Abstract:Introduction: A decade ago, the first national valuation study of the EQ-5D-Y-3L (Y-3L) involved a discrete choice experiment (DCE) that asked 4155 US adult respondents to complete 40 paired comparisons, choosing between two dying children. Instead of choosing between dying children, the respondents in this novel protocol are asked whether 'being in a coma' is better or worse than experiencing 'health problems' (ie, experience scale) and how they would relieve health problems (ie, kaizen tasks). Our aims are to compare the preference evidence of the paired comparison and kaizen tasks and to conduct a DCE for the valuation of Y-3L profiles on an experience scale. Methods and analysis: Under this protocol, we will conduct an online survey that collects preference evidence from 600 US adult respondents on the health of a 10-year-old child for a week. Across all scenarios, each child will be described as either being 'in a coma' or having 'health problems', namely five three-level attributes (Y-3L). In this DCE, each respondent will be randomly assigned to one of four D-efficient blocks, including five coma comparisons (ie, Y-3L vs coma), 10 paired comparisons (Y-3L vs Y-3L) and 10 kaizen tasks (preference paths). In addition to comparing evidence by task (aim 2), the analysis plan includes the estimation of main-effects conditional logit models to create a Y-3L value set on an 'experience scale' where positive (negative) experiences have positive (negative) values (0 is 'being in a coma' and 1 is full health). Ethics and dissemination: The institutional review board (IRB) (Advarra) determined that this project (Pro00072276) is exempt from IRB oversight based on DHHS 45 CFR 46.104(d)(2) and is not subject to requirements for continuing review. The results will be prepared for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presented at scientific meetings. The data and code will be made available on reasonable request.
Complications of intravenous therapy: reduction by buffering of intravenous fluid preparation.

Abstract:Local complicationn of intravenous infusions have become a common cause of morbidity in hospitals. Two consecutive groups of patients were studied: the patients in the first group had received standard non-buffered intravenous fluid preparations with pH from 3.6 to 6.0; the second group of patients received fluids which were buffered to a neutral pH. The incidence of local complications in the first group was high (58%), with phlebitis being the most common complication which occurred in 43% of patients. The addition of a buffer to the fluids just before the infusion reduced the incidence of all complications in the second group of patients to 28%, and that of phlebitis to 19%. It will be shown that the complications can be significantly reduced by buffering the infusion fluids.

Assessing Interventions on Crowdsourcing Platforms to Nudge Patients for Engagement Behaviors in Primary Care Settings: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Engaging patients in health behaviors is critical for better outcomes, yet many patient partnership behaviors are not widely adopted. Behavioral economics-based interventions offer potential solutions, but it is challenging to assess the time and cost needed for different options. Crowdsourcing platforms can efficiently and rapidly assess the efficacy of such interventions, but it is unclear if web-based participants respond to simulated incentives in the same way as they would to actual incentives. Objective: The goals of this study were (1) to assess the feasibility of using crowdsourced surveys to evaluate behavioral economics interventions for patient partnerships by examining whether web-based participants responded to simulated incentives in the same way they would have responded to actual incentives, and (2) to assess the impact of 2 behavioral economics-based intervention designs, psychological rewards and loss of framing, on simulated medication reconciliation behaviors in a simulated primary care setting. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial using a between-subject design on a crowdsourcing platform (Amazon Mechanical Turk) to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral interventions designed to improve medication adherence in primary care visits. The study included a control group that represented the participants' baseline behavior and 3 simulated interventions, namely monetary compensation, a status effect as a psychological reward, and a loss frame as a modification of the status effect. Participants' willingness to bring medicines to a primary care visit was measured on a 5-point Likert scale. A reverse-coding question was included to ensure response intentionality. Results: A total of 569 study participants were recruited. There were 132 in the baseline group, 187 in the monetary compensation group, 149 in the psychological reward group, and 101 in the loss frame group. All 3 nudge interventions increased participants' willingness to bring medicines significantly when compared to the baseline scenario. The monetary compensation intervention caused an increase of 17.51% (P<.001), psychological rewards on status increased willingness by 11.85% (P<.001), and a loss frame on psychological rewards increased willingness by 24.35% (P<.001). Responses to the reverse-coding question were consistent with the willingness questions. Conclusions: In primary care, bringing medications to office visits is a frequently advocated patient partnership behavior that is nonetheless not widely adopted. Crowdsourcing platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk support efforts to efficiently and rapidly reach large groups of individuals to assess the efficacy of behavioral interventions. We found that crowdsourced survey-based experiments with simulated incentives can produce valid simulated behavioral responses. The use of psychological status design, particularly with a loss framing approach, can effectively enhance patient engagement in primary care. These results support the use of crowdsourcing platforms to augment and complement traditional approaches to learning about behavioral economics for patient engagement.

