Abstract:Smart textile sensors have attracted increasing interest in the domain of wearable computing for human motion monitoring. Previous studies have shown that textile sensor layout has a major impact on the effectiveness and performance of wearable prototypes. However, it is still a trick and time-consuming issue to determine textile sensor layout in a quantitative approach as it involves figuring out the number, placement, and even orientations of sensors, yet there is no streamlined digital platform or tool specifically addressing this issue. In this paper, we introduce LayTex, a digital tool capable of generating layout proposals for personalized scenarios, which aims at facilitating designers and researchers to construct prototypes efficiently. The preliminary evaluation with designers on smart garments for scoliosis indicates that LayTex has great potential to lower the barriers and simplify the process of textile prototype construction.
Risk factors for peptic ulcer bleeding in terms of Helicobacter pylori, NSAIDs, and antiplatelet agents

Abstract:Abstract Objectives. The role of the Helicobacter pylori, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antiplatelet agents in the risk of peptic ulcer bleeding has not yet been established. This study was performed to identify the risk factors for peptic ulcer bleeding compared with non-bleeding peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Material and methods. A total of 475 patients, 265 with bleeding PUD and 210 with non-bleeding PUD were consecutively recruited. H. pylori status was determined by histology, rapid urease test, and culture. Exposure to NSAIDs, aspirin, and antiplatelet agents (clopidogrel and ticlopidine) within 4 weeks was obtained. Results. Compared with non-bleeding PUD, bleeding PUD had a higher proportion of male gender and current smoking, alcohol drinking, history of aspirin/antiplatelet use, and history of PUD. Whereas the proportion of H. pylori infection and history of H. pylori eradication in bleeding PUD were significantly lower than that in non-bleeding PUD. In multivariate analysis, male gender (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.10–2.89), drinking alcohol (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.29–3.14), aspirin/antiplatelet use (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.45–3.82), and history of PUD (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.36–4.46) remained independent risk factors for bleeding PUD. When H. pylori status and aspirin/antiplatelet agent use were combined, highest risk of bleeding peptic ulcers was found among H. pylori-negative patients with a history of aspirin/antiplatelet agent use (OR 3.03 95% CI 1.48–6.18) compared with H. pylori-positive patients with no history of aspirin/antiplatelet agent use. Conclusions. Patients with H. pylori-negative peptic ulcers who continuously took aspirin or antiplatelet agents had the highest peptic ulcer bleeding risk.

Abstract:Textile-based pressure sensors with good comfortness and breathability can be easily integrated into garments for smart wearables. Nevertheless, scalable construction of all textile-based pressure sensors with good mechanical robustness and desirable sensor performance still remains a great challenge. Here, a facile, low-cost, and scalable approach is proposed to fabricate a new paradigm of all textile-based and mechanically robust pressure sensors. These pressure sensors consist of a top elastic piezoresistive sensing fabric and a bottom textile-based robust interdigital electrodes. The top piezoresistive sensing fabric is fabricated by controllably depositing robust polyurethane/carbon nanotubes composites on a highly elastic Venetian fabric through electrostatic layer-by -layer assembly. The bottom interdigital electrodes are prepared by screen printing of an elastic and robust carbon ink on a polyester fabric. Notably, the conductive networks in both of the piezoresistive sensing layer and the bottom electrodes are firmly embedded in elastomer substrates rather than directly attached onto the fabric surface, endowing the pressure sensors with superior mechanical robustness. The as-fabricated all textile-based pressure sensors exhibit high sensitivity (3.42 kpa(-1)), fast response/recovery time (32 ms/4 ms), good cycling stability (10 000 cycles), superior robustness against mechanical bending (10 000 cycles) and chemical washing. As demonstrations, the pressure sensors are integrated into diverse garments for wireless and real-time moni-toring of various human physiological activities, including joint bending, muscle activity, object grasping, etc. This proposed simple but efficient approach for fabricating all textile-based pressure sensors with superior robustness opens up new opportunities for the further development of smart garments and wearable devices.

