Artificial Intelligence-Related Dental Research: Bibliometric and Altmetric Analysis

Abstract:Background: Recent years have witnessed an explosive surge in dental research related to artificial intelligence (AI). These applications have optimised dental workflows, demonstrating significant clinical importance. Understanding the current landscape and trends of this topic is crucial for both clinicians and researchers to utilise and advance this technology. However, a comprehensive scientometric study regarding this field had yet to be performed. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify eligible "research articles" and "reviews." Literature screening and exclusion were performed by 2 investigators. Thereafter, VOSviewer was utilised in co-occurrence analysis and CiteSpace in co-citation analysis. R package Bibliometrix was employed to automatically calculate scientific impacts, determining the core authors and journals. Altmetric data were described narratively and supplemented with Spearman correlation analysis. Results: A total of 1558 research publications were included. During the past 5 years, AI-related dental publications drastically increased in number, from 36 to 581. Diagnostics and Scientific Reports published the most articles, whereas Journal of Dental Research received the highest number of citations per article. China, the US, and South Korea emerged as the most prolific countries, whilst Germany received the highest number of citations per article (23.29). Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin was the institution with the highest number of publications and citations per article (29.16). Altmetric Attention Score was correlated with News Mentions (P < .001), and significant associations were observed amongst Dimension Citations, Mendeley Readers, and Web of Science Citations (P < .001). Conclusions: The publication numbers regarding AI-related dental research have been rising rapidly and may continue their upwards trend. China, the US, South Korea, and Germany had promoted the progress of AI-related dental research. Disease diagnosis, orthodontic applications, and morphology segmentation were current hotspots. Attention mechanism, explainable AI, multimodal data fusion, and AI-generated text assistants necessitate future research and exploration.

Abstract:As an important driving force leading a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has spawned a large number of new products, new technologies, new formats and new models, and also brought more possibilities for the modernization of medical education. Looking into the future, we should work together to build a high-quality and warm AI medical education ecology. How to make human-machine collaboration smarter and human-machine dialogue more friendly is a long-term topic of "AI + medical education" Education is dynamic and evolving, thinking rationally about the relationship between people and technology. Further promoting the deep integration and innovative development of AI and medical education can better empower the modernization of education. Use CiteSpace and VOSviewer to determine the current and emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence on medical education from 2013 to 2022. Search the literatures related to Artificial Intelligence on medical education in Web of Science core database from 2013 to 2022. Use CiteSpace and VOS viewers to analyze countries, institutions, authors, references and keywords that meet the requirements. We identified 195 articles about Artificial Intelligence on medical education from 2013 to 2022 and found that the annual incidence rate increased over time. The most active country was the United States, the most active institution was the Harvard Med Sch and Univ Toronto. And Bissonnette, Vincent; Blacketer, Charlotte; Del Maestro, Rolando f; Ledows, Nicole; Mirchi, Nykan; Winkler-schwartz, Alexander; Yilamaz, Recai was the leading authors. Besides, “Medical students' attitude towards Artificial Intelligence: a multicentre survey” was the largest number of citation papers. References and keyword analysis showed that “radiology”, “medical physics” ,“ehealth” ,“surgery”,and “specialty” were the focus of these studies, while “big data”, and “management” were the frontiers of research. The bibliometric study shows that the research of Artificial Intelligence on medical education is a promising research field. The current research is mainly focused on a few aspects of medical education, with the progress of technology, it is expected to broaden the direction in the future. At present, the urgent problem to be solved is to strengthen inter-regional cooperation and improve the quality of research. Our findings provide valuable information for researchers to determine a better perspective and develop future research directions.
Where Is the Artificial Intelligence Applied in Dentistry? Systematic Review and Literature Analysis