Abstract:Preference elicitation leverages AI or optimization to learn stakeholder preferences in settings ranging from marketing to public policy. The online robust preference elicitation procedure of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.01899" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.01899">arXiv:2003.01899</a> has been shown in simulation to outperform various other elicitation procedures in terms of effectively learning individuals' true utilities. However, as with any simulation, the method makes a series of assumptions that cannot easily be verified to hold true beyond simulation. Thus, we propose to validate the robust method's performance using real users, focusing on the particular challenge of selecting policies for prioritizing COVID-19 patients for scarce hospital resources during the pandemic. To this end, we develop an online platform for preference elicitation where users report their preferences between alternatives over a moderate number of pairwise comparisons chosen by a particular elicitation procedure. We recruit 193 Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers to report their preferences and demonstrate that the robust method outperforms asking random queries by 21%, the next best performing method in the simulated results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.01899" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.01899">arXiv:2003.01899</a>, in terms of recommending policies with a higher utility.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: The Role of Survey Training Materials in Stated-Preference Studies

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Online survey-based methods are increasingly used to elicit preferences for healthcare. This digitization creates an opportunity for interactive survey elements, potentially improving respondents' understanding and/or engagement.</p><h3 class="Heading">Objective</h3><p class="Para">Our objective was to understand whether, and how, training materials in a survey influenced stated preferences.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">An online discrete-choice experiment (DCE) was designed to elicit public preferences for a new targeted approach to prescribing biologics ("biologic calculator") for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with conventional prescribing. The DCE presented three alternatives, two biologic calculators and a conventional approach (opt out), described by five attributes: delay to treatment, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, infection risk, and cost saving to the national health service. Respondents were randomized to receive training materials as plain text or an animated storyline. Training materials contained information about RA and approaches to treatment and described the biologic calculator. Background questions included sociodemographics and self-reported measures of task difficulty and attribute non-attendance. DCE data were analyzed using conditional and heteroskedastic conditional logit (HCL) models.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">In total, 300 respondents completed the DCE, receiving either plain text (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">n</em> = 158) or the animated storyline (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">n</em> = 142). The HCL showed the estimated coefficients for all attributes aligned with a priori expectations and were statistically significant. The scale term was statistically significant, indicating that respondents who received plain-text materials had more random choices. Further tests suggested preference homogeneity after accounting for differences in scale.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">Using animated training materials did not change the preferences of respondents, but they appeared to improve choice consistency, potentially allowing researchers to include more complex designs with increased numbers of attributes, levels, alternatives or choice sets.</p>

Abstract:Apolipoprotein CII (ApoCII) deficiency is a relatively rare cause of the chylomicronemia syndrome, a disorder characterized by severe fasting hypertriglyceridemia and massive accumulation of chylomicrons in plasma. Here we present a case which is the first example of apoCII deficiency caused by a major rearrangement in the APOCII gene. Southern blot analysis revealed an approximately 7.5-kb deletion disrupting the APOCII gene including the promotor region and first exon. Interestingly, the deletion also encompasses the APOCIV gene, a recently discovered novel gene upstream of APOCII. This deletion is the first mutation to be reported in the APOCIV gene.