Abstract:We present IntelliTex, a low-cost and highly accessible double-coating fabrication method for washable and reusable functional textiles with customized input functionalities. Specifcally, of-the-shelf textiles are firstly coated with conductive carbon black using pen ink, which endows textiles with rich sensing capabilities, such as pressure, stretch, slide, and temperature. Secondly, textiles are coated with polyurethane to enhance the sensing stability over wash cycles for good reusability. To support user customization, we enrich the design space of double-coating by exploring various coating methods and diverse textiles to be coated. We further contribute a comprehensive library of input components and an online document to make our approach accessible to novice users. Finally, five application examples and a user study showcase the versatile functionalities and user accessibility of our method, with which we hope to support designers, makers, and researchers to easily create functional textiles ready to use in everyday life.

Abstract:Textile‐based sensors have been widely studied for wearable monitoring. The sensor systems demand a large sensing area, flexibility, and scalable fabrication method. Herein, single‐layer piezoresistive sensors are developed by a machine stitching technique using metallic and Graphene Nano Platelets (GNPs) coated conductive threads and fabrics. The pressure‐sensing mechanism is based on measuring the electrical resistance due to the change in the contact area between the conductive thread and fabric as pressure on the sensor varies. The single‐layer sensor design provides flexibility and overcomes the physical drift of the sensor during human activities, which enhances wearability and performance. The coated textiles were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier‐Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Physical and electromechanical tests were performed on the sensors to evaluate their wearability and sensing performance. The sensors exhibited a wide working range of up to 100 kPa and good sensitivity with excellent durability against repeated mechanical deformations. The application potential of the sensors in real‐time monitoring was demonstrated by embedding them into clothing as a wearable device. Moreover, the effectiveness of the sensors was tested for posture correction. This paper suggests a novel technique to fabricate durable, flexible and highly efficient pressure sensors for smart wearable applications. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The development of comfortable and lightweight wearable devices is an emerging technological goal in human-computer interaction. Conductive textiles attract a great deal of interest as versatile materials for wearable devices. It can naturally integrate into our daily clothing, making wearable devices more comfortable and convenient. However, developing all-textile wearable devices remains an important challenge. And the wiring of wearable devices in practical applications is also a thorny issue. In this study, a novel wearable smart keyboard is proposed. Benefit from the ingenious structural design of double-faced effect functional textiles and 3D spacer textiles, the smart keyboard achieves all-textile structure and the wires can also be hidden inside the 3D spacer textile. The smart keyboard is stretchable, breathable, washable and can be integrated with daily clothing by sewing. In addition to the functions of traditional keyboards, smart keyboards also have the ability to detect tapping force which lays the foundation for future intelligent applications, such as tracking the tapping force of typewriting to enhance security.The application examples of integrating the smart keyboard into lab-coat for typewriting are demonstrated. This study shows that the novel smart keyboard has great potential in the fields of wearable devices and human-computer interface.
Full-Textile Human Motion Detection Systems Integrated by Facile Weaving with Hierarchical Core–Shell Piezoresistive Yarns

Abstract:The tremendous progress of the wearable intelligent system has brought an urgent demand for flexible pressure sensors, especially for those possessing high sensing performances, simple manufacture technology, and efficient integration. In this work, hierarchical core-shell piezoresistive yarns (HCPYs), which contain internal silver-plated nylon electrodes and surface microporous structured carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) sensing layer, are designed and manufactured via facile wet-spinning accompanied by a water vapor coagulating bath. The obtained HCPY can either be inserted into traditional textiles to assemble a single-pressure sensor, or be woven into a textile-based flexible pressure sensors array with expected size and resolution, without compromising their comfort, breathability, and three-dimensional (3D) conformability. Simultaneously, to further enhance the sensing performance, the surface microporous structures of HCPYs are optimized by altering the treatment humidity and exposure time during the process of water vapor-induced phase separation. The wearable pressure sensors assembled by the optimal HCPY achieved a high sensitivity up to 84.5 N<sup>-1</sup>, a good durability over 5000-cycle tests, a fast response time of 2.1 ms, and a recovery time of 2.4 ms. Moreover, the wearable pressure sensors have been successfully used to monitor physical signals and human motions. The textile-based flexible pressure sensors array has also been seamlessly integrated with sportswear to detect movements of the elbow joint and map spatial pressure distribution, which makes HCPY a promising candidate for constructing next-generation wearable electronics.

