Abstract:Treatment of municipal wastewater results worldwide in the production of large amounts of sewage sludge. The major part of the dry matter content of this sludge consists of nontoxic organic compounds, in general a combination of primary sludge and secondary (microbiological) sludge. The sludge also contains a substantial amount of inorganic material and a small amount of toxic components. There are many sludge-management options in which production of energy (heat, electricity, or biofuel) is one of the key treatment steps. The most important options are anaerobic digestion, co-digestion, incineration in combination with energy recovery, co-incineration in coal-fired power plants, co-incineration in combination with organic waste focused on energy recovery, use as an energy source in the production of cement or building materials, pyrolysis, gasification, supercritical (wet) oxidation, hydrolysis at high temperature, production of hydrogen, acetone, butanol, or ethanol, and direct generation of electrical energy by means of specific micro-organisms. Incineration and co-incineration with energy recovery and use of sewage sludge in the production of Portland cement are applied on a large scale. In these processes, the toxic organics are destructed and the heavy metals are immobilized in the ash or cement. The energy efficiency of these processes strongly depends upon the dewatering and drying step. It is expected that these applications will strongly increase in the future. Supercritical wet oxidation is a promising innovative technology but is still in the development stage. With the exception of biogas production, the other biological methods to produce energy are still in the initial research phase. Production of biogas from sewage sludge is already applied worldwide on small, medium, and large scales. With this process, a substantial experience exists and it is expected that this application is getting more and more attention. Besides the increasing focus on the recovery and reuse of energy, inorganics, and phosphorous, there is also an increasing focus to solve completely the problem of the toxic organics and inorganic compounds in sludge. In the assessment and selection of options for energy recovery by means of biological methods, this aspect has to be taken into account.

Abstract:Sewage sludge to energy conversion is a sustainable waste management technique and a means of militating against the environmental concerns associated with its disposal. Amongst the various conversion technologies, anaerobic digestion and gasification have been identified as the two most promising. Therefore, this study is focused on a detailed evaluation of the anaerobic digestion and gasification of sewage sludge for energy production. Moreover, the key challenges hindering both technologies are discussed, as well as the practical measures for addressing them. The applicable pretreatment measures for efficient transformation into valuable energy vectors were further evaluated. Specifically, the study evaluated various properties of sewage sludge in relation to gasification and anaerobic digestion. The findings showed that a high ash content in sewage sludge results in sintering and agglomeration, while a high moisture content promotes tar formation, which has been identified as one of the key limitations of sewage sludge gasification. More importantly, the application of pretreatment has been shown to have some beneficial features in promoting organic matter decomposition/degradation, thereby enhancing biogas as well as syngas production. However, this has additional energy requirements and operational costs, particularly for thermal and mechanical methods.

Abstract:Treatment and disposal of municipal sewage sludge is one of the hot issues in recent years, and the potential utilization of sludge as energy is gradually attracting the attention of researchers. On the basis of introduction of sludge composition and properties,the main technologies and methods of utilization of sludge as energy were summarized,including anaerobic digestion,pyrolysis,gasification, combustion,microbial fuel cells and so on. In this paper each technology or method was discussed in the aspects of its principle,process,products and pollution control. The process of combustion and co-combustion can provide a way to realize energy conversion directly and has been promoted and applied nowadays. But it has the disadvantages of high costs and subsequent problems such as pollution gases and ash disposal during the process. Secondary pollution such as pollution gas emission can be avoided using gasification and pyrolysis,but the process and equipment are relatively complicated,preventing their industrial applications. Anaerobic digestion and microbial fuel cell technologies can achieve not only sludge reduction,but also energy production through the action of microorganisms,and they seem to be the likely direction of utilizing sludge as energy.
Environmental and Economic Life Cycle Assessment of Energy Recovery from Sewage Sludge Through Different Anaerobic Digestion Pathways

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is recognized as a good and promising method for energy recovery from sewage sludge, but it is difficult to select a suitable process from various conventional and emerging technical options. In this study, five processes including mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion (CAD and TAD), mesophilic and thermophilic high-solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD and THSAD) and anaerobic digestion with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THPAD) are compared using life cycle environmental and economic assessment. Particularly, the uncertainty derived from variable sludge organic content and biogas production is analyzed. The results showed that energy output should be the most sensitive factor determining the assessment results. For common high-organic-content sludge, thermophilic processes like THSAD and TAD lead to the least environmental impact while THSAD and THPAD exhibit the best economic performance. Compare with CAD, THSAD have 44% less environmental impact and 118% higher net present value (NPV) for a project with treatment capability of 100 t dry solids per day. However, for low,organic-content sludge, high-solids processes like THSAD and HSAD are much better than the others mainly owing to their less consumption of thermal energy. Using this kind of feed sludge, THSAD can bring 40% less environmental burden and 31% more NPV than CAD. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Purpose Urbanization and industrialization in China has resulted in a dramatic increase in the volume of wastewater and sewage sludge produced from wastewater treatment plants. Problems associated with sewage sludge have attracted increasing attention from the public and urban planners. How to manage sludge in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the critical issues that modern societies are facing. Methods Sludge treatment systems consist of thickening, dewatering, and several different alternative main treatments (anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, drying, composting, and incineration). Agricultural application, landfill, and incineration are the principal disposal methods for sewage sludge in China. However, sewage sludge disposal in the future should focus on resource recovery, reducing environmental impacts and saving economic costs. Results The reuse of biosolids in all scenarios can be environmentally beneficial and cost-effective. Anaerobic digestion followed by land application is the preferable options due to low economic and energy costs and material reuse. Conclusion It is necessary to formulate a standard suitable for the utilization of sewage sludge in China.