Abstract:This article investigates the effectiveness of lottery incentive schemes for eliciting consumer valuations in large‐scale online experiments. We implement a fully incentivized condition within a geographically dispersed sample of consumers in which bids for a Criollo steak elicited by a Becker‐DeGroot‐Marschak mechanism are realized with certainty and the products are priority shipped in dry‐ice coolers. The fully incentivized condition is compared to between‐subject random incentivized schemes, in which only a fraction of subjects realize their choices. We tested two treatments with a 10% probability framed as a percentage or an absolute number of subjects, one treatment with a 1% probability, and a purely hypothetical reference condition. The results reveal that between‐subject random incentivized schemes with 10% and 1% payment probabilities are effective in eliciting valuations that are statistically indistinguishable from the fully incentivized scheme. In addition to finding insignificant statistical differences between 10% and 1% and the fully incentivized scheme, all incentivized conditions mitigate hypothetical bias, resulting in lower product valuations than the purely hypothetical condition. We contribute a novel methodological framework for conducting large‐scale experiments with geographically diverse and representative subjects, increasing the external validity and producing reliable valuations while significantly reducing financial and logistic constraints.

Abstract:Background: Ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) and digital wearables (DW) are commonly used remote monitoring technologies that capture real-time data in people's natural environments. Real-time data are core to personalized medical care and intensively adaptive health interventions. The utility of such personalized care is contingent on user uptake and continued use of EMA and DW. Consequently, it is critical to understand user preferences that may increase the uptake of EMA and DW. Objective: The study aims to quantify users' preferences of EMA and DW, examine variations in users' preferences across demographic and behavioral subgroups, and assess the association between users' preferences and intentions to use EMA and DW. Methods: We will administer 2 discrete choice experiments (DCEs) paired with self-report surveys on the internet to a total of 3260 US adults through Qualtrics. The first DCE will assess participants' EMA preferences using a choice-based conjoint design that will ask participants to compare the relative importance of prompt frequency, number of questions per prompt, prompt type, health topic, and assessment duration. The second DCE will measure participants' DW preferences using a maximum difference scaling design that will quantify the relative importance of device characteristics, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating technical, health care, and market factors. Hierarchical Bayesian multinomial logistic regression models will be used to generate subject-specific preference utilities. Preference utilities will be compared across demographic (ie, sex, age, race, and ethnicity) and behavioral (ie, substance use, physical activity, dietary behavior, and sleep duration) subgroups. Regression models will determine whether specific utilities are associated with attitudes toward or intentions to use EMA and DW. Mixture models will determine the associations of attitudes toward and intentions to use EMA and DW with latent profiles of user preferences. Results: The institutional review board approved the study on December 19, 2022. Data collection started on January 20, 2023, and concluded on May 4, 2023. Data analysis is currently underway. Conclusions: The study will provide evidence on users' preferences of EMA and DW features that can improve initial uptake and potentially continued use of these remote monitoring tools. The sample size and composition allow for subgroup analysis by demographics and health behaviors and will provide evidence on associations between users' preferences and intentions to uptake EMA and DW. Limitations include the cross-sectional nature of the study, which limits our ability to measure direct behavior. Rather, we capture behavioral intentions for EMA and DW uptake. The nonprobability sample limits the generalizability of the results and introduces self-selection bias related to the demographic and behavioral characteristics of participants who belong to web-based survey panels.
The Online Laboratory: Conducting Experiments in a Real Labor Market

Abstract:Online labor markets have great potential as platforms for conducting experiments, as they provide immediate access to a large and diverse subject pool and allow researchers to conduct randomized controlled trials. We argue that online experiments can be just as valid---both internally and externally---as laboratory and field experiments, while requiring far less money and time to design and to conduct. In this paper, we first describe the benefits of conducting experiments in online labor markets; we then use one such market to replicate three classic experiments and confirm their results. We confirm that subjects (1) reverse decisions in response to how a decision-problem is framed, (2) have pro-social preferences (value payoffs to others positively), and (3) respond to priming by altering their choices. We also conduct a labor supply field experiment in which we confirm that workers have upward sloping labor supply curves. In addition to reporting these results, we discuss the unique threats to validity in an online setting and propose methods for coping with these threats. We also discuss the external validity of results from online domains and explain why online results can have external validity equal to or even better than that of traditional methods, depending on the research question. We conclude with our views on the potential role that online experiments can play within the social sciences, and then recommend software development priorities and best practices.