Abstract:The crystal structure of the complex formed between eglin c, an elastase inhibitor from the medical leech, and subtilisin Carlsberg has been determined at 1.2 A resolution by a combination of Patterson search methods and isomorphous replacement techniques. The structure has been refined to a crystallographic R‐value of 0.18 (8‐1.2 A). Eglin consists of a four‐stranded beta‐sheet with an alpha‐helical segment and the protease‐binding loop fixed on opposite sides. This loop, which contains the reactive site Leu45I‐‐Asp46I, is mainly held in its conformation by unique electrostatic/hydrogen bond interactions of Thr44I and Asp46I with the side chains of Arg53I and Arg51I which protrude from the hydrophobic core of the molecule. The conformation around the reactive site is similar to that found in other proteinase inhibitors. The nine residues of the binding loop Gly40I‐‐Arg48I are involved in direct contacts with subtilisin. In this interaction, eglin segment Pro42I‐‐Thr44I forms a three‐stranded anti‐parallel beta‐sheet with subtilisin segments Gly100‐‐Gly102 and Ser125‐‐Gly127. The reactive site peptide bond of eglin is intact, and Ser221 OG of the enzyme is 2.81 A apart from the carbonyl carbon.

Abstract:Wearable electrical textiles are of great value for future personalized healthcare applications. Herein, we report a 3-D meshed textile pressure sensor, using a facile dip coating strategy, that combing the sensitive 2-D Ti3C2Tx MXene nanolayer with woven textile fibers. Based on the sensitive 3-D cross-connected conductive network, the textile sensor achieves simultaneously a high sensitivity of up to 81.9 kPa−1 and a fast response time of 30 ms in a wide pressure detection range (0–19 kPa) as well as prominent durability of more than 5000 cycles. Benefiting from superior performances, the textile sensor can be applied for real-time human physiological signals monitoring from pulse waves to human joint motion. This work represents a solid step toward personalized healthcare and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:The next generation of electronics will include human‐interactive flexible sensor sheets to monitor health. One approach is to realize practical macroscale low‐cost sensor arrays to monitor pressure distribution and health conditions without directly attaching a device onto the body. However, practical requirements such as reliability, scalability, and washability are not often discussed as most studies focus on the sensing sensitivity and validations. This study demonstrates an all textile‐based tactile force sensor sheet that covers the above requirements. By considering the device design and materials, high reliability/repeatability (≈250 000 cycles at ≈5 kPa) and washability are realized. These are important factors for practical applications for human‐interactive macroscale sensor sheets. In addition to the fundamental characteristics, pressure distribution mapping and respiration rate monitoring are confirmed by placing the sensor sheets on a bed, chair, and floor. Textile‐based tactile force sensor sheets along with a systematic analysis of sensitivity, tenability, reliability, and washability are demonstrated for human‐interactive condition monitoring. Human conditions based on the pressure distribution on a chair or footprint can be monitored in addition to the detection of respiration during sleep without attaching the sensor on the body directly.

Abstract:A self‐powered sensing network is built into primary textiles, providing an ideal platform for spatial pressure and shear motion distribution recognition. The device opens new opportunities for the development of wearable electronics in next‐generation smart textiles and future intelligent society, enabling techniques to integrate sensor systems comfortably into primary clothing, shoes, carpet, etc. The growing demand for sustained self‐powered devices with multifunctional sensing networks is one of the main challenges for smart textiles, which are the critical elements for the future Internet of Things (IoT) and Point of Care (POC). Here, cellulose‐based smart textile is integrated with dynamic Schottky diode (DSD) to generate sustained power source (current density of 8.9 mA m−2) for self‐powered built‐in sensing network. In response to normal and shear motions, a pressure sensor with a sensitivity of 0.12 KPa−1 and an impact sensor are demonstrated, respectively. The woven structure of the textile contributes to signal amplification, which can also form a matrix of sensing elements for distributed sensing. The proposed strategy of fabricating self‐powered and multifunctional sensing networks with smart textiles shows tremendous potential for future intelligent society.

