Abstract:Research has shown the occurrence of the hormesis effect in some upland rice cultures resulting from low-dose application of glyphosate. Glyphosate herbicide is widely used in Brazilian agriculture for controlling the large quantity of weeds. The aim of this work was to verify the effects of low-dose application of glyphosate herbicide on agronomic characteristics in upland rice. The experimental design used was randomized blocks comprising five low-dose applications of glyphosate herbicide (10, 20, 40, 70, and 100 g acid equivalent [a.e.] ha−1) and the control, in two stages of development of the rice culture (tillering [V4] and floral differentiation [R1]) with four repetitions. The agronomic traits of upland rice were evaluated. Data were subjected to variance analysis, polynomial regression analysis for the quantitative factor, and Tukey's test for the qualitative factor at p < 0.05. The grain yield and the number of spikelets per panicle increased with the application of 10 g a.e. ha−1 of glyphosate at the floral differentiation stage. Until the low dose of 75 g a.e. ha−1, there was an increase in the number of panicles. Low doses between 70 and 100 g a.e. ha−1 applied in R1 provided less spikelets per panicle, lower 100-grain weight, and lower grain yield. The leaf flavonoid content increased due to the increase in the low doses of glyphosate herbicide.

In vitro selection of glyphosate-tolerant variants from long-term callus cultures of Zoysia matrella [L.] Merr

Abstract:A complete protocol of in vitro selection and greenhouse screening for glyphosate-tolerant variants in manilagrass ( Zoysia matrella [L.] Merr) was established in this study. Newly subcultured calli of more than 5 years’ old were transferred to selection medium containing 2 mM glyphosate. After two rounds of selection, 220 calli survived out of 840 and were transferred to regeneration medium without glyphosate. Regenerated plantlets were then transferred to regeneration medium containing 0.5 mM glyphosate to select tolerant plantlets. After 1-month growth, there were plantlets remained green and new shoots formed beside or on discolored explants. These surviving organisms were then transferred to fresh regeneration medium for further growth. Fully developed plantlets were transferred to a green house and then subjected to greenhouse screening by foliar spraying with 0.05 % glyphosate solution. Six glyphosate-tolerant plantlets, TP1-TP6, were obtained and proliferated for determination of sod-tolerance using morphological and physiological measurements. Fourteen days after foliar application with 0.1 % glyphosate, only TP5 showed enhanced sod-tolerance. The dark green color index value of TP5 was significantly higher than CK2, demonstrating that TP5 suffered less injury from glyphosate than CK2. Different physiological characters were also observed in CK1, CK2 and TP5. Significantly higher chlorophyll a content and catalase activity were observed in TP5 than in CK1. Fourteen days after treatment (DAT), the ion leakage, proline content and ascorbate peroxidase activity of CK2 and TP5 increased significantly, but the ion leakage of TP5 was significantly lower than that of CK2. The guaiacol peroxidase activity of TP5 increased significantly 14 DAT, and was significantly higher than that of CK1 and CK2. No change in shikimate content was observed in CK2 or TP5 14 DAT.
Control of Urochloa decumbens Using Glyphosate Applied by Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Ground Sprayer with Different Spray Nozzles

Abstract:The use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) to spray pesticides currently occurs, but knowledge about this technology is lacking due to the different locations, targets, and products applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the control of Urochloa decumbens with glyphosate applied using an RPA (10 L ha−1) equipped with different spray nozzles (XR 11001 and AirMix 11001). For the purpose of comparison, ground application was also performed (100 L ha−1). The deposition was evaluated by means of the quantification of a tracer by spectrophotometry, the droplet spectrum was evaluated with water-sensitive paper, and the control efficiency was evaluated based on visual measurements with percentage scores. Statistical process control was used to analyse the quality of the deposition in the area. The results showed that the application via RPA presented a greater amount of tracer on the leaves than the ground application, suggesting that the former is a good option for application, even providing a lower coverage and number of droplets per area. Both application methods were effective at controlling Urochloa decumbens. The nozzles showed potential for use in applications, with control efficiency higher than 84% from 21 days after application. The percentage of droplets smaller than 100 μm in the applications was less than 5%. No nonrandom behaviour was observed during deposition, indicating a high-quality process.