Abstract:This literature research had two main objectives. The first objective was to quantify how frequently artificial intelligence (AI) was utilized in dental literature from 2011 until 2021. The second objective was to distinguish the focus of such publications; in particular, dental field and topic. The main inclusion criterium was an original article or review in English focused on dental utilization of AI. All other types of publications or non-dental or non-AI-focused were excluded. The information sources were Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, queried on 19 April 2022. The search string was "artificial intelligence" AND (dental OR dentistry OR tooth OR teeth OR dentofacial OR maxillofacial OR orofacial OR orthodontics OR endodontics OR periodontics OR prosthodontics). Following the removal of duplicates, all remaining publications were returned by searches and were screened by three independent operators to minimize the risk of bias. The analysis of 2011–2021 publications identified 4413 records, from which 1497 were finally selected and calculated according to the year of publication. The results confirmed a historically unprecedented boom in AI dental publications, with an average increase of 21.6% per year over the last decade and a 34.9% increase per year over the last 5 years. In the achievement of the second objective, qualitative assessment of dental AI publications since 2021 identified 1717 records, with 497 papers finally selected. The results of this assessment indicated the relative proportions of focal topics, as follows: radiology 26.36%, orthodontics 18.31%, general scope 17.10%, restorative 12.09%, surgery 11.87% and education 5.63%. The review confirms that the current use of artificial intelligence in dentistry is concentrated mainly around the evaluation of digital diagnostic methods, especially radiology; however, its implementation is expected to gradually penetrate all parts of the profession.

Abstract:Background/purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) has made deep inroads into dentistry in the last few years. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the development of AI applications that are widely employed in dentistry and evaluate their performance in terms of diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and predicting the prognosis of the treatment. Materials and methods: The literature for this paper was identified and selected by performing a thorough search in the electronic data bases like PubMed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane, Google scholar, Scopus, Web of science, and Saudi digital library published over the past two decades (January 2000-March 15, 2020).After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 43 articles were read in full and critically analyzed. Quality analysis was performed using QUADAS-2. Results: AI technologies are widely implemented in a wide range of dentistry specialties. Most of the documented work is focused on AI models that rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs). These AI models have been used in detection and diagnosis of dental caries, vertical root fractures, apical lesions, salivary gland diseases, maxillary sinusitis, maxillofacial cysts, cervical lymph nodes metastasis, osteoporosis, cancerous lesions, alveolar bone loss, predicting orthodontic extractions, need for orthodontic treatments, cephalometric analysis, age and gender determination. Conclusion: These studies indicate that the performance of an AI based automated system is excellent. They mimic the precision and accuracy of trained specialists, in some studies it was found that these systems were even able to outmatch dental specialists in terms of performance and accuracy.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. AI is not a new term, the concept of AI can be dated back to 1950. However, it has not become a practical tool until two decades ago. Owing to the rapid development of three cornerstones of current AI technology—big data (coming through digital devices), computational power, and AI algorithm—in the past two decades, AI applications have been started to provide convenience to people's lives. In dentistry, AI has been adopted in all dental disciplines, i.e., operative dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. The majority of the AI applications in dentistry go to the diagnosis based on radiographic or optical images, while other tasks are not as applicable as image-based tasks mainly due to the constraints of data availability, data uniformity, and computational power for handling 3D data. Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) is regarded as the gold standard for the decision-making of dental professionals, while AI machine learning (ML) models learn from human expertise. ML can be seen as another valuable tool to assist dental professionals in multiple stages of clinical cases. This review narrated the history and classification of AI, summarised AI applications in dentistry, discussed the relationship between EBD and ML, and aimed to help dental professionals to understand AI as a tool better to assist their routine work with improved efficiency.