Abstract:Questionnaire design choices, such as handling 'do not know' answers or using check all that apply questions may impact the level of item- and unit nonresponse. We used experimental data from an online panel and the questions of ESS to examine how applying forced answering, offering DK/NA options and specific question formats (CATA vs. forced choice format) impact the level of nonresponse and how respondent characteristics correlate with these effects. The results suggest that neither forcing respondents nor offering an explicit NR option is advisable, as these options strongly increase nonresponse. Rather a skipping-allowed design is a more reasonable choice. Those who were interested in the topic of the survey were far less sensitive to NR handling. Developing adaptive questionnaire designs based on topic interest can be a promising direction for future research.

Combining Observational and Experimental Data to Improve Efficiency Using Imperfect Instruments

Abstract:Randomized controlled trials generate experimental variation that can credibly identify causal effects, but often suffer from limited scale, while observational datasets are large, but often violate desired identification assumptions. To improve estimation efficiency, I propose a method that leverages imperfect instruments - pretreatment covariates that satisfy the relevance condition but may violate the exclusion restriction. I show that these imperfect instruments can be used to derive moment restrictions that, in combination with the experimental data, improve estimation efficiency. I outline estimators for implementing this strategy, and show that my methods can reduce variance by up to 50%; therefore, only half of the experimental sample is required to attain the same statistical precision. I apply my method to a search listing dataset from Expedia that studies the causal effect of search rankings on clicks, and show that the method can substantially improve the precision.

Abstract:A cDNA clone (pAE20-4) corresponding to the 1.3-kilobase human beta 2 interferon mRNA was used as a probe in blot-hybridization experiments of DNA from a panel of human-rodent somatic cell hybrids containing overlapping subsets of human chromosomes. The DNA hybridization experiments showed that the human beta 2 interferon gene is located on human chromosome 7. This assignment is consistent with previous experimental data in which the expression of the translationally active 1.3-kilobase beta 2 interferon mRNA was assayed in various somatic cell hybrids. Blot-hybridization experiments using DNA from different human cell strains and cell lines reveal distinct EcoRI restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the human beta 2 interferon gene.

Abstract:Objectives Pragmatic randomised controlled trials (pRCTs) are essential for determining the real-world safety and effectiveness of healthcare interventions. However, both laypeople and clinicians often demonstrate experiment aversion: preferring to implement either of two interventions for everyone rather than comparing them to determine which is best. We studied whether clinician and layperson views of pRCTs for COVID-19, as well as non-COVID-19, interventions became more positive during the pandemic, which increased both the urgency and public discussion of pRCTs. Design Randomised survey experiments. Setting Geisinger, a network of hospitals and clinics in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, USA; Amazon Mechanical Turk, a research participant platform used to recruit online participants residing across the USA. Data were collected between August 2020 and February 2021. Participants 2149 clinicians (the types of people who conduct or make decisions about conducting pRCTs) and 2909 laypeople (the types of people who are included in pRCTs as patients). The clinician sample was primarily female (81%), comprised doctors (15%), physician assistants (9%), registered nurses (54%) and other medical professionals, including other nurses, genetic counsellors and medical students (23%), and the majority of clinicians (62%) had more than 10 years of experience. The layperson sample ranges in age from 18 to 88 years old (mean=38, SD=13) and the majority were white (75%) and female (56%). Outcome measures Participants read vignettes in which a hypothetical decision-maker who sought to improve health could choose to implement intervention A for all, implement intervention B for all, or experimentally compare A and B and implement the superior intervention. Participants rated and ranked the appropriateness of each decision. Experiment aversion was defined as the degree to which a participant rated the experiment below their lowest-rated intervention. Results In a survey of laypeople administered during the pandemic, we found significant aversion to experiments involving catheterisation checklists and hypertension drugs unrelated to the treatment of COVID-19 (Cohen's d =0.25–0.46, p <0.001). Similarly, among both laypeople and clinicians, we found significant aversion to most (comparing different checklist, proning and mask protocols; Cohen's d =0.17–0.56, p <0.001) but not all (comparing school reopening protocols; Cohen's d =0.03, p =0.64) non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 experiments. Interestingly, we found the lowest experiment aversion to pharmaceutical COVID-19 experiments (comparing new drugs and new vaccine protocols for treating the novel coronavirus; Cohen's d =0.04–0.12, p =0.12-0.55). Across all vignettes and samples, 28%–57% of participants expressed experiment aversion, whereas only 6%–35% expressed experiment appreciation by rating the trial higher than their highest-rated intervention. Conclusions Advancing evidence-based medicine through pRCTs will require anticipating and addressing experiment aversion among patients and healthcare professionals. Abstract:The inhibitory capacities of six different disintegrins and one related neurotoxin analogue for the binding of RGD-dependent integrins to either fibrinogen, vitronectin or fibronectin were compared in solid phase assays. Echistatin and flavoridin were the most active inhibitors for alpha V beta 3 and alpha 5 beta 1 integrins and moderately exceeded the activity of the natural protein ligands. The same disintegrins together with eristostatin, bitistatin and barbourin were also very potent inhibitors of fibrinogen binding to alpha IIb beta 3 integrin. For all three integrins, albolabrin showed the lowest affinity, but it still clearly exceeded that of synthetic GRGDS. However, assay conditions may determine these relative affinities, as shown for the alpha IIb beta 3 and alpha V beta 3 integrins when used either in immobilized or soluble form. For alpha IIb beta 3, however, a close correlation was found between KD values determined in platelet binding assays and the concentrations required for half maximal inhibition of three disintegrins. The inhibiting capacity of disintegrins in assays with purified integrins also correlated reasonably well with their inhibition of cell attachment to RGD-dependent protein substrates. However, sequence differences in the RGD loops of the various disintegrins may not fully account for the 20-100-fold difference in their binding capacities. This was particularly evident for echistatin and albolabrin, which differ in this region only by two conservative substitutions but have considerably different inhibitory activities. More remote regions of the disintegrins and alignment of disulfide bridges are therefore likely to contribute to their affinity and selectivity.
Australian Public Preferences for the Funding of New Health Technologies: A Comparison of Discrete Choice and Profile Case Best-Worst Scaling Methods