Abstract:Low glyphosate doses that produce hormesis may alter the susceptibility to herbicides of weeds or enhance their propagation and dispersal. The objective of this work was to evaluate the hormetic effects of glyphosate on the vegetative, phenological and reproductive development in resistant (R) and susceptible (S) Conyza sumatrensis biotypes. The glyphosate resistance level of biotype R was 11.2-fold compared to the S biotype. Glyphosate doses <11.25 g ae ha −1 induced temporary and permanent hormetic effects for the number of leaves, plant height and dry mass accumulation up to 28 d after application in both R and S biotypes. The S biotype required 15–19% fewer thermal units at 1.4 and 2.8 g ae ha −1 glyphosate than untreated plants to reach the bolting stage. Also, this biotype had less thermal units associated with the appearance (1225 vs 1408 units) and opening (1520 vs 1765 units) of the first capitulum than the R biotype. In addition, glyphosate affected reproductive traits of both biotypes compared to their controls, increasing the number of capitulum's and seeds per plant up to 37 and 41% (at 2.8 and 0.7 g ae h −1 , respectively) in the S biotype, and by 48 and 114% (both at 5.6 g ae ha −1 ) in the R biotype. Depending on environmental parameters, glyphosate may or may not cause hormetic effects on the vegetative and phenological development of C. sumatrenis biotypes; however, this herbicide increases the speed and fecundity of reproduction, regardless of the glyphosate susceptibility level, which can alter the population dynamics and glyphosate susceptibility of future generations.

Abstract:Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is frequently detected in water bodies and is harmful to aquatic systems. We conducted an experiment to explore the ecological sensitivity of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle and Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara to glyphosate. Our research focused on the physiological responses of H. verticillata and V. natans after exposure to various concentrations of glyphosate (0, 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 80 mg/L) in hydroponic culture after one day (1D) and seven days (7D). The results show that after 1D, the soluble protein content of H. verticillata was significantly stimulated under low herbicide concentrations. Other indices for H. verticillata and V. natans had no remarkable changes at 1D. After 7D of treatment, the soluble protein content of H. verticillata showed no significant differences, while the malondialdehyde (MDA), pigment contents and catalase (CAT) activity significantly increased at low glyphosate concentrations. Guaiacol peroxidase (POD) activity in H. verticillata significantly increased with increasing herbicide concentrations. The chlorophyll a/b ratio of H. verticillata sharply decreased above 10 mg/L. For V. natans, soluble protein, chlorophyll a, and carotenoid content; and CAT activity declined significantly after glyphosate application, while other indicators showed no significant changes. Our results indicate that glyphosate concentrations from 0 to 80 mg/L can induce oxidative stress in H. verticillate and may impede metabolism processes for protein and pigments without causing oxidative stress in V. natans. Taken together, our results suggest that the sensitivity of H. verticillata to glyphosate exposure is higher than that of V. natans.

Abstract:This study evaluated pasture productivity and nutritional characteristics of Urochloa decumbens in silvopastoral systems (SPS) with different eucalyptus cultivars and spatial arrangements providing differing levels of shade. SPS were arranged to provide 46 % shade (eucalyptus trees arranged in 2 double rows 2 m apart, with trees every 3 m in each row, and 20 m between double rows), 60 % shade (eucalyptus trees arranged in 2 double rows 2 m apart, with trees every 2 m in each row in double rows and 9 m between double rows) and 57 % shade (eucalyptus trees arranged in a single row, with trees every 2 m in the row and 9 m between rows) using eucalyptus cultivars ‘GG100’, ‘I144’ or ‘VM58’. Two full sun pastures treated as managed (soil pH correction and N, P and K fertilizer application) or non-managed (no correction or fertilizer application) were evaluated in addition to the 3 SPS arrangements. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 1,439 μmol/m2/s in full sun compared with a mean of 715 μmol/m2/s under different SPS arrangements. Leaf area index of U. decumbens was 28 % higher in 46 % shade and lower in all shade arrangements compared with full sun managed pasture. The dry matter yield was 58 % lower in 46 % shade and 86 % lower in 60 % shade compared with full sun managed pasture. The crude protein content in SPS pastures was higher than in the full sun pastures, with higher values in 57 % and 60 % shade. SPS significantly reduced the PAR and forage yield. These results indicate that in systems where the main objective is animal production, spacing between tree rows greater than 20 m should be used to provide sufficient high-quality grass.

