Abstract:In this study, the effects of baker's yeast as probiotics was evaluated in Nile tilapia reared at high density. Juvenile tilapia were distributed to tanks at high density (436 fish/m(3)) and fed with basal diet (CK) or diets supplemented with live (LY) or heat-inactivated yeast (HIY). Another group of fish reared at low density (218 fish/m(3)) and fed with basal diet was also included (LowCK). After 8 weeks of feeding, growth, feed utilization, gut microvilli morphology, digestive enzymes, and expressions of hsp70 and inflammation-related cytokines in the intestine were assessed. Intestinal microbiota was investigated using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. Fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila to evaluate disease resistance. High rearing density significantly decreased the growth, feed utilization, microvilli length, and disease resistance of fish (CK versus LowCK). Moreover, the intestinal hsp70 expression was increased in fish reared at high density, supporting a stress condition. Compared to CK group, supplementation of live yeast significantly increased gut microvilli length and trypsin activity, decreased intestinal hsp70 expression, and enhanced resistance of fish against A. hydrophila (reflected by reduced intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity 24 h post infection). The gut microbiota was not markedly influenced by either rearing density or yeast supplementation. Heat-inactivated yeast (HIY) didn't display the beneficial effects observed in LY except an increase in gut trypsin activity, suggesting the importance of yeast viability and thus secretory metabolites of yeast. In conclusion, live baker's yeast may alleviate the negative effects induced by crowding stress, and has the potential to be used as probiotics for tilapia reared at high density.

Abstract:A 120-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different stocking densities on growth, the non-specific immunities, antioxidant status and digestive enzyme activities of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings under a zero-water exchange biofloc system. Tilapias (0.51 ± 0.05 g) were randomly distributed in twelve tanks, each with 300 L water. The experimental design was completely randomized using three replications with four treatments 166 orgs m−3 (LD, low density), 333 orgs m−3 (MD, middle density) and 600 orgs m−3 (HD, high density) with glucose added as biofloc groups, and a clear water group without glucose added as a control 333 orgs m−3. The fish cultured in LD and MD group showed higher final body weight. For the digestive enzymes, the lipase, trypsin, and amylase activities were all depressed in HD group and control group. Regarding the immune and antioxidant abilities, significantly lower values (P < 0.05) of the lysozyme, complement 3, and glutathione were observed for the fish that reared in the control group and HD group. The stress indicator, the cortisol, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and glucose concentrations were also depressed in HD group and control group, meanwhile the alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase were all higher in HD group and control group. The significant higher survival was observed in the LD and MD group after Vibrio harveyi challenge test. The results of the experiment indicated that the biofloc in situ had the effects of anti-crowding stress.

Collection and Analysis of Emotional Speech Focused on the Psychological and Acoustical Diversity

Abstract:How to effectively collect diverse data of sponta-neous speech and to upgrade various speech processing techniques is a serious issue. In this paper, we introduce our proposed method “SEN method”, which aims to collect psychologically and acoustically diverse acted speech effectively with naturalness. We created detailed directions, on the basis of various real-life scenarios, consulting with a professional actress in order to facilitate duplicating diverse expressions for the actor or actress. We compared fifty speech data by the SEN method and fifty others by the legacy method, where simple basic emotional words are used as prompts. In the psychological space, the SEN data filled up low density areas of the space of the legacy method. In order to confirm the causes of this phenomenon, we analyzed the relationship between the psychological and acoustical features. Our results demonstrate the advantage of the SEN method, which is the generation of psychologically diverse speech that cannot be described by representative acoustical features.

Abstract:The growth performances, survival rate, and biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in water treated with probiotic were investigated. Samples of 225 Nile tilapia (5.8 ± 0.10 g) were reared for 90 days in three different treatments with three replications as the control group (no probiotic), and two test groups with probiotics consisting of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (5.6 × 108 cfu g−1) and Bacillus spp. (B. subtilis, B. megaterium, and B. licheniformis) (1 × 106 cfu g−1) added in water. Fish reared in water treated with probiotic Bacillus spp. and yeast (S. cerevisiae) showed a synergistic effect which significantly improved (p < 0.05) growth performances as final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), and average daily growth gain (ADG) compared to the control group with decreased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. There were no significant differences in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in all treatments. Results showed that water treated with S. cerevisiae or Bacillus spp. as a probiotic enhanced the growth performances of Nile tilapia and this method can be applied to increase tilapia production in the Thai aquaculture industry.