Abstract:Global demand for freshwater is rapidly escalating. It is highly essential to keep pace with the necessities of the increasing population. The effluents of wastewater are gradually identified as a reservoir of resources for energy generation and economic boom. Henceforth, most wastewater and sludge have great potential for reuse and recycling. The re-utilization and valorization of wastewater and sludge contribute to accomplishing sustainable development goals, combating water scarcity, and alleviating adverse environmental impacts of wastewater on the environmental components. The present article highlights the most novel approaches for wastewater treatment for the waste valorization of different industrial origins and the generation of value-added products and recovery of biopolymers, vitamins, enzymes, dyes, pigments, and phenolic compounds. We highlighted the life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis. In addition, we have addressed a critical overview of the barriers to the large-scale application of resource recovery strategies and economic, environmental, and social concerns associated with using waste-derived products.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is one of the most promising methods for reducing sewage sludge and recovering energy. In the present study, a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of sewage sludge anaerobic digestion processes with different digestate treatments, including mesophilic anaerobic digestion with digestate landfilling (CAD-1) and digestate incineration (CAD-2), thermophilic anaerobic digestion combined with thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment with digestate land use (THPAD-1), and digestate incineration (THPAD-2), was performed to evaluate their environmental, resource, economic, and comprehensive performances using the SimaPro software. Environmental impact analysis revealed marine ecotoxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, and human carcinogenic toxicity as the most obvious impacts, resulting in the most significant damage to human health. Resource analysis indicated that anaerobic digestion combined with cogeneration and digestate incineration is advantageous to high energy recovery, but digestate incineration is disadvantageous to economic performance because of increased investment costs. Comparison of the four processes revealed that THPAD-2 results in the largest environmental damage, whereas CAD-1 has the smallest load. Meanwhile, THPAD-2 and THPAD-1 exhibit the best resource performance and net economic benefit, respectively. The comprehensive evaluation indices revealed that THPAD-1 and CAD-2 show better comprehensive performance. And the deep drying incineration process exhibited better comprehensive performance than sewage sludge anaerobic digestion processes.

Abstract:In this study, different management strategies for sewage sludge disposal were evaluated associated with environmental, energy, and economic impact, using life cycle assessment (LCA), cumulative energy demand (CED) and life cycle costing (LCC) approaches. Four scenarios, including mono-incineration, co-incineration in municipal solid wastes (MSW) incineration plant, co-incineration in coal-fired power plant and co-incineration in cement kiln, were assessed. The environmental burdens generated from the sludge incineration contributed primarily to the global warming, followed by eutrophication, marine aquatic ecotoxicity, and human toxicity potential across the four scenarios. Furthermore, mono-incineration scenario appeared to be the most environmentally unfriendly, energy and economy intensive alternative, with the LCA, CED and LCC value of 5.41E-09, 1736 MJ and 1.84 million CNY, respectively. By contrast, co-incineration in cement kiln exhibited the lowest CED (368 MJ), LCC (0.59 million CNY), and environmental burdens (1.02E-09). In addition, the sensitivity analysis indicated that four scenarios were sensitive to the changes in the electricity efficiency and the moisture content contained in sewage sludge, suggesting that it was of great significance to enhance the efficiency of sludge dewatering and thermal drying The findings of this study can provide scientific reference for selecting the optimal strategies for the most environmentally and economically friendly sewage sludge management with optimum energy efficiency.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is the only energy-positive technology widely used in wastewater treatment. Full-scale data prove that the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge can produce biogas that covers a substantial amount of the energy consumption of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). In this paper, we discuss possibilities for improving the digestion efficiency and biogas production from sewage sludge. Typical specific energy consumptions of municipal WWTPs per population equivalent are compared with the potential specific production of biogas to find the required/optimal digestion efficiency. Examples of technological measures to achieve such efficiency are presented. Our findings show that even a municipal WWTP with secondary biological treatment located in a moderate climate can come close to energy self-sufficiency. However, they also show that such self-sufficiency is dependent on: (i) the strict optimization of the total energy consumption of the plant, and (ii) an increase in the specific biogas production from sewage sludge to values around 600 L per kg of supplied volatile solids.