Abstract:Background: Ethical, economic, political, and legitimacy arguments support the consideration of public preferences in health technology decision making. The objective was to assess public preferences for funding new health technologies and to compare a profile case best-worst scaling (BWS) and traditional discrete choice experiment (DCE) method. Methods: An online survey consisting of a DCE and BWS task was completed by 930 adults recruited via an Internet panel. Respondents traded between 7 technology attributes. Participation quotas broadly reflected the population of Queensland, Australia, by gender and age. Choice data were analyzed using a generalized multinomial logit model. Results: The findings from both the BWS and DCE were generally consistent in that respondents exhibited stronger preferences for technologies offering prevention or early diagnosis over other benefit types. Respondents also prioritized technologies that benefit younger people, larger numbers of people, those in rural areas, or indigenous Australians; that provide value for money; that have no available alternative; or that upgrade an existing technology. However, the relative preference weights and consequent preference orderings differed between the DCE and BWS models. Further, poor correlation between the DCE and BWS weights was observed. While only a minority of respondents reported difficulty completing either task (22.2% DCE, 31.9% BWS), the majority (72.6%) preferred the DCE over BWS task. Conclusions: This study provides reassurance that many criteria routinely used for technology decision making are considered to be relevant by the public. The findings clearly indicate the perceived importance of prevention and early diagnosis. The dissimilarity observed between DCE and profile case BWS weights is contrary to the findings of previous comparisons and raises uncertainty regarding the comparative merits of these stated preference methods in a priority-setting context.
Patient and Public Acceptance of Digital Technologies in Health Care: Protocol for a Discrete Choice Experiment