Abstract:This study explores the effects of dietary supplementation with passion fruit peel pectin ( Passiflora edulis ) and red yeast cell walls ( Sporidiobolus pararoseus ) on growth performance, immunity, intestinal morphology, gene expression, and gut microbiota of Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ). Nile tilapia with an initial body weight of approximately 15 ± 0.06 g were fed four isonitrogenous (29.09–29.94%), isolipidic (3.01–4.28%), and isoenergetic (4119–4214 Cal/g) diets containing 0 g kg −1 pectin or red yeast cell walls (T1 - Control), 10 g kg −1 pectin (T2), 10 g kg −1 red yeast (T3), and a combination of 10 g kg −1 pectin and 10 g kg −1 red yeast (T4) for 8 weeks. Growth rates and immune responses were assessed at 4 and 8 weeks, while histology, relative immune and antioxidant gene expression, and gut microbiota analysis were conducted after 8 weeks of feeding. The results showed that the combined supplementation (T4) significantly enhanced growth performance metrics, including final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio, particularly by week 8, compared to T1, T2, and T3 ( P < 0.05). Immunological assessments revealed increased lysozyme and peroxidase activities in both skin mucus and serum, with the T4 group showing the most pronounced improvements. Additionally, antioxidant and immune-related gene expression, including glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GSR), and interleukin-1 (IL1), were upregulated in the gut, while intestinal morphology exhibited improved villus height and width. Gut microbiota analysis indicated increased alpha and beta diversity, with a notable rise in beneficial phyla such as Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes in the supplemented groups. These findings suggest that the combined use of pectin and red yeast cell walls as prebiotics in aquaculture can enhance the health and growth of Nile tilapia, offering a promising alternative to traditional practices. Further research is needed to determine optimal dosages for maximizing these benefits.

Abstract:This research work investigated the efficacy of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens AV5 in mitigating the stress effects of stocking densities in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). 520 healthy Nile tilapia fingerlings (24.43 ± 1.4g) were randomly allocated to 16 plastic tanks, each with a capacity of 400L. Two stocking densities were tested: low density (37.5 fish/m³) and high density (125 fish/m³) with four treatment groups(low density with a control diet (LDC), high density with a control diet (HDC), low density with a supplemented diet (LDS), and high density with a supplemented diet (HDS)) for 8 weeks. HDC exhibited lower values (P < 0.05) for specific growth rate, final weight, weight gain rate, and specific growth rate than fish fed at LDC, LDS, and HDS. The lowest feed conversion ratio was recorded at the LDS and HDS. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in survival rates among treatments. There were no notable disparities (P > 0.05) in the LDC, LDS, and HDS body composition. Antioxidant enzyme activities were greater in LDC, LDS, and HDS than in HDC, while malondialdehyde levels were higher in HDC, and hematology parameters in HDS were improved compared to HDC. Elevated levels (P < 0.05) of phagocytic and lysozyme activity were seen in LDS and HDS. There was no change in glucose levels in HDS and LDC. Nonetheless, cortisol was elevated in HDC compared to LDC, LDS, and HDS. Hence, B. amyloliquefaciens AV5(1 × 108 cfu/g) is a potential probiotic to alleviate HDC-induced stress in O. niloticus.

Abstract:Seaweed draws a lot of attention for its vital role in aquaculture as it contains beneficial biological compounds that undoubtedly might help in the development of this field. The current study sheds light on the potential efficiency of dietary supplements of Grateloupia acuminata and G. doryphore (Halymeniaceae) nanoparticles (GNS) at different levels with bionanocomposite cellulose acetate membranes (CA/bio-AgNps) on improved growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immunity, antioxidative, resistance against infectious pathogens, and characterization of water quality treated with CA/bio-AgNps that is used in rearing Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ). Four concentrations (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 ml/L) of GNS extract were tested as potential anti-bacterial and for the efficacy of being parasitic. Fish with an average weight (24.46 ± 0. 50 g) were apportioned into six experimental groups (T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5) represented as 0.0%, 0.0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0% GNS in diets with CA/bio-AgNps, respectively. Injection of fish with Aeromonas hydrophila was performed at the end of the trial. Chemical and bacteriological water indices significantly showed improvement after being treated with CA/bio-AgNps than the control group. Growth, carcass composition, digestive enzyme, and hematological and biochemical indices were significantly noticed positive ( p< 0.05), especially T4 and T5, than the control group. In parallel, a significant improvement was noticed in serum lysozyme, total immunoglobulin, complement C3, antioxidative enzyme, and the relative expression of hepatic and inflammatory genes with an increased level of GNS ( p< 0.05) are upregulated than the control group. Remarkably, GNS-supplemented diets and extracts provided positive efficacy against A. hydrophila with a decreased percentage of fish mortality, besides efficacy on antibacterial strains and Cichlidogyrus tilapiae , respectively. To sum up, the seaweed extract with CA/bio-AgNps resulted in better growth performance of fish, antipathogenic effect, and health status. Furthermore, CA/bio-AgNps were vital in improving water characteristics. They should be studied and applied more in the future.