Abstract:The valorisation of sewage sludge for sustainable agricultural use and biofuel production proposes an effective and beneficial management of sewage sludge in a closed-loop cycle. The management of sewage sludge biowaste is a rising problem due to increasing waste storage expenses. In this sense, the use of circular economy principles in sewage sludge management creates opportunities to develop new technologies for processing. The biorefinery model allows the application of wasteless technologies via sewage sludge valorisation in terms of agricultural use and biofuel production, especially with the hydrothermal carbonisation method. Applying hydrothermal carbonisation in the treatment of biosolid sewage sludge has numerous benefits due to processing highly hydrated organic waste into carbon hydro char, a high-quality solid biofuel. The direct use of sewage sludge in the soil does not allow for full use of its functional properties. However, the hydrothermal carbonisation of sewage sludge results in biocarbon pellets, making it a viable approach. This work also discusses the barriers (legal, chemical, biological, and technical) and possibilities related to sewage sludge biorefining processes.

Abstract:The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the most important and critical problems of wastewater treatment plants. 8.7 million tonnes of dry matter of sewage sludge were produced annually in the European Union in the year 2020. Due to the fact that sewage sludge contains a large number of substances that are not beneficial for human health, the conditions for sludge management will be significantly tightened in the EU countries. One option for sludge liquidation is the production of biofuel in a form of granules or pellets from sewage sludge enriched by waste celluloses. The achieved results show that the resulting quality of such alternative biofuel is fully comparable to conventional fossil fuels. The economic analysis is based on the simulation of cash flows associated with the implementation of the project over the lifetime and the calculation of levelised cost (LCOE). Results shows (under the current economic situation) that solar dryer technology ensures the lowest LCOE at the level of 26 EUR/GJ in fuel. If the LCOE of the alternative biofuel includes the price of the saved emission allowance and the future costs of sewage sludge disposal, the resulting price is directly competitive with lignite. The results thus clearly show that there is an ecological and economically competitive substitute for solid fossil fuels, which may be an important step for the future use of local combustion sources such as district heating plants.

A Novel Sustainable and Self-Sufficient Biotechnological Strategy for Directly Transforming Sewage Sludge into High-Value Liquid Biochemicals

Abstract:Sewage sludge, as a carbon-rich byproduct of wastewater treatment, holds significant untapped potential as a renewable resource. Upcycling this troublesome waste stream represents great promise in addressing global escalating energy demands through its wide practice of biochemical recovery concurrently. Here, we propose a biotechnological concept to gain value-added liquid bioproducts from sewage sludge in a self-sufficient manner by directly transforming sludge into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Our findings suggest that yeast, a cheap and readily available commercial powder, would involve ethanol-type fermentation in chain elongation to achieve abundant MCFA production from sewage sludge using electron donors (i.e., ethanol) and acceptors (i.e., short-chain fatty acids) produced in situ. The enhanced abundance and transcriptional activity of genes related to key enzymes, such as butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase, affirm the robust capacity for the self-sustained production of MCFAs. This is indicative of an effective metabolic network established between yeast and anaerobic microorganisms within this innovative sludge fermentation framework. Furthermore, life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis evidence the sustainability and economic competitiveness of this biotechnological strategy. Overall, this work provides insights into sewage sludge upgrading independent of additional carbon input, which can be applied in existing anaerobic sludge fermentation infrastructure as well as to develop new applications in a diverse range of industries.
Sewage sludge treatment: evaluation of the energy potential and methane emissions with COD balancing

Abstract:Sewage sludge is an important resource for the generation of electricity and heat within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Taking a holistic approach to such use involves considering the greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, for anaerobic sludge treatment, methane emissions are a matter of concern. Therefore, the utilization of a carbon balance, based on the chemical oxygen demand (COD), will be a focus for evaluating the magnitude of methane losses within the sludge treatment. In addition to biogas production and use in combined heat and power plants (CHPs), dissolved methane in digested sludge, as well as the methane slip, have to be considered. Measurements of dissolved methane concentrations in sewage sludge from digesters of various WWTPs show a concentration of about 17–37 mg CH4/L. The COD balance indicates a ratio of the methane emissions (methane slip, dissolved methane and residual gas) of < 4% of the total methane production during digestion. Considering the electricity generation by CHPs and the higher global warming potential of methane, compared to carbon dioxide, emissions of approximately 300 g CO2-equ./kWhel result, which is in a similar range to greenhouse gas emissions caused by electricity generation by fossil fuels.