Abstract:Chemical desiccation is widely used in agriculture to anticipate harvest and mitigate the effects of adverse environmental conditions. It is applied to both grains and seeds. Although this practice is widely used, there are still significant gaps in understanding the effects of different herbicide application times on seed quality and plant physiological responses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different herbicide application times on cowpea, focusing on seed quality, physiological responses, and biochemical composition, including chlorophylls, carotenoids, sugars, and proline, under nocturnal desiccation. In the first experiment, eight herbicides and two mixtures were applied at night: diquat, flumioxazin, diquat + flumioxazin, glufosinate ammonium, saflufenacil, carfentrazone, diquat + carfentrazone, atrazine, and glyphosate. All of the tested herbicides caused a reduction in normal seedling formation, with the diquat + carfentrazone combination resulting in 100% abnormal seedlings. A significant decrease in chlorophyll levels (chlorophyll a: 63.5%, chlorophyll b: 50.2%) was observed using diquat, which indicates damage to photosynthetic processes, while the carotenoid content increased. Total soluble sugars and proline were also negatively impacted, reflecting physiological stress and metabolic changes in seedlings. In the second experiment, three application times were tested with diquat, diquat + flumioxazin, and diquat + carfentrazone. Nocturnal application showed the most significant reduction in chlorophyll levels and increased carotenoid levels. Application at noon and late afternoon also significantly changed the soluble sugar and proline levels. These results indicate that the herbicide application time directly influences the seeds' physiological quality.
High [CO2] and Temperature Increase Resistance to Cyhalofop-Butyl in Multiple-Resistant Echinochloa colona

Abstract:Changes in the environment, specifically rising temperature and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration [CO2], can alter the growth and physiology of weedy plants. These changes could alter herbicide efficacy, crop-weed interaction, and weed management. The objectives of this research were to quantify the effects of increased atmospheric [CO2] and temperature on absorption, translocation and efficacy of cyhalofop-butyl on multiple-resistant (MR) and susceptible (S) Echinochloa colona genotypes. E. colona, or junglerice, is a troublesome weed in rice and in agronomic and horticultural crops worldwide. Cyhalofop-butyl is a grass herbicide that selectively controls Echinochloa spp. in rice. Maximum 14C-cyhalofop-butyl absorption occurred at 120 h after herbicide treatment (HAT) with >97% of cyhalofop-butyl retained in the treated leaf regardless of [CO2], temperature, or genotype. Neither temperature nor [CO2] affected herbicide absorption into the leaf. The translocation of herbicide was slightly reduced in the MR plants vs. S plants either under elevated [CO2] or high temperature. Although plants grown under high [CO2] or high temperature were taller than those in ambient conditions, neither high [CO2] nor high temperature reduced the herbicide efficacy on susceptible plants. However, herbicide efficacy was reduced on MR plants grown under high [CO2] or high temperature about 50% compared to MR plants at ambient conditions. High [CO2] and high temperature increased the resistance level of MR E. colona to cyhalofop-butyl. To mitigate rapid resistance evolution under a changing climate, weed management practitioners must implement measures to reduce the herbicide selection pressure. These measures include reduction of weed population size through reduction of the soil seedbank, ensuring complete control of current infestations with multiple herbicide modes of action in mixture and in sequence, augmenting herbicides with mechanical control where possible, rotation with weed-competitive crops, use of weed-competitive cultivars, use of weed-suppressive cover crops, and other practices recommended for integrated weed management.