Abstract:A total of 180 Nile tilapia at an average initial body weight of 3.9 g were randomly allocated to 2 treatments,each of which had three replicates of 30 fish/tank and was used to investigate the effects of flavomycin on growth performance,intestinal microflora and immunity by providing applicable evidences of flavomycin in aquaculture.The fish received the same basal diet and flavomycin was added to the basal diet at 4 mg/kg.Compared with the control,supplementation with flavomycin significantly increased average daily weight gain and specific growth rate by 11.11%(P0.05) and 5.38%(P0.05),respectively.Supplementation with flavomycin had a tendency to improve feed conversion ratio,protein efficiency ratio and survivor ratio(P0.05).Addition of flavomycin significantly reduced the total intestinal aerobic bacterial counts.However,the total aerobic bacterial counts of the skin and gill as well as the composition of microflora from the skin,gill and intestine were not affected by flavomycin.Addition of flavomycin improved the phagocytic activity of leukocytes of Nile tilapia(P0.05) and had no significant effect on phagocytic index of leukocytes,lysozyme activity,percentage of erythrocyte C3b receptor and erythocyte active rosette of T lymphocyte of Nile tilapia.Supplementation with flavomycin promoted growth performances and immunity in Nile tilapia.

Abstract:Immunosaccharides such as β-glucans and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) strengthen the host's immune responses. This study examined the influences of three levels of the β-1, 3 glucan-FOS combination on Red tilapia performance. Four diets were prepared: T 0 as a control, while T 0.5 , T 1 , and T 1.5 indicate the addition of β-1, 3 glucan-FOS mixture at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%, respectively. Then, 240 red Tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus ) (weight 6.1 ± 0.07gm) were allocated into four groups, and every group was fed tested diets for 56 days. After the feeding trial, growth parameters, erythrogram profile, liver and kidney function testes, glucose, histopathological analysis, and gene expressions for antioxidants, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase ( GPX ) besides growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 IGF1-related markers were assessed. Red tilapia fed T 0.5 , T 1 , and T 1.5 exhibited consistent growth, survival rate, and homeostasis compared with the control group. Different supplement concentrations displayed varying levels of responses. The hepatorenal biomarkers (alanine transaminase (ALT = SGPT) and aspartate transaminase (AST = SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP = ALK), urea, and creatinine) and glucose showed a significant reduction in the supplemented groups compared with the control, especially in the T 1 and T 1.5 groups. The intestinal morphometric study revealed that fish group fed on T 1 represented the best result, whereas group T 1.5 , followed by group T 0.5, was moderately treated, compared to the control. The real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis displayed up-regulated expression of antioxidant and growth-correlated genes in the T 1.5 groups. After 56 days, the β-1,3 glucan-FOS fed groups also exhibited an increase in survival rates compared to the control when challenged with a pathogenic Vibrio alginolyticus. Current findings suggest that inclusion of β-1,3 glucan-FOS in diets could enhance red tilapia biochemical parameters, growth, and protection against pathogenic V. alginolyticus infection.