Artificial Intelligence and Ethics in Dentistry: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Dentistry increasingly integrates artificial intelligence (AI) to help improve the current state of clinical dental practice. However, this revolutionary technological field raises various complex ethical challenges. The objective of this systematic scoping review is to document the current uses of AI in dentistry and the ethical concerns or challenges they imply. Three health care databases (MEDLINE [PubMed], SciVerse Scopus, and Cochrane Library) and 2 computer science databases (ArXiv, IEEE Xplore) were searched. After identifying 1,553 records, the documents were filtered, and a full-text screening was performed. In total, 178 studies were retained and analyzed by 8 researchers specialized in dentistry, AI, and ethics. The team used Covidence for data extraction and Dedoose for the identification of ethics-related information. PRISMA guidelines were followed. Among the included studies, 130 (73.0%) studies were published after 2016, and 93 (52.2%) were published in journals specialized in computer sciences. The technologies used were neural learning techniques for 75 (42.1%), traditional learning techniques for 76 (42.7%), or a combination of several technologies for 20 (11.2%). Overall, 7 countries contributed to 109 (61.2%) studies. A total of 53 different applications of AI in dentistry were identified, involving most dental specialties. The use of initial data sets for internal validation was reported in 152 (85.4%) studies. Forty-five ethical issues (related to the use AI in dentistry) were reported in 22 (12.4%) studies around 6 principles: prudence (10 times), equity (8), privacy (8), responsibility (6), democratic participation (4), and solidarity (4). The ratio of studies mentioning AI-related ethical issues has remained similar in the past years, showing that there is no increasing interest in the field of dentistry on this topic. This study confirms the growing presence of AI in dentistry and highlights a current lack of information on the ethical challenges surrounding its use. In addition, the scarcity of studies sharing their code could prevent future replications. The authors formulate recommendations to contribute to a more responsible use of AI technologies in dentistry.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence has been widely used in the field of dentistry in recent years. The present study highlights current advances and limitations in integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning in subfields of dentistry including periodontology, endodontics, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and oral pathology. This article aims to provide a systematic review of current clinical applications of artificial intelligence within different fields of dentistry. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews (PRISMA) statement was used as a formal guideline for data collection. Data was obtained from research studies for 2009–2022. The analysis included a total of 55 papers from Google Scholar, IEEE, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Results show that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve dental care, disease diagnosis and prognosis, treatment planning, and risk assessment. Finally, this study highlights the limitations of the analyzed studies and provides future directions to improve dental care.

Selected characteristics of several strains of Lactobacillus plantarum.

Abstract:Several relevant characteristics have been studied in nine Lactobacillus plantarum strains isolated from Cabrales cheese. They fermented lactose efficiently and possessed both beta-galactosidase and beta-phosphogalactosidase activities, but no significant proteolytic activity was detected. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed no high level resistance to any of the fourteen compounds tested. All the strains had a high content of extrachromosomal DNA of unknown function. A recombinant plasmid comprising pUC19 from Escherichia coli and a small cryptic plasmid from L. plantarum has been constructed and may be used to develop a shuttle vector for these species.

Abstract:Background: Dental care has been transformed by neural networks, introducing advanced methods for improving patient outcomes. By leveraging technological innovation, dental informatics aims to enhance treatment and diagnostic processes. Early diagnosis of dental problems is crucial, as it can substantially reduce dental disease incidence by ensuring timely and appropriate treatment. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) within dental informatics is a pivotal tool that has applications across all dental specialties. This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively summarize existing research on AI implementation in dentistry. It explores various techniques used for detecting oral features such as teeth, fillings, caries, prostheses, crowns, implants, and endodontic treatments. AI plays a vital role in the diagnosis of dental diseases by enabling precise and quick identification of issues that may be difficult to detect through traditional methods. Its ability to analyze large volumes of data enhances diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, leading to better patient outcomes. Methods: An extensive search was conducted across a number of databases, including Science Direct, PubMed (MEDLINE), arXiv.org, MDPI, Nature, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Wiley Online Library. Results: The studies included in this review employed a wide range of neural networks, showcasing their versatility in detecting the dental categories mentioned above. Additionally, the use of diverse datasets underscores the adaptability of these AI models to different clinical scenarios. This study highlights the compatibility, robustness, and heterogeneity among the reviewed studies. This indicates that AI technologies can be effectively integrated into current dental practices. The review also discusses potential challenges and future directions for AI in dentistry. It emphasizes the need for further research to optimize these technologies for broader clinical applications. Conclusions: By providing a detailed overview of AI's role in dentistry, this review aims to inform practitioners and researchers about the current capabilities and future potential of AI-driven dental care, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and more efficient dental practices.