Abstract:The herbicide mixture diclosulam + halauxifen appears to be an alternative for the control of Conyza spp.; however, the spray volume may result in different spray deposition effects on the target and, therefore, on the control. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of different spray volumes of diclosulam + halauxifen on the control of and damage to the leaf surface of Conyza spp. The experiment was conducted in the field in a randomized block design with four replications. Diclosulam + halauxifen (23.52 g ai ha-1 + 6.32 g ae ha-1) was applied to Conyza spp. at average heights greater than 10 cm, followed by sequential application of glufosinate ammonium (500 g ai ha-1) after 14 days. Different spray volumes (200, 150, 100, 80 and 50 L ha-1) were used. The percentage of droplet coverage was evaluated using hydrosensitive paper and analyzed using DropScan software. After 24 hours of initial application, the leaves were collected for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although the different spray volumes did not affect the control, faster necrosis effects were observed at 150 and 200 L ha-1. Moreover, the trichome and stomatal density decreased at a spray volume of 200 L ha-1, indicating greater initial damage at this spray volume. Thus, increased spray spray volumes result in increased spray spray deposition, damage to leaf structures and consequently increased control speed.
Physiological and molecular mechanisms of glyphosate tolerance in an in vitro selected cotton mutant

Abstract:We have selected an upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cell line (R1098) that is highly tolerant to glyphosate. This cell line was developed by in vitro selection with gradually increasing glyphosate concentrations, and its mechanisms conferring glyphosate tolerance were studied. Based on a whole-plant dose–response bioassay, R1098 plants were tolerant to glyphosate at a concentration of 1500gaeha−1 glyphosate (1.5× the recommended field rate) whereas the control plants (Coker 312) were unable to survive at 150gaeha−1 glyphosate. Coker 312 accumulated 13.1 times more shikimate in leaves at 5days after glyphosate treatment (1500gaeha−1) than that of R1098. Two distinct cDNAs for 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), EPSPS-1 and EPSPS-2, were isolated from R1098. Both cDNAs were 97.7% identical within the common protein-coding region and the predicted sequences of the mature proteins were greater than 83% identical with EPSPS proteins from other known higher plants. In comparison to the glyphosate-susceptible cotton Coker 312, sequence analysis of the EPSPS-1 gene indicated that R1098 has an alanine insertion at nucleotide position 1216 resulting in frameshift. It leads to two copy functional EPSPS genes in R1098. There was no difference between R1098 and Coker 312 in EPSPS mRNA levels before glyphosate treatment. However, its treatment caused a 2–4 times increase in the basal EPSPS mRNA level in R1098.
Glyphosate hormesis induced by treatment via seed stimulates the growth and biomass accumulation in soybean seedlings

Abstract:Glyphosate hormesis, identified as a potential means to enhance crop yields, encounters practical constraints because it is typically assessed through foliar applications. The expression and extend of hormesis in this approach are influenced by unpredictable environmental conditions, highlighting the need to explore alternative glyphosate application methods, such as seed treatment. This study aimed to assess glyphosate hormesis on growth rates and biomass accumulation in seedlings soybean cultivars. Two dose-response experiments [doses from 0 to 2880 g acid equivalent (ae) ha −1 ], one via foliar and one via seed, were conducted on three soybean cultivars [one non-glyphosate-resistant (NGR) and two glyphosate-resistant (GR, one RR and one RR2)]. In a subsequent experiment, three safe glyphosate doses (0, 90 and 180 g ae ha −1 ) applied via seed were evaluated on four soybean cultivars (two RR and two RR2). For foliar applications, the range of glyphosate doses increasing growth rates and dry biomass by 12–28 % were 5.6–45 g ae ha −1 for the NGR cultivar, of 45–720 g ae ha −1 for RR and of 11.25–180 g ae ha −1 for RR2. In the seed treatment, biomass increases of 16–60 % occurred at 45–180 g ae ha −1 for the NGR and RR cultivars, and 90–360 g ae ha −1 for RR2. Glyphosate doses of 90 and 180 g ae ha −1 , applied via seeds, provided greater growth and biomass accumulation for the RR and RR2 soybean cultivars. Both foliar and seed applications of glyphosate increased growth and biomass accumulation in soybean cultivars, with seed treatments showing greater and more consistent enhancements. These findings propose practical and viable alternative for harnessing glyphosate hormesis to facilitate the early development of soybeans and potentially enhance crop yield.

