O2 production. The triazine-containing material, TAPT-BT-COF, exhibits outstanding charge separation and achieves a H2O2 production rate of 1418 μmol·h–1·gcat–1 in pure water, nearly twice as high as the benzene-containing TAPB-BT-COF (779 μmol·h–1·gcat–1). Moreover, TAPT-BT-COF demonstrates a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 4.9% at 420 nm. This study underscores the significance of framework conjugation and provides valuable insights for the design of advanced photocatalytic framework materials with efficient charge separation.

Abstract:Engineering of functional groups is a promising way to optimize the structure and facilitate photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and hydrophilic groups (such as –OH, -COOH, et al.) are easy to combine with water molecules through hydrogen bonding to improve the mass transfer efficiency between O 2 and COFs. However, the presence of -OH groups in the imine-linked COF, a keto-type structure would be formed which seriously affects the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production process. To solve this difficulty, here we use pyruvate as additive during the synthesis process of keto-type structure COFs, in which -OH would be re-exposed and the extra -COOH would be introduced meanwhile. Since the presence of these hydrophilic groups in Tz-Dha-H, the adsorption of O 2 is highly improved, and an electron donor-acceptor unit is reasonably formed, which results in a synergistically activated electron-push-pull effect and the acceleration of charge transfer and separation. As a result, the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 yield of Tz-Dha-H in pure water is as high as 694.99 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 1.67 times higher than that of Tz-Dha. Undoubtedly, this work proposes a new idea for improving the photocatalytic activity of H 2 O 2 production by the construction of electron-donor-acceptor unit in keto-type COFs.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a critical environmentally friendly chemical and potential liquid fuel that has been widely applied in various fields. Solar-driven H2O2 production presents remarkable sustainability compared to the traditional anthraquinone method. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) integrate high crystallinity, inherent porosity, excellent durability, and rich active sites. In the past few years, COFs, as a new type of metal-free photo-catalyst, have experienced explosive development in the photosynthesis of H2O2. In the current review, we discuss the fundamental concepts of photosynthesis of H2O2 and systematically summarize the research progress of COF materials for photo-catalytic H2O2 production. We analyze the factors that affect the photo-catalytic performance of H2O2 and evaluate strategies to improve photo-catalytic activity. Abstract:Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has the advantages of safety, non-polluting operation and energy savings. Molecular-designed covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an ideal material for achieving efficient photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 . However, the current COFs photocatalyst systems have various issues. Most of them harness only ultraviolet light and a small portion of visible light, unable to utilize 52% of the infrared (IR) light in the solar spectrum. Additionally, there are drawbacks such as the need for sacrificial agents and insufficient activity for large-scale production of H 2 O 2 . In this study, H 2 O 2 production of 7.6 μmol h −1 was achieved using IR light irradiation without a sacrificial agent, and this photocatalyst ensured 6-times H 2 O 2 production over Pristine COFs. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) under 900 nm light was 3.2%, which is 1.2-times higher than that when using Pristine COFs. This research outcome will contribute to the development of efficient and stable organic polymer photocatalysts for IR-driven H 2 O 2 photocatalysis.

Abstract:Synthesizing H2 O2 from water and air via a photocatalytic approach is ideal for efficient production of this chemical at small-scale. However, the poor activity and selectivity of the 2 e- water oxidation reaction (WOR) greatly restricts the efficiency of photocatalytic H2 O2 production. Herein we prepare a bipyridine-based covalent organic framework photocatalyst (denoted as COF-TfpBpy) for H2 O2 production from water and air. The solar-to-chemical conversion (SCC) efficiency at 298 K and 333 K is 0.57 % and 1.08 %, respectively, which are higher than the current reported highest value. The resulting H2 O2 solution is capable of degrading pollutants. A mechanistic study revealed that the excellent photocatalytic activity of COF-TfpBpy is due to the protonation of bipyridine monomer, which promotes the rate-determining reaction (2 e- WOR) and then enhances Yeager-type oxygen adsorption to accelerate 2 e- one-step oxygen reduction. This work demonstrates, for the first time, the COF-catalyzed photosynthesis of H2 O2 from water and air; and paves the way for wastewater treatment using photocatalytic H2 O2 solution.

Abstract:The electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using metal-free catalysts has emerged as a viable and sustainable alternative to the conventional anthraquinone process. However, the precise architectural design of these electrocatalysts poses a significant challenge, requiring intricate structural engineering to optimize electron transfer during the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we introduce a novel design of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that effectively shift the ORR from a four-electron to a more advantageous two-electron pathway. Notably, the JUC-660 COF, with strategically charge-modified benzyl moieties, achieved a continuous high H2O2 yield of over 1200 mmol g-1 h-1 for an impressive duration of over 85 hours in a flow cell setting, marking it as one of the most efficient metal-free and non-pyrolyzed H2O2 electrocatalysts reported to date. Theoretical computations alongside in-situ infrared spectroscopy indicate that JUC-660 markedly diminishes the adsorption of the OOH* intermediate, thereby steering the ORR towards the desired pathway. Furthermore, the versatility of JUC-660 was demonstrated through its application in the electro-Fenton reaction, where it efficiently and rapidly removed aqueous contaminants. This work delineates a pioneering approach to altering the ORR pathway, ultimately paving the way for the development of highly effective metal-free H2O2 electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven photosynthesis is a sustainable process for the production of hydrogen peroxide, the efficiency of which is plagued by side reactions. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that can form suitable intermediates and inhibit side reactions show great promise to photo-synthesize H 2 O 2 . However, the insufficient formation and separation/transfer of photogenerated charges in such materials restricts the efficiency of H 2 O 2 production. Herein, we provide a strategy for the design of donor-acceptor COFs to greatly boost H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. We demonstrate that the optimal intramolecular polarity of COFs, achieved by using suitable amounts of phenyl groups as electron donors, can maximize the free charge generation, which leads to high H 2 O 2 yield rates (605 μmol g −1 h −1 ) from water, oxygen and visible light without sacrificial agents. Combining in-situ characterization with computational calculations, we describe how the triazine N-sites with optimal N 2p states play a crucial role in H 2 O activation and selective oxidation into H 2 O 2 . We further experimentally demonstrate that H 2 O 2 can be efficiently produced in tap, river or sea water with natural sunlight and air for water decontamination.