Abstract:(1) Background: The rapid pace of digital development in everyday life is also reflected in dentistry, including the emergence of the first systems based on artificial intelligence (AI). This systematic review focused on the recent scientific literature and provides an overview of the application of AI in the dental discipline of prosthodontics. (2) Method: According to a modified PICO-strategy, an electronic (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL) and manual search up to 30 June 2021 was carried out for the literature published in the last five years reporting the use of AI in the field of prosthodontics. (3) Results: 560 titles were screened, of which 30 abstracts and 16 full texts were selected for further review. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Most of the identified studies reported the training and application of an AI system (n = 6) or explored the function of an intrinsic AI system in a CAD software (n = 1). (4) Conclusions: While the number of included studies reporting the use of AI was relatively low, the summary of the obtained findings by the included studies represents the latest AI developments in prosthodontics demonstrating its application for automated diagnostics, as a predictive measure, and as a classification or identification tool. In the future, AI technologies will likely be used for collecting, processing, and organizing patient-related datasets to provide patient-centered, individualized dental treatment.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is a computer system which can replicate human behavior and largely supports human actions and interpretation, but not replace human responses. Over the past few decades, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced phenomenal development and expansion. We are surrounded by several instances of AI. The most typical examples include Chat GPT, Alexa, Google Maps, autocorrect and text editors, e-payments, virtual travel booking agent, social media monitoring, gaming, including chess matches involving computers versus human chess masters, self driving cars, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, and facial recognition for biometrics such as retinal scans and fingerprint scans. AI has applications in different branches of Dentistry. This review article attempts to highlight these points and lays an emphasis on how AI is driving dentistry in the present and will improve dental care in the future. A total of 59 papers from an electronic search using Google Scholar and PubMed were used to create this narrative review. Artificial intelligence can be utilised for diagnosis, decision-making, treatment planning, early detection and prevention of oral disease, and finally result prediction by utilising cutting-edge technology in imaging. It shows how dentists can use it as a useful tool at various phases of clinical cases. The future of AI in dentistry appears to be outstanding with advancements in full artificial intelligence technology, dental assistance, and dental instructional tools. In order to help dental professionals better grasp AI as a tool to assist their work with enhanced efficiency, investigations need to be done to uncover patterns and foresee future related to oral health concerns.