Abstract:Brazil is an important global agricultural producer and to increase production the country has extensively used glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH), surpassing consumption and sales records. Consequently, concerns have arisen regarding the potential impact of GBH on ecosystems and non-target organisms. Thus, the effects of GBH exposure were evaluated throughout the cricket Gryllus ( Gryllus ) assimilis ontogeny, with five developmental stages. Each period contained 3 control and 3 treated boxes, with 15 crickets each, resulting in 90 insects at a time. The control groups received water, while the treated ones were continuously exposed to GBH (0.864 mg.GBH.L −1 ), with the solutions changed every 48 h. After each exposure time the crickets' group were euthanized to assess the activity of antioxidant enzymes (GST, GR, GPx, and CAT), cholinergic enzymes (ChE), and lipid peroxidation (LPO). The results revealed changes in the systems throughout different developmental phases. Specifically, CAT activity exhibited a significant increase during the nymphal phase, associated with the dismutation of hydrogen peroxide. The GBH increased GST, indicating its role in cellular detoxification, particularly during adulthood. In the senescence stage there was a considerable rise in ChE enzymes, suggesting their involvement in both, choline esters breakdown and potential pesticide detoxification. The action of these enzymes to effectively control lipid peroxidation shows the adaptability of this species to environmental contamination. These findings underscore the long-term effects of agrochemical pollution and emphasize the importance of sustainable practices, effective regulations, and alternative weed control methods.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Soil compaction is a recurring problem in agriculture that ultimately leads to a reduction in crop productivity. However, the application of agro-industrial residues from the burning of plant biomass can improve the chemical and physical properties of soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of Paiaguás grass under different soil densities and wood ash doses. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, under a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, with five soil compaction values (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 Mg m-3) and five doses of wood ash (0, 8, 16, 24, and 32 g dm-3), with four replicates. A soil density greater than 1.2 Mg m-3 reduced the dry mass of Paiaguás grass. The wood ash dose of 20.42 g dm-3 led to the highest shoot dry mass. Root growth was highest at a wood ash dose of 16.52 g dm-3.

Thus, the objective was to evaluate the morphophysiological characteristics of maize plants (Zea mays L.), Urochloa ruziziensis and Panicum maximum growing in soil with or without subsurface compaction. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, adopting the factorial scheme 4 x 2, being three cover crops (single corn, U. ruziziensis, P. maximum - BRS Zuri) and a corn-U. ruziziensis intercrop grown in soil with and without compaction in the layer of 10-15 cm of depth, with four replications. Physiological and morphological variables and dry matter accumulation of roots and shoots were evaluated. Subsurface compaction reduced the shoot dry mass of U. ruziziensis, corn-U. ruziziensis and single corn. The U. ruziziensis and single corn plants had a reduction in the dry mass of roots in different layers of depth and in conditions of subsurface compaction. The U. ruziziensis and P. maximum grasses showed higher photosynthetic rate when growing in compacted soil. Corn was the species most sensitive to subsurface compaction, showing the greatest reduction in physiological parameters and biomass accumulation. The corn-U. ruziziensis intercrop minimizes the damage of soil compaction to maize plants. P. maximum grass is a promising species to be cultivated in compacted soils, as it demonstrates good adaptability and resistance to this condition; the U. ruziziensis is an efficient species in soils without subsurface compaction.

Abstract:the herbicide glyphosate has a non-selective active ingredient for the functional groups carboxyl, amino, and phosphonate. Its use was accentuated with the opening of agricultural frontiers and the use of genetically modified organisms, due to the great demand for food in the world. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze what scientific productions from 2010 to 2020 bring about the glyphosate herbicide theme and its impacts on the environment. the study comprised the search for papers in the Capes - Web of Science and Scopus Journals, covering 62 scientific studies. Europe and America stood out in scientific productions, with 38.7 and 37.1% of published works, respectively. the countries that stood out were Argentina, Brazil, United States, and France, both with 7 productions each. Regarding the researched topics, ‘Biological test in a contaminated environment’ stands out, with 9 publications, followed by ‘Adsorption’ with 8 publications. However, there is still a demand for studies, for the development of methods for determining the herbicide glyphosate and its metabolite Ampa, mainly in soil and water, as it is a potential contaminant, to guide decisions about it and propose guidelines that support the technique and scientifically their spectrum of action.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Nitrogen (N) is the main nutrient responsible for the green coloration of lawns but also stimulates the growth of the aerial portion of grass, thus increasing mowing expenses. Therefore, herbicides may be used as a growth regulator. The ideal herbicide will reduce lawn height without affecting esthetics. Toward this end, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the green coloration of Emerald grass ( Zoysia japonica Steud.) under the effect of different N doses or herbicides used as growth regulators. The study site consisted of randomized blocks containing 20 treatments arranged in a 5×4 factorial design with four treatment groups: four herbicides (glyphosate, imazaquin, imazethapyr, and metsulfuron-methyl, accounting for 200, 420, 80, and 140g ha-1 of the active ingredient, respectively) and the control sample (no herbicide); and three doses of N in the form of urea (5, 10, and 20g m-2), divided into five applications per year, in addition to a treatment without N. Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) was assessed and the aerial portion of the lawn was measured with digital image analysis. Doses of N ranging from 10 to 20g m-2, divided into five applications a year, provided the lawn with intense green coloration, and the herbicides glyphosate (200g ha-1), imazaquin (420g ha-1), and imazethapyr (80g ha-1) were reported to be suitable for use as growth regulators of the study species, considering maintenance of esthetic quality (green coloration). The digital image analysis of the aerial portion provided more accurate results than use of a chlorophyll meter with regard to the recommendation of both N dose and herbicides to be used as growth regulators of Emerald grass.
Differential Tolerance of Glyphosate-Susceptible and Glyphosate-Resistant Biotypes of Junglerice (Echinochloa colona) to Environments during Germination, Growth, and Intraspecific Competition