A Wearable and Highly Sensitive Textile-based Pressure Sensor with Ti3C2Tx Nanosheets

Abstract:Development of low-cost, efficient, flexible and highly sensitive pressure sensors that can perceive and respond to environmental stimuli have become indispensable for wearable electronics. Herein, the Ti3C2Tx-textile based pressure sensor was successfully fabricated with the help of common fabric substrates by using simple and effective dipping-drying method. The Ti3C2Tx Nanosheets prepared by wet-chemical solution display excellent hydrophilicity, high specific surface area, metallic conductivity and controllable surface groups properties, which are extremely suitable in construction of low-cost and high-performance textile-based pressure sensors. And the Ti3C2Tx-textile based pressure sensor achieves high sensitivity (19.78 kPa(-1)), low detection limit (219 mN), fast response (similar to 149 ms) and well stability (more than 7000). With these merits, the Ti3C2Tx-textile based sensor is demonstrated to be able to recognize the human physiological signals, such as finger bending, tapping, hand movements and so on. Furthermore, the textile sensor also can be capable to measure pressure distribution and distinguish the subtle strain, which demonstrates great potential in both industrial and biomedical applications. Abstract:This study presents a novel approach for touch sensing using semi-elastic textile surfaces that does not require the placement of additional sensors in the sensing area, instead relying on sensors located on the border of the textile. The proposed approach is demonstrated through experiments involving an elastic Jersey fabric and a variety of machine-learning models. The performance of one particular border-based sensor design is evaluated in depth. By using visual markers, the best-performing visual sensor arrangement predicts a single touch point with a mean squared error of 1.36 mm on an area of 125mm by 125mm. We built a textile only prototype that is able to classify touch at three indent levels (0, 15, and 20 mm) with an accuracy of 82.85%. Our results suggest that this approach has potential applications in wearable technology and smart textiles, making it a promising avenue for further exploration in these fields.

Abstract:An all‐organic textile sensor capable of discriminately sensing pressure, proximity, and temperature stimuli is developed. Outstanding washability and breathability are demonstrated. By combining with the deep‐learning technique, an all‐textile sensing system is established to recognize object shape, contactless trajectory, and even environmental temperature, showing a promising identification ability for complex information. Smart textile for sensor is identified as a superior platform with greatly improved convenience and comfort for wearable bioelectronics. However, most reported textile‐based sensors cannot fully demonstrate the inherent advantages of textiles, such as comfortability, breathability, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness, mainly due to the intrinsic limitation of non‐textile or inorganic components. Here, an all‐textile, all‐organic, washable, and breathable sensor with discriminable pressure, proximity, and temperature sensing function is first reported. Multiple sensing functions and outstanding washability are demonstrated. The all‐textile sensor can also be seamlessly integrated into diverse types of fabrics to realize wide‐range sensing of human activities and noncontact stimuli without sacrificing biocompatibility and comfortability. Additionally, by combining with the deep‐learning technique, an all‐textile sensing system is established to recognize object shape, contactless trajectory, and even environmental temperature. These results open a new avenue for designing low‐cost, washable, comfortable, and biocompatible green textile electronics, providing a meaningful guideline in intelligent textiles.