Abstract:Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) has gained significant attention in ophthalmology. This paper reviews, classifies, and summarizes the research literature in this field and aims to provide readers with a detailed understanding of the current status and future directions, laying a solid foundation for further research and decision-making. Methods: Literature was retrieved from the Web of Science database. Bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R package Bibliometrix. Results: The study included 3,377 publications from 4,035 institutions in 98 countries. China and the United States had the most publications. Sun Yat-sen University is a leading institution. Translational Vision Science & Technology"published the most articles, while "Ophthalmology" had the most co-citations. Among 13,145 researchers, Ting DSW had the most publications and citations. Keywords included "Deep learning," "Diabetic retinopathy," "Machine learning," and others. Conclusion: The study highlights the promising prospects of AI in ophthalmology. Automated eye disease screening, particularly its core technology of retinal image segmentation and recognition, has become a research hotspot. AI is also expanding to complex areas like surgical assistance, predictive models. Multimodal AI, Generative Adversarial Networks, and ChatGPT have driven further technological innovation. However, implementing AI in ophthalmology also faces many challenges, including technical, regulatory, and ethical issues, and others. As these challenges are overcome, we anticipate more innovative applications, paving the way for more effective and safer eye disease treatments.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has remarkably increased its presence and significance in a wide range of sectors, including dentistry. It can mimic the intelligence of humans to undertake complex predictions and decision-making in the healthcare sector, particularly in endodontics. The models of AI, such as convolutional neural networks and/or artificial neural networks, have shown a variety of applications in endodontics, including studying the anatomy of the root canal system, forecasting the viability of stem cells of the dental pulp, measuring working lengths, pinpointing root fractures and periapical lesions and forecasting the success of retreatment procedures. Future applications of this technology were considered in relation to scheduling, patient care, drug-drug interactions, prognostic diagnosis, and robotic endodontic surgery. In endodontics, in terms of disease detection, evaluation, and prediction, AI has demonstrated accuracy and precision. AI can aid in the advancement of endodontic diagnosis and therapy, which can enhance endodontic treatment results. However, before incorporating AI models into routine clinical operations, it is still important to further certify the cost-effectiveness, dependability, and applicability of these models.
Global trends in coronary artery disease and artificial intelligence relevant studies: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Objective: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major global cause of death, greatly affecting life expectancy and quality of life for populations. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), there is new hope for accurately managing CAD. While recent studies have shown remarkable progress in AI and CAD research, there is a gap in comprehensive bibliometric analysis in this field. Therefore, this study aims to provide a thorough analysis of trends and hotspots in AI and CAD-related research utilizing bibliometrics. Materials and methods: Publications on AI and CAD relevant research from 2009 to 2023 were searched through the WoS core database (WoSCC). CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Excel 365 were used to conduct the bibliometric analysis. Results: The bibliometric analysis included 1,248 publications, indicating a steady increase in AI and CAD-related publications annually. The United States of America (USA), China, and Germany were identified as the most influential countries in this field. Research institutions such as Cedars Sinai Med Ctr, Med Univ South Carolina, Harvard Med Sch and Capital Med Univ were the main contributors to research production. FRONT CARDIOVASC MED is the top-ranked journal, while J AM COLL CARDIOL emerged as the most cited journal. Schoepf, U. Joseph, Slomka, Piotr J., Berman, Daniel S. and Dey, Damini were the most prolific authors, while U. Rajendra Acharya was the most frequently co-cited author. Research related to the AI calculation of coronary flow reserve fraction and coronary artery calcification, based on coronary CT to identify CAD and cardiovascular risk, was a key research topic in this field. The potential link between cardiovascular risk stratification and radiomics is currently at the forefront of the field. Conclusions: This study is the first to use a bibliometric approach to visualize and analyze AI and CAD-related research. The findings provide insights into recent research trends and hotspots in the field and can serve as a reference for scholars to identify critical issues in this field.

This analysis aims to provide a dynamic and longitudinal bibliometric analysis of AI-related ophthalmic papers.Methods: The Web of Science was searched to retrieve papers regarding the application of AI in ophthalmology published in the English language up to May 2022. The variables were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019 and GraphPad Prism 9. Data visualization was performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace.Results: In this study, a total of 1,686 publications were analyzed. Recently, AI-related ophthalmology research has increased exponentially. China was the most productive country in this research field, with 483 articles, but the United States of America (446 publications) contributed most to the sum of citations and the H-index. The League of European Research Universities, Ting DSW, and Daniel SW were the most prolific institution and researchers. This field is primarily concerned with diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, optical coherence tomography, and the classification and diagnosis of fundus pictures. Current hotspots in AI research include deep learning, diagnosing and predicting systemic disorders by fundus images, incidence and progression of ocular diseases, and outcome prediction.Conclusions: This analysis thoroughly reviews AI-related research in ophthalmology to help academics better comprehend the growth and possible practice consequences of AI. The association between eye and systemic biomarkers, telemedicine, real-world studies, and the development and application of new AI algorithms, such as visual converters, will continue to be research hotspots over the next few years.