Abstract:This investigation attempts to evaluate the effect of diet additives via aqueous or ethanolic herbal extracts from Azadirachta indica leaves on Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Five dietary categories were assigned to the fish: the first category (N1, with no extract) was kept under control conditions; two categories contained aqueous extract (N2 (1.0 g/kg) and N3 (2.0 g/kg); and two categories contained ethanolic extract, N4 (1.0 g/kg) and N5 (2.0 g/kg), with each group being fed for 60 days. After the feeding trial, Aeromonas hydrophila was injected intraperitoneally into fish for 14 days; fish mortality was recorded during this period. The results showed that the fish-fed dietary A. indica significantly improved growth performance and intestinal health (digestive enzymes and intestinal morphology), especially in the N4 and N5 categories. However, N4 and N5 categories demonstrated a significant decrease in AST and ALT activities and an increase in total protein, serum albumin, globulin, growth hormone (GH), leptin hormone (LEP), hemoglobin, white blood cells, and hematocrit (P < 0.05) in comparison with the control category (N1). Compared to the control category, the N4 and N5 categories have revealed a significant reduction in MDA activity and improvements in immunological activities (lysozyme, complement C3, and nitric oxide) and antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, and GPX). Moreover, in tilapia-fed A. indica, the expression of IL-8, IL-1β, and Nf-κb genes was downregulated partially in the N4 and N5 categories than the control category. In contrast, the lysozyme, C3, GPX, and CAT genes were upregulated partially at N4 and N5 compared to the control category. Following the bacterial challenge, fish in the N4 and N5 categories also displayed the lowest fish mortality compared to the control category. The ethanolic extract displayed a more potent resistance against the parasite Cichlidogyrus tilapia in vitro than the aqueous and control categories, partially at 2 g/L. According to these findings, an ethanolic neem extract (2.0 g/kg feed) activates the immune system and antioxidant response in Nile tilapia fingerlings, improving growth and fish resistance to parasitic and bacterial infections.

Abstract:The probiotic potential of a designed bacterial consortia isolated from a competitive exclusion culture originally obtained from the intestinal contents of tilapia juveniles were evaluated on Nile tilapia alevins. The growth performance, intestinal histology, microbiota effects, resistance to Streptococcus agalactiae challenge, and immune response were assessed. In addition, the following treatments were included in a commercial feed: A12+M4+M10 (Lactococcus lactis A12, Priestia megaterium M4, and Priestia sp. M10), M4+M10 (P. megaterium M4, and Priestia sp. M10) and the single bacteria as controls; A12 (L. lactis A12), M4 (P. megaterium M4), M10 (Priestia sp. M10), also a commercial feed without any probiotic addition was included as a control. The results showed that all probiotic treatments improved the growth performance, intestinal histology, and resistance during experimental infection with S. agalactiae in comparison to the control fish. Also, the administration of probiotics resulted in the modulation of genes associated with the innate and adaptive immune systems that were non-dependent on microbial colonization. Surprisingly, L. lactis A12 alone induced benefits in fish compared to the microbial consortia, showing the highest increase in growth rate, survival during experimental infection with S. agalactiae, increased intestinal fold length, and the number of differentially expressed genes. Lastly, we conclude that a competitive exclusion culture is a reliable source of probiotics, and monostrain L. lactis A12 has comparable or even greater probiotic potential than the bacterial consortia.

Abstract:The present study was aimed to compare and evaluate the impacts of supplemented diets with different yeast hydrolysate (YH) levels on growth performance, body composition, hematological characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activities, and non-specific immunity (intestinal cytokines) of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Three isonitrogenous (protein, 33%) and isolipidic (lipid, 6%) experimental diets supplemented graded levels of YH (0% for control; 1% and 3% as tested diets) were fed to juvenile Nile tilapia. A total of 240 fish with initial body weight averaging 3.5 ± 0.02 g were randomly divided into three groups with four replicates per group and 20 fish for each replicate. For apparent satiation, the fish were fed twice daily during eight weeks. The results showed no significant difference in survival among all treatments. The fish fed the diet containing 1% yeast hydrolysate had significantly elevated weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to the control group and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR). The fish fed 1% and 3% YH showed higher glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activity and a significantly lower malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the liver than the control group, indicating enhancement of the anti-oxidant status. Serum lysozyme activity was significantly increased in the diet having 1% and 3% yeast hydrolysate supplementation groups, suggesting an improvement influence on the non-specific immune response. The expression of IL-1β, IL-10, TNF-α, TGF-β2, ALP and TLR2 was significantly elevated in fish fed the diet containing 1% YH. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 1% yeast hydrolysate improves growth performance, and feed utilization enhances the antioxidant status and exerts an adequate stimulus on the non-specific immunity (intestinal cytokines) of Nile tilapia.