Abstract:Background Strokes pose a particular challenge to the health care system. Although stroke-related mortality has declined in recent decades, the absolute number of new strokes (incidence), stroke deaths, and survivors of stroke has increased. With the increasing need of neurorehabilitation and the decreasing number of professionals, innovations are needed to ensure adequate care. Digital technologies are increasingly used to meet patients’ unfilled needs during their patient journey. Patients must adhere to unfamiliar digital technologies to engage in health interventions. Therefore, the acceptance of the benefits and burdens of digital technologies in health interventions is a key factor in implementing these innovations. Objective This study aims to describe the development of a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to weigh criteria that impact patient and public acceptance. Secondary study objectives are a benefit-burden assessment (estimation of the maximum acceptable burden of technical features and therapy-related characteristics for the patient or individual, eg, no human contact), overall comparison (assessment of the relative importance of attributes for comparing digital technologies), and adherence (identification of key attributes that influence patient adherence). The exploratory objectives include heterogeneity assessment and subgroup analysis. The methodological aims are to investigate the use of DCE. Methods To obtain information on the criteria impacting acceptance, a DCE will be conducted including 7 attributes based on formative qualitative research. Patients with stroke (experimental group) and the general population (control group) are surveyed. The final instrument includes 6 best-best choice tasks in partial design. The experimental design is a fractional-factorial efficient Bayesian design (D-error). A conditional logit regression model and mixed logistic regression models will be used for analysis. To consider the heterogeneity of subgroups, a latent class analysis and an analysis of heteroscedasticity will be performed. Results The literature review, qualitative preliminary study, survey development, and pretesting were completed. Data collection and analysis will be completed in the last quarter of 2023. Conclusions Our results will inform decision makers about patients’ and publics’ acceptance of digital technologies used in innovative interventions. The patient preference information will improve decisions regarding the development, adoption, and pricing of innovative interventions. The behavioral changes in the choice of digital intervention alternatives are observable and can therefore be statistically analyzed. They can be translated into preferences, which define the value. This study will investigate the influences on the acceptance of digital interventions and thus support decisions and future research. Adapting Behavioral Interventions for a Changing Public Health Context: A Worked Example of Implementing a Digital Intervention During a Global Pandemic Using Rapid Optimisation Methods

Abstract:Background: A rigorous approach is needed to inform rapid adaptation and optimisation of behavioral interventions in evolving public health contexts, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. This helps ensure that interventions are relevant, persuasive, and feasible while remaining evidence-based. This paper provides a set of iterative methods to rapidly adapt and optimize an intervention during implementation. These methods are demonstrated through the example of optimizing an effective online handwashing intervention called Germ Defense. Methods: Three revised versions of the intervention were rapidly optimized and launched within short timeframes of 1–2 months. Optimisations were informed by: regular stakeholder engagement; emerging scientific evidence, and changing government guidance; rapid qualitative research (telephone think-aloud interviews and open-text surveys), and analyses of usage data. All feedback was rapidly collated, using the Table of Changes method from the Person-Based Approach to prioritize potential optimisations in terms of their likely impact on behavior change. Written feedback from stakeholders on each new iteration of the intervention also informed specific optimisations of the content. Results: Working closely with clinical stakeholders ensured that the intervention was clinically accurate, for example, confirming that information about transmission and exposure was consistent with evidence. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) contributors identified important clarifications to intervention content, such as whether Covid-19 can be transmitted via air as well as surfaces, and ensured that information about difficult behaviors (such as self-isolation) was supportive and feasible. Iterative updates were made in line with emerging evidence, including changes to the information about face-coverings and opening windows. Qualitative research provided insights into barriers to engaging with the intervention and target behaviors, with open-text surveys providing a useful supplement to detailed think-aloud interviews. Usage data helped identify common points of disengagement, which guided decisions about optimisations. The Table of Changes was modified to facilitate rapid collation and prioritization of multiple sources of feedback to inform optimisations. Engagement with PPI informed the optimisation process. Conclusions: Rapid optimisation methods of this kind may in future be used to help improve the speed and efficiency of adaptation, optimization, and implementation of interventions, in line with calls for more rapid, pragmatic health research methods.

Methodology

Abstract:Online controlled experiments are the primary tool for measuring the causal impact of product changes in digital businesses. It is increasingly common for digital products and services to interact with customers in a personalised way. Using online controlled experiments to optimise personalised interaction strategies is challenging because the usual assumption of statistically equivalent user groups is violated. Additionally, challenges are introduced by users qualifying for strategies based on dynamic, stochastic attributes. Traditional A/B tests can salvage statistical equivalence by pre-allocating users to control and exposed groups, but this dilutes the experimental metrics and reduces the test power. We present a stacked incrementality test framework that addresses problems with running online experiments for personalised user strategies. We derive bounds that show that our framework is superior to the best simple A/B test given enough users and that this condition is easily met for large scale online experiments. In addition, we provide a test power calculator and describe a selection of pitfalls and lessons learnt from our experience using it.