Abstract:Abstract Much of the agricultural area in California's southwestern San Joaquin Valley (SJV) is prone to moisture stress and high soil-salinity conditions. Increased prevalence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotypes of junglerice [Echinochloa colona (L.) Link] in these environments and their ecological implications need to be further explored. Studies were conducted on GR and glyphosate-susceptible (GS) biotypes of E. colona to compare the effects of moisture and salinity stress on seed germination and salinity stress alone on growth and seed production. Intraspecific competition between the GR and GS plants was also assessed in a replacement series design experiment. With respect to germination, both biotypes were tolerant to moisture and salinity stress at germination; however, the GR biotype was more tolerant than the GS biotype. Water potential and electrical conductivity (EC) levels that reduced germination by 50% were estimated as –1.5 and –2.3 MPa and 8.5 and 12 dS m-1 for the GS and GR biotypes, respectively. The EC levels that reduced aboveground biomass by 50% were estimated as 9 and 11.5 dS m-1 for the GS and GR biotypes, respectively. Seed production was generally greater in the GR than the GS plants below 10 dS m-1. All plants produced up to 140 seeds plant-1, even at 20 dS m-1. The GR plants were more competitive and produced more aboveground dry biomass and seeds than the GS plants when grown together or alone. In conclusion, differences between these particular GR and GS biotypes to environmental stresses and intraspecific competition were noted that could have ecological implications for their prevalence in the southwestern SJV. The results also suggested that there could be high genetic variability and phenotypic plasticity in E. colona populations in the SJV and further population shifts could occur due to selection pressure from glyphosate.

The Molecular, Morphological and Genetic Characterization of Glyphosate Resistance in Conyza bonariensis from South Africa

Abstract:Six Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist populations were screened in a pot experiment at the University of Pretoria's Hatfield experimental farm to evaluate and confirm the degree of glyphosate response. Resistance factors ranged from 2.7- to 24.8-fold compared to the most susceptible biotype. Partial sequencing of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene found no mutation at the Thr102, Ala103 or Pro106 positions. EPSPS mRNA expression levels in glyphosate-resistant biotypes (Swellendam and Piketberg seed sampling sites) were comparable or lower than those in susceptible biotypes (George and Fauresmith sites). Additionally, the highest expression level was reported in the susceptible Fauresmith biotype. These results indicate that glyphosate resistance in the tested resistant biotypes is not caused by target-site mutations and EPSPS gene amplification. Leaf surface characteristics can influence the spread and subsequent absorption of glyphosate. The study established non-significant results in the amount of leaf wax and insufficient mean separations in cuticle thickness and trichome density data. Therefore, the observed differences in response of biotypes to glyphosate treatment could not be attributed conclusively to differences in the leaf morphological characteristics investigated. Results from the inheritance study were consistent with glyphosate resistance being inherited in an incompletely dominant manner when plants were treated with glyphosate herbicide at 900 g ae ha−1.