Effects of Zinc Oxide Supported on Zeolite on Growth Performance, Intestinal Barrier Function and Digestive Enzyme Activities of Nile Tilapia

Abstract:A total of 720 Nile tilapia fingerlings were allocated to four treatments and used to investigate the effects of zinc oxide supported on zeolite (Z-ZnO) on growth performance and intestinal function. The basal diet (control) was not supplemented with zinc and contained 60 mg Zn kg(-1). The other three groups were added 30 mg Zn kg(-1) to the basal diet, in which zinc was supplemented as Z-ZnO, Z + ZnO (mixture of zeolite and ZnO) or ZnSO4, respectively. As compared to the control, supplemental Z-ZnO improved (P < 0.05) specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio (PER) and survivor ratio; increased (P < 0.05) villus-height-to-crypt-depth ratio and transepithelial electrical resistance; decreased (P < 0.05) mucosal-to-serosal flux of dextran 4 kDa; and improved (P < 0.05) intestinal activities of protease, amylase, lipase and alkaline phosphatase. Fish fed with Z-ZnO had higher (P < 0.05) specific growth rate and PER, and better intestinal barrier function than those fed with ZnSO4 or Z + ZnO. The zinc concentrations in whole body and vertebrae were not affected by dietary treatments. The results indicated that Z-ZnO improved intestinal morphology, barrier function and digestive enzyme activities. Such changes in intestinal health in the presence of Z-ZnO might contribute to its improvement in growth performance.

Abstract:Sutili, Fernando Jonas ; Battisti, Eduardo Kelm ; Gressler, Luciane Tourem ; Kreutz, Luiz Carlos ; A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the impact of dietary β-glucan in combination with citral and eugenol on the growth, whole body composition, and innate immunity of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) weighing 9.16 g, under cold suboptimal temperatures (20oC). The treatments included a control (Co); β-glucan (G) at 1.0 g/kg/diet; citral and eugenol (CE) at 0.5 g/kg each; and a combination of β-glucan, citral, and eugenol (GCE) at the same concentrations (1.0, 0.5 and 0.5 g/kg, respectively). Although no significant differences were observed in growth parameters post-trial, proximate analysis indicated an increase in body protein and a decrease in body fat content in the GCE group compared to the Co and G groups, respectively. Enhanced respiratory burst activity of blood leukocytes and myeloperoxidase activity were recorded in the GCE group, indicating improved innate immune responses. Serum complement hemolytic activity was significantly higher in the G group, with no additional benefits from the CE or GCE treatments. Furthermore, the G and GCE groups displayed increased serum lysozyme activity when compared to the control. These findings suggest that the combination (GCE) of these feed additives may offer a beneficial strategy for promoting health in tilapia reared under stressful conditions.

Abstract:The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is one of the commonest probiotics incorporated in aquafeeds. An 84-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of varying dietary inclusions of S. cerevisiae, 0% (control), 3% (YF3), 5% (YF5), and 7% (YF7), on growth, stress tolerance, and disease resistance in juvenile (body mass ~ 21 g) Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were randomly distributed in groups of 20 into 12 1-m3 hapas and fed isoenergetic (~ 17 kJ g−1 gross energy) and isonitrogenous (~ 300 g kg−1 crude protein) diets at 3% of their bulk weight daily. Specific growth rates were significantly higher for the yeast-fed fish (0.77–0.78% day−1) than for the control fish (0.60% day−1) and resulted in significantly higher mean final weights for the yeast-treated groups. Protein and lipid retention efficiencies were also significantly higher in the yeast-fed fish than in the control group. In subsequent stress challenge trials, the yeast-fed fish had greater tolerance to acute heat as well as hypoxia exposure than the control fish. Survival rates of the yeast-treated groups following sudden exposure to elevated water temperature (40 °C) ranged from 82.5 to 100% compared to 15% for the control. Mean survival rates following a 24-h hypoxia exposure were also generally significantly higher for the yeast-fed fish. The probiotic groups recorded a relative percent survival (RPS) of 75% after a 14-day Aeromonas hydrophila infection challenge. The results of this study indicate that S. cerevisiae as an additive in Nile tilapia diets has beneficial impacts on growth, stress tolerance, and disease resistance.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a probiotic bacterium, Enterococcus faecium ZJ4 on growth performances and immune responses of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The tilapias were treated with E. faecium ZJ4 at a final concentration of 1 × 107 cfu ml− 1 in aquaria water every 4 days. Six aquaria with three replicates for treated and controls were used. After 40 days, the tilapias supplemented with the probiotic showed significantly better final weight and daily weight gain (DWG) than those fed the basal diet (Control) (P < 0.05). There was no remarkable difference (P > 0.05) in the total serum protein, albumin content, globulin concentration and A/G ratio between the treated and control tilapias. The result of lysozyme activity assay was similar to these biochemical indexes. However, the complement component 3 content, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and the respiratory burst activity of blood phagocytes were higher (P < 0.05) in E. faecium treated tilapias (trial 1) than the controls.
Dietary Pediastrum boryanum microalgal extract improves growth, enhances immunity, and regulates immune-related genes in Nile tilapia