Abstract:High-performance pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention recently due to their promising applications in touch displays, wearable electronics, human-machine interfaces, and real-time physiological signal perception. However, the functionality of a sensor is generally incompatible with simple fabrication strategies. Therefore, strategies that are less equipment-intensive and less expensive are required for enhancing the sensor performance. Here, we propose a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor based on MXene-textile prepared by a facile dip-coating process. Benefiting from the excellent electrical properties of MXene and the abundant wavy surface of cotton textile, this pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (12.095 kPa(-1) for the range 29-40 kPa and 3.844 kPa(-1) for the range less than 29 kPa) with a rapid response time of 26 ms, and excellent cycling stability (5600 cycles). The real-time monitoring of human physiological signals such as wrist pulse, voice detection, and finger movements can be achieved by using this MXene-textile sensor. In addition, sensory arrays were successfully applied in the pressure distribution mapping of a key, demonstrating that the pressure sensor can be used as part of wearable devices and human-machine interfaces to sense pressure.
Distributed Sensing Along Fibres for Smart Clothing

Abstract:Textile sensors transform our everyday clothing into a means to track movement and bio-signals in a completely unobtrusive way. One major hindrance to the adoption of "smart" clothing is the difficulty encountered with connections and space when scaling up the number of sensors. There is a lack of research addressing a key limitation in wearable electronics: connections between rigid and textile elements are often unreliable and they require interfacing sensors in a way incompatible with textile mass production methods. We introduce a prototype garment, compact readout circuit, and algorithm to measure localized strain along multiple regions of a fibre. We employ a helical auxetic yarn sensor with tunable sensitivity along its length to selectively respond to strain signals. We demonstrate distributed sensing in clothing, monitoring arm joint angles from a single continuous fibre. Compared to optical motion capture, we achieve around 5° error in reconstructing shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint angles.

Abstract:Utilization of textile's triboelectric effect to realize the perception of pressure is of great interest for self-powered wearable electronics that integrate seamlessly with smart fabrics. However, the challenges associated with rational material/device designs based on conventional textile structures and the lack of understanding of the mechanical circumstances experienced by textile devices hamper the further advancement of this technology. Here, textile pressure sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with machine washability and excellent breathability are manufactured by using machines to interlace robust Cu-coated polyacrylonitrile (Cu-PAN) yarns and parylene coated Cu-PAN (parylene-Cu-PAN) yarns via multiple textile industry compatible technologies for the first time, simultaneously achieving devices with stitched, woven, and knitted structures. TENG-based pressure sensors with different textile structures are investigated under as-fabricated conditions and after machine washing, and a relation is proposed between textile structure and the key characteristics of the sensors. The material/device designs, mechanical circumstances, manufacturing methods, etc., will affect the sensitivity, linearity, saturation trend and washability of the obtained sensors. Finally, a smart textile glove with stitched pressure sensors is made to demonstrate grip posture detection in various circumstances.
Autism in Down's syndrome: family history correlates.

Abstract:Although the association of autism with Down's syndrome is said to be uncommon, several reports have described the co-occurrence of the two disorders. This report describes three additional cases of Down's syndrome with autism. In all the patients, a history suggestive of the broader phenotype of autism was obtained in parents. This suggests that familial factors specific to autism may play an important role even when autism complicates a known medical condition such as Down's syndrome.

Abstract:The application of flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors based on textiles in wearable electronics for health monitoring and motion tracking is being explored. Textiles are inherently strain-sensitive and functional, offering wear-resistance, comfort, and versatility. However, their application potential can be greatly enhanced with improvements in precision, mechanical reliability, and long-term stability. This study developed a three-dimensional fabric piezoresistive sensor with integrated electrodes and a piezoresistive layer to address these challenges. Utilizing low preparation costs and simple fabrication processes, the sensor leveraged the synergistic effects of multiple layers of contact between fibers, yarns, and fabrics in a three-dimensional weaving structure, achieving ultra-high sensitivities of 76.48 kPa −1 at 0–5 kPa and 63.78 kPa −1 at 5–50 kPa. The sensor's operation mechanism under various working conditions was validated using COMSOL simulations. The sensor exhibits rapid response and recovery times (12/13 ms) and high stability (> 500 loading and unloading cycles). Compared to previous efforts, this sensor offers greater integration and functionality, capable of detecting breathing and a variety of limb movements. With ongoing technological advancements, flexible textile-based sensors are well-positioned to monitor individuals' physiological parameters, such as heart rate, breathing, and body temperature. These sensors could be used in various fields, including aerospace, military, environmental monitoring, and healthcare, and are expected to play an increasingly critical role in future strategic initiatives.