Abstract:This study compared the performance of supercritical water gasification (SCWG) to conventional anaerobic digestion (AD) for treating sewage sludge from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Based on plant data from a WWTP in Norway, kinetic-based process models have been developed in Aspen Plus® to investigate the energy and economic feasibility of AD and SCWG for sewage sludge (SS) treatment. The findings showed that low ambient temperatures significantly reduced the energy efficiency of the AD, while their effect on the SCWG process was negligible. At the average ambient temperature of 7 °C and SS concentration of 7 wt%, AD and SCWG achieved thermal energy self-sufficiency (TES) of 0.76 and 0.63, respectively. Under these conditions, the AD and SCWG had energy conversion efficiencies (η) of 25.8% and 46.6%, respectively. However, increasing the SS content in the SCWG to 15 wt% improved the TES to 1.22 and η to 73.2%, making it a more attractive alternative to the AD. At 7 wt% SS concentration, the AD and SCWG processes required an investment cost of 6.83 million, respectively. Under the study assumptions, neither AD nor SCWG proved profitable, revealing negative net present values (NPV) and operating costs of 0.92 million, respectively.

Abstract:This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of energy and phosphorus (P) fertilizer (PF) recovery from municipal sewage sludge (MSS) through incineration in new combustion plants. We evaluated the economic impact of five critical process design choices: (1) boiler type, (2) fuel (MSS mono-combustion/co-combustion with wheat straw), (3) production scale (10/100 MW), (4) products (heat, electricity, PF), and (5) ash destination. Aspen Plus modeling provided mass and energy balances of each technology scenario. The economic feasibility was evaluated by calculating the minimum selling price of the products, as well as the MSS gate fees required to reach profitability. The dependency on key boundary conditions (operating time, market prices, policy support) was also evaluated. The results showed a significant dependency on both energy and fertilizer market prices and on financial support in the form of an MSS gate fee. Heat was preferred over combined heat and power (CHP), which was feasible only on the largest scale (100 MW) at maximum annual operating time (8000 h/y). Co-combustion showed lower heat recovery cost (19–30 €/MWh) than mono-combustion (29–66 €/MWh) due to 25–35% lower energy demand and 17–25% higher fuel heating value. Co-combustion also showed promising performance for P recovery, as PF could be recovered without ash post-treatment and sold at a competitive price, and co-combustion could be applicable also in smaller cities. When implementing ash post-treatment, the final cost of ash-based PF was more than four times the price of commercial PF. In conclusion, investment in a new combustion plant for MSS treatment appears conditional to gate fees unless the boundary conditions would change significantly.

Abstract:Energy Exploration &Exploitation, Ahead of Print. In recent years, in response to an increased demand for renewable energy sources, there has been a rise in the rate of energy recovery from municipal solid trash. This study analyses the feasibility of employing a variety of energy recovery methods to produce clean power from municipal solid waste (MSW). The conversion of MSW into a variety of useable sources of energy, such as fuel, heat and electricity, is required for the process of energy recovery. Other strategies for the recuperation of lost energy include gasification, incineration, anaerobic digestion, and the recovery of landfill gas. This article provides a high-level assessment of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each technology that is currently being utilised in India. According to the findings of the study, recovering energy from municipal solid waste is a sustainable and cost-effective option that can fulfil the growing demand for power while simultaneously lowering emissions of greenhouse gases and the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills.

Abstract:Treating municipal wastewater is a complex and costly process. With rising energy costs and sustainability targets, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are looking for alternatives to reduce operating costs and carbon dependence. Anaerobic digestion is the most common and established technology used in WWTPs to treat sludge since it can potentially improve energy recovery and reduce sewage treatment costs, mainly due to the generation of biogas. Biogas is a renewable energy resource and can be used in several applications, including heating and producing electricity. By exploring the biogas potential, WWTPs can reduce their operating costs and energy demands. The objective of this paper is to conduct a scoping literature review in order to provide the key concepts underpinning alternatives to improve biogas production and utilisation in WWTPs. In addition, this study aims to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art that may serve as a quick reference for the research community, WWTP operators, and engineers, including definitions and a general overview of the current state of biogas technologies around the world. Methods to increase biogas production, including co-digestion, pre-treatment, and biological hydrogen methanation, are reviewed, and the alternatives to using biogas are also summarised. This review has identified that co-digestion was the most efficient technique to improve biogas production and methane yield, while pre-treatment of sludge improved sludge biodegradability and reduced sludge treatment costs but also enhanced biogas production. Although many studies have explored different methods to improve biogas production in WWTPs, there is still a need for further investigation, especially regarding the techno-economic feasibility of these methods in full-scale facilities. The current challenges are mainly related to the need for extra investment and increased operating costs to integrate the new techniques into the current system. There is a great interest in alternatives to improve energy efficiency and self-sufficiency in WWTPs. This work provides an important review of the increasing number of recently published research papers that focus on improving biogas generation from sewage sludge in WWTPs.