Abstract:Objective. The objective of this systematic review was to investigate the quality and outcome of studies into artificial intelligence techniques, analysis, and effect in dentistry. Materials and Methods. Using the MeSH keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), dentistry, AI in dentistry, neural networks and dentistry, machine learning, AI dental imaging, and AI treatment recommendations and dentistry. Two investigators performed an electronic search in 5 databases: PubMed/MEDLINE (National Library of Medicine), Scopus (Elsevier), ScienceDirect databases (Elsevier), Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics), and the Cochrane Collaboration (Wiley). The English language articles reporting on AI in different dental specialties were screened for eligibility. Thirty-two full-text articles were selected and systematically analyzed according to a predefined inclusion criterion. These articles were analyzed as per a specific research question, and the relevant data based on article general characteristics, study and control groups, assessment methods, outcomes, and quality assessment were extracted. Results. The initial search identified 175 articles related to AI in dentistry based on the title and abstracts. The full text of 38 articles was assessed for eligibility to exclude studies not fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Six articles not related to AI in dentistry were excluded. Thirty-two articles were included in the systematic review. It was revealed that AI provides accurate patient management, dental diagnosis, prediction, and decision making. Artificial intelligence appeared as a reliable modality to enhance future implications in the various fields of dentistry, i.e., diagnostic dentistry, patient management, head and neck cancer, restorative dentistry, prosthetic dental sciences, orthodontics, radiology, and periodontics. Conclusion. The included studies describe that AI is a reliable tool to make dental care smooth, better, time-saving, and economical for practitioners. AI benefits them in fulfilling patient demand and expectations. The dentists can use AI to ensure quality treatment, better oral health care outcome, and achieve precision. AI can help to predict failures in clinical scenarios and depict reliable solutions. However, AI is increasing the scope of state-of-the-art models in dentistry but is still under development. Further studies are required to assess the clinical performance of AI techniques in dentistry.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence. AI and its subsets, machine learning and deep learning, have been incorporated into several aspects of dentistry including pediatric dentistry. However, there is a lack of documentation and analysis of the current applications of AI in pediatric dentistry. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of AI as a diagnostic tool in pediatric dentistry. Materials and Methods: The literature for this paper was identified by performing a thorough search in electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library from the years 2011 to 2021. The following keywords and Boolean operators were used: AI AND pediatric dentistry, artificial neural networks AND pediatric dentistry, convolutional neural networks AND pediatric dentistry, and machine learning AND pediatric dentistry. After applying appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles were selected, fully read, and systematically analyzed as per a specific research question. Results: Among the 13 selected articles, it was found that AI is a useful tool for dental diagnosis/classification, cephalometric landmark identification, identification of early childhood caries patterns, chronological age assessment in children, assessment of facial attractiveness in cleft patients, dental plaque detection, and oral health education. Conclusion: The selected articles indicate that AI is an effective diagnostic tool and has the potential for assisting several aspects of pediatric dentistry. However, further studies are required to assess the clinical effectiveness of these AI models.

Abstract:In this intellectual work, the clinical and educational aspects of dentistry were confronted with practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim was to provide an up-to-date overview of the upcoming changes and a brief analysis of the influential advancements in the use of AI in dental education since 2020. In addition, this review provides a guide for a dental curriculum update for undergraduate and postgraduate education in the context of advances in AI applications and their impact on dentistry. Unsurprisingly, most dental educators have limited knowledge and skills to assess AI applications, as they were not trained to do so. Also, AI technology has evolved exponentially in recent years. Factual reliability and opportunities with OpenAI Inc.'s ChatGPT are considered critical inflection points in the era of generative AI. Updating curricula at dental institutions is inevitable as advanced deep-learning approaches take over the clinical areas of dentistry and reshape diagnostics, treatment planning, management, and telemedicine screening. With recent advances in AI language models, communication with patients will change, and the foundations of dental education, including essay, thesis, or scientific paper writing, will need to adapt. However, there is a growing concern about its ethical and legal implications, and further consensus is needed for the safe and responsible implementation of AI in dental education.