Abstract:Background: Identifying alternative sustainable feed sources with high nutritional values is crucial for the future of environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. In this regard, microalgae have been proven to have positive effects on fish health, which overwhelmed our interest in this study. Methods: Pediastrum boryanum (P. boryanum) was incorporated into Nile tilapia feed at concentrations of 0, 0.75, and 1.5 mg/kg, as control, PbExt0.75, and PbExt1.5 groups to assess its effects on growth and biochemical indices, oxidant/antioxidant activities, immune and stress-related gene expression, and intestinal morphology. Results: After 8 weeks, fish fed P. boryanum supplemented feed exhibited significant increases in final weight, length, condition factor, body weight gain, and specific growth rate, while the spleen-somatic index (SSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) showed no significant differences compared to the control group. Dietary P. boryanum supplementation also enhanced IgM levels and lysozyme activity, along with no marked effect on markers of liver function enzymes (alanine aminotransferase/ALT and aspartate aminotransferase/AST) or protein status (total protein and albumin). Furthermore, P. boryanum addition increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH) enzymes, highlighting its antioxidant potential, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations showed no significant differences among the groups. Gene expression analysis revealed that tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) expression notably increased in groups fed P. boryanum containing feed, while no significant difference was observed in hepatic Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA expression. Histopathological examination revealed no adverse effects of P. boryanum supplementation on the liver, spleen, or intestinal tissues. Villous height and villous surface area were notably increased in the high P. boryanum supplementation group, suggesting improved intestinal integrity and nutrient absorption. Conclusion: Dietary P. boryanum supplementation can potentially improve growth performance, immune response, antioxidant status, and intestinal health of Nile tilapia, making it a promising candidate for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract:The aquaculture industry has been growing rapidly over the past few decades to meet future animal protein demands. However, intensive aquaculture industry faces challenges such as growth abnormalities, high mortality rates, water quality and intestinal health deterioration. Administering probiotics can serve as a nutritional strategy to enhance the immune system and growth performance of fish influxes of gut microbiota. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of two dietary probiotic strains L . mesenteroides and L . lactis on the growth performance, immunity, and gut microbiota of Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ). Fish were fed with basal and experimental diet supplemented by both L . mesenteroides and L . lactis bacteria at 10 6 cell/g for 8 weeks. Feeding a combination of L . mesenteroides and L . lactis resulted in significant improvements in feed utilization parameters (PER and FER) (P < 0.001), alternative complement pathway activity, intestinal lactic acid bacteria count (P < 0.012), mucus secretion (P < 0.002) and peroxidase activity (P < 0.001) compared to the control groups. Serum lysozyme activity also exhibited a significant increase in the L . mesenteroides and L . lactis dietary group (P < 0.011) compared to the control and single probiotic supplemented diet groups. Furthermore, Nile tilapia fed the L . mesenteroides and L . lactis supplemented diet showed enhanced growth performance metrics (weight gain, final weight and specific growth rate) compared to those fed control and single probiotic supplemented diets (P < 0.022). Additionally, superoxide dismutase activity was significantly elevated in the L . mesenteroides and L . lactis supplemented diet groups compared to the control and single L . mesenteroides supplemented diet groups (P < 0.017). These findings strongly indicate that a dietary combination of L . mesenteroides and L . lactis probiotics could function as a beneficial immunostimulant feed supplement in Nile tilapia aquaculture.
